- 2:24here and after an 18 year amazing career with
- 2:28Disney, she has made the move into a full time
- 2:31real estate professional and she's going to share
- 2:33with us some of her story and then just talk
- 2:36about what it's like to have that real estate
- 2:38side hustle while you're still working because
- 2:40I think we've all been there. So Kelly, I'm going
- 2:42to turn it over to you if you want to give us
- 2:43a little bit about yourself and then we can get
- 2:45started. Absolutely. So I'm so excited to be
- 2:48here. Hey, everyone. I, as you mentioned, I spent
- 2:5218 years working at the Walt Disney Company.
- 2:56And like so many of you and what society tells
- 2:59us, I grew up being told I needed to go to college,
- 3:01get a good job, work, save, invest until I was
- 3:0555, 65 in order to be able to retire in about
- 3:08halfway through my corporate career, I realized
- 3:10that doing the corporate grind no longer fueled
- 3:13me. So I really made the pivot, dove deep into
- 3:17understanding what my future life, what I wanted
- 3:19my future life to look like. And that's what
- 3:22then led to real estate. And I've spent the last
- 3:25seven years investing in real estate and getting
- 3:28to the point where I could retire early at the
- 3:30age of 40 from the Walt Disney Company. That's
- 3:33awesome. Yeah, I was not 40. I left my full -time
- 3:38job in formally in 2020. And let's see, I'm 46
- 3:43now. So what does that do for me? I was like
- 3:4742, 43. That's still pretty impressive though.
- 3:50Let's be honest. Well, and I guess my husband
- 3:53got the same thing. Cause he's a little bit younger
- 3:54than me. His last day was June of this past summer.
- 4:00So we're both full -time in this now and it's
- 4:04wow. Yeah. That's awesome. It's been about a
- 4:08month for me that I have not had the nine to
- 4:10five grind. And so I'm still very much, excuse
- 4:12me, adjusting and transitioning. But so far,
- 4:16I mean, I've been amazed at, I've been able to
- 4:18have breakfast with my mom without taking vacation
- 4:20time and without worrying about getting back
- 4:23to the office for meeting or chaperoning my children's
- 4:26field trip or signing up to volunteer at their
- 4:29school. and so I've just been able to already
- 4:32just in a short period of time see some of those
- 4:34benefits and really have a more well -rounded
- 4:36life and fulfillment from you know the people
- 4:39that I love. Yeah I know and we're um it's like
- 4:43we're gonna be in Salt Lake City in March. because
- 4:46I've got a crazy march. So the summit is March
- 4:5023rd, 24th, 25th. That's the days that you're
- 4:52here. Well, in the weeks prior, we have been
- 4:55doing a ton of stuff. We've spent time in Salt
- 4:57Lake City at best ever. Then my kids have spring
- 5:00break, but we just pulled them from school. So
- 5:04if there's any school officials watching, sorry
- 5:06about that. But with all of our natives having
- 5:11left, our choice was to bring them with us. And
- 5:15they're gonna get so many life experiences from
- 5:17that too. Well, yeah, and it worked out really
- 5:21cool because the person who's Airbnb I'm staying
- 5:23at has a 22 year old daughter, not in school,
- 5:27not working, and got to be a second set of eyes
- 5:31and hands for my own kiddos since they were in
- 5:35the Airbnb all day because we were at a conference.
- 5:38But we have the ability to, as we're coming back,
- 5:42stop wherever we want. There's no real tie there.
- 5:46And so that's gonna be really nice. And then
- 5:48in April, I'm actually gonna be a chaperone for
- 5:51the grand Tetons trip. So there's a whole week
- 5:54of April that the high schoolers, I think high
- 5:57school plus eighth grade at their school is gonna
- 5:59go on this trip. And I get to go and not have
- 6:02to worry about job responsibilities. I still
- 6:06teach college. I do it online and I do some scoring
- 6:10for ETS here and there, but it's all online.
- 6:13So there's there's a lot of freedom there. That's
- 6:16amazing. Yeah, it's pretty awesome. So it's been
- 6:22cool too, because now that Jason is Jason is
- 6:25no longer really tied to a WG still doing the
- 6:26consulting gig. But when stuff happens at school,
- 6:30we can just go like there's a coffee next Wednesday
- 6:32at 8 AM. And as much as I am not a morning person,
- 6:36I'll be there for that. Unhappily, but I'll be
- 6:39there. And so it's mostly it's because of the
- 6:42tuition increase, but we just want to have our
- 6:45voices heard because three kids at the tuition
- 6:48increase is like paying for college. Yeah, I
- 6:52can only imagine. I'm very fortunate that where
- 6:54we live, we have good public schools. So our
- 6:56children are in the public school system. I appreciate
- 6:59that. Well, having been a public school teacher,
- 7:04it was. I just wanted it's a STEM school, and
- 7:08I think it's a really good place for our kids
- 7:09to be because were very different. And one of
- 7:14the things that I didn't like was watching them
- 7:17not really crush. Well, yeah, kind of crush her
- 7:21spirit, my oldest. And I didn't want to see that
- 7:24happen to her. And at this school, they don't
- 7:26do that at all. They let kids be entrepreneurs.
- 7:30Kids run businesses. Kids like get to have crazy
- 7:33hair, Julianne. Half her head is shaved. Well,
- 7:34not really shaved. It's like one guarded. And
- 7:36the other half is like. thicker than all of my
- 7:38hair combined. She got my hair from when I was
- 7:41younger, but I had kids and it all fell out and
- 7:43it hasn't grown back. I think that's an interesting
- 7:48thing that, you know, you mentioned. I'll be
- 7:51very interested to see how our school system
- 7:53is, not just K through 12, but especially college
- 7:56and the perception around college and the stigmatism,
- 7:59the society norms. you know come another five
- 8:02ten fifteen years because just in my journey
- 8:05of Really diving into the financial independence
- 8:07retire early space and in which then led to real
- 8:10estate space There are so many other ways to
- 8:13be educated in my drive an MBA. So I've done
- 8:16my fair share of your traditional education But
- 8:20there are so many ways to be educated and not
- 8:23only obviously books and podcasts but networking
- 8:26like this and different masterminds and coaching
- 8:30programs. There's just so many ways to be educated
- 8:33these days that it doesn't need to just be that
- 8:37you have to go to college or you're going to
- 8:38be a loser. Yeah well and we if our kids want
- 8:41to go to college for the experience fine my husband
- 8:45has a doctorate I have my master's degree I mean
- 8:47we get it yeah yeah degrees but we're still like
- 8:51if they want to pull Adonis brothers and decide
- 8:54to go to real estate 18. And that too, because
- 8:57I tell you, one of the things I learned from
- 8:59those guys was something that I incorporate into
- 9:02my calls when I'm going out and trying to raise
- 9:05capital, which is that double dial, which, um,
- 9:07I don't know if you've ever heard them talk about
- 9:09it, but it was, um, which one of the twins was
- 9:12it's Jeffrey, the one that talks, Kenneth talks
- 9:15a lot too. Okay. Well, not in a bad way. One
- 9:20of them is the one that does the most reach out.
- 9:22So he, he, the guy on the phone. that thing is
- 9:25Jeffrey because Kerwin's the older one anyway
- 9:29doesn't matter um so he talks about this thing
- 9:31called the double dial and what you do on the
- 9:34double dial is you call if they don't answer
- 9:36hang up wait 30 seconds to 60 seconds and call
- 9:39back a lot of time they'll answer on the second
- 9:41call because they're like man what number is
- 9:42this it must be important if they and then this
- 9:46is where i took it and i took it a little bit
- 9:48further and made it my own if they don't answer
- 9:50on the second call you have to leave a voicemail
- 9:52If you forget to leave a voicemail on the second
- 9:54call, you can't call three times because you
- 9:55look like a psycho. You got to do it again. So
- 9:59you leave a voicemail after the second call and
- 10:01then follow it up with a text that says what
- 10:02the voicemail is. So you've got voicemail, touch
- 10:04one, text, touch two. And when you finally get
- 10:07on the phone, that's three touches. I like that.
- 10:10I'm totally stealing that. So thank you. And
- 10:12thank you, Donna's brothers. Right. But I was,
- 10:15it's scary. I'm not going to lie. It's scary.
- 10:17It feels really uncomfortable for a little bit.
- 10:21Like And even now that's what I do. Like the
- 10:25first couple of phone calls I do on a day like
- 10:27that. I'm like, Ooh, this feels weird. But it,
- 10:31we're not going to lie. I need to do more phone
- 10:33calls. Yeah. But then that's, I think it's just,
- 10:37um, it was something that I learned from them
- 10:39and they were just getting started and very young.
- 10:43And I was already in my forties and I was like,
- 10:45I'm totally going to try that because I think
- 10:47you can learn from anyone. And so I think they
- 10:50decided. that they were going to be able to do
- 10:53more getting into real estate and really educating
- 10:56themselves. They got into a really good program.
- 10:59They're in a great program. They have a lot of
- 11:01support around them and they get to go to conferences
- 11:03that have reduced price. I did not know this
- 11:05one. If you're under like 25, you get a reduced
- 11:08price to go to some of the major conferences.
- 11:10I had no idea. So they've been riding that train.
- 11:14I had no idea. We actually were partnered with
- 11:17them on their They have a deal in Atlanta, Georgia
- 11:19that closed in November. So we partnered with
- 11:22them on that particular deal. And so that's how
- 11:24I've gotten to know that Donna's brothers. And
- 11:26then it sounds like we're on some of the same
- 11:29shows. So we both, they went out and then I went
- 11:33out to Denver to be on the Bigger Pockets multifamily
- 11:36mentors show. And then obviously you've chatted
- 11:39with them as well. So. That's funny. It's a small
- 11:42world, but I think that goes to the point. Like
- 11:44there's such a great example and there's others
- 11:45out there as well that have gotten started real
- 11:47estate so young that I think college absolutely
- 11:50has a place. And I think one of the places it's
- 11:52really good as it gives you that buffer. Like
- 11:54to me, it gives you that buffer between child
- 11:56being a child and being a full fledged adult.
- 11:59You get that three, four or five year, whatever
- 12:01it is, buffer time to really figure yourself
- 12:04out a little bit more and have some independence
- 12:08and mature. But I think depending on your personality,
- 12:11like if you leave high school and you're super
- 12:13self -motivated and you kind of know what you're
- 12:15going to do and you are going to take the bull
- 12:17by the horns and go after it, you know, maybe
- 12:20it's not as needed. Now, if you're going to go
- 12:21in the corporate side and you want to get promoted
- 12:23and you want to be an executive, you need the
- 12:25formal education because it's a check mark. And
- 12:28that was part of why I went and got a master's
- 12:30degree because I wanted to continue to be promoted
- 12:32and I needed that check mark. If that's not the,
- 12:37if that's not the angle you're going, there's
- 12:38so many opportunities out there. No, there absolutely
- 12:41are. And I think that like just comes back to,
- 12:44you know, why are people choosing real estate?
- 12:46And we were talking before we started hitting
- 12:47record about my TRS account. I've been lamenting
- 12:51over the TRS account for years. I think every
- 12:54time Parker and I get on a call, I'm lamenting
- 12:56about the TRS account, begging somebody to help
- 12:58me get my money from that freaking TRS account.
- 13:01But that was what you were taught to do. You
- 13:03were taught to make good grades, go to college,
- 13:06get a job and get your retirement. And I just
- 13:10want my money. Dang it. I can do so much more
- 13:15with it, but you don't know that. And it's also
- 13:16super risky. So yeah, this retirement pension.
- 13:20And I'm like, I want all of it. I want to pull
- 13:22it all. And if I'm going to self directed, is
- 13:24there a chance I could lose it all? Absolutely.
- 13:27Is that going to happen? Probably not. You know,
- 13:31Jason and I have been in residential real estate
- 13:32for two decades. We both grew up in families
- 13:35and invested in residential real estate and we've
- 13:37been in multifamily for five years. I mean, I
- 13:38feel like we have a pretty good educational base
- 13:41on what we're doing. And so even though it might
- 13:43be risky to the average person out there, I feel
- 13:46it's really risky at all. And by taking control
- 13:49of my retirement money, I can do so much more
- 13:52with it.
