- 0:11Hello friends, great to have your company on this Monday the
- 0:1524th of March. How you going?
- 0:18I hope you're going well. It is going to be a good week
- 0:21because this week friends, you betcha we are diving back into
- 0:26the Gospel of John. And today we are going to unwrap
- 0:30a little present for us, which is the very first of the deep
- 0:33theological discussions that Jesus has in this Gospel.
- 0:37And this is the one where he speaks with Nicodemus.
- 0:39And each of these theological discussions has a particular
- 0:43pertinent focus, a question that someone asks Jesus and then a
- 0:47statement that Jesus gives to to draw them deeper into an
- 0:50understanding. And today that will centre
- 0:53around being born again. And then of course that cracker
- 0:58about how it is that God loved the world and what he did for
- 1:01the world. Oh, good stuff friends.
- 1:03Yes, how about let's dive straight into it.
- 1:07Reading together John chapter 3. There was a man named Nicodemus,
- 1:23a Jewish religious leader who is a Pharisee.
- 1:26After dark one evening he came to speak with Jesus Rabbi.
- 1:31He said we all know that God has sent you to teach us.
- 1:35Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.
- 1:40Jesus replied. I tell you the truth, unless you
- 1:44are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.
- 1:49What do you mean? Exclaimed Nicodemus.
- 1:52How can an old man go back into his mother's womb and be born
- 1:56again? Jesus replied.
- 1:59I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being
- 2:04born of water and the spirit. Humans can reproduce only human
- 2:09life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life, so
- 2:14don't be surprised when I say you must be born again.
- 2:18The wind blows wherever it wants, just as you can hear the
- 2:22wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it's going.
- 2:26So you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit.
- 2:31How are these things possible? Nicodemus asked.
- 2:35Jesus replied, You are a respected Jewish teacher, and
- 2:40yet you don't understand these things.
- 2:43I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet
- 2:48you won't believe our testimony. But if you don't believe me when
- 2:52I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if
- 2:56I tell you about heavenly things?
- 2:59No one has ever gone to heaven and returned, but the Son of Man
- 3:04has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the
- 3:08bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man
- 3:12must be lifted up so that everyone who believes in Him
- 3:17will have eternal life. For this is how God loved the
- 3:21world. He gave His one and only Son so
- 3:26that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have
- 3:31eternal life. God sent His Son into the world
- 3:35not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.
- 3:40There is no judgement against anyone who believes in Him, but
- 3:45anyone who does not believe in Him has already been judged for
- 3:49not believing in God's one and only Son, and the judgement is
- 3:53based on this fact. God's light came into the world,
- 3:59but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their
- 4:02actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light
- 4:07and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.
- 4:12But those who do what is right come to the light so others can
- 4:16see that they are doing what God wants.
- 4:20Then Jesus and his disciples left Jerusalem and went into the
- 4:24Judean countryside. Jesus spent some time with them
- 4:28there baptising people. At this time John the Baptist
- 4:32was baptising at Aeon near Salem because there was plenty of
- 4:36water there and people kept coming to him for baptism.
- 4:40This was before John was thrown into prison.
- 4:44A debate broke out between John's disciples and a certain
- 4:47Jew over ceremonial cleansing. Sir John's disciples came to him
- 4:52and said, Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan
- 4:56River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptising
- 5:01people, and everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.
- 5:06John replied, No one can receive anything unless God gives it
- 5:11from heaven. You yourselves know how plainly
- 5:14I told you I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the
- 5:19way for him. It is the bridegroom who marries
- 5:23the bride, and the bridegroom's friend is simply glad to stand
- 5:27with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy
- 5:32at his success. He must become greater and
- 5:36greater, and I must become less and less.
- 5:40He has come from above and is greater than anyone else.
- 5:45We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but He
- 5:50has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else.
- 5:54He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but how few
- 5:59believe what he tells them. Anyone who accepts his testimony
- 6:04can affirm that God is true, for he is sent by God.
- 6:09He speaks God's words, for God gives him the Spirit without
- 6:13limit. The Father loves his Son and has
- 6:17put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God's
- 6:22Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn't obey the Son,
- 6:27we'll never experience eternal life, but remain under God's
- 6:31angry judgement. Jesus, your words are a little
- 6:44mind blowing for us as everything around us in the way
- 6:49that the world is built repays us for what we do.
- 6:54And when we do good, we get a pat in the back.
- 6:56And when we mess up, we get a kick in the pants.
- 6:59But here we hear your words that say you have come into the world
- 7:04not to judge it or judge us, but to save us, and that in you
- 7:13there is no judgement. That is such a wild concept.
- 7:19And Lord, I pray that your presence, your light, as John
- 7:23says, would just shine into our lives and that every day you
- 7:27would shine your love, your presence, your grace, your
- 7:31transforming life so that we would be changed people and that
- 7:37our lives would reflect that. So today, Lord, in the next
- 7:42hour, in the next hours, all through our days, I pray that
- 7:48you transform us so that we can truly be beacons of your
- 7:52Kingdom, living out the way that you would want us to live,
- 7:58always knowing that in You we are safe, we are saved, and we
- 8:04live in your forgiving embrace. We thank you, Jesus, for that
- 8:09wonderful gift that you have given us, and we pray all of
- 8:12this in your saving name, Amen.
