- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm our host Anna McGivern for October 3rd.
- 0:11Today is World Smile Day, celebrated annually on the 1st
- 0:15Friday in October. This uplifting holiday has a
- 0:18wonderful back story that began with a commercial artist named
- 0:21Harvey Ball from Worcester, MA. In 1963, Ball was commissioned
- 0:28by an insurance company to create a graphic to boost
- 0:30employee morale. He designed the now iconic
- 0:34yellow :) in less than 10 minutes, for which he was paid
- 0:38just $45.00. That simple design became one of
- 0:42the most recognizable symbols in the world.
- 0:46But as the :) became commercialized and sometimes
- 0:50used in ways that contradicted its cheerful spirit, Ball became
- 0:54concerned. In 1999, he created World Smile
- 0:58Day to reclaim the original purpose of his creation, to
- 1:03promote genuine kindness and good cheer.
- 1:05The catch phrase for World Smile Day is simple but powerful.
- 1:10Do an act of kindness help one person smile?
- 1:14Since that first celebration, World Smile Day has spread
- 1:17across the globe, reminding us that sometimes the smallest
- 1:21gesture, a smile, can have the biggest impact.
- 1:26Today's quote comes from author William Arthur Ward, who once
- 1:32said a warm smile is the universal language of kindness.
- 1:37Ward's observation captures exactly what Harvey Ball
- 1:40understood when he created World Smile Day.
- 1:43A smile transcends language barriers, cultural differences,
- 1:47and social boundaries. It's a form of communication
- 1:50that every human being understands, regardless of where
- 1:54they're from or what language they speak.
- 1:57Think about the power contained in something as simple as a
- 1:59smile. It costs nothing to give but can
- 2:02be priceless to receive. A genuine smile can diffuse
- 2:06tension, create connection, brighten someone's difficult
- 2:09day, or simply acknowledge another person's humanity.
- 2:15In a world that often feels divided and disconnected, a
- 2:19smile is a small act of rebellion, a declaration that
- 2:24kindness still matters. What makes words insight so
- 2:28profound is the word warm. Not just any smile, but a warm 1
- 2:34Genuine, heartfelt, offered without expectation of return.
- 2:39That's what distinguishes real kindness from mere politeness.
- 2:42A warm smile says, I see you, I recognize your humanity, and I
- 2:47wish you well. Harvey Ball understood this when
- 2:50he created World Smile Day. He wanted to remind us that we
- 2:54all have the power to spread kindness through this simplest
- 2:57of gestures. We don't need money, influence
- 3:00our special skills, we just need to be willing to share a genuine
- 3:04smile. So today, embrace the spirit of
- 3:08World Smile Day by following Harvey Ball's simple direction.
- 3:12Do an act of kindness and help one person smile.
- 3:16It doesn't have to be grand or complicated.
- 3:19Maybe it's offering a genuine compliment to a Co worker.
- 3:23Maybe it's letting someone get ahead of you in line.
- 3:26Maybe it's simply making eye contact and smiling warmly at
- 3:29people you encounter. The cashier, the mail carrier,
- 3:33that person you pass on the street.
- 3:36Remember William Arthur Ward's wisdom, A warm smile is the
- 3:40universal language of kindness. Today, be fluent in that
- 3:45language, share your smile generously, and watch how it
- 3:48ripples outward in ways you might never fully know.
- 3:52That's going to do it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:56for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:01Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
