- 0:01Silicon Valley startup Tensor just unveiled a $200,000 luxury
- 0:08electric SUV designed from the ground up to drive itself
- 0:12without anyone behind the wheel. This isn't a Tesla.
- 0:15This is better, actually. The company plans to deliver the
- 0:19first consumer owned Level 4 autonomous vehicle by late 2026,
- 0:25meaning the car handles all the driving in approved zones
- 0:28without human supervision. And Tensor packed this thing
- 0:31with over 100 sensors, 8 NVIDIA processors, and a folding
- 0:36steering wheel that disappears into the dashboard when you're
- 0:39not using it. This thing is like a
- 0:40transformer. But will people be willing to
- 0:44actually trust a machine enough to hand over the keys to a
- 0:48$200,000 investment now? Lyft just reserved hundreds of
- 0:53these robocars for its own fleet, and that deal includes
- 0:56something I haven't seen before. And we're going to cover the
- 1:00hardware that separates this vehicle from anything that Tesla
- 1:03or Waymo offers. Now there's a regulatory maze
- 1:06that Tensor still needs to navigate and why Lyft's purchase
- 1:10could change how we think about owning a car.
- 1:13And we'll get right into that right after this very short
- 1:16break. Now, Tensor's robocar enters a
- 1:20market where no company has sold a Level 4 autonomous vehicle to
- 1:23individual buyers. The startup spent nearly a
- 1:26decade in stealth mode, building proprietary technology after
- 1:31walking away from robotaxi operations in China.
- 1:35Now this thing is a sleek crossover SUV, and it is covered
- 1:41in lidar sensors and cameras. No drivers needed.
- 1:46That's the product that Tensor wants to put in your driveway.
- 1:49Production will be handled by Vietnamese automaker Vinfast at
- 1:53its factory in Haipong, which will deliver them starting in
- 1:59the United Arab Emirates before reaching American customers.
- 2:03Now let's start with the hardware, though.
- 2:05Tensor fitted the Ribbocar with 37 cameras, 5 custom lidar
- 2:09units, 11 radars, 22 microphones, 10 ultrasonic
- 2:14sensors, and 16 collision detectors.
- 2:18That sensor count puts pressure on every competitor, and lighter
- 2:21is the spinning laser system that creates a 3D map of
- 2:24everything around the car. The rooftop unit scans 360° and
- 2:29detects objects nearly 1000 feet away.
- 2:32Cameras mounted underneath the chassis address a blind spot
- 2:35that has caused problems for other autonomous systems, and
- 2:39that is something that I haven't really seen too much of.
- 2:42The primary lighter unit, called Tensor Halo, emits 25.6 million
- 2:47beams per second. That creates what the company
- 2:50describes as a 360 degree safety shield around the vehicle.
- 2:54Four additional blind spot lidars cover areas the main unit
- 2:58cannot reach. 6 Hyper radars detect both stationary and
- 3:02moving objects across all distances using 4D tech imaging
- 3:07for external microphone overlays.
- 3:10Locate emergency vehicle sirens before they become visible so
- 3:13the car can pull over safely without visual confirmation.
- 3:17Most autonomous vehicle developers retrofit existing car
- 3:20platforms with sensors bolted on afterwards, and Tensor designed
- 3:24every surface to optimize sensor placement from the first sketch.
- 3:30Now 8 NVIDIA Dr. EGX 4 chips sit inside what Tensor calls an
- 3:37onboard supercomputer. The system processes over 53
- 3:42gigabits of sensor data per second.
- 3:46For context, that's roughly 1000 times faster than typical home
- 3:50Internet speeds. The AI runs on transformer based
- 3:53models trained on data from expert human drivers.
- 3:57A separate visual language model handles edge cases and
- 4:00unexpected scenarios. And edge cases are the weird
- 4:04situations that normal driving patterns don't prepare you for.
- 4:08If there's construction on the road, maybe there's a cone in
- 4:10the middle of the road and they have to go around it, that's one
- 4:14of those weird situations and maybe the cone is tipped over or
- 4:17maybe there's like some bigger rocks in the road or something,
- 4:21some random stuff in the road. Tensor engineer this
- 4:24supercomputer for 10 years or 180,000 miles of operation.
- 4:29That's really good. Advanced liquid cooling
- 4:32maintains peak performance across extreme temperatures.
- 4:35There is a dual power architecture that's provides
- 4:38full redundancies with multiple power sources ensuring
- 4:41continuous operation, and every computation happens locally on
- 4:46the vehicle. There's no cloud, and Tensor
- 4:49designed the system to work without cloud connectivity,
- 4:52storing all travel data exclusively on the car itself.
- 4:58Now you can upgrade over the cloud, of course, over the air
- 5:02upgrading, that's a thing, and that's going to be happening
- 5:05with the Tensor vehicles. But all the data for your own
- 5:08vehicle never gets shared in the cloud, and owners can disable
- 5:12remote access entirely and control data through an
- 5:15encrypted smartphone app. Physical cameras can be covered
- 5:21and microphones can be switched off, and that can all be done
- 5:25with the app too. Now, I've been digging through

- 6:34Inside there's a folding steering wheel.
- 6:37The dash opens up and the steering wheel retracts into the
- 6:43dash. If you don't want to drive, this
- 6:46thing can drive you anywhere you want.
- 6:48You can ask it to drive you to the store.
- 6:50So if you want to spend a bunch of time shopping, like 2 hours
- 6:54shopping and you live 10 minutes from the store, but you don't
- 6:57want to walk because you have a bunch of bags and you know
- 6:59you're going to be there for a few hours.
- 7:01You don't need your car to sit there for two hours, right?
- 7:04So you send it home, you can say drop me off at the store, I'm
- 7:09going to be there for two hours, pick me up two hours later, go
- 7:13home for now and the car will do it.
- 7:18It's just crazy, right? There's no pedals because they
- 7:21disappear into the foot bed. The center display slides over
- 7:26to face the former driver's seat, which becomes a reclining
- 7:30lounge chair with massage, heating and cooling.
- 7:33If you just want this thing to drive you around and it's going
- 7:37to be luxury all the time, a massage chair in your car and
- 7:43you're just sitting there hanging out.
- 7:45Tensor claims 29 storage compartments fold flat seats for
- 7:50items up to 10 feet long in a dedicated pet mode that lets
- 7:54your vehicles transport animals without you even being there,
- 7:58that's pretty wild. The vehicle targets a luxury
- 8:01crossover segment, though with dimensions matching a full size
- 8:04SUV. A112 kWh battery provides an
- 8:08estimated 250 miles of range. The 845 Volt architecture
- 8:12enables charging from 20 to 80% in roughly 10 minutes at peak
- 8:17power, around 400 kilowatts. That opens up long distance
- 8:21travel in ways current E VS struggle with.
- 8:24Tensor developed compatibility with robotic charging systems
- 8:27from Roxys and Bros, allowing the car to plug itself in
- 8:31without human intervention. Run flat tires.
- 8:34Let the vehicle continue driving up to 45 mph for an hour after a
- 8:39puncture. That gives the autonomous system
- 8:41time to reach a safe location and pull off RGB mini LED
- 8:45display panels on the exterior communicate the vehicle's
- 8:48intentions to pedestrians and cyclists.
- 8:51Coach style doors feature radar based obstacle detection too.
- 8:56You have soft closed motors and they can de ice themselves too.
- 9:01Now we have to talk about Lyft too because remember when I said
- 9:03that in the beginning of this show, Lyft is going to be a
- 9:07partner for this crew here. Lyft's partnership adds a
- 9:13economic base for Tensor. Tensor will ship from Vietnamese
- 9:18manufacturer Vinfast with Lyft's platform pre installed.
- 9:23That changes everything completely.
- 9:25You can deploy your personal vehicle on Lyft's rideshare
- 9:27networks in markets where Level 4 autonomy is permitted.
- 9:31The car earns money while parked in your driveway.
- 9:34You can let it go wild. Say if you're going to the
- 9:37store, you know you're going to be there for two hours.
- 9:40Tell it, hey, shift into lift mode, go get some, go make some
- 9:45money. So whenever you're just doing
- 9:47those two hours of drives, it makes the money back for the
- 9:50things that you buy. So it's a way for you to make
- 9:56residual income. Maybe you'd let your car do the
- 9:59work for you. Remember when Elon Musk said
- 10:01this a while ago, years and years ago, Probably 10 years
- 10:04ago, he would say you could just leave your car in the parking
- 10:09lot all day, right? But with a Tesla, you could let
- 10:13it do a robo taxi for you and Uber people around for you and
- 10:18make money for you while you're at work.
- 10:20You're working for 8 hours. What's your car doing?
- 10:22It's just sitting there in the parking lot doing nothing, not
- 10:25earning you money. So this is that, but before
- 10:29Tesla, right? So Lyft and Tensor together,
- 10:35Lyft just leapfrog Tesla and Tensor, if they actually do
- 10:40this. By the end of 2026, if they ship
- 10:42this and it actually works, Tesla has some major
- 10:46competition. Even though it's a $200,000 car,
- 10:51it is something that Tesla hasn't been able to do yet.
- 10:55Now the car earns money whenever you want it to.
- 10:59You're at work 8 hours? OK, cool, have the car pick you
- 11:02up when you're done at work, drop you off at home, and then
- 11:05go out and earn you more money. That would be amazing.
- 11:09Lyft's fleet management subsidy, Flexdrive, will handle cleaning,
- 11:13charging, and maintenance for owners who participate.
- 11:16So not only do you get this vehicle that's going to make you
- 11:20money, maybe it'll make your money back.
- 11:22Maybe you'll make $200,000 in the first year that you do it
- 11:24because this thing can run 24/7. Who knows how much money you can
- 11:28make. But then Flexdrive, they'll
- 11:31clean it, charge it, and maintain it for you so you don't
- 11:34have to do any of that stuff. A $200,000 car normally
- 11:38depreciates the moment it leaves a lot and sits idle 95% of its
- 11:42life. It doesn't.
- 11:43You don't really do anything with your car.
- 11:44Like right now, my car's in my driveway.
- 11:46It's not doing anything. A robocar generating rideshare
- 11:49income could theoretically offset that decline through
- 11:52productive use. The company reserved hundreds of
- 11:57rebel cars for its fleet. Lyft did through its affiliates,
- 12:01pending regulatory approval. Of course.
- 12:03The marks a big shift for Lyft. Lyft previously focused on
- 12:07facilitating rides through its app or providing fleet
- 12:09management services. It never owned those vehicles.
- 12:13Uber has signed more than a dozen agreements globally with
- 12:15autonomous developers and pledged to deploy at least
- 12:1820,000 Lucid and Neuro Robotaxi starting next year.
- 12:22The Tensor deal gives a lift a vehicle specifically engineered
- 12:26for rideshare duty with sensors designed for a decade of
- 12:30commercial use. So even when you're done with
- 12:34this car, say, if you upgrade to something else and you're just
- 12:36like, you know what, I want to keep this car going so it can do
- 12:39lift for me and I keep earning money with it.
- 12:42Maybe you do that. There's so many options for you
- 12:45now that you can actually do this.
- 12:47Tesla hasn't done this yet. So everybody with a Tesla, and
- 12:50if you aren't able to do this by the end of 2026, Tensor is ahead
- 12:55of Tesla if that's the case. So what do we know about this
- 12:59regulatory path I was talking about earlier?
- 13:01Tensor holds a California DV permit for driverless testing,
- 13:06but has not secured CPUC authorization to deploy vehicles
- 13:10to the public without safety drivers.
- 13:13CPUC is the California Public Utilities Commission, the agency
- 13:17that grants commercial permits for robo taxis.
- 13:20Only Waymo has obtained that permit that limits where Tensor
- 13:24can launch. Initial deliveries will go to
- 13:26the United Arab Emirates in late 2026 or regulatory frameworks
- 13:30differ from the US American deliveries will follow in early
- 13:332027, pending approvals, and the company operates in geofence
- 13:38zones for a fully automated vehicles, allowing manual
- 13:41driving outside of approved areas.
- 13:44So what's next for Tensor? It's a crazy ride already,
- 13:49right? Tensor evolved from Auto XA
- 13:52former MITPHTM Princeton assistant professor, known
- 13:56professionally as Professor X Auto X operated over 1000
- 14:01robotaxis across 5 Chinese cities during the pandemic.
- 14:05That was one of the largest fully driverless fleets globally
- 14:08at that time. The company established
- 14:10manufacturing facilities near Shanghai and maintained
- 14:13operation centers across 65 square miles of Shengzhen.
- 14:17Now, Auto X began testing on public roads in California back
- 14:20in 2017 and secured California's second ever driverless testing
- 14:24permit in 2020. That gives Tensor years of real
- 14:27world data that most competitors lack.
- 14:30Now Auto X fully divested all China operations and
- 14:33discontinued the brand to focus on American, European and Middle
- 14:36Eastern markets. Tensor maintains headquarters in
- 14:38San Jose with satellite offices in Spain, the UAE and Singapore.
- 14:43The company claims ownership and controlled by US employees, with
- 14:46majority investment for the UK, Japan, Korea and the United
- 14:49States. Recent reports indicate Tensor
- 14:52may raise 300 to $400 million in pre IPO funding while working
- 14:56with Royal Bank of Canada, potentially listing on US
- 14:59exchanges by late 2026 or early 2027.
- 15:03Now that funding timeline aligns with vehicle deliveries, giving
- 15:06investors a chance to bet on consumer adoption.
- 15:09Personal autonomous vehicles before Tensor prove that the
- 15:12market actually exists.
