Latest / Reformed Thinking / Revelation by Sovereign Grace: Knowing the Father Only Through the Son (Matthew 11:25–27)

- 0:00All right, hello and welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:02We're really glad you could join us again.
- 0:04Yeah, it's great to be back. If you're new to what we do
- 0:07here, the whole premise is pretty simple.
- 0:08We take, you know, a stack of what can be pretty dense
- 0:11theological sources, commentaries, systematic
- 0:14theologies, all that stuff, and we try to break them down.
- 0:17We want to get past the surface. We're not here to give you a a
- 0:20light devotional thought for the day.
- 0:22We really want to hand you the tools to understand the
- 0:25architecture of your faith. And today we are opening up a
- 0:29text that is, well, it's massive.
- 0:33It is. It's arguably one of the most
- 0:35challenging passages in the New Testament, especially for, you
- 0:38know, the modern mind. We're going to be in the Gospel
- 0:41of Matthew Chapter 11, specifically verses 25 through
- 0:4527. And just to set the table so
- 0:47everyone knows where we're coming from, right?
- 0:49We should do that. We're both approaching this as
- 0:51Protestant Christians, we hold to Reformed theology, and our
- 0:55lens for this is pretty much the Westminster Confession.
- 0:58That's right. So we believe God is sovereign
- 1:00over all things, and that includes salvation.
- 1:03And this passage, I mean this passage is a pillar for that
- 1:06conviction. So the mission for today is to
- 1:09really get a handle on what the Bible calls the sovereign
- 1:12pleasure of God. Yeah, we want to try and answer
- 1:15that question that I think bothers a lot of people.
- 1:18Why do some people hear the gospel and believe, while other
- 1:22people, sometimes brilliant, educated, you know, morally good
- 1:27people, they hear the exact same message and just walk away?
- 1:32Is it because the believer was just a bit smarter or more open
- 1:36minded? Is it free will or is there
- 1:38something else going on entirely?
- 1:39It's the big question, and Jesus gives us an answer here that is,
- 1:43well, it's pretty shocking. Before we even get to the
- 1:46answer, we should probably introduce the text itself.
- 1:48Theologians actually have a nickname for this little
- 1:50section. They do.
- 1:51They call it the Johannian Thunderbolt.
- 1:53Which is a great name. It's a perfect name.
- 1:55It comes from the fact that Matthew, Mark and Luke, the
- 1:58synoptic gospels, they usually have a certain style.
- 2:01They're very earthy, you know, lots of parables, lots of
- 2:03action. But the Gospel of John is
- 2:06different. It's source, it's full of high
- 2:09theology, the sun's preexistence, that intimate
- 2:12relationship within the Trinity. And then bam, right in the
- 2:16middle of Matthew, which is all about the Kingdom and Jewish
- 2:18history, you get this bolt of lightning that sounds like it
- 2:23was ripped right out of the pages of John.
- 2:25It just strikes out of nowhere. It's this moment where the
- 2:27clouds just part and you get this incredible glimpse into the
- 2:31eternal counsel of the Godhead. But to understand the lightning,
- 2:35you first have to understand the storm that produced it.
- 2:37And that brings us to our first section, the context of crisis.
- 2:42We've got to look at Matthew 11, verses 20 to 24.
- 2:45If you just drop into verse 25 cold, you miss all the drama.
- 2:48You really do. You have to realize that Jesus
- 2:51is not having a good week. I mean not by any human
- 2:53standard, not at all. He has just spent a huge amount
- 2:56of time ministering in three specific cities, Corazon,
- 2:59Bethsaida and Capernaum. And these weren't just random
- 3:02little towns on a map. No, not at all.
- 3:05Capernaum was his headquarters. It was the base of operations
- 3:08for his entire Galilean ministry.
- 3:11If Jesus had a hometown advantage anywhere on earth, it
- 3:14should have been there. So he's been there, teaching in
- 3:16their synagogues, healing their sick, casting out demons.
- 3:20He has poured his life into these communities.
- 3:22And the result. Total rejection.
- 3:25Hard hearted, absolute rejection, the text says.
- 3:27He began to reproach the cities where most of his mighty works
- 3:31were done, because they did not repent.
- 3:33That phrase mighty works. That's so key.
- 3:36These people weren't rejecting Jesus because they didn't have
- 3:38enough data. That is such a critical point.
- 3:41We have this idea today. Oh, if God would just write his
- 3:43name in the sky, that everyone would believe.
- 3:45Well, in Capernaum, he basically did that.
- 3:47Yeah. They saw lepers cleansed
- 3:48instantly. They saw blind people see for
- 3:51the first time. They saw the laws of physics
- 3:53suspended by the sheer authority of this man.
- 3:55They had the best evidence imaginable.
- 3:58And still nothing. They didn't budget.
- 4:00Stone cold. And this creates what our
- 4:03sources call a theological crisis.
- 4:07It just shatters the modern idea that the human mind is a neutral
- 4:10judge of truth, right? If the mind were neutral, the
- 4:14people of tourism would have looked at the evidence and
- 4:16concluded, well, obviously this has to be the Messiah.
- 4:19But they didn't. This proves the problem isn't a
- 4:22lack of light, it's a love for darkness.
- 4:24And so Jesus pronounces woes on them.
- 4:27He says it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon,
- 4:30these notoriously wicked Pagan cities on Judgment Day, than for
- 4:34them. It's a funeral cry.
- 4:36That word woe means deep sorrow mixed with pending judgment.
- 4:40He's telling them that their privilege, their front row seat,
- 4:42has actually become their condemnation.
- 4:44The more light you get, the more responsible you are.
- 4:46And they had all the light. So if you're looking at this
- 4:48from a human leadership perspective, it's a failure.
- 4:50It really is. Jesus has launched his Kingdom
- 4:53campaign and his core demographic, the religious Jews
- 4:56of Galilee, have just said no thanks.
- 4:58Yeah, try to put yourself in the disciples shoes for a second.
- 5:01You've left your Nets, your family, you've followed this
- 5:04rabbi and now the establishment, the very people who should be
- 5:07welcoming him are turning their backs.
- 5:10The whole movement looks like it's hitting a brick wall.
- 5:12You'd expect Jesus to be discouraged.
- 5:14Maybe, you know, change up his tactics.
- 5:16Try a new approach. But he doesn't, and that's what
- 5:19leads us right into Section 2, the Father as sovereign
- 5:23administrator. So we're in verses 25 and 26.
- 5:26Now how does Jesus respond to this massive national rejection?
- 5:31He praises, he praises. Verse 25 kicks off with at that
- 5:35time Jesus answered and said, I thank you Father, Lord of heaven
- 5:38and earth. I love that word answered.
- 5:41It's like he's in a conversation but nobody actually asked him a
- 5:44question. He's answering the situation.
- 5:46That's it. He's looking at the hard hearts
- 5:48of Capernaum, at the rejection, and he's answering that reality
- 5:52with this prayer. And the word for thank here,
- 5:55it's more than just thanks. Right.
- 5:57Oh, much more. In the Greek it's Eximola gumai.
- 6:00That's a heavy word. What's the what's the nuance
- 6:03there? It's a compound word.
- 6:04It comes from eek meaning out of and homologio, which means to
- 6:08say the same thing. So it's about confessing,
- 6:13agreeing with, acknowledging fully.
- 6:15Jesus isn't just saying, hey thanks dad, he's saying father,
- 6:19I publicly confess and I'm in full agreement with what you are
- 6:22doing right now. He's aligning himself completely
- 6:24with the Father's plan, even when it looks like a failure.
- 6:26Precisely. He's looking at the rejection
- 6:29and instead of questioning it or getting frustrated by it, he
- 6:32validates it. He says.
- 6:33I'm with you on this. And notice who he addresses God
- 6:36as Lord of heaven and earth. Yes, that title establishes
- 6:41total ownership. God isn't, you know, running for
- 6:43office hoping we'll vote for him.
- 6:45He owns the building. He's the proprietor.
- 6:47He is, He has the absolute right to do with His creation as He
- 6:51sees fit, and what He has seen fit to do is what Jesus thanks
- 6:55Him for next. This is what our source is
- 6:57called, the Double Action. Because you have hidden these
- 7:00things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.
- 7:04OK, let's take those one at a time because this is where a lot
- 7:06of people start to get uncomfortable, the text says.
- 7:09God hid these things. It's an active verb.
- 7:11He is the one doing the hiding. It is.
- 7:14It doesn't say God just passively allowed the wise to
- 7:16miss it. It says he actively concealed
- 7:19the saving reality of the Kingdom from them.
- 7:22The information was there, the miracles, the sermons, but the
- 7:25spiritual significance was cloaked.
- 7:28So who are the wise and prudent? We need to be careful here,
- 7:31right? Is Jesus just bashing education?
- 7:34Is he saying if you have a PhD you can't be a Christian?
- 7:38Not at all, and that's a great question.
- 7:40The Reformed tradition has always placed a huge value on
- 7:43the mind. We love books.
- 7:44We love study the wise. The soften in Greek, in the
- 7:48immediate context refers to the religious intelligentsia of
- 7:52Jesus Day. The Scribes.
- 7:53The Pharisees. The experts in the law, yeah.
- 7:55But the deeper meaning, the one that applies to us, refers to a
- 7:59spiritual posture. It's about the autonomous
- 8:01intellect. That's the perfect way to put
- 8:03it. It refers to the person who
- 8:05thinks their own mind is the final Court of Appeals.
- 8:07The person who says I will judge God.
- 8:09I will evaluate the Bible based on my modern sensibilities.
- 8:12If it makes sense to me, then I'll accept it.
- 8:14So wise in this context really means wise in their own eyes.
- 8:18Correct. It is intellectual pride.
- 8:21It's the person who is so full of themselves that there's just
- 8:24no room for God to give them a revelation.
- 8:27And the theology for this has a name.
- 8:29It's called judicial hardening. Can you unpack that for us?
- 8:33It means that God, in His justice, gives the proud exactly
- 8:37what they want. They want to be the captains of
- 8:38their own souls. They want to rely on their own
- 8:41logic as the ultimate standard. Fine, God steps back.
- 8:45He hands them over to the darkness they've chosen.
- 8:48He hides the spiritual reality from them, so that, as Isaiah
- 8:52says, seeing, they do not see. It's a terrifying thought.
- 8:55The most educated man in Israel, the guys who had memorized the
- 8:59Torah, looked at the living Son of God and all they saw was a
- 9:02demon possessed Carpenter. Because the Father hid the truth
- 9:05from them, their pride became their blinder.
- 9:07It's just like Paul says in First Corinthians.
- 9:09The natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God
- 9:13because they are spiritually discerned.
- 9:14OK, so that's the negative side of the action.
- 9:16God hides, but there's a positive side.
- 9:19He revealed them to babes. Yes, the Greek word here is
- 9:23nepuwa. It literally means non speaking
- 9:26ones. Infants, toddlers.
- 9:29But obviously Peter and Andrew and John weren't actual
- 9:32toddlers. They were grown men with jobs
- 9:35and families. Physically, yes, but socially
- 9:37and religiously they were nobodies.
- 9:39They were the people of the land.
- 9:41They didn't have degrees from the right schools.
- 9:43They didn't have a pedigree. To a Pharisee, they were
- 9:46uneducated common fishermen. So Jesus is using the term to
- 9:50describe their heart posture, their spiritual condition.
- 9:53Exactly. Think about an infant.
- 9:55An infant is the definition of helplessness.
- 9:57A baby can't feed itself. A baby can't defend itself or
- 10:00clean itself. A baby brings absolutely nothing
- 10:03to the table except its need. So the babe is the person who
- 10:06has finally come to the end of their own resources.
- 10:08The babe is the one who finally says, I can't figure this out, I
- 10:11am not smart enough, I'm not good enough.
- 10:13Lord, you have to help me. And Jesus says that it's God's
- 10:16delight to show his greatest treasures to that person.
- 10:19It's a total reversal of how the world works.
- 10:21We reward the strong, the brilliant, the self-sufficient.
- 10:24God reveals himself to the spiritually bankrupt.
- 10:27It just shatters our pride. Salvation isn't a discovery made
- 10:31by the clever. It's an apocalypse, an unveiling
- 10:35that is granted to the humble. You don't figure God out.
- 10:39God reveals himself to you. But.
- 10:41The question that always comes up is why?
- 10:44Why does God do it this way? Is it just that the babes were
- 10:47nicer people? Were they more innocent?
- 10:49And verse 26 gives us the only answer the Bible ever gives.
- 10:53Yes, Father, for so it seemed good in your sight.
- 10:55The Greek word there is udokia. Yes, and it means God's good
- 11:00pleasure, His delight, his sovereign satisfaction.
- 11:03This takes us right to the heart of the doctrine of unconditional
- 11:06election. Which means God's choice to
- 11:08reveal wasn't based on anything he saw inside the babes.
- 11:11That's right, God didn't look down the corridors of time and
- 11:14say, oh look, Peter's going to turn out to be a really faithful
- 11:16guy, so I'll choose him. No, Peter was a mess.
- 11:19God didn't choose the babes because they were innocent or
- 11:22had some foreseen merit. He chose them simply because it
- 11:25pleased him to do so. So it's grounded entirely in the
- 11:27will of God, not in the the worth of the person.
- 11:30And that is so hard for us. We want it to be about us.
- 11:34We want to find the reason somewhere in our own resume.
- 11:37Oh, I believed because I was more open minded.
- 11:39I believed because I did my research.
- 11:41But Jesus just strips all of that away.
- 11:44He says no, you believe, because it seemed good in the Father's
- 11:47sight to reveal it to you. It just destroys all boasting.
- 11:50Completely. If you're a believer today, you
- 11:52can't look down your nose at an atheist and say, well, I'm just
- 11:55smarter than him. All you can say is I was just as
- 11:58blind as he is. But for reasons known only to
- 12:00God, he was pleased to open my eyes.
- 12:03It levels the entire playing field at the foot of the cross.
- 12:05It does The most brilliant Nobel laureate and the simplest child
- 12:09stand on the exact same ground before God?
- 12:11Absolute total dependence on sovereign grace.
- 12:14So we've seen the Father as the sovereign Administrator.
- 12:18He has the divine plan. Now we shift to Section 3, the
- 12:21sun, a sovereign mediator. We're looking at the first half
- 12:24of verse 27. And this is where the
- 12:26Thunderbolt really strikes with full force.
- 12:29Jesus says all things have been delivered to me by my Father.
- 12:32All things. I mean, that is a staggering,
- 12:35all-encompassing claim. It's comprehensive.
- 12:37The Greek verb is padathia. It means handed over, entrusted.
- 12:42It implies a formal transaction. Many theologians connect this to
- 12:46what's called the Covenant of Redemption or the Council of
- 12:48Peace. This pre temporal agreement
- 12:51within the Trinity. Exactly before the foundation of
- 12:53the world, there was an agreement where the Father
- 12:56entrusted the entire execution of the plan of salvation and the
- 12:59judgement of the world to the Son.
- 13:01So Jesus isn't just a wandering teacher offering some good
- 13:05advice. He's the CEO of the universe.
- 13:07He's been given the keys. He is the mediator.
- 13:10If you want to deal with the Father, you must go through the
- 13:12Son. He holds all authority and then
- 13:15he makes this statement about knowledge that is just mind
- 13:18bending. One knows the Son except the
- 13:20Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son.
- 13:23This is pure, unadulterated high Christology.
- 13:26This is one of the clear statements where we see that
- 13:28Jesus is God. He's homoseos of the very same
- 13:32substance as the Father. Explain the logic there.
- 13:35OK, so God is infinite. He's eternal without limit, who
- 13:39can fully, exhaustively and completely comprehend an
- 13:43infinite being. Well, only another infinite
- 13:45being. Precisely.
- 13:46If Jesus were a created being, even the highest Archangel,
- 13:49Michael, his mind would be finite.
- 13:52He could not possibly contain a full knowledge of the infinite
- 13:55Father. But Jesus claims to know the
- 13:57Father just as the Father knows him.
- 13:59That is a direct claim to divine equality.
- 14:02It's a closed circle of divine intimacy that no one else can
- 14:05enter. It is, and it serves as a
- 14:07massive rebuke to the wise. We were just talking about the
- 14:10critics, the Pharisees. They thought they could size
- 14:12Jesus up and judge him. They looked at him and said he's
- 14:15a glutton and a drunkard, right? And Jesus is basically saying
- 14:19you don't have the first clue who I am.
- 14:21My identity is a divine mystery that is infinitely too high for
- 14:25your autonomous reason to grasp. Unless, and this is the huge
- 14:29pivot, unless he chooses to reveal it.
- 14:31And that takes us to Section 4. The sun is sovereign revealer,
- 14:34the verse continues. Nor does anyone know the Father
- 14:37except the Son and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal
- 14:40him. This is the exclusive channel,
- 14:42and in our culture this is incredibly offensive.
- 14:45We're constantly told that all roads lead to God, all paths
- 14:49lead up the same mountain. Yes, that's the prevailing idea.
- 14:52But Jesus says no, there are no paths up the mountain, you are
- 14:56all the bottom in the dark, and the only way you see the Father
- 14:59is if I come down from the top and personally show him to you.
- 15:02It's a direct link to John 14.6. I am the way, the truth, and the
- 15:07life. No one comes to the Father
- 15:09except through me. It's a complete rejection of
- 15:11religious pluralism. There is only one ventricle of
- 15:14grace, as the Puritans would say.
- 15:16Jesus is the sole exegete of God.
- 15:19If you want to know what God is really like, you have to look at
- 15:22Jesus, and you can only truly see Jesus if he lets you.
- 15:25Let's focus on that word Wills to whom the Son wills to reveal
- 15:29him. The Greek is bullatai, and this
- 15:32word refers to a deliberate, active, determined will.
- 15:35It's not a faint wish. It's not a passive hope.
- 15:37It's a sovereign decision. Yes, so many people have this
- 15:40picture of Jesus as the sort of, you know, passive gentleman who
- 15:45just stand at the door of your heart and knocks politely,
- 15:48hoping you might let him in. But ultimately, he's helpless if
- 15:50you say no. That's the popular image, but it
- 15:52is not the Jesus of Matthew 11. The Jesus of this passage is a
- 15:56sovereign king who actively chooses to whom he will grant
- 16:00sight. He doesn't just offer a light,
- 16:03he creates eyes. And this is what we call the
- 16:05doctrine of effectual calling. It is when the sun reveals.
- 16:09It isn't just showing someone data on a spreadsheet.
- 16:11It's a powerful operation of the Holy Spirit that overcomes our
- 16:15natural blindness and resistance.
- 16:17Remember the crisis we started with?
- 16:19Yeah, the rejection ensures in. Why did they reject him?
- 16:22Because they were left to their own wisdom.
- 16:23Why does anyone anywhere except Him?
- 16:26Because the Son, in His sovereign good pleasure, decided
- 16:29to actively reveal the Father to them.
- 16:31So faith isn't the cause of the revelation.
- 16:34Faith is the result of the revelation.
- 16:36That is the crucial distinction. I don't see the light so that
- 16:39God will open my eyes. God opens my eyes so that I can
- 16:42see the light. Now whatever we get this deep
- 16:44into divine sovereignty, listeners start to feel the
- 16:48tension. So we need to move into Section
- 16:505 application and some of the common misconceptions for sure.
- 16:55The first charge that always comes up is anti
- 16:57intellectualism. People hear God hides it from
- 17:00the wise and they think OK so the goal is to be ignorant.
- 17:04I should stop reading books. Which would be a disaster.
- 17:07Jesus is not praising ignorance, He's condemning pride.
- 17:10There is a massive difference. You can be a certified genius
- 17:14and still be a babe in God's eyes.
- 17:16How does that work? The babe is about teachability.
- 17:19It's about your posture. APHD in physics can be a babe if
- 17:22they sit before scripture and say Lord compared to you I know
- 17:25nothing please teach me. And on the flip side, someone
- 17:28with very little formal education can be wise in their
- 17:32own eyes if they're stubborn and refused to be corrected by the
- 17:34word. Exactly.
- 17:35It has nothing to do with your IQ.
- 17:37It has everything to do with submission.
- 17:39The mind is a wonderful servant, but it's a terrible master.
- 17:43Reformed theology commands us to love God with all our minds, but
- 17:47those minds must first be submitted to the authority of
- 17:49God's Word. And the second charge is even
- 17:51heavier. It's the charge of fatalism.
- 17:53Look, if God chooses, and if Jesus only reveals to whom He
- 17:58wills, then why should I do anything?
- 18:00Why preach? Why pray for my lost friends?
- 18:03If they're chosen, they're chosen, and if they're not,
- 18:05they're not. We hear this all the time, but
- 18:07it assumes a disconnect that the Bible never ever makes.
- 18:11The Bible teaches that God ordains the ends, which is
- 18:14salvation, but he also ordains the means to that end.
- 18:17And the means are preaching and prayer and evangelism.
- 18:20Precisely. And if you look back at the
- 18:21text, Jesus doesn't treat the people of Capernaum like robots.
- 18:25He says woe to you. That implies real, genuine
- 18:29guilt. They are responsible for their
- 18:31rejection. So God's sovereignty doesn't
- 18:33erase human responsibility. Never.
- 18:35We are moral creatures. We make real choices based on
- 18:38our desires, and the desire of the unregenerate heart is to
- 18:41reject God. Their rejection is real and it's
- 18:43culpable. So the rejection is our fault.
- 18:46Yes, but the grace is all gods, and this actually kills
- 18:50fatalism. It doesn't create it.
- 18:53Think about it. If salvation ultimately depended
- 18:55on my powers of persuasion, I'd quit tomorrow.
- 18:58I can't change a human heart. I can't make a blind man see.
- 19:01But if God can. If God is the one who does the
- 19:03revealing, then there is hope for everyone.
- 19:06I can preach the gospel to the most hardened atheist, the most
- 19:09arrogant, wise man I know, and I can have confidence that in a
- 19:12single moment the Son of God can choose to reveal the Father to
- 19:15him, and that man will crumble in repentance and faith.
- 19:18So sovereignty actually fuels evangelism.
- 19:21It gives us the confidence that God can save even the hardest
- 19:24cases. It's the.
- 19:25Only thing that keeps us going. We preach because we know it's
- 19:29the very method the Son uses to do his sovereign revealing work.
- 19:32There's also a pretty stark warning in this passage about
- 19:35what we could call the idol of autonomous intellect.
- 19:38It is a severe warning. If you approach the Bible as a
- 19:41critic, you know, with your arms cross, trying to master it, it
- 19:45will remain A sealed book to you.
- 19:47You might learn the Greek, you might know the history, but you
- 19:49will not know the Lord of the book.
- 19:52You have to come as a beggar. You have to come as a child.
- 19:55Which sets up what might be the most beautiful and stunning
- 19:57transition in the entire gospel. That's Section 6, the bridge to
- 20:02the invitation. We've been climbing these steep,
- 20:05rocky cliffs of predestination and high Christology in verses
- 20:0925 to 27, and then without even taking a breath, we get verse
- 20:1428. Come to me, all you who labor
- 20:16and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
- 20:19I mean, most people have that verse on a coffee mug or a
- 20:21plaque somewhere, but they completely disconnect it from
- 20:24the verses that come right before it.
- 20:26They do. They love the gentle invitation,
- 20:28but they hate the hard sovereignty.
- 20:30But you cannot have one without the other.
- 20:33They are intrinsically linked. So why are they connected?
- 20:36How does the sovereignty set up the invitation?
- 20:38Look at the promise Jesus makes. I will give you rest.
- 20:42How can you possibly make a promise that grand?
- 20:44He can only make it because of what He just said in verse 27.
- 20:47All things have been delivered to me.
- 20:48Exactly. He has the authority to grant
- 20:51eternal rest because he runs the universe.
- 20:55If Jesus were just a nice moral teacher, he couldn't give you
- 20:58rest for your soul. But because He's the sovereign
- 21:01mediator to whom all things have been entrusted, He has the power
- 21:05and the authority to deliver on his invitation.
- 21:08The sovereignty is the foundation for the comfort.
- 21:11And as a paradox here that we just have to live with and
- 21:14embrace the sovereignty says I choose, the invitation says
- 21:18come. And both are 100% true.
- 21:21The invitation is genuine. Jesus stands with open arms to
- 21:24all but who actually comes? Who are the laboring and heavy
- 21:28laden? They're the ones who are tired
- 21:29of being wise. They.
- 21:30Are they are the ones who are crushed by the burden of their
- 21:33own self-reliance? They're tired of trying to
- 21:35figure it all out on their own. They're tired of trying to earn
- 21:37their way to God. They are the babes who have
- 21:39finally realized they are spiritually empty handed.
- 21:42And to them, to that person, Jesus says, come to me, stop
- 21:47striving. I will reveal the Father to you.
- 21:50I will give you the rest that you could never find in your own
- 21:52wisdom or your own works. You don't achieve this rest, you
- 21:55receive it as a gift. And that is the absolute beauty
- 21:58of sovereign grace. So let's try and bring this all
- 22:01together. We started with a crisis.
- 22:03The greatest ministry in the history of the world face what
- 22:06looked like total rejection. And Jesus didn't panic, He
- 22:09didn't despair. He praised, He anchored himself
- 22:13in the sovereign good pleasure of the Father.
- 22:15We saw that the Father actively hides the truth from the proud
- 22:18as an act of judgement, and He actively reveals it to the
- 22:22humble, the babes, as a display of His free grace.
- 22:25Then we saw the Son as the exclusive mediator.
- 22:27He's the only way to the Father, and he's the act of Revealer who
- 22:30sovereignly chooses to open blind eyes.
- 22:33And finally, we saw that all of this incredibly high theology
- 22:36isn't meant to be cold and abstract.
- 22:38It leads directly to the warmest, most gentle invitation
- 22:41in all of Scripture. The God who sovereignly chooses
- 22:44is the very same God who says come and rest.
- 22:47It just changes everything about how you view your own salvation.
- 22:51It moves the center of gravity from I was smart enough to
- 22:54figure it out to I was lost. And for his own good reasons, he
- 22:59came and found me. It creates a sense of awe, a
- 23:02sense of wonder. If you're a Christian listening
- 23:05to this, your conversion was the miracle.
- 23:07It was the greatest miracle of all.
- 23:08So I want to leave you, our listener, with a final thought
- 23:11to chew on. We've covered a lot of heavy,
- 23:13heavy doctrine today, but try to bring this down to your prayer
- 23:16life tonight. When you get on your knees to
- 23:18pray, just stop and realize this.
- 23:21If you love the gospel, if you see any beauty in the person of
- 23:25Jesus Christ, it is not because you were clever.
- 23:27It's not because you were more spiritual than your neighbor.
- 23:30It is because the Lord of Heaven and Earth, the sovereign God of
- 23:33the universe, stopped and performed a specific personal
- 23:36miracle of revelation in your heart.
- 23:39He chose to show you what he justly hid from others who are
- 23:42no more sinful than you are. That thought alone should
- 23:45absolutely crush your pride and cause your gratitude to just
- 23:48explode. How does that reality change the
- 23:51way you pray? You can't pray with any sense of
- 23:53arrogance or entitlement anymore.
- 23:55You can only pray with staggering, speechless thanks.
- 23:59And that's really the goal of Reform thinking to think God's
- 24:03thoughts after him and to let that thinking lead us into
- 24:06deeper worship. We really hope this deep dive
- 24:08has challenged you and encouraged you to become a babe
- 24:12in the very best sense of that word.
- 24:14Thanks so much for listening. We'll.
- 24:15See you next time.
