- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Chris Hansen right now on Crime March Daily.
- 0:02Speaker 2: From here in New York, a seemingly ordinary suburban home
- 0:14Speaker 2: becomes a house of horror. It was just so sickening,
- 0:19Speaker 2: a chilling triple homicide.
- 0:23Speaker 3: There was blood all over the walls.
- 0:25Speaker 4: There was a.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Little panprint as if a little boy was being kind
- 0:30Speaker 3: of dragged along.
- 0:31Speaker 1: An angelic five year old boy sleeping over and his grandparents.
- 0:37Speaker 5: He always wanted to hang out with Grandma.
- 0:40Speaker 1: All three are savagely murdered. The evidence grotesque.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Adult diapers, the two long blonde women's wigs, prosthetic breasts.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Who would commit such an evil cron as our Ana
- 0:52Speaker 1: Garcia uncovers, it's a madman.
- 0:54Speaker 4: With an unbelievable motive.
- 0:56Speaker 6: This is a very tangled relationship he.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Had let simmer for years.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Then an All American high school football star goes off
- 1:04Speaker 1: to his freshman year in college and comes home with
- 1:07Speaker 1: a different person.
- 1:08Speaker 7: It was very weird because he's never been like that
- 1:11Speaker 7: around you.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And then he vanishes into thin air.
- 1:15Speaker 8: It all starts here with three bizarre nine one one calls.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Did Logan Shittelman run away? Or is this Paul play?

- 1:47Speaker 13: So.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Welcome to Crime Watch Daily. I'm Chris Hansen. You're watching
- 1:52Speaker 1: night vision video shot from a helicopter as cops track
- 1:56Speaker 1: down a very dangerous suspect hiding in the thick brush.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And how did we get to this point? Our Ana
- 2:02Speaker 1: Garcia rewinds.
- 2:04Speaker 6: To the start inside this quaint house, nestled on a
- 2:08Speaker 6: quiet street, a scene so grisly.
- 2:13Speaker 3: It was just so sickening, so gruesome.
- 2:20Speaker 6: It defies comprehension.
- 2:23Speaker 3: No one will believe this could happen, and yet it did.
- 2:27Speaker 6: A murder case that gripped nation.
- 2:30Speaker 3: The entire country has reacted with.
- 2:32Speaker 6: Horror headlines around the world. How would you describe this crime?
- 2:38Speaker 3: Very sad, kind of makes you lose your faith in
- 2:41Speaker 3: the good of humanity.
- 2:47Speaker 6: Jennifer O'Brien, a busy mom with three young boys, went
- 2:51Speaker 6: to pick up her five year old son Nathan from
- 2:53Speaker 6: his grandparents' house.
- 2:55Speaker 5: He always wanted to hang out with Grandma or sleep
- 2:57Speaker 5: over at grandma's house, and they had a lot of
- 3:01Speaker 5: fun together.
- 3:03Speaker 6: But when Jennifer arrives, she stumbles upon an odd scene.
- 3:09Speaker 6: The front door is already open. As she walks in,
- 3:13Speaker 6: she's hit first with the smell of death, and then
- 3:19Speaker 6: pools of blood everywhere and no sign of her parents
- 3:25Speaker 6: or son.
- 3:27Speaker 3: There was blood all over the beds, on the walls,
- 3:30Speaker 3: on the floor, there were bloody footprints. In the hallway,
- 3:35Speaker 3: there was drag marks.
- 3:37Speaker 6: And the most heartbreaking sight imprinted on a wall.
- 3:44Speaker 3: There was a little handprint on the way out, as
- 3:47Speaker 3: if a little boy was being kind of dragged along
- 3:51Speaker 3: and had put his hand against the wall to brace himself.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Bill Graveland of the Canadian Press says, a hysterical Jennifer
- 4:04Speaker 6: calls the cops, telling them, I think my family has
- 4:08Speaker 6: been killed.
- 4:10Speaker 14: She must have been terrified.
- 4:11Speaker 3: They told her to stay in her car with the
- 4:14Speaker 3: door lock because they were afraid that there potentially might
- 4:16Speaker 3: be someone still in the house.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Cops burst into the gruesome scene and feverishly searched the house,
- 4:25Speaker 6: but no bodies are found. The grandparents and little Nathan
- 4:29Speaker 6: are missing.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I think police were hoping that they were had been
- 4:34Speaker 3: kidnapped and were being held somewhere.
- 4:36Speaker 6: At the scene. There is not one shred of DNA found,
- 4:40Speaker 6: not one fingerprint from a potential killer. Cops immediately issue
- 4:44Speaker 6: an amber alert in hopes of locating the family.
- 4:49Speaker 10: I know, Grandma's holding you so tightly right now and
- 4:52Speaker 10: taking care of you, and they are doing everything in
- 4:54Speaker 10: their power to keep you safe.
- 4:56Speaker 6: What a police first think?
- 4:58Speaker 3: A lot of people thought some out of a custody
- 5:00Speaker 3: deal and perhaps the grandparents had grabbed the little guy
- 5:04Speaker 3: and taken off.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Hundreds of police searched relentlessly, but with no sign of
- 5:09Speaker 6: Nathan and his grandparents. They eventually circled back to the
- 5:13Speaker 6: scene of the massacre, holding on to any sliver of
- 5:17Speaker 6: hope to locate the five year old alive.
- 5:21Speaker 3: They'd hope that maybe he saw the violence and had
- 5:23Speaker 3: hidden somewhere, so they went through all the closets, under
- 5:27Speaker 3: the beds, anywhere that anyone could hide.
- 5:30Speaker 4: He wasn't there.
- 5:32Speaker 6: Nathan O'Brien, an adorable, blonde, mop topped boy, the spirited
- 5:37Speaker 6: middle child of three brothers in the close knit O'Brien clan.
- 5:42Speaker 15: This isn't like Fairytale Paradise, yea.
- 5:46Speaker 13: Every fairy tale.
- 5:47Speaker 6: As he loved superheroes, Nathan you made friends wherever he went.
- 5:55Speaker 5: He'd go and knock another kid's doors. We didn't know
- 5:58Speaker 5: the parents and get the kid. It's all coming out
- 6:00Speaker 5: to play. Even though he didn't know them, and all
- 6:03Speaker 5: of them turned out to be his best.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Friend and was the apple of his grandparents' eyes.
- 6:08Speaker 11: My mom would show up at the door, Nathan would run,
- 6:11Speaker 11: literally run to her and hug her and love her,
- 6:16Speaker 11: and they were just so bonded.
- 6:20Speaker 6: The grandparents, Alvin and Kathy Licknis, were the glue that
- 6:25Speaker 6: held the family together.
- 6:27Speaker 11: My mom was my best friend, and she was just
- 6:30Speaker 11: a very caring, loving mother who made a home for
- 6:34Speaker 11: all of us. My dad was an entrepreneur who was
- 6:37Speaker 11: always trying to start up business and be successful, and he.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Was Alvin and Kathy were about to start a new
- 6:46Speaker 6: chapter in their lives retirement. On the day they disappeared,
- 6:50Speaker 6: they were having an estate sale, downsizing after buying a
- 6:54Speaker 6: new home in Edmonton.
- 6:55Speaker 3: They were planning on movie the next week. I mean
- 6:57Speaker 3: they were getting rid of all their extra belongings. They
- 7:00Speaker 3: were going to spread their winters down in Mosetland.
- 7:02Speaker 6: They bought a conto down there, but the vision of
- 7:05Speaker 6: the couple enjoying their golden years basking in the warm
- 7:08Speaker 6: Mexican sun quickly turned cold and dark.
- 7:13Speaker 3: The police went on for a couple of weeks where
- 7:15Speaker 3: they were still hoping that they might find them held
- 7:19Speaker 3: somewhere and that perhaps the injuries they had sustained in
- 7:22Speaker 3: the home weren't fatal.
- 7:24Speaker 6: But as the days ticked by, that hope dwindled.
- 7:28Speaker 3: They searched for a couple of weeks looking for them
- 7:31Speaker 3: and never found any.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Bodies, and it became very obvious this was no abduction,
- 7:40Speaker 6: more like a triple murder with a violent killer still
- 7:45Speaker 6: on the loose.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Police had a number of news conferences finally told us
- 7:52Speaker 3: that a violent assault had happened in the home.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Up next, cops go on the hunt soon discovered chilling
- 8:01Speaker 6: clues at a rural farm.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Pictures of men and women the restrained, perhaps killed, wearing
- 8:08Speaker 3: adult diapers.
- 8:09Speaker 6: Macabb detail straight out of a horror movie. Will the
- 8:13Speaker 6: scary stash lead cops to the bodies of Nathan and
- 8:17Speaker 6: his grandparents.
- 8:21Speaker 1: A woman heads over to her parents' house to pick
- 8:23Speaker 1: up her five year old son. However, when she arrives,
- 8:27Speaker 1: they're all gone, and when she walks around inside the house,
- 8:30Speaker 1: she makes a frightening discovery. Blood is everywhere. Anna Garcia
- 8:35Speaker 1: is back now with more stand up.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Nathan O'Brien, a beautiful five year old boy with the
- 8:44Speaker 6: face of an angel, seen here on home video celebrating
- 8:52Speaker 6: his birthday in his favorite superhero costume, Nathan, how do
- 8:57Speaker 6: you Day?
- 8:59Speaker 5: But his fifth.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Birthday be his last. Nathan has gone missing, and so
- 9:05Speaker 6: have his grandparents. The trio disappeared after Nathan had a
- 9:09Speaker 6: sleepover at their house.
- 9:12Speaker 15: All that was left.
- 9:15Speaker 6: A home awash in blood and too many questions.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I think police were hoping that they had been kidnapped
- 9:22Speaker 3: and were being held somewhere.
- 9:24Speaker 10: Nathan, I need you to hear my voice right now,
- 9:26Speaker 10: and I need you to know that Mommy and Daddy
- 9:28Speaker 10: love you more than anything in this world. We know
- 9:31Speaker 10: you are a superhero, and I just need you to
- 9:33Speaker 10: stay strong and you're going to see you.
- 9:36Speaker 6: An amber alert doesn't yield results, but within days, over
- 9:40Speaker 6: thirteen hundred tips pour in, so many that it crashed
- 9:45Speaker 6: the police department's computer system. Cops analyze hundreds of hours
- 9:50Speaker 6: of surveillance tape than something suspicious catches their eye.
- 9:55Speaker 3: They went to all these homes in the neighborhood and
- 9:58Speaker 3: they found this green like mid seventies Ford f one
- 10:04Speaker 3: fifty truck, very distinctive looking.
- 10:08Speaker 6: Police release a flyer with a picture of the green
- 10:11Speaker 6: pickup spotted on the grandparents street the night they disappeared,
- 10:16Speaker 6: and it wasn't long before cops get a call from
- 10:18Speaker 6: a woman who said she recognized the truck. It belonged
- 10:23Speaker 6: to her brother, so the sister turned him in.
- 10:26Speaker 4: She did.
- 10:27Speaker 6: The owner of that truck is a man named Doug
- 10:30Speaker 6: Garland and police now want to talk to him. They
- 10:34Speaker 6: nab him at a traffic stop and hold him in
- 10:37Speaker 6: jail on a previous false identity charge.
- 10:40Speaker 3: He was always very quiet and didn't reveal anything to
- 10:44Speaker 3: the police.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Meanwhile, Canadian Mounties stormed the forty acre farm where Garland
- 10:50Speaker 6: lives with his elderly parents on an emergency hostage rescue,
- 10:56Speaker 6: but no one was found, either alive or dead, but
- 11:00Speaker 6: there was something. One of the first things they noticed
- 11:05Speaker 6: a burn barrel smoldering near the greenhouse. Inside the tank,
- 11:10Speaker 6: nothing but ash.
- 11:11Speaker 3: There's no blood, there's no sign of any evidence.
- 11:15Speaker 6: Back at police headquarters, Garland is released on bail and
- 11:18Speaker 6: given strict instructions not to go back to the farm.
- 11:23Speaker 6: In the meantime, cops secure a warrant and scour every
- 11:27Speaker 6: inch of the sprawling property. What they find is bone chilling.
- 11:33Speaker 6: Hidden away in basement rafters, police find a computer hard drive,
- 11:38Speaker 6: and that's.
- 11:39Speaker 3: When all the house of horror stuff starts coming out.
- 11:41Speaker 6: On that hard drive reams of painstaking research on gruesome
- 11:46Speaker 6: and violent topics.
- 11:48Speaker 3: He downloaded a bunch of things, things like attack your
- 11:53Speaker 3: victims at like three and o'clock in the morning, that
- 11:55Speaker 3: the element of surprise, painful ways to torture.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Cops say. The hard drive was also littered with images
- 12:03Speaker 6: of his alleged sexual obsessions.
- 12:07Speaker 14: What's the fetish part, Well, he had quite a fetish
- 12:10Speaker 14: about adult diapers, and there were a number of pictures
- 12:13Speaker 14: of men and women being restrained, perhaps killed, wearing adult diapers.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Every inch of the place was searched, including the basement
- 12:23Speaker 6: office with a library of the macabre. Garland also had
- 12:27Speaker 6: some books anything there.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yes, one was a book on how to poison people.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Another one was called The Joy of killing.
- 12:36Speaker 6: And also in the basement a cross dresser's fantasy, the.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Set of prosthetic breasts, the two long blonde women's wigs
- 12:44Speaker 3: that were on these mannequin heads.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Racks of women's clothing in Garland's size, and a vast
- 12:51Speaker 6: collection of shoes. He had how many pairs of shoes
- 12:54Speaker 6: eighty nine pairs men and women, And in his eyes,
- 12:59Speaker 6: and curiously in the closet, an empty shoe box, but
- 13:04Speaker 6: missing from that box a pair of size thirteen doctor
- 13:08Speaker 6: shol Tennis shoes. Then cops seized boxes filled with weapons, handcuffs,
- 13:14Speaker 6: some in a child's size, hack saw blades, leather straps,
- 13:20Speaker 6: bone saws, knives, guns, and a straight jacket. But what
- 13:25Speaker 6: investigators don't find bodies?
- 13:29Speaker 3: I mean the police went on their hands and knees,
- 13:32Speaker 3: elbow to elbow, going through the grass, through that entire acreature.
- 13:37Speaker 6: But of all the disturbing clues, one stood out, the
- 13:41Speaker 6: smoldering burn barrel. Cops had noticed it during the first
- 13:46Speaker 6: search of the farm. This time investigators take a closer look.
- 13:50Speaker 3: They went through everything, sifting sifteen sifting, sifting kind of
- 13:54Speaker 3: like gold mining, almost where they go layer by layer
- 13:57Speaker 3: by layer.
- 13:57Speaker 6: Panning yeah, and through the ashes they find a baby tooth.
- 14:03Speaker 3: They found the burnt flesh and a lot of the
- 14:05Speaker 3: bone fragments in the embers of the burning barrel.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Was Doug Garland a sadistic killer? And why would he
- 14:13Speaker 6: want to murder a precious child and his grandparents.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Because of their past history.
- 14:21Speaker 6: Not long after collecting evidence, cop soon learned that Garland
- 14:26Speaker 6: is no stranger to Alvin and Kathy Licknus. They actually
- 14:30Speaker 6: had a layered and complex relationship that went back years.
- 14:35Speaker 6: So this is a very tangled relationship.
- 14:39Speaker 3: It was just a very strange set of circumstances on
- 14:42Speaker 3: how they actually all became acquainted.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Garland's sister, Patty, the one who reported the truck, is
- 14:49Speaker 6: married to Licknus, his son. But the detail that sparked
- 14:53Speaker 6: Copp's interest, Alvin, a successful entrepreneur, employed Garland years before.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Patty's husband had suggested that when Alvin Lickness was looking
- 15:06Speaker 3: for someone to work with that Doug would be possibly
- 15:10Speaker 3: a good choice because you know, he had some education,
- 15:12Speaker 3: and he was fairly handy, and he wasn't doing anything.
- 15:16Speaker 6: The two men worked on a pump invention together, but
- 15:19Speaker 6: the project never went anywhere. And Licknus eventually fired Garland.
- 15:25Speaker 3: They had worked together on building a pump for the
- 15:27Speaker 3: oil and gas sector, but the brains was Alvin Lickness
- 15:31Speaker 3: and it was his invention. It never made a penny,
- 15:34Speaker 3: it never got used, but apparently Doug Garland was angry
- 15:39Speaker 3: and bitter over it for years.
- 15:42Speaker 6: Bitter enough for murder. While mountains of incriminating evidence are
- 15:47Speaker 6: tiling up and more intel on Garland's history with the couple,
- 15:52Speaker 6: cops are keeping a close eye on the fifty seven
- 15:56Speaker 6: year old, following his every move. Here he is hold
- 16:00Speaker 6: on surveillance camera at an autoparts store buying what looks
- 16:04Speaker 6: like circular saw blades. Police are especially interested in what
- 16:08Speaker 6: he's wearing. Look closely on his feet. The same Doctor
- 16:13Speaker 6: Scholes missing from the shoe box. Do they match blood
- 16:18Speaker 6: soaked prints found the grandparents' home.
- 16:22Speaker 3: They actually have a shoe database federally in Canada. They
- 16:27Speaker 3: matched it to a doctor Schules running shoe and they
- 16:31Speaker 3: were able to trace it to a certain style.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Next up, police make their move.
- 16:37Speaker 3: The police were looking for him, but.
- 16:39Speaker 6: Doug Garland gives cops the slip. A mysterious triple murder
- 16:47Speaker 6: of an angelic five year old boy and his grandparents.
- 16:50Speaker 6: Leads cops to a rural farm where sickening clues point
- 16:55Speaker 6: in the direction of a depraved madman. He sounds like
- 16:59Speaker 6: the guy in the basement who's still living with his parents,
- 17:02Speaker 6: you know, and.
- 17:03Speaker 3: They always say highly intelligent, which he obviously was a loaner,
- 17:07Speaker 3: no friends.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Even though no bodies are ever found. With fourteen hundred
- 17:13Speaker 6: pieces of the most grotesque evidence imaginable, cops have enough
- 17:17Speaker 6: to make their move. But so did the alleged killer.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Did Doug go on the run? Was he a fugitive
- 17:24Speaker 6: at any time?
- 17:25Speaker 3: He was?
- 17:27Speaker 6: Investigators had Doug Garland under surveillance after their first search
- 17:31Speaker 6: of his property. Then, two weeks after Nathan and his
- 17:35Speaker 6: grandparents disappear, cops catch Garland trying to sneak back on
- 17:40Speaker 6: the farm where he lived.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Belief was he was trying to get rid of maybe
- 17:44Speaker 3: a little more evidence.
- 17:46Speaker 6: The sadist didn't get far, as you can see on
- 17:50Speaker 6: this police infrared camera.
- 17:52Speaker 3: They cornered him because the helicopter could see him, and
- 17:55Speaker 3: he finally surrendered. They told him, you know, don't make
- 17:58Speaker 3: ys evening any worse than it already, and he came
- 18:00Speaker 3: out and laid down on the grass and they handcuffed him.
- 18:05Speaker 6: The man who police believed brutally murdered Kathy and Alvin
- 18:09Speaker 6: Lickness and their beloved grandson, Nathan, finally gets what's coming
- 18:14Speaker 6: to him.
- 18:14Speaker 3: There's so much evidence here that a movie of the
- 18:17Speaker 3: week would not buy it.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Despite that, Garland pleaded not guilty to three murder charges,
- 18:24Speaker 6: the sensational five week long trial transfixed a spellbound nation.
- 18:29Speaker 6: The community was just gripped by this.
- 18:31Speaker 3: The public was watching this like I've never seen them
- 18:35Speaker 3: watch another criminal trial right across the country.
- 18:39Speaker 6: In opening statements, prosecutors told the three women, nine man
- 18:43Speaker 6: jury that Garland held a year's long grudge against Alvin
- 18:47Speaker 6: Lickness over a patent for a pump.
- 18:50Speaker 3: He had let simmer for years, and then, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 3: years later, he finally acted on it.
- 18:56Speaker 6: On the day they disappeared, Alvin and Kathy were having
- 19:00Speaker 6: an estate sale since they were planning to move and
- 19:03Speaker 6: wanted to downsize. So Garland put his sordid plan into action.
- 19:09Speaker 6: So if he was going to get them, he had
- 19:10Speaker 6: to get them soon did They left exactly the first
- 19:14Speaker 6: step breaking into the couple's home.
- 19:16Speaker 3: It appeared mister Garland had drilled a hole in one
- 19:19Speaker 3: of the locks.
- 19:21Speaker 6: The murderous timeline unfolded from there. Once in the house,
- 19:25Speaker 6: Garland preyed on his victims. According to his meticulous and
- 19:30Speaker 6: obsessive research, three am was the best time to attack.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Mister Garland went into Alvin Lickness's bedroom and bludgeoned him.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Then he went to the next room where Kathy Lickness
- 19:45Speaker 3: was sleeping with her grandson.
- 19:47Speaker 6: And was Nathan, the little five year old, just collateral
- 19:51Speaker 6: damage or do you think he was also a target?
- 19:55Speaker 3: I don't believe he was a target, but he decided
- 19:58Speaker 3: that he didn't want to leave anyone.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Forensic experts believe the family was alive when Garland dragged
- 20:05Speaker 6: them from the home and shoved them in the truck.
- 20:08Speaker 3: They got pictures of what appeared to be white sheet
- 20:12Speaker 3: going in the back of the truck, and police believe
- 20:14Speaker 3: that's where the bodies of the three were.
- 20:16Speaker 6: Shockingly, even with all the bloodshed, none of Garland's DNA
- 20:21Speaker 6: was ever detected at the house. How do you think
- 20:24Speaker 6: it's possible that Doug Garland was able to do so
- 20:28Speaker 6: much damage in that house yet not leave a shred
- 20:33Speaker 6: of DNA?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Well, He did a lot of research on how to
- 20:37Speaker 3: not leave DNA evidence. There were a number of these
- 20:40Speaker 3: white suits that the forensic people wear the and you
- 20:42Speaker 3: see them on TV shows. They believed that he was
- 20:45Speaker 3: wearing those.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Then Garland drove about twenty miles to his parents' rural farm,
- 20:51Speaker 6: where unspeakable horrors awaited. Nathan and his grandparents' DNA were
- 20:57Speaker 6: found on instruments of torture like meat hook's, bone, saws
- 21:02Speaker 6: and knives. Where was the meat hook found and what
- 21:05Speaker 6: evidence was on that?
- 21:07Speaker 3: They found Kathy Lickness's DNA on that, They found Alvin
- 21:11Speaker 3: Lickness and Nathan O'Brien's DNA on the meat saw, and
- 21:15Speaker 3: they found DNA from all three victims on the outside
- 21:19Speaker 3: of a pair of rubber boots.
- 21:21Speaker 6: But even with mountains of blood and fragment evidence, no
- 21:25Speaker 6: bodies were ever found.
- 21:27Speaker 4: There was nobody that.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Saw Doug Garland kill them, and they don't even have
- 21:31Speaker 3: a cause of death on these people.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Incredibly, Garland's elderly mother took the stand against her son,
- 21:39Speaker 6: testifying that she didn't hear him leave home the morning
- 21:42Speaker 6: the three disappeared.
- 21:44Speaker 3: She actually had found out they were missing, mentioned it
- 21:46Speaker 3: to him and he says, I don't want to talk
- 21:47Speaker 3: about that. Well, he already knew.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Perhaps One of the most disturbing images presented at trial
- 21:54Speaker 6: pictures captured completely by chance by a mapping plane which
- 21:59Speaker 6: flew over Garland's property the day after the family disappeared.
- 22:04Speaker 3: The fellow who took the photos. He can see what
- 22:07Speaker 3: appears to be two headless torsos of adults, looks like
- 22:11Speaker 3: they're laying face down wearing diapers, and as small figure
- 22:16Speaker 3: in the grass next to them, which is they believe
- 22:20Speaker 3: was Nathan O'Brien, right by the burning barrel.
- 22:24Speaker 6: But in this case the dead speak volumes.
- 22:28Speaker 3: There were no bodies, only tiny little.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Pieces, the only proof of their existence on the planet
- 22:36Speaker 6: buried in the ashes left behind in the burn barrel.
- 22:41Speaker 3: That where they found one small piece of flesh which
- 22:46Speaker 3: could have belonged to Alvin likeness. Bone fragments were from
- 22:49Speaker 3: a five year old boy. So he burned everybody apparently
- 22:53Speaker 3: chopped him up and it looks likened and then burned
- 22:56Speaker 3: the bodies just cremated him.
- 22:58Speaker 6: While the gruesome details of the heinous crimes unfold in court,
- 23:02Speaker 6: Doug Garland appeared unfazed.
- 23:05Speaker 3: He sat through the first round of hearings and the
- 23:09Speaker 3: second taking notes. We never heard a denial. We never
- 23:12Speaker 3: heard I'm sorry.
- 23:15Speaker 6: None of the victims' families took the stand, but Nathan's
- 23:18Speaker 6: dad's written words reverberated through the courtroom.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Rot O'Brien, when he did a victim impact statement, basically
- 23:27Speaker 3: said that I didn't even have enough of my son
- 23:30Speaker 3: to bury. There was not enough left of him.
- 23:34Speaker 6: After weeks of traumatizing testimony and about ten hours of deliberation,
- 23:40Speaker 6: Doug Garland is convicted of first degree murder and all
- 23:44Speaker 6: three deaths.
- 23:46Speaker 13: They've lost Kathy, they've lost Alvin, and it lost Nathan,
- 23:51Speaker 13: So this decision doesn't change that they still have to gree.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Words cannot describe the pain that Jennifer and Rod O'Brien endure.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Though they sat down with Crime Watch Daily, they declined
- 24:07Speaker 6: to speak about any details of the brutal murders.
- 24:10Speaker 11: Nathan spirit certainly lives on and lives on in this community.
- 24:17Speaker 6: They are coping day to day, raising their two boys
- 24:21Speaker 6: and by creating the Nathan O'Brien Children's Foundation, funded in
- 24:26Speaker 6: part by a one million dollar donation from an anonymous donor.
- 24:31Speaker 11: Nathan loves sports, so we have an annual decathlon where
- 24:35Speaker 11: we have children come out and learn how to play hockey.
- 24:39Speaker 6: You would have loved to be part of that.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Garland received three consecutive life terms for his heenous crimes.
- 24:47Speaker 6: For Jennifer O'Brien, that sentence won't bring her son and
- 24:51Speaker 6: parents back, but says she gets relief from an army
- 24:55Speaker 6: of people standing beside her.
- 24:58Speaker 11: Every time somebody says something with a warm, kind word
- 25:03Speaker 11: or kind kind heart, you know, and sometimes they feel
- 25:06Speaker 11: uncomfortable because they don't want to say to us because
- 25:08Speaker 11: they're scared they're going to get us upset. And I
- 25:11Speaker 11: just say thank you, thank you for saying that to us,
- 25:15Speaker 11: and thank you for praying for us, and thank you
- 25:17Speaker 11: for showing us that you care, because it means the
- 25:21Speaker 11: absolute world.
- 25:22Speaker 6: One of the things Nathan loved nighttime talks with his
- 25:26Speaker 6: dad at bedtime, and one conversation will forever linger. In
- 25:31Speaker 6: Rod's memory.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Nathan had started asking me at nighttime what heaven was like,
- 25:38Speaker 5: which is kind of a strange question coming from a
- 25:41Speaker 5: five year old, and say, well, you can fly around
- 25:45Speaker 5: and having like a superhero, because Nathan loved superheroes. There's
- 25:49Speaker 5: no night times you can play all the time. He goes, well,
- 25:53Speaker 5: I'm going to welcome you into heaven.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Dad.
- 25:55Speaker 5: You guys, we're.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Back now with more crime Watch Daily, and right now
- 26:05Speaker 1: we've got a mystery on the side of the freeway.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Did several eyewitnesses see a young man running from his
- 26:10Speaker 1: old life or did they stumble upon a crime scene.
- 26:14Speaker 1: For the details, let's head out west to our Jason material.
- 26:17Speaker 6: First of all, he's beautiful, beautiful.
- 26:22Speaker 8: Uh hi, I kill a watt smile and the magnetic personality.
- 26:27Speaker 8: Everyone liked him, but now no one can find him.
- 26:32Speaker 4: This case doesn't make much sense.
- 26:35Speaker 8: Logan Shindleman has vanished. Who benefits from Logan's disappearance? Was
- 26:44Speaker 8: he the victim of foul play or lost not wanting
- 26:48Speaker 8: to be found.
- 26:49Speaker 12: There was a lot of tension at home. He didn't
- 26:54Speaker 12: want to be there.
- 26:55Speaker 8: And we're asking the tough questions when I'm gonna ask.
- 26:59Speaker 9: This, But don't take it as my accusing you of anything.
- 27:05Speaker 8: Logan Shindelman's high school days in Tumwater, Washington were filled
- 27:09Speaker 8: with friends, fun and football.
- 27:12Speaker 5: He's a good athlete too, He's really good. He had
- 27:16Speaker 5: started defensive back in high school for two years. Actually
- 27:20Speaker 5: took it to stage twice.
- 27:22Speaker 8: His athletic ability, all American good looks, and easy going
- 27:26Speaker 8: attitude brought lots of friends.
- 27:28Speaker 5: I don't know have anyone that ever disliked him.
- 27:30Speaker 8: But according to his grandmother, who didn't initially return our
- 27:34Speaker 8: phone calls but did answer the door when we showed up,
- 27:37Speaker 8: if you didn't mind, love to have ask you some
- 27:39Speaker 8: questions about Logan, the good times Logan had in high
- 27:42Speaker 8: school didn't follow him after graduation.
- 27:46Speaker 15: He changed a lot.
- 27:47Speaker 16: He had a couple of things happened right after high
- 27:49Speaker 16: school that made him really aware of racism that he
- 27:55Speaker 16: hadn't really thought about as much, and he was really
- 27:59Speaker 16: had decided to his friends weren't really his friends anymore.
- 28:05Speaker 8: Ready for a fresh start, Logan Shindleman enrolled at Washington
- 28:08Speaker 8: State University, more than three hundred miles from home.
- 28:13Speaker 12: His first year at college I think turned out to
- 28:16Speaker 12: be very unpleasant for him, and I don't think he
- 28:19Speaker 12: had a whole lot of friends there.
- 28:21Speaker 8: And his close friends from high school he'd all but forgotten.
- 28:26Speaker 5: And I had contacted him a bunch of times after
- 28:28Speaker 5: we graduated message on Facebook.
- 28:31Speaker 6: Ned read him, but would never reply.
- 28:34Speaker 8: After his freshman year at college, and still ensure what
- 28:36Speaker 8: he wanted to do with his life. Logan returned to
- 28:39Speaker 8: Tumwater to live with his grandmother and have sister, but
- 28:43Speaker 8: friends say he wasn't the same happy, go lucky Logan.
- 28:47Speaker 7: And he came into my work and brought an application
- 28:50Speaker 7: in and I was just like, hey, like good to
- 28:53Speaker 7: see you, like how are you doing, And he didn't
- 28:56Speaker 7: say much. He didn't He kind of got like nervous
- 29:00Speaker 7: when I saw him. It was very weird.
- 29:03Speaker 8: For the next year, Logan kept busy working odd jobs
- 29:06Speaker 8: around town. Then one Thursday morning in May, his grandma
- 29:09Speaker 8: was getting ready for work when Logan said something she
- 29:12Speaker 8: thought was a bit bizarre.
- 29:15Speaker 16: He was really nervous, and he said he'd had an
- 29:17Speaker 16: epiphany and he was driving around and I said, well,
- 29:23Speaker 16: talk to me tonight when I got back from home.
- 29:27Speaker 8: But that talk and Logan's epiphany didn't transpire.
- 29:31Speaker 15: And of course I wish I could have said, sit down, let's.
- 29:34Speaker 8: Talk about Jinny Geebo would never see him again.
- 29:41Speaker 16: The next day, I pinged his phone and it pinged
- 29:44Speaker 16: near his mom's house, so I thought, well, he went
- 29:46Speaker 16: over there was visiting with her, and so that was okay.
- 29:50Speaker 8: It wasn't okay. Logan wasn't with his mother in nearby Olympia.
- 29:55Speaker 8: In fact, detectives believe he went in the opposite direction.
- 30:00Speaker 4: And we have activity on his phone going down towards
- 30:04Speaker 4: I five, heading south, and then the phone starts heading
- 30:07Speaker 4: back up north, and then it heads south again and it
- 30:11Speaker 4: stops where we recovered the vehicle on it.
- 30:14Speaker 8: When the nineteen year old henn't come home by Monday,
- 30:16Speaker 8: his grandma filed a missing person's report. Police ran the
- 30:19Speaker 8: plates on his car and discovered it had been impounded.
- 30:24Speaker 8: That it all starts here with three bizarre nine one
- 30:27Speaker 8: one calls a car is drifting across the lanes of
- 30:30Speaker 8: a busy highway in Olympia, Washington. However, the callers noticed
- 30:34Speaker 8: something strange. There's no one in the vehicle.
- 30:36Speaker 4: We find out the vehicle has been recovered already, and
- 30:39Speaker 4: then we get the story of some witnesses saying that
- 30:42Speaker 4: they saw a subject running out from the vehicle and
- 30:46Speaker 4: for it to be abandoned on the interstate and hitting
- 30:49Speaker 4: a Jersey barrier, that's weird as well.
- 30:52Speaker 3: What do you mean abandoned on the interstate.
- 30:54Speaker 4: One of the witnesses said the vehicle had veered towards
- 30:57Speaker 4: the center lane and hit the barrier and stopped.
- 31:01Speaker 8: It was a truck driver heading north on I five
- 31:04Speaker 8: who claims he saw someone jump right out of the
- 31:06Speaker 8: moving vehicle.
- 31:07Speaker 4: And he sees somebody jump out of the passenger side.
- 31:10Speaker 8: Of the vehicle, the passenger side of the vehicle. And
- 31:12Speaker 8: what was the description given of this individual?
- 31:15Speaker 4: They initially said a white male, but basically a male,
- 31:20Speaker 4: and then ran towards the woods off the Interstate.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Police searched a two mile radius on those woods by
- 31:27Speaker 8: air and on the ground, but never found any sign
- 31:30Speaker 8: of what might have been Logan. One possible sighting of
- 31:34Speaker 8: a naked team later that night brings even more intrigue
- 31:38Speaker 8: to the case. What about this black guy who was
- 31:40Speaker 8: seeing without any clothes wandering around.
- 31:42Speaker 4: We thought that might have been Logan as well, And
- 31:45Speaker 4: so they did initiate a search using dogs and didn't
- 31:49Speaker 4: locate anything.
- 31:50Speaker 8: You weren't able to identify who that was. Could have
- 31:53Speaker 8: been Logan, maybe.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Not could have been Logan, could have been anybody.
- 31:56Speaker 8: Inside the team's abandoned car. Cops found his wallet, ID
- 32:00Speaker 8: and cell phone, plus something that leads to even more
- 32:04Speaker 8: unanswered questions.
- 32:05Speaker 4: One of the curious things was in the center council
- 32:08Speaker 4: of the vehicle were some bags of grocery bags, which
- 32:13Speaker 4: kind of led us to believe that if somebody was
- 32:15Speaker 4: on the driver's side going over to the passenger side,
- 32:17Speaker 4: those bags would have been knocked down. So a theory
- 32:20Speaker 4: we have that there might have been two people and
- 32:23Speaker 4: the truck driver only saw one person, and.
- 32:25Speaker 8: They can't explain other strange occurrences either. What's so bizarre
- 32:30Speaker 8: is the check in at Facebook.
- 32:31Speaker 3: It's very bizarre and unexplainable.
- 32:35Speaker 8: Digital clue in the case came one week after Logan vanished.
- 32:39Speaker 4: He did a check in on his Facebook page at
- 32:41Speaker 4: the Olympia Regional Airport.
- 32:43Speaker 8: If he's checking in via his own Facebook page, and
- 32:46Speaker 8: you're saying, no one else had the password.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Right that you know of, that we know of, So.
- 32:51Speaker 8: Either someone is trying to throw law enforcement off or
- 32:55Speaker 8: in fact, this is indeed Logan right correct. And nearly
- 33:01Speaker 8: a year after he disappeared, there's been no sign of
- 33:05Speaker 8: Logan Shindleman.
- 33:06Speaker 4: I have no reason believe he's been killed. I have
- 33:08Speaker 4: no reason believe he's alive.
- 33:10Speaker 8: But his family might just have a few reasons. Who
- 33:14Speaker 8: benefits from Logan's disappearance. Up next, police question a possible
- 33:23Speaker 8: person of interest.
- 33:25Speaker 4: He was investigated and submitted to a polygraph.
- 33:28Speaker 8: And some wonder could there be a possible reason he
- 33:31Speaker 8: doesn't want to be found. We were told you were
- 33:35Speaker 8: trying to keep Logan away from the black side of
- 33:38Speaker 8: his family.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Go back to the disappearance of a teen in Washington State.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Let's head back to our Jason Letteria Chris.
- 33:47Speaker 8: Was he trying to disappear or did someone make him disappear?
- 33:51Speaker 8: Those are the questions that police and the family of
- 33:54Speaker 8: nineteen year old Logan Shindlemen are trying to answer. What
- 33:59Speaker 8: happened to Logan Shindleman. I don't know.
- 34:04Speaker 12: You don't have a day when you forget about him,
- 34:07Speaker 12: or you don't think about him.
- 34:09Speaker 8: The boy with the big smile vanished without a trace.
- 34:14Speaker 8: So Logan's vehicle is in the middle of the interstate, abandoned,
- 34:20Speaker 8: correct leaving detectives baffled and his family bitterly divided. We
- 34:27Speaker 8: were told that you were trying to keep.
- 34:31Speaker 9: Logan away from the black side of his family.
- 34:35Speaker 8: Logan Shindleman was raised by his grandmother, Jenny Geebo here
- 34:39Speaker 8: in Tumwater, Washington. Logan returned home to live with his
- 34:44Speaker 8: grandma after just one year in college.
- 34:47Speaker 15: He's kind of been a loss for what he was.
- 34:48Speaker 8: Gonna do with his slight, and according to her, he
- 34:53Speaker 8: started to smoke marijuana.
- 34:55Speaker 16: I know he did a lot of smoke upon him,
- 34:57Speaker 16: and I wondered sometimes if that it cost a little
- 35:00Speaker 16: bit of paranoia.
- 35:00Speaker 8: Jenny believes her grandson was paranoid the morning he told
- 35:04Speaker 8: her he had an epiphany. She told him that they
- 35:07Speaker 8: talked that afternoon, but Logan simply vanished The next day.
- 35:12Speaker 8: His car was abandoned in the middle of Interstate five.
- 35:16Speaker 8: Detectives are even more perplexed after finding Logan's wallet, ID
- 35:21Speaker 8: and cell phone inside his convertible. If Logan's gonna run
- 35:24Speaker 8: away on his own, is he gonna leave his cell
- 35:26Speaker 8: phone in his wallet?
- 35:28Speaker 4: Normally you would say no. The people don't do that.
- 35:32Speaker 8: If Logan didn't run away on his own, who would
- 35:35Speaker 8: want to get rid of him.
- 35:38Speaker 4: They have one part of the family saying there's somebody responsible,
- 35:42Speaker 4: on the other side of the family that is saying,
- 35:45Speaker 4: you know, nobody's responsible.
- 35:46Speaker 8: Logan's uncle, Mike, worked in law enforcement for years, and
- 35:50Speaker 8: there was one person he thought detectives should investigate.
- 35:54Speaker 12: If it were in the hall, would be the tension
- 35:58Speaker 12: and the hostility that's going on with his sister and
- 36:04Speaker 12: her boyfriend.
- 36:05Speaker 8: Uncle Mike claims when Logan returned from college, life at
- 36:09Speaker 8: his grandmother's home had become very difficult.
- 36:12Speaker 12: He was very upset about the boyfriend living in the home.
- 36:17Speaker 8: Logan's half sister had moved in her boyfriend, and according
- 36:21Speaker 8: to the uncle, he and Logan didn't get along.
- 36:24Speaker 12: We know that at some point there were fights, physical fights.
- 36:29Speaker 8: We asked Logan's grandma about Uncle Mike's allegations.
- 36:33Speaker 16: They didn't particularly like each other, but they just kind
- 36:35Speaker 16: of avoided each other.
- 36:37Speaker 8: Detective for ALEI questioned the living boyfriend, who agreed to
- 36:40Speaker 8: take a polygraph test.
- 36:42Speaker 4: I asked him if he was responsible for the disappearance
- 36:45Speaker 4: of Logan, and I asked him if he knew who
- 36:47Speaker 4: was responsible for the disparent of Logan, and he answered
- 36:51Speaker 4: notable questions. And my opinion was on it that he
- 36:55Speaker 4: was not showing any deception when I asked those questions.
- 36:58Speaker 12: Polygraphs are not perfect. There's a possibility that he could
- 37:01Speaker 12: pass a polygraph somehow without being truthful.
- 37:04Speaker 8: Cops have never charged the boyfriend in connection with Logan's disappearance. Now,
- 37:09Speaker 8: another theory detectives have considered is whether Logan's alleged drug
- 37:13Speaker 8: use may have gotten him into trouble.
- 37:16Speaker 4: We don't know if he maybe old people money, or
- 37:19Speaker 4: if he might have gotten some bad drugs or maybe
- 37:22Speaker 4: done some other drugs. That's one of the theories.
- 37:25Speaker 8: The problem is there's no evidence that a crime has
- 37:28Speaker 8: even been committed.
- 37:29Speaker 4: You know, he could very well just be out there
- 37:31Speaker 4: right now and want to be left alone.
- 37:32Speaker 8: But why would Logan want to be left alone? His
- 37:35Speaker 8: aunt Tina has a theory that only makes the mystery
- 37:38Speaker 8: deep and further.
- 37:39Speaker 17: Maybe he saw this the only way to get out
- 37:41Speaker 17: of this conflict, this dysfunctional family of his.
- 37:44Speaker 8: Before going away to college, Logan secretly met one side
- 37:48Speaker 8: of his family for the very first time, The Black Side.
- 37:52Speaker 8: Tina Crarey says it was an emotional visit.
- 37:55Speaker 17: I showed him a picture of his grandfather, my older brother,
- 37:59Speaker 17: and he stared at it. He said, he goes, it
- 38:02Speaker 17: feels good to see someone that looks like me.
- 38:04Speaker 8: She believes Logan was desperate to learn more about his background.
- 38:09Speaker 17: He wanted some answers and he wasn't getting them at home.
- 38:12Speaker 8: Tina Crarey claims Logan didn't want his grandmother to know
- 38:16Speaker 8: about their visit.
- 38:17Speaker 17: He said, if she finds out that I came here,
- 38:20Speaker 17: she's going to be really mad.
- 38:21Speaker 9: We were told that you were trying to keep Logan
- 38:26Speaker 9: away from the black side of his family.
- 38:30Speaker 15: Yeah, I don't think that's true.
- 38:31Speaker 16: They made no effort to get home and see him,
- 38:35Speaker 16: and I had pretty much not talked to his father
- 38:39Speaker 16: his grandfather in.
- 38:41Speaker 15: Years, years and years, so there was just no connection.
- 38:45Speaker 15: I wasn't actively trying to keep him away.
- 38:49Speaker 8: No one knows if Logan met up with a sinister
- 38:52Speaker 8: fate or if he is running from bitter family strife.
- 38:56Speaker 12: He's welcome to come back any time without an explanation,
- 39:03Speaker 12: and I think he knows that.
- 39:04Speaker 8: But until more clue surface, his family is left only
- 39:08Speaker 8: with speculation and desperate Please, if you don't.
- 39:12Speaker 15: Want to be here, that's fine, but give a hold
- 39:14Speaker 15: of us, let us know that you're okay.
- 39:16Speaker 17: And if you need to stay away in order to
- 39:18Speaker 17: feel secure, I wish you well and I send you off.
- 39:23Speaker 6: Love,
