Transcript
- 0:00Right. Good afternoon.
- 0:01Welcome Miller and Condon on a football Friday.
- 0:03The Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the
- 0:08next couple of hours talking sports with you.
- 0:11Here's what's coming up on our program. 12:20 we will get Tom
- 0:14Kakert, hawkeyereport.com Hawks and Bucknell, the KC Center
- 0:19downtown tomorrow. It's a 5:00 tip.
- 0:21I know that there are still tickets available.
- 0:24That's something you, you know, didn't put on the calendar right
- 0:26off the bat and looking for some to do tomorrow.
- 0:28College football players are going on, but.
- 0:31The crap games though. They are at that point, you're
- 0:32right, but the Eagles and the Commanders will be all set to.
- 0:36Speaking of crap games. Speaking of which, so that's
- 0:39tomorrow, Iowa, Bucknell tomorrow at downtown.
- 0:41So we'll get into that with Tom. Obviously the Lavar Woods news
- 0:45may be as big as anything. Look forward to picking his
- 0:47brain on that. Caker 12/20.
- 0:50Then Mike Palm will hit the Las Vegas VP of operations at Circus
- 0:54Sports. What was that game like result
- 0:55wise for them and what do we see going forward this weekend?
- 1:001:00 Bama, Bob Trenton, I will do pine on the four playoff
- 1:03games that will be held this weekend.
- 1:05Couple of others stuck their way in there as well.
- 1:07And then Eugene rape who covers Iowa State latest on Iowa
- 1:11State's football, basketball, both men's and women's with
- 1:15Eugene. Our picks before we get out of
- 1:17here and turn things over and off the bench with Sean Roberts
- 1:19and Lucas Strain, Thursday Night Football, a lot of ways lived up
- 1:23to it. It was a very good finish.
- 1:24We get a little overtime. I still think they're the best
- 1:27two teams in football. I still think that the Rams have
- 1:30a little bit of an edge. Some crazy plays in the game,
- 1:33unbelievable outcomes. Nobody in the stadium, nobody on
- 1:37either sideline knew what we were about to undergo.
- 1:40And that was that two point play that I guess did the I, I missed
- 1:44this part. Did the replay alert obviously
- 1:48get, what's his name? Brad Allen didn't hit the
- 1:51referees here. How was this generated?
- 1:53That must 'cause there was no challenge flag.
- 1:55Right. It had to be the.
- 1:58Replay assist. Replay assist, which is garbage.
- 2:01It's a lot of ways. I mean, two years ago just
- 2:03showed up. Yep, we knew nothing about it,
- 2:05right? There's no rhyme or reason to
- 2:07it. Sometimes there is, so sometimes
- 2:09you know what, it speeds up the game.
- 2:11It does. But.
- 2:13And here's the caveat, how many times?
- 2:15Oh, yeah, replay assist should help them here.
- 2:17And it doesn't. And it doesn't.
- 2:19Yeah. And that leads to, well, this
- 2:22team, the Chiefs, get all the calls.
- 2:23Yeah. And replays this.
- 2:24Vegas Call. Yes, absolute Vegas made the the
- 2:27the morons, Yes, I mean, going back to that Raiders kick in the
- 2:30field goal, yeah, you you think that that many people were
- 2:34involved to make it? That's only one.
- 2:36Sports book in Las Vegas trend it.
- 2:38Just the idiocy. But that aside, yeah, replay
- 2:41assist. I like it.
- 2:42On the surface, yeah. I just wish we had a little bit
- 2:45more information about how it's done like the ACC has with the
- 2:48command center. I would like to see the behind
- 2:51the scenes. Will we get that?
- 2:51Of course not, no. And that will lead to questions.
- 2:54I hope the, I hope it expands in college football and if it does
- 2:57and continues to, you know, be popular and I don't know why it
- 3:00wouldn't be. Maybe it'll get to the NFL, but
- 3:02just a crazy game. Sam Darnold clutch no.
- 3:06Are you ready to go there? Absolutely not.
- 3:08Did he show you anything? Seemed Arnold.
- 3:12Yeah, I, I couldn't believe. I mean, I really truly could
- 3:15now. One of them that that was a hell
- 3:17of a defensive play. The other one just, you know,
- 3:20you just you can't make it up. We're having such a different
- 3:24narrative, not because the same time he was good in overtime.
- 3:26I mean, that drive was good. The drive tied up was good, but
- 3:32if she he doesn't have the punt return.
- 3:33Oh my, yes. You're probably changing your
- 3:36tune completely. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:38And Sam Darnold and Seahawks. And look at all this money I've
- 3:40wasted because this team is not going to win 3 or 4 consecutive
- 3:44games in order to win a Super Bowl.
- 3:46What was I thinking? Now you have hope.
- 3:50But if we get the rematch, even in Seattle?
- 3:52Well, I like the Rams, absolutely.
- 3:53I like the Rams a lot. I mean, the Rams gave up what, a
- 3:5614 point lead with the in into the fourth quarter, something
- 4:01along those lines. It was very tight at that point.
- 4:03The two teams, I got to get this one in front.
- 4:05I saw this one earlier. The statistics that they've put
- 4:10up, they're they're all right. Here we go.
- 4:12The two games this year, they split the season.
- 4:14Rams have outscored the Seahawks 58 to 57 total yards, 830 for
- 4:19the Rams, 829 for the Seahawks. I mean, there's just almost
- 4:23identical, right? But I still think the Rams are
- 4:25better. I do.
- 4:26Pukunaku is so damn good. Matthew Stafford likewise.
- 4:31They can run the football. Their defence let him down a
- 4:33little bit. There was the 3rd and 19 play in
- 4:36the football game right up the middle.
- 4:38It's like they were waving the flag there.
- 4:39You know, get the punter ready and boom, he he picks up 21 on
- 4:42the play. I still think the Rams are the
- 4:45best team in the league. I think the Seattle's legit.
- 4:47I think we're sleeping on the Niners in some respects.
- 4:51I, I think so to win this division, they're still better
- 4:54than plus 3:50 to win. This division, it's up to them
- 4:57now. They can be the one seat.
- 4:59Yes, they hold their destined playoff destiny in their hands.
- 5:03They win out number one seed. They're going to be the number
- 5:05one seed and they'll have the tiebreaker obviously against
- 5:07Seattle because they'll get both sides of that one.
- 5:09That's. The final game of the regular.
- 5:10Season, they would knock their Bears out.
- 5:12Even if the Bears win this week, they knock them down a peg with
- 5:14a win against them. So the first game must have been
- 5:17in. Oh, that was week one.
- 5:19Yeah, I think it was really early in the year.
- 5:21It wasn't week 1. I think it was.
- 5:22It was early. I think it was week one of the
- 5:24regular season in Seattle. Anyways, fun game last night
- 5:28really was let's go to Lavar Woods because this happened just
- 5:31after we got off the air yesterday that he announced he's
- 5:35moving on to Michigan State. So I first heard of this popped
- 5:38into my head. Well, he's kind of been told
- 5:40it's, you know, you don't have a chance of getting Kirk's job
- 5:43once it's all said and done. The more I'm thinking about it,
- 5:46I'm thinking that maybe there's something in the works behind
- 5:49the scenes that he was because I truly believe this.
- 5:53He's been at Iowa's entire career, right?
- 5:56Why don't, I mean, other schools do things properly, not the Iowa
- 6:01way. And that's OK.
- 6:02So if you take a little snippet that you pick up from Fitz and
- 6:05who knows he's they all likelihood going to do that.
- 6:08I think it's more likely that he gets a longer look at the head
- 6:12coach because he's got this mission.
- 6:14You can state on his resume is that.
- 6:16Crazy. Well, and there's nothing that
- 6:18they could do. They box themselves into a
- 6:20corner, At least in this scenario when they named Seth
- 6:23Wallace the associate head coach.
- 6:25You can't have associate to the associate, right?
- 6:27No, you could only have one yes. I mean, you could, but it would
- 6:31be a bad luck, I think. But to do something like that,
- 6:34they had to do that because Seth was looking around.
- 6:36He's still not a defensive coordinator and he wants to
- 6:40obviously elevate himself. Well, this is a way to keep Seth
- 6:43Wallace in the field. That move to take the Minnesota
- 6:45job as ADC and there's been other programs that have come
- 6:48after him, so you keep away from that.
- 6:50So let me stop it. When Ferris leaves, does Parker
- 6:52leave? Yeah, I think so too.
- 6:55But when that happened, remember Levar was to the finish line
- 7:01with the Tampa job Tampa Bay I. Do remember that I didn't
- 7:04remember that, but now I do. And it it felt like there for 24
- 7:08hours that he was gone and he was a finalist for that job.
- 7:11Eventually didn't get it, but he was looking around and I think
- 7:16for him and he said in the press conference yesterday, he wants
- 7:19to be a head coach. This is something where it's
- 7:21going to allow him, like you said, learn from somebody to
- 7:24write get and he moved to Iowa City.
- 7:27He said this in the press conference.
- 7:28He moved to Iowa City not to coach just he wanted to have his
- 7:30kids grow up in Iowa. You know, they were in Arizona.
- 7:33They were all over the place and he wanted to come back there.
- 7:36He wasn't doing it to be a college I.
- 7:38Couldn't hear the press conference.
- 7:39I didn't know that. His degree, I think is an
- 7:41elementary education and he was going to be a high school coach
- 7:44and coach PE and or coach 4th graders or something like that.
- 7:47And that was going to be his gig.
- 7:50But he was around the program. They found a spot for him.
- 7:52And obviously the way that he is elevated, what he's done with
- 7:54the Iowa special teams, gosh, yeah.
- 7:55Which was awful. I like the way he handles the
- 7:57press conferences when he's part of it.
- 7:59So when you first heard it, what was what?
- 8:01What popped into your head? I was devastated because I just
- 8:04like Lavar a lot. Boy, he's really popular.
- 8:06Yeah, he truly is. He is such a good person.
- 8:11The few interactions that I've had with him is just good.
- 8:13Dude. We're about the same age, knew
- 8:15some of his friends when we're at Iowa at the same time and
- 8:18just everybody had nothing but great things to say when you're
- 8:21a 21 year knucklehead. He wasn't.
- 8:23I mean, he was just a dude and building that bridge between the
- 8:26Fry era into the Kirk era, so many good things about that.
- 8:29So I was, I mean, of all the coaches, he's just a guy that I
- 8:32kind of like the most. You know he just.
- 8:34And you're not alone for some reason.
- 8:35Yeah, I think you probably just like he's just a.
- 8:38Good guy. Yeah.
- 8:39So I was devastated by that part.
- 8:40The special teams, because Iowa has to win special, Yes.
- 8:43The way that they're built, they have to be elite in special
- 8:46teams. And when they didn't, that's
- 8:47when he saw the dirt downturn in the late night, late aughts.
- 8:51You know, that O 6 to O 9 range before they turn it around.
- 8:54Special teams were brutal. And it wasn't just kicking game.
- 8:57It was a lot of different aspects.
- 8:59He fixed that. I think he's very the way that
- 9:02he thinks about the game. You see him on the sidelines
- 9:05celebrating with the special teams guys and and doing that.
- 9:08Yeah, I was devastated by that part of it.
- 9:11But he wants this opportunity, he's the head coach and if this
- 9:14is going to give him a better opportunity.
- 9:16Think that's exactly what's behind it.
- 9:18I really do. I guess you you can't be bad.
- 9:20No, you can't. You can't.
- 9:21And maybe, well, I'm, I'm sure that that has come up with a
- 9:24conversation with ferrets, you know, when he told him that this
- 9:27is, or maybe this is both of them.
- 9:29Well, yeah, I think he knew. Kurt, he probably gave him the
- 9:31blessing, right? Because he's coached in the bowl
- 9:33game, yes. Oh absolutely.
- 9:35Now I also heard the Fitz. That wasn't the only phone call.
- 9:38He may die with City. That pissed me off.
- 9:40Who does he? Want.
- 9:41Well, you send your son there. There, you're hanging around the
- 9:43program and now you're trying to pluck everybody away.
- 9:45Do you want Lester? You know, Pat Fitzgerald's back
- 9:47to Public Enemy number one. I hope they break his other leg.
- 9:51I hope somebody rolls up on him. Only have.
- 9:52One in the Big 10, No. Well, because you got Fleck.
- 9:55So what are we going to? Do here Fleck is very, very
- 9:58difficult to unseat. OK, it's very.
- 10:01So it's Public Enemy #2. Yes.
- 10:03But yeah, hopefully Fitz gets rolled up on on the sideline
- 10:05when I when Michigan State faces off and they can blow out his
- 10:08other knee like he did when he was playing that.
- 10:11He held that against the Hawkeyes and still did, at least
- 10:13until he sent his son there. There's some people that think
- 10:16his son might still stick around.
- 10:19Interesting. Right now, not everybody wants
- 10:21to play for your dad. And that could be a component of
- 10:24it. Maybe it's just doesn't want to
- 10:26have to deal with that part of it.
- 10:28And the other component is Mason Woods, who's a stud, an absolute
- 10:32physical specimen. Sounds like he's going to stick
- 10:34around Iowa City, too. Yeah.
- 10:36So that was another one of my. Oh, boy.
- 10:39Is he going to be leaving, too? No.
- 10:40Sounds like Mason's going to be there.
- 10:41Yep, the sun's going with pops. Well, we shall see.
- 10:44All right, Tom Kaker coming up, we can pick his brain on on
- 10:48that. The women's news as well with
- 10:50Rodriguez. We'll get into that.
- 10:52Couple of things to get to with Tom Kaker.
- 10:54Look forward to doing so. Mike Palm will join us from Las
- 10:58Vegas. You still got an opportunity to
- 11:00get into Derek Stevens wallet. This final opportunity there.
- 11:04The final couple of days of this contest.
- 11:05The final day will be on Sunday. You bet $100 and you would be
- 11:11eligible to bet it all at once. Bet it's over the course of
- 11:14tonight. Do you like tonight's game?
- 11:15You like tomorrow's game, Sunday's NFL slate, you want to
- 11:18bet futures, etcetera? You can do so as long as you bet
- 11:20$100. You will get a share, $100 in
- 11:23total, a share of Derek Stevens wattage about 500.
- 11:26You get 2 shares. Let's get Mike in Waterloo, then
- 11:29we're going to time out get to Tom Keikert.
- 11:31Mike, how are you? Hey, pretty good guys.
- 11:34Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas my friend.
- 11:37Hey, I had one question, Lavar Woods with my favored for the
- 11:40Iowa State job, but we got Jimmy Rogers and I got a question
- 11:45about Rocco. Will he be out for spring
- 11:48practice with that? Yeah, surgery on his shoulder.
- 11:52So what if one of these two other quarterbacks shine during
- 11:56spring practice? That's the.
- 11:57Case. What what what do you think the
- 12:01would Rocco, would they have tryouts or what do you guys?
- 12:04I hope it's a competition. I really.
- 12:06Do. I don't think it will.
- 12:06Be, I don't think. Are you convinced he's staying?
- 12:09No. But if Rocco stays, it's his
- 12:11job. You think so?
- 12:12There might be window dressing, but I would be floored if he's
- 12:16not the starter come game one. I know he's incredibly popular.
- 12:19Yes, and that's a huge component.
- 12:21To him, right? Hey, you guys, one more thing.
- 12:24You know that that guard from Iowa State, that freshman, you
- 12:27know, you know I don't. Basketball tour, you mean?
- 12:32Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Football, you know.
- 12:35What? I don't care if he scores, I
- 12:37just. Want ohh he plays deep he's.
- 12:38A great defender. Ohh, my defense, what do you
- 12:41guys? I think you're 100% right, Mike.
- 12:43I really do. Mike, listen, Merry Christmas,
- 12:45we don't talk to you. Happy New Year, buddy.
- 12:47Got a great show, thanks. Guys, thank you, Mike.
- 12:49I appreciate you listening. Yeah, Tour is unbelievable.
- 12:52And, and I agree with Mike, maybe Mike's call of the year.
- 12:55Well, yes, right, that was a good one.
- 12:56It was a good one. I'm with Mike.
- 12:58I mean, I want him to score, but I just love watching this kid on
- 13:01the defensive end of the floor. And I think when we talk about
- 13:05the quarterback, there's going to be a lot of love for Alex
- 13:07Manson. There is, absolutely.
- 13:09Wonder where he's getting his mail?
- 13:11Because you think Matsky might be the one out.
- 13:13No, no, no. If Rocco stays, he's going to
- 13:17get some phone calls. I mean, this guy opened a ton of
- 13:19eyes at Elite 11. He's going to have opportunities
- 13:23too. Trent.
- 13:23This is when it when it when Campbell first left, and this
- 13:26wasn't a really popular take. I thought maybe it would be
- 13:29better if I would stay for Rocco to go.
- 13:31And not that he's a fresh start. Yeah, it's a fresh start, but
- 13:35he's got one year of eligibility left and you've got Masky and
- 13:37you've got three more after that.
- 13:38How many games did he play in? He's right.
- 13:41So. So he's got three years for sure
- 13:43left and and I'm with you, the potential I get it's the P word,
- 13:48but the potential is there. I don't think it's yes, it would
- 13:51be. He's your guy.
- 13:52You want your quarterback to stay facing the program.
- 13:55All those checks, all those boxes, Great guy off the field.
- 13:58He's a cyclone seemingly through and through.
- 14:00You love him for that. I get it.
- 14:02You lost your head coach you absolutely adored.
- 14:03You don't want to lose your quarterback at the same time.
- 14:06But would it be the worsted worst decision that ever made in
- 14:09the long run for your program? I don't think it would be.
- 14:12No. I don't think it would be.
- 14:14And some of the the pressure that might be there, like if
- 14:17Rocco leaves and I think the reality is going to hit
- 14:19everybody, this is going to be a rebuild, even a schedule that is
- 14:21not overly daunting, right? It is going to be a rebuild.
- 14:24And maybe that resets the expectations for year #1 people
- 14:27can call it year zero and you can kind of go down that road.
- 14:30Route 2 for Rogers. No, I think that's all fair.
- 14:32All right, Tom Caker coming up next.
- 14:34Miller and Condon underway on a Friday.
- 14:36Glad you're with us to talk sports with you and do so right
- 14:38until 2:00 here today. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 14:41Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 14:43Welcome back. It's the morning sports station
- 14:45one O 6.3 KX&O. That's the flagships, the Iowa
- 14:49Sports Radio Network. Welcome to those of you joining
- 14:52us across the state of Iowa. Actually, those of you might be
- 14:54traveling through the state of Iowa on your way to visit
- 14:57family. Glad you're with us.
- 14:58All right, let's get to Tom Caker.
- 15:00We'll head to Las Vegas in about 15 minutes.
- 15:02Catch up with Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circus Sports, a
- 15:06Dubuque native, born and raised there.
- 15:08But right now, Tom Caker talking Hawks.
- 15:10Hello, Tom Trenton, Ken, how are you, Sir?
- 15:12I'm good I wish I was my palm and in Vegas, but you know
- 15:16that's OK yeah mid 70s we'll go we'll go visit.
- 15:21I'll I'll be in Tampa on the 26th, so.
- 15:23OK, then. You know what?
- 15:24That's good. I'm glad I was going to ask you
- 15:26that at some point during our conversation.
- 15:27When do you get there so Trent and I can make plans to have you
- 15:30from Tampa. Good stuff.
- 15:33Well, obviously, the the the the news, there's a couple of news
- 15:36items yesterday, the Rodriguez and but the Lavar Woods was the
- 15:40one that really reverberated. Just your take, Tom.
- 15:44Did it come out of the blue? Were there any whispers that
- 15:46this was kind of, you know, you know, percolating behind the
- 15:49scenes at all? There were.
- 15:51Some stuff that I had heard over the weekend and shared with a
- 15:56couple of people just kind of checking around to say, you
- 15:59know, somebody kind of said to me, hey, there might be some
- 16:02staff movement, but I didn't think it was going to be at this
- 16:05level, but it was interesting. And it makes sense, right,
- 16:13Because Levar want, you know, he basically said it yesterday.
- 16:16He wants to be a head coach and he's going to get that, you
- 16:22know, assistant head coach, title associate head coach,
- 16:25however they term it these days. And that looks better on your
- 16:30resume and and perhaps that'll springboard him into being a
- 16:34head coach. I think ultimately he wants to
- 16:37be in that conversation to be the next head coach at the
- 16:41University of Iowa, so he had probably had to go somewhere
- 16:44else to potentially make that happen.
- 16:48Any potential names to replace Levar Woods?
- 16:51Is there anybody that either in house makes sense?
- 16:53Any connections as you go through it?
- 16:55And these are big shoes to fill what Levar has done with these
- 16:58special teams. Any names jump out to you, Tom.
- 17:02Yeah, in house, you know, Chris Belize has been with them.
- 17:06He was a great assist with them. Some NFL experience, I believe
- 17:11had some, you know, experience at like UT Martin and other
- 17:15places work special teams there. He's been on the road recruiting
- 17:20for them. So kind of he would he would
- 17:25make sense. I know he's well thought of the
- 17:30other guy. The other thought I had was one,
- 17:34if you moved Abdul Hajj to special teams coordinator and
- 17:39there's one of the analysts is Billy Vandermeet.
- 17:42And he is, he's a guy who worked with Tim Lester for three years
- 17:48at Western Michigan. So they're really, you know, he
- 17:53brought him in to be an analyst because he's really comfortable
- 17:56with them. He's done some tight end
- 17:58coaching in the past. So it just maybe that's another
- 18:04way you could make this work internally is it's moved Billy
- 18:07into that tight end position, move Abdul into special teams.
- 18:13No more coaching movement, do you think on the staff, Tom,
- 18:16this was it or was there another one maybe?
- 18:19I I think this is probably it. What about you?
- 18:23Never say never because you remember Liddell Betts jumped at
- 18:28a very late hour. So you never know when, you
- 18:32know, the NFL stuff starts happening and staff get put
- 18:35together and you're like, OK, I guess he's going to the NFL.
- 18:39But I I right now, I think everything is quiet.
- 18:44You know, I know some places have made runs at, at Seth
- 18:47Wallace, you know, conversations with Tim Lester, but they seem
- 18:52like they're going to stick around Iowa City.
- 18:55What about bowl opt outs and hearing anything there have not?
- 19:01Other than, you know, Jackson Stratton, I think everybody's
- 19:05going to stick around and then, you know, once the boys over you
- 19:08guys, then you're going to see a few guys jump in the portal.
- 19:11And but I think everybody, both teams, Vanderbilt and Iowa are
- 19:17just kind of sticking around and going to do the bowl thing.
- 19:20And then and then you see guys get in the portal and you'll see
- 19:24Iowa getting more active in the portal.
- 19:28It's weird. It's like, you know how NFL free
- 19:31agency is where, you know, yeah, they're not supposed to be
- 19:36talking or nothing. But like then the minute the
- 19:39free agency starts like 5 deals that are hey, just signed a four
- 19:43year deal worth $36 million. And it's one minute after
- 19:47midnight. One minute it's like, how does
- 19:50that happen? Whoa, OK, I guess you've been
- 19:52talking to the agents and that's how all this is going is like
- 19:56you're talking to agents and they're kind of doing all the
- 19:59leg work with. You know, GMs and player
- 20:02personnel guys. Kirk was asked yesterday during
- 20:05the press conference about the quarterback position.
- 20:07Feels like they're in good shape with Hank Brown and Jeremy
- 20:10Hecklinski, but more Purbula, who they were incredibly close
- 20:14to getting a year ago. That didn't happen.
- 20:15He is at Mizzou. He's back in the portal.
- 20:18What can you tell us your Intel saying about the quarterback
- 20:20spot? I think they're going to go
- 20:24forward with what they have and just, and unless one of those
- 20:30guys left, unless Iklinski left or Hank Brown left, then the
- 20:36dynamic changes. If Ryan Fitzgerald leaves and
- 20:42goes to play for his dad, then you're probably just going to go
- 20:47out and find an arm. And I think they've got guys
- 20:50that they're kind of keeping warm in that regard, but it's
- 20:53not going to be, it'd be more like a Jackson Stratton kind of
- 20:58player to come in then then a Kate McNamara or Mark Gronowski.
- 21:04And that's the big thing is now you don't have, you know, if you
- 21:07keep those guys and you think like you're going to have
- 21:11Heklinski or Hank Brown beer starter, then you don't have to
- 21:16expend the resources. And you can devote some of that
- 21:21to another position that's usually pretty expensive, which
- 21:25is defensive tackle, which is what they probably really need
- 21:28in the portal this year. And wide receiver, you can spend
- 21:31a little bit more where they where they haven't been able to
- 21:34do that. And you know, given Iowa's
- 21:37offense, they probably have to pay a tax for what some of these
- 21:41high end wide receivers, you know, if you know what I mean,
- 21:44if you guys know what I mean. Sure.
- 21:46No, absolutely do. Is there anything to the Lutmer
- 21:49rumor that's I know it's on your board.
- 21:51Are you, is there anything to that that Nebraska is going to
- 21:54open up the checkbook to that? I mean, I have no idea what the
- 21:57going rate. He had a hell of a year.
- 21:58I thought he really came on Is is that rumor true?
- 22:03I have no idea. Nothing would surprise me that
- 22:08that offers get made. I would be very, very, very,
- 22:11very, very shocked if Zach Blumner left good, very shocked.
- 22:15So I I don't anticipate him leaving Iowa.
- 22:20And, you know, you can, I'm sure if you just, you know, if you
- 22:25did get those, those things, you know, I know there are certain
- 22:28schools that we're trying to lure Trevor Lauk into the
- 22:33portal, you know, that that, that we're looking to try to get
- 22:38him to jump in and, and, and. He's got two years left, right?
- 22:42Yeah, he does. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:45I think maybe, maybe a team that might be in the College Football
- 22:49Playoff might have been trying to lure him in.
- 22:51Bring him back home, the Hoosiers.
- 22:53Yeah, maybe phone. Call from Notre Dame.
- 22:55Yeah, a couple of them out there.
- 22:57Quarterback that I see there in on it was just somebody who was
- 23:00recently into the portal, it'll come to me.
- 23:04I mean we're talking about Indiana quarterback.
- 23:05I think he's a one year. Indiana.
- 23:07Yeah. Oh, you know what is it's it's
- 23:09your guy from TCU, Hoover. Josh Hoover.
- 23:12Hoover, Yeah. He'll get somebody.
- 23:15Yeah, he will. He'll get somebody somewhere.
- 23:17Todd, We see TJ Washington. Washington has entered the
- 23:21transfer portal, just didn't click.
- 23:23You know, freshman year he was playing both wide receiver and
- 23:26running back. You wonder maybe if you would
- 23:28have stayed a wide receiver what it could have been.
- 23:29But OK, he moves on. You feel good about the running
- 23:33backroom returning another year. Bolton, he's your starter.
- 23:37Obviously Xavier Williams, we saw glimpses out of him of the
- 23:39freshman McNeil jazzy on Patterson.
- 23:42But if another one of those certainly younger guys, you
- 23:44wonder about Patterson, but younger guys leaves.
- 23:47Do they have to re evaluate what they're doing in the running
- 23:49backroom? Yeah, I kind of hinted a couple
- 23:54weeks ago that seemed like just the scuttlebutt was that, that
- 23:58there was going to be some movement in the running
- 24:00backroom. But I thought most of it would
- 24:02happen after the after the bowl. And I don't think they're done.
- 24:06I think there's probably at least one, maybe two more guys
- 24:09that that will will jump in there.
- 24:12But I I think the good news is there.
- 24:14You know, Kamari seems happy and I think Mcneil's pretty happy
- 24:20too. So I, I, I think he's OK.
- 24:26But you know, beyond that, it's maybe a little bit up in the
- 24:29air, but we'll, we'll see. There'll be some other running
- 24:32backs in the, in the portal. And I, I think that's an
- 24:35attractive position for for, for somebody to come in, given the
- 24:41way that Iowa runs the football. So I think somebody would be
- 24:46attracted to coming in if there's some opportunities
- 24:49there. Emily Rodriguez with with the
- 24:53Iowa women's team. So my as as I've tell Trent
- 24:56Trent aware of this, my college women's college basketball goes
- 24:59all the way back to Caitlin Clark's junior year.
- 25:02Did did bluter or or and then Jensen.
- 25:07Have they dealt with something like this before?
- 25:09Is this all new to them, Tom? I mean, they're certainly making
- 25:11it hard for her, not hard for her to leave, but they're sure
- 25:16not closing any doors, which is, you know, in some respects very
- 25:19commendable that they're doing that.
- 25:20But have they gone through this before, Tom?
- 25:23Yeah, I'm sure they have with different players over the
- 25:26years, but I, you know, this one's, this one's unique because
- 25:34I think it it's coming down to like fit with style of play more
- 25:38than off the court. It's it's on the court kind of
- 25:42stuff that where she's kind of a freelancer in a little bit of
- 25:48ways and likes to kind of operate on her own and, and and
- 25:52do some things and, and they want to use their system.
- 25:56And so that's that's I think where the problem was now.
- 26:01She was dinged up. She was hurt.
- 26:04But I think it's just kind of exacerbated since then.
- 26:08And I'm guessing for somebody who grew up in, you know, the
- 26:14Dominican Republic and spent a lot of her time in South
- 26:18Florida, this month has not been the greatest month in the world
- 26:22for somebody like that to be in the state of Iowa, just not been
- 26:27very hospitable. So that might be part of it,
- 26:31too. They're working through it.
- 26:34We'll see what happens after the semester ends.
- 26:39What, what, what she does. But hopefully they can get
- 26:45things settled down, get her, get on the same page with her
- 26:49and get her on the same page with them.
- 26:50And, and she can help contribute because she is a talent, she's a
- 26:55really good player and and somebody who could bring scoring
- 27:00punch to the team. So I hope they they figure it
- 27:04out because I was really impressed with her with what I I
- 27:08saw thus far the season. Tom last 30 seconds for you.
- 27:12UConn number one team in the country tomorrow for them
- 27:15without Emily Rodriguez. You're a gambler.
- 27:18If I gave you 20, is that enough?
- 27:20You need 25. You need 30.
- 27:22How many going to need to bet on the Hawkeyes?
- 27:23Keep going. I need to.
- 27:25I might need 25. Yeah, might need 25.
- 27:27They just beat, didn't they just beat USC by 28?
- 27:30Yeah. Good God at USC.
- 27:33They're another level, yeah. By the sounds of it's.
- 27:36And and USC is probably right there with Iowa.
- 27:39I think they're pretty similarly evaluated in terms of rank and
- 27:43everything. So yeah, Yukon's good.
- 27:48This just in. Do you know Ariana has a good
- 27:51basketball? Imagine that.
- 27:53Hey, Thomas, we're out of time, buddy.
- 27:54We'll talk to you from Tampa. Merry Christmas to you and your
- 27:56family, Tom. Thanks for what you do for Trent
- 27:58and I appreciate it, brother. Absolutely, guys.
- 28:01Merry Christmas to all your listeners and you guys.
- 28:03Thank you. Take care, Tom Kecker,
- 28:05hawkeyereport.com, as we check in on Iowa.
- 28:07Off to Las Vegas. When we come back, Mike Palm, VP
- 28:10of Operations at Circa Sports. That's next.
- 28:12Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 28:18I'm Miller. Condon.
- 28:19Welcome back final segment, hour number one, Bama Bob Trent now
- 28:22go round college football kick off hour 2, Eugene repay.
- 28:26Des Moines Register covers the Cyclones.
- 28:29He'll join us at 1:30 and then circus sports sponsors our picks
- 28:33as we will try and extend our lead over the knuckleheads in
- 28:36the afternoon. We are in front and drawing
- 28:38clear. Let's get to Mike Palm.
- 28:41Mike. Too cocky.
- 28:42Yeah. VP of operations.
- 28:45Long time there is. I know.
- 28:46Here's Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circus Sports.
- 28:49Hi, Mike. How are you?
- 28:50Trenton, Ken. Merry Christmas to you and
- 28:51yours. How are you?
- 28:53Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.
- 28:55Thank you very much and to all the listeners.
- 28:57Absolutely. So I'm going to get a share of
- 29:00Derek's wallet. I know Trent is as well.
- 29:03I think this is when it's all said and done, this might be
- 29:06pretty successful promotion or is it trending in that direction
- 29:09so far? Mike, do you have any details on
- 29:12that? Yeah, I can tell you how many
- 29:14shares were earned. We just got the report for ended
- 29:17day yesterday. So still 3 days left to go 7 in
- 29:20the books, but we'll include, you know, College Football
- 29:23Playoffs today and tomorrow and, and, and this week. 16 of the
- 29:30NFL. So 174 individuals have earned
- 29:34274 shares. So there's easy math, right?
- 29:38100 a hundred that 74 people have earned double shares and
- 29:44100 have earned single share, vice versa.
- 29:48But only about 10 new accounts so far.
- 29:50So we're going to pick up some new new accounts along the way
- 29:54this weekend. Yeah, this is.
- 29:55Right now, the shares are. Right now, the shares are worth
- 29:58$365. How about that?
- 30:00That's a pretty nice one and. And the and the promotion.
- 30:02Yeah, and you know, we've talked about this is with the new app
- 30:05coming out and people that, you know, kind of went through that
- 30:07transition. But this is for new customers
- 30:08too. If you haven't turned up for
- 30:09signed up for the Circus Sports Iowa app, make sure you do that
- 30:13and you have an opportunity here to bet $100 can be $100 bet can
- 30:16be $1010.00 bets and you'll earn a share of Derek's wallet.
- 30:19Love the sound of that bike and really really fun promotion you
- 30:22guys are doing here for us back in the state of Iowa.
- 30:26With that being said, I had a local question for you, the bowl
- 30:31game with Iowa and Vandy Vanderbilt, Diego Pavia.
- 30:34What happened at the Heisman cerebot after the Heisman
- 30:37ceremony out clubbing the the Indiana sign that he had all
- 30:40those different things. Do you anticipate that of the
- 30:43non playoff games, Vanderbilt Iowa is going to be one of the
- 30:47more bet games when we get there?
- 30:48And have you seen much action on that game as it pertains in
- 30:51comparison to the other bowl games?
- 30:53We've seen a little bit, but it's tough and I'll tell you
- 30:59why. It's because we have very low
- 31:00limits on these games. Guys, there's so much
- 31:03uncertainty. Who's going to play, who's going
- 31:07to coach? Who cares how much are they
- 31:10going to play? If they play, it's really hard.
- 31:12I'm going to tell you, you know, four or five years ago we used
- 31:14to take 30 on a side and 20 on a total on a bowl game, on a non
- 31:18playoff bowl game, right? A regular bowl game, you know,
- 31:21we're this year we're taking 2000 on the side and 1000 on the
- 31:24total. Just it's it's really hard to
- 31:27book this stuff. You know, the play was to the
- 31:30under in this first game and West Day was 14.
- 31:32Nothing in the first minute. Western Michigan.
- 31:34I mean, so it's it's it's really tough.
- 31:38Look, looking through what we've taken so far as as far as bowl
- 31:45games that have been bet Tennessee, Illinois, I will
- 31:52Vandy a little bit. The biggest one that's been bet
- 31:55is Michigan. Texas has the most right on it
- 31:59so far and that's what people betting Texas right now.
- 32:03It's Michigan program, all the turmoil that they have
- 32:06surrounding and I could definitely see that tomorrow
- 32:08night, Bears versus Packers. I think it'll it'll do.
- 32:11You'll do more right on it than the 2 college football games
- 32:14with the, you know, the group of five schools maybe by
- 32:17significant margin more on Bears, Packers with the old Miss
- 32:21Tulane game and the James Madison Oregon game.
- 32:24Mike. Well, we took a we took a six
- 32:27figure bed on on Oregon. So that, that may sway that,
- 32:32that idea that we had there. And we've taken a lot of money
- 32:37on the Miami, Texas A&M game. We've already, we've already
- 32:40written close to $1,000,000 on that game.
- 32:43And, and I wonder if it was that night, what we would have done.
- 32:46But, but it will rival maybe the Bears Packers, right?
- 32:49But we've had some significant action and it's, it's all on the
- 32:53Miami side so far. So they're betting the Bears,
- 32:56they're betting the, as I call them the Crown Point Bears, and
- 32:59they're betting Miami Hurricane. Oh, Kevin Warren, that guy, he
- 33:04is, he is one of one that is for sure.
- 33:06Hopefully we do not have the Gary IN Bears, but that's a
- 33:09conversation for a different day.
- 33:10Mike, with that, what are you seeing in the Bears, Packers
- 33:14match up in terms of a handle that you guys are seeing for
- 33:17that match up? You have to anticipate all the
- 33:19injuries to Green Bay, what we just saw a couple weeks ago.
- 33:22There's some injuries too, though.
- 33:23They do. And wide receiver, the most
- 33:25important there are you guys sitting currently bears -2.
- 33:30Yeah, we went to two this morning.
- 33:31Remember, we opened this game Packers 2 1/2.
- 33:35And so it's come all the way. Of course, you know, Packers had
- 33:37injuries and and obviously the scheduling spot is better for
- 33:42the Bears. The Packers come off a tough
- 33:44game in Denver and the Bears with a public workout against
- 33:48the Browns. You've got a revenge tractor.
- 33:52Yeah, it's it's probably the biggest, biggest regular season
- 33:55game at Soldier Field in a decade, right.
- 33:57I mean, this is this is for the really the two seed in the NFC.
- 34:00It would appear so and possibly the one so, but they're betting
- 34:06the bears and and bears money line too.
- 34:09Some people are laying one 1 1/2.
- 34:11You've seen a lot of money line too.
- 34:12People don't want to get caught up there if it's a if it's a one
- 34:15or two point game. But I'm waiting.
- 34:18I'm waiting to see if it gets to 2 1/2.
- 34:20Do we get to buy back on the Packers or would it have to get
- 34:23to 3? But I don't think it can get to
- 34:243. What about Jacksonville, Denver.
- 34:27Mike? I mean Broncos fan so of course
- 34:29I'm intrigued by it, but as a Broncos fan I'm a little nervous
- 34:32about this for some reason. I took 3 1/2 when it went to 3
- 34:361/2. Yeah, I just Jacksonville's
- 34:40defense is good. They haven't lost.
- 34:43They haven't lost since they're by and they've been beating
- 34:46teams by margin. They've had some fortune of the
- 34:49schedule, but they've played well.
- 34:52Lawrence has played a little better.
- 34:53I I think they're defensively sound.
- 34:55I hated their their game plan against Seattle where they let
- 34:58JSN just beat them over the top three different times.
- 35:01I hated that. But other than that, they've
- 35:03been a team. I compare them to the Bears a
- 35:06bit. The chains in leadership.
- 35:08You bring in competence, you bring in play calling and I mean
- 35:12just that and. Then Jacoby Myers more wins.
- 35:16Yeah, that's true. You know, my friend used to say
- 35:19it was the John Fox theory. You can win 9 games in the NFL
- 35:23just by being competent. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:25And that's kind of how he was, right?
- 35:27Good enough career at it, not great.
- 35:29Good enough, you know, and collected a lot of paychecks
- 35:32Sunday night. Baltimore a favorite against New
- 35:35England. Head scratching this Baltimore
- 35:37team. I know they took him to
- 35:39Cincinnati last week, but I don't know if they should be
- 35:41favored against most anybody. A weird game, a game that a lot
- 35:45of public money I know on the New England side of things.
- 35:47What are you guys seeing there? And and if Baltimore wins,
- 35:50Pittsburgh loses, then the look ahead for week 17 doesn't matter
- 35:54for Pittsburgh. A lot of just kind of different
- 35:57intriguing parts about this and those look ahead lines that go
- 36:00along with it for Week 17 and 18.
- 36:03The market still loves these Ravens, don't they?
- 36:05I mean, every week, if they're betting this is if they're
- 36:08remembering the Ravens teams for the last four or five years,
- 36:11they haven't played up to it. I, I don't know even if last
- 36:14week was that did it. But Cincinnati was just so
- 36:16listless on offense. Maybe the best game Baltimore
- 36:20played was a game without Lamar. The game they played against the
- 36:23Bears might have been the best full 60 minutes they played all
- 36:26year. I'm interested to see how this
- 36:28young New England team bounces back from, you know, they were
- 36:32up 17 1/2 and yet they knew the freight train was coming.
- 36:35And honestly, they didn't do enough offensively.
- 36:38I mean, you know, Josh Allen's going to get his team back in
- 36:40the game. You have to keep scoring, and
- 36:41they were only able to score once in the second-half.
- 36:43So I haven't played the game, but I'm interested to see how
- 36:47how New England responds to a little adversity.
- 36:50Yeah, my theory is if you can still bet the Chiefs Super Bowl
- 36:53futures, people still would. Really.
- 36:56Hey, you know, I got I want to ask you this our love for
- 37:00hockey, the wild 30 to one just when the trade was enough.
- 37:05This is a massive hockey trade. Mike Quinn Hughes, the second
- 37:08best defenseman in the league, the best American board
- 37:10defenseman currently plying his trade.
- 37:12For my money, this was a huge upgrade to the Minnesota Wild.
- 37:15It really was look the worst news for them.
- 37:17They still got to get through Dallas and or Colorado, which
- 37:21won't be easy. But are the Wild now a
- 37:23legitimate Cup contender with Quinn Hughes now dawning their?
- 37:28I think Karen has to find a center, though.
- 37:30I think they have a problem there.
- 37:32And the problem is that the best three teams in hockey are
- 37:37probably in the Central. And here's another problem for
- 37:42Minnesota. Not only do you have to beat
- 37:44Dallas and Colorado, which anyone would have to, but as
- 37:47much as I think Ottinger is a phony ace, right, a fake ace.
- 37:51He grew up. He grew up in in Minnesota and
- 37:54he plays good when he goes back home.
- 37:56He sleeps in his childhood bed and he's in front of friends and
- 37:59family. So you got to double whammy
- 38:00there. The News believed in their
- 38:03chance. He had the right to veto the
- 38:05trace. They went to him with the four
- 38:06or five teams and he signed off on it.
- 38:09And he says, you know, Garen sacked up.
- 38:11He was the only guy I think that was a shot at New Jersey that
- 38:13they didn't really make a serious run at him thinking that
- 38:16he just wanted to, you know, play with the brothers in that.
- 38:21To me, if Darren doesn't resign him, then he's all in the next
- 38:25two seasons or this is a bust. I know you can.
- 38:27They sold out all their home games as soon as the trade was
- 38:30announced. The people in Vancouver are
- 38:33suicidal. I mean, I was listening to the
- 38:34podcast and the sports radio. Oh, they just, they're going.
- 38:38I said, you know, just go riot again.
- 38:39It's been 14 years. Good to have another riot.
- 38:43I say that facetious people who don't love people, people who
- 38:48don't love hockey don't understand this.
- 38:50This was the Herschel Wall Walker trade.
- 38:51This doesn't happen at when a kid is 26, it says.
- 38:55It just doesn't happen. So, I mean, Garen swung for the
- 38:58fences. Let's see if it works.
- 39:00I wonder if the emergence of Walstead as as a really good #2
- 39:04played into his hand saying we, you know, we've we've got the
- 39:07team that can get it done. They haven't gotten out of the
- 39:10first round in a decade. So it's a long stretch to go
- 39:13from that to winning a Cup. Fairpoint.
- 39:16Fairpoint. We saw the culmination of the
- 39:19NBA Cup, Adam Silver said. You might be looking around
- 39:22putting this in some college buildings.
- 39:24Vegas didn't work. Is it working the NBA Cup?
- 39:28And in terms of handle much at all?
- 39:32There was action on the there was decent action and there were
- 39:35action on the OKC San Antonio game for sure.
- 39:40And a lot of people lost bet in the future that OKC would win
- 39:42the cup. So that was good for books,
- 39:45right? People thought that was a layup
- 39:47and even money that they were going to win this cup.
- 39:49I don't know. They announced the attendance to
- 39:5117,000, although we had people there and they were, it looked
- 39:54like about half of that. I don't know, I feel that the
- 39:58American fan or the North American fan does not have the
- 40:01soccer mentality where these teams play for all these little
- 40:04cups in their country through the course of the year.
- 40:06And for some of them, it's just as meaningful as winning their
- 40:09league. That that the NBA fan wants to.
- 40:12It's how far your team goes in the NBA playoffs, not what they
- 40:15do in the Cup. The players love the Cup, the
- 40:17fans don't. I don't know if putting this at
- 40:19Rep Arena makes a difference. Yeah, I'm with you, Mike.
- 40:21Paul. Merry Christmas, Mike.
- 40:23I appreciate it. We're off next Friday.
- 40:25I'll reach out to see if you can reschedule.
- 40:27Don't know what your holiday schedule is like.
- 40:29If not, we'll certainly catch you before the new year.
- 40:32Thank you, Mike, for what you do for us and best of luck.
- 40:35Thank you guys. Merry Christmas.
- 40:36Merry Christmas. Good to talk to you, Mike.
