Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Understanding the Masks, False Fronts and Deceptive Appearances We Present to the World and to Ourselves
Transcript
- 0:00It is relatively easy to recognize that we are putting up
- 0:04a false front in our dealings with society.
- 0:08We greet people with a smile while in our minds we may be
- 0:12having an opposite feeling about the person.
- 0:15We flatter people to get ahead in society knowing that the
- 0:19flattery is not based on reality but is meant to gain a certain
- 0:23position or end result. Similarly, we mask our own
- 0:28feelings, intentions and thoughts in order to appear more
- 0:32successful, more important and more powerful than we really
- 0:37are. Many people put on the
- 0:39appearance of wealth with luxury cars and clothes or homes when
- 0:44they are masking what may be dire financial straits with
- 0:48heavy loads of debt. We may want to appear more
- 0:52learned and wiser than we really are, or we may want to put on an
- 0:56outward show of appearances while inwardly we are struggling
- 1:01or suffering. This is the way of the world we
- 1:04live in for the most part, and the vast majority of people
- 1:08simply accept this as the way things are and the way things
- 1:12need to be. They do not question, and indeed
- 1:16in many cases they do not even recognize that this is taking
- 1:20place. We come then to the position of
- 1:23the spiritual seeker, aspiring for truth and yet faced with an
- 1:28external nature that continually expresses various degrees of
- 1:32falsehood in our social settings.
- 1:36These things happen so automatically and are so
- 1:39embedded in our socialization, upbringing and in the
- 1:43expectations of the society that we do not even generally
- 1:48recognize the situation. The issue is further complicated
- 1:53by the emphasis we place on mental knowledge in today's
- 1:56world. We think something, and we thus
- 1:59believe that we have become that.
- 2:02We accept certain spiritual principles in our minds, and we
- 2:06thus count ourselves as having realized the truths of that
- 2:10teaching. We do not generally recognize
- 2:13that there are different parts of our being which each have
- 2:17their own drive for fulfilment and expression, and which are
- 2:21not all organized around a single principle.
- 2:25Thus, in our psychic being, we may feel devotional, but the
- 2:29mind may be guiding us to do things that actually contradict
- 2:33that devotion. Similarly, the vital nature may
- 2:37have its own desires, needs, wishes that it tries to fulfil
- 2:43and it is very good at getting its way by convincing the mind
- 2:47that it is doing the right thing and needful thing to actually
- 2:52carry out the mandate of the aspiring soul, when in fact it
- 2:57is carrying out its vital human desires.
- 3:01For the spiritual seeker. Then there is a need for careful
- 3:04scrutiny of the different parts of the being, the mind, the
- 3:08emotions, the vital nature and the physical body to see not
- 3:13what we deceive ourselves to believe about their adherence to
- 3:17the soul's aspiration, but what is actually taking place, what
- 3:22the actual thoughts, emotions, feelings, drives are carrying
- 3:28out in these other aspects of the being.
- 3:32To the extent there is lack of unity in the aspiration and its
- 3:36expression through all elements of the external nature, there is
- 3:41work to be done. How many actually can look
- 3:45through the masks and false fronts we present not just to
- 3:49the external world, but even to ourselves, when we believe we
- 3:53are totally sincere, dedicated and consecrated to the spiritual
- 3:58path? As long as we remain within the
- 4:02framework of the mental vital physical complex, we cannot see
- 4:06and identify its limitations and weaknesses clearly.
- 4:11Only when we can step away from that external being and observe
- 4:15it dispassionately can we begin to understand the depth and
- 4:20complexity of the effort needed. This is not a matter for
- 4:24despondency or depression, as it is simply a recognition of the
- 4:29basics of human nature that have been deeply embedded throughout
- 4:33human existence. Rather, we can recognize this as
- 4:38an opportunity to address and change some elements of human
- 4:42nature as we ascend the evolutionary scale of
- 4:46consciousness. At that point, we can call on
- 4:50the spiritual force and open ourselves up to its action so
- 4:55that it can transform us down to the very cells of the body.
- 5:01Shriora Bindo writes quote. Men are always mixed, and there
- 5:06are qualities and defects mingled together almost
- 5:09inextricably in their nature. What a man wants to be or wants
- 5:14others to see in him, or what he is sometime on one side of his
- 5:18nature or in some relations, can be very different from what he
- 5:23is in the actual fact, or in other relations, or on another
- 5:28side of his nature. To be absolutely sincere,
- 5:33straightforward, open, is not an easy achievement for human
- 5:38nature. It is only by spiritual endeavor
- 5:41that one can realize it, and to do it needs a severity of
- 5:45introspective self vision and unsparing scrutiny of self
- 5:50observation, of which many Sodaks and yogis even are not
- 5:54capable. And it is only by an illumining
- 5:57grace that reveals the Sodak to Himself and transform what is
- 6:02deficient in him that it can be done, and even then only if He
- 6:08Himself consents and lends Himself wholly to the divine
- 6:13working. End Quote.
