Transcript
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, folks.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: This is Kendrick Music, and we're back for part two of our discussion of the offense in that we know we're the Vikings, 13-3 in Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_01]: Join me.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_01]: Do that as Spencer Peterson against.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: Spencer, how you doing?
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Two in a row, Ken.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for having me.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: appreciate you coming on.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about a lot of interesting things in the first party episode.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: We made a big run through order of entry again and including some new revelations at the wider seaver position where it looks like the lane, western, serrat, totem pole is a lot more clear than it used to be.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about some of the possibility maybe of having finiano on the team as a third quarterback, not a 0% chance, but probably not super high and might make more sense for him to be on the practice squad as a third quarterback.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, he's showing some good stuff.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think some continuation from last week and we'll get into individual player performance is here in a bit.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: But continuing to make a case for himself is potentially being that 25th spot on offense.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: There you go, there you go.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: And the other position that I think was interesting in terms of where the roster might be headed this Sunday is that the running back group where you have two guys and Ali who is now back from an injury as of today at practice,
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: and you have Randall who missed this game due to injury, and I think it's probably less clear than it was if one or both of them might be, sorry, if, yeah, if one or both of them will be on the roster come opening day, it could be both if one is hurt.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, that's indirect competition potentially with what we just mentioned about Finyana of who takes that 25th spot, you know, the Randall injury is a little bit of a curveball combined with the Dolly return in terms of what we thought was maybe a bit of a foregone conclusion about the, about the running back debt chart, particularly for week one.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll get into offensive line, might be another position where they want a 10th guy.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're going to get to 25, you kind of have those choices that are primary ones.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's quarterback three, running back four, offensive line, and 10.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then another possibility right now, we'd have to acknowledge, is the fact that they'll need one more receiver, potentially from outside the organization, to fill the roster at the beginning of the year, hopefully not for longer than that.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: One quick point of clarification, suspension with that and I know I've already validated by Rule of Not getting into it, but a suspension does not clear the roster spot temporarily, doesn't?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think it does for a period of time.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think you can then, you put the player on some sort of suspended list and you get to
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I knew once that many people may not be concerned about, I think those will see if they show probably understand the importance of that edge of the roster, that 53rd and now 54th spot you could be talking about, but definitely an important consideration to think about.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and one thing that we can't forget about is I think this is a year where the Ravens certainly will make use of both additional IRDTR spots.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then perhaps even a handshake spot beyond that, they've used as many as I believe two IRDTRs and two handshakes in one year to extend the roster to 59.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, 57 from from 50 from
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: You know, 55 that you have, if you use two of the guaranteed ones, but I still am of the belief that those two spots were made permanent largely because other teams were kind of sick of the ravens and a couple other teams manipulating the edge of their roster in a way that they thought they should have access to as well.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, there's a bit of a, I think it became such a commonplace, there's a bit of a, let's just make an avenue to making this a completely above board with no wink winks or handshakes needed.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just just formalize and codify it was probably a little bit of what the league office was thinking as well.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: Probably.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, probably.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we went through the order of entry everywhere but the offensive lines.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to start with that.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: We have some offensive lines scoring to go through at the top of the show here.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: But quickly on the offensive line, they rested three players, Stanley, Rosengarten, and Simpson.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: They're not resting either of their setters.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: They're not resting Yohanai, their other starter there.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, there's still a lot of players getting some time in this game.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: the game and left the earliest is the first group I want to talk about and that was win and you want to play next to each other in the middle.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they only played 19 snaps, you know, over four drives at the start of the game.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: So they didn't play a lot, but they at least got a little bit of time together.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think some of that may have had to do with some of the abbreviated snap counts that happened earlier in the game.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the SNAP count picked up as the in the second half of it, uh, wasn't surprised at all by you on a being the first guy out getting the, the, you know, starter treatment all better rookie kind of kind of treatment.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Gwen, I was pleasantly surprised to see you leave at the same time.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: So you have two things going on there.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: Gwen, you thought maybe he needed more run to convince the coaches that he still the number one guy, which he appears to be based on the starting position here.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: Although, mentor has since said today that postsick is going to be running with the ones now.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: That this next week.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think you can sort of squint and kind of see whatever you want that decision actually because the flip side is, you know, when you got the starter treatment in the left early with Ywane, the flip side is, Pinchor got more of a look, which if it's a credible competition, is something that would prove to him.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, you're saying your postsick is going to get more posted.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean it's a pinter on accident or went on accident.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that postsick got more of a look in this game as a result.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and certainly something that they're going to have to look at down the road here is really postsick ready physically to play.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people have said postsick's technique looks okay, but he's got some other problems in terms of obviously what strength he's bringing to the field.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: Let's continue through the rest of it.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about the individual play a little bit.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: I do have scoring for postsick when we get there.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: So then we had three other extended starters.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: And Carson Vincent played another very extended game.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: In this one, Voorhees played for, I think, five or six series.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, five.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: He played all the way to halftime.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: So he's just extended by one more series over Yuanian postsick.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: And then, Lichtenhand, again, played
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: all but the last series this time after playing every single one of 80 snaps in that first week and Lichtenhand had a lot of problems with this one.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't score him, but as you know, three holding calls.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the three holding calls were not a not a great look for him.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: No surprise about Vincent and Voorhees about their order of entry or time in the game really.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, so let's move on.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: We have the extended first replacements.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: The guys who played a lot of time, and were replacements, so those are Jones, Posick, and Bullock.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: So, Emery Jones played, let's see, from the beginning, from the middle of the second quarter, until the middle of the fourth quarter, which is also the period that Posick played.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: So they have a little line continuity going between center and right guard there.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: those two play together with Vories for one series and then he played with Bullock for four more serieses at left guard before he gave way actually he gave way at left guard be moved over to center for the final series.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: So post after Bullock played there as the game at that point.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was pleasantly surprised to see Bullock get so much run.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of makes sense given that I don't know who else would necessarily be the guy to come in at left guard after four years, but still pleasantly surprised to see that including the kick over to center to close out the game.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other two guys we talked about, Jones and Posek, no surprise there.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think Posek,
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: you know, if it's extended look as for a legitimate competition, and I've recently believed it's not a legitimate competition for the number one center job, and then, you know, Emery Jones being kind of when your primary backup's potential six offensive linemen, you know, getting work throughout the game makes a lot of sense.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, so I would agree, no surprises on that.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: The last two drives, we had Diego Pounds in at left tackle for Vincent.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: Diego Pounds looked pretty damn good.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: He certainly had a couple of note blocks.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: He did have one negative play.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: He allowed a past offense when he was not engaged with the blocker on his side.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: So there was a throw over the left sideline.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think it might have been intended for hybner.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it was intended for him there, because it was a past offense by Richter, where he got up, and that's a play where I want to see the left tackle, engaged the stomach of the leaper there, and hopefully get him get his arms down.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, he was in there for two series.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Then we had the last drive only.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: He had Dawkins, barrenson, and sharp.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: David Sharp keeps getting chances with the Baltimore Ravens.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: team Stint, he's had in the NFL.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's now, I think, almost 31 years old, if I recall, but he's been around the NFL forever.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's the Jesse Arrosco of backup left tackles, so just staying around forever.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: Dawkins, a guy who played center, but has seen, you know, a lot of guard play in camp because they have so many extra centers, and he was at left guard in this game.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: and he got a little bit of time here.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of disappointing, frankly, for a seven-thrown pick that he's not pressing some fairly mediocre interior offensive linemen for more plank time.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, that's generally expected drafty, even a seven-thrown pick to get a little bit more run in a pretty given pre-season.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: So that's interesting, I would be intrigued to know what the story kind of ultimately is behind that.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: One guy we mentioned previously, pounds,
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I don't know that there's been too much of an upheaval of our view of this team, but he continues to impress and might be a guy who's making the conversation a little bit interesting for if there is a 10th offensive lineman, who is that person?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that's, I think that's possible.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other conversation that gets more interesting is whether Lichtenann or he is the appropriate guy for the top of practice squad tackle spot.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that pounds because is a, he gives you that left tackle flexibility.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Vincent is a left tackle primarily, and you know, I hate to say can't play right tackle, but is skill set as such that you want to use them at left tackle, a pounds I think could go either spot.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's out if there's, uh, if you're limited to one position, yeah, it should, you know,
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: terrible that it's it's left happily you know it's uh yeah if you can only do one what is it uh he does one trickly does that one trick really well like if you can credibly play left tackle and that's what you're limited to there are worse things yeah they're you're gonna have a long career like date just has to have a chart and right you'll you'll you'll you'll understand what the deal is but uh it there's two guys uh yeah i
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't say this.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't mind even if I knew that all they were ever going to be at good was playing left tackle.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: That would still be my probably my choices for tackles 3 and 4 of organizational depth.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll worry about it later when I have to figure out what the right tackle situation is if you've got Emory Jones.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be probably meh but at least it will be something at right tackle if you had to.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: And if those guys, in fact, would even be better than a pound, say.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it ultimately comes down to offensive tackle, size and shape pools limited.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: But when you get into the difference between NFL left tackle and NFL right tackle, it's size, shape, and feet that lies much rare in length.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's a couple of things you can, you can
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: You can compromise a little bit more at the right tackle spot versus what the left tackle truly is a much rare size and shape pool.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely completely agree.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the order of entry there.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that we learned anything new this week other than the maybe the relativeization of pounds and licked an hand.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: And some of it looked in hand as the girl who grew up next door and you've known all your life, and he's played 130 snaps this preseason, which this familiarity has greeted some contempt in terms of the three holding calls yet this week.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: But the truth of the matter is, probably played as many snaps as just about anybody in the entire NFL.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: I want to check that.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: But I know Vincent did that last year.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: He played like 198 pre-season staffs.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: It was in the top two or three guys in the entire league.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_01]: There might be some guy who played in the Hall of Fame game this year with the extra week that might have played more staffs.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a very, very long pre-season already for Lichtenann.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost seems unfair that, based on having some extra staffs with some extra bad plays, and he's now in trouble against pounds
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, ultimately, they could potentially co-exist.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: I do agree that as we mentioned before, and I think on the previous, got a first part of the show that, it seems like in the relative positioning of them between both their play and the positional value, pounds his surpassed lectern.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a world, particularly with the number of interior guys that they're probably going to carry on the active roster, or the 53-man roster rather, that if there's two spots for the offensive line, that they could co-exist.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: Alrighty, let's move on if we can.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about some individual scoring here because I've got it for three players.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about Vincent, Jones, and Posek.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: We'll save Posek for last.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'll start with Vincent.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk a little bit about it.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: Please jump in with questions at any point.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'll try and leave openings here.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: But I usually go through this pretty quickly as you know.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: He had a difficult game.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it really difficult game with the Minnesota Edges.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: And unfortunately,
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: the place he's been giving up in these last two games have been a lot of pressure.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: And frankly, it's a lot of pressure in a fair number of different ways.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: Some of it's bull pressure, some of it's getting beaten outside.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: He had a field to pick up and outside Russia in this game and it was strange because it looked like he
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: Recognized immediately that Stuart, the outside, the edge on that side was rushing and that many had to be his guy and then he kind of ran after him on that side because he knew there wasn't anybody else, but then by then it's already way too late to do anything about it So just it just looked like you know his conscience got to him about that one Anyway, he ended up giving up both a two-thirds of a sack as I scored it.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: I gave one thirty other side where pets uh didn't have a good block on that play
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I give it two-thirds of the second is last play in the game and the play previous to that he gave up a quarterback hit and that was one of three full quarterback hits he gave up in the game.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, it's very unusual to give up that many full quarterback hits.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: And he also had, I think he allowed up, yeah, he had a lot of past offence, also to Richter at the line of scrimmage where Richter got up high and he didn't go to the belly and pounds would give up one of those later in the game as well.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, not a great game for him.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: He and one block and level two, one pancake didn't pull, didn't have a highlight.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: And his scoring for the game was 0.43 on a raw basis.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: And normally he would get some adjustment to that.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it would have been about 0.03.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: He would have run out of pressure once by Fanyano during the game as well, which would cause him to lose part of his subjective adjustment.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: But it was one of the really strong position that's Vikings had was their outside linebackers that they played in this game.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: That said, every other team in the NFL has outside of life backers that every bit is good is what the Viking exploited this game.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was just a bit pointed to see some of those plays.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not sure if this necessarily was one of the ones you cited.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure it is.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: There was a password snap where the Minnesota Edge defender just sort of ran right by him or ran around him.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't able to get his hands on him.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's the, uh, uh,
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: the danger of trade-based scouting that you mentioned before.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: There's some plays that he puts on tape that look really nice.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's, you know, he mirrors well.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's clearly very athletic and you like to see some of it.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: But like you said, when you actually take the right stats and, you know, there's clearly some negative plays in this game and you stack it all together, you know, you gotta take that new account.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, honestly, it's frustrating, by and for a different way, I mean, I think it thought he had made so much progress and some of the things that we had seen from last year, including the fact that he beat Joe Noteboom out for the Game of Activations at the end of the year.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: We're in indication he'd be further along than this, this preseason.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, we came into this preseason and we heard nothing but work about how what he'd done on the weight realm all off season and how good he's looked and worked with, tray Hendrickson, who was a lot, a lot of times his shadow boxing kind of partner during the unpadded practices and OTAs and he was trying to learn, you know, from that, apparently, you know, doing a pretty good job, at least the way it's
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: But then we get to games and you know, the notion that maybe you should play less snaps because we're able to see to keep them in bubble wrap I have to go exactly the opposite direction and say I think he probably still needs more seasoning here
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, if we get back to our original projection or your original projection or whoever is original projection, it was sort of, you know, can he be the a solid option for 2027?
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think 2026 was was way ahead of schedule.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think we had every reason or probably continue to have every reason to be optimistic that he should be able to contribute and be a, you know,
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I think there was very good reason to be optimistic and accelerate what we saw as his timeline, but I think there's some, you know, it's worth reminding ourselves that I think originally use Pennsylvania as a 2027 option and to not write them off now because we accelerate our expectations.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's, you know, well said.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's the way I would look at it.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: He was about 14 points short of passing in this game.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: Every June's last week got an F, he was about four points short of passing.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: So if you just give you a relative idea, the F range is so broad.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: I have to like explain where people fall within it.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, trouble.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's move on to Emery Jones, though, because I had him scored as well this week.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people interested in him had a lunch pale effort in this game.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: People do really believe still that he could replace John Simpson, but he was part of the only one pressure event.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: He gave up a bull pressure to Williams.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: It was only a half because someone else was getting pressure to the same time.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: That was in quarter three early on that first drive.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: He missed three blocks.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: Two of those were losses at the line of Scrimmage and he's flagged for a fall start, which doesn't seem like too much until you look at the total number snaps.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: He played the only 31 and ends up being just a solid sea for the day there.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, a given adjustment, but, you know, those
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: seemingly fairly small deductions do add up and, you know, just to find a solid game, but not an outstanding game.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if he can continue to stack solid games and it's it's good to hear that it's.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: you don't want those sections, but it's a relatively small deduction that was on a small sample size.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: Now, that's not to say that if you played more snaps that he wouldn't get more deductions and thus keep kind of a similar or worse score.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: But if Emory Jones can kind of continue to build a last year stack solid to maybe more than solid games, I would be happy with that.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, we'd be thrilled if he graded out like a C-plus by my system for the whole year, frankly.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's where Ronnie Stanley and Rose Garton would have scored for last year.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it's not easy to play at that level as when you're a guy getting your first real playing time in the NFL.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, he lost last year developmentally.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: He lost a very significant portion of that
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: the initial NFI, then the I-R-Aing, then coming back and not being able to pass block and all that crap all the way, which basically kept them from being about a half a season before you got to really do any blocking of the type you'd like a rookie to do.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the point you made about, you know, C plus being the level that Riny Sandley was at all year, and we'd be thrilled with that from a guy in his second season.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think two things come
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: the change in offensive line from last year to this year.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: more so even than just the overall kind of grading or where people shake out on in terms of, you know, when you zoom out and look at the aggregate, what I really want to see is minimization of kind of the catastrophic downside.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: Of the seabing, you know, it's one thing if a guy can be solid four out of five plays, but the team is, you know, rotating when they're bad that, you know, fit fall off the table play.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so you're just constantly having someone
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: fail kind of on a rotating basis.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: I would much rather have slightly lower highs and just overall just more kind of mitigation of the down side.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: And then too, when you pair that with guys like Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry who don't need the team to blow them up or open up, you know, massive gaming holes for them to run over the other team, like that's something you can work with.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I want to really get back to your first point for second, which is mitigation of really catastrophic errors.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly what an offensive line needs period, any offensive line.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: They need to minimize the very big painful penalties, which are usually holding calls, but there are other ones too.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: Illegal man down field is a really significant penalty, because it has the option to decline.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_01]: Full start, not as bad.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's a cost to doing business.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: A certain number of full starts is okay over the course of a season.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: I understand that and the other ones obviously are sacks and getting your quarterback hit those two things are the ones You absolutely must minimize don't you don't want contributions to them You don't want the injury risk that comes with them and if you just if you're just working with simple pressures Otherwise well Lauren Jackson is one hell of a quarterback and he's gonna get you out of a lot of Pressure situations in you know in a lot of ways the way hotly did in the first quarter of this game
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: He was running around like a madman getting out of some really dangerous pressure situations.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know some people get frustrated with it of is the team under investing in their offensive line because they know Lamar can bail them out.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's not necessarily what I'm saying.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving him the stability and the platform to make those spectacular plays with, again, at least adequate play.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's he doesn't need the offensive line to give him a perfect pocket every single time, or even if, again, getting back to my example before,
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: If there's a player who could give him a perfect pocket 80% of the time and then just let's through an immediate pressure that immediately gets in his face 20% of the time, that's much worse for Lamar Jackson than someone who dies slowly like Ronnie Stanley often does.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: And just kind of let's let's Lamar then do what is really special in his game.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, completely agree.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, it was a lot of slow deaths by Vincent against Faniano that led to some quarterback hits in this game.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't think should have been quarterback hits.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, literally he was backing up and allowing people to to, you know, hitting Faniano directly.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: And Faniano went down.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: And once I outside the picture, another time, I think Huntley went down.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: when they didn't even credit a quarterback you know, the play in the game ball.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: So they missed it entirely.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: But in both those cases, it was the kind of slow death quarterback hits that don't think would have even been quarterback hits for Lamar Jackson.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: Lamar would have moved somewhere else and not had that contact occur.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I completely with you in terms of minimizing the really bad mistakes that are gonna burn you.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's talk about Ethan Posek because we're kind of burned in daylight here.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: I want to get to this, but Ethan is first his first extended action, played 31 steps, only had two negative events.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: Both of those were shared.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: One, he was bold by orange for half a pressure.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: And that's Dominique Orange, big citrus, who is the victim of Gwyn's block this week during the joint's practice.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: He is a very legitimate
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't say a star, a future star in the league, but he might be, he's a 80 second overall pick for the Vikings.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: I had kind of a lower round tag on him, but I still thought, you know, he's a legitimate talent to can play in the NFL.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, he had one of them, and then,
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: time money I believe is the guy the other defensive line then had half a penetration just move right across his face on a play that got run down for a loss and so that was unfortunate but you know he he got out to level two he made a block or two there one block in fact he missed
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: only one block that was a loss at the line of scrimmage.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I'm not including the pressure and the penetration, those were additional ones, but one that was a zero and that he had a loss of the line of scrimmage.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: I separate those out and post it going ahead of one in this game.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: He had 28 scored snaps, the other we played 31 in total with 25 blocks, ended up at a C, a 0.82, which seems like that's a fairly high score.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: And if you got an 82 on a high school math test, maybe expect that to be a B, but
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: And you need to score a little bit higher than that to be the C range.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: So he was at the bottom of the C range without the adjustment.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: And he was at the top of the C range with the adjustment.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: So that's not a terrible place for Ethan Posick to be at all right now coming back from an injury.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that last point that you mentioned is what I think.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: gives me more positivity to that performance in the sport performance, even though he is a veteran who has played at a pretty significant or positive level, as a starter in the NFL, the coming back from injury that seemed to have been limiting him in his ability to really do what he needs to do on a football field, that he was able to have a solid performance even in a preseason game and do what he did, that is definitely reassuring to me.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's move on, we've done enough on the offensive line here.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the running backs really quickly, because they just, in a lot of ways, they're not doing anything for the Ravens.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the ward had 28 snaps.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: He was a bell cow, 10 carries.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: He had that one target.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: It was actually a pretty nice play for 15 yards on the left side, of, you know, a throwback boot.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_01]: That was a decent play, but I think as long as Carrier the day was six yards, so it wasn't like there was anything impressive about that.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: Ta-ta'll have only carried the ball twice for I believe five yards, McMillan carried it three times for minus one.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Ta-ta'll have it did have a couple of catches, but it was, you know, 4.7 yards, a target or something like a three, three catches he made for 14 totally yards.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: And what struck me a more about the running backs than anything, and I want to hear your thoughts of the specials, none of them can block it inside linebacker.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: So either the Vikings have a great inside linebacker coach, or these three guys, they basically just got to find somebody else who can handle any kind of pass blocking duties if that were to come up.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, I think it's a less and less common skill set for guys coming out of college.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: Otherwise, I would say perhaps that's a guy if you need it shouldn't injury happen, you can go to the street and get maybe there's some guys that are floating around that have played in the NFL and aren't necessarily beating down anyone's door for pass-catching or receiving ability, but luckily, I think the team has two guys who can do this at a decent level on the active roster.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yes, I hope that's true.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I even hope they have a third.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: I hope the Randall becomes a decent pass blocker.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_01]: But his background is that it was as I don't want receivers, so he may well have an aversion to that as we start off.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: But Henry, you'd play him every down if you could for his pass block, but you can't do that.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: Hill has been a good pass blocker at times, so in recent years, he's actually kind of declined in that area a little bit.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: But Jonathan Ward is a six year NFL vet.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: He's supposed to be a guy who, like the Ernest Johnson, who they brought in, you know, is a guy who can handle that kind of duty for a preseason game.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: And they had him out there a ton, that just it seemed like he, you know, they wanted him to be able to do that.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: He just wasn't up to this task.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, ultimately the the only thing I can say about the the day for all three of these guys is yeah, it was fine.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was fine.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's over.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's it.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing I would say I don't need other thing I would say about this group and ward in particular, uh, Prick of risk six round or not six round six year NFL player.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: Um, there was one or two times in, you know, one or two is significant giving you only a 10 carries that I made a note that it seemed like
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: Without having the benefit of knowing exactly what the play call was, based on the way it was blocked up either a lack of decisiveness or seemed like he picked the wrong lane or cut back land that did make the lines run blocking look worse than it might have otherwise been.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Vikings did a really good job of stretching some plays out particularly once they went to the outside, but there was at least one or two instances, and I think there was a goal on Kerry, kind of in that fourth and one conversion, actually.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: We're happy to take, yeah, okay.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it looked like he had a hole, he just did not.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_00]: you know, take the side of the blocker that he needed to do to that, honestly.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: So that play, I have a few discussions with this about Femi, but we both absolutely hate goal line stretch place.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I don't think I'm speaking for Femi, but I believe I'm I'm correctly reporting what he thinks.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: The whole ethical line, the entire defense is compressed.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're going to defend the field in any way, you can defend it horizontally.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: stretch by you're just giving the other team all the time in the world they need to chase down your guys and nobody's too far away.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: So why are you even considering this?
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: I just posted something tonight that basically was a reflection of those discussions with Femi about the scene from Friday night lights where the Permian stops the Dallas team on fourth and inches.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: when they outweigh them by 30 pounds a man.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a whole set up for the things.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: Dallas, that weighs per million by 30 pounds a man and they can't possibly hold up to them physically.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_01]: They've got to be quick and widely and all the other things that the other dog needs to do.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, obviously, the thing to do with that situation is just to go to the line of scrimmage and run whatever form of the Tush push would have been available in those days.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: And you'd have, or even just a regular quarterback sneak, how about that?
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: they don't, they run what appears to be a draw play, you know, giving permit all the time to add and Billy Bob Thornton, you know, in the in the fricking sideline discussion is saying we're going to run a Texas stunt actually said, not a Texas twist, but it's a twist play designed to get their superstar edge player through the A gap.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: how long do you think you have here?
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think you have 10 minutes to get in the back field with some sort of stunt play when they have 4th of inches?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and unfortunately the lollipop second coach on the other sideline made it easy for them, but it's just it's not a well choreographed play.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: Terrible football, you know, in a very good movie, anyway.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's me.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: I can't help myself.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, you have more time when you have a movie slow motion to close the gap up and get there, right?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like that.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we're trying to do.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I posted it out there.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: Go take a look at it guys.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't, if you, I want to hear if you agree with me about the, about the terrible choice of play by both sides in that case.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: Not too much in terms of exotic looks in the game on the offense, there's certainly not doing any on the defense, but it's pretty in between 1.44 and 1.50 titans per play, all games.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: They've been one, you know, four minus that in terms of the wider severs per play, and they've had exactly one running back on the field for every single offensive play.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: So they haven't given any kind of a deck of noils, not given anything away to this
- 33:10[SPEAKER_00]: yeah i mean it's a combination of not giving anything away and i think there's a little bit it's been said before but just in some ways when this is about evaluation and seeing how certain players perform going as you know line your guys up see other perform kind of man vs man not with the benefit of of too much scheme that that gives them an advantage that you would absolutely want in the regular season
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so this is not a coach on coach scheme test.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: It is a player on player quality of play test or a evaluation test.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: And not just across sides of the field.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: Within your own roster, you don't necessarily want to say, hey, we really scheme something up for player A.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: And that necessarily puts them at a player B in terms of our evaluation.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: As a very, very astute point, is that you want to really give fairly similar chances to your players on your roster.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right, the support where we'll talk about some individual players that we have talked about a lot of them already, but we have time to talk about more suspense or who that we haven't hit on so far, would you like to talk about their play?
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we'll start with one guy that we briefly mentioned, but just
- 34:18[SPEAKER_00]: something I forgot to mention about him.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: On the offensive line pounds, one thing I like to see, there was a nastiness to him that I think we didn't talk about it again.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: This gets a little bit to trade-based scouting, but there's one or two plays where I saw him or anyone could see him.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_00]: Take his man 20 yards down field and really play to the whistle.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_00]: That was something that was pretty cool to see.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was nice.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he was downfield on a that 15 yard throwback to Ward, and he made the key block on that.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: And he got into level two.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: And first of all, big guy, kind of slow afoot.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's definitely, I mean, I guess pounds,
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: being a left tackle, your expected feet to be better, but anybody, any left tackle, and to get on level two, is going to look like Frankenstein relative to the other players there.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: And he didn't get super lunge on the play, lined the guy up, and he knocked him into left field, and then word used that block well to get 15 yards on that play.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: So that was nice, and that was the drive, of course, that they tried all those times to get into the goal across the goal line and they couldn't do it, but they ended up getting a field goal, these do that drive.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'll stay on the offensive line.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about Jared Lichtenhand a little bit because I think it is a little unfair the way the way he's been treated, but he did have three holding calls in this game.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: They're all on run plays.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: It just makes you not ever want to run a run play to that side.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: A portion of that can be coached up, but there's something fundamentally not right about Jared to lick the hand in terms of his positioning on the red block.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: This probably forcing him to want the whole of those blocks and to not let loose on them.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: But you've got to be willing to let your guy make the tackle, particularly on a running back outside and you've got to just have eyes in the back of your head to a certain degree in terms of where that running back is because when he crosses you, that's when the holding
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it's the only thing I know we've been on them a little bit here.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple instances where
- 36:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know, in most guys are gonna be smaller men than him, but you know, seemingly smaller men across from him.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I think you put it well that it might have something to do with his positioning, because it does almost seems like he jumps out of the way of the guy in a couple cases.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_00]: The guy gets around him and he holds him.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: It actually looks kind of strange.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think your diagnosis is right that he's doing something to try to get in the right position, and it's just not working out.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so if you're a typical offensive lineman, your hand placement is good.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: You're on the inside of the arms of your opponent.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: And you're trying to go to the chess plate in a few different ways to grab Jersey and hold that guy for normal past blocking reps.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then power was talking to this show about he used to go with his left arm to the neck of the player and then use his other arm for control and pushing and the power he would need to do that uses right arm for that.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: Well, obviously once the guy gets outside of your frame, then you're at risk of holdings.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: You got to also know very critically with that window let go anyway.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Enough about Lichtenhand.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: Who's your next guy?
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go with Josh Davis.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: He had a really nice breakout game after, I think he just had one catch for, you know, a kind of moderate game last week and hasn't really, you know, at least from reports, I haven't been a camp, but at least from reports hasn't really stood out a ton of camp, you know, today you just had a couple plays that were really nice.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I thought they were good in their complimentary place.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_01]: So the first one, he was the, um, okay.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was that the edge player on that side might have been a corner on the place.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_01]: It was number 37, I believe he wasn't fooled.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: He came downhill on Huntley on that fourth drive and Huntley was left with only the decision to go to Qu Davis, who was the underneath player, the first level player on the boot.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: And,
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: Fortunately, he had it, and he had a lot of room to run, and he knew just what to do with it.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: He made a path for himself, and then he built up enough momentum that the first guy couldn't take him down very easily, and he dragged him for a few yards additionally.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: So, really nice jack play there on the first one of Quavus.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get back to one more he made that was earlier than that, but the
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: the 17 yard play he had.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: He was actually down the field of good distance.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd like to see a little bit of both.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see some good yak from approximately the line of scrimmage because hey, he's going to be in some boot place in his career.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be the guy who has to kind of ship that end and then move out in the in the
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: zero yards from the line of scrimmage basically to catch that ball at the first of three levels.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: But I like also to see when he get behind between level two and level three.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_01]: He had one of those in this game as well, so that's a nice sit down and zone play.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then he also, this was maybe even more important, this was early in the game.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: We had a huntly being chased right in the end zone from the offensive left side, so somebody of beaten, I think.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think they'd beaten Vincent on the play, I have to go back and look at who had done it, but he was chasing a hunkly across the end zone of the right and hunkly needed to target.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't need a completion.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: He needed to, he needed somebody to ground the ball at his feet, and Quavus came back and presented himself in a way that hunkly could get that ball grounded and not have it be flagged, which, of course, if it had happened in the end zone, it's a safety.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: If you'd caught, it's a safety.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it didn't really look like he was going to get out of the end zone the way he was being tracked down.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to cheat a little bit and talk about, uh,
- 39:43[SPEAKER_00]: Hotly as it pertains to Quayless on the plays that you mentioned on the first catch that Quayless had I think as you as you alluded to Hotly didn't have the the perfectly clean opportunity but you know as a result he put that ball a little bit behind Quayless I really like Tech Quayless was able to adjust his body and catch that and turn it up field you know very quick turn up You know didn't lose momentum kept going up the field didn't immediately followed the ground anything like that
- 40:13[SPEAKER_00]: Then the next ball you talked about the 17-yard or that one I think was even a bigger testament to Tantley's play So Quabas had a jump and adjusts to the ball a little bit But that was because Hotley was able to drop it right in between level two and three and so he wasn't necessarily able to make it You know this kind of long pass that Quabas could run under But he dropped it so nicely in between the levels of the defense that You know Quabas made the turning cash, but again testament to it was a really good throw by only up and down throw.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'll talk about Walker really briefly.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: He might be my last guy.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've been really pleased with how Walker has played this camp, but what they see me doing this preseason games is trying to make sure that he is
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: in position to make some plays that he's coming back towards the football as opposed to going deep.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: They really haven't had him run a deep route in this preseason so far.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: And they had him run a deep route.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: He hasn't got the football deep.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: in camp that he's been underthrowed so consistently on those routes it's just it's got to be madening to him but the but the in terms of the you know the places doing he's doing some some things that need to be important complementary route concepts for for his vertical value is coming back and and crossing on these digs in the deep middle.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah no he had he looked really good out there I think as we mentioned before I think
- 41:46[SPEAKER_00]: The wider Steven Debtard has made itself clear, but I think he's cleanly and maybe that fourth spot and seems to have the trust of, we don't obviously don't see him with Lamar out there, but he definitely seems to have carved out a role and have the trust of teammates.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: In practice, he's certainly played with Lamar plenty.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: So that's not really the problem.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure both he and Lane want to play with Lamar and it looks like Lane is gonna get his way come to the start of the regular season from what I can tell.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_01]: But definitely, you know, he's still very much in the mix.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing I didn't mention about Walker's 27 yard catch was it was 18 plus nine and he actually made a guy missed the tackle after the catch, which is really nice.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: You want to see that from Walker.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's a big enough physical guy that if he can not only, you know, make people miss with slipperyness, this was a power miss and it was really nice to see him, even though it's a corner back, you know, be able to basically shake him.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we'll take a break and we'll come right back.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Spencer, wanted to talk a little bit about some of the coaching things we saw in this game.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: I just wanted to ask you, was there anything you saw for an individual coach that was kind of, you know, me either what you expected or maybe something you didn't expect from this game?
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I didn't expect this to be my reaction, but I think it generally tracks with what we would have expected to see.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not an individual play call, but rather what we saw from the offensive line.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: Particularly, I think the play that illustrates it best, but it came up a few times, was the throwback toward for the 15 yards.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't believe that was a design screen.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: It looked like Humbly was looking at other options
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: But what I saw on that play was the offensive line hanging out, you know, playing their assignments at the line of scrimmage, they realized that word caught the ball was going up field.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: And immediately there was something that clicked and you saw everyone start running up field to get to blocks.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: It just was a very, you know, clean, what disciplined, well coach looking offensive line.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think you saw that in a few other plays, you know, they did throw a few actual screens out there during this game, but just really clean kind of something that's been
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: just really clean attention to detail on, you know, when the quarterback is still holding the ball, when it gets out and when it's time to go up.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought we saw some good and bad in this game on that, but let me start with the point you're making because I think one of the things you're seeing is this very clean coaching in terms of not having your guys cheat and go up field to early because that can get you to big trouble.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_01]: Those penalties are very costly.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: The Vikings had one in this game, but an idea of idea flag is something you definitely want to avoid.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think there was they were good at that.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think there are two things about the offensive line that I thought weren't great in this game.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: One was, Voorhees did not get ahead of a screen block with at all the rapidity needed.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_01]: And he ended up getting pushed in the back by the running back to try and, you know, get him to push more.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm forget if that was Taut Oliver.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think it had to be because I don't think it was Ward on that play.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: And Ward only had one reception.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: So that'd be Taut Oliver.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a, you know, I had to be a frustrating play for him because for he's just got to get up feel quicker and and make a block.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I remember that one clearly.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think it looked like Taut Oliver.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think the broadcasts even commented on this would have had quite a bit of room to go.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't want to speak too much out of both sides of my mouth, but I see that one is almost a little bit more of an individual.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: specific play, break down versus what seemed like a more broad across the board, job by the team and just awareness of where they are in the field and when they need to get moving.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: OK, I'm with you on that and I think that it is, if you're going to train your linemen to be a certain way and they don't all have eyes in the back of their head, some are like Wayne Gretzky in that way and that they can really tell what's going on, you know, be nice, they ought to design some sort of glove.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: for a player that has a mirror on it, that you can actually just hold up like this and like you're ready to block and then show that you know you can you can see where the running back is relative to you might help on holding calls too by the way, might don't produce those.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I got a sill this thing before I tell everybody.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: On the rapidity of getting ahead of a screen pass there was a play you want to had early in the game that I was actually quite impressed by his how far out he got ahead of the
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'll see this.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: I thought the line was a lot more physical in the first game.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_01]: They had a bunch more pancakes.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of it was Gwen, frankly, because he had a bunch of pancakes in the first game and six level two blocks.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't on the move in this game very much.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't do a lot of polling.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: And when they did do polling, sometimes I had past plays.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: So they had Jones, not Jones.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: They had Bullock.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: Pull at least once on a pass by I recall.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_01]: But you know,
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: between them.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: So that's unusual, but it's indicative of a team that is, you know, maybe working on their zone blocking a little bit more and they don't, you know, have those same number of opportunities to pull.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't like completely abandoning power concepts, but on the other hand, you know, I like to see that when they do, I might want to see and be very physical.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, I didn't feel of this game and maybe it's the zone blocking that the ravens were particularly physical and good finishers getting people to the ground.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have to agree with that for the most part.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_01]: I thought one more from the beginning of the show that we talked about a little bit was I don't did not feel the imprint of
- 47:37[SPEAKER_01]: Mentors fourth down decision making aggressiveness.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we got a good read on that.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: And we kind of talked about it in the first episode.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we need to talk about it a lot more, but I think there are lots of reasons why or a couple of reasons at least why he might be just saying you're you got to wait to find out.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not telling you now kind of thing.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no I without rehashing the whole discussion.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 48:00[SPEAKER_00]: There's a little bit of, you know, not wanting to tip his hand, but also a bit of, you had guys like Eccle, you had some other guys that are fighting to make this team and a lot of the ways that they're gonna do it is with special teams that you wanna give those guys a chance as well.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_00]: It might not be the best result, even if it's what you would really do on Game Day, which has a zero-punt kind of day.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_00]: right okay right you so they and they had these six opportunities or five of them actually to go one fourth and one or fourth and two and they didn't they only think one of them and and I'm kind of the fact this is not like a a Lamar Jackson lead offense where you do have some credible days where you know I think even said or nearly set the record for the fewest punts in a season yeah but was that 2019
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: to go a whole day without punting.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: They clearly had opportunities to practice the pun.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: The pun formation this week, but as an overriding principle, kind of going in, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: And part of me is hopeful, but also it would stand a reason if mentor kind of had a set of heuristics or design principles for the game plan that, you know, in those situations, they probably would just go conservative.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to cut you off.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you got one more coaching thing to go through, but otherwise we'll go to the mail bag if we are in a position to do so.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's go forward to the mail bag.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: So the first question is really a comment mostly.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is from Andrew and he says, hey, can't watching Vega.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: You want it.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like he mainly struggles when there's any kind of confusion or lack of certainty on who is man is to block either due to a stunt or something similar.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: Blitz would be the other thing that would come with that he's if he's got a straightforward assignment He is solid is this common for young linemen something you'd expect he'd improve is Gonna use play in the NFL.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take my crack at this first.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: I want to get your thoughts on this too But I'd say yes, it's very common for you to get better at some of the more complex things about offensive line play And one of the most complex things is handling stunts
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: tweets, blitzes, and simulated pressure, and those are the ways that you can, you know, the elements of deception that are intended to confuse offensive linemen.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think they do a much better job against young linemen, and I would agree.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: He's neutralizes some of his positive physicality to play games with him.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would agree with that, and I think the only other thing I would add is that
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the Vikings did more, you know, elements of deception, more stunts, more twists, things like that in this game.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think then we would have generally expected, and the Ravens, as you mentioned before, weren't on the move much as a line, so that there's things they could do to potentially change up what they're doing, you know, to block the defenders, and if you're just lining up straight every time, and your opponent's not, it's gonna be a little more difficult, but I personally did not see anything that would be overly concerning about the outlook for you on it.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, we'll move on to Mr. Rare of 55 who said, what do we think about Fanyano?
- 50:59[SPEAKER_01]: I really hope he makes this team.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_01]: He gets to his reads quickly and delivers a catchable ball.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think we need a better passing QB behind Lamar for this style of offense.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay, let's start with some of the assertions he's making.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: He makes his reads quickly and delivers a catchable.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think what's been really special about Fagnano so far in this preseason has been how he stood and get in against the hit.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: He's he's delivered a ball very well even when he's about to get hit.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_01]: I've been very impressed by that about it.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's actually an, and, and.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't get the chance to make this comment earlier, but one of the most impressive plays in my mind that Fernando made in this game was, I think it was to kill oray for 13 yards in the fourth quarter.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: There was, they ran a boot and he went up to the right and I think it was a linebacker, but on the backside of the run or the fake run.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_00]: did not, you know, show any respect for the fake hand-off and came right up up the field at Finiano.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: He kind of stopped his boot, you know, planted his feet and fired his strikes, gillery, which was really impressive.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_01]: And good, good, the gillery presented himself on time there, too, to, to make that play.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_01]: What about the other part of this thing?
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: Are we, are you more comfortable having the second quarterback on the team?
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: The guy you're actually going to go to?
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: for an extended number of games.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_01]: Are you more comfortable with him being more like Lamar, so more like say a title or Huntley, even though obviously not Lamar, or are you more comfortable with him being a guy who is probably a better pocket presence, better pocket pass or better standing in his pressure, which might be funyata?
- 52:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would kind of push back against the premise a little bit that Huntley is even that much like Lamar, even stylistically, even if he's not Lamar.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think there was things that Huntley did in this game, you know, when he's when he's running around for his life and in providing that's not his game.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you think back to the Green Bay game last week and when he found success in this game, it's when he can take, you know, quick drops, you know, get in rhythm, throw to his kind of first or second read.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a guy that I really love the idea of running around too much and improvising.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the first thing, as I would say, I wouldn't even say he's that stylistically like Lamar, although he does have pretty good trackspeed and can move once he gets into the space.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: I am of the mind that I think the more important thing here is a guy who's, you know,
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: been in the NFL for a while, kind of knows how to play in this game.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's not gonna be rattled.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I just am not ready to hand the reins over the back of quarterback to a draft of free agent as much as I've liked where I've seen out of Fanyana at this point.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: Fair enough.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely get more game management out of Huntley.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on to Jeremy Banks.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_01]: He says, watching Gwynn and Posek, the one clear difference is strength when they hit guys.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like Posek is blocking guys, but Gwynn is moving guys if that makes sense.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it does after watching that first game certainly, or is Gwynn heavy-handed, but Posek is not...
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: There's probably a couple different things going on here.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: One is that postsick does not seem to be entirely back from his injuries.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: If you know about pitchers and leg injuries, you know, pitchers throw with their legs and they need to have strong legs and you do a lot of running in order to pitch well.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the saddest things is people who never learned to throw with their legs and what that looks like.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_01]: I never fully learned to throw with my legs to throw a baseball that way.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I always felt bad about that, but you definitely see that a lot of outfielders who can't throw these days, like Simpson, the left fielder for the race, right?
- 54:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so he's fast guy, but he just came through with his legs and he's no idea where the ball's going and there's nothing on it and you know, it's just it's it looks terrible.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: So anyways, it's uh, I think the right now that's what we're seeing from postsic is that we don't have a guy with the legs strength yet to drive.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: the way he would normally and has for most of his career.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully we'll see more movement from that.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_01]: And with Gwen, I don't even know what to tell you, because it's completely unexpected, largely because I had no experience with Gwen before the game against the Eagles.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then he turned in one of the best performances at Center, I've seen in years.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, impressive.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the one thing I'd say about poster, I think it's clear, as you mentioned, and we mentioned earlier, that he's not fully back, but it's encouraging to see how effective he was able to be, despite not being fully back.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: And there was a couple of, and I don't have the eye for scoring offensive line like you do, Ken, but, you know, I'm watching a couple of the plays, and at first I was finding myself not being particularly impressed by what poster was doing in terms of moving his man.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but then rewatching it, you know, there's quite a few of those
- 55:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably important not to get too enamored with style points or how the block looks versus is it effective?
- 55:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there was plenty of those exact same plays where I went back and, you know, washed it a couple times.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, sure enough, he's moving his man down the line, he's sliding him down, the man is not making a play, not getting in the hole like, it was effective.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not gonna, I don't wanna penalize him too much for not being the prettiest or, you know, most physically imposing thing you've seen.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would agree with that and he's much more of a positional player with ten years in the league and whatnot.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's true of a lot of players by the way that they give up on a component of their physical play and they become more of a positional blocker and I think that probably was his game.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: more than not his whole career.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he was ever really a, you know, a earth mover.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like you want to is and like wind up here to be in that game against the Eagles.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's just a, you know, he's more of a more going to be more of a tactician and more of a a positional guy.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_01]: All right, one more question here.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: This is interesting because our man Ali has said these doctor Ali apparently said, hi, can't pick fan of the podcast.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's been keeping me connected to Ravens since moving from Maryland to Bhutan on the other side of the world.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now,
- 57:05[SPEAKER_01]: More than I actually have been to Bhutan, and it is a very, very strange country.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to talk about this briefly, but oftentimes, you go to Bhutan because you want to see Mount Everest.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: Mount Everest is actually on the Nepal border, but you fly from Kathmandu to Bhutan,
- 57:23[SPEAKER_01]: and back and you could see Mount Everest outside of the play, the plane on each trip back and forth and it's just a great view.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's up all the clouds and you can get a picture of it, no, that's anybody.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: Bhutan has only like 300,000 people in it.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: So in South Asia, every other country is very densely populated.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: Bhutan is this gorgeous garden of a country that's all up in the mountains and drive anywhere you drive up and down mountains forever.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_01]: You spend
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: six hours in a car probably to drive 20 miles a lot at the time.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: To any way, beautiful country, we really enjoy being there and I'd highly recommend it as a trip for anyone.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_01]: But it's the other thing is, if you have any aversion to phallic symbols and actual phalluses being generally all over the place, it's probably not the country for you.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: Because the country is literally decked out, decked out, yeah, that's the question.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_01]: in mid-century penis and a lot of the places they take you as tourists are to buy various phallic instruments so you have that.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, a beautiful country and they've really taken a lot of time to make it all the roofs of the same and everything so you're not allowed to have a different roof from the other people in the city.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_01]: So it could succeed with what that all to look the same and they have a happiness index that is one of their central figures in terms of the success of their government, which is an interesting way to do things, have a social experiment.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_01]: But great country, if you ever have a chance to visit it.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, Dr. Alley says, I always enjoy your 53-man roster predictions at Dept.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_01]: Short Breakdowns.
- 58:50[SPEAKER_01]: Would you consider doing an episode where you and your guests lay out not what you think will happen, but what you think should happen,
- 58:57[SPEAKER_01]: your ideal raster, depth shard, and prescribes our practice squad of Hickebines from top to bottom.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: I know you touched on this weekly, but a single structured episode would be a lot of fun.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say this for starters, and Spencer, maybe you can address this, too, is that I think for us to say that what the raster ought to be, and we know better than Eric DeCosta, of course.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_01]: And so I don't know what Eric's going to do.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_01]: I can guess what Eric's going to do, but I know what I do, and what should be done, right?
- 59:25[SPEAKER_01]: I, there are some fans certainly who have that viewpoint.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's not me.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens don't make up much of stupid decisions.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: They make decisions for generally very, very good reasons.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_01]: And we just may not know all the particulars that go into that.
- 59:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, fully agreed.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think the only caveat I would add is that, you know,
- 59:44[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't say it's, this is not me arguing for why I feel in a position to say what the ask roster should be over EDC.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_00]: I think there are times and I know this has come up with you last year on the decision of how many defensive linemen to carry of, you know, philosophically this is my thought about what the, uh,
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_00]: the roster compositions should be, but particularly when it then gets down to individual players at the margin, as you mentioned, I just don't feel like I have the intel or insight to say what it should be.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_01]: We can play along just like everybody else, but I would not say, I'm not in a position why it would substitute my judgment for Eric DeCostas, particularly with the information gap that there is in terms of us understanding what's going on with individual players, injuries, and current statement situation, whatever that is.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_00]: And that's completely fair too, because it isn't to be clear.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's not even just, oh, well, they should take, I think they should keep ten offensive
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_00]: And then the individual player decision being do I keep Ali or Randall or whoever, there is also cross-positional, maybe you have to take nine offensive linemen because of this injury at this other position that we made, if you may not be privy to, or eluming suspension or whatever it may be, so that's a good point.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_01]: Dr. Ali, this is thanks for all the great content.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_01]: He says, PS, my wife makes fun of me whenever she hears one of your tropes like size and shape pick.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I know, I'm about to cry, but that's fine.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Dr. Ali.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_01]: We really appreciate your question.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_01]: And we appreciate all your questions.
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_01]: Please use film study, Bailbag at gmail.com for those.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_01]: My wife does a wonderful job now of organizing those.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll make sure we get to them on a weekly basis.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_01]: Let's finish off with the offensive MVP's for this game.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_01]: You're the guest who's your number three guy on offense.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: So number three guy on offense and I'll start this off by saying this is a combination of what would be a traditional game MVP but also a little bit of what did I see more than I expected from someone to give it it is the preseason.
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, my number three is western.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_00]: I, uh, you know, there was the bad drop, which I think we talked about in detail, but he's also the only player in the game to get on the board with the touchdown.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_00]: Also, you know, volume volume based pick here in terms of receptions, but was was happy to see him get involved in the offense.
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, I can understand that my number three guy, and it's was very hard to find guys, but there were a couple.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_01]: I had about three honorable mentions that are in the article, but my number three guys, exactly.
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was enormous to making sure that the ravens avoided the kind of disasters on some of those early drives.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_01]: He rooted them out with some of those punts.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_01]: He had four punts of 59 or 60 yards exactly at five of 54 or more, and his last punt was 40 didn't allow a whole bunch of return yards.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_01]: So he's my number three guy.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_00]: Great, so on to my number two.
- 1:02:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_00]: So my number two was Faniano.
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked what I saw from the young quarterback.
- 1:02:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not ready to say he shouldn't necessarily make the 53, but some of the plays we talked about before the long past of Walker, the past of Hillary, in the face of pressure, really liked what I saw from him.
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_01]: can't argue with that.
- 1:03:02[SPEAKER_01]: He certainly had a good game.
- 1:03:04[SPEAKER_01]: He was about four yards under expectation, four or five yards under expectation for the pressure situation.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_01]: He actually got a much better pressure opportunity set than Huntley did.
- 1:03:14[SPEAKER_01]: Huntley had a terrible opportunity set that was largely disguised.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: And as it turned up, by the way, the passes he threw
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: You only had one pressure in the game, and one ATS and six ball-ock quicks, but the totally misrepresent what actually happened because the passes he didn't get off, the ones that turned into scrambles are where he really saved the Ravens.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_01]: So that was about another five or six pressures in there where he had to do something else with the football and Huntley is my never-to-guy.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_01]: He finished about 1.9 yards per play, better,
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_01]: than his expectation for his opportunity set, which was, you know, a really nice job, but I think you know, is play easily can be overlooked.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he gets downgraded a little bit by my caveat that I started off with in terms of it being the preseason who I, you know, was pleasantly surprised or saw more than I was expecting from.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's fair enough.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's who we might grading system works, the scoring system works during the preseason.
- 1:04:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I could understand that completely.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_01]: Who's your number one?
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think combination of impact on the field was really, you know, the main, the main stir that's, uh, straw that started the drink, and I was tripping over my words there, on the drive that he had this too long one catches on, uh, but just looked really good, combined with the fact that, you know, we hadn't really seen this from him previously, uh, and he did come up in his more of a, you know, a blocking type prospect, particularly seeing him make that catching between level two and level three, kind of on the, uh, corner route that he was running there.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree and I think we really needed to see that and we got a week at a Hibner that was really good.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: We got a week out of Quivis that was really good.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_01]: Hibner got two targets that weren't even targets in this game.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_01]: So one got knocked down at the line of scrimmage and the other one was way behind him kind of hit the three yard line when he was at the one and he goes also reaching back for the ball.
- 1:05:01[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, wasn't even a legitimate target way outside his frame.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's lucky he dropped it because he just hit a lost ground to the three yard line if he had.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_01]: Good stuff, and I think we can live with either set of NBPs, appreciate you coming on Spencer.
