Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: Defenses Are A Step Ahead Of Eagles Protection Schemes
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 2: Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan. And of course, we're breaking
- 0:16Speaker 2: down tape with Greg Cosell, who's going to sift through
- 0:19Speaker 2: the carnage of another Eagles loss. Four straight losses for
- 0:22Speaker 2: the Philadelphia Eagles. I wonder if two guys actually predicted
- 0:25Speaker 2: the Eagles to win that game.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Oh, wait.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We'll just talk about that.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Now, now. Come on, now. Sorry, sorry.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I had to throw that in there.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Humble brag time, Gary.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. But, no, another Eagles loss, and obviously the
- 0:37Speaker 2: fallout from the loss is even worse. Jalen Hurts is
- 0:40Speaker 2: now going to be out for the rest of the
- 0:42Speaker 2: season with the multiple blood clots that were determined that
- 0:48Speaker 2: he has. And so it's a Tanner McKeeshow, Greg, from
- 0:50Speaker 2: here on out. And, you know, as we talk about this,
- 0:53Speaker 2: we'll break down the offense from the Panthers game. in
- 0:56Speaker 2: the loss here first. I'll leave it to you, but
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you didn't see a whole lot of opportunity
- 1:03Speaker 2: for overall success, just given the environment to begin with,
- 1:07Speaker 2: the blocking, the lack of a run, stuff we've talked about.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Well, I think one of the things that really stands
- 1:13Speaker 1: out over these, not just this game, but of course
- 1:16Speaker 1: it was very evident in this game, is clearly teams
- 1:19Speaker 1: are blitzing the Eagles a lot. And when teams blitz
- 1:22Speaker 1: a lot, and particularly with overload concepts, which happened right
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the first play, but that was very foundational to
- 1:28Speaker 1: what the Panthers did throughout the game. What that immediately
- 1:31Speaker 1: tells me just from doing this for years and years,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and I'm sure Adam and speaking to offensive line coaches,
- 1:36Speaker 1: he knows a number of them in the league. What
- 1:38Speaker 1: that tells you is that teams are very sure of
- 1:41Speaker 1: how the Eagles protect, because what the whole point of
- 1:44Speaker 1: blitzing is, is not just random. Oh, let's blitz. It's
- 1:47Speaker 1: your attacking protections. And again, You know, that's what's been
- 1:51Speaker 1: evident to me over the last number of weeks is
- 1:53Speaker 1: that teams clearly they feel they have a very good
- 1:56Speaker 1: sense of how the Eagles protect. So they feel by
- 1:59Speaker 1: what they do with their pressure schemes and concepts that
- 2:02Speaker 1: they can break down that protection. And I think that's
- 2:05Speaker 1: something that's been pretty evident. You know, that's we're not
- 2:08Speaker 1: saying anything out of school here. That's what the tape shows.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Right. Do you– I mean, I know you have always said, Greg,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and we're saying, you know, not being an offensive line guru,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but I know you've gone to masterminds. You've talked with linemen.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Do you feel like there's a case of that it's
- 2:23Speaker 2: a complicated protection scheme? Like can they simplify it to
- 2:29Speaker 2: make it easier?
- 2:30Speaker 1: You know, the thing about good blitzing teams too, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: I don't want to make it seem like, boy, the
- 2:35Speaker 1: Eagles stink because they're not the only team where teams,
- 2:37Speaker 1: you know, create some free hitters, you know. obviously I'm
- 2:40Speaker 1: sure fans in Philly think that's the case, but of
- 2:42Speaker 1: course it's not the case, is there's not 50 protection schemes,
- 2:49Speaker 1: you know? So it's, you have to, as an offense,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you also have to have a sense of what the
- 2:55Speaker 1: other team likes to do with their pressure concepts. And,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know, when they like to do them, what part
- 3:02Speaker 1: of the, you know, everything I remember when, and Anna
- 3:05Speaker 1: will remember this, when Paul Gunther used to come into
- 3:07Speaker 1: the office on a number of occasions and you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: he helped put together the whole double mug concept for
- 3:13Speaker 1: when he was with the Vikings with Mike Zimmer, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and that seemed like a new thing back then, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: a number of years ago, and now everybody does it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And he would always talk about, you know, the fact
- 3:23Speaker 1: that you build your rush concepts off your study of protections.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And then the offense also builds how they protect off
- 3:34Speaker 1: their study of what you do defensively. So that's the
- 3:37Speaker 1: chess match part of it, because there's not like I said,
- 3:40Speaker 1: 10 or 20 protections. So there are times, and I've
- 3:43Speaker 1: done pieces like this in the matchup show, where a team,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they can set up an overload look to one side
- 3:49Speaker 1: and then they can dictate your protection because you have
- 3:52Speaker 1: to account for bodies and then they'll come from the
- 3:55Speaker 1: other side and you don't have enough bodies. So teams,
- 3:59Speaker 1: it's that chess match. So some of them look bad
- 4:04Speaker 1: and others are just really, they happen to get you
- 4:07Speaker 1: on a given play. Teams can do that on both sides.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You know, so it's just, it seems, of course, in
- 4:13Speaker 1: these last number of games that the Eagles have been
- 4:15Speaker 1: on the losing end of that more often than not.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought, Greg, that part of what you're talking about,
- 4:21Speaker 3: and there's this sort of communication that goes on with
- 4:25Speaker 3: linemen who've played together a long time. Yep. And they
- 4:28Speaker 3: have certain signals, pre-snap. Trey Thomas, when he worked with us,
- 4:32Speaker 3: told us this stuff. You know, it was very interesting education.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yep.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And the problem is you're playing with three backups. who
- 4:40Speaker 3: are just, and they shouldn't be playing. And then you
- 4:42Speaker 3: add that you've only got two veterans on the line.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It's really hard.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It's hard. And the other thing too is, look, we've
- 4:51Speaker 1: spoken about how you can't change the protection in the
- 4:54Speaker 1: middle of the play, but you do need your offensive
- 4:56Speaker 1: linemen to have awareness. I mean, if you're playing a
- 4:59Speaker 1: team that pressures, you know, you have to have awareness
- 5:02Speaker 1: of more than just the guys right in front of you.
- 5:06Speaker 1: There has to be a sense that, hey, based on this,
- 5:09Speaker 1: defensive alignment, this guy might come, you know, what does
- 5:13Speaker 1: that mean? You know, so many times you'll see communication
- 5:17Speaker 1: with offensive linemen where they talk to one another, or
- 5:20Speaker 1: you'll see an offensive lineman sort of tap his, his,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know, his ass, so to speak. I think I
- 5:25Speaker 1: can say ass tap his ass. And, and that tells
- 5:28Speaker 1: the back, Hey, I'm doing this. So you do that.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You know, there's always communication. And when you're playing with
- 5:34Speaker 1: new guys, sometimes that communication, number one is wrong. Number two,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it could be too late. Number two, it could not
- 5:40Speaker 1: be clear. You know, there's any number of factors because
- 5:44Speaker 1: sometimes you'll watch a play and you'll, you guys don't
- 5:46Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about as well. The people listening,
- 5:48Speaker 1: sometimes you watch a play and you go, how did
- 5:50Speaker 1: that guy just not see that guy? He literally ran
- 5:53Speaker 1: right next to him, you know, and I don't know
- 5:56Speaker 1: the answer to that, but I mean, you see it
- 5:58Speaker 1: a lot. Right.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Greg, uh, obviously, you know, Drew Kendall couldn't go, they
- 6:03Speaker 2: warmed him up on the field.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He wasn't ready.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So we saw another, uh, Playing with Jake Majors at
- 6:08Speaker 2: the center, Willie Lampkin at left guard, Steen at right guard.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Eagles could not generate much of a running game. What
- 6:14Speaker 2: did you see up front individually from that?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Well, they had two good run plays. They were back-to-back.
- 6:19Speaker 1: They were both outside zone to the right side of
- 6:21Speaker 1: the line, both nine-yard runs. And you thought, okay, maybe
- 6:24Speaker 1: they'll have a run game. Other than that, they couldn't
- 6:26Speaker 1: run the ball. And it's funny because the play right
- 6:30Speaker 1: after the second nine-yard run, Lloyd shot the gap. And,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you know, they just couldn't. He was right in the backfield.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I think it was a three-yard loss. but they just
- 6:39Speaker 1: can't run the ball. They don't, they don't really move
- 6:41Speaker 1: people very well. I think there's a communication issue with
- 6:44Speaker 1: their run game as well. I don't think they, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: don't forget zone run game is based. It's, it's synchronized swimming. It's,
- 6:50Speaker 1: it's not just, Oh, you, it's not individuals. You know,
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's not, you got him, you got him, you got him. Right.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You know, sometimes it plays out that you have to
- 6:57Speaker 1: make an individual block. Like I thought on one of
- 7:00Speaker 1: the two nine yard runs, I thought majors did a
- 7:02Speaker 1: really nice job working up to the second level. but
- 7:05Speaker 1: there's a ton of communication involved. I remember when I
- 7:08Speaker 1: first met and worked with Phil Sims, which goes back
- 7:11Speaker 1: to the first year he retired. And he told me
- 7:13Speaker 1: that the run game is so much harder to teach
- 7:16Speaker 1: and master than pass protection. He said, it's just really,
- 7:20Speaker 1: really hard and it requires an incredible amount of work.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And obviously played on a Giants team that ran the,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, ran the ball, you know, back in those days,
- 7:28Speaker 1: that was all about the run game. I'm sure many
- 7:30Speaker 1: remember Otis Anderson in the Superbowl, you know, so he, he, And,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, you nailed it. The fact that they're, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: Adam just spoke about it. He's, and he's a hundred percent, right.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You're playing with three new guys. They have no idea
- 7:43Speaker 1: how to do all this together. Yeah. Think of it.
- 7:46Speaker 3: If this had been early August, right. They could get
- 7:49Speaker 3: these guys work together. You know, it was not the
- 7:51Speaker 3: pressure of the season. In fact, how he could have
- 7:53Speaker 3: signed a veteran.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 3: They didn't know Lane Johnson was going to retire. Marco
- 7:57Speaker 3: Bo's not supposed to play this season.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Jake majors was a nice story. He's a third string center.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He's a third drafted player. Yes.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yes. And Willie Lampkin is good as a story as
- 8:07Speaker 3: he is. He goes, don't want him playing. Right.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you're dealing with an two undrafted players
- 8:13Speaker 1: now starting and a, and a right tackle who played
- 8:16Speaker 1: left tackle in college, who a lot of people like,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but all agreed was not ready to play this year. Right.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So that's what you're dealing with.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And that forces guys like Jordan, my Lada and Tyler
- 8:26Speaker 2: Steen to try to have to pick up the pieces here.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And then if they have some bad snaps, it really
- 8:32Speaker 1: gets magnified. Steen had a number of bad snaps in
- 8:34Speaker 1: this game in the run game. And there was one pass,
- 8:37Speaker 1: which were my, a lot. I don't recall ever seeing my,
- 8:39Speaker 1: a lot of get beat like that. And then, and,
- 8:42Speaker 1: and he, it wasn't a sack cause the ball came out,
- 8:44Speaker 1: but he, I mean, he was totally spun around. He
- 8:47Speaker 1: was lost. I don't recall seeing him like that. Now
- 8:49Speaker 1: he didn't have a terrible game. It's just this one
- 8:51Speaker 1: play that was so glaring. Cause you don't see that. Right.
- 8:56Speaker 2: From a receiving standpoint, did you, did, What are you
- 8:59Speaker 2: noticing about who, I know they don't always do X, Z, but,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know, condensed formations split two by two.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Anything really?
- 9:07Speaker 1: That's the other thing that, and I'm sure you saw
- 9:10Speaker 1: that in my notes as I was watching the tape,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I was just thinking to myself, I said, God, they're
- 9:15Speaker 1: not really lining up very much in three by one sets,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, because like I told you guys, I don't
- 9:21Speaker 1: look at numbers or stats until I watch because, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: it's very easy to be prejudiced or biased by numbers,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know, and then you watch it and you that's
- 9:29Speaker 1: the way you think no matter what you see. Right.
- 9:31Speaker 1: But so then I looked and they didn't line up
- 9:34Speaker 1: very much. You saw the numbers. I think on my,
- 9:37Speaker 1: in my notes that it was high percentage two by two.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And what that probably tells you is they don't really
- 9:43Speaker 1: feel that they have that boundary X receiver, because if
- 9:47Speaker 1: you have that guy, you're going to use that guy.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Adam and I did this. I mean, not that this
- 9:52Speaker 2: guy is a natural boundary X, but they did not
- 9:54Speaker 2: decided to make healthy scratch out of Hollywood Brown.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And you know, Darius Cooper is a guy that Adam
- 10:00Speaker 2: and I have spoken about on other shows where we
- 10:02Speaker 2: thought maybe it's time to really see what he is,
- 10:05Speaker 2: see what he's got in certain.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I mean, again, it's hard to know the answer to
- 10:09Speaker 1: that just because the sample size is small. But my
- 10:12Speaker 1: sense is because I did watch his college tape last
- 10:14Speaker 1: summer when he remember he did well in the preseason.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So I went back and watched his tape. My sense
- 10:19Speaker 1: is he's more of a movement guy. That would be
- 10:21Speaker 1: my sense. You know, guy who's kind of a Z,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know, a movement Z, a slot, you know, that
- 10:27Speaker 1: would be, you know, I don't see him that way.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Now that doesn't mean I'm right. I'm just telling you,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, what I see. But as much as we
- 10:34Speaker 1: love Devante Smith, he's that guy too. He's not a
- 10:37Speaker 1: true boundary X either. So they don't have that guy.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So I think that's one reason they lined up in
- 10:43Speaker 1: so much two by two. And then, you have to
- 10:46Speaker 1: be careful because then that stuff becomes predictable too. Correct.
- 10:50Speaker 2: All right, let's go right to the footage and sort
- 10:54Speaker 2: of talk about from the first play, the first offensive play. Hey,

- 12:25Speaker 2: Prize picks run your game. We'll discuss what you mean, Greg,
- 12:29Speaker 2: when you say protection is somewhat of a.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and again, you're not expecting this, okay? And by
- 12:37Speaker 1: the way, this time they are lined up in a
- 12:38Speaker 1: three-by-one set on the first play. And you're not necessarily... Well,
- 12:42Speaker 1: let's put it this way. I don't think you're expecting this.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I mean, I... It obviously is not the kind of
- 12:47Speaker 1: play you want to have happen because all of a
- 12:49Speaker 1: sudden your first play of the game and you're right
- 12:51Speaker 1: behind the eight ball because it's an 11-yard loss, but
- 12:54Speaker 1: they come with an overload blitz into the boundary, which
- 12:59Speaker 1: they did quite a number of times. And they can't
- 13:02Speaker 1: pick this up based on how they protect because how
- 13:04Speaker 1: they're protecting here, and this is just a protection call.
- 13:08Speaker 1: They made the call in the huddle. It's the protection
- 13:10Speaker 1: because the right guard, Steen, goes to, the two eye
- 13:14Speaker 1: or the, or the, you know, that D tackle. So
- 13:18Speaker 1: now you end up with just two to pretty much
- 13:21Speaker 1: block and you can see it. I mean, if you
- 13:23Speaker 1: run this Jeff, you'll, you'll see there's, there's really, they
- 13:28Speaker 1: can't pick it up. There's two guys who are free
- 13:29Speaker 1: hitters here. Right. And, and, and I mean, technically one
- 13:33Speaker 1: guy because Pierce is there, but it's play action. It's
- 13:36Speaker 1: supposed to be a play action boot, you know, and
- 13:38Speaker 1: here's the interesting thing. If you go back to the
- 13:39Speaker 1: sideline real quick, you can argue they would have had
- 13:42Speaker 1: a play. Because, you know, look at, is that Goddard?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Who's number three to trips? Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 3: 35.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But I imagine the defense knows that that's going to
- 13:55Speaker 2: be the case if they, but they know they're going
- 13:57Speaker 2: to get the free run or they expect to get.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Sure. Yeah. They anticipate that based on the call, but
- 14:03Speaker 1: they end up really with a high low on the corner. And,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you know, they're anticipating that McKee is going to, boot
- 14:09Speaker 1: out to his left, you know, relatively clean, and he's
- 14:11Speaker 1: going to have time to decide where to throw it.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Right. Here's the best angle you can see.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so you see that Steen, you know, blocks the
- 14:19Speaker 1: guy right in front of him, 95. And now you've
- 14:22Speaker 1: got 21 and 58, and it's going to be play action.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And one thing you're taught, by the way, and I
- 14:29Speaker 1: learned this from Errol Hodge, if there's a blitzer as
- 14:32Speaker 1: a back, you abandon the play action. You've got to
- 14:34Speaker 1: go block someone. You don't run through the fake. You've
- 14:37Speaker 1: got to go block someone. Right. He kind of does,
- 14:41Speaker 1: but there's two guys. I mean, he can't block.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Both of them.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:46Speaker 2: By the way, Greg, I don't know if you saw
- 14:48Speaker 2: the numbers, but their under center play action game against
- 14:51Speaker 2: the Panthers might be the worst in terms of either
- 14:54Speaker 2: production or EPA you'll ever see in your life. It
- 14:57Speaker 2: was really bad. And it's been bad all year.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yep. Which is surprising because we thought that would be
- 15:03Speaker 1: a strength. Right. Right.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Well, that was supposed to be.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You got to have.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Well, they're missing a lot of elements to help make
- 15:10Speaker 2: that work as well. Here's another sack. This is the
- 15:12Speaker 2: third quarter one where Devin Lloyd comes through.
- 15:16Speaker 1: So wait, this is which one now?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Devin Lloyd sack.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And when is this one?
- 15:21Speaker 2: I believe third quarter.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Oh, okay. This is the second and eighth, Manolo, third quarter. Yes.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And another snapshot of a free hitter. This is the
- 15:28Speaker 1: one that was bang play action with McKee under center
- 15:31Speaker 1: with outside zone run action into the boundary. You can
- 15:33Speaker 1: see Lloyd started to react to the run. Then he
- 15:36Speaker 1: just triggered vertically, and there was no one to account
- 15:38Speaker 1: for him.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the carries. I mean, it looks like the
- 15:42Speaker 2: play action does its job until Lloyd just realizes it's not,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and he's able to pounce on it.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Well, I mean, it's not that it didn't do its job.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It's just that he's– and this is a great play
- 15:54Speaker 1: by Lloyd, not because he made the sack, because with
- 15:56Speaker 1: the run action where it is, he realized that that's
- 15:59Speaker 1: not his play. So instead of just running over there,
- 16:03Speaker 1: it's not his play because it's going to be outside zone.
- 16:06Speaker 1: into the boundary. He's, he's the stacked backer basically on
- 16:09Speaker 1: the field side. So it's not his play. So instead
- 16:13Speaker 1: of just covering, you know, a grass, he sees what's
- 16:17Speaker 1: happening and he goes. Yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Is this on anybody? I mean, well, it's too late.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I mean, months trying, but he's, he's too late.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 2: No, I meant even on, on like the quarterback to
- 16:27Speaker 2: throw it to a spot.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Well, he's dropping back and he wants to throw it immediately.
- 16:32Speaker 1: And yeah, See, he wants to throw it to the
- 16:35Speaker 1: receiver on the right there. I can't see the number.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I think it's Devonta.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Oh, it's Devonta. That's what the play is. But also,
- 16:41Speaker 1: the other linebacker is kind of in the passing lane,
- 16:43Speaker 1: so he probably wouldn't have had the throw. We've seen
- 16:46Speaker 1: every team run this. I call it bang play action.
- 16:48Speaker 1: It's quick play action. You hit your back foot, and
- 16:50Speaker 1: you're basically delivering the ball. The old A.J.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Brown Titans play.
- 16:55Speaker 2: I've got to give the linebacker credit because he doesn't
- 16:57Speaker 2: really bite too hard on this.
- 16:59Speaker 1: No, he does not.
- 16:59Speaker 2: So it allows him to get depth.
- 17:00Speaker 1: He does not. So something tells him that this is
- 17:03Speaker 1: not a run. But I can't tell you what it is.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I'm sure that's film study, you know. But something told
- 17:09Speaker 1: Okereke that it's not a run.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that was smart on his part. Last, another sack,
- 17:14Speaker 2: again with a free hitter, I believe. This is the
- 17:17Speaker 2: combined sack between Moorig and Jalen Phillips in the fourth quarter.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Oh, this was the one pretty much at the end
- 17:22Speaker 1: of the game, right? Yes. Fourth quarter. This came out
- 17:25Speaker 1: of a loaded front with both linebackers on the ball
- 17:27Speaker 1: opposite the load. Okereke dropped. And then Mayrigg from the
- 17:32Speaker 1: field added in as a rusher. And they knew how
- 17:34Speaker 1: the Eagles would protect because the back, they forced Pierce
- 17:37Speaker 1: to have to block all game. So they rushed six
- 17:40Speaker 1: because they knew that Pierce would protect. And there was
- 17:45Speaker 1: no one to account for Mayrigg. Right.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean, another free hitter right through.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I mean, this stuff's hard, guys, but you got to
- 17:54Speaker 1: figure it out. I mean, you can't just go into
- 17:56Speaker 1: a game and say it's hard. You got to figure
- 17:57Speaker 1: it out. And I certainly don't know the answer. So
- 17:59Speaker 1: I'm not pretending I do, but look here, stop, go
- 18:02Speaker 1: back to us before Mayra comes in. If you can.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Okay. Right here. So what do you got here is
- 18:08Speaker 1: a six man front. And if the, if the tight
- 18:11Speaker 1: end does not, is not part of the protection, then
- 18:13Speaker 1: the back's part of the protection. So you got six
- 18:15Speaker 1: to block six. So now if, if a seventh guy
- 18:19Speaker 1: comes the way the rules state is that's on the quarterback. Correct.
- 18:23Speaker 1: So it doesn't, it doesn't matter who drops out because
- 18:26Speaker 1: somebody drops.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Out, but they all stay or all the, the protection
- 18:32Speaker 2: drops out, but he makes sure he eats up the
- 18:35Speaker 2: left guard, uh, Lampkin.
- 18:37Speaker 1: And now there's no one to block. Um, Merrick, there's
- 18:41Speaker 1: no one to block them.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:45Speaker 1: They got stuck though, because they did use Goddard here
- 18:47Speaker 1: as a blocker. So, um, again, that's something with communication.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You got to figure out because technically they had seven,
- 18:54Speaker 1: to block seven, and it didn't map out the way
- 18:59Speaker 1: it should. Right.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I was wondering if it's on the quarterback. Usually that's
- 19:02Speaker 2: where the tight end comes in.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Maybe it's not on the quarterback because Goddard's clearly a
- 19:06Speaker 1: primary pass protector here.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yeah, look at the routes. I mean, no one's there
- 19:11Speaker 2: to catch the ball. If he notices that free rusher
- 19:14Speaker 2: now and wants to throw, there's no throw. There's no
- 19:16Speaker 2: one there. So, yeah, rough time. This is obviously something
- 19:22Speaker 2: that they– continue to have to figure out as you
- 19:24Speaker 2: said i want to switch focus we'll go to the
- 19:26Speaker 2: running game a little bit greg uh they didn't have
- 19:28Speaker 2: much you know you pointed out one of the early
- 19:31Speaker 2: runs a minus three on damian pierce here.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Yeah i'm trying to uh this was in the first quarter.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Uh yes sir no no not first quarter yeah first
- 19:42Speaker 2: quarter i think third possession fourth possession where they're trying
- 19:45Speaker 2: to establish the.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Run Oh, the run blitzes that caused problems. Pierce minus
- 19:50Speaker 1: three yards on the fourth possession was a strong snapshot. Yes. Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So it's outside zone, right?
- 19:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it looks like it. No, it's not. No, no, no, no. Okay,
- 20:01Speaker 1: it's not. It's not outside zone. It's probably more inside
- 20:04Speaker 1: or mid zone. Yep. Yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 2: But he didn't have a shot there.
- 20:09Speaker 1: No. No, I'm trying to remember exactly who made the
- 20:13Speaker 1: play here, if you keep going. Yeah, I'll go. Yeah,
- 20:16Speaker 1: so they're going to bring Mayrig, and he's unblocked here.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And there's no way that whoever that is can block him.
- 20:23Speaker 1: That's impossible because he basically is a run blitz.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, that's Lampkin.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So he comes in, and he makes the play. I mean,
- 20:30Speaker 1: there's– and then other guys got beat as well.
- 20:33Speaker 2: I was going to say, he makes it from the backside, though.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It looks like from the play side, the blocking.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Just– Yeah, they didn't handle this really well. Look at Steen.
- 20:42Speaker 1: They're in a reduced front. They're in a bare front. So,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, it becomes one-on-one blocking. Even in his own call,
- 20:50Speaker 1: you have to sort of block the guy in front
- 20:52Speaker 1: of you because he's right in front of you. Right.
- 20:54Speaker 2: So it looks like Steen has matched up against number three,
- 20:57Speaker 2: and he gets tossed around there like a rag.
- 21:00Speaker 1: He just gets tossed away. Three is Newman-Milan, I believe. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 1: he just beat him with quickness off the ball. Yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 1: as I said, Steen had probably three or four tough
- 21:10Speaker 1: run-blocking snaps in this game.
- 21:11Speaker 2: This might be another one. I think this was– it
- 21:14Speaker 2: wasn't noted, Greg. It's a two-yard game, but it looked
- 21:17Speaker 2: like he tried to run duo, but Steen can't hold up.
- 21:20Speaker 1: It's duo. Yeah.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I mean, look how he just got completely ripped off
- 21:24Speaker 2: there by– is that Wharton? He's a good player.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah. 98? Yeah, I mean, that's the kind of stuff
- 21:29Speaker 1: you just, you know– that's communicate– I mean.
- 21:34Speaker 2: This is a great– by the way, this is a
- 21:35Speaker 2: great look you want to run duo against. I mean,
- 21:37Speaker 2: they have the opportunity, and you got two big guys
- 21:40Speaker 2: in Steen and Markel Bell right there on one– I mean,
- 21:43Speaker 2: if this block holds up just a little bit, then
- 21:47Speaker 2: he's got.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Steen lost it there because Bell, he's going up
- 21:51Speaker 1: to the next level. Now, he probably could have waited
- 21:53Speaker 1: a touch longer because that linebacker is still five yards
- 21:56Speaker 1: off the ball, but that's kind of the unspoken communication
- 22:00Speaker 1: that those guys don't have. Right, right. That's what we
- 22:04Speaker 1: were talking about. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
- 22:08Speaker 2: So that's another not a great run.
- 22:10Speaker 1: That's tough. I mean, it's just a tough deal.
- 22:12Speaker 2: We're legally obligated to show something good from the Eagles offense.
- 22:16Speaker 2: So you like this bender from Goddard here that went
- 22:19Speaker 2: for 15 yards in the second quarter?
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, this was, I mean, you know, you
- 22:24Speaker 1: saw flashes with McKeon. By the way, I thought he
- 22:26Speaker 1: hung in there pretty well. You know, this is tough.
- 22:30Speaker 1: No run game. A lot of pressure. you know, some,
- 22:34Speaker 1: some clear, you know, issues in pass pro. I mean, he, he,
- 22:38Speaker 1: I thought he hung in there, you know, don't forget
- 22:40Speaker 1: it was 1914 when they got the ball and majors on,
- 22:44Speaker 1: on the first place snaps that, you know, throws a
- 22:47Speaker 1: ground ball at them and they lose 12 yards. Now
- 22:49Speaker 1: I'm not saying they would have scored one in the game.
- 22:51Speaker 1: We have no idea what would have happened, but right
- 22:53Speaker 1: at that moment, you're probably thinking, Hey, they got a
- 22:55Speaker 1: shot here. They had just scored a touchdown, their defense held,
- 22:59Speaker 1: and it's now 1914. Right. Let's see this again.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Is this an RPO, Greg?
- 23:05Speaker 1: Let me see. Could be. You know, every team categorizes
- 23:10Speaker 1: this differently. You know, it could be RPO or it
- 23:12Speaker 1: could just be quick game with run action.
- 23:15Speaker 3: I like how he got rid of it quickly. Greg,
- 23:17Speaker 3: sometimes I watch him. His whole process from snap to
- 23:21Speaker 3: drop back to release could take a little bit longer.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Well, that's because he's so long. Right.
- 23:25Speaker 3: But there were some throws that were short, which there
- 23:28Speaker 3: was no one around him. And the ball just kind
- 23:29Speaker 3: of didn't go. We saw this in the preseason at
- 23:31Speaker 3: training camp where you just couldn't understand why is the
- 23:34Speaker 3: ball not being driven? He's a little bit mechanical sometimes.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I think that's who he is. You know,
- 23:42Speaker 1: there's a college quarterback right now at the University of
- 23:44Speaker 1: Minnesota who I've seen on TV who is somewhat like
- 23:47Speaker 1: that named Drake Lindsey. You know, he's a tall, under center,
- 23:51Speaker 1: play action, drop back quarterback. Right. You know. All right.
- 23:56Speaker 2: And then the touchdown to Smith.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Oh, this is beautiful. Two by two. It's beautiful. I mean, Smith,
- 24:02Speaker 1: Will Lee, by the way, is a good corner. And
- 24:05Speaker 1: he's a rookie. He's going to be a good player.
- 24:06Speaker 1: This is beautiful throw, beautiful catch. This is not bad
- 24:09Speaker 1: coverage at all. Nope.
- 24:11Speaker 3: This is a great throw.
- 24:12Speaker 1: This is a great throw and a really good catch.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I mean, this is, I mean, that's not, it's not
- 24:17Speaker 1: like Lee was beaten badly here. This is high level
- 24:20Speaker 1: execution by the quarterback and the receiver.
- 24:22Speaker 2: What do you think, just based on what the defensive
- 24:25Speaker 2: look here is, what's going through McKee's mind right now
- 24:27Speaker 2: on this two-by-two versus this, what, cover? It looks like
- 24:31Speaker 2: one high look.
- 24:32Speaker 1: What's going through his mind is he's got his best
- 24:33Speaker 1: receiver one-on-one on the outside, and there's nobody who can
- 24:36Speaker 1: help because the other players over, whoever that is inside
- 24:43Speaker 1: of Smith, and the safety is not getting there. It's
- 24:46Speaker 1: single high. The safety is in the middle of the field.
- 24:48Speaker 1: He's not getting there on a three-step timing fade ball.
- 24:52Speaker 1: He's not getting there. Right.
- 24:54Speaker 2: That was the argument.
- 24:55Speaker 1: He knew he was going to Smith pre-snap. Got it.
- 24:58Speaker 3: And look at how quickly he got rid of it.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I mean, he planned that foot and that ball was out.
- 25:02Speaker 3: That's what you want to see from him?
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yeah, he's going to him pre-snap. He knows. Yep.
- 25:06Speaker 2: He got the look he wanted and the matchup he
- 25:08Speaker 2: wanted right there. And like you said, good coverage, Greg.
- 25:10Speaker 2: But that's why, you know, Devontae is one of the best.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Well, it had to be perfect.
- 25:13Speaker 3: It had to be a perfect throw.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 26:15Speaker 2: more than me. It could be 30 degrees and I'll
- 26:17Speaker 2: be out there grilling burgers and steaks. But the one
- 26:20Speaker 2: thing that I really can't stand is losing my fish

- 27:55Speaker 1: He hung in there, guys. I mean, look, I'm sure,
- 27:57Speaker 1: you know, a lot of fans and obviously with the
- 27:59Speaker 1: Hurts news, it's, you know, very, very tough for Eagles
- 28:02Speaker 1: fans right now. And who knows what the future holds
- 28:04Speaker 1: for McKee. I mean, he's going to play again next
- 28:07Speaker 1: week for sure on Monday night in Philly, you know,
- 28:10Speaker 1: and I guess they'll decide, you know, as he plays more,
- 28:13Speaker 1: whether they want to keep putting him out there or
- 28:14Speaker 1: whether they think they need to put someone else out there.
- 28:17Speaker 1: you know, that that'll be a decision based on how
- 28:19Speaker 1: he plays, but they're going to have to shore up
- 28:22Speaker 1: the protection. It's, and look, I don't know what the
- 28:25Speaker 1: run game is going to be like. Obviously Barkley is
- 28:27Speaker 1: going to come back at some point, but you know, and,
- 28:31Speaker 1: and you have to assume that the old line will
- 28:33Speaker 1: get better the more they play. You know, I don't
- 28:36Speaker 1: know if Landon Dickerson is going to play. I guess
- 28:38Speaker 1: he was close this week from what Adam said on Friday.
- 28:41Speaker 1: So maybe he's going to be back this week. You know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: they do have the extra day who knows your, you know, But,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know, it's just hard to play when there's no
- 28:51Speaker 1: run game. It's really hard.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Absolutely. And maybe, you know, we've talked about the whole
- 28:57Speaker 2: senior offensive assistant for Mannion. Maybe what they need mostly
- 28:59Speaker 2: was a senior O-line coach. Maybe somebody like Chris Cooper.
- 29:03Speaker 3: A lot of teams have two O-line coaches. They have
- 29:05Speaker 3: Greg Austin, but who used to be second toward. No,
- 29:09Speaker 3: but if you remember, Mike Munchak was with the team
- 29:11Speaker 3: in summer. And as sort of a consultant, he's tight
- 29:15Speaker 3: with Cooper.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:16Speaker 3: And I believe Cooper brought him in. So, yeah, this
- 29:19Speaker 3: is where, to finish this off, we've talked two or
- 29:21Speaker 3: three years about them not having a senior offensive assistant.
- 29:23Speaker 3: That was a mistake.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:25Speaker 3: They really need that, but we'll move on.
- 29:27Speaker 1: All right.
- 29:28Speaker 2: That is a look at the Eagles offense. It wasn't pretty,
- 29:31Speaker 2: but we wanted to bring you inside what protection schemes
- 29:35Speaker 2: look like and why they weren't working in this specific
- 29:38Speaker 2: game and maybe look forward. to the next week and
- 29:41Speaker 2: see if anything changes.
- 29:42Speaker 1: One final point about that, just so people truly understand,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I've been doing this for a long time and when
- 29:47Speaker 1: I sit here until I learn more and more and
- 29:49Speaker 1: more and you still don't know for sure, but protection
- 29:52Speaker 1: schemes can often be the toughest thing to figure out
- 29:54Speaker 1: when I'm sitting here with a clicker and watching tape
- 29:57Speaker 1: So just keep that in mind. It's not, oh, they stink.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You know, that's an easy reaction when you're a fan.
- 30:03Speaker 1: But those are very hard things to figure out. Sometimes
- 30:05Speaker 1: the center changes something four seconds before the ball snapped
- 30:09Speaker 1: and you don't know what that change is. You know,
- 30:11Speaker 1: so it's just I just want people to understand that
- 30:15Speaker 1: those are not easy things. Yep.
- 30:17Speaker 2: And that's why I said in the postgame show to Adam,
