- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: Tristan, how you doing after that big win, man?
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: I am still so hyped right now.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've sat down since that game ended.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: I've been on Cloud9, and all I gotta ask you, Steven, is play the song.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: We are playing the song, baby!
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech has defeated number four UT in Austin.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: We are better, my friend.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: We are so much better than the Longhorns.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Man, does it feel good to beat your biggest rival, especially like that, man?
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: It doesn't get any sweeter than an absolute heartbreaker for the guys in orange.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Anytime we're beating UT, it's a good day.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna get you that full game recap here in a bit, but we had some news to start off this week's pod.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: TTU tennis, ranked number 24 in preseason, man.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Go tennis.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't think you and I's uh tennis knowledge goes beyond the basics, but hey, I like hearing tech being good at sports.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: And one thing that really stands out with tech sports is we we seem to have a real knack for these kind of offshoot games.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: So you know, we're just really good at any sport that's not called football.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: That's all I gotta say.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: We don't even play the sport.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: But any hey, but anytime we're ranked preseason for any sport, we said the same thing with like golf and stuff, you know, it's just it's just good stuff.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: So you wanna you wanna you know root for these smaller sports that don't get the recognition that they normally do.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: So go tennis, you know, yeah, go tennis, number 24, baby.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: But um, our second piece of news, Kristen Davis from Texas Tech Soccer, drafted by Racing Louisville FC of the women's the National Women's Soccer League.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: So, how about that for Kristen Davis, another soccer star coming out of Texas Tech?
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Another professional athlete coming out of Texas Tech.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: So I hope she can come out there and just rock the world and rep that scarlet and black, like she did so well here in Texas Tech.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: And you know, in especially in a country that you know takes women's soccer pretty seriously.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, with the our national team is is is is world class, so it'd be super cool to see her maybe work her way to that.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: But uh, congratulations to her getting drafted to play it in the big time, yeah, no doubt.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: And actually, this uh this team racing Louisville FC, their first game coming up here in 2021.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: They're a brand new team, so kind of cool for her to kind of make her mark on a brand new franchise within the sport.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Absolutely laying the foundation, you know, starting off fresh.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: That's really cool.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Hope she can leave her mark.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Go be Janine Becky 2.0.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then our third piece of news we got another football commit, another JUCO guy from Coffeyville Community College, Matt Keeler, offensive tackle, beef up that offensive line a little bit.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: And unfortunate news, Jacob Brustowski, Brustowski, I don't know how you say it, but he underwent Tommy John surgery and will not be pitching for tech this year.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: He was another JUCO transfer.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, and that's just unfortunate to hear, man.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: But the the good news is uh I don't think there's gonna be a lack of talent in that bullpen under Tim Tadlock.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: So all we can ask for is hope he gets better and then just comes out wailing next year.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: No worries on the on the baseball front.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, we'll be getting some more information on the team and everything getting started here in the next couple weeks.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: So, but the big news and the biggest news for Texas Tech we beat the Longhorns, number four UT.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: We take them down 79 to 77.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Mac McClung hits the game winner.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Unbelievable game for our boys.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, just an all-around fantastic game, man.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: One for the memories, and I don't think there's any argument to be made on who the MVP was.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: With a clutch shot like that, Mac McClung is really living up to his hype, and that's why we know him as the mackerel.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: The mackerel.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: He's over here flopping around, getting to the line, making threes, man.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Which that last shot was a three.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: It was a three.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: The refs trying to rip us off.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: But we won anyway.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Conspiracies are made on this.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Of course, it's against UT where it goes to a two, you know.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Obviously, clutch three, but whatever.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: You know, the refs can't stop us.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of tech fans had an issue with the uh the refing in that game, but hey, a true team wins through and through no matter what.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: You always got to go through adversity on these things.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Um, but man, what a gutsy win! Like overall, just our our guys really took uh what wasn't a good first half, really, by a lot of team standards, uh, and and got it together and made the halftime adjustments and really came out with a and with a comeback win.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, we were down 10 at half, and UT was shooting lights out.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: It looks like we were gonna be blown out of the building, but we came out on top, man.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: And it what what really stood out to me in in the first and the second half is we were never out of the game, even whenever it was looking like, oh, this this doesn't look good, it never looked that bad because we we still stayed in it, we still fought that that that grit really played in, even though we weren't playing our best ball, we were still in the game, we were still in arm's length of the win, and it obviously showed out in the very end.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we would have wanted a better showing in the first half.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: The second half is what truly pulls pulled us up to a win, but uh it's hard to complain whenever you make a turnaround like they did.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: You know, that takes some real determination and talk about uh an applaud to the coaching staff.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: And I mean, credit to Mac McClung and Terrence Shannon for really keeping us in that first half.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, there were there were moments, and that's what the good teams do, they stick around, man.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: They keep even though you know some they're hitting everything and some of our shots aren't falling, we somehow find a way to keep in the game and not let them blow us out, and that's the dog in us.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: And so, man, just a just a big time performance from a lot of our guys, really.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: As you always say, uh, no matter how bad we come out on the offense, our defense is gonna keep us in the game.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: So, I think that kind of was showcase showcased last night, especially against a UT game that is awesome, uh UT team that is awesome.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so then they they did not play, it's not like they played badly, so they they their players were going off just as much as we had some superstars ourselves.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: So a true team win, and I'm glad that some of our guys were in win mentality the whole time, like Mac.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: So it's it's just an incredible performance.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Couldn't be more proud to rep the Scarlet and Black today.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: And there's also something to say for the guys that really started off horribly and came back, guys like Kyler Edwards, who had a really just a really bad first three-fourths of that game.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Not it it looked like Kansas 2.0, man.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was coming in, wasn't shooting, wasn't knocking down the the few shots that he did took take.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: He was stopping the flow on offense.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: You know, him in that first half, it was it was sometimes it was Max, sometimes it was Kyler, sometimes it was Terrence.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: And we just we hold that ball at the top of the key for the first 10 to 15 seconds of the shot clock and don't move, no one's moving in a motion offense, and that doesn't work for us.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: And so I was really upset with Kyler for about three-fourths of this game, but then just like him to come back and make two threes right as soon as I'm talking mess, you know, get the big steal down the stretch.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: He really came in and and uh showed that he's a real veteran on this team.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: It's really frustrating to watch Kyler perform uh badly because he's the guy that we put the most uh expectations on.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: He's the veteran, he's the leader of the team.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: So ever he performs badly, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: But he he stepped up when the when it counted, which is what leaders are made out of.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm glad he never lost the faith and just pressed on to get uh to help.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: He was a true part in the win.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: So it's I just come on, man.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Let's let's play the whole game like that, man.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Let's go, you know, lead the whole time.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that game, I mean, UT in that first half just shot absolutely lights out.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Eight for 14 from three, I think they were.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: And those threes, you know, we really we really stopped him in that second half from shooting so many threes.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: We should talk about Andrew Jones had 18 points in that first half and only took one shot in that second half.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: And that's the adjustments that Chris Beard has on this team.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: That's the stuff that you'd love to see.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: Should mention also Kevin McCullough had a great game overall.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: I think he finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, another close to double-double game for him, showing that he is so important to this roster and that we would have loved to have him against Kansas and against Houston.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Kind of makes you think of how the season would look had he had he been in there a whole time.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like the Houston game was close to begin with, and and I I just really wish we could have had him because gosh knows what what we we could be maybe looking at in an undefeated season, but I digress.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Um, we're we're we're we're trending in the right way, and that's all you can ask at this point in the season.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: So, and it wasn't just him either.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, look at Marcos Santos Silva, he was down there in the post battling some big UT guys, and that's what we want him to do.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: And man, was he being a bully down there in the best way?
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean, sometimes with him, he goes up against guys that are taller than him every single game.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, six foot ten, Jericho Sims was really having his way with us in that first half, getting to the line.
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: He wasn't making his free throws because he's not a very good free throw shooter, you know.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: But and Marcus fouled out, but he was playing physically and he was battling down there the whole game.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Got to give him credit when when he's got Jericho Sims and and Greg Brown, both of which are six nine and six ten, uh, just and they could jump out of the building too.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: So Marcus had to work hard and he did a great job.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: And not to mention Marcus making those free throws.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: I know I was so hyped.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Every time one in, I jumped off my couch.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because yeah, because I just I'd never expect him to make free throws.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: I just don't when every time he's at the line, I just expect a miss.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: And so when he can go four or five from the line, that's just a it's a huge boost for the guys.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: And and that's been a woe that we have been complaining about for most of the season.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: I'm glad we don't have to sit here and complain about the free throws anymore.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, whenever a guy like Marcus is making them, you know, the uh there's been a real turnaround.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: I can't imagine what practices have been like since uh the the bad free throw of the games, you know.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure, no doubt.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Uh Tyreek Smith had some pretty good minutes as well.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Micah Peavy, he had a pretty bad game overall, was missing a lot of defensive assignments, was uh, you know, his his shot is what it is, and he was just making some mistakes there.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: And he is a freshman, he's playing against one of the best teams in the country.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: But really, for him to come out and make that big play in the second half late, for him to get that offensive rebound and put back in a layup, you know, that's that's huge for the freshman.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: And we got to get him in games like this so he's ready for when we have more games like this, which we're about to have one, you know, we're about to play number the number two country or number two team in the country.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: So uh for him to get these valuable minutes for a freshman and and really just uh you know work hard and and do what he needs to do, it's it's good to see.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: This is the biggest win of the year, and I think it's that kind of translates into this being the biggest game of these young men's career.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: So that was the biggest win they've ever had in their lives at this point now.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: So it's it's really great to put in the box and take with you because especially whenever they're they're they're they're the they're the Kyler Edwards, you know, in the future, they take the these moments and they just learn off of them.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited about that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: And it's really it's great to see some freshmen stepping up already because they got bright futures ahead of them.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, for sure.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: So should mention this is the first time that we beat Texas three times in a row in Austin since 1976.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: So I suppose if we do it next year, that's the record.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I would hope so.
- 12:46SPEAKER_03: We so we are owning the Longhorns in the Frank Irwin Center, also known as the Concrete Flan.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: The Red Raiders enjoy some flan.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I know I enjoy some flan, so I'm glad we go there and eat.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: It's a delicious Mexican dessert, indeed.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, you just attacks it attach Mexican food to anything, and it's probably gonna be delicious.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: But we should that was talking Mexican food here on the talk of podcasts.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: You can chelata no, but uh Veraday sauce, yes, Verde sauce, always.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: But uh, that was also the first top five road, top five road win in tech history for our Red Raiders.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: Man, Chris Beard just keeps getting more accomplishments, and it's against his alma mater, our biggest rival.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Man, does it it tastes so good to get that record in Austin?
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Man, it's a place that Texas Tech has a hard time playing in in any sport.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: So I'm as long as we're beating the longhorns and making history, I think the Red Raider nation is about as happy as can be.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, tech Twitter was on fire after Mac made that shot last night.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, I know I was up until about 1 a.m.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: trying to keep up with the tweets and keep up with you know all the redded post-game threads and all this kind of stuff, just seeing because it, you know, you just get addicted to it.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Once it once it goes in, you get you I couldn't go to sleep last night because I was so hyped up, man.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Same, I was so happy.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I was just pacing around my townhome.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Like I could not sit down, I wasn't watching anything on the TV, I was just sitting there watching the Mac shot a gajillion times.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: And then dipping into like the salty UT fan tweets, and it's just like, oh, this tastes so good.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: What a nice nightcap.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh finally we get that big win that we desperately needed.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, after losing to Houston, Kansas, and okay state, it's like, okay, we gotta get something here for the resume.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: And this was a huge resume booster.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have a chance to do it again, and we're gonna talk about Baylor here in a second, but we also did play Iowa State, by the way.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: And uh, we also killed Iowa State by 27.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: I um the my biggest disappointment is we didn't beat them as badly in Ames as last year.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Come on, Chris.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I mean we're done.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: We really want to look at an extension for this right now.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: So wow, I mean, uh and just sort of domination and against a conference opponent.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I I don't think we've ever looked that dominant this whole season, even against some of the lesser opponents.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: And whenever you're playing Iowa State, um, a classically solid Big 12 basketball team, and you just do that to them, yeah.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, it feels so good, especially after what they've been doing to us in football.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I'm glad to get these revenge games.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: So we got them coordinated.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: These are the these are the games, these are the games that actually matter.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: State fans.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Basketball season is here.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Basketball is the true college sport, everybody knows that.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: The only sport, oh, the only college sports that matter are the ones tech's good at.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: That's all I gotta say.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Baseball and basketball and whatever else we're good at.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Me judging, chess, whatever track.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Track.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: This is it.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: That's all that matters.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Football doesn't matter.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: So basically, everything but football.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: This is a bunch of crap.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: But football, get it together.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: I know we say that every podcast, but uh, why don't we get into a little Baylor preview here?
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: We have the number two team in the nation come into town to play our Red Raiders in a huge game this Saturday, 3 p.m.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: at United Supermarkets Arena.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: Baylor, of course, is undefeated.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: They have not, of all the games they've won, they haven't won by less than 10 points.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, they are out here kicking ass and taking names, but you know, you gotta look at that schedule when you first see Baylor.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: They haven't played many good opponents.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: They played Illinois, who is number 14 in the nation right now, and they beat him pretty handedly.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: That's a good team.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: But other than that, they haven't played much.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, their competition that that they've been going up against has not been very good.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Well, it sounds like that that that's a great sign for us then to talk about an opportunity to come out and punch them in the mouth.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: That's ambush territory.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: They're about to come into uh the the USA, which has become a tough place to play, uh, especially with the fans.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: And they're gonna be playing a Texas Tech team that's trending in the right direction.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: So it's this team has really taken taken a turn here in the season, and it's it's just great to see because it's it's time to turn it on, and they have.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Looks like our boys are responding.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: So I hope they keep that uh underdog mentality and come out and just tackle the the Baylor Bears, take down another rival two in a row.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: We're at our best when we're in that underdog state of mind and are, you know, like I'm I'm happier almost when we're unranked, because it seems like that's when we really pick it up and want to show the world who what we're made of.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: And you know, Chris Beard always gets up for every game, and he's really gonna get up for this Baylor game, just like he got the got the guys up for the UT game.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: So I'm not worried about that aspect of it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: What I am worried about, and well, not me personally, but what Baylor should be worried about is that they haven't played a team like this at their house yet.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Even the Illinois game was a neutral site game, like they haven't played anybody at their place that was really a good team.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see how Baylor responds to it.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: I think our dudes are gonna bring it, man.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: And uh even though Baylor is a very good team for sure.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: So I I guess we need to talk about the uh the us versus Baylor in the uh player aspect.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: So obviously, phenomenal team.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: What do you think is the opportunity we have to put it over Baylor?
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Like, what do we have that they're gonna struggle with?
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Baylor lets teams stick around, and they've done it with a few games this year, teams that they clearly are better than, but they just let them keep sticking around.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: And uh sometimes we're really good about staying in it.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: We did it, we did a great job of that the UT game.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: So, but we need to start off strong against this team.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: We need to come out with the same energy that UT came out with in our game.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, UT started off that game very energized.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, talking crap, taking names, making big shots right off the bat.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: We need to do that against Baylor.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: We need to punch him in the mouth early.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: And we haven't been doing that this season, but if if this is the time to do it, it's right now against the number two team in the nation.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: But talk to sorry, no, you go ahead.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: You go ahead.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: No, no, I was just gonna just bounce off of what you're saying.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: You know, talk about an energy shift in the UT game when uh UT was out you know on fire in the first half, then we come out of this locker room with the fire, you know, we just threw it right back at them.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: We're the one with the energy.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: So I was just gonna say I want that, I want that team coming out of the locker room for the first half.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: So keep on with your thoughts, dude.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Now, second half, Texas Tech, man, that's that's a tough team to beat.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: So we need to bring that for the we need to bring that for the whole game.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: But talking about tailor players specifically, I mean, we're talking a bunch of returners for this Baylor team.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: It seems like guys that have been on there every time I watch a new Baylor game, it's like, dang it, this guy again is still on the team.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: But uh obviously they have their two star guards, two NBA caliber guys, Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell, both of which are gonna have careers in the NBA.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: You know, they're they're just super talented dudes, great shooters, they know how to get to the rim, do all the things that matter.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: And then they have a plethora of role players, guys like Messio Teague, guys like Flo Thomba, not Mo Bamba, Flo Thomba.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Of course, he's been on Baylor for a hot minute now.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: Him, Adam Flagler, Matthew Mayer, these type of guys.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, Mark Vital, the biggest of the role players.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's the guy that does everything for you.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: He's a rebounder, he's a tough guy underneath.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: He's been in on he's been on Baylor's team for about 12 years now.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: And I mean, they just have a lot of good role players on this team.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: And tough.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: I'm picking up a theme from your tangent there.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: It sounds like we're going up against a very tenured veteran team.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Yes, very tenured, one of the most tenured in all the all the nation, really.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Not just the Big 12, but all the nation.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: And it's proven.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, Scott Drew's a great coach, he's always been a great coach, but to have guys constantly returning for you.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, you just build up on that team chemistry and on that, you know, guys that have played with each other now for three, four years.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: And so when you have that mix of guys, I mean, it comes together beautifully, and and they you've seen it from Baylor this year, man.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's irreplaceable.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: You know, the the the team, the the veterancy and the team chemistry is just it's something that you can't put on a chalkboard.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: So uh speaking of so, um, talk about the way our team has mixed back together since Burnett left.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: Uh well, since Burnett left, we've had to had more minutes kind of go in Jamarius Burton's way.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: We haven't really seen guys like Clarence and Adolmy get in the lineup, we haven't seen Avery Benson much, we haven't seen Chabuzo Agbo.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: It's kind of just been more minutes for Mac and more minutes for Jamarius, kind of at that guard spot, and then Kyler, obviously.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: But um, we're replacing his minutes well, and I was I was anxious to see how we.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: We're gonna do that, especially.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, Namari by the at the time that he left was like fifth in the Big 12 in Steals.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: So, you know, playing that defense, and and you could see it fall apart a few times against UT.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: UT's very good team, and so is Baylor.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're gonna score points.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: We have a solid defense, but uh we're just we just have to find a way to replace those defensive minutes.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: We found a way on offense.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, Mac has been going absolutely nuts these last few games.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: So um another guy I wanted to mention for Baylor's team, uh, and forgive me for this last name pronunciation, but Jonathan Chamwa Chachua, I think is how you say it.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: He's a transfer.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I nailed it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: He's a guy from UNLV transfer, had to sit out last season.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Big guy down low, loves to rebound, loves to block shots.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be another issue for Marcus that he has to deal with.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: But Marcus, of all people, is gonna accept that challenge.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Well, Chris Beard is UNLV head coach great, so maybe he kind of has the the intel on this man.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: So UNLV legend Chris Beard.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: But wow, it sounds like our boys have another test coming up.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: So I I hope that they keep their minds right.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: I want that UT mindset because those our boys were fired up.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: At the whenever we won that game, they went ballistic.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Like the like the the Mac re interview with Fran, that was hilarious.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: That was an awesome moment.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Something to remember.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: And I I just I want that team to come back home and uh play against the Baylor, uh Baylor Bears because uh it it it's it's at at moments in the season, it looks like they're they're it we've looked off, you know, like especially on offense.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Like maybe the chemistry isn't there and all that, because I know I know we've talked about that at nauseum.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: So I I love what we're seeing right now, but I just hope it keeps progressing in this direction it is, which is good.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: And I think it is.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, it as the season progresses, you want your team to come together more instead of less, obviously.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: But you know, this is back to the Namari point.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: You know, you get guys on the team that don't fully buy in, it doesn't work in the locker room.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: It doesn't, once you get your whole roster in and your whole roster ready for that one goal and not just thinking about themselves, that's when you have a good team.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: And that's what we saw with the Final Four team a few years ago.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: And that I think that's what we're trending towards with this team.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: So seeing seeing Mac, you know, leave the interview early because he's got to go celebrate with his teammates, seeing the fireside chat that Beard puts on, and then everybody's just acting happy.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just fun to see, and it's fun to cheer for.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: It's just a fun team to cheer for, you know.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: For sure, dude.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: And uh gosh, that that fireside chat was hilarious, man.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: That's that's one of my favorites.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Two hours left on the guitar Mac, and they're ordering Waffle House, that that raisin bread with apple butter, and uh, and and hearing Chris Beard get fired up when his boys say that they're talking about their favorite country songs.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: That's he's just the most likable coach there is, and I I love what he's building uh with this team.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: It looks like it's it's really taking it taking a turn in the best way.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: There's no disliking that man, you can't.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: You can you can do whatever you can make fun of him going eight crap on the bench and just you know going insane, yelling, and you know, high five and doing all that stuff.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: But that's what you need in a coach.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: And Chris Beard's uh personality as much as he is a great head coach.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Personality is is 100 a description for Chris Beard, and like you're saying with with Burnett, man, it's this guy is not an every player's coach, he's he's unhe's unorthodox, he coaches hard, he expects a lot out of the team, and he expects them to play like a team.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And not every guy going to a college team out of high school who's highly touted is is gonna be thrilled about that, yeah.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: So it's just I'm not gonna speak for the young man, and I hope he goes and does the best what he for himself.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: But this you need the right guys in this Chris Beard system, and I think that applies more to Chris Beard than uh than than some other coaches, yeah, no doubt.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: And I mean that's not a knock on Burnett, you know, you do what you need to do to if you think you can succeed elsewhere, you do that.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: But once you get the right type of guys in your program, the right type of guys that play together, work together, it's it's hard to beat you.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: And so getting that type that's the ultimate goal, really, is to get talent on your team, but also togetherness.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, getting the getting the bad apples like they have on their jersey patch, getting those guys out of your life, and just everybody come together as one, that's how you get a really good team.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: And I think we're trending right in that direction.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: You have any other thoughts about the Baylor game that we were previewing here?
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: Just that they're a defensive-oriented team as much as we are, man.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: They they kind of play the same sort of defense that we do, uh, block out the middle, and uh, you know, they don't allow a lot of points.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: So uh we have to find ways to score, and and that second half against UT, we bring that same energy, we get to the line, uh, you know, we get some of their guys in foul trouble.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: It's it's just what we need to do to win this game.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: And they're a huge target for our dreams of a Big 12 trophy.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: So we gotta we gotta snipe another one down like we did with UT.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: So we we gotta keep winning these games because that dream is still alive.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: And if oh, very much beating Baylor will be a huge statement going forward for it, not to mention seeding, of course.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: So uh love the way this is going.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: So I we have another game to to to talk about as well, sir.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: We do TCU coming up on Wednesday.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm not sure if they have a time set yet, but it's gonna be at TCU.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: Uh TCU, one of the bottom feeders of the Big 12, they have not looked very good.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: They have a very young team this year, uh, kind of Iowa State-esque, you know, just kind of need to go in and take care of business.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: But uh the thing I would stress, and I don't really have worries that they're gonna be like this, but a lot of teams after playing two really big games have to have take, you know, take a load off and take it easy for that next coming game.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, playing two top five teams back to back, you're preparing for them for you know weeks, and then all of a sudden those games are over, and then you're kind of like taking a back seat and you know taking it easy.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: You can't do that against any of these teams in the Big 12.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: And I don't think Chris Beard has that mentality at all.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: I don't think these players have that mentality, but that's what we need to avoid.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: And we can't go into any game really lightly because the Big 12 is a gauntlet, man.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I think that's the biggest point with playing a team like TCU is don't let it become a trap game, you know, because any of the games in the Big 12 can turn into that.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: So just just look at Oklahoma State, a team we should have beaten, but and we we came out as the lesser team that game.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: So we gotta we gotta come out and treat everybody like they're Kansas.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't care, you know.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: So it's uh I'm sure they don't care either.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: It's just you gotta get out there and just win.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: So uh I I agree, man.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, it is another Iowa State situation.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd be very okay with re reviewing a game where we won by 30 again, especially against a rival in Fort Worth there.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: So that's we need some more bragging rides.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: As exciting as a mag game winner is, it's not so good for my heart.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: But if we if we go and win by 30, I'm I'm much more at peace.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: But uh, I think that's gonna be a moment.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: I don't think you and I spent enough time on that.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: I think that's gonna be a moment that goes down in the uh the the hall of fame of Texas Tech Memories, is that basically near, damn near buzzer beater of a shot to uh um top off that ut game, man.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's only there's a few games that I go back at least once a year and go re-watch or go, you know, just watch the highlights of.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: And he's up there now with Michael Crabtree, and he's up there now with Keaton Evans as as tech greats that have hit big shots against UT, our biggest rival, and have won games for us again as as the little brother program.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Really, it's nice to get these type of things, and it really means something and goes down in in history.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: And so uh hitting a shot like that and and having you know the just the dog mentality that Mac had all game, you just love to see it, and you can't you can't hate on him in any way.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: It means so much to the alumni.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: That was such a great tweet, man.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, that's my favorite tweet from your from the from the pod account was the Michael Crabtree Mac McClung tweet.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, I agree, man.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: It means so much to uh to to uh uh tech alum and West Texans to uh to grab that.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: So man, just a memory that we'll never forget.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: And to that, and to I mean, to that point with that tweet, people were were responding.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: Other players, other tech players that have made huge plays against UT.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: It was like I put Michael Crabtree, Mac McClung.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: I wasn't I would have put Keenan Evans if I was uh I just wasn't I was so freaking excited.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: I was like, this has these two need to be linked together right now, and then uh uh you know people are responding.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Uh Keenan Evans, Jakeem Grant, Cameron Batson, you know, all these type of dudes that have made huge plays against the against the Longhorns.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: And uh man, it was just a great moment.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, and just another player to go down in history for us, uh against those darn horns.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Let's keep it rolling though.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Let's make some history next year and let's let's get let's uh let's get them again when they come to Lubbock.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: Let's I mean uh we we play them again this year, so yeah, up the beauty of the big 12.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Up in Lubbock.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: So come on down, UT.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Let's go again.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: But uh we got Baylor, we got Baylor first, so let's focus on them because they're only 50.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: And then TCU.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Don't overlook TCU.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Take it game by game, man.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: And I I know Chris Beard will have his guys not not really relaxing at any point of this season.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: So that's how you win, man.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: That's how you win.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Speaking of uh the podcast Twitter, we are this close.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: We are we're one follower away from 100 followers, and we want to get to a billion, but right now our main goal is to get that one extra one.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: So tell your friends about us, tell your family, tell your grandma, tell everybody to go listen to Talking Tech Pod and to go on Twitter and to go follow us because we need one more for a hundred, man.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah, man.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: It just uh we we we value you, treasured listeners.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: We're just we're just having fun with this.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: It's just and we want y'all to be in it with us.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: So just two dudes talking tech.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: That'll that was the goal.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: That's the goal, man.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: I'm drinking a beer right now, so that's that's that says it all.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: We're just having a good time.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: So we we do appreciate all y'all that have given us support so far, and uh hopefully we can keep this thing rolling more often because this is just fun, it's just fun to do this every week.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: This is this is my favorite day of the week, so yeah, no doubt.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Talk about everybody.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: So um uh Tristan, I think we can end it there with with sports.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: I think um, you know, a big game ahead for Baylor, big game for TCU.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, I and and really back to this because I was thinking with this UT Baylor combo right here, I was lucky if we got one.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: I was like, I would have been happy if we just got one and we have a chance to get two.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is really a big point in the season for us to to really make a leak.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Like like we were saying earlier, the the the the the dream of grabbing another Big 12 trophy is still there, and I think winning these games makes a huge statement.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: So if we win if we want those big dreams of adding to the trophy collection, gaining that respect, and uh looking forward to a great starting point in March, we gotta keep building on this because we're doing great here.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: I love the way we've responded since Oklahoma State.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: That's that's what I gotta say.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: We've uh had some adversity through the season and we are handling like pros.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: So go beat the Bears, man.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: Huge guns up, baby.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Huge guns up.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: But why don't we end it right here with your song of the week, Tristan?
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: All right, so we just had a great game.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna top off the episode with a great song from a legendary Texas red dirt band.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, they're actually out of Oklahoma, so I don't know if it's cool to call them a Texas band, but uh Cross Canadian Ragweed 17.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Much like my song last week, it's about returning to your hometown and just realizing you know there's a lot in yourself that hasn't really changed, and that your hometown has you know still has some similarities into what you remember.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: And it's just one of those songs that anybody can relate to.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: I think it's one of the most relatable songs of all time, and it's just a jam.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: 17 Cross Canadian Ragweed, a very legendary song, very legendary band.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: Go give it a listen.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: You keep all running boy, you run yourself in the ground.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: You're always lever taking your hometown.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, that's the truth, man.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: Every time you go back to your hometown or you meet with old friends from high school or whatever, you just kind of revert back to that point in your life, you know, and you just remember all the good times and and your personality, you know, you grow up as a person, but you uh you kind of revert back to that those high school days and and high school you when you're uh when you're in your hometown and with your old friends.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: So um, but also it seems like 17, that's uh that's the key number in country music, man.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: It seems like every song somebody's talking about is when they were 17.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: I kind of get it though.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: It's like the last year you're truly a teenager.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: So it kind of hits a point that everybody can relate to.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: So I I love that song.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: It's one of my favorite songs of all time, and I think it's one of the most influential and best red dirt songs ever in the jam.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: So uh 17 Cross Canadian Ragweed.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, man.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: So uh my song of the week, I'm gonna do uh an artist that's very similar to uh Cross Canadian Ragweed.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, it is uh Travis Scott.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, I say they bounce off each other like quite a bit, you know.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: I hear they're I hear they're you know teaming up for for a tour here in the future.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, even though ragweed's not even together anymore.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Oh well, that's too bad.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: They were they were gonna make a great combo.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: No, but my song of the week is Travis Scott, it's stargazing, it's a jam.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: I was hyped up after that UT win.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: I was you know going insane, and Travis Scott is a great guy that goes insane, and and it's just good jam music, man.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: It's good party music, it'll get you pumped up.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: And uh really I'm choosing Travis Scott partly because Houston, Houston's falling apart right now.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, the the city of Houston is not having a great time.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: James Harden just uh got traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Deshaun Watson once out.
