- Ranch Wives: This is your Trinity Fairy. It is actually called AG Expert. Like AG is an agricultural expert. And that's the program that we use. it's specifically credit accounting. It is the ⁓ AG Expert. All right ladies, we've got our first Q &A. We had a bunch of people send in some questions for us to answer. So we're probably going to split this into like two parts. Yeah. Because we actually had quite a lot of questions. Yeah, we did. And some of them are going to take a while to answer. Some might take a while, some might not. Yeah. don't know. OK, our first question. Why we don't keep bulls? Like from our commercial herd? Yes. Like why? So the question was, bulls are so expensive. yeah. Why don't you keep bull ⁓ and like have your own bull to use? A, it would be related to half your cow herd. Yes. That would be problematic. ⁓ B, they're for a high quality so then your cows come out. So if you have a high quality bull that's shaped like in good shape, ⁓ good weight. your cows and your calf crop will be substantially more. Yeah. Okay, so I'm going to throw this in here. We actually do occasionally keep sons. So we'll buy a registered bull. Yeah. or whatever, like buy a good herd bull. And if we really like him, we'll keep a couple sons out of our, if our best cows throw a son from him. And then you'll keep it? We'll keep it for two years. Yeah. But you have to be so good at tracking everything. So when we do that, we will make sure that they're not related. That's why we only keep for generally two years. Sometimes three, but it's... to split which way the cows go because a bunch of the cows will be related. Exactly. So for example, last year we had a bunch of our own bulls that were out of a trask bull. And so we had four sons for... So last year was the last year that they were with us. So they were with us for two years and we kept them, but they were L animals. So... those bulls had to go with our main herd and not our young herd because that would have been all of their sisters and whatever. So we just have to, if you track it, you can. But that's how we cut our expenses occasionally because we had to. Not always, it just, depends. Yeah, it depends. Depends on the year. A lot of times when I've seen it done, they don't do a very good job and the bulls are ugly. And then their calf crops are skinny and little and they don't sell well. So you're better off to get your high quality bull for your 20 to $40,000. Yeah. Because then your calf crop is selling for more. Ours actually did pretty good, but their dad was like a ten out of ten You didn't just keep running. No. Commercials through no no no yeah like we we did pretty good and Three out of the four looked really good one was one sorry the other one it looked good But it was a little bit more feminine, so we didn't keep it He wasn't our favorite, but he also wasn't the most active either. so it does depend Yeah, and like we kept um In some sense it can bite you in the butt. We kept a herford bull out of a won because we lost that Creech bull season after we bought him. We only got half a season out of before he popped his hip out. So we kept one of his sons that year the following spring, but turns out he's got really bad feet. we call them Boris. His feet didn't look that bad as a yearling. Yeah. But as we wintered him, his feet got worse. So it was one of those things. So you can do it. Yeah. But I wouldn't say it's your average operational thing, especially if you're not tracking, because you have to be on that. sometimes cheap doesn't. Cheap doesn't fix it. One, cheap doesn't end up being cheaper. No, it doesn't. Yeah. No, I totally agree. It doesn't provide. Yeah, like the good quality calves that you want. Yeah, no. So then and sometimes it is worth it, in my opinion, to buy the more expensive bull, especially if you're trying to get rid of genetics or traits. Yes. Yeah, I agree. I agree. know, the hundred thousand dollar bull that yeah, you're not genetics, probably can do just as well as. Good genetics in like a 30 I you have to scale it to your operation though. Yeah. Because if you're selling, like if you're a bull breeder, you're selling your bulls for 20 grand. And it'll depend if you're running commercial or if you're running registered. Do you guys? you'll have to up your. Yeah. So we buy registered. We buy registered registered, but we don't register. Yeah. That's same with us. Ours is all thats typically most people. Yeah. You buy a registered bull, but. But you can, think there is something to buy and register, like for us, like we were willing to spend a bit more on a bull because we had traits that we didn't want in our herd that we're trying to breed out. So like, for example, we, cause we have so much bushland, we have a lot of bad cases of foot rot. Yeah. It's some years on wet years and they're grazing, you can guarantee somebody's coming out with foot rot. Yeah. ⁓ So we've been looking like we're looking at bulls with good feet and their mom's good feet, like because we've had such bad feet issues. The other thing with registered bulls is it's tracked. is tracked. Everything is tracked. Everything's documented. Yeah. Because to register, you have to have all of the information. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Here's the question on this topic. This is more a me question than the actual question. Do you guys look just strictly at EPDs or do you? look at like what that bull looks like. ⁓ what they look like. Yeah. Quite a bit. We do both, but like we had some that looked super good on paper and then you go and look at them and you're like... Like calving ease and then birth weights. that your main EPDs That's what we, yeah. That's right. think ours, well ours is, yeah, weight, birth weight. ⁓ We do on claw score too, but again, we have feet issues, so we're like looking for good feet. And if they look good too. Yeah, because sometimes your EPDs could be so good and yet they look raggedy or like they look feminine or that kind of thing. So there's something to that too. Okay, second question. How did the fires affect us? and the crazy weather the last few years. How has that affected us? Our operations? fires haven't really affected us. They've affected you more than They've us a lot. So in 2023, spring of 2023, May of 2023, we had a fire. So it was Fire Central up here. Yeah, it was. Like out by you guys. We had one like, but it was like 15 miles away or something. Like people were like, oh, it's coming. And we were like, no. No, we're fine. We were still going to the neighbors to help them fight fire. Yes, exactly. Yeah, because it wasn't at your doorstep. Yeah, so you guys were like support for others. the panic of like, oh my goodness, our house we helping the neighbors, but... Yeah. So I think David was out here. Yeah. Yeah, Jorim came. There was a of you guys that came and gave us a hand. So that year the fires were crazy, like Red Creek was on fire, all up north was like on fire. Prespatou was also on fire, that's right. You guys were surrounded. We were, it was a bit much. was very over- so I, my stepdad is a firefighter. I grew up in a firefighting household. Bushfire and being out here is very different. then structure fire. Like, yeah, he was deputy chief. was like we had rules in the house, that almost all went out the window when that fire showed up on our doorstep. So we were in the field up north picking rocks, my favorite, and roots getting ready for seed. And we watched the fire light up. We watched it go from just a little bit of smoke. Was it a lightning? No, some, if I remember correctly, somebody started like an old car and it sparked and lit. Don't know. I think it was a kid. lit an old car or something or whatever like tried to roll over a new something yeah something like that happened and then ⁓ so we were in the hayfield and i was like ⁓ yeah that fire's like coming towards like i i have pictures of when that fire started i sent it in the hayfield ⁓ this was the weekend that my cousin got married that i didn't go to this was the first like big family event that i did not go to ⁓ i was just watching it burn and so i remember being like okay so what What do here? Yeah, what do you do? So you know it's burning towards you. Yeah. Nothing was done. There is no fire services out here for Your other problem is that for Trinity and I, we have farmers surrounding us. So when there's a fire coming, somebody or like... Everybody has a disc. Ten of them show up with their disc and you disc up the entire field. Yes. Because you can stop And then you have a fire barrier. Yeah. You guys can't. What are you going to with the bush? Yeah. Well, so that was... are all bush. We are all bush. So that's the other thing is once the fire got past us, it's a lot... It's more... It's not a lot. It's a lot of bush, but a lot of like homes and farms and things like that. Not farms, but like... homesteads, you know what mean? Like a lot of smaller acreages. So it's a lot harder to fight when it gets in that situation. a lot of little homesteads like around here. Yes. It's not like, there's plenty until it gets to my house. because a lot of it is bush. So once it's in the bush, ⁓ of luck. You can't. No, so we watched it burn. We got prepped that night. And remember Dave was just like, my father-in-law was just like, do you like picking? And I was like, we... You're stressed. Yeah, I was. I like... I remember I could see it light up from like, Cecil Lake I saw the smoke and I was like... And it just kept getting worse. So, okay, hold on, rewind like two years. We had a huge windstorm out here. I think everybody got it. But there was like twisted. was super bad. It was like really bad here. And then at our place, it was bad, but it wasn't that bad. No, like out in Buick, along the blueberry, it took out like an entire like trail. People say, I believe it was closer, the closest we'll ever see to a tornado. this way because things were like we watched trees up and twist. with that all being said, when that windstorm had come through, my father-in-law was on the phone with like ministry and stuff like that like, guys, you better get in here and clean this up because this is going to be a fire hazard. Because trees were laid out flat everywhere, just crisscrossing. couldn't get in there our cows couldn't graze, whatever. Like it was, it was a mess. And so, and so he had said that and nothing ever came of it. He called ⁓ That's the one thing about Dave. Dave will be willing to be like, hey, this is actually a problem. This is going to be a problem. You might want to look into it. Hey, there was a fire here. Maybe we should clean up. Yes. All this old tree. How do we set it up? No. So the fire lit up. We watch it. We're just like picking rocks and everybodys chill. And I was stressed. was like texting, hey, do you have supplies? That kind of thing. ⁓ so by the time we got back in from picking rocks, One of the Mennonite Community, somebody in the mennonite Community had seen it also. They came and dropped off a water trailer, just dropped it in our yard, just tanks of water. And my dad and his buddy came out, they dropped off hoses and tanks and we filled everything. We got our truck, like the water tank full and the pump going there. And so that night at like... think it was three o'clock, we got a knock on the door to evacuate. I didn't know you weren't supposed to answer the door. I thought it was his dad, because it was banging. So I was like, ⁓ no, this fire has picked up. Something's happened. So I just assumed it was his dad. I went and answered the door. And it wasn't. was like search and rescue emergency services. supposed to answer the door. No, because then they flag you for not leaving. So you're better off just to not answer because supposedly, I don't know. This is what I was told. Allegedly. that's what I was told. So anyways, I answered not knowing. if you have kids, you have. That's a whole nother. Yeah, we have a topic on that too. Yeah. So they came and I was like, well, we're in middle of calving. That was the other thing. We were calving. We couldn't just. Yes, you have cows. was like May 18th, something like that. prime calving like we're in our prime weekend calving and that lights up so you can't just leave because that's the other thing everybody's like oh just go to town go to leave i'm like and do and leave my entire livelihood also like that's what pays my bills you can't just leave for of the fires that went around even in cecil lake it was the community it was the community it was the community that saved everyone yes I could not agree more with that the and the neighbors that pulled together in a way there were so many fires that year that yeah I think the ministry and forestry was spread so thin. They didn't even come out to the Good Low One. They didn't, no. Until like the third day. Yeah, they had it out. It was gonna burn my uncle's place down and they put it out. like half a mile from his house, they got it out. Yeah. they were more up the highway. Yeah. They were up north. Like all of Which is also crazy. And I get there's like a lot of... just leave. We'll look after it. Yeah. Like no, no, their house would have burnt. Yeah. Everything would have burnt. It actually... You can't do it all. No. It actually made my blood boil. Some of the politics that happened in that. the next morning, obviously we didn't evacuate the next morning. We went out behind Augustine's to fight it before it crossed the tracks. and we're like putting out hot spots, there isn't, there was nothing out there. if forestry, in my opinion, I just lost an earring. In my opinion, if forestry would have come out in the morning, it wasn't windy, nothing had like picked up, whatever, they could have had it out. There was a perfect field in there that they could have just done. It would have been dealt with before it into the bush majorly. The wind picked up at like, was a Saturday. Yeah, because that whole week David had been out fighting fire Saturday it started the Good Low and then all of sudden, Saturday it started, everybody came out here. Sunday everybody came. Yes. Yeah. So because on Monday there was that big alert that went out for town. anyways, they came. We had, it was in our field. we'd come back around, in the time that it took us to get back around the tracks up through here, dad's calling saying the grazing tenure on fire, like it's jumped the tracks, grazing tenure on fire. ⁓ So got neighbors, we had the Mennonite community. That's the other thing, the Mennonites here, we're here at 5.30 that Sunday morning to come help us fight. We had a huge community here and had it not been from them. for them. We would have been in a lot worse trouble. Wasn't there a bunch of people that brought CATS There were people from town that were hauling out here Great Northern Bridge Works hauled a cat out here. Rogers hauled their cat out here. ⁓ There was a water service, I can't remember the water service's name, they hauled out here. ⁓ There's the Hampels, their water service hall. There was so many people out here. And I will never forget, as terrifying as that was, it was absolutely amazing to see the community come together. The mennonite Ladies, families came out and fed us huge. They brought us a bunch of food because that was the last thing on anybody's mind was food. ⁓ I remember just thinking like, holy smokes. then we were, so they told us when we got to this bush in the grazing tenure that we could go in there and fight it up to that bush. So Dave was in there with a neighbor and a disk if I remember correctly. Yeah, he was in there with Mike and, was fine. And. Keith was bringing our little cat in, because none of the cats had showed up yet. This was like the very, very start of it. So we have just like a little thing and he was going in there to see if he could kind of line just enough so it wouldn't jump. And the guy that landed in the helicopter was like, well, you can go in, but make sure you have a quad or something to get you out with. So I told Keith I would go in with him. Curtis, if you're listening to this, ignore everything I'm Plug your ears. Plug your ears. La la la. Yeah. So anyways, by the time we'd got that cat in, it wasn't far and I was ahead and I will never forget it. Dave and Mike were on, on Dave's quad. He wasn't on his tractor, I don't think. Or maybe he was on his tractor. They dropped the disc. Yeah. Dave was on the quad. Mike was on the tractor. They dropped Mike's disc and were turning around and the flames and the smoke were just overhead. So I rip a UE and Keith is like behind me because he was we knew what trail dad was on but it had got so it gotten away so flipping quick. It was something else and Dave like looked at the panic on Dave's face seeing me in there was something else and I knew we were in like over our heads. That helicopter took off we didn't see it again for a long ⁓ I think it was a scout copter which is fine. So then the Mennonites had like climbed up on my roof. had a suppression unit, all this stuff. And we'd only just built our house. We hadn't even been in our house for six months when this was going on. And I was at one point like across, I was directing dozers across the creek to like fight. were trying to make a, they tried to make a guard up north. Like it was just completely out of control. And my phone is just blowing up. And, and Dave doesn't like have his phone. Some people are calling Keith. Everybody were trying to like organize all this. And I get a call at some point, no backtrack, we had to move our cows. Because it had jumped Augustine's, into Augustine's bush. So then it was our calving area was next. ⁓ So we have like, ⁓ there have been 20 or 30 people out there helping us move cows. ⁓ we finally get our cows moving in the direction that they need to go. ⁓ So we have like, ⁓ there have been 20 or 30 people out there helping us move cows. ⁓ we finally get our cows moving in the direction that they need to go. And they're, they're antsy, like they know, but they're also trying to find their calves. Like it's very chaotic. And there's a lot of people there. That's like super unusual for our herd to see that many people. We finally get them going. I was on the quad with a neighbor and all of a sudden this helicopter lands in the middle of our herd and our herd just scatters. And I've never seen Keith so mad. And he was like, get up in the air now. ⁓ he said some like choice words. And I think he pulled out his phone and was like, I'm filming you or something to that effect. Cause the guy's like, you gotta go, you gotta go. He's like, what do you think I'm doing? Like you've just put us back another 20 minutes because you've scattered the entire herd. ⁓ So we were like cutting fences, just trying to get them a hay field where at least we could get them out of like that was all we could do. And so we finally got them out and it was just like chaos. And the old boy that I riding with. never heard him cuss. He's like an old cowboy. So like, you know, he said some pretty gnarly things. That day I was like, whew, I'm not going to repeat it because it was next level. But I was just like, he's cocksuckers. That was like probably the politest thing that he said out of that. ⁓ He's they don't know what they're doing. But yeah, so then we're rounding everybody back up. We get him in that field. And I remember getting a call. I was at the creek. Yeah, that's when I was crossing. ⁓ And somebody, think it was one of the Mennonites, I don't even remember, was like, ⁓ hey, Like they've just said that this fire is coming towards your house and that you need to be prepared to like leave. Like if the wind picks up the way that they think it is, you're kind of hooped if it crosses the creek. Which in that year the creek was really low so it wouldn't have taken much. Especially because we have so much spruce. like once it's going through, it can jump a long way. Oh yeah. Like if a spark flies like... It just goes. And with like that deadfall in a grazing tenure. yeah, so like it was pretty wild. That's I called you. Yeah. ⁓ I hey, like, I don't know if you have anybody around or if you said. Just like, hey, can you organize some more people? Some more people, because that was the call I got and we didn't know. And I wasn't home, so I didn't know. I didn't know where the fire was here. I was back there by the calving area and it had gotten like up north. Like it was a mess. It was an absolute mess. And then. I don't remember. I think that night when things had finally quieted down, we decided to do. a back North because if it got into the if it would have jumped the little trail that was there Yeah, it would have it would have just kept going because it's all bush and everything was so windblown Yeah, like that was the worst of it. And so then fire like was like, we'll fine you and so there was I don't know oodles because we didn't own that land It was attached to our land, but then it goes to crown. Right? So the fire guard had started on our land was a bunch of us like we'll fine you'll fine you then fine fine us all because we're gonna build this guard because if you guys aren't doing anything I'd rather you fine me than me have to rebuild yeah, and I know that sounds so horrible to say but there must have been I don't know ten or 15 neighbors other like lot of politics there when it comes to the fire red tape So much right and I didn't realize that and so part me growing up as a firefighter's kid was like we got to go We got to go like you want to go. You've been told your whole life, like get out, let them deal with it, like whatever. But then seeing how they deal with it, I was like, not a chance. Like you've done nothing. from town fire versus ministry. So then that's the other thing. So forestry, ministry, whatever, was dealing with the bush. But then we had a fire department from Smithers, one of their trucks were parked out back to deal with the structures. This was on the Monday when that wind was supposed to like pick up. So we had a bunch of politics with the backburn that we did. And then they eventually came out and helped us do it because we were going to do it anyways. Anyways, because there was no point not to at that point. That's what they did in Goodlow. Didn't they backburn? A bunch too. Our guys backburned and they were mad. Yeah. Like you can't be lighting fires like that's what and they're like, no, the only thing that will fight this fire is fire. And that's what stopped it was the fact that they back burnt enough that it stopped. And you could watch it hit their back burn and then it just like the whole like. So between the fire guard and the back burn, that's what put. And they were like, so when when that helicopter landed where Keith was, when we were moving those cows out, they were bombing it. They were hauling from dugouts in the area and bombing it. So it's not that they weren't trying. But the thing was, is they waited till it got in the worst of the worst. to get there. was too big, it was out of control and it wasn't going good. And like obviously they don't want people around when they're bombing Which I get, I get that. We were trying to get out of there, but landing a helicopter down in the middle of where we're... You've just seen our cows. Again, I know that people don't always understand cows. Landing in the middle of them though, PSA, don't... That's a... You're an idiot. Don't land your helicopter in the middle of a herd. Just saying, it might not work out for you. So anyways, that following Monday... I think it was that there was a Smithers crew out here and that's when the wind was supposed to pick up so we were kind of like prepping. Well Fort St. John went on a evac alert. They went crazy. They went crazy. It took us three hours to get diesel out here for the cats actually fighting the fire. Yeah. Because everything had gone crazy in town. ⁓ yeah. And I was like, are you kidding me? fire will not make it to town if you guys get diesel to my cats. Because we can stop it here. And also how many people came out to just like see it? ⁓ a lot. We had a lot of lucky loo's That was good low too. So many people drove out there to check it out. We eventually, somebody sat at, I was doing food stuff, but somebody was sat on both ends. And we're like, are you here to help or are you here to see? And... So many. They got... Yeah. And like, so many people... understand that people want to see, but you're actually in the way. And I'm not trying to be a dick. I know it's interesting, but like, it's also not your stuff on the line. Like, yeah. That's like when the fire... Remember, we were at No Frills and we saw that fire and I was like that looks like it's by my mom's house. Yes. And it was like right close to her house. Yes. and all of town was congested because everybody was trying to... And like, it took my dad, he works in Taylor, it took him like an hour and a half to get to my parents' house. Because he couldn't get through. And it normally takes 20 minutes. Yeah. Because he could not get through. Yeah, see? I'm gonna say, Fort St. John is nuts when it comes to an emergency because they all panic. Yeah. Yes. then the situation gets so much worse. Yeah. And he's like, why are we all trying to see this when people are trying to get I was so mad. It's so fush. Well, and so then, OK, so that was the other thing. So we had the so again, the Mennonites nights were like, had my house like just soaked, like people were spraying the chickens, like you name it. Everything in our yard was like getting sprayed. And I so this was on the Monday or Sunday night. I can't even remember. I get a call saying, hey, they're trying to the the fire crew is telling us we can't be here. I said, who's telling you that? And they're like, yeah, they're shutting us down. They want us to pack up. And so I come, I don't know where I was. come ripping. And I said, who'd you talk to? So they point me in the direction. It says truck parked out back. So I go and talk. was like, okay, so what's the, and I'm trying to be polite, but my patients are very thin and I'm running on minimal sleep. And like, this is stressful. I was like, so what's going on? like, who are you? I was like, that's my house. Who are This is my land. Not if I said my land but like I'm not, you know, this is, I said, this is my operation. Like this is our operation. What do you want? Like, what are you doing? They're like, well you need to get all them out. They're not cleared to fires around the house. They're not struck. They're not cleared to fight structures. I said, okay, so what are you going to do? Like, well we'll wait here until an ember flies. I said, so you're going to wait in your truck until my house is on fire or until my is in fire. And then you're going to come do something. ⁓ I said, if got a problem, you come talk to me. Do not talk to them. I said, they're actually helping me. I said, you have no right to say diddly shit, because you, excuse my language, you're not doing nothing. I said, you're part of this problem. I said, I appreciate you being here. That's great. They're actually trying to prevent it. You're going to fight it. And I said, I understand. I said, my dad was deputy chief. I understand there's diddly squat you can do until the place is on fire. Don't tell them what to do. I said, you can come talk to me or my husband. And that guy was like, look at me. said, I don't care. And I said, I know that you're just doing your job. This is my livelihood. I am trying to be polite. Do not threaten fines on the people here to help me. Yeah. And he didn't say another word. He rolled his window up. said, all right. Because what do you do? ⁓ yeah, they can't. get it. They're tied up in red tape. And when he said, until an ember flies, I understand that that is their protocol. But don't be threatening people with empty handed threats or whatever. because it's inconvenient for you. Yeah. Well, also, why are you trying to like it was the same with like the good law one. They weren't willing till it like they weren't going to do preventative. No. They only are trying to deal with it once it's out of control and they can't. And then that is big. That's part of the red tape. Like that's the thing. There was a lot of stuff. It should not be the red tape. No, should be. should be you fix the problem before it becomes a problem. I agree. Not wait till problem is too big. Yeah, I agree. But and then there was like, I think if I remember correctly, dad might have to to correct this for me. I believe when that fire lit up, when we got back and he called whoever his contact was at ministry, the same guy that was like, hey, you got to come clean this bush up. He said, you're a little late cleaning that bush up. It's on fire now. And I told you so. And I was like, as much as that probably sounds like a you know, a Karen move for lack of a better term. He was right. He because they've already done this. That's the thing. They had a fire out here in 2016. Yeah. So and it was like behind the Shepherds Inn. Mm hmm. And then again, it lit up. Was it two years ago? Yeah. Twenty twenty three. It lit up. Yeah. I know. I don't know. Was it twenty twenty four? I can't remember. Like Shepherds Inn? Yeah. I don't. I think it was the same year. For all the red tape, though, it is kind of cool to see how the community will pull together. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. and know that there's neighbors and people out that actually care. And the people that you're around every day actually care. ⁓ yeah. And there was like the one family, I'm not going to name her, they have a little green, she had a little green house out here. And I had just met her like two or three days before this all transpired went to Pick Up ⁓ And she came out with food with her ⁓ and a couple of the other families. And I seen her and I just gave her. The biggest, she's probably not a hugger. I have no idea. was like beyond stressed. I just gave her like the biggest hug. Like I remember just, it actually makes me emotional like thinking about all the help that we had and even texting you guys like hey, like we, like Keith's buddy was like hey, like I heard your place is on fire. I'm gonna send a cat out or I'm gonna talk to so and so. We'll send a cat out. I'm gonna get the word out. Like is very good at like, he knows tons of people, right? So ⁓ anyways, like that kind of thing was crazy. crazy to see everybody. yeah. was, it was really cool to see as terrifying as it was, even though at the end of the day, all we lost was pasture. So we lost our grazing tenure pasture for majority of that. a little bit of fencing, ⁓ a lot of fencing. You cut a lot of wires. We cut a lot of wires and, like, mean that whole fence. Burned few posts. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ And all that was ours that burnt was up North. Yeah. So it wasn't. Like in the grand scheme of things. We didn't lose structures, we didn't lose any animals. Whatever. However, what did transpire from that is predators after the fire and that was something else. ⁓ the predators came in. That wolf pack came in crazy. Because they're all displaced. They got nowhere to go either, I suppose. ⁓ yeah, I guess so. I don't know. Is this the same as the Buick one or that was different? Because you're not that far away from that one. No, it's the same as the Buick one, I think. I think it was that big. All I know is it was burning up to Mr. Yeah, because once they went here, then they had to go, yeah, and that's Buick. Yeah. Because it's like five miles. It was huge. I think the line that we did, the cut line or whatever you call it, was about five miles long, if I remember correctly. To be crowned to another farmer's area, if I remember correct. Yeah. But okay, something super interesting on the topic of fires. where our cows grazed in the tenure, like in the grazing tenure, was not burnt. Like it was nowhere near as burnt. Like the grass was still green. Because they ate it Because they ate it down. And so there wasn't all the previous year's dead grass. And like for everybody being like, when it's that big and moving that fast, it doesn't burn anything that's green. Green. And so that was super... Like on an environmental standpoint for them being like, oh you can't do this, da da da da da. I'm like, the only place that didn't burn was where our cows were in that grazing tenure. Make that make sense. How is that? I know. Every time Jorim and I go on a road trip and there's like, you know, there's all like the cell, those like massive like cell tower plots or whatever. Jorim's always like, they could be grazing cows there. Like every time is how David feels about logging. Yeah. Yeah. Like. Just kick cows out, like as soon as you log, kick cows out. They gotta clean it up better. They log back in our, you know what's also interesting? This is like, we're slightly digressing and we'll get back, but our grazing tenure right now, after this whole fires and stuff, they've got. I want to say it's a forestry guy. Yeah. Come in to plant a bunch of trees because they got a bid from one of the native bands out here, which I don't care who bid it, but it's ALR land. Why does forestry have... So ALR is agriculture land reserve. Yeah. Why does forestry or oil or gas, any of those commissions have anything to do with ALR? Yeah. It does not make sense. But our grazing tenure is that. So they're turning it into bush? Not all of it, but they're trying to replace some of the stuff that burnt, even though that where it burnt is going. they cleaned it up? No. ⁓ I'm sorry. They cleaned up. That's lie have cleaned up. The cats came in and cleaned up the fire guards that we made and like put them back to bed. But they haven't cleaned up like the old trees or anything. Everything's still, well, anything that didn't burn is still crisscrossed and burnt, I guess. I have pictures of like Which is like ready to be burnt again at any Probably, I don't know. But yeah, so it's just, again, that's the political side of something. Everybody's got their muddy little paws in there. We just want to graze our cows. That's what it was for years ago. And even when we had to fence, we paid out of pocket to fence that grazing tenure after it burned because they were like, ⁓ well, we can't get approval for. six to eight months or something like that. Like we need this now. We didn't have any grazing so we're gonna go fence it and graze it. We couldn't put them in there right away after the fire anyways but we fenced it and then put them in there once the the land had like recovered essentially. Yeah. Because that was one of the things is we couldn't get approval for them to come and build it so we called it maintenance which I guess it is when you got no fence left. Yeah. The fire done burned it but Anyways, that's all I can do. can probably do a whole episode on politics. could do. OK, but let's go to our next question. Oh, what do we use for an accounting program? Because accounting on the farm seems pretty crazy. What do you use, Lacey? You guys aren't going to like this. I just do like an accountant book. Like a black book? Yeah. I said, you guys won't like this. I tried some computer things and I can't do this. I cannot do this. And I like sort all my receipts and they just have like a basket. OK, like you don't like it. I know that gives me anxiety a little bit. But. But I've tried other things and I have so much anxiety. Yeah, if I sort it and basket it and deal with it at the end of every year at the end of the year, I keep track of stuff in my head. Also, your operation is much smaller. Yeah, it is. I don't know how you could run like yours. Yeah, can run to that. My system wise. no, but I do get it. At some point you have to just take the stress out of it to get it done. That's what works. That's what works. Okay, so what do you guys use Trin? We use the Farm Credit Canada accounting program. I didn't know there was one. Everyone that I know uses QuickBooks and I hate QuickBooks. No, we, yeah. Is that just since you went corporate or since even when you guys were in Ever since we were partnership. Okay, I have to look into this. ⁓ So we like all of our loans are through farm credit anyways, so then it's just simpler and then they have it like they have it all laid out There's like nice little spreadsheet So every time Jorim and I need to update like our net worth and everything Like Tobin will just send us like the sheet that we just have to like fill out like it's all pre on there And then we just fill out like so then just Tobin so does this FCC accounting does it? Have like a spreadsheet for like your monthly submissions, like your incomes, outcomes. Oh, this is interesting. I made a spreadsheet. Yeah. Oh, because when I worked at the accountants, when we first were married, I asked an accountant, like, what would you use? And she showed me some examples. And so I made a spreadsheet based off of her recommendation. Yeah, that just adds your sums up and like what your ins and outputs are. calculator? It has been an adjustment though. So like I do it for, because Keith and I are our own entity but then we also are with his parents. So we have like, technically we've got two sets of books. So originally, mom and I tried to use Sage. It's not super farmer friendly because there's something. Yeah. Like when you put it in a cattle check, It's like your income, then all these other things get deducted off your cattle check. Sage didn't like that much. That was a mess up. And maybe I just don't know how to use it correctly. There was probably some tips and tricks that I didn't know. ⁓ Mom went from a black book to using that. She didn't love that. She did like that it calculated her GST though. She thought that was pretty sick. But yeah, now we just use a spreadsheet. But I'll have to look into this FCC thing. Yeah. But okay, also the app that I use to track my cattle has updated enough now that they have your incomes and your outputs. okay. But I don't know. When we first got the app, was like so ⁓ ⁓ use the Ranchr app. It's Ranchr It's like ranch with an R on the end. put my have like. I pictures of all my cows, who their mums are, the shots we give them. don't tag my cows. Yeah, you don't. You're not the same. Don't even worry about it. That's fine. But yeah, like I, that app has actually come leaps and bounds. Yes. Excuse me, because I was actually going leave that app you couldn't use it if you didn't have data for the longest time. There's a lot of things you could not do. There's a lot of things you couldn't do, but now it's been updated. Updated a lot. ⁓ So I really like it, but you can now do inputs and outputs. I just don't know if it's like enough for the accountant. Like what the... I'd have to look more into it. I don't to put a couple inputs in, outputs, and then... See how it's a report to see. to be determined. There... Okay, in this... No, hold on. Back up. One of our breeders, the bulls that we buy off of, she uses an accounting system. It's like a telus system, but it's for like livestock. think it's called telus livestock or something. She tracks everything off of it. And I was, it's expensive. It's way above my pay grade. couldn't, I can't afford it, but. Well, if you're selling bulls, then you can't Yeah, then you can't afford it. But. Super cool. you probably need. I. ⁓ you have to track everything. I actually think if somebody was like techie enough could build a QuickBooks, but for farmers. Yeah, that would be so good. In Canada, there's lots for the states in Canada. You ought to make a killin. If I was techie and had time, I'd figure that. Yeah, I'm not. that would. That sounds great. Somebody jump in on that. Please. I will help. figure that out. I'll help invest in that. Actually, that's a complete lie. know nothing about it, but that would be fun. Okay, how do you get a brand and why do you get a brand and what happens to it when you buy and sell was our fourth question today. Well, we just applied for a new brand because we incorporated all the cows into the farm. So we literally just, there's just like this sheet that you. Right out, you fill it out and you say, Hey, I want X, Y, Z. And you just, can create your own brand. can draw whatever the heck you want. And then, put it, and then you pick like on the hip, left hip, right hip, left rib, then you have options like your first choice, your second choice and your third choice. Yeah. I think there's three. Four. Four. Okay. There's four. And then either cattle or horses. Yeah. Somebody said for horses, you can't get, you can't make a new brand for horses. have to go back through I don't know if this is true I read that because the page just okay I've never either check horse or cow okay no that makes sense because we could I think we could apply the same brands that we did our cattle and yeah I of actually a spoke I think this person's brand horse brand that I'm talking about isn't letters it is a picture of a symbol a symbol and I think you have to go back through for a symbol Like not just an upside down rafter like it's a diamond. Yeah, I think hers was like a key or something like that. there is a few rules on what you can do. You can't do like an O or a closed shape because the inside will fall out and you can't see what it is. Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. So there are some rules. Yeah. So what did you guys decide on for your incorporated brand? Oh, Jorim did this really, Jorim is so good at like. coming up with brands. That's Keith too, he loves like that. so what do do? So it's like so where RCF is like Rivercrest Farms. So it's like ⁓ ⁓ would have to find it. You have to post an R, but then there's like, but he turned it into a C top and then like there's the F in it. It's like, have you ever seen that thing where you can do your initials and it's like, you do the letters over top of each other? No. Okay, well I'll have show us. Okay. I will show you. Yeah, show us a picture because that would be really neat to see. I'll show you. Did it get approved or have you just sent it in? No, I sent it in last week and I think it got approved. I don't know which one got approved yet. But they said it's your... Your thing is sent in the mail. ⁓ so they send you the form. Or they send you this little sheet that says your brand is good till 2020. Whatever. I think it's five years. Yeah, I think it's years. And then have to then you have to renew, yeah. Because you have to put, that's the other thing. So on your brand application, you have to put who owns those cows. Yeah. Yeah. Essentially. And then when you sell them, there's the brand inspector at the auction. Okay, so we don't do this. this you don't get them inspected. No, we do but inspector comes to us because we sell right to a buyer. Yeah, so get the brand inspector come to us. ⁓ okay. when we sell, Jorim gathers all the cows and then he coordinates, he has to coordinate a truck and the brand inspector for the exact same time. and say, can you guys come at this time? And then the brand inspector has to like count every single cow. And they ask what brands you have, because some of our bulls that we've bought are branded with their brand. We don't rebrand. No. Some people do. don't rebrand our bulls. We had cows that had a bunch, so we did rebrand our entire herd because they were like, we need approval for this and an approval for this brand. And I was like, I don't even know who. Like we bought from these guys. These are the last people to own them. Yeah. And they were like, oh, well, we need your approvals from. But if you put your brand on and yours is there, everyone else's is void. Void. Yeah. So the point of a brand is to prove that they are your animals. Animals. Your cattle. And especially like if you run a herd next to somebody else's herd. Yes. You need that brand so that- you're going to like community pasture so that you know that your cow is- Your cow. Your cow. Or if there's a dead cow, it's your dead cow. Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, you can't say it was a neighbors and take one of theirs need to be branded to go to I'm sure you do. Yeah. Yeah, they do. They have to be branded. Even the calves have to be branded. Yeah. Yeah. See, so we don't you guys brand your calves, correct? Every calf. Yeah, we don't brand our calves. We will brand our replacement heifers at a year old. But we're also not in community pasture. We don't, I mean we have one neighbor that's close to us with cows, but like not I guess when we do branding that's when we do the shots That's when you take the nuts out. Yeah, and that's when we brand. Yeah, so if all at once So we don't brand our calves but we do the shots and the castration if we've missed one we dehorn in the fall, right? But we don't brand we just brand our heifers ⁓ I don't know the reason maybe it's because we we sell our calves quite quickly like in January, so it's just But it is interesting. A brand is very important, in my opinion, especially community posture, just in general, your cows get out to differentiate. It's also interesting that some brands show up, or sorry, some cows' brand shows up much nicer than others. Like we have one old longhorn left out of when Granddad was like still around because he loved the color. Anyways. her brand looks so good. like some of our some of our herferds they don't look as good or like some of it is like the hide and the hair. Yeah. But I would say probably at least 50 percent is how it got branded. ⁓ totally. We have one that I don't know if I think one of the boys did it, but I think the iron might have been a bit too hot. Yeah. If it's too hot, then it's if you like move it just the tiniest bit then it's totally right. Yeah. So okay, when you guys brand with this new brand is it ⁓ stamp? Yes. So Jorim will ⁓ something together. His own thing. Right. And then it's just gonna be one stamp. Got you. So how's your guys's? We use a straight iron and draw it on. Wait, explain that to me? I It's like what we have, right? Yeah, it's just a... Yeah. Not a stamp. We tried the stamp because David made one, but it's too big and it doesn't work. What's your brand? What's your brand? A spade bit. So it's like a line, a line. Okay, yep. So we should post pictures of all of that. have a U shape. Yeah. Like a U shape and then just a straight iron. Yeah. So I... Oh yeah, that's right. You do your U shape first, right? And then you straight iron. And then you put your little sides on and then you do your long. Yeah. Right. That's right. Okay. Whereas we, all of our brands, like when we were all separate, Jorim made a brand for each person, but it was just one. So ours is three. Ours is an ⁓ and H and an upside down rafter ⁓ I think Dave made them when he was You use a hot, like not an electric iron, right? No, we put ours in a fire. ⁓ brand way nicer. They do. ⁓ personally haven't seen it. I've just seen picture comparisons ⁓ ⁓ stoke like in the fire works way better. Yeah. You do. And I guess if they're going through a shirt shoot, ⁓ an electrical one is fine. Yeah. But if they're like, if you're roping and flat assing, like those chords. get caught and in the way of everything. And then they catch and then all of it's unplugged and now you can't brand because somebody brings the calf like way over there and then you can't reach because you can't unplug it because it doesn't keep it hot enough. We don't have electricity yet or most people run generators. we ain't got nothing. You're like what? Yeah. Anyone that I've seen that it's a generator. a generator. OK. Yes, we didn't go. Yeah, most people just run a generator, but that cord is always in the way. Yeah. unless you want to run a tipping table, which that's what Holly Yeah, that's what they use. Yeah. So then the cord doesn't get in the the tipping table and some people do not love the tipping table. Yeah, that's interesting. Yeah, Jorim would not love that. I don't think, yeah, we literally just. Do we have another question? think that was our last question for this. Well, we could do one more if we wanted. ⁓ so when we, but we didn't really answer the second part. So when we buy and sell, the brand is still on the cow. What happens? Nothing. Nothing. You can just put your brand on. you buy one, so. rebrand. You just rebrand it. Yeah. But I think we're all at the stage where all of our cows and calves are basically just our own. Yeah, our original few cows still have other brands. But but overall, if you go to sell, mean, if you had a brand and you didn't have very many cows because prime inspection. Brand inspectors kind of keep track. Like they have six to go through. Yeah, go through. So if you were to send a whole bunch through, I think they'd pick up on hmm. Or if you fresh branded over top to try and like steal someone's when you rebranded the cows that you bought with a bunch of other brands, you don't brand over top of them. You brand wherever your brand is supposed to be. So, so for example, ours is on the left rib. Yeah. Sorry, left rib. If somebody's brand was already there, what do you do? Do you go underneath? Or off to the side? Beside Beside it, okay. Yeah, especially on a cow. Yeah, there's a lot of There's a lot of room, yeah. And that's the thing is when you brand calves, because we brand our calves like, they're like two months old. Yeah, so they're pretty little they're little so then your brand stretches too. Yeah, so you kind of have to think about like what that looks like You have to kind of yeah, you have to run it size appropriately. So you have I think we have a calf brand and then a cow brand like because the one's Yeah, because so then you branded with a cow brand on a calf It'd be huge. Your brand would be this big by the time the cow grew up. Right? So your calf brand is smaller. Yeah But it stretches like appropriately like it looks still good even though it's still looks pretty good. Okay Trust me. Yeah, we don't do that, so it's completely off my... Okay, well that was our last question. I think that was a pretty pretty good Q &A. Okay. gonna do a ranch wife recipe swap so I can start. I love a crock pot chicken pot pie. I'm not a normal like chicken pot pie girly like I don't love the crust. ⁓ love chicken pot pie. But I love a crock pot chicken pot Because it's just the crust on top or what? There's no crust. You can do biscuits on the side like baking powder. Is it baking powder or baking soda? Baking powder biscuits. Baking powder in biscuits. Yes, baking powder biscuits. And those are good on the side so then you don't have a crust. Because I hate when the is like soggy and... The worst part about anything is pie crust. Yes. If you could get rid of the... Agreed. I'm gonna wave a flag over here and say the pie crust is what makes the dish. We have to do a poll. Are you a pie crust person or not? Yeah. Because Lacey, you really don't like pie crust. And I'm like, I could take it or leave it. No, that's like I'm taking all of it. If we get a pie at our house. What? just eating the filling. And the crust is left in the dish. Your whole household? Yes, ma'am. Wow. Wow, I have never heard somebody oppose to pie crust. And I would rather like not. If I, I'll eat the bottom part and like the top, but the top rim is the worst. ⁓ yeah, because it's like over baked and dry. That's my favorite part. Crunchy, Having said that though, apparently I make really good pie crust. Okay. So you still make it, you just don't eat it. Yeah, because apparently everyone loves my pie. Okay. I just don't eat it. That's so funny. Anyways, this crustless pie goes in the crock pot. better. It's so much better. And it's like just your chicken, chicken broth. cream of chicken, obviously. Yeah, you and your cream of chicken. I do a lot of cream a staple in your household. It is. I fire. Yeah, you buy the case of it, don't you? Yeah, you do. And then your potatoes, and then you just throw in your like mixed, like a frozen mixed veggie Oh. And then you're That's it? Yeah. Okay, this is interesting. I don't know if I'm on board, but I would be willing to try it with the biscuits. I'll do the rest of it. Okay. I'll send it. So mine is like a chicken bacon ranch. Potato bake. ⁓ So you're supposed okay, I the ranch Seasoning every time there's like a chicken bacon ranch thing. There's always like ⁓ one packet of ranch seasoning I'm like, where are we buying this ranch seasoning? What I have some I can't hold on. I'll grab it I can never find it. Where do you get it? No frills or what? ⁓ No one else has it, it's on the top shelf. And you can reach it? Well yeah, you just do a little jump. Okay, this is not the ranch, this is the dill. Dan's country dill. But they have like hidden So what you use the dill for? Oh, this makes a great vegetable dip. Smashing good. Could you put it on popcorn? No, I think it's too, oh you probably could. You probably could put just the mix without the sour cream and Yeah, yeah. Okay, this is what it looks like though. Okay. That's what you need. It's the best. Dan's. I've never seen I don't know if the ranch one is. I think it's Hidden Valley. Okay. Or whatever, but it's in a packet like a soup. It looks like a soup packet. Yeah. Sometimes you find it in the soup section too, but at no frills. Yeah. It's above the dressings. I never look at the top of where the crispy onions are. Oh. It's there. I don't buy crispy onions, but. You're missing out. You are missing out. Let me tell you, the Coops introduced me to that. So good. I'll be putting those on everything. That's so funny. Okay. And you obviously don't buy crispy onions. I do actually because we went to my family's. I'm surprised by that from somebody who didn't know what tater tots are. We're buying crispy onions. You feeling okay? Just kidding. I'm just kidding. My brother's wedding, they had crispy onions for the burgers. And David was like... Of all the things you chose to bring home from this wedding, you didn't bring the bag of crispy onions. How dare you not do that? was like, well, mom was like divvying everything up and there was like all this food and I don't know. Didn't think of it. Yeah. That's so funny. My sister was like, I'll take them. Crispy onions. Okay. I'll have to get this. Super good. Okay. So on this casserole, it's supposed to be chicken breast. I just throw a whole chicken in my crock pot and shred it. ⁓ okay. Yeah, because I don't you throw a whole chicken in your crock pot You know, yes in the oven. I mean, yeah sometimes but for like if a recipe is calling for Chicken, well, it's like cube chicken. I just Crock pot it because I don't really buy chicken breasts. I buy whole chickens Right never thought to put it in the crock pot so easy and then you just shred that bad boy up. ⁓ So good, and then it's like we're all learning. Yeah potatoes ⁓ Cooked bacon, a cup of shredded cheese, ranch dressing. Okay. Olive oil, garlic, all your spices. You mix that all up. You cook your chicken, mix all that up. Throw it in the oven, it. Uncooked potatoes? Yes. Or do you parboil them? I don't. You probably could. I don't. I see. I don't parboil anything. I probably should. a rush or not? Yeah, it depends on me. Like, do you have two hours to put it in the oven or do you only have like 30 minutes? It does not take two hours to crisp up a potato. If you dice a potato, 40 minutes at most. At 400? Throw those bad boys. It depends if you're doing two pans or not. Yeah, just rotate your pans through. I think I'm a very lazy cook. I'm not gonna do the extra. I need the quickest, convenient, anyways. Then you just mix everything together, drizzle your cheese, and then you top it. ⁓ this is my favorite part. You top it with crispy onions. Adds little... Do it. Okay, so one pan... Yeah. ...feeds you and Keith. Two meals, one meal. It depends how big the chicken was and how big the pan is. Okay. I'm just thinking about feeding like 15 people. You need probably two. Probably two at least. Yeah. Or just, yeah, I think what's the say this feeds? Probably four. It says serving six. OK, I would say four. Yeah, men. Farm men. Yeah, it's a different breed out there. Yeah. So like, think we probably get a dinner and a lunch out of it. Yeah. Most times. Depends. But yeah, super easy. Well, mine is also chicken. ⁓ we're on a chicken kick this week. Okay. Which is funny because we're all cattle ranchers. I feel like we don't talk a lot about chicken, but we love a good chicken. We do love a good chicken. Lacey raised chickens last year for me and that was bless your heart. I need more chickens. Next year. Yes. First my house. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. What's your recipe? I do like a honey barbecue sauce. ⁓ smoked. And it's just like honey, ketchup, or you can use like tomato sauce. Okay. And then... cider vinegar, some garlic, salt, pepper. And then what I do is I add molasses and liquid smoke. Just a touch of liquid smoke. I do quite a bit of molasses. The molasses makes it so much better. I've heard this. Molasses is a good trick in barbecue sauce. have heard this. That sounds so good. I don't really stock molasses. I just dump it on like- do because I run out of brown sugar and then I need to make brown sugar. Oh yeah. Because I always run out of brown sugar. I keep molasses for barbecue sauce. Well when there's the sugar shortage, I was making my own brown sugar and then every once in I run out. Cause Jorim puts brown sugar in his coffee. I thought this man's been drinking his coffee black. Well, it's either black or it's cream and a lot of sugar. Oh he's no in between. No. Okay we totally digressed, that's interesting. Yeah. Okay. Anyways. Continue, sorry. Okay, so this is on a chicken breast? is on No, I just dump it on a chicken. Like a full In a crock pot. In a crock pot! Full chicken. And leave it for like six hours. hours, Where have I been? I don't know. You can even cook those bad boys from frozen. Throw them in the morning as long as Yeah, I normally do. No! As long as it's Yes! No! Oh yeah. probably need like eight hours on a frozen bird, but- Yeah. What have I been doing this whole time? You gotta utilize your crock pot more. That thing's a godsend. I do need to utilize I love it. And the chickens you gave us like weren't the biggest ones? They fit, mine fits in the crock pot perfectly frozen. ⁓ yeah, see I did have a dilemma with this. I ordered some bigger chickens. They were fit. I didn't over, like I didn't... ⁓ You didn't stuff them. Yeah, I didn't. You don't want any chicken heart attacks going on. Mine were, I just waited till they were a bit older. Like... ⁓ you them long. ⁓ had them longer they had them a little bit on the long run had to butcher mine because we had medical appointments in Vancouver right right and so we had I had a timeline yeah that makes sense and I wasn't willing to feed them off their feet no no no no so it's gross here we are yeah but it's actually nice like we it's like a good amount yeah they're not like so big that you're like we are eating chicken but I think I have like one left ⁓ yeah have four left I don't get mine till September Uh oh. How many do you have left? More than that because somebody miscalculated instead of ending up with 17, I ended up with 27. Oh. Well, if you have too many, I will buy more off. Yeah, I'll definitely buy some off you if you got too I don't know how many I have left. Yeah. Cause I was like, I have chicken. Also, I am running out of beef, so we've been eating more chicken.
