- 0:01Dr. Bob Lawrence: Hello, and welcome to the Dallas School of Music Minute.
- 0:05Dr. Bob Lawrence: I'm Dr.
- 0:05Dr. Bob Lawrence: Bob Lawrence, Director of the Dallas School of Music.
- 0:09Dr. Bob Lawrence: Today I'd like to talk about independence.
- 0:13Dr. Bob Lawrence: One of the greatest goals of music education is not to create students who always need a teacher.
- 0:20Dr. Bob Lawrence: It's actually to create students who gradually need one less.
- 0:25Dr. Bob Lawrence: At first, students rely heavily on instruction.
- 0:29Dr. Bob Lawrence: They need guidance, encouragement, and frequent correction.
- 0:34Dr. Bob Lawrence: That's exactly how learning begins.
- 0:37Dr. Bob Lawrence: But over time, something remarkable starts to happen.
- 0:42Dr. Bob Lawrence: Students begin noticing mistakes before the teacher points them out.
- 0:46Dr. Bob Lawrence: They ask better questions, they solve musical problems on their own.
- 0:51Dr. Bob Lawrence: They begin making thoughtful musical decisions with confidence.
- 0:56Dr. Bob Lawrence: In other words, they become independent learners.
- 1:00Dr. Bob Lawrence: At the Dallas School of Music, that is one of our most important goals.
- 1:06Dr. Bob Lawrence: We don't simply teach students what to play.
- 1:10Dr. Bob Lawrence: We teach them how to think, how to analyze, how to listen, how to evaluate their own work.
- 1:18Dr. Bob Lawrence: Those skills don't remain in the lesson room.
- 1:22Dr. Bob Lawrence: They become lifelong habits.
- 1:24Dr. Bob Lawrence: Because education is ultimately about developing judgment.
- 1:29Dr. Bob Lawrence: And the most successful students are not the ones who always have the right answers.
- 1:35Dr. Bob Lawrence: They are the ones who know how to find them.
- 1:39Dr. Bob Lawrence: Music provides that opportunity every week.
- 1:42Dr. Bob Lawrence: One thoughtful decision at a time, one independent discovery at a time, one confident musician at a time.
- 1:52Dr. Bob Lawrence: Thanks for spending a minute with me today.
- 1:55Dr. Bob Lawrence: Until next time, enjoy the journey as you continue to discover, learn, and play.
