- 0:11of Star Trails. My name is Drew and I'll be your
- 0:14guide to the night sky for the week of January
- 0:17the 25th through the 31st. This week we take
- 0:21a break from science to ground ourselves in the
- 0:25reality of the night sky and how to stay motivated
- 0:28when the stars aren't cooperating. I'll talk
- 0:31about frustrations when dealing with the night
- 0:34sky and how to manage expectations when it comes
- 0:37to the myth of the perfect night sky. Later in
- 0:42the show we'll survey the celestial objects worth
- 0:44our attention this week and check in with the
- 0:47sun after several days of intense activity last
- 0:51week. Whether you're tuning in from the backyard
- 0:54or the balcony, I'm glad you're here. So grab

- 1:00get started. This week is the final episode in
- 1:10our January arc of shows aimed at brand -new
- 1:14astronomers. We've covered the basics of how
- 1:17to begin stargazing, we took a deep dive into
- 1:20one of the monster constellations of the winter,
- 1:23Orion, and just last week we covered how the
- 1:26sky moves, how planets wander, how stars rise
- 1:30and set, and how nothing above us is ever truly
- 1:34still. In this episode, we're going to dial back
- 1:38the astronomy and maybe get a little meta. This
- 1:41isn't about seeing particular objects or how
- 1:44to observe a nebula. It's not about how the sky
- 1:47behaves, but rather how we behave under it. Astronomy,
- 1:53especially the kind practiced by amateurs like
- 1:55us, has a quiet unspoken problem. And this problem
- 2:00is one that often causes frustration, and in
- 2:03some cases, keeps us indoors on nights when we
- 2:06could be observing. The idea I'm circling here
- 2:10is the myth of the perfect night. And the perfect
- 2:14night looks something like this. Clear skies
- 2:18from horizon to horizon. Steady air. Everything
- 2:22visible exactly when you want it to be. The telescope
- 2:26works flawlessly. Your charts make sense. And
- 2:29your patience holds. It's the night we imagine
- 2:33when we're stuck at work watching clouds roll
- 2:36by on a weather app. It's the night social media
- 2:40seems to promise is just one dark side away.
- 2:43And it's the night many of us quietly measure
- 2:46ourselves against. The problem is, almost no
- 2:51real night ever looks like that. And if we're
- 2:54not careful, that expectation can quietly drain
- 2:57the joy out of this whole thing. There's a kind
- 3:05of lie baked into how astronomy is often presented.
- 3:08It's not an intentional lie, but rather a lie
- 3:12by omission. Looking at images of space online,
- 3:17especially those taken by fellow amateurs, can
- 3:19be awe -inspiring. We see the results. We see
- 3:23the final images. We see the moments where everything
- 3:26worked. When a dozen hours of integration in
- 3:30a light -polluted sky somehow produced the most
- 3:33gorgeous image of Andromeda you've ever seen.
- 3:39What we don't see is the waiting, the clouds
- 3:42that showed up at dusk and never quite left,
- 3:45the bad seeing that turned Jupiter into a boiling
- 3:48mess, the targets that were technically up but
- 3:52practically unreachable. Nobody posts the night
- 3:56they spent mostly checking their telescope's
- 3:59collimation and wondering if the haze was getting
- 4:02worse. Nobody posts the hour they waited for
- 4:06the sky to settle, only to pack up tired and
- 4:08cold. Not because those nights are shameful,
- 4:12but because they don't photograph well, they
- 4:14don't make for good stories or social media fodder.
- 4:18And yet, those nights are the rule, not the exception.
- 4:22And let's be real, most observing sessions are
- 4:25compromised in some way. The atmosphere rarely
- 4:29cooperates. Light pollution always finds a way
- 4:33back in. Fatigue sets limits, and astronomy happens
- 4:37in the margin of imperfection. There's another
- 4:41trick at work here, and it's a very human one.
- 4:44Memory edits. Speaking from personal experience,
- 4:49I can recall nights at the dark site where it
- 4:51felt like the glowing gas of the Milky Way was
- 4:54just hundreds of feet above us, and so bright
- 4:58that it already looked like a long exposure.
- 5:01Or the time when you gazed at Jupiter or Saturn
- 5:04and it felt like you were on a spaceship on a
- 5:07close approach. I'm not making this up. These
- 5:10are my own memories, and while I know they're
- 5:13somewhat false, they are in my mind's eye, representing
- 5:17some of the best nights of observing I've ever
- 5:20experienced. Over time, our minds smooth the
- 5:25rough edges off past observing sessions. We remember
- 5:29that we saw Saturn, but not the frustration beforehand.
- 5:32We remember that meteor shower, but not the clouds
- 5:36that wiped out half the night. The past becomes
- 5:41cleaner than it ever really was, and then the
- 5:44present feels broken by comparison. A newcomer
- 5:48looks up, struggles, misses something, and thinks,
- 5:51I must be doing this wrong. An experienced observer
- 5:55has an off night and wonders what's changed,
- 5:57even when nothing has. This is what it's always
- 6:01been like, and here's the uncomfortable truth
- 6:04that no one really advertises. Astronomy does
- 6:08not reward effort on demand. You can do everything
- 6:12right and still come away with very little to
- 6:15show for it. And if your expectation is that
- 6:19effort guarantees payoff, astronomy will eventually
- 6:23feel cruel. I love star parties and I try to
- 6:30attend all the ones put on by my local club.
- 6:33I've had amazing nights with perfect seeing the
- 6:36darkest skies imaginable. So dark that it felt
- 6:39like I was walking around in a three -dimensional
- 6:41star field. But the last three times I've attended
- 6:46it's been fairly rotten in regards to seeing.
- 6:49Humidity in the air collects as dew on scopes
- 6:53and turns black skies into a gray washout. Low
- 6:57-lying clouds drift in and wreck the one -shot
- 7:00at seeing the hot comet everyone's been chasing.
- 7:03And yes, sometimes it just rains. Sometimes we
- 7:07arrive early, set up scopes, wait for hours,
- 7:10and then just tear them back down 30 minutes
- 7:12after dusk because the conditions aren't working.
- 7:16If any of this sounds like Sisyphus pushing a
- 7:19rock up a hill, you're not wrong. Some people
- 7:22eventually drift away from the hobby because
- 7:24of these frustrations. That's the myth of the
- 7:28perfect night, and it does more damage than clouds
- 7:31ever could. So if that night doesn't really exist,
- 7:40if most sessions are compromised, if frustration
- 7:43and waiting are built into the experience, then
- 7:46what are astronomers actually doing all night?
- 7:50If you're picturing non -stop discovery, object
- 7:53after object, revelation after revelation, I
- 7:56want to gently reset that image. Most of the
- 8:00night is spent waiting. Waiting for darkness
- 8:04to fully arrive, waiting for your optics to cool,
- 8:07waiting to see if the atmosphere settles down,
- 8:10and waiting to find out whether the forecast
- 8:12was lying to you. This isn't a failure state,
- 8:16it's just the default. And that can be disorienting,
- 8:20especially when you're new. It doesn't feel productive.
- 8:24Nothing dramatic is happening. The sky isn't
- 8:26putting on a show yet. And maybe it never will.
- 8:30More doubt sets in. When will I ever get to use
- 8:33that new telescope I spent thousands of dollars
- 8:35on? Or, and this applies to me, why can't I ever
- 8:39get a clear night to shoot some astrophotos worth
- 8:42posting? But this waiting is part of the work.
- 8:46It's how you learn the rhythm of a night, how
- 8:49you notice subtle changes. Remember, the sky
- 8:52is a living system and it has moods. Then there's
- 8:56adjusting, adjusting focus, adjusting balance,
- 8:59adjusting expectations. Something is always slightly
- 9:04off. The finder isn't quite aligned. The eyepiece
- 9:08that worked beautifully last week suddenly feels
- 9:11wrong. Your red light is too bright. Your red
- 9:15light is too dim. The gloves are too thick. The
- 9:18chair is never at the right height. And my knees
- 9:21are taking abuse from trying to dial in the right
- 9:24view on my camera. And by the way, why the hell
- 9:27can't I get these stars in tack sharp focus?
- 9:31Astronomy is an endless series of small corrections.
- 9:35Like anything else, it requires practice, preparation,
- 9:40and a deep insight into the workings of your
- 9:42gear. And there will always be problems. You're
- 9:47learning how to work with imperfect tools under
- 9:50imperfect conditions. You're learning how much
- 9:53precision is good enough. You're learning when
- 9:56to stop chasing perfection and start observing
- 9:59what's actually there. A lot of the night is
- 10:08also spent trying and failing and trying again.
- 10:12You hunt for something faint, you think you see
- 10:15it, then you lose it, then you wonder if it was
- 10:18ever there at all. This is how visual astronomy
- 10:22works. The line between seeing and not seeing
- 10:25is often thin and your brain is part of the instrument.
- 10:29Learning to trust it while also questioning it
- 10:32is a strange but quiet discipline. Maybe you
- 10:36saw a faint galaxy or nebula, maybe you didn't,
- 10:39and yet that still counts. A bad day doing astronomy
- 10:43has to be better than a good day at work, right?
- 10:47There's also repetition, which rarely gets talked
- 10:51about. You observe the same objects again and
- 10:54again, not because you forgot them, but because
- 10:57each visit teaches you something new. The sky
- 11:00changes, your experience changes, your eye changes.
- 11:04You'll develop favorites, just like I mentioned
- 11:07in a past episode how I always check in on my
- 11:10favorites, Orion, the Pleiades, and Andromeda.
- 11:15Progress in astronomy doesn't usually look like
- 11:18novelty. It looks like familiarity. It looks
- 11:21like knowing exactly where something should be,
- 11:24even if you never quite get the view you hoped
- 11:27for that night. And yes, sometimes there's boredom.
- 11:32Long stretches where nothing dramatic happens
- 11:35when you're cold or tired or distracted, and
- 11:38this is where a lot of people assume they're
- 11:40doing something wrong. Boredom is just curiosity
- 11:44without payoff yet. It's the cost of staying
- 11:47present when the universe isn't offering instant
- 11:51reward. Astronomers learn that attention itself
- 11:55is the practice. And this brings me back around
- 11:58to star parties. From the outside, they look
- 12:02ideal. Dark skies, great company, rows of telescopes
- 12:06pointed upward. But anyone who's actually been
- 12:09to a few knows the truth. There are logistics.
- 12:12There's exhaustion. There are nights when the
- 12:15sky doesn't cooperate at all. There are evenings
- 12:17when you spend more time talking than observing.
- 12:20And that's not a failure of the event. Some of
- 12:24my favorite nights at a star party had very little
- 12:27to do with space at all. Sometimes it's smoking
- 12:30cigars and drinking bourbon with more experienced
- 12:33observers and trying to absorb all the information
- 12:36you can from them. Sometimes it's picking up
- 12:39a guitar and strumming chords over a folk tune
- 12:42while the heady aroma of grilled meat wafts between
- 12:46the observatories. That's the reality of bringing
- 12:50humans, equipment, and weather together in one
- 12:53place and hoping for the best. Some of the most
- 13:01meaningful nights aren't the ones where you saw
- 13:03the most. They're the ones where you learned
- 13:05something, shared a frustration, or simply stayed
- 13:09out longer than you thought you would. Most astronomers
- 13:12aren't chasing spectacle all night. They're building
- 13:16a relationship with the sky in their own personal
- 13:19way. For me, that means grabbing my camera and
- 13:23tripod and wading into waist -deep foliage in
- 13:26a farm field to shoot the Milky Way while quietly
- 13:29meditating on my place in the universe. For others,
- 13:33that's setting up a smart scope, sharing binoculars
- 13:36with a neighbor, or trading whiskey recommendations
- 13:40amid talk of T. Coroni Borealis. This is the
- 13:44reality of our hobby. Waiting, adjusting, failing,
- 13:48trying again. boredom mixed with curiosity. The
- 13:52goal was never the perfect night. The goal was
- 13:55learning how to keep showing up. Here's the quiet
- 14:04shift that happens once you let go of the idea
- 14:07of the perfect night. A bad night of astronomy
- 14:11starts to look very different. Astronomy was
- 14:15never really about extraction. It isn't about
- 14:18pulling something out of the sky and taking it
- 14:20home with you. It's about showing up, paying
- 14:23attention, and learning how to be present with
- 14:25something that doesn't respond to pressure. Even
- 14:29a night where you packed up early still reminded
- 14:32you why you came out in the first place. An evening
- 14:36where nothing worked still deepened your understanding
- 14:39of how fragile those perfect moments really are.
- 14:43There's a temptation to think of astronomy as
- 14:46a transaction. I give the sky my time and effort
- 14:49and in return it gives me wonder. But the sky
- 14:53doesn't work that way. Sometimes it gives you
- 14:56a breathtaking view. Sometimes it gives you frustration
- 14:59and sometimes it gives you nothing at all. And
- 15:03yet we keep going back because occasionally we
- 15:06do have a rewarding experience. You're not doing
- 15:10astronomy wrong. This is just how the hobby works.
- 15:14If you need immediate gratification, just visit
- 15:16a planetarium. Astronomers keep coming back out
- 15:29under compromised skies, not for perfection or
- 15:33productivity or for content. But because there's
- 15:37value in returning to something that doesn't
- 15:40bend itself to your schedule. Because there's
- 15:43meaning in attention, even when the universe
- 15:46is indifferent. After a quick break, we'll be

- 16:23back. We begin this period with a first quarter
- 16:27moon late tonight, meaning about half the lunar
- 16:30disk is illuminated and rising. Until the 31st,
- 16:34the moon will wax toward gibbous, brightening
- 16:37each night and dominating the later evening sky.
- 16:41A waxing gibbous moon can interfere with deep
- 16:44sky observing, but it's excellent for lunar surface
- 16:47detail and earth shine around sunset. Jupiter
- 16:51will be prominent throughout this week, still
- 16:54glowing brightly after its recent opposition
- 16:56earlier in January and visible all night. It
- 17:01sits in Gemini near the bright stars Castor and
- 17:04Pollux. Saturn will be an evening planet after
- 17:08sunset, fading toward late evening as the week
- 17:11progresses. Uranus and Neptune remain in the
- 17:14evening sky in late January, but require binoculars
- 17:18or a small telescope to pick out. Be sure to
- 17:21check in with an app like Stellarium for the
- 17:24exact locations. Mercury, Venus, and Mars are
- 17:28too close to the Sun's glare during this period
- 17:31to be practical targets from most latitudes.
- 17:35Some notable deep sky objects are up during this
- 17:38period. Cruise through Gemini for lesser observed
- 17:42open clusters like NGC 2158, a compact but interesting
- 17:48cluster that's about 2 billion years old. It's
- 17:51located immediately southwest of another low
- 17:54-key target. Messier 35, also known as the Shoebuckle
- 18:00Cluster. Lepus the Hare, just south of Orion,
- 18:04is subtle to the eye but contains a few faint
- 18:07stars and can serve as a gateway to the faint
- 18:10galaxy NGC 1964 on dark nights. If you can pull
- 18:17it out of the darkness, NGC 1964 is a lovely
- 18:21barred spiral galaxy about 65 million light years
- 18:25away. Eridanus, the celestial river stretching
- 18:30from Orion toward the south, hosts scattered
- 18:33galaxy fields such as NGC 1533 and other magnitude
- 18:3810 to 11 galaxies that reward patient binocular
- 18:42or small telescope sweeps. NGC 1533 is a lenticular
- 18:48galaxy about 62 million light years away and
- 18:51resembles an oval blob with a bright core. By
- 18:55the way, when we refer to an object as Messier
- 18:5833 or NGC 2158, we're referring to their catalogued
- 19:03names. NGC means New General Catalog and Messier
- 19:09objects are named for the French astronomer Charles
- 19:12Messier who cataloged 110 objects in the 18th
- 19:17century. Even though major meteor showers like
- 19:20the quantarids peaked a few weeks earlier, observing
- 19:23sporadic meteors and satellites remains rewarding
- 19:27under dark skies, particularly earlier in the
- 19:30evening before the moon rises. Use a nice pair
- 19:33of binoculars after dusk and scan around the
- 19:36sky. With some patience, you're almost certain
- 19:39to see dozens of Starlink satellites zipping
- 19:42around. Space enthusiasts can point their star
- 19:46charts toward Ophiuchus before dawn to locate
- 19:50the rough region of Voyager 1, a fun conceptual
- 19:55target even though it's impossible to see with
- 19:57optical equipment. It's just nice knowing it's
- 20:00out there. The Sun turned the dial up to 11 last
- 20:10week, producing one of the most energetic space
- 20:13weather events in years. On January 18th and
- 20:1719th, a very strong X -class solar eruption sent
- 20:21a fast -moving cloud of magnetized plasma straight
- 20:25toward Earth. When that coronal mass ejection
- 20:29slammed into our planet's magnetic field on the
- 20:3119th, it stirred up a severe geomagnetic storm,
- 20:36officially rated G4, meaning the disturbance
- 20:38was intense enough to seriously shake Earth's
- 20:41magnetic environment. Under the right conditions,
- 20:46storms like this can drive auroras well outside
- 20:49the usual high latitude zones. And, indeed, reports
- 20:53and photos from around the northern hemisphere
- 20:55showed the aurora borealis lighting up skies
- 20:59farther south than usual on the night of the
- 21:01storm. Observers in parts of Europe, the U .S.,
- 21:05Southwest, and even mid -latitude regions shared
- 21:09images of unusual auroral activity, even though
- 21:12it didn't quite reach as far south as some forecast
- 21:15had hoped. Part of the reason the aurora displays
- 21:18were hit or miss for more southerly viewers comes
- 21:21down to magnetic geometry. Even though the storm
- 21:24was strong overall, the exact orientation of
- 21:28the incoming magnetic fields didn't always line
- 21:31up in a way that let the energy pour into Earth's
- 21:34upper atmosphere everywhere. That meant the auroras
- 21:37ended up being very bright where conditions were
- 21:40favorable, but more confined than some early
- 21:43predictions suggested. Solar physicists are calling
- 21:47this one of the most significant space weather
- 21:50events in the last couple of decades because
- 21:52there was an associated solar radiation storm,
- 21:56a prolonged high -energy particle flood that
- 21:59hasn't been seen at this scale in more than 20
