- 0:12Speaker 1: Today and Jeff Legwald now joins us.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Hey, Leggy, are the gon Fellas doing well?
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're just talking about a certain subject. And it is
- 0:22Speaker 1: Courtland Sutton. So he is thirty years old heading into
- 0:25Speaker 1: the final year of his contract. And here's my theory.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You tell me if I'm right or wrong. Is that
- 0:31Speaker 1: the third pick of the draft for them was Pat Bryant.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And I look at the wide receiver room and I
- 0:36Speaker 1: see Sutton and Mims in Vlea and Troy Franklin, a
- 0:39Speaker 1: whole bunch of guys I know they want to get
- 0:41Speaker 1: on the football field. They go, Hmmm, where does Pat
- 0:43Speaker 1: Bryant fit in? That is Pat Bryant perhaps an indication
- 0:48Speaker 1: of an insurance policy for not giving Courtland Sutton a
- 0:52Speaker 1: contract beyond this year.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I don't see it that way, and that's not been
- 0:58Speaker 3: conveyed to me. That doesn't mean there may not be
- 1:02Speaker 3: the inevitable preparation. If you're an NFL GM, you got
- 1:06Speaker 3: to make those preps. Whether it's uncomfortable, whether you don't
- 1:10Speaker 3: like it, you know, you got to approach things that way.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But I don't think they did that specifically just in case.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I mean, honestly, I think it would be something they
- 1:25Speaker 3: would have to address in the locker room in some
- 1:27Speaker 3: fashion if they did not get Courtland a deal.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I mean, he he.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Kept up his side of the bargain. You know last
- 1:36Speaker 3: year they didn't give him any new money last year
- 1:39Speaker 3: when he stayed away from the voluntary portion of the
- 1:44Speaker 3: off season program. Last summer year ago, he came to
- 1:48Speaker 3: the mandatory mini camp like he told him he would,
- 1:53Speaker 3: and they tweaked his deal to give him some incentives
- 1:56Speaker 3: that he earned because he was the bo Nicks's favorite receiver.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I think it would not be good form for them
- 2:06Speaker 3: among their veteran players to not then sign Cortland because
- 2:11Speaker 3: they've basically said and told him they would. They've been
- 2:15Speaker 3: very public that. You know what was George Peyton's quote,
- 2:19Speaker 3: we want him here a long time. And that's one
- 2:23Speaker 3: I think if you're the coach, you would have to
- 2:27Speaker 3: deal with in the locker room behind the scenes.
- 2:30Speaker 2: If you did not make that happen, what.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Do you consider him? I was just looking at the
- 2:35Speaker 1: ESPN article of all the top ten lists that are
- 2:38Speaker 1: coming out for each position in the league, and he's
- 2:40Speaker 1: in the He was the last one in the ULSO
- 2:43Speaker 1: receiving votes, which ironically Boonix was as well. But is
- 2:48Speaker 1: he a top twenty wide out twenty five thirty? Like,
- 2:52Speaker 1: what do you think of him?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Well, I mean you can rank him in the league
- 2:56Speaker 3: however you want. He's the top one wide out on
- 2:59Speaker 3: the Bronco Yes, And I think that's really the list
- 3:02Speaker 3: that matters, you know.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Uh, we can all argue about where guys.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Fit league wide, you know what, what's their impact and
- 3:10Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I suppose I'm just asking that for a if he's
- 3:13Speaker 1: wants a new contract with an an all of yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: yeah that thing.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Well, if I'm his agent, I say, I don't care.
- 3:22Speaker 3: He's the best receiver on your team, you know, get
- 3:25Speaker 3: your checkbook out, you know.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I just think, uh, you know, I I think he's
- 3:30Speaker 2: a w R one. Is he? You know? Is he the.
- 3:35Speaker 3: You know, are teams going in and game planning to
- 3:38Speaker 3: keep it out of his hands? Yes, you know, are
- 3:41Speaker 3: they fearful he could wreck a game on his own?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I don't.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I don't know that the defensive coaches I talked to
- 3:49Speaker 3: consider him that, uh, but they do believe he can
- 3:52Speaker 3: beat you, and and that he is bo Nix's favorite
- 3:57Speaker 3: receiver in the tightest down, in distant situations, the red zone, whatever.
- 4:03Speaker 3: That this is the guy bo Nicks wants to get
- 4:06Speaker 3: the ball to in the most pressure downs. And I
- 4:10Speaker 3: think that's what he is. He is a pressure down
- 4:13Speaker 3: receiver and those can be hard to find.
- 4:17Speaker 4: So just real quickly, before I ask my question to
- 4:19Speaker 4: follow up on that, can you give me a range
- 4:21Speaker 4: of expectations in terms of like are we talking twenty
- 4:25Speaker 4: five mil? Are we talking thirty mil?
- 4:27Speaker 2: A year?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Like?
- 4:28Speaker 4: What are we talking? If you think you're actually able
- 4:31Speaker 4: to get something done with Cortland?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's gonna take something to get his attention,
- 4:38Speaker 3: you know. And I don't know that those numbers are
- 4:42Speaker 3: you know. Sometimes I think we look at and you
- 4:44Speaker 3: guys have heard me say this, sometimes I think we
- 4:46Speaker 3: look at contracts like the cap is, it's twenty fifteen,
- 4:51Speaker 3: the CAP's gone up double digit percentages, you know, year
- 4:56Speaker 3: after year lately, so U, I think a lot of
- 5:00Speaker 3: those numbers just don't resonate the way they did in
- 5:05Speaker 3: house for teams.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I think certainly the Broncos believe he is an affordable player.
- 5:11Speaker 3: If he gets twenty five a year, that's affordable, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 3: in this day and age. So but I think if
- 5:17Speaker 3: your Courtland, it's probably your last good shot as a
- 5:21Speaker 3: receiver to get that multi year deal. So you're going
- 5:24Speaker 3: to try and do the best you can with that.
- 5:27Speaker 3: So of course you're going to ask for top of
- 5:29Speaker 3: market and then you're going to try and get what
- 5:32Speaker 3: you can get from there. But I just believe they
- 5:36Speaker 3: basically and the locker room is under the impression that
- 5:41Speaker 3: more importantly, that they told him they would do a
- 5:43Speaker 3: new deal. So I still think that's something that could
- 5:48Speaker 3: get done before camp's done. You know that that's one
- 5:51Speaker 3: of those things you could get done before the preseason's
- 5:55Speaker 3: over all.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Right, So you told us not to worry about John
- 5:59Speaker 4: ay Baron's kind So I listened to you, and I
- 6:01Speaker 4: didn't worry about it, and it got done. You also
- 6:04Speaker 4: told us not to worry about the RJ. Harvey contract,
- 6:08Speaker 4: And I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm having some
- 6:10Speaker 4: trouble following your instructions. Now, we did have another second
- 6:14Speaker 4: round picks on last night, but I mean, what.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Are you hearing?
- 6:18Speaker 4: What are you thinking about the RJ. Harvey contract?
- 6:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean right now, it's it's you know, most
- 6:25Speaker 3: teams are still in the rookies only phase. You know,
- 6:30Speaker 3: do I think there's any way RJ. Harvey or a
- 6:34Speaker 3: lot of these second round guys are really gonna stay
- 6:37Speaker 3: out when camp is fully in in in gear.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I don't believe that.
- 6:43Speaker 3: You know, Alfred Collins was the eleventh pick of the
- 6:46Speaker 3: second round. Uh, he got about eighty five eighty eight
- 6:51Speaker 3: percent of his deal guaranteed.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I think that's pretty much gonna be the benchmark, you know.
- 6:55Speaker 3: He I think last year's pick in that slot had
- 6:59Speaker 3: fifty eight percent of the deal guaranteed. So that's gonna
- 7:03Speaker 3: give everybody the window, you know, to get in. I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 3: that's this was an obvious whether they ever admitted or not,
- 7:11Speaker 3: this was a concerted effort to get guaranteed money into
- 7:14Speaker 3: the more guaranteed money into the second round, and they succeeded.
- 7:18Speaker 3: So I think the Alfred Collins signing last night is
- 7:22Speaker 3: a lot bigger deal than probably some people think, Oh,
- 7:25Speaker 3: it's the eleventh pick of the round, who cares. It's
- 7:28Speaker 3: really a percentage of the guaranteed money, which is I
- 7:32Speaker 3: believe nine million of the ten point three million overall
- 7:36Speaker 3: was guaranteed.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So I think that gets it all moving.
- 7:39Speaker 3: And I think all these second round guys will want
- 7:43Speaker 3: will be telling their agents, I want to be in
- 7:46Speaker 3: there when the full team reports. Broncos fully report on.
- 7:52Speaker 3: The rookies are in there now, but the Bronco the
- 7:55Speaker 3: veterans fully report on the twenty second Tuesday.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Jeff Leebell at ESPN dot com with us ask this
- 8:01Speaker 1: question earlier. I'm just curious because when you hit this
- 8:05Speaker 1: point in the calendar, everybody has a feeling their team's
- 8:08Speaker 1: going to be better than what they were last year.
- 8:11Speaker 1: For the Broncos, I guess the incremental step would be
- 8:13Speaker 1: winning a playoff game. My question is the other top
- 8:19Speaker 1: ten list that came out recently was the quarterbacks, and
- 8:22Speaker 1: at number one was Mahomes and at number seven was Herbert.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Can the Broncos reach their goals if bo Nicks is
- 8:30Speaker 1: the third best quarterback in his own division.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Certainly you know I think you know again, we've seen
- 8:37Speaker 3: lots of you know, Joe Burrows played in one Super Bowl.
- 8:42Speaker 2: In his career so far, and you know, he is
- 8:46Speaker 2: a top I don't know whatever layer you're making in
- 8:48Speaker 2: the league, but he's in it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so you need I mean, I think sometimes we
- 8:55Speaker 3: underestimate how difficult it is to win a Super Bowl.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Overall.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It's one of the most difficult things in sports because
- 9:04Speaker 3: there's so many moving parts and your quarterback has to
- 9:08Speaker 3: be really good and he's got to be really good
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the games and the downs and the situations when
- 9:14Speaker 3: it counts. But you don't necessarily have to be a
- 9:18Speaker 3: top three quarterback. It's just we we've lived in an era.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I think you've got to be in the upper third
- 9:26Speaker 3: minimum to make it all go really and your team's
- 9:32Speaker 3: got to be good enough around you. And that's the
- 9:34Speaker 3: rub because if you have one of the best quarterbacks,
- 9:36Speaker 3: he's making a nine digit contract with that takes up
- 9:41Speaker 3: a lot of your cap space and dictates a lot
- 9:44Speaker 3: of what you can do. So I think the Broncos
- 9:49Speaker 3: need and would like obviously to play at minimum in
- 9:55Speaker 3: a Super Bowl. When Nix is on the rookie deal,
- 9:57Speaker 3: that's your real window is have good enough quarterback to
- 10:01Speaker 3: play and win the Super Bowl on a rookie deal.
- 10:05Speaker 3: That's the really the best window in today's NFL unless
- 10:10Speaker 3: you've got a guy like Mahomes and Brady who is
- 10:13Speaker 3: actively taking a contracts that enable you to build things
- 10:18Speaker 3: around him. And there's no better example right now than Mahomes.
- 10:22Speaker 3: He is the best quarterback, but he does not have
- 10:25Speaker 3: the best quarterback deal because he wants to be the
- 10:29Speaker 3: best quarterback on the best team.
- 10:32Speaker 4: It's interesting to me, you know, I know you try
- 10:36Speaker 4: to stick to the journalism side here, but from your opinion,
- 10:40Speaker 4: do you think their weapons are good enough to make
- 10:43Speaker 4: a Super Bowl run like that over the next couple
- 10:45Speaker 4: of years. Have they done enough?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:48Speaker 3: I didn't hear a lot of people telling me how
- 10:50Speaker 3: great the Eagles weapons were last year in July. I mean,
- 10:54Speaker 3: everybody was like, you know, maybe Saquan will be really
- 10:58Speaker 3: good for them, and maybe they have enough at receiver.
- 11:02Speaker 3: But they were a dominant team in the playoffs because
- 11:07Speaker 3: their offensive and defensive line are elite, their quarterback is
- 11:13Speaker 3: really good, and Barkley had an MVP season. I don't
- 11:17Speaker 3: think any of those things were discussed as weapons this
- 11:22Speaker 3: time of year.
- 11:23Speaker 2: A year ago.
- 11:23Speaker 3: So I think I think a lot of the talk
- 11:26Speaker 3: on weapons is really fantasy football stuff. You know, will
- 11:29Speaker 3: they score enough touchdowns to make my fantasy team great?
- 11:33Speaker 3: I don't necessarily think that's sort of my Super Bowl ruler.
- 11:40Speaker 3: You gotta dominate up front, and you gotta score touchdowns.
- 11:43Speaker 2: When you have the opportunity.
- 11:45Speaker 3: You know, you can argue that takes weapons, but I
- 11:48Speaker 3: think if you're really good up front, your weapons are better.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And the Broncos are really good upfront on both sides
- 11:54Speaker 3: of the ball, and that gives them probably one of
- 11:58Speaker 3: the best five starting point points in the league for
- 12:02Speaker 3: playing big games and winning big games.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Well, just one thing real quick, sorry, Rob, So, I
- 12:08Speaker 1: was just thinking about this. Their biggest asset is their
- 12:12Speaker 1: defensive line, like they were, the ability to get up
- 12:15Speaker 1: to the quarterback last year. They were the league leader
- 12:18Speaker 1: in zachs And they have two guys, speaking of contracts,
- 12:22Speaker 1: that are probably looking for extensions. Do you think either
- 12:27Speaker 1: of Zach Allen or Nick Benito have a new contract
- 12:29Speaker 1: by week one?
- 12:31Speaker 3: I'm not sure week one for either of those guys
- 12:35Speaker 3: the way things have been conveyed to me. And look,
- 12:37Speaker 3: you know, things change every second in the NFL, and
- 12:40Speaker 3: that's part of the fun of covering it. But I
- 12:45Speaker 3: think Zach Allen's a guy you could get done during
- 12:48Speaker 3: the season, one of those like you know, late in
- 12:51Speaker 3: the year Bowls. You know, we've seen guys sign late
- 12:54Speaker 3: in the season who want to stay just because.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Of the way the cap works. And then Benito, you
- 13:02Speaker 2: know that one.
- 13:03Speaker 3: He is going to want top of the market, and
- 13:05Speaker 3: it's just going to be a matter of if the
- 13:07Speaker 3: Broncos want to pay him at top of the market
- 13:10Speaker 3: before everybody has to do the franchise player dance and
- 13:13Speaker 3: all those things. Now it is different hierarchy, but I
- 13:19Speaker 3: think everybody has to remember an awful lot of players
- 13:23Speaker 3: in Benito's situation, Clady Bowles, Von Miller, Damarius Thomas, I mean,
- 13:33Speaker 3: alwful lot of premier Broncos have gone the brief franchise
- 13:37Speaker 3: player tag mega deal soon after. I think that's the
- 13:42Speaker 3: scenario probably for Benito right now as it stands, lot
- 13:46Speaker 3: could change. You know, they can pull the checkbook out
- 13:50Speaker 3: anytime they want. But I think Sutton is the first
- 13:53Speaker 3: of that group that would get get done with sort
- 13:57Speaker 3: of the urgency you're you're thinking of there.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lagwell at ESPN dot com joins us every single Thursday.
