- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And Samantha.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff Now I've Told You, a production
- 0:08Speaker 1: of iHeartRadio. And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
- 0:21Speaker 1: As always, if you're choosing to drink or whatever you're
- 0:23Speaker 1: choosing to do, please do so responsibly. Samantha, are you
- 0:26Speaker 1: sipping on anything?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Bubble water, because we're recording a lot today.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We are recording a lot. We're preparing... To go on
- 0:34Speaker 1: a voyage.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Voyage.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yes. And by the time you hear this, we'll be
- 0:40Speaker 1: back from said voyage. But the time of recording has
- 0:47Speaker 1: not happened yet. So this is really interesting because this
- 0:52Speaker 1: topic was a suggestion for our voyage from a listener,
- 0:59Speaker 1: friend of the show, Lena. Yeah. Please write in if
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm mispronouncing that. I know you wrote in once about
- 1:05Speaker 1: how to pronounce her name, and I can't find that
- 1:07Speaker 1: email again. Please write in if I've got it wrong.
- 1:10Speaker 1: But Lena suggested a couple of ideas for our voyage,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and one of them caught my eye. Well, actually, both
- 1:20Speaker 1: of them did, but one of them was more intensive.
- 1:23Speaker 1: This one I thought would just be a fun conversation,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and that's about couples' costumes. So as we're recording this now,
- 1:30Speaker 1: it's still... september september 22nd so we haven't gotten into
- 1:34Speaker 1: october yet but you know by the time this comes
- 1:37Speaker 1: out yeah halloween full swing and i just thought that
- 1:41Speaker 1: was a really interesting question because lena basically asked like
- 1:45Speaker 1: are they sexy or cute are they clever overdone what
- 1:50Speaker 1: are your thoughts so i thought we could have that
- 1:52Speaker 1: conversation here and luckily we I'm so glad that I
- 1:57Speaker 1: brought it up when we were talking to Bridget recently.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And Bridget had some thoughts.
- 2:03Speaker 2: She did. And they were all very different from mine. Yes.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I will say you were probably different than both of us.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We'll get into kind of our thoughts in a second.
- 2:15Speaker 1: What I'm going to start with is that I have
- 2:17Speaker 1: done couples costumes. I've also done group costumes. And this
- 2:22Speaker 1: is what I kind of want to get into in
- 2:24Speaker 1: a minute is kind of the implication of like a
- 2:27Speaker 1: romantic couple when it says couples costumes. I have done
- 2:32Speaker 1: one of those. And I was the Winter Soldier and
- 2:36Speaker 1: the guy I was dating was Captain America. I don't
- 2:40Speaker 1: think he was super into it. But I also didn't
- 2:44Speaker 1: make him do like, he basically just wore a jacket.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Like a specific type of jacket. We looked really good.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We have a great couple's photo with it. But I
- 2:58Speaker 1: think that's the only time I've done it in a
- 2:59Speaker 1: romantic sense. I did do it with a friend, a
- 3:02Speaker 1: good friend of mine, to DragonCon. We went as, she
- 3:06Speaker 1: went as Astrid, who we've done an episode on, a
- 3:09Speaker 1: fictional woman around the world. And I went as Hiccup
- 3:11Speaker 1: from How to Train Your Dragon. And we looked good.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You were there that year. You and your partner were there.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And your partner tried to take photos of us, but
- 3:20Speaker 1: Dragon Con's notoriously not a great place to take photos. No. Yeah.
- 3:25Speaker 1: But that's pretty much my experience with the couple's costume.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I mean, I guess you and I have done, like,
- 3:33Speaker 1: joke onesies before.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. But we didn't do it, like, Halloween. We
- 3:40Speaker 2: did it for staying at home.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, we were, like, separate but together in this way. Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. It was New Year's?
- 3:50Speaker 1: New Year's.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Well, what about you? Have you done?
- 3:56Speaker 2: So, here's a negative Nancy of it all, and I
- 4:01Speaker 2: apologize to all the Nancys, but that's the phrase I know.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I hate costumes. Mainly because, and I've said this before,
- 4:12Speaker 2: this is one of those many things, this is one
- 4:15Speaker 2: of the part of the, like, accumulation of why I
- 4:18Speaker 2: don't love the holidays, birthdays, all of these things. The
- 4:22Speaker 2: layer of expectations that are with this, and maybe it's
- 4:26Speaker 2: because I am jealous of my friends who are really
- 4:29Speaker 2: good at costuming, who are really good at being creative,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and or have the money to be creative. And it
- 4:36Speaker 2: wasn't until recently, so let's say right before COVID, that
- 4:40Speaker 2: I started getting a little extra money. And by that point,
- 4:43Speaker 2: we weren't going out anywhere. I'm definitely not going out anywhere.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And also the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on
- 4:49Speaker 2: a costume hurts my heart. Hurts my heart. So with
- 4:55Speaker 2: all of that said, it just became a thing where
- 4:58Speaker 2: I don't feel like I'm creative enough to get a costume.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And I may have a great idea, but it never
- 5:07Speaker 2: comes to play. And I'm like, yeah, that did not
- 5:09Speaker 2: work out like I thought it would. So those layers
- 5:12Speaker 2: of expectations and then the default of, like, I have
- 5:15Speaker 2: to do these things, and then also realizing going to
- 5:19Speaker 2: no longer, I'd no longer go to Target, but once
- 5:22Speaker 2: upon a time to Target to find these costumes that,
- 5:24Speaker 2: once again, are too ridiculously expensive. I just can't stand it.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I will say I am a lazy costumer, once again,
- 5:34Speaker 2: in this realm of, like, I hate and I'm not
- 5:37Speaker 2: creative enough. So I bought Jack-o'-lantern shirts. So I love
- 5:42Speaker 2: easy go-tos. So you just mentioned the onesies. Easy go-tos. Onesies, great.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I'm a panda bear. Don't touch my tail. T-shirts, wonderful.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I'm going to find, and I did find headbands that
- 5:54Speaker 2: had like the pumpkin tops, the jack-o'-lantern tops to look
- 5:58Speaker 2: like a jack-o'-lantern. And then I will match. I made
- 6:01Speaker 2: my partner get a onesie. He was a shark. Actually,
- 6:03Speaker 2: that's not true. He's the one that wanted to match me. Yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 2: because I was like, okay, you can do whatever you want. Sure.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Sure.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And he came as a shark while I came as
- 6:13Speaker 2: a panda. The only matching thing was we were species
- 6:18Speaker 2: and we were onesies. So obviously nothing too much. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: then because we were going to a Halloween party and
- 6:25Speaker 2: my friend, friend of the show, old co-host Caroline, who love, love,
- 6:30Speaker 2: loves Halloween, super, super creative, super fun, all of those
- 6:35Speaker 2: things that I am not, once again, fun included. She
- 6:39Speaker 2: was having a party. She's like, you have to at
- 6:40Speaker 2: least dress up something. So I came as a jack-o'-lantern
- 6:44Speaker 2: with a t-shirt. And my partner, he got one too
- 6:48Speaker 2: with a hat. So we were matching jack-o'-lanterns in the
- 6:51Speaker 2: most lazy way that you can be.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah. So that was fine. But I was like the trail,
- 7:01Speaker 2: the lead up to that one, the lead up to
- 7:04Speaker 2: that one and trying to figure out what to be
- 7:07Speaker 2: and then trying to have My partner helped to make
- 7:10Speaker 2: a decision was work. And finally, I just made a choice.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And I was like, I don't care what you think here.
- 7:17Speaker 2: He's like, okay, you want to do this? I was like,
- 7:18Speaker 2: don't complain. Don't want to be more creative because you
- 7:21Speaker 2: did not put input. This is you. And I think that's, again, like,
- 7:25Speaker 2: he's not awful about that. Usually we are really, like,
- 7:29Speaker 2: equal or he's sometimes more invested. But he's just not
- 7:33Speaker 2: a procrastinator. He's an ADHD-er. That's hyper-focused and then kind
- 7:38Speaker 2: of forgets about what's going on and then comes back
- 7:40Speaker 2: with like, oh, crap.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I need to do this type of conversation. And I'm like, well,
- 7:45Speaker 2: it's too late. And so I'm the one who ends
- 7:47Speaker 2: up doing the things. And that drives me crazy. And
- 7:50Speaker 2: that also makes me miserable. So all of those things
- 7:53Speaker 2: come into I hate couples costumes, period. I like the
- 7:58Speaker 2: idea of it.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I do like the idea. I love when people are
- 8:04Speaker 2: doing it and they look good and they put time.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I love that you're creative. I'm very, again, envious and
- 8:10Speaker 2: jealous of those who can do it well. Katie, friend
- 8:16Speaker 2: of the show, who is amazing at her creativity and
- 8:20Speaker 2: makes the best costumes, shocked. I love everything. I do
- 8:24Speaker 2: not have those skills. So I don't love doing it.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Those are my opinions. Very strong ones at that.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It's so funny because I feel like hearing you talk
- 8:39Speaker 1: about it, you're putting like way too much on it
- 8:41Speaker 1: that I... Probably.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But when you come, think about the fact that you
- 8:48Speaker 2: had your, well, first of all, all of your costumes
- 8:51Speaker 2: were intensive. And every time you're in the middle of
- 8:53Speaker 2: making it, you tell me how stressed you are because
- 8:56Speaker 2: there's something didn't work out. You have to redo something.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You're waiting for something or you're trying to glue something
- 9:03Speaker 2: back together. And then you stay in those costumes for
- 9:06Speaker 2: the next five years because you put so much time
- 9:09Speaker 2: and effort into it. I don't think I'm putting as much.
- 9:12Speaker 1: As you do. I feel, and this is kind of
- 9:15Speaker 1: a distinction, a very telling distinction perhaps, but I don't,
- 9:19Speaker 1: Halloween costumes, I don't put that much in. Okay. Dragon Con, yes,
- 9:26Speaker 1: because there used to be a real air of judgment.
- 9:30Speaker 1: around if you just purchase something. I think that that
- 9:35Speaker 1: has lessened now. I think it's still there, but I
- 9:39Speaker 1: think because it's gotten so much bigger, it's not what
- 9:42Speaker 1: it used to be. But back when I first started going,
- 9:45Speaker 1: there was a huge, like, that has a faux pas
- 9:49Speaker 1: if you just bought this. So you had to put
- 9:51Speaker 1: in the effort. You had to, like, build the thing
- 9:53Speaker 1: or whatever it was. Halloween, I'll just, like, show up.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I'll show up in, like, the most basic... kind of
- 10:01Speaker 1: suggestion of something.
- 10:03Speaker 2: But also you have a closet i do a closet
- 10:06Speaker 2: where you can just go back and be like i'll
- 10:09Speaker 2: just do this and then put it together i don't
- 10:11Speaker 2: have such.
- 10:12Speaker 1: A thing this is true i do have that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'm looking at her closet now yes everyone She has
- 10:19Speaker 2: a jacket ready to be Han and Luke in The
- 10:26Speaker 2: Last of Us.
- 10:27Speaker 1: A million jackets. I literally have a jacket for, that's
- 10:32Speaker 1: all I have to put on is the jacket.
- 10:34Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. You're always, because also a part
- 10:38Speaker 2: of that is you're always low-key dressing up. Yes, I
- 10:41Speaker 2: love low-key cosplay. This is that other sentiment.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:46Speaker 2: You're already prepared for it.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I am. But I feel like the last time I
- 10:50Speaker 1: went to a Halloween party, not Caroline's, because we did
- 10:54Speaker 1: go to Caroline's. I can't remember what I wore for that.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You were a Luke of sorts.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I'm sure I was. That makes sense.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Because there was a Hans, and you two talked. Oh.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Oh, well, before that, I just went, I went as
- 11:15Speaker 1: a version of Taylor Swift and I was just wearing
- 11:18Speaker 1: like a bathing suit and shorts and that was it.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And it was like close enough, you know, I didn't
- 11:23Speaker 1: put that much work into it.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Again, it's also those creative ones, like people were like,
- 11:30Speaker 2: you know, the spice rack and they just put, or
- 11:32Speaker 2: the spice rolls and they put like, I'm like, no,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I can't even make that. When I tell you I
- 11:37Speaker 2: have no arts and crafts skills, I really have no
- 11:39Speaker 2: arts and crafts. I'm not even, like, being a pessimist.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I really don't have those skills. I wish I did.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You have a few. Not really. The ones that I can, like,
- 11:51Speaker 2: actually follow directions.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Very explicit directions. Then I might do okay. I still
- 12:00Speaker 2: color very much outside the lines. I was like, yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 2: that still looks like a third grader did that one.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Not even a very good one.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Well, I have some of your creative efforts in my
- 12:13Speaker 1: home and I enjoy them and I think they're good.
- 12:16Speaker 2: My partner looked at one of those and said, what
- 12:17Speaker 2: is this supposed to be? And I had to explain it.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Well, that's up for interpretation. Art is interpretive.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I know.
- 12:37Speaker 1: But one of the things I wanted to talk about
- 12:40Speaker 1: here is, so Bridget did have a very different take
- 12:44Speaker 1: than you.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yes, she loves it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: She loves it. And they have a, her and her
- 12:49Speaker 1: partner have a Google Doc. They start like a month
- 12:52Speaker 1: in advance to plan. And I was so endeared by that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I thought it was so adorable. And she said it
- 13:01Speaker 1: was like a deal breaker. Like if you're not willing
- 13:03Speaker 1: to participate in this, get out. Essentially. And so I
- 13:10Speaker 1: loved hearing that take on it. I'm very excited. I
- 13:13Speaker 1: really hope she sends me pictures from their planned, I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: not going to spoil it, but their planned couple's costume
- 13:20Speaker 1: this year. But this is my thing. And I did
- 13:25Speaker 1: try to research this and look into people's thoughts about it.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I think that couple's costumes, as long as they're It
- 13:36Speaker 1: seems like both people, like there's not one miserable person
- 13:40Speaker 1: that clearly doesn't want to be doing it. I think
- 13:43Speaker 1: they're cute. I think they can be sexy. I think
- 13:45Speaker 1: they can be really funny. There are really, really funny
- 13:49Speaker 1: couples costumes. And as I was telling Samantha and Bridget,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think there are some costumes that just work better
- 13:56Speaker 1: as a couple's costume because you might not recognize the
- 14:00Speaker 1: one person alone. But when you see the two characters together...
- 14:05Speaker 1: then you get it. So that's kind of my opinion
- 14:10Speaker 1: on them. I do love them. And I was thinking about,
- 14:18Speaker 1: because I've been in a lot of group costumes, I've
- 14:21Speaker 1: been in couples costumes, but not romantically. And that got
- 14:25Speaker 1: me thinking about queer couples and how it looks for them.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And then I found this list from Autostraddle about it
- 14:32Speaker 1: and the best queer couple costumes and I think those
- 14:38Speaker 1: you know some of that involves gender gender bending which
- 14:42Speaker 1: is when you know make a character the opposite gender
- 14:45Speaker 1: than they are but I really like that too like
- 14:49Speaker 1: I like like if I had been black when I
- 14:53Speaker 1: was doing Winter Soldier all the time and I had
- 14:55Speaker 1: a a woman like a friend who played Steve Rogers
- 14:59Speaker 1: I think that would have been fun I think that
- 15:01Speaker 1: would have been really cool yeah that would have been
- 15:03Speaker 1: amazing Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 2: You can still do it. You still have that costume.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I do still have that costume. That one is a
- 15:10Speaker 1: pain to put on. But it also, I hate to
- 15:16Speaker 1: retire it because I did, that one I did put
- 15:18Speaker 1: a lot of work into. Mm-hmm. It has four arms,
- 15:22Speaker 1: four winter soldier arms that I still have all of them,
- 15:26Speaker 1: but the fourth one is the best one.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I remember.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yeah. But I just think that, I don't know, I
- 15:32Speaker 1: kind of like that the, Couples' costume for me so
- 15:35Speaker 1: long has been kind of the straight couples' costume. But
- 15:40Speaker 1: now it's very much expanded. And it's even kind of
- 15:44Speaker 1: expanded outside of that to be you and your friend
- 15:48Speaker 1: doing this. And as I said, some of them are hilarious.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And I recommend looking them up.
- 15:55Speaker 2: You know, some of the costumes that I love even more,
- 15:58Speaker 2: group costumes.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Me too.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Group costumes are awesome. So, like, I had a friend
- 16:04Speaker 2: who lived with, like, four other people, and their entire
- 16:08Speaker 2: house would be different things. Stranger Things was a big one.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I think they did Drag Queen, the drag show. Is
- 16:14Speaker 2: that the one?
- 16:15Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 16:17Speaker 2: RuPaul's Drag. Wow. Oh. Man, I just had him up.
- 16:21Speaker 2: RuPaul's Drag, like, they brought in different queens, and they were, like,
- 16:25Speaker 2: these are all gay men, so they were, like, dressing
- 16:27Speaker 2: up as that and having the best time. Like, I
- 16:29Speaker 2: think those are really... fun times I did one of
- 16:33Speaker 2: my best costumes is probably offensive and I apologize to
- 16:37Speaker 2: all of y'all it was what it was I was
- 16:40Speaker 2: kind of digging into my roots and my accent of
- 16:42Speaker 2: being country bumpkin essentially and I had the you know
- 16:48Speaker 2: missing tooth I had the best Fabio romance novel written
- 16:53Speaker 2: by Fabio supposedly uh-huh it was amazing and then the
- 16:57Speaker 2: war like all I did was have rollers cigarettes flip-flops
- 17:02Speaker 2: in this robe and I love that and for some
- 17:05Speaker 2: reason I did it again the next year because I
- 17:08Speaker 2: was like it was easy it was funny I was
- 17:09Speaker 2: really into character onto that one and I had people
- 17:12Speaker 2: joining me I didn't ask them to join me they
- 17:14Speaker 2: joined me and they would just be like you're my
- 17:15Speaker 2: common-law wife I'm like I don't know you I do
- 17:17Speaker 2: know them they were my friends and then this random
- 17:19Speaker 2: person came through being like the son I was like
- 17:21Speaker 2: what is happening they added themselves to my.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Group that is fun too with uh costumes.
- 17:31Speaker 2: When making friends with strangers because they dress either in
- 17:34Speaker 2: that same group or like in that same genre or
- 17:37Speaker 2: the same character yeah it's fun oh.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah and i know we've done episodes about this and
- 17:45Speaker 1: i don't think anybody listening needs to a reminder but
- 17:48Speaker 1: i would say also if you're doing a couple's costume
- 17:52Speaker 1: that is cringe for racist reasons or something.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Like that that's not cool that's not.
- 17:58Speaker 1: But otherwise, I'm on board. I think as long as
- 18:03Speaker 1: the people involved, I hate seeing a couple's costume where
- 18:08Speaker 1: like it feels like they're arguing.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Oh, as in like they're arguing in real life, but
- 18:13Speaker 2: they're in a couple's costume?
- 18:15Speaker 1: Like, it feels like clearly one of them was dragged
- 18:18Speaker 1: there and didn't want to do this and thinks it's embarrassing.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And actually, you brought up the episode of The Office
- 18:23Speaker 1: when we were talking about that.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I did.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Where Jim and Pam, Pam really wanted this like family costume,
- 18:31Speaker 1: but Jim was like too cool to do it, even
- 18:33Speaker 1: though it was important for her.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Obviously.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And then he eventually did do it because she had
- 18:38Speaker 1: like this horrible day. But like that situation where I
- 18:42Speaker 1: see a couple that it's like, it feels like an
- 18:46Speaker 1: argument is happening, even if no words are being said.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't like that. But otherwise.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Yeah, show us the creative ones so I can be jealous.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yes, please. If you're doing one, if you have one
- 19:00Speaker 1: that you've seen that you loved, for this episode, I

- 19:06Speaker 1: having a good time. And by the way, a friend
- 19:08Speaker 1: of the show, Katie, who we mentioned, she's going with
- 19:13Speaker 1: her boyfriend next year as Zool and Rick Moranis' character
- 19:20Speaker 1: from Ghostbusters. Sometimes you have to also take into account, like,
- 19:24Speaker 1: how much does somebody want to dress up? And sometimes
- 19:28Speaker 1: the answer is Rick Moran as this character from Ghostbusters.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And that's fine. That's fine. But yeah, let us know
- 19:37Speaker 1: if this is something you're doing, if you've seen some faves.
