- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon Podcast, a First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:11learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15Definitely a unique one. Believe in cancelling church for
- 0:19a snowstorm. Yeah.
- 0:22Spoiler alert, there's another one predicted for next weekend.
- 0:26You mean like this coming weekend?
- 0:28Yeah. Because apparently winter
- 0:31decided it's only good to snow on the weekends.
- 0:36Great, but. We'll cross that bridge when we
- 0:41get there. I can't wait to go to Cuba so I
- 0:46was wondering because this was a very unique Sunday for that
- 0:51reason. Do you have any church services
- 0:57or church functions growing up or while in ministry that stand
- 1:04out? Maybe not because of what
- 1:06happened within it, but the circumstances revolving around
- 1:10it. And you can't cop out and say
- 1:12COVID it's. Going to make me sound really
- 1:14old but. Too late.
- 1:19You know, growing up, it was just so different.
- 1:20If we had a snowstorm like this, we just canceled church and
- 1:25everybody stay at home. You know, pastor got to preach
- 1:28that sermon the next week or whatever.
- 1:30And how did you tell people that?
- 1:32Church was kept. Oh yeah.
- 1:33Through the phone chain. Yeah.
- 1:36One person would call 6 people, then each of those people would
- 1:38call 6 people. And you know the good old day?
- 1:43Yeah, back in the day. No emails, text message blasts.
- 1:49No Facebook announcement. Was great because it also like
- 1:54connects more. Can you not just like charges
- 1:56cancelled and hang up on a brother or sister in Christ?
- 1:59Like it would stimulate some minor talking.
- 2:04Yeah, I don't know. I never had to do it.
- 2:06Oh no, it was great. But other than that.
- 2:09I can't really think of anything specific.
- 2:11I go peak millennial and, you know, talk about the Blizzard of
- 2:1596. Either and say Y2K.
- 2:18Oh yeah, that that was an interesting time.
- 2:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:23No I was thinking I don't remember snow, bad snowstorms
- 2:28affecting church but also could just be my memory.
- 2:32I was thinking like post church fire figuring out that for
- 2:37Sunday and what was available, how do we meet, where do we
- 2:41meet? And if I remember correctly, I
- 2:45can't remember if the Baptist Church hosted us for like a
- 2:52special, all the churches in town coming together kind of
- 2:56service. I don't know if that was like a
- 2:58Sunday morning, but I remember very shortly after our Sunday
- 3:02mornings for a little bit was in the Pitman Theatre.
- 3:06And we met in the Pitman Theatre for church.
- 3:09And that was neat because they kind of gave us full reign of
- 3:13the building and so like got to go backstage and see the
- 3:18downstairs and kind of the booth and all that kind of stuff.
- 3:23But now that's neat. For those that don't understand
- 3:26movie magic, we did not meet on Sunday morning to live stream
- 3:32you a service. Correct.
- 3:35Can you describe the? Making.
- 3:37Of. The making the.
- 3:38Scenes of Sunday service. Yeah.
- 3:42So I think it was on Wednesday that I, I began to keep closer
- 3:51tabs on what was happening with the weather and sent an e-mail
- 3:57out to Will and Aaron and, and you Jeremy, and just said, hey,
- 4:07I'm thinking we might be looking at canceling our in person
- 4:10gatherings on Sunday. Permanently.
- 4:14No, just for this week and and asked what kind of availability
- 4:20you guys had on Saturday to be able to record something.
- 4:25And so that's what we ended up doing.
- 4:28As you know, by Thursday morning we had made the decision to full
- 4:33stop to just, you know, pivot there.
- 4:37And so we gathered on Saturday night and ran through a couple
- 4:43things and then sat down and just ran it like we were running
- 4:48the live service. Anyway, we had a small handful
- 4:52of people there who were connected with, you know, people
- 4:55who were helping in the service and stuff.
- 4:58So I wasn't preaching to a completely empty sanctuary.
- 5:01Which is why I never looked at the camera.
- 5:06Did I not? Rarely.
- 5:07Rarely. Yeah, that's OK.
- 5:09It's so far away. It is, and I never know which
- 5:12one we're looking at because we have the 2.
- 5:14It's always the one on our left when we're standing on the
- 5:17stage. Yeah.
- 5:19The other one, yeah. But it was interesting like even
- 5:22just like it being dark and not being like one of the annual
- 5:26night services that we have. It was interesting having the
- 5:30lights and going through it, but with seven people in the pews or
- 5:34something like that. And yeah, the one thing I felt
- 5:38bad because the podium mic or whatever it's called didn't get
- 5:44put on as I went up to do scripture.
- 5:47So I said you may be seated, you may stand if you want, or
- 5:51continue cooking, whatever you're doing.
- 5:54And the mic didn't turn on until it says cooking or whatever.
- 5:59I was just like, Oh my gosh. You can hear just a little bit.
- 6:03Man, I figured, you know, what are the unique things that this
- 6:08service kind of brings to the table?
- 6:11But also trying to have people focus in on the important parts
- 6:16of what it means instead of just background noise in the house.
- 6:19But yeah, you know, to lock into.
- 6:22Yeah, always doing and so. Yeah.
- 6:25It definitely took me back to COVID though, and and it was an
- 6:29intentional choice not to say that in the midst of the service
- 6:33because I felt like that would have derailed us a little bit,
- 6:36but. But it wasn't nearly as bad for
- 6:38me as recording stuff for COVID because A, it was in the
- 6:42sanctuary and B, the camera so far away you don't think about
- 6:46it. And I've practiced my sermons in
- 6:49the sanctuary empty before. So it just felt like almost like
- 6:53practicing instead of it being the final product because I
- 6:57don't we've probably mentioned at some point and the archives
- 7:00of this podcast that during COVID when we were doing like a
- 7:03pre made service and we had like.
- 7:06At the previous church we served at the.
- 7:08Previous church we served and like a camera in your face and
- 7:12you went in and you recorded your section.
- 7:14Yeah, I am not meant to be in front of a camera.
- 7:20A voice or a face for radio? Oh my gosh.
- 7:23Thanks. Yeah, it was.
- 7:26Just reading scripture would take me 3045 minutes to get
- 7:31through a single take. Not because I was picking
- 7:33passages that were that long. Oh no, no, they were, they were
- 7:37normal size passages. I just was going to throw up
- 7:43heart rate at 140 beats per minute.
- 7:46Just full panic. It was one of my least favorite
- 7:50things in ministry. Yeah, my my least favorite part
- 7:55of that was having to sit on the couch with my family on Sunday
- 7:57mornings and watch it. Watch me.
- 8:00No, Watch me watch. Me on my final.
- 8:05Because pretty quick into that that COVID time I I took on the
- 8:10lead preaching. Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
- 8:14Yeah, and so to sit there and watch myself preach as to a
- 8:20camera in an office room a lot like IS.
- 8:24It's rough. Is not ideal.
- 8:26Yeah, I know. So, So I, I enjoyed those unique
- 8:29aspects to it because my first reaction, I didn't know the
- 8:34storm was going to happen. And you were like, I think we're
- 8:37going to cancel church on Sunday.
- 8:39I was like, awesome. Why?
- 8:41Like I didn't even know. For me, in my head, I was like,
- 8:44God's doing something. He's moving.
- 8:46We're switching it up from the status quo.
- 8:48Like where is he leading us this Sunday?
- 8:51And you're like, we might get 1 to 15 inches of snow.
- 8:54And I was like, oh, OK, sounds good.
- 9:00Yeah. Yeah, I, I like it when things
- 9:02switch up. I think it opens up
- 9:04opportunities for us to either appreciate the norm or be more
- 9:11open up to different things God might want to do.
- 9:14And so, you know, even just having, like, some youth that
- 9:18are in the neighborhood walk over and help shovel the snow
- 9:22and bond in that way and play some games in the parlor room
- 9:26and whatever to serve the church but also gain some fellowship, I
- 9:32think is really fun. And so, yeah, just opens up some
- 9:35unique opportunities. And for those that completely
- 9:39ignored your sermon and skips on a service because they didn't
- 9:46want to do it online, but they missed the podcast and they're
- 9:49joining us now, could you give us either like a minute summary
- 9:52or like 3 main points you want to get across?
- 9:55You can't have all 5. Go back and listen to that that
- 10:00episode of the podcast. So here is my summary at the end
- 10:05of the the sermon that I think kind of sums it up.
- 10:09God is speaking and he wants you to recognize his voice speaking
- 10:12to you in whatever way it comes because he wants you to know him
- 10:17and to walk with him in a relationship of conversational
- 10:20intimacy. But that doesn't just happen on
- 10:23its own. Just like any skill, we have to
- 10:25learn to recognize God's voice among the various voices that
- 10:29are competing for our attention. And so in the sermon, I, I went
- 10:35on to give some different points about how that story from First
- 10:41Samuel helps us, gives us a case study kind of of, yeah, of some
- 10:47things we can learn that help us recognize the voice of God.
- 10:50But I think that's the most important part, is that God
- 10:53wants us to recognize his voice and he wants to shape us and
- 10:58mold us through it. Yeah.
- 11:00And in that relationship. That was a wild part to me that
- 11:04I didn't click, even though I've read through the story where
- 11:10Samuel grew up literally in the church.
- 11:14Yeah, like, not, oh, I go to church every day, but like, live
- 11:19there. I was raised in it.
- 11:21And yet, how old was he when he heard God's voice?
- 11:27We don't know exactly but. Applied like what?
- 11:29Teen years. Yeah, maybe 1213, pretty early.
- 11:33Yeah. And so growing up in the church,
- 11:39and it says that he didn't know the Lord's word.
- 11:42Yeah, the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
- 11:45And so it's not that he hadn't heard it, not that he hadn't
- 11:48been around his entire life. Yeah.
- 11:52Can you touch on that? Can you explain the difference
- 11:56for the people? Because that struck me I think
- 12:01the most out of the whole serum because I feel like that is a
- 12:06large part of our big sea church culture.
- 12:10And people aren't even aware that that's an issue or a hurdle
- 12:16or that they that they haven't had it revealed to them, but
- 12:22they think because they are familiar with the text that it
- 12:27has been. Yeah.
- 12:28Well, I, I think there's a couple things going on there
- 12:31because first of all, like we hear the word of the Lord and
- 12:38our mind automatically goes to Scripture.
- 12:42I don't know that that's exactly what the writer of, of First
- 12:46Samuel was getting at. I think Scripture played less of
- 12:53a role at that stage in Israel's history because, you know, at
- 12:59most they had the Pentateuch, the first five books of the
- 13:02Bible that Moses wrote. They didn't have the Psalms,
- 13:07they didn't have the history, but they were, they were living
- 13:10those books right as we go on. The prophets didn't come until
- 13:15hundreds of years later. And so I think we have to make
- 13:19the distinction that the primary way God was speaking to his
- 13:26people in those days wasn't necessarily through Scripture.
- 13:30And so that's the first second thing is the way the the story
- 13:37frames it is that this was a period of time in which they
- 13:41weren't even the people of Israel weren't even getting that
- 13:43many visions and revelations from God.
- 13:46All right. There's one that's talked about
- 13:49in the chapter before this that I think plays a key role there.
- 13:54But it's not like everyone was hearing from God at that time,
- 13:59except for Samuel. It was the the exception at that
- 14:05point. And part of the dynamic there
- 14:07is, you know, this is clearly Old Testament period.
- 14:11So it's before Jesus, it's well before Pentecost.
- 14:16And so the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, operated in a different
- 14:20way in those days. We can read all through
- 14:24Scripture about how the Spirit would come and rest on someone
- 14:28for a specific time or task or to fill a certain role.
- 14:35But then even, you know, after that task was done, the Spirit's
- 14:39presence would leave. In a sense, it wasn't that same
- 14:42indwelling presence that we talked about after Pentecost as
- 14:47Christians. And so you get stories in like
- 14:50Judges where, for instance, like Samuel or not Samuel, Samson,
- 14:55the Holy Spirit would come on Samson, he'd deliver the people
- 14:58from the Israelites, and then the Spirit would leave until the
- 15:02next time. And there would be this kind of
- 15:05episodic anointing that would come on Samson to be able to do
- 15:11what God was calling him to do in that moment.
- 15:13And so I think that shifts things as well.
- 15:17But I think with Samuel here, we begin to see more of what God
- 15:24desired and God intended for his relationship with people as
- 15:29Samuel grew to know the voice of God and walk with him.
- 15:33What did the process look like for you to get to know the voice
- 15:38of God? I think through my teen years,
- 15:43there were some very specific instances where God spoke very
- 15:51clearly to me that were kind of life shifting kind of moments.
- 15:55It's not that I was necessarily expecting it or seeking it even
- 16:03in those moments, but there were, you know, very specific
- 16:08times I, I can remember where God said something very clearly
- 16:15and we had a little bit of a back and forth.
- 16:18I wouldn't say at that point it was the norm.
- 16:20It wasn't the the normal way that I related with God.
- 16:24I'd say it was probably during our time in Uganda that it
- 16:31really became a normal part of the way I interacted with God.
- 16:39Part of that was through some of the missionaries that we were
- 16:44serving with who kind of helped us see how God wants to have
- 16:49that kind of relationship with us.
- 16:50Some of those through some books we were reading that kind of
- 16:55laid out. Here's what it can look like in
- 16:57a normal ongoing kind of way. So that was, you know, close to
- 17:03my early 30s, so some in seminary, but I'd say it was
- 17:07really in Uganda where kind of took hold, became normal part I.
- 17:14Don't have a great pivot to this question.
- 17:17Are you familiar with Craig Groshell?
- 17:19Yeah. Are you trying to be as ripped
- 17:22as him from the pulpit? Absolutely not.
- 17:25I would never make it. I know somebody your sweater
- 17:30knows. Last night I was like, it looks
- 17:32like he's flexing on us and that sweater.
- 17:35See, and I looked at it, I said, well, I never realized how much
- 17:38that sweater with it's like brown and Gray kind of yarn
- 17:42matches my hair. And now everyone on the pod.
- 17:49If you don't know, you can Google Craig Rochelle.
- 17:52He's a pastor, isn't. He's a pastor of the church that
- 17:54started the you version. Yeah, Life Church.
- 17:57The Bible app, yeah. So you can thank him and his
- 18:00team over there for that. That's blessed.
- 18:03I'm sure everyone listening at some point.
- 18:06Well, do you want to answer that last one about how you learned
- 18:10to hear the voice got or what that process look like?
- 18:13Yeah. I can share about that and
- 18:16everyone already knows. I mean, I think I edited it out
- 18:19of the last podcast, but for me, I communication with God, we'll
- 18:27call it that because for me, I still, I still split it into
- 18:32categories because it just feels different in my experience from
- 18:36like what I call Holy Spirit nudges where it's like pushing
- 18:40something and then there's like messages from God.
- 18:45And then I guess it may be even a third, like a Holy Spirit
- 18:48speaking through me like in the moment, not like giving me a
- 18:51message and then I pass it on, but like almost feels like I'm
- 18:57witnessing what I'm saying. I almost feel slightly out of
- 19:02body. So I would say the first time I
- 19:05experienced that was actually the first one I experienced
- 19:09where I was at passion. Everything comes back to
- 19:12passion. I was at either my first or
- 19:15second passion and I, I used to go so I would drive myself and
- 19:19either in my Civic or my Cavalier all the way down to
- 19:22Atlanta. Sleep.
- 19:23I couldn't afford anything. Sleep in my car when I got
- 19:26tired, power napped and kept on trucking, Stay at my godparents
- 19:31outside of the city. And at that point, Passion was
- 19:36attempting to do small groups, which was great, but virtually
- 19:43impossible to do. So they've rented out the
- 19:45Conference Center next to the stadium.
- 19:47And after the night session and before the morning session, we'd
- 19:51go over there, you'd get split up into groups of 5 to 8000.
- 19:56And then when in that room of 5 to 8000, they'd shuffle you
- 20:00around into groups of like 6 to 8, and that would become your
- 20:03group. And you'd get to meet people
- 20:05from all over the country and all that kind of stuff.
- 20:08And was in some group and The thing is like everyone would go
- 20:14the first night or most people would go the first night and
- 20:17then no one would go after that. No one wants to wake up super
- 20:19early before a full day of action, all that kind.
- 20:22So it always dwindle. And then anyway, point of the
- 20:26story being had a group of girls and mine that just happened.
- 20:33I think we had one guy, but he stopped showing up after the
- 20:36first night And we were, we were praying, I think it was like the
- 20:40last morning or something and I prayed and it just flowed.
- 20:45I don't even remember what I said.
- 20:46I don't think I could tell you a minute after I said it, what I
- 20:50said in that prayer. And then at the end of it, I was
- 20:54like thrown off and confused by my prayer because I'd never
- 20:59experienced that before. And then like every single girl
- 21:04was like, how did you know about that?
- 21:06How did you know about that? And like something in the like
- 21:09different things in that prayer was speaking into things going
- 21:13on in their lives that I had no idea was going on.
- 21:17And I was just like reeling, like what just happened?
- 21:20And then I came back to my pastor and I was like, have you
- 21:24experienced this? Like, is this normal?
- 21:26Like what? I didn't know what that was
- 21:29like. No one prepped me for it.
- 21:30No one gave me the anticipation for it or experiencing or
- 21:36yearning for it in the church. So that was the first one.
- 21:41And then the Columbia story everyone's already heard.
- 21:45Heard from him on balcony, turned around thinking it was
- 21:49someone from my group, but no one, no one else was outside
- 21:52with me. And then after that, I started
- 21:56after that and after living in Columbia started like yearning
- 21:59for his direction, not only in life, like big decisions, but
- 22:06also daily decisions and daily interactions and starting to
- 22:11pray ahead of them to be like God if you want to say or do
- 22:14anything like I trust you with this time.
- 22:17And yeah, there's been ebbs and flows where I feel like more
- 22:23frequent. But also I think if I'm honest,
- 22:27that frequency very heavily correlates with times that I am
- 22:36in closer personal relationship with God versus like being in
- 22:40the regular. Like the the amount of church
- 22:41activity stays the same, but personal time with God and that
- 22:45relationship more frequently, hearing and getting nudges and
- 22:50all of that kind of stuff. And then you just get to see the
- 22:54fruit of it, which I think is like my favorite part to
- 22:58witness. And then the harder part to
- 23:00navigate and make sure that he receives all the glory and and
- 23:03that I don't get any or convince myself that I did it.
- 23:08And so, yeah, that's one of the things I love is just like
- 23:11witnessing God use someone like me to do incredible stuff and
- 23:19push people closer to him. Yeah.
- 23:22So that's that's been my experience thus far.
- 23:25Without getting into all the thickets of it, how can the
- 23:29people, if someone is yearning for what we've been talking
- 23:33about in this series, step one, like we're going to end this
- 23:38podcast now. They're going to skip the outro
- 23:40part because they've heard it a million times.
- 23:43What should they stop and do in this moment that can get them
- 23:48one step closer? Stop and listen, you know, maybe
- 23:56say a 10 second prayer of God. I'm not Samuel, but I'm Scott
- 24:07and I'm here and if you would want to speak to me, your
- 24:12servant's listening and then just give him some time.
- 24:19Don't put on worship music. Don't you know, give up after 10
- 24:25seconds. Give it some time and begin to
- 24:30build that into your normal life, you know, and when you sit
- 24:37down to read your Bible for the day, you know, God, I'm here and
- 24:42I'm listening. I don't just want to read the
- 24:43words on the page. I want you to speak to me and
- 24:48read your Bible, pause on the things that kind of seem to like
- 24:52jump out to you. And you know, if, if there's
- 24:55something you're saying, God, what are you trying to say to me
- 24:58through this? And then wait and listen.
- 25:03Yeah, I think. Like say something now.
- 25:05God, nothing. OK, moving on. 32 OK.
- 25:11But yeah, I think it can be so easy to turn what we call maybe
- 25:17our devotional time or a quiet time or whatever, too easy to
- 25:22turn that into a checkbox of I pray about these things on my
- 25:26list. I read this much of the Bible
- 25:28each day. Say another prayer.
- 25:30I'm good to go for the day. And that's good, right?
- 25:34But it but if we really want to hear God, we've got to give him
- 25:40space to speak. He's he's not always going to
- 25:45come in with a 2 by 4 and smack you upside the head.
- 25:49I don't know if you've ever had the experience of.
- 25:53Getting hit by two by four in the head.
- 25:57No. But trying to tell a story or
- 26:00something or tell somebody something that is really
- 26:05meaningful to you and getting interrupted over and over again.
