- 0:11I'm Drew and I'll be your guide to the night sky for the week starting November the 3rd
- 0:17to the 9th.
- 0:18Today's show is going to be a little different from our usual format.
- 0:23Last weekend I attended a star party hosted by my local astronomy club, so I thought it
- 0:29would be fun to take you inside the party where I had the chance to chat with astronomy
- 0:34enthusiasts of all ages from seasoned star gazers to curious newcomers.
- 0:41And later in the show we'll take a look at what you can expect to see in the night sky
- 0:45as we kick off November.
- 0:47So grab a comfortable spot under the night sky and let's get started.
- 0:59Being at a star party is like stepping into a shared dream, a mix of curiosity, excitement,
- 1:06and a touch of nostalgia.
- 1:09Tonight the Midlands Astronomy Club converges at one of their secluded observation sites.
- 1:14The twice yearly gathering is a chance for family, friends, and those curious about the
- 1:20hobby.
- 1:22After an hours drive northward with daylight waning, I arrived at the club's dark sky
- 1:28sanctuary just in time to join the familiar faces that bring these nights to life.
- 1:34Seasoned observers, club veterans, and newcomers.
- 1:39Telescopes of all kinds already point skyward waiting for nightfall.
- 1:44Skies are clear for now, but a front is forecasted to arrive this evening and that could bring
- 1:49clouds or even rain.
- 1:52The real star of the event is the food and will enjoy the cookout even if observation
- 1:57is impossible.
- 2:00Club President Mike Roberts, who normally plans the club's monthly meetings and topics,
- 2:05has one of the most important roles of the night, manning the grill.
- 2:09Ever since I was a kid I've always looked at the sky and that's true of most of us.
- 2:14Most of us have been doing this for our entire life and I just like getting out there and
- 2:18looking, looking at the sky.
- 2:21But it's not just about looking at the stars, it's about sharing that fascination, connecting
- 2:26with others who feel the same pull of the cosmos.
- 2:30Hap Griffin was one of the original members to build an observatory on the site some years
- 2:36ago.
- 2:37It's a chance for people like us that are just enamored by the night sky and getting
- 2:42together with people that are interested in the same things that you are under a really
- 2:49magnificent night sky is just the best.
- 2:53Between Hap's observatory and his neighbor, Frank, an impromptu gathering space is formed.
- 3:00Astronomers huddle together, guitars in hand, sharing melodies and stories beneath the darkening
- 3:06sky.
- 3:07Most of these club members have known each other for years.
- 3:10I'm a relative newcomer but before I knew it someone handed me a guitar and invited
- 3:16me to join in over the murmur of cosmic chatter.
- 3:21The cloud was a big deal because they hadn't really discovered how to do agriculture yet.
- 3:25You know what I mean?
- 3:27So yeah, that was important to them.
- 3:30That's a mega centaurious.
- 3:31That was my next guess because they had that color.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:34That dim copper color around there.
- 3:36But that's with a homemade telescope.
- 3:39I figured that, I ground figured it, polished it and figured it.
- 3:44And that's the scope that I built.
- 3:46It's carbon fiber tube.
- 3:47Wow.
- 3:48F3.9.
- 3:49That's beautiful.
- 3:51As you can guess, it doesn't take long before the talk turns to telescopes.
- 3:55Well, I joined the club when I was 13 or 14 years old.
- 3:59I've been in astronomy since 1985 as a first grader.
- 4:03That's past club president Wes Mein.
- 4:06I started with a department to store telescope from the old service merchandise.
- 4:10You probably remember this in the 80s.
- 4:12It showed me the craters of the moon and I thought only PhD scientists could see that.
- 4:18But that was my ticket.
- 4:20And I just, that telescope, looking back is far inferior to what I own now.
- 4:25But I treated that thing like it was my own low-observatory or monarchy observatory.
- 4:33I just felt like I discovered the moon myself.
- 4:37For many, telescopes are more than tools.
- 4:40They're extensions of a passion for the stars, each scope reflecting its owner's unique
- 4:45story.
- 4:46Okay.
- 4:47The center here gets corrected, color corrected and aberration corrected, bounces off the
- 4:51primary mirror, back toward a mirror mounted in the center of this corrected lens.
- 4:56Amateur astronomer Steve Dornberg takes pride in using what would be deemed a vintage scope
- 5:02nowadays.
- 5:03His blue, gray and gold Dynamax scope looked futuristic in the early 80s, but has since
- 5:10graduated to retro cool status, judging by how many Gawkers he gets when he sets it up.
- 5:17Well, assuming I can keep my optics from fogging up, I'll get my eight-inch Schmitt
- 5:22Cassegrain made by Dynamax, which is no longer in production, out here and we'll take a
- 5:27look at some stars.
- 5:28And this is a...
- 5:30Pesto?
- 5:31This is a Dynamax.
- 5:32It's a competitive Celestron.
- 5:33Okay.
- 5:34It's called Dynamax.
- 5:35It's no longer in business.
- 5:37In an era when most astronomers are using some sort of computer-assisted guiding or a smart
- 5:43scope, Steve relies on methods more in line with the age of his scope, which still renders
- 5:49beautiful views of planets and deep-sky objects.
- 5:53Absolutely.
- 5:54The optics, I mean, I've taken meticulous care of the telescope in the years that I've
- 5:58had it, and it's all about the optics at the end of the day.
- 6:00I don't have a lot of the G-Wiz computer technology because it simply didn't exist when I bought
- 6:04the telescope.
- 6:06But it can track.
- 6:07I do have a...
- 6:08It does have a drive motor on it.
- 6:09It can track if I line it properly.
- 6:11And other than that, I have a Tyrion Epoch 2000 star chart in here that I can look things
- 6:18up.
- 6:19It is not totally current.
- 6:20Some of the stars may have drifted a bit in 24 years, but they should be relatively
- 6:25close.
- 6:26My right ascension and declination may be a bit off of, hey.
- 6:30Across the field, a crowd has lined up to view the setting sun through a solar scope.
- 6:35Look, close one eye, look at the other.
- 6:42There you go.
- 6:43Good to see you.
- 6:44You see the big white ball?
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:46Okay, the big white ball is the sun.
- 6:47Oh.
- 6:48Do you see black spots on it?
- 6:49Yeah, I do.
- 6:50Those are sunspots, and they are bigger.
- 6:51Guests quickly learn that if a scope is pointed at the sky, chances are they'll be invited
- 6:54to peer into it.
- 6:56When you come to a star party, there's going to be generally a number of different types
- 7:00of telescopes to look through if you're trying to get an idea for a telescope that you might
- 7:06want to buy if you're a beginner.
- 7:08It's great to look through a lot of different types of telescopes because there'll be a
- 7:12half a dozen different types of scopes here, and you can see what the pluses and minuses
- 7:16are of each and things like that.
- 7:18So a star party is a great chance to actually kick the tires, so to speak, on other people's
- 7:24equipment, and they're happy for you to look through it or they wouldn't have brought it.

- 7:33All right, repeat the view.
- 7:35Oh, my God.
- 7:37Guests, you need to see that.
- 7:40Yeah, yeah, don't touch anything.
- 7:42For Paul Romanosin, who has been the club's observation chairman for 20 years, education
- 7:48is at the core of the club's mission.
- 7:50Well, one of the things is if you have a telescope for long enough, you need motivation to take
- 7:55it out.
- 7:57So the reason to take it out is to show people stuff.
- 8:00Do you see the ring?

- 8:04It looks like what you're looking at.
- 8:05Did you see the bands on the ring and the...
- 8:07I mean on the...
- 8:08Did you see the little dots on either side?
- 8:09Did you see the moons?
- 8:10Those are the moons, eh?
- 8:11Well, we do programs for schools.
- 8:14We got an outreach that's coming up, two more.
- 8:18We try to do them on the round the first quarter moons, so there's something that's got nice
- 8:23visuals.
- 8:24How you doing?
- 8:31The clouds that were threatening earlier have officially rolled in, covering up the handful
- 8:36of twilight targets that were being studied.
- 8:44But no one is singing the blues.
- 8:47Some of our best star parties have been where it did cloud up, and we just all sat around
- 8:52and talked.
- 8:53And number one, we were supposed to watch a meteor shower, I think, and a bunch of us
- 8:57got together.
- 8:58And it was cloudy.
- 8:59We didn't see a single meteor.
- 9:00But we sat around and talked, and I thought, here are people that know what I'm talking
- 9:05about, and they...
- 9:07And I know what they're talking about.
- 9:09When I mentioned some big technical term or some concept, the fact that they understand
- 9:15what I'm talking about and that they're talking about the same things that I'm talking about,
- 9:19it was just...
- 9:20It was enlightening.
- 9:21It was like, hey, the light went off.
- 9:24I've got to be a part of this forever.
- 9:27Drizzle has begun, and several of us hastily toss our gear into cars and prepare for the
- 9:32long ride home.
- 9:34For most newcomers, the experience has been worth it.
- 9:38I saw Saturn, and I saw the moon right next to Saturn.
- 9:42I am very surprised to see in these telescopes how you're able to see a different side of
- 9:49Saturn.
- 9:50And I also enjoy the solar telescope.
- 9:54That was very surprising.
- 9:55I actually didn't expect to see a spat on the sun.
- 10:00I saw the moon, and I saw the sun earlier.
- 10:03I saw Saturn pretty close.
- 10:04It was pretty unique.
- 10:07The sky to these stargazers is a canvas that stretches into infinity.
- 10:12It's alive with stories that reveal new wonders.
- 10:16Each time they look, they see something new, a brightening star, a comet, or simply the
- 10:22vastness of space itself.
- 10:24The sky is not painted on.
- 10:27It actually has depth and meaning.
- 10:29So if you look at the sky through a telescope or a pair of binoculars, and then you increase
- 10:35the magnification on it, you're going to see farther out.
- 10:39You're always going to be able to see more.
- 10:41And there's stuff happening out there all the time, and stars are getting brighter, and
- 10:46they're getting darker, and they're moving, and they're doing all kinds of things.
- 10:50And so the sky is really a never-ending source of fascination.
- 10:56There's a lot of stuff going on out there.
- 11:05Here it's rarely just about what you see.
- 11:09It's the moments of shared wonder and the camaraderie that binds them together, under
- 11:14a sky that feels a little less vast when shared with others.

- 11:52This first week of November promises to be great for early evening stargazing sessions,
- 11:58as the moon's faint crescent and early set times allow for dark skies by mid-evening.
- 12:04Also, daylight saving time ended today for observers in North America, so we have an
- 12:10extra hour of evening darkness for stargazing.
- 12:14Hopefully, you didn't bank on seeing the so-called Halloween Comet C2024S1.
- 12:23Astronomers were predicting this one to be bright enough for daylight viewing, and then,
- 12:28as comets sometimes do, it was vaporized on its trip around the sun.
- 12:34Flying as close as 850,000 miles away from the sun, this comet was considered a sun-grazer.
- 12:42Maybe they should have called it Icarus.
- 12:46Comet C2023A3 Sushenshin Atlas is still out there, but it's fading fast.
- 12:54You may still be able to catch it with binoculars in a dark western sky for another week or
- 12:59so.
- 13:06On November 4, the moon will be in a thin, waxing crescent phase, creating a beautiful
- 13:12sight in the southwestern sky alongside Venus, appearing about 45 minutes after sunset.
- 13:19Venus will be just a few degrees above the moon, providing a striking view for early
- 13:24evening observers.
- 13:26The moon will be at first quarter by the end of the week, so if you're out moon-watching,
- 13:32scan your scope or binoculars along the terminator.
- 13:35That's the dividing line of night and day on the moon, to catch detail in 3D relief.
- 13:43The torrid meteor shower will be visible from now until mid-month.
- 13:47Known for producing a few bright fireballs, the torrids are best observed around midnight.
- 13:54Although not as prolific as other meteor showers, it can reveal about 5 to 15 meteors per hour
- 14:00under ideal conditions.
- 14:03Venus is low in the southwestern sky after sunset and bright, gradually setting about
- 14:082 hours after the sun as it moves eastward through Ophiuchus.
- 14:14Saturn will be visible in the south after sunset, situated in Aquarius.
- 14:19The ringed planet's position makes it a reliable sight for early evening viewing.
- 14:25Jupiter rises later in the east near the constellation Taurus, shining brightly throughout the night.
- 14:31Its proximity to the Pleiades starcluster and Aldebaran, the Eye of Taurus, adds extra
- 14:38allure to the view.
- 14:40Mars will begin its ascent around midnight, showing its reddish hue as it moves closer
- 14:46to Earth.
- 14:56This time of year offers up some classic deep sky objects loved by both new and veteran
- 15:02stargazers.
- 15:05First up is the Andromeda Galaxy M31, the closest large galaxy to our Milky Way.
- 15:13In dark skies, you can spot it with the naked eye as a faint oblong smudge high in the northeast
- 15:19after sunset.
- 15:21With binoculars or a small telescope, you'll see more structure and appreciate the grandeur
- 15:26of our neighboring galaxy, located more than 2 million light years away.
- 15:32To find it, start with the constellation Cassiopeia, shaped like a W, and guide your view right
- 15:39toward the Andromeda constellation nearby.
- 15:43Another highlight is the Pleiades starcluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, which rises
- 15:49in the eastern evening sky within the constellation Taurus.
- 15:54The cluster looks like a small, misty dipper to the naked eye, and through binoculars,
- 16:00its individual blue stars shine beautifully against the dark sky.
- 16:05It's easy to find near the bright orange star Aldebaran.
- 16:10Orion, rising later in the night, brings us the breathtaking Orion nebula, M42, located
- 16:17just below Orion's famous belt.
- 16:21Even without any equipment, you'll see a soft glow in Orion's sword, and through binoculars,
- 16:27M42 reveals itself as a cloud of gas and dust, a stellar nursery where new stars are born.
- 16:35The nebula is one of the easiest and brightest deep sky objects to observe, making it a favorite
- 16:41during the late night and early morning hours.
- 16:44Finally, don't miss the double cluster in Perseus, located between Perseus and Cassiopeia.
- 16:52This pair of neighboring starclusters glows faintly to the naked eye, but reveals a stunning
- 16:57array of bright blue stars and binoculars.
- 17:01It's a treat on crisp autumn nights, and it's easily accessible from northern skies.
