- 0:07the 1934 baseball All-Star game was played at the Polo Grounds in New York City.
- 0:11It was actually the second year that the All-Star game was played, but it's the first game in which an audio recording still exists.
- 0:17the game featured an unbelievable 28 future Hall of Famers, and is well known among baseball historians for the performance of starting pitcher Carl Hubbell.
- 0:25Be sure to listen closely to the first inning when Hubbell strikes out five of the game's best hitters in succession.
- 0:31Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Fox, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin.
- 0:37You can find links to more info on the featured players, teams, and stadium in the episode description.

- 0:49Today we're out at the Polo Grounds, that historic old home of the New York Giants nestled in the Lee of Pugensbluff on the island of Manhattan.
- 0:57the occasion, of course, is the playing of the second annual All-Star baseball game between the outstanding performers of the National and the American Leagues.
- 1:05And boy, what an aggregation of Paul's daughters are wandering around there, down there on that field right now.
- 1:11the pick of the world, no question about that.
- 1:14the crowd is tremendous, the stands are packed all the way around. If you don't know the Polo Grounds, I'll just tell you quickly that it is a double-deck affair running about four-fifths to five-sixths of the way around the entire enclosure.
- 1:29There is only a small part of the grounds out in center field which is devoted to the bleachers.
- 1:35the rest is all double-deck grandstands.
- 1:37the grass looks as though it were absolutely as fine as the finest type of golf course green.
- 1:45It's perfect out there today and Henry Fabian has certainly done a great job.
- 1:49Every seat in the house is filled now, almost at least.
- 1:53I can't see any vacant seats any place from my place up here in the second tier off third base.
- 2:00It's just about a capacity crowd right now and undoubtedly every inch of the standing room will be taken before game time, which is in just a little less than fifteen minutes.
- 2:11the boys have drawn an absolutely perfect day for baseball.
- 2:15It's not too hot, but it's plenty hot enough to get a good sweat up when you're working out there on the field, but not too hot and not hot enough to be uncomfortable for the spectators, the customers.
- 2:27So it's just perfect all the way around. There's a slight breeze blowing, but not enough to affect fly balls in particular.
- 2:34You know, last year the first of these All-Star games was played out at Tremiskey Field in Chicago, and that ended with a victory for the younger league, the Americans, the final score being four to nothing.
- 2:44That day a young fellow who had his 20th birthday in big leagues baseball only the day before yesterday and who intends to quit as a regular at the end of this season,
- 2:53he broke up that ball game with a towering home run with a man on the pad.
- 3:00His name, as you all know, is Babe Ruth, or George Herman Ruth, if you will, and for years his specialty has been breaking up ball games.
- 3:08This is another year, however, and the National League is out to avenge that beating of 1933.
- 3:13the way that ball has been zipped around the bases so far, the dabbling infield plays, both teams have been pulling off, and the great running catches of long flies the outfielders have been snagging,
- 3:24it seems that a man must just be a magician to slap out a safe hit.
- 3:28But on the other hand, when you take a look at those batting averages of the two murderers rose, you must realize that they'll just snap into it one time or another and do the necessary to score some runs.
- 3:39And that's what the crowd.
- 3:43Leading off for the American League will be Charlie Geringer, whose second basing in 382 batting average has been one of the big reasons why the Detroit Tigers have been such thorns in the sides of the America of the New York Yankees all season, crawling right along all the time.
- 3:58They've been on top once in a while, but the Yankees have managed to cross the Fourth of July, which is supposed to be the old deadline, across the Fourth of July in the league.
- 4:08the national batting order starts off with Frankie Fritz, the old Fordham Flack, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 4:15By the way, as we run along, those of you who want to take these names down, be sure to add your pencil and paper and you can get them.
- 4:20We're going to run over the batting order again a little when we finish.
- 4:25Frankie Fritz, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and the captain of All-Star Nationals today, he's been camping around second base so long that that position has given up all its secrets to him.
- 4:36And his punch this year is at a 310-quid.
- 4:40Heini Manoush of the Washington Americans is second on the American batting order, and he'll be out there patrolling the left field garden.
- 4:47He's the only man posting a 400 batting average. His average is 402, by the way.
- 4:53He'll look all both stuff to those opposing pitches.
- 4:56Pye Trainor, Pye Trainor, third baseman to Prince George by.
- 5:01He's the new pirate manager, you know, and he'll take care of the hot corner for the Nationals.
- 5:06And if he can't do it, well then, just nobody can, that's all.
- 5:09He's hitting at a 352-quid, and he surely will play up to the great standards that he's set for years out there in Pittsburgh.
- 5:17Dave Bruce will be these old right field stands for the Americans, the man with the all-time record of 699 home runs in his major league career,
- 5:26and who probably has been given more intentional passes than any other man ever in baseball.
- 5:32For the bib, his batting average is very few near this year, 291.
- 5:37the Nationals' number three man is Joe Medley, who, with the Dean brothers and Frankie Frisch,
- 5:43is largely responsible for keeping the Cardinals up near the top.
- 5:47He's hitting 361.
- 5:49the American League has chosen Columbia Lue of the Yankees to fill the cleanup position,
- 5:56and Pyeke Kyler of the Cubs gets the call from the Nationals.
- 6:00Gary Gunn first at such an old institution, the little meat he's fed of him.
- 6:04He's baseball's iron man, and he's well in the running for both batting and home run leadership in his league.
- 6:10He's batting 369 at present.
- 6:12Pyeke Kyler is a right field ball hook, and he's scored the Willow-wielding average of 343 at present.
- 6:20Next for the Americans is Jimmy Foxx.
- 6:23We had thought he would not be playing, but he's going to play according to the official lineup.
- 6:27Of course, Jimmy is a great star and home run hitter for Connie Mack down in Philadelphia,
- 6:32and he's first basing is just too well known to need any talking about.
- 6:38Foxx is massaging the fellas at a 345 clip.
- 6:42He's playing third today for the Americans.
- 6:45Wally Berger, the Boston Braves' center fielder, is a real ball hook,
- 6:50one who gladdens the heart of Bill McKechnie as manager,
- 6:53and one of the principal reasons why the Braves are always a menace.
- 6:56He's hitting his free-16.
- 6:59Al Simmons of the White Sox of Chicago comes next in the Americans' batting order.
- 7:04He'll do the center feeling, a staff, utterly graceful fly chaser, and always dangerous at the plate.
- 7:10How many of us who were there will ever forget that athletic rally of 10 runs against the Cubs in the World Series several years ago,
- 7:17a rally started by Simmons' ringing home run against the left field stand.
- 7:21He batted twice in that inning.
- 7:23He's singing the ball for a 343 standing.
- 7:27Then we have Bill Terry on the Nationals.
- 7:30Memphis Bill, the manager and first backer of the Nationals.
- 7:33He places himself sixth in the batting order in spite of a fine average of 368,
- 7:39the highest of the national team regulars.
- 7:41As everyone knows, he's also manager of the world champion New York Giants,
- 7:45and he's out in front now in quest of his second pennant and, of course, his second World Series.
- 7:51Joe Conan of the Americans is not only manager of the team,
- 7:54but also manager of last year's American League champions, the Senators of Washington.
- 7:58Joe's pitching has fallen down on him a bit this year,
- 8:01but if those hurlers begin to click as they should, his team may be right up there yet.
- 8:06Joe will be in there doing a lot of shortstopping,
- 8:08and he's much more dangerous at the plate than his 283 average might indicate in this group of terrific super sluggers.
- 8:16Travis Jackson, Jackson of the Giants.
- 8:19He batted seventh for the Nationals.
- 8:21He's long been called the greatest shortstop in baseball,
- 8:24a player who seemed up to be all washed up last winter on account of trouble with his leg.
- 8:28But trouble just doesn't mean a thing to Jackson,
- 8:31and he's in there with his whip-forward arm tossing runners out from any and all positions
- 8:36and holding up his end with a bat with an average of 287.
- 8:40He's one of the most opportune hitters in the game today.
- 8:43Behind the bat, the Americans have Bill Dickens of the Yankees,
- 8:47and the Nationals have Gabby Harkness of the Cubs.
- 8:50Both powerful forward for their team,
- 8:53and a possessing fine arm to intimidate potential base dealers, and both have certainly –
- 8:59that's certain something that helps in steady pitchers at critical moments.
- 9:03Dickie is batting 322 right now with Harkness just exactly the same,
- 9:08so there's nothing to choose there.
- 9:10the backstopping will be well taken care of.
- 9:13Two of the truly great pitchers of today will oppose each other in the starting lineup,
- 9:17probably for three innings each.
- 9:19Signor Leslie Gomez of the Yankees and Carl Hubbell of the Giants.
- 9:24If these two are the starters, and I'm sure they will be now,
- 9:28there should be a southpaw battle for three innings at least.
- 9:31That'll be worth traveling mighty far to see.
- 9:34Gomez has already won 14 games for the Yankees,
- 9:37and Hubbell has a rating among many who should know as the greatest living pitcher,
- 9:42and by not a few as a man who is coming along to take his place as the greatest of all time.
- 9:48Man, also look at those batting orders.
- 9:51Not a soft spot from top to bottom.
- 9:54They're tough. Not the slightest chance for a pitching lead-up.
- 9:58Just groove one for any man in that lot, and bang, there goes your old ballgame.
- 10:04Will it be pitcher or will it be hitter?
- 10:06A difference of opinion, eh?
- 10:08Well, that's what makes Posh Racing.
- 10:12Aside from the players mentioned, the Americans have as a pitcher Red Ruffing of the Yankees,
- 10:19Tom Bridges of the Tigers, Mel Harder of the Indians,
- 10:23Tom Housmel is going pretty good, Tom Manning of Cleveland ought to know all about him,
- 10:29Jack Russell of the Senators, infielders, Frank Higgins of the Athletics,
- 10:34Jimmy Dyke to the White Sox, outfielders, Earl Averill of the Indians,
- 10:40Ben Chapman of the Yanks, and Sammy West of the Browns.
- 10:44Of course, Tom Manning thinks that both Mel Harder and Earl Averill should be right in there now,
- 10:49in the beginning of the game.
- 10:51But they're not, and we'll probably see them all later.
- 10:54Catching, Rick Sparrow of the Red Sox.
- 10:57I'm talking about extra players now, you know.
- 11:00the Nationals have pitchers, Lon Warnocky, that's great stuff for the Cubs,
- 11:06Dizzy Dean, who with his brother is keeping the Cubs right up near the top,
- 11:11Van Mungo from the Dodgers, and over in Brooklyn they think Van Mungo is the greatest pitcher in either league,
- 11:18and I'm not sure he is.
- 11:20With a lowly team this year, unfortunately, for the Dodgers,
- 11:24Van Mungo has been pitching great balls.
- 11:26Then they also have Fred Frankhouse of the Braves.
- 11:29There seems to be the general opinion around, among those who might know something about it,
- 11:34that the National League pitching will top the American League pitching today to some extent,
- 11:40but pretty soon you'll know all about it.
- 11:42As extra infielders in the Nationals, Pepper Martin of the Cards,
- 11:48he's that baby that went crazy in just about one of World Series all by himself a few years ago, three years ago, 31.
- 11:55Floyd Vaughn of the Pirates, we had thought that Floyd might go in, play in shortstop right away.
- 12:01As Jackson has had some eye trouble, but Jackson will start.
- 12:07Billy Harmon of the Cubs, outfielders for the Nationals, extra men, Paul Wehner of the Pirates,
- 12:13Mel Otter of the Giants, and Chuck Klein of the Cubs.
- 12:16Just think of a baseball team that keeps Paul Wehner, Mel Otter, and Chick Klein on the base.
- 12:21Boy, oh boy.
- 12:23Also an extra catcher, Al Lopez of the Dodgers.
- 12:29the umpiring today done today will be by Rick Owens and Doug Moriarity from the American League,
- 12:36and Charlie Berman and Dolly Scott of the National League.
- 12:43Besides its manager, Joe Coleman, the American team will have the services of Walter Johnson,
- 12:49the old master pitcher from Washington, you know.
- 12:52Walter Johnson will be on the coaching line, and Al Shax will also be on the line.
- 12:58For the American League.
- 13:02And the National League team will be similarly served by manager Bill McKechnie and manager Casey Stengel.
- 13:09Casey Stengel, you know, I remember one day out here when Casey Stengel slapped out two home runs in the World Series,
- 13:15one of all games for the Giants.
- 13:17What a day that was for old Casey. No doubt about that.
- 13:21Anyway, all together it looks as though a grand and glorious baseball game was going to begin
- 13:27very, very soon.
- 13:29the managers of the teams, the captains of the teams, and the four umpires have gathered around the whole place
- 13:35for a last-minute conference before this ballgame starts.
- 13:39I don't think there's a seat in the house.
- 13:41That means there must be somewhere in the neighborhood of 55,000 to 60,000 people crammed in the polar grounds
- 13:47this afternoon on one of the most beautiful baseball days you ever saw in your life.
- 13:53Both Gomez and Hubbell are down there left-handing them into their catches on the sidelines,
- 14:01getting warmed up for the game.
- 14:03And I want you all to know that in a few moments we'll turn the microphone over to Tom Manning of Cleveland.
- 14:10Tom, you know, has been telling you about World Series since time immemorial.
- 14:15And he's also going to give us play-by-play scoring today.
- 14:20Tommy Manning, that paratop redhead from Cleveland, Ohio.
- 14:24Yeah, quit that, Tom.
- 14:26And also with us is Ford Bond.
- 14:29Ford Bond has been telling you all about the baseball scores daily through this season.
- 14:34And he's been making a fine baseball game out of the news results following the game.
- 14:42Ford has been telling you about every game.
- 14:45They haven't missed a game yet, have they, Ford?
- 14:47No, he says he hasn't missed a game.
- 14:49Of course, if he falls out of this box he might miss tomorrow's game, but he will try to keep him in.
- 14:57the field has been cleared now.
- 14:59the boys are still standing around.
- 15:02the home plate, Joe Cronin and Bill Terry and I see Walter Johnson is there too.
- 15:10And I believe, I don't know whether it's going to be before the game or not, but I believe it will.
- 15:16It will be the unveiling of the tablet for John McGrath.
- 15:22John McGrath, the Little Napoleon, as he was called for many years,
- 15:26after the drapes have been pulled back from the tablet commemorating the history of John McGrath and the Giants.
- 15:34It's out in center field.
- 15:36the tablet to McGrath is located just above the tomb.
- 15:40Not the tomb, it isn't exactly a tomb, but the stone plaque out in center field at the center field exit
- 15:47which was erected some years ago for that world boy, Captain Eddie Grant, formerly of the Giants.
- 15:55Just above the memorial to Eddie Grant is a plaque to Chrissie Matthewsons,
- 16:03who many people say, many of the old enthusiasts claim was absolutely the greatest picture of all time.
- 16:10Rock Young also is in memory out there with another plaque next to Chrissie Matthewsons.
- 16:17Rock Young, you know, was that great outfielder of the New York Giants some years ago,
- 16:23and the Giants and the world locked in.
- 16:26Eddie Grant, Chrissie Matthewsons, and Rock Young, and now above all of these is placed the bronze plaque
- 16:33in memory of John McGrath, one of the greatest leaders of baseball men who ever lived,
- 16:40unquestionably, and one of the real old timers.
- 16:44He and Connie Mack were up to a short time ago were the only two of the real old timers left,
- 16:50and now we have but one, Connie Mack, who I believe is now in his 72nd year.
- 16:57I believe Connie is that old, but to know Connie you would never think he was that old.
- 17:04And it was a terrific blow to baseball, of course, to lose John McGrath,
- 17:09but he felt that he was not in good health.
- 17:12He resigned from his managership of the New York Giants, and they were his greatest love all his life.
- 17:19And it wasn't very long before it seemed that the body simply could not hold his soul any longer
- 17:27after he had lost his beloved Giants, and so he passed from it.
- 17:34Now this ballgame is going to start in just a very few moments,
- 17:37and I think Tommy Manning would like to warm himself up here talking for a few moments
- 17:41before this baseball game commences.
- 17:45Tommy Manning will tell you first about the play, the play-by-play through the entire game.
- 17:53Between innings, we have, Ford Bond will talk to us and give us some of the high spots inning by inning.
- 18:00After the game it will be my pleasure to come back again on the microphone
- 18:04and talk about the game to some extent. Not too long, I hope.
- 18:08And now Mr. Brian McNamee speaking, the National Broadcasting Company,
- 18:15the National Broadcasting Company is sending you the details of this game, and here's Red Tom Manning.
- 18:22Come in, Tom.
- 18:32Good afternoon, everybody.
- 18:34As James has told you, it is really a great day here at the Polar Grounds in New York,
- 18:38and what a ballgame we all anticipate.
- 18:41Before we get started this afternoon, I want you to know that Ford Bond is going to speak to you throughout the game,
- 18:47and if you don't mind, as William McNamee, of course, has given all of us so many fine thrills
- 18:53during his broadcasting career, we're mighty happy to send you today,
- 18:57and to congratulate William McNamee, today is his birthday, it's that night, Ford.
- 19:02That's right, that's right, James is celebrating a birthday,
- 19:05enjoying all of his presents and claiming, what is it, 26 or 24, that he was asking about a while ago.
- 19:10Well, the players are all walking out now to have their pictures taken,
- 19:13together with a few of the umpires, the national leaguers have come out.
- 19:16Today the National League are wearing their home uniforms,
- 19:20and of course each one of them decorated with their individual insignia of the teams,
- 19:24the cubic cardinals and the pirates and the giants, all of them down there.
- 19:27Just for a moment, while we have time, we're going to check through this batting order
- 19:30so that you have it firmly in your mind or on your sheet if you're following
- 19:34and keeping scores of the play-by-play account which will be given you by Tom Manning.
- 19:39We'll check through the American batting order here for the moment.
- 19:42Gehringer will lead off, Gehringer the second baseman on the American lineup today.
- 19:48This will be followed by Manning, and the crowd rings out with applause
- 19:53for that National League crowd as they stand out.
- 19:55They're all having their picture taken, almost as many ballplayers as there are photographers,
- 19:59but I think the photographers outnumber them.
- 20:01Manoush is second, then Ruth, third in the lineup,
- 20:06which is his usual place in the Yankees' batting order,
- 20:09followed by that thundering artilleryman who bombards almost every park
- 20:13that he gets into, 24 home runs so far this season, Lou Gehry.
- 20:17First four, Gehringer, Manoush, Ruth, and Gehry.
- 20:22Then fifth in the batting order and wearing the number five today is Fox,
- 20:27Manning third base here in the starting lineup,
- 20:30followed by that crashing center fielder, Simmons.
- 20:34Simmons is sixth and also wearing that number.
- 20:37Then Cronin, placing himself seventh in the batting order.
- 20:40He occupied fourth in the Senators' batting order of his home team.
- 20:44He's managing this club today, this American League club,
- 20:48and he's placed himself seventh in the batting order.
- 20:51Bill Dickey, the catcher, occupying the eighth place, and Gomez, the starting pitcher, the ninth.
- 20:57Now the players have broken up down there for the moment
- 21:00and are running up to their position,
- 21:02so we'll go through the National League batting order right quickly here.
- 21:05Fresh, leadoff man and second baseman of the National League team today.
- 21:10Schreiner, third baseman and occupying the second place in the batting order.
- 21:15Medwick, followed by Kyler, Kaikai Kyler, the right fielder.
- 21:20Then Berger, Perry, Jackson, next, who is playing short.
- 21:26the thought that Vaughn might start with Jackson, goes in the start.
- 21:29Hartnett, Gabby Hartnett, the catch-up catcher,
- 21:33who is starting off as catcher for the National League, is down there now.
- 21:37He's put on his protector and he's in guard,
- 21:39and Hubbell walks out and picks up a ball on the mound,
- 21:43and Hubbell occupying the ninth position in the batting order.
- 21:47They're warming up, now tossing over a few to Gabby Hartnett, who wings it back,
- 21:51and the infielders are tossing the ball around.
- 21:53It goes over to Bill Terry, he wings it across on the ground,
- 21:55over to Pied Schreiner on third.
- 21:59Getting just about ready, and Gehringer, the second baseman,
- 22:02leadoff man for the American League team,
- 22:05is up there now measuring his batting feeling of it,
- 22:08and here's Tom Manning to give you the start of this great game,
- 22:11the all-stars of the American and National Leagues,
- 22:14and he's got his bat with Gehringer up there at the plate, and here's Tom Manning.
- 22:18Well, just about steps are going on.
- 22:20the tournament is behind the plate, umpiring.
- 22:22the tournament is the National League, you know.
- 22:24Short quality of the American League is at third.
- 22:26Rick Owens is at first, and Dolly Stock is at second base.
- 22:29Dolly Gehringer steps into the battered box.
- 22:32Here's the windup.
- 22:33the big Paul Hubbell and the first ball kick.
- 22:36It's a foul down first base, right one.
- 22:39the ball is received over there by Robert Johnson,
- 22:42the
- 22:46second baseman Indian, and with a lay from on with the ball,
- 22:48got away from Walder, and Phil Perry, manager and first baseman of today's game,
- 22:53finally receives the ball across the back to the National League dugout.
- 22:56Now ready to go again.
- 22:58Gehringer up, you know, spikes one.
- 23:00Foul, a fast ball,
- 23:02lifts to the outside corner of the plate,
- 23:04just a little bit too high.
- 23:06That one was not quite as fast as the first ball that Hubbell talked in there,
- 23:10Ball one and strike one on Charlie Gellinger.
- 23:14You know that great second baseman will be Detroit Tigers.
- 23:17Here it is. Ball two.
- 23:20Another hook ball. This is the outside corner of the plate.
- 23:23Hubbell stood there, bending down for a moment, looking in.
- 23:28Now that's the ball and the count on Charlie Gellinger.
- 23:32Ball two and strike one. Here it is.
- 23:36It's a base hit. Frankie Crick drives to the ball and a foul in the center field.
- 23:41It's Bumble Gellinger's bounding first going to second and close the goal.
- 23:45He's safe. He's safe at second base.
- 23:48That will be scored as a single for Charlie Gellinger and an error for center fielder Wally Berger.
- 23:58Charlie Gellinger with a top ball two and strike one.
- 24:01He's stopped him through the end field. Frankie Crick, the manager of the state, who was part of his playing second base,
- 24:07goes along the ground. It got Charlie missed his fingertips.
- 24:10Rolled on out in the center field where it was Bumble by Berger.
- 24:14Charlie Gellinger playing heads up around the first base and it was awful off of post at second.
- 24:19He split in and he had jacked him around the ground, but he is safe. He is on second.
- 24:24Now we have Hiney Manu, the left-hander of the Washington Senators.
- 24:28A big, off-key left-hand hitter is up. Hiney, though, is the only major leaguer who has a batting average of 402.
- 24:37the first pitch is a foul outside.
- 24:40Strike three. Hiney Manu was not giving on Bumble.
- 24:45He's gone from all the way back and the fouls aren't Hiney Manu.
- 24:49the second man up in the first inning.
- 24:51Ball one and strike one.
- 24:54Charlie Gellinger on second base. Nobody else.
- 24:57Here's the pitch. It's a foul.
- 25:00Hiney Manu taking almost a half-string.
- 25:03Gabby Hartman going around pointing his finger to the umpire with the ball in his hand.
- 25:08the umpire had called it a foul.
- 25:12So the count on Hiney Manu, a left-hander, is ball two and strike one.
- 25:17Here's the pitch. He swings. He misses.
- 25:20Strike two.
- 25:22Hiney Manu's quite taking a long cut-ass apron on God of Many Hazards.
- 25:27High on that right field.
- 25:29Please return to the ball of ground.
- 25:31It's 294 feet from home plate and about 15 feet high.
- 25:35the count on Manu, ball two, strike two.
- 25:37Nobody else. Gellinger on second.
- 25:39Here it is. Hubble pitching. Ball three.
- 25:41A hook ball with just a little bit low on the outside.
- 25:45Now the count on Hiney Manu. Ball three and strike two.
- 25:49It's the first inning of this all-star ball game at the ball of ground in New York.
- 25:53National Broadcasting Company sending you the description.
- 25:56Nobody else. Gellinger on second.
- 25:58Hiney Manu's with a count ball.
- 26:00Three, strike two. Something's got to happen.
- 26:03Here it is.
- 26:05It's a ball. A ball that was over the plate but just a little bit low.
- 26:09And Hiney Manu's lost.
- 26:12Now we have Hiney on first.
- 26:14Gellinger on second and the mighty Sultana Scott. Listen to that cheer for Faith Lue.
- 26:31Just at the moment, manager Bill Perry, Frankie Fritz,
- 26:35Travis Jackson, high trainer, a wall in there around Paul Hubble,
- 26:39and they're having, as Bill Mundy would say, a hook-bop gutter shooter in Hubble.
- 26:43And by the way, Bill Mundy is here with us in the box today.
- 26:46And a little later on, we're going to have Bill come over and say hello to you.
- 26:50I know you'll all be anxious to hear him.
- 26:52Ball players may come and they may go,
- 26:54but here is the king of them all in the battered box,
- 26:57pulling that old bat up and down enough to duck off his shoes,
- 27:00and he's ready to face the great Paul Hubble.
- 27:02the pitch hits his plate over the heart of the plate.
- 27:05Top ball strikes on Bay Route.
- 27:08It's the first inning, you know. Nobody else.
- 27:10Tiny Manouches on first, putting some of the base on ball.
- 27:13Charlie Gellinger is on second base.
- 27:16Here's the pitch.
- 27:18Ball is outside.
- 27:204-1 and strike one.
- 27:23Fans are all yelling, the American League fans are forced.
- 27:27the crowd is split here.
- 27:29And there the American League fans are forced to pull in for base
- 27:32to park one of the bleachers, one-on-one the pitch.
- 27:34He swings, he misses.
- 27:36It's a strike.
- 27:37Bay Route swung from way back on that one.
- 27:40He was aiming for it someplace over in Scroog and Scruff.
- 27:43I don't know, but he was certainly swinging from way back.
- 27:46Strike two and ball one is the count.
- 27:49Tiny Manouches on first.
- 27:50Charlie Gellinger is on second.
- 27:52Nobody is out.
- 27:53Paul Hubble, the great master league south ball, the giant is in the box.
- 27:57Here it is.
- 27:58Strike three, strike three, he's out.
- 28:13Boy oh boy what a thrill to see 60,000 fans shot out of the back.
- 28:18the mighty Bay Route is up there and with the master leaguers
- 28:22nervous with runners on first and second in this important ball game.
- 28:25Bay Route coming up there and with a count two and one.
- 28:28Kyle Hubble hooked one over the inside corner.
- 28:31the Bay pulled away and it was a called strike.
- 28:35Now we have one man out.
- 28:37But it isn't all over yet.
- 28:38They're all sluggish.
- 28:39Lou Gehrig is up and we're ready to go.
- 28:42Lou Gehrig knocks it up, Dauphin's shoes pull down, it's tapped,
- 28:45man takes his stand in there, hits the ball high outside.
- 28:50This boy, Gehrig, you know, is plenty responsible for the position
- 28:54of the New York Yankees in the American League.
- 28:56Here's the pitch.
- 28:57He brings the message, strike two.
- 29:08Lou Gehrig, the mighty hitting first backer of the New York Yankees
- 29:12is up there with runners on first and second.
- 29:15One man out.
- 29:18Foul, that was low inside.
- 29:21They're all ready to push it, but it's both low inside
- 29:25and out of the count and ball two and strike one.
- 29:30Gabby Hartman of the Chicago Cubs is the catcher.
- 29:34Kyle Hubble is in the box.
- 29:35the first inning, one man out, no score, runners on first and second.
- 29:40Here's the pitch to Gehrig.
- 29:42It's too low.
- 29:44Foul three.
- 29:46Brad Hartman, Kyle Hubble, he's working awfully hard out there.
- 29:51And well he should, the little ray of sluggers coming up.
- 29:58Jimmy Foxx is hanging around home plate.
- 30:00You've all heard of course of Jimmy Foxx.
- 30:02Dave Luce, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx following in a row.
- 30:07Murderous throw, make no mistake about it.
- 30:09Three and one is the counter.
- 30:10Here's the pitch.
- 30:11Hits it straight, tucks that ball right down the old alley.
- 30:14Gehrig has elected to work out his string with Kyle Hubble and all the count is ball three and strike two.
- 30:20It is very possible now that Gehrig around second,
- 30:23Manu John first will be off with the picture in motion.
- 30:26However, we have but one out.
- 30:28We shall see the attack of Bill Cullen on his next play.
- 30:31Three and two, you're off.
- 30:33Manu has a big lead off first.
- 30:34Where they go, they're running.
- 30:35Gehrig swings, he misses, he breaks out.
- 30:39But the double field was attempted and Gehrig is putting just ahead of the ball.
- 30:43And it's safe.
- 30:44By trainer, the third baseman for the National Leaguers is now arguing with umpire George Moriality.
- 30:50That was very, very close to Gehrig's swing and missed the first strike.
- 30:54And with the runners off with the picture in motion and all the count was three and two,
- 30:58and they were off, and Charlie Gehringer stood in just ahead of that throw.
- 31:02It was very, very close to George Moriality of the American League.
- 31:06That is goal right over that play at third base and declared Charlie Gehringer safe.
- 31:11It's a stolen base for Gehringer and a stolen base for Heine Menuh.
- 31:17Manager Bill Perry, Travis Jackson, and several of the other boys off walked over as far as the picture's box.
- 31:23But the argument at third base is over.
- 31:25They are now planning the attack on Jimmy Foxx, one of the greatest right-hand hitters of all time.
- 31:31While we have a moment, let us keep you in the picture again.
- 31:33It is the first inning of this all-strap ball game in the Polar Grounds of New York City.
- 31:37Charlie Gehringer is on third base. Heine Menuh of the Washington Senators is on second.
- 31:43We have two men out and that mighty hitter, Tom Coney Mack, Philadelphia athletic, is now at the plate.
- 31:50Carl Hubbell is winding up. Here's the picture Foxx. He swings, he misses.
- 31:55Like one, Boy Harvest Hubbell is burning him across the plate.
- 31:59Picking his old heart out there for the cause of the National League.
- 32:03Striking out with those two great hitters, Payne Bluth and Luke Garry, two men out,
- 32:08runners on second and third, Foxx is up.
- 32:11Strikes the pitch, ball one.
- 32:14That was a curve ball that bit the inside and accounted for one and strike one on Jimmy Foxx.
- 32:20Jimmy Foxx is playing third base for the American Leaguers this afternoon.
- 32:27Here's the windup again, ball one, strike one.
- 32:31It's a foul, foul up over the stands in the backhand to count on Jimmy Foxx in strike two.
- 32:36Gabby Harkness gets a new ball from O'Fyre Furbin and whips it down to Pye Crane of the Third.
- 32:42Crane takes his trouble, rubs it up a little and then runs halfway over to the picture Foxx where he crosses it to Carl Hubbell.
- 32:49Boy, what picking this trouble is doing out there. the first two men are up, down, on and then he's struck out.
- 32:55Bluth and Garry, and here's the pitch, strike two and ball one. Ball two, ball two.
- 33:01It was high outside and the count on Jimmy Foxx is strike two and ball two.
- 33:06Close score again in the first half of the first inning. Two men out.
- 33:10Garryger is on third, Manouche is on second and Foxx is up, two and two.
- 33:15And here it is, the pitch. He brings it, he goes, he goes, he's struck out.
- 33:20Boy, oh boy, oh boy, he's struck out. Three strikeouts for Carl Hubbell. Come in for a con.
- 33:28A ball player's dream, yes, for a manager's dream, and a pitcher's nightmare.
- 33:33That's what this is when you face these murderers' roles that come out here at a fast.
- 33:37And what an achievement that was of Carl Hubbell right here in this first inning.
- 33:41Here is a resume of what happened, just to go over it briefly.
- 33:44the American League first inning, character leading off, the count goes to two and one and he snaps a shot, single to center field,
- 33:50going into second base on Berger's error in center field, and he's led hot into second there with Fritz receiving a throw and the umpire called him safe.
- 33:58Single and an extra base on Berger's error.
- 34:02Then Manouche comes up and it goes to three and two, and then the next one sails over, is a ball, and Manouche walks, and it's two men on base.
- 34:10And nobody out, and then it's two, that big conference there in the infield with Bill Terry.
- 34:15Come over to find out how you saw a pitcher, Carl Hubbell, what's going to do with two men on, and then these two murderers coming up, Dave Ruth and Gary.
- 34:23Well, Ruth steps up there, the count went to one and one ball and two strikes, and then the babe's standing there looking at one,
- 34:29and it comes over and the umpire's hand goes up in the air, and the man is out. Yes, sir. Dave, called out on site.
- 34:35Gary comes up, and he goes out swinging, and Gehringer and Manouche go down to second and third, third and second and second.
- 34:42And then Jimmy Fox comes up and strikes out a great achievement, Carl Hubbell. Here we go into the second half of first inning, Tom Manning.
- 34:48Mikey first is up, second base, swing it over, manager to St. Louis Cardinals, Mikey Batson right handed.
- 34:55Lepsey Gomez is in the box for the American Leaguers. Mikey gets a home run, going, going, going, hits high, up into the pieces,
- 35:05and a home run, a home run for Frankie Frech, Mr. Watzwau. Yes, indeed, Frankie Frech certainly got a hold of that one,
- 35:29and parked it in the upper deck of the right field pavilion, directly up about 40 feet above the 395 foot sign.
- 35:38That ball was well hit, and now we have Pye Trainer up, another right hand batter.
- 35:43Strike, home, that was a curved ball that Gomez had over the outside corner of the plate, and the count on Pye Trainer is strike one.
- 35:52the next one, it's a ball, high outside, and the count is ball one, and strike one.
- 36:02Just imagine what we've seen here in the first inning so far. Sorry, oh boy.
- 36:07It's a foul up the serves and back of the plate, and the count on Frankie Frech is strike two, and ball one.
- 36:14Frech steps out of the box for a moment, knocks the dirt off his shoes, and then steps back in there again.
- 36:21What he finds, that's a goal man walking around the second base side of the box, mumbling the rosin bags.
- 36:28But now we're ready to go, strike two and ball one on Pye Trainer.
- 36:32Between the misses, it was a tip ball that got away from Bill Dickey, so the count remains strike two and ball one.
- 36:40Well the Max DeLeacus are out of the court now, of course, by the score of one to nothing.
- 36:44This is the last half of the first inning. Nobody on, Frankie Frech, first up, smacks out a homer.
- 36:50Has the ground ball down, second base play, Goehringer is up with it, passes to Gary Haines.
- 36:56Pye Trainer is out at first, one man out, and nobody on.
- 37:01That was a nice play by Charlie Goehringer. Charlie, of course, makes a lot of brilliant plays down there at second base.
- 37:06He had to run over Pye to his right, and he whips the ball underhand, full high to Lou Gehrig.
- 37:13We have one man out, and Joe Medwick is up.
- 37:18Joe Medwick, also the same little start, he bats him right handed, hits the first ball, hits a high, flies into the left field.
- 37:25Men whose coming over, Coleman going out.
- 37:28Coleman ran all the way out near the stands, but Josh failed to make the catch, and it is a strike.
- 37:35Coleman went a long way out for that one.
- 37:38Heidi Menuh is playing over in deep left center field for Joe Medwick, and the ball was hit just alongside of the creatures out here in the left field corner.
- 37:48Joe Coleman just barely had his fingertips on that ball, but couldn't hold it.
- 37:52Players are walking back to their positions rather slowly now. Heidi Menuh is back to left field, and Coleman and Fox coming in to third and short.
- 38:00Now ready to go again.
- 38:02Leslie Gomez in the box. Medwick is up.
- 38:05Fights on the pitch. It's a foul.
- 38:08Up over the first box, and the count on Joe Medwick is strike two.
- 38:13Last half of the first inning.
- 38:15the National Leaguers won the first game.
- 38:18Strike two. Last half of the first inning. the National Leaguers won. American Leaguers nothing.
- 38:27Joey Medwick, one of the finest looking young ball players to come up in years, is at the plate.
- 38:32Strike two, and here's the pitch.
- 38:34Wings! And misses.
- 38:38He thought it was a tip ball, but it was not. He is still claiming it was a tip ball.
- 38:42Nicky dropped the ball and tagged him out, but Medwick is still talking to the umpire, but the umpire says it was not a tip ball, and he has declared out a strikeout.
- 38:55Now we have two men out and nobody on.
- 38:57Joey Medwick thought that he tipped that ball, but if he did, the umpire did not hear it, and it was the third strike swinging.
- 39:06Two outs, nobody on.
- 39:08Ty Ty Carter, the Chicago Cubs, is a high interlocutor batting in right-handed this afternoon.
- 39:14Ty is quite a ball player. He's been up a long time, and Benny Innsbill is given the Master League Bench.
- 39:23Ball! High outside.
- 39:26Nick hits the plate, and it's ball two.
- 39:30Ty Carter is up there the last half of the first inning.
- 39:33Two outs, nobody on, and it's not a ball two.
- 39:37the second inning, if a crowd is on shortstop weight, Bullman comes up with it, tosses it to Kerrigs, and Tyler is out at first.
- 39:44Patrick Tire, the Master League is in the first inning, has one run, on one hit.
- 39:48At the end of the first inning, the Master League has won, the American League has nothing to win for.
- 39:54And what a thrill rang through these fans when Frankie Frisch stepped up to that plate.
- 40:00A ball shot over, and it was called a ball, and he settled himself, gave a hit to his fans, wiped his hands on the dirt, picked up that bat, leaned over the plate,
- 40:09and looked at the next delivery that Gomez shot in, and wanged it high, hard, and far into the upper deck of the right field fans for a thrilling over.
- 40:17And how that guys lifted the fans out of their seats, a thrill when that ball leans to the back of the bat and smashes straight and direct for those upper right field fans.
- 40:27So a run came in, and Gomez settled down, Boehner, the second man in the National League batting order, came up, the count went down to second base,
- 40:34Kerrigs came over, gave it up fast, shot it to Kerrigs over on first, and he was out.
- 40:39One out, he's in the National League's first inning.
- 40:41Then Medwick, Medwick came to bat, shut down, Tyler came up, shot it down to corn, he's out corn to Kerrigs, and here we go with Simmons up at bat, I believe,
- 40:50in the second inning, and Tom Manning coming in to give it to you.
- 40:53Kyle Hubbell with the softball, the Giants is in the box again, Al Simmons, the right-hand hitter, is up the pitch, ball one, a fast ball, was high on the outside.
- 41:02As we went to the first half of the second inning, the National Leaguers are out in front by the score of one to nothing.
- 41:07Al Simmons leads off for the Americans in the second inning.
- 41:11He swings and misses, a mighty swing, turning all the way around, that's a beautiful pivot to know that Simmons has.
- 41:17Biggest pose in the dirt, swings all around, and the count is four to one, and strike one.
- 41:23Manager Joe Cronin is hanging around home plate, coming up next, the pitch, strike two!
- 41:31Al Ozzetto, screwball, came in there, stole the high, and then dove down, and Simmons swung over it, and the count is strike two and four to one.
- 41:42First man up for the American Leaguers in the second inning.
- 41:49Here's the pitch, he's out, he's swinging, strikes out, one dog.
- 41:55That was a change of pace off of the tall hubbell, had in there, letter high, Simmons took a good throw home and swung.
- 42:02Boy, that constitutes some sort of a record.
- 42:06Dave Lujerich, Jimmy Fox, and Al Simmons all striking out in succession.
- 42:13Boys and girls, this boy hubbell is a pitcher.
- 42:17Joe Cronin is up there, he hits him right handed, you know.
- 42:20the first is a foul up and back.
- 42:22Up on top of the first box, and the count on Joe Cronin is strike one.
- 42:28Mermencroft has got another new ball, Gabby Hartnett whips it down to Phil Carey at first, Carey rubs it off a little bit, and then drops it over to Kyle Hubbell.
- 42:37First half of the second inning, one to nothing in favor of the National Leaguers.
- 42:42One man out, and nobody is on.
- 42:44Here's the pitch to Cronin, strike two, swinging.
- 42:51That old blue ball to Kyle Hubbell is working in there beautifully this afternoon. It must be when you strike out four hitters like that.
- 42:59Blue, Carey, Fox, and Simmons.
- 43:01Now he has a count two and nothing on Joe Cronin.
- 43:06One man out, nobody on.
- 43:07the pitch, it's too high, four to one.
- 43:11That was just about the fastest ball that hubbell has tossed in there this afternoon with a count two and nothing.
- 43:18He's a smart pitcher, you know. He whips that fast one in there.
- 43:22Here's the pitch again, two.
- 43:26White three, swinging. He's struck about.
- 43:30Five strikeouts in a row for let's see how the National League.
- 43:42Back to the second inning, the American Leaguers are left back, and we have two men out and nobody on.
- 43:51the benefit of those who have just tuned in, Kyle Hubbell has struck out the last five batters.
- 43:57Here's Phil Dickey, strikes the hole up in front of the first box, and it's strike one.
- 44:02Phil Dickey, back from left-handed.
- 44:09Phil Dickey, you know, is a great hole, clean catcher of the New York Yankees.
- 44:14Ball, that was a hook ball that got away from Hubbell.
- 44:18It was outside and a little bit low, and the count is ball one and strike one.
- 44:23What a ball game we're watching.
- 44:26Ball one and strike one.
- 44:28There's the windup, two out, nobody on.
- 44:32Strike two, ball.
- 44:35That's the ball that Phil Dickey pulled away from, and it broke over the heart of the plate, or it falls straight.
- 44:41And the count now is strike two, ball one.
- 44:45the American Leaguers batting in the second inning, two out, nobody on.
- 44:50Here's a pitch, strike two, and ball one.
- 44:52He's banged it into the base, hit into left field.
- 44:55A base hit into left field, the ball is received by Medwick.
- 44:58He tosses it into Skavitz, Gatcham at second base, and Dickey stops at first.
- 45:04That's the second hit of the afternoon for the American Leaguers.
- 45:08And now, Gresti Gomez, who is in the box for the American Leaguers, comes to the plate.
- 45:19the score, the National Leaguers one, the American Leaguers nothing.
- 45:23It's the first half of the second inning.
- 45:25Two men have been retired, and Phil Dickey is on first.
- 45:28Gomez swings and pulls back all the way down to Phil Curry at first base.
- 45:33Phil Curry picks the bat up and is walking all the way in the home plate.
- 45:37He doesn't throw it back, but he's walking all the way in the home plate.
- 45:41And Curry definitely hands the bat to Gresti Gomez and makes some kind of comment.
- 45:49Yes sir, Phil Curry picks that bat up right from his to Dickey at first base
- 45:53and walks all the way into the batter's box.
- 45:55And standard to Dickey to let go of it.
- 45:57Strike one at the count, two out, Dickey on first pitch.
- 46:00Strike two, he wins.
- 46:02That was a long follow through, a very beautiful golf swing that Gresti Gomez had on display that time.
- 46:09Strike two is the count to go.
- 46:11Two men out and Phil Dickey is on first.
- 46:14Donnie Carrier hanging around home plate.
- 46:17Here's the pitch.
- 46:18Strike three, swinging.
- 46:20Gresti Gomez, the pitcher of the American Leaguers,
- 46:24struck out making his sixth strikeout for the Power Hubbell of the basketball league.
- 46:30the score one to nothing, the segment of the first half of the second inning.
- 46:33Come in for it.
- 46:34the American Leaguers half of the second inning started off with Simmons up.
- 46:38And of course the fans hanging onto the edge of their seats with Simmons at bat.
- 46:42After Hubbell had struck out Ruth and Gehrig in the first inning,
- 46:46so Simmons came up, the count went to one ball and two strikes, one and two on him.
- 46:50And then he swung hard and collected an awful lot of air on the end of his bat.
- 46:54the fourth strikeout for Hubbell.
- 46:55Then Joe Conan came up.
- 46:57the count went at one and two on him and he whiffed with a vicious cut at that ball,
- 47:03missing it, making the fifth man.
- 47:05Then Phil Dickey came up.
- 47:07Sure fire hitter Phil Dickey, a great catcher, and the American League catcher this afternoon.
- 47:12And he wanged the ninth Little Texas Leaguers out into left field just over the shortstop head
- 47:17and not far enough up for Medwick to do anything about it out in left field for a single.
- 47:21Gomez came to bat.
- 47:23Gomez who's had that contrast on with Johnny Broca of the Yankees
- 47:26to see who could get the most hits this season.
- 47:28So far Gomez has had five and he's struck out three straight.
- 47:31So here we go into the National League half, the second inning, and here's Tom Manning to give it to.
- 47:36Wally Burger, right-handed with his first up, he swings at the first ball,
- 47:40hits it at the foul, up and back, strike one.
- 47:43That's the Gomez, you know, is in the box for the American League,
- 47:46here's Phil Dickey behind the bat.
- 47:48We have a moment for those who just tuned in.
- 47:50Gehrig is at first, Gehrig in at second,
- 47:52Bolamic short and Jimmy Fox to be athletic at third.
- 47:57the outfield is Rooks, Simmons, and Manning.
- 48:00Strike two, swinging.
- 48:04Wally Burger, you know, is one of the long-distance hitters of the Master League.
- 48:08Well, as far as that's concerned, everybody out here is a long-distance hitter today.
- 48:12Burger's the first man up for the Master Leagueers and the last half of the second.
- 48:16the pitch, the long spank is foul in left field.
- 48:20the long spank is far high over the pavilion in left field,
- 48:24and the hit is strike two on Wally Burger.
- 48:33So it's one and nothing, you know, in favor of the Master Leagueers,
- 48:35and we tell the Frankie Fishers home run.
- 48:37Frankie Fishers was the first man up for the Master Leagueers in the first inning.
- 48:41Focked it in the upper deck of the right field, stands for Homer.
- 48:44Strike three, Wally Burger, and strike two on swing.
- 48:50That's the second strikeout of the afternoon.
- 48:54Bill Piper is coming up. Bill gets a great ovation from the crowd as he steps to the plate.
- 48:59Bill is well-liked here in New York City, and he's trippy.
- 49:04Bill is a great ballplayer.
- 49:06Bill is the manager of the Master Leagueers today.
- 49:08He's a left-handed hitter, the first pick. By long, a fast ball is outside.
- 49:17Travis Jackson, drop-stop and captain of the Giants, is next.
- 49:21There's a long smash in the center field, but Simmons coming in.
- 49:25Simmons is under it. He has it.
- 49:30Very, very high-price center field.
- 49:32Al Simmons can always usually farm in left field.
- 49:35Or, as you saw, the white top is open center field this afternoon with 90-minutes playing left.
- 49:42Travis Jackson, short-stop of the Giants, a right-hand hitter, is next up.
- 49:50They said last one of them, Jackson, was all warmed up on account of a bad knee,
- 49:54but that knee is plenty down this year, and he's playing a player-of-a-game.
- 49:58Strike, swinging.
- 50:00That was a fast ball just under the skin, but Jackson took a great cut at it.
- 50:06Two out, and nobody on.
- 50:10Strike two, ball.
- 50:12That was a nice curve ball, rather high.
- 50:15Ball bounded out of sticky glove, roll, two feet, four-thirds.
- 50:19Bill retrieves it and toss it back to Gomez, and we're ready to go.
- 50:23Two out, nobody on. Jackson up. Strike two.
- 50:27One-to-nothing in favor of the Master Leaguers.
- 50:30Here's the pitch. Gomez takes an extra long windup this time, and here it is.
- 50:35It's a ball. It's over the plate. the depth is a little bit low,
- 50:38and the count on Travis Jackson is strike two and ball one.
- 50:43Two out, nobody on.
- 50:47And here comes strike three, swinging.
- 50:51That was a slow cut that Jackson took at that.
- 50:54the Master Leaguers in the second inning, no one, no hits, no errors.
- 50:57Boardbomb.
- 50:59Looks like this game is going to settle the argument about which it takes to win ball games.
- 51:03Heavy hitters are great pitchers because the pitchers are tying these heavy-hitting lineups into nops this afternoon.
- 51:09the National League second inning, Gomez first pitching to Berger.
- 51:13Berger came up and went down on three straight balls, all of them siked,
- 51:17and he swung hard at the third one and tore through a lump of the ozone above the plate and got exactly nothing at all.
- 51:23Then Bill Terry came up to the tears of the fans, a very popular player, great first baseman,
- 51:29great manager of the New York Giants, came up and it went to one and nothing on him.
- 51:34A ball and no strikes, and then he walloped a powering high fly.
- 51:38It failed way high up into the center field.
- 51:41Simmons moved in under it and took it nicely for the second out.
- 51:45Then Travis Jackson came to bat.
- 51:48Travis Jackson up, and Gomez had his number two. Jackson went down swinging, retiring the National League here in the second inning.
- 51:56So we come with the score one to nothing in favor of the National League into the third inning with the American League at bat.
- 52:02the National Broadcasting Company bringing it to you.
- 52:04Here's Tom Manning to tell you about the play-by-play here in the third inning.
- 52:07the American League is one-one behind as they come to bat and Charlie Kerringer, the first Tiger second baseman, is again the leadoff man.
- 52:15Time-up Charlie singles to center field, went to second on the center fielder's fumble.
- 52:22First pitch is a foul inside.
- 52:25Ball two.
- 52:28That was a hook ball that went to the outside corner, and the count on Charlie Kerringer, who got them left-handed, is to a nothing.
- 52:38Charlie had almost gone over to Fallerville, Michigan, May 11, 19-3.
- 52:43Right foul.
- 52:45Ball two and strike on.
- 52:48You can all get a picture of Charlie.
- 52:50He's 5'11.5 and 180 pounds.
- 52:53Came to Detroit in 1945 from Toronto.
- 52:56Got a batting average, a grand average of 382 for the year.
- 53:00Got to get the hole in the next one and drive it deep into right field.
- 53:05And it's Marler, goes back and makes that nice running back at the edge of the box and deep right field.
- 53:11Boy, that ball was hit right on the label.
- 53:14Looks like it was going to wait for a moment, but Mike Carter turned it back with a back of the bat and dived off the center back and made a sweet running back for the first out.
- 53:26One down, nobody on.
- 53:29Tide straighter and Bill Terry.
- 53:3111-6 is Fox now having a bit of a conference with Carl Hubbell.
- 53:36Conference is over and Heine-Manu is coming up.
- 53:40Last time up, Heine-Walk.
- 53:43Gets the first ball, puts the crowd around second base way.
- 53:46Flanky brings it up with it.
- 53:47Fox is in query.
- 53:48Manu is out.
- 53:50Two men out, nobody on.
- 53:51Boy, those master leaders are whipping that ball around that in field.
- 53:55What a speed of whiting.
- 53:57And straightly all set up right on their toes this afternoon.
- 54:00Mabou gets the great ovation as he comes up for the second time.
- 54:07Last time up, Baybrews.
- 54:10Look out.
- 54:12the American League is half of the third inning.
- 54:14One run behind, two outs, nobody on, and Baybrews is up.
- 54:19Strike, call.
- 54:22Rather slow curve ball just above the knees and over the heart of the plate.
- 54:28Baybrews decided to wait for another one.
- 54:31A called strike.
- 54:32One to nothing is the count.
- 54:34the fifth ball.
- 54:36That was over, just a little bit too low, and the crowd on Baybrews.
- 54:40Ball one and strike one.
- 54:43the score is one to nothing in favor of the national leaders.
- 54:47First half of the third inning, two outs, nobody on.
- 54:50Hubbell pitching, here it is.
- 54:52It's too low.
- 54:54Ball two and strike one on Baybrews.
- 54:58Luke Gehry is hanging around home plate.
- 55:01Drew is coming up there next to them.
- 55:04Two outs, nobody on.
- 55:07Baybrews, ball two, strike one, the pitch.
- 55:11Oh-ho!
- 55:13Over into the national league is Dugout, which is a long third base,
- 55:16and that evens the count at ball two and strike two.
- 55:23There's a lot of pebble out there on the national league's infield.
- 55:27A lot of baseball players out there, including the MVP managers, Terry Pritz and Traylor.
- 55:33And the captain, Travis Jackson.
- 55:35Two and two, the pitch.
- 55:38Ball three, that one's right, Baybrews away from the plate.
- 55:41It was high inside, and now the count on the base, ball three and strike two.
- 55:52Nobody on base and all two outs.
- 55:54There's the windup, three and two, three and two.
- 55:57Ball four, that was high inside, driving the Baybrews again out of the batter's box,
- 56:02and he walks through Gary coming up.
- 56:06Last time up, Gary struck out.
- 56:13I don't see anybody warming up for the national league as we get.
- 56:16Most possible to Phil's, Gary will allow Hubble to go along a little longer.
- 56:23Gary gets strike one, this is a foul back.
- 56:30Baybrews is on first base, first half of the third inning, two outs.
- 56:38Jimmy Fox is hanging around home plate now.
- 56:42Here's the pitch.
- 56:44Get the hold of it along, smash the right field, open near the wall,
- 56:47Tyler's over close to the wall and makes the catch, and that's all.
- 56:50That was two mighty drives that inning by Scherringer and Gary,
- 56:55but it's all over for the American Leagueers in the first half of the third.
- 56:58What's the score for?
- 57:00Well, if Gary gets pulled around just a little harder on that one,
- 57:03the score, there would have been two runs in that inning because the Baybrews down on first,
- 57:08Gary came up and smashed that ball hard right on the old smuzzle out on the right field.
- 57:14If he had pulled it around just about 25 feet, he would have sailed over that low barrier into those right field turns.
- 57:19But, Phil, well, that's what's between innings that the Mets are built on.
- 57:24the first was the first man up, the Adolf Mams, the Americans in the third,
- 57:28and he banged a long hard hit flat way out to the full bend in right field,
- 57:32but Kyler was out there with a crack in the bat and took it on the run for a nice running catch on the first out.
- 57:38Then Manouche came up. Manouche banged one, a draft cutter, down to Frisch on second.
- 57:42He was out on a fast play, Frisch to Terry, and two men were gone.
- 57:45the Baybs came up, two outs, nobody on.
- 57:48Count went to three and two on him, and then he got a walk.
- 57:51Derek came up and smacked that long one out into right field, but Kyler took that one right.
- 57:55This right field is hard to measure here. the angles are peculiar on it.
- 57:58Here we go into the National League share, the third inning now,
- 58:01and the batter is coming into the box, and here's Dom Manning.
- 58:04Gabby Hartnett, he catches with today's game, catches for the Chicago Cubs right-hand hitter,
- 58:09it's first up, and on the first pitch from Gomez, he follows it up on the roof in back of home plate.
- 58:16And the count on Gabby Hartnett is strike one.
- 58:20Kyle Hubbell, the next hitter, has the ground ball over the pitch,
- 58:23he's had down short corner and in fast, has it, whips it to Gary, and Hartnett is out.
- 58:29That was a fast play by Joe Cronin, the shortstop of a lazy hopper just out of Gomez's league.
- 58:35Now we have one man out in the National League half of the third inning.
- 58:46He's going to have a pitch hitter for Kyle Hubbell.
- 58:50Dilly Herman, a right-hand hitter, fast for Kyle Hubbell.
- 58:56Hubbell has picked his three innings and is through for the day.
- 59:00If the first ball takes, the high fly out in the short left field,
- 59:04Cohen going back, Van Utrend, Cohen there's under it, and has it,
- 59:08for the out.
- 59:12That was the high fly, Van Utrend and Cohen both going after it.
- 59:15Now we have two men out and nobody out.
- 59:20Dilly Herman hitting the first ball, pitch through short left field,
- 59:23where it was taken by Joe Cronin.
- 59:28Much more we have at the top of the National League is batting order coming up,
- 59:32Frankie Fritz, who is responsible for the National League's advantage of one run.
- 59:37He smacked that home run in the first inning, high into the upper deck of the right field stand.
- 59:43Ball one, that was a driving third ball.
- 59:48That was over but just a little bit too high.
- 59:51At the top of Frankie Fritz is right one, or ball one rather.
- 59:55Ball two, a third ball is high outside and the count is two and nothing.
- 1:00:05Two and nothing on Frankie Fritz, the manager of the St. Louis Garbage.
- 1:00:10At the high foul, down toward first base,
- 1:00:13Gehrig is going back fast over to the stand,
- 1:00:16but gets a little too deep into the boxers and back to first base and into strike.
- 1:00:23Gehrig is certainly a fighting ball player.
- 1:00:25He dashed over to that one, never looked up until he got his hand on the little bowler
- 1:00:29in front of the boxers and looked up,
- 1:00:31but the ball is in the boxers a little too deep and the count on Frankie Fritz,
- 1:00:36a ball two and strike one.
- 1:00:43Last half of the third inning, you know, strike two, ball two and strike two.
- 1:00:57Two and two, two outs, nobody on.
- 1:01:00Ball three, that was a third ball outside
- 1:01:04and now the count on Frankie Fritz is ball three and strike two.
- 1:01:09the fans have settled down for just a moment now with that great excitement
- 1:01:12that we had in the first inning.
- 1:01:17It's a ball low outside and Frankie Fritz whacks.
- 1:01:25Well, Meg had Fritz in the hole that time with a count of two and two,
- 1:01:29but wasn't able to get the other two over.
- 1:01:31Missed the corner with that third ball,
- 1:01:34but the other one was plenty low and outside and Fritz is on first,
- 1:01:38two outs and Pye Traynor is up.
- 1:01:44Pye gets that nickname when he's a kid, he was always asking for Pye.
- 1:01:50Ball one, that was a change of pace offering, a little bit high at inside.
- 1:01:57Maxley gets batting on the last half of the third, two outs, Fritz on first.
- 1:02:00That's a long furrow down the right field and it's a strike.
- 1:02:06That was a hard smash down in the right field.
- 1:02:08the fans all stood up as it left the bat, but it was followed by 15 or 20 yards.
- 1:02:15Ball one and strike one.
- 1:02:18Pye Traynor is up.
- 1:02:20Manager and third baseman of the Pittsburgh Pilots.
- 1:02:24Foul up and back.
- 1:02:28Strike two and ball one.
- 1:02:30That ball was about four head high.
- 1:02:35Pye Traynor liked him high and he fouls right into that one,
- 1:02:37but it was a foul back and the counter strike two and ball one.
- 1:02:44Last half of the third inning, Maxley Leaguers won, American Leaguers nothing.
- 1:02:48We have two outs, Frankie Fritz is on first base.
- 1:02:51Let's-de-go manager is in the box and the count on Pye Traynor is strike two and ball one.
- 1:02:57Here it is.
- 1:02:59It's a ground ball through the center of the infield out in the center field.
- 1:03:02Al Simmons comes up with it and he returns the ball to Farnham at second base while Frankie Fritz holds up at third.
- 1:03:10Frankie Fritz keeps his third base standing up.
- 1:03:12A play test for Pye Traynor.
- 1:03:15That was a ground ball through the center of the infield and it was received by Al Simmons in center field.
- 1:03:23Now we have Joey Medwick.
- 1:03:25Joey Medwick in the stainless part coming up.
- 1:03:36A ball low inside.
- 1:03:39Runners on first and third.
- 1:03:40You know, last half of the third inning, two men out.
- 1:03:46Last time up, Medwick's stuck out.
- 1:03:49Ball back and that evens the count of ball one and strike one.
- 1:03:57Here's the picture, last half of the third inning.
- 1:03:59the Master League is allowed in front by the score of one to nothing.
- 1:04:02Pye Traynor is on first.
- 1:04:04Frankie Fritz is on third.
- 1:04:06Joe Medwick is up.
- 1:04:08It's a holdout with a long pass.
- 1:04:10Going, going, going.
- 1:04:11Hit of the upper deck.
- 1:04:12Off the left field stands for a home run.
- 1:04:15Frankie Fritz off to the plate.
- 1:04:18Pye Traynor here's Browning-Burke going in.
- 1:04:21And here comes Joey Medwick.
- 1:04:23the fans are all standing up giving Medwick a great ovation.
- 1:04:26A long home run into the upper deck.
- 1:04:29Off the left field stands for a home run.
- 1:04:32the Master League are out in front by the score of one to nothing.
- 1:04:36Listen to that crowd for a moment.
- 1:04:53the fans are coming over close to it and the wind is going the ball over against the trees.
- 1:05:06And the count of Jimmy Fox's ball trees and strike two.
- 1:05:11There's something spooky about those home runs this afternoon.
- 1:05:14the one by Frankie Fritz in the first inning and by Joe Medwick in the third.
- 1:05:18Those balls were hit right on the label and they sailed not into the lower deck,
- 1:05:23but both of them were high into the upper deck.
- 1:05:28Jimmy Fox first bat up on the fourth for the American Leagueers.
- 1:05:31Hit that ground ball down short.
- 1:05:33About half a jack to the basket, but to the carry and Fox is out.
- 1:05:37With the count balls being strike two.
- 1:05:39Fox to the ground ball down short.
- 1:05:41Stopped way into the bat and an asking hop to Jack to the cimbit.
- 1:05:45He's got a little bit of a hard at the tip of his tap and then flips it over to Bill Terry and Fox is out.
- 1:05:51One down.
- 1:05:53Al Simmons is up.
- 1:05:55Al Simmons is on the playing center field this afternoon.
- 1:06:00Al is one of the greatest right-hand hitters of all time.
- 1:06:06Hit the ball.
- 1:06:09That was over the heart of the plate, but just a little bit low.
- 1:06:12the count on Al Simmons is ball one.
- 1:06:15First half of the fourth inning, you know, one out, nobody on.
- 1:06:17Four to nothing in favor of the National Leagueers.
- 1:06:19Four to nothing.
- 1:06:20As a high foul over the stands and back of the plate.
- 1:06:23And the count is ball one and it's strike one.
- 1:06:30the new ball is tossed up.
- 1:06:32Count Warnock, you know, is much lower.
- 1:06:35That does foul Hubble.
- 1:06:37Power, that's the goal match.
- 1:06:41the count on Al Simmons now is ball one and strike one.
- 1:06:45As the long, fast going, going up against the left field,
- 1:06:51Beecher and Simmons destroying the second base.
- 1:06:53the ball is panned off the wall into the hands of Medwick.
- 1:06:55Medwick tipped the ball into Jackson and it was a two-base ball for Al Simmons.
- 1:06:59That ball was within a yard and so of going deep into the left center field of Beecher.
- 1:07:05And that's plenty high out there, about 25 feet high.
- 1:07:08That was a two-base hit that anybody qualifies.
- 1:07:13That's the first exit base hit of the afternoon for the National Leagueers.
- 1:07:17Now they're carrying in the first man up on the ball,
- 1:07:19James Singleton is the second on the center field as well.
- 1:07:22Now we have one man out, Al Simmons on second base and Joe Fallon is up.
- 1:07:28Joe Fallon, shortstop and manager of the American Leagueers this afternoon,
- 1:07:33as well as being manager of the Washington Center Base.
- 1:07:36the first six for Wamakee.
- 1:07:38And with that down left field, with the base hit,
- 1:07:41south to inside about a foot inside, there's a ball for Medwick who's Jackson.
- 1:07:45Fallon was halfway down a second, but James was flying and went back to first.
- 1:07:49And so Al Simmons was down the third base, up right on going.
- 1:07:56If anybody's warming up, they must be.
- 1:08:00Farther, they are way down at center field.
- 1:08:07All right, one of the National Leagueers warming up.
- 1:08:09Only have two men out in the first half of the fourth inning.
- 1:08:12Joe Fallon is on first and Earl Averill is batting for Lexington Gohmans.
- 1:08:18Averill, you know, hits them left-handed.
- 1:08:24Fallon Wamakee, right-hander is in the box, the pitch. Fallon, a back ball is high inside.
- 1:08:30One to nothing is the count.
- 1:08:37It's funny, Joe Fallon is a sense of steel.
- 1:08:39Now Averill will be declared out. He really wouldn't be in the ball game officially.
- 1:08:44Ball one is the count on Averill.
- 1:08:48Averill is a pitch. It's too low. Ball two.
- 1:08:55Wamakee, right-hander, big ball, right-hander, out there in the box for the National Leagueers having the plate.
- 1:09:02Fallon Hubbell.
- 1:09:08He's on the rubber again, ready to face Averill with a count two and up in the pitch.
- 1:09:13Ball three, a back ball is too low.
- 1:09:16Charlie Gilling is hanging around home plate.
- 1:09:21Three and nothing is the count on Averill.
- 1:09:28Working that ball low outside for Earl.
- 1:09:36Three and nothing is the count. Two outs, Fallon is on first.
- 1:09:39It is fake foul. Ball three and fake one.
- 1:09:46That was a burning fast foul right down the old alley, felt high.
- 1:09:50Three and one it is.
- 1:09:53Fallon is on first, two men out, first half of the fourth.
- 1:09:56the pitch.
- 1:09:57Wings into ball, fast going, going, going, deep into right field.
- 1:10:02And it turns off, defense out there, Averill is down and second, Fallon is down and third. Here's the throw, it's closest, 35 he's safe.
- 1:10:09A mighty three base hit for Earl Averill.
- 1:10:12And Fallon crosses the plate.
- 1:10:15the National Leagueers four, the American Leagueers two.
- 1:10:19Earl Averill is on the field of the Cleveland Indians with that count, ball three and fake one.
- 1:10:24He took a toehold on that dribble coming down the old alley and forward and he hit it.
- 1:10:28He hit it and he hit it to the wall.
- 1:10:33That was beautiful to watch.
- 1:10:35That ball was relayed from Tyler to Berger in third base.
- 1:10:40Earl Averill with a beautiful hook drive beating the throw.
- 1:10:43Harold Jackson down there raising net at third base.
- 1:10:48Whistling and what have you.
- 1:10:50Four to two in favor of the National Leagueers.
- 1:10:52Two outs, Averill on third.
- 1:10:54Charlie Kerringer with the Detroit Tigers is up a left hand batter.
- 1:10:58One single out of two hooks to the plate.
- 1:11:02the pitch, hit the ball high inside.
- 1:11:08Mighty Manu is just hanging around.
- 1:11:12Well, this may develop into a slug first before it's all over, eh?
- 1:11:16Here's the pitch.
- 1:11:18This is like a fast ball right in there and the count on Charlie Kerringer, ball one and fake one.
- 1:11:26Charlie Kerringer, you know, is one of the most likable ball players in the major leagues.
- 1:11:31Never has a bad word to say about anybody.
- 1:11:35Ball one and fake one is his count.
- 1:11:38Ball two, that was a curve ball that missed the outside corner to a left hand sticker
- 1:11:43and the count is ball two and fake one.
- 1:11:47Here's half of the fourth inning to score the National Leagueers four, American Leagueers two.
- 1:11:54Two men out, Averill on third, ball two and fake one and there it is.
- 1:11:58Ball three, ball outside and the count is three and one.
- 1:12:02Mighty Manu just hanging around home plate, gets up now and Moses Gauze is down and waves that bat a few times.
- 1:12:10Gabby Hartnett walks out to have a bit of a conference with his battering mate, Lon Warnocky.
- 1:12:19You know, this battering that we have in the mouth of the National Leagueers represents the century of progress
- 1:12:25and the city of Chicago in a big way.
- 1:12:29Gabby Hartnett, a fine catcher and Lon Warnocky, a very, very fine right hand pitcher.
- 1:12:37First half of the fourth inning, two out, Averill on third, Geringer up ball three, strike one, the pick.
- 1:12:43Hips too wide and Geringer walks, Charlie Geringer walks, swinging highly Manu.

- 1:13:12Mighty Manu is up, a left hand batter with Lon Warnocky 50.
- 1:13:15Here it is, strike one.
- 1:13:18He takes a terrific cut and misses.
- 1:13:25Strike one is the count on Mighty Manu.
- 1:13:27Anything can happen now, everybody on the edge of their seats here waiting for it.
- 1:13:31Strike one, the pick.
- 1:13:33It's a very high infield fly over in foul territory now with Piper in the sun waiting for it,
- 1:13:39feeling his high de-hazard.
- 1:13:41That's all for the American Leaguers in the fourth inning.

- 1:13:51Come in for it.
- 1:13:54Warnocky came in to pick for the National League in the American League half of the fourth inning
- 1:13:59and he first had to face Fox who came in the up and the count went to three and two and then he banged a hard grass cutter down to Travis Jackson
- 1:14:06who fielded it very fast out of the cross-exterior and got it to the back just about two feet ahead of the runner.
- 1:14:11Then came up, Simmons banged that ball hard high and far way up the left field stand stand
- 1:14:19and just missed clearing by about one yard the barrier above the lower deck.
- 1:14:24He got a two-bagger on it.
- 1:14:26So the man on base, one out and one on and Soren at that.
- 1:14:30Soren smacked one to left field just about two feet in side the left field foul line,
- 1:14:34soren Simmons a thing over Joe Soren.
- 1:14:36Dickie up and he bowled to the upper deck at the long strike and then went down on call strike.
- 1:14:42Averill came up, banged that ball about 260 yards into right field.

- 1:14:52A three-bagger scoring corner and brings the score up to four to two.
- 1:14:56Gerriger came up and walked, then managed to pass a foul, a very high, powering high foul.
- 1:15:01Slater moved over from third base and took it for the third out.
- 1:15:05Two runs in in that inning on Lon Warnocky.
- 1:15:10He hit Simmons, Cronin, and Averill.

- 1:15:33Wally Berger is first up with Charlie Ruffing picking.

- 1:16:24the umpire has evaded the game for a moment to brush off home plate.
- 1:16:28Wally fell down.
- 1:16:30He picked all the dirt out of the platter and now it's all washed up and ready for another deal.
- 1:16:35Strike two and foul one.
- 1:16:37Terry, the high fly to the infield.
- 1:16:41It's going foul with Fox under it.
- 1:16:44Fox has it.

- 1:16:48Fox has his very bright sun there above a third base.
- 1:16:53Jimmy Fox is there with his glove, feeling sun from his eyes,
- 1:16:57and staggered into foul third, Terry, and juggled the ball for a moment,
- 1:17:01but he hung out with him and that's what counts.
- 1:17:03One man off, nobody on.
- 1:17:04Bill Terry is up.
- 1:17:06Terry, you know, hits him left hand.

- 1:18:03Last half of the fourth inning, one out, nobody on.
- 1:18:08Red Ruppey, one of the New York Yankees, the right hander pitching.

- 1:21:27Here it is, hit the ball, running high and now it's three and two.
- 1:21:35One man out, Terry on first.
- 1:21:37As you can see now he's halfway to second base.
- 1:21:40He'll always do that of course with one out.
- 1:21:44That's three and two on Jackson.
- 1:21:48He goes down, he swings at the very high fly, short left center field, Abel coming in fast, Abel is under it, he has it.
- 1:21:56Came a long way for that one.
- 1:21:58Now he has two men out.
- 1:22:00Bill Kelly was off with roughing both of them at times.
- 1:22:03All the way down to second base and had to hurry back to first.
- 1:22:08Now we have Gabby Hartnett coming up.
- 1:22:10Two men out.
- 1:22:15Fred Ruffing of the New York Yankees, the right-hander is in the box.

- 1:22:34Last count of the fourth inning to score, National League is four, the American League is two.
- 1:22:38Two men out, Bill Kelly on first.
- 1:22:40Here it is, Spike two swinging.
- 1:22:44Fred Ruffing has 20th speed this afternoon.
- 1:22:47the two strikes to Gabby Hartnett were burning soft balls about letter high.
- 1:22:52Hartnett swinging very hard at both of them.
- 1:22:55Here it is, he waits one, and the count is two and one.
- 1:23:01Spike two and ball one.
- 1:23:05Ruffing looks over to first base, then takes a long stretch.
- 1:23:09Here it is, he waits another one, it's too high.
- 1:23:12the second-to-last count on Gabby Hartnett is two and two.
- 1:23:19the National Broadcasting Company is swinging in this game from the forward round in New York.
- 1:23:27Now the two and two of ground ball down third base with Popkasset to throw.
- 1:23:32Beautiful throw, letter high to Kerrigan, Gabby Hartnett is out.
- 1:23:35the ball for the National Leaguers in the fourth inning and the score, National Leaguers four, American Leaguers two.
- 1:23:42As we get ready to go into the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:23:45Give it up for it.
- 1:23:46And in this most colorful of all baseball games, these colorful players,
- 1:23:50landing every spot on the diamond and every name in the batting order,
- 1:23:56sparkling with the ability which they've shown and demonstrated and tied it up in the record books.
- 1:24:01Jackson came into pitch for the American League as the National Leaguers came up in the fourth.
- 1:24:06And Ruffing had Berger to face first.
- 1:24:09Berger fouls very high and Popkasset just back of third measured it,
- 1:24:13having to warm the sun out of his eyes with the big miss as it came down.
- 1:24:17He almost misjudged it, had to leap back about a foot as it came down into his glove and it was one out.
- 1:24:22Terry up and Terry got a ringing single in left field, went down to first.
- 1:24:27Jackson came up, had a lot of fouls and then banged one out the center field where Earl Averill took care of that.
- 1:24:33Then Hartnett at bat threw out one arm.
- 1:24:36He banged one heart down to third where Popkasset took it.
- 1:24:39John McCloss to Gehrig, retiring the National League in the fourth.
- 1:24:42And the score is four for the National Leaguers and two for the American Leaguers.
- 1:24:45the National Broadcocks and Company is bringing this to you,
- 1:24:48the Polos round as we go into the fifth inning.
- 1:24:50Here's Tom Manning to give you the play by Braden Gipson.
- 1:24:53Bob Larnaking in offense, double-cubs is the pitcher. Baybose is up.
- 1:24:57the first pitch to the Bay.
- 1:24:59It's a strike.
- 1:25:00the Bay is blown away from home plate and now he's talking to the umpire.
- 1:25:04But they guard with this strike.
- 1:25:09Baybose looked out the first time up and walked in the third inning.
- 1:25:13Strike one on the Bay.
- 1:25:15the pitcher.
- 1:25:16Take two, ball.
- 1:25:18Again, Baybose, blown away from the plate and the crowd is two and nothing.
- 1:25:24Baybose leaning on his bat now about eight or ten feet away from home plate
- 1:25:30and is talking with the umpire.
- 1:25:32And the crowd is two and nothing at all.
- 1:25:34the Baybose the first man up in the fifth inning.
- 1:25:43Blue Gage, Columbia Blue coming up next.
- 1:25:47Two and nothing on the Bay the fifth.
- 1:25:50Ball inside.
- 1:25:54Down on Baybose now, strike two and ball one.
- 1:25:58the umpire is waiting for a moment while he gets off into the whiff room
- 1:26:01and presses off home plate.
- 1:26:09Twenty-two to fifty and oh. Strike two and ball one.
- 1:26:11Here it is.
- 1:26:12Ball two.
- 1:26:13the back ball is high inside.
- 1:26:15Baybose tucked away from home plate and the crowd is two and two.
- 1:26:25Ball two and strike two on the Bay.
- 1:26:27First man up for the American Leagues in the fifth inning.
- 1:26:30Ball three.
- 1:26:33That was a fast start over the plate to just a little bit low.
- 1:26:40the heavy heart bet, but perhaps that was over, but the count is three and two.
- 1:26:50Al Stratus walked in there now holding up his hand, declaring time for a moment,
- 1:26:54yelling for time while he's asking the umpire to take a look at that ball.
- 1:27:02Ball was all right so Al Stratus getting the front steer,
- 1:27:06but he didn't take it, he's tipping his hat to the Bay.
- 1:27:11Three and two is the count on Baybose.
- 1:27:12First man up for the American Leagues in the fifth inning.
- 1:27:16Here's the windup.
- 1:27:17Three and two to pitch.
- 1:27:19Hit the ball at two-one.
- 1:27:20Baybose fast.
- 1:27:25With a count of three and two, Baybose to the line, four-off drive,
- 1:27:28and he's now 30-pound first base and Larabee to Gary of Columbia is next up.
- 1:27:38Here I see a foul on by Jimmy Fox.
- 1:27:44And the lead team remains the same, infield, Lee, Perry, Fritz, Jackson and Swainer.
- 1:27:53On warning, here's Adam Knox now having to replace Tom Hubbell who makes three great innings.
- 1:27:58All ready to go now, ready to work on Gary.
- 1:28:01the first pitch, hit low, outside, ball run.
- 1:28:05Gary, that's not old Scalile on the plate.
- 1:28:09So he's just a big fellow.
- 1:28:14Well that is a count here.
- 1:28:15Fast ball to the foul side, ball to the plate, and the count on Gary, here's foul two.
- 1:28:22First half of the first inning, National League is just two runs ahead, four to two.
- 1:28:31Robert Johnson is coaching the first base, Al Jackson serves.
- 1:28:34the pitch to Gary with a count of two and nothing.
- 1:28:37He takes almost a half swing,
- 1:28:39whaps the umpire foul to the foul on the count of three and nothing.
- 1:28:43the players being referred now to umpire stack, out here second base.
- 1:28:49Maggie Fritz is talking with stack as is Ty Fraynor.
- 1:28:53That's a clean with the arbitrator behind the plate and the count of three and nothing.
- 1:29:00Gary just almost a half swing of that ball.
- 1:29:06Three and nothing, they lose on first, nobody else but Fritz.
- 1:29:09Fakes foul.
- 1:29:15That was a fast ball right in there.
- 1:29:17Lonnie Warnock, he's talking to them as much as he can today.
- 1:29:19Who's afraid of you? Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?
- 1:29:22Now it's three and one.
- 1:29:24the pitch to high fly a bit of a stand and light for the foul.
- 1:29:32That was far funny.
- 1:29:34And the count on Luke Gary gets three and two.
- 1:29:37Jimmy Fox is coming up next.
- 1:29:39Kermit crosses out a new ball.
- 1:29:42Hyman flips it down to Ty Fraynor.
- 1:29:44Ty takes his glove off.
- 1:29:46Gives it a bit of a massage and then tosses it over to Lon Warnock.
- 1:29:53Warnock gives a right hand set to the count of three and two on Luke Gary with Babe Ruth on first.
- 1:29:58Result of a base on balls, nobody else.
- 1:30:01Here it is.
- 1:30:04It's two and Gary walks.
- 1:30:08With the count of three and two, Warnock set a fast ball down the alley.
- 1:30:13But it was glory and now we have Gary on first.
- 1:30:17Babe Ruth on second.
- 1:30:19And manager Bill and Terry, Ty Fraynor, Mikey Fritz, Jackson and Hartnett all walking out to the pitchers' top for a conference with Lon Warnock.
- 1:30:30Lonock is by three and going out of the box.
- 1:30:37Jeff Lon Warnock is walking slowly, nonchalantly over toward the not-so-regious dugout, which is located along the first baseline.
- 1:30:4950 Gene is running down the center field of both ends to warm up.
- 1:30:56So we'll probably have Al Mungo.
- 1:31:01That's coming in.
- 1:31:02That's not official, is Jeff?
- 1:31:06Still a bit of a conference down there.
- 1:31:08So in the front of it, many friends have just tuned in.
- 1:31:11Let us run over some of the highlights of the play.
- 1:31:14You know, it's a long way down there to the full fence in center field here at the Polar Bound in New York City.
- 1:31:20To be exact, it's 455 feet.
- 1:31:24In the very first inning, the started getting a first-step pass, single pass, break up break, and took second on the center field.
- 1:31:32the first-step pass was a double-steel, but right about east-west.
- 1:31:37Gary got that.
- 1:31:38When Gary got a cover three and two, Gary threw him in with the double-steel when Gary struck out.
- 1:31:45the second-step pass was right over there for the not-so-regious because Jimmy Foxx, the great right-hand, hit him in the stomach.
- 1:31:51He was hit in the stomach with a double-steadle, and with the interception of his pennies on the end of the way, ran in and then strapped him on the back, so in that he could shoot him.
- 1:32:02the second-step pass was right about east-west, Gary got that.
- 1:32:06the second-step pass was really touching baseball.
- 1:32:10the National Leaguers half of the first break, left the hip break, left the rim of the row, headed south.
- 1:32:21One of them left the ball, high into the upper deck, over the 395-foot line, and right field.
- 1:32:24That's quite a crowd here at the Polar Con.
- 1:32:26Four to nothing. Finally in the National Leaguers half of the third inning, they jumped three runs across the plate, showing Medlich coming up with two on, slapped one into the upper deck, and the left field forfeited for a homer, putting the National Leaguers out in front.
- 1:32:40Four to nothing. But the American Leaguers came back and scored two runs in the fourth inning.
- 1:32:45Leslie Gomez started for the American Leaguers, and he hit three in.
- 1:32:49He was replaced by Charlie Ruffing, also of the New York Yankees.
- 1:32:52the great Carl Hubbell, great in speed he is. After watching him in the first game of that World Series last ball, then watching him again this afternoon, striking out those boys, he struck out the six men in three innings.
- 1:33:04That's a lot of strikeouts with players like this in the game. He certainly is a great pitcher. Make no mistake about it.
- 1:33:13Bob Waterkin came on. the American Leaguers scored two runs in the fourth inning, and now as we earn the fifth inning with runners on first and second, nobody out. Two runs behind.
- 1:33:23Rueb is on second. Gerrig is on first, and Jimmy Fox, the right-hander, is coming up.
- 1:33:32Dan Mungo, M-U-N-G-O. Mungo is the new National Leaguers pitcher. He's a right-hander.
- 1:33:39Fox hits the first ball, hits a long drive into right centerfield, and the base hits.
- 1:33:43They move to pounding third base. Here's the throw.
- 1:33:46Gerrig bounce, second, coming to third. Gerrig bounce, third, the throw. But Gerrig goes back to third base.
- 1:33:51They move across the plate, and Fox drops that first. A single for Jimmy Fox, and a long single to the first.
- 1:33:58the right centerfield. the score, the National Leaguers four, the American Leaguers three.
- 1:34:04Now we have Fox on first base. Gerrig on third base. Al Simmons is coming up.
- 1:34:15That was a low line fast deep into right centerfield. Nice feeling out there by Wally Berger, too.
- 1:34:23Now we have Al Simmons, another right-hander, coming up. Mungo, you know, is the National Leaguers pitcher.
- 1:34:29Here it is. Ball one. A fast ball is too low.
- 1:34:34What if the ball came again now? For a while, Aaron McDonough, a bad for the American Leaguers, with a score of four to nothing.
- 1:34:40Two runs last inning, they have one man. McDonough is on first and third, and nobody else.
- 1:34:46Al Simmons is up. Ball one. A down ball. Down he keeps. George Gepson comes up with a pitch.
- 1:34:52Oh, the second is a bit high. He pulls Frankie Pritz off the bag. Gerrig forces the play, and the score is five-four.
- 1:35:03the official ruling, I cannot believe, will be a mirror. It is scored at the hip, correct.
- 1:35:08That was the ground ball between Traynor and Jackson. Jackson went a bit deep, just far to his right, and he bagged the ball.
- 1:35:15He went off balance. He threw the second base, and Frankie Pritz had to leap into the air to spare the ball.
- 1:35:22But we believe that Jimmy Foxx will have beaten the score, and so it is scored as a base hit for Al Simmons.
- 1:35:30Score is four-four, you know, and Manning is good. Coleman, a right-hander, is coming up.
- 1:35:38Hunter is on first and second. Nobody else. Coleman attempts to bump into Pop Fier. Oh, it's a full-back, and what a catch he makes.
- 1:35:45That's beautiful catch. Joe Coleman attempts to stop the fight, and he pops the fireball up, and Javi Harkness rips off his mask,
- 1:35:54and went back and stumbling, took the ball on the edge of his throat, had it finally rolled into the center,
- 1:36:00and Javi gagged and striked it tomorrow, but was able to hang on to it for the first out.
- 1:36:05the letters were unable to advance, so we have Al Simmons on first, Jimmy Foxx on second.
- 1:36:11One man out, hand-tatcher, Phil Zickey of the New York Jankies coming up.
- 1:36:16What a ball game. What catchers, what plays, what plays.
- 1:36:22Here it is, a ball outside. That was a burning fastball that was outside.
- 1:36:29Up right up there, ready to hit. One and nothing is the count. One man out in the fifth inning.
- 1:36:37the pitch hits too low inside, and the count on Phil Zickey is ball two.
- 1:36:46That familiar whistle of Al's jack is ringing through the polo ground.
- 1:36:51Boy, how he can whistle when he's coaching there at third base.
- 1:36:54the count on Phil Zickey, ball two, the pitch hits outside, ball three.
- 1:37:02Ball three is the count.
- 1:37:07Earl Averill coming up next.
- 1:37:10That means that the pitcher will hit in Heidi Manish's spot, second.
- 1:37:16Strike called.
- 1:37:18Mungo aimed that one right down the alley so high. And now the count on Phil Zickey, a left-hand batter, ball three, strike one.

- 1:39:34He steps in there as a substitute batter in the fourth inning and smacks out a long triple.
- 1:39:39And coming up here now in the fifth inning with a bag loaded and with a count two and nothing,
- 1:39:45the old triple came down the alley and he smacked it right between the eyes
- 1:39:49and sailed it down the right field ball line for two bases.
- 1:39:53And now sending Foxx and Simmons across the plate and putting the American League team out and struck by the score of 64.

- 1:40:27the count is ball two, ball three.
- 1:40:31the bases will again be loaded.

- 1:44:00May Bruce is still running with the reference fair.
- 1:44:02Now that was a ball that was right on the line.

- 1:44:57Come in fourth bar.
- 1:44:59Here's a fast review of that hot fifth inning
- 1:45:01and what a hot fifth inning it was.
- 1:45:03Bruce up and back to face Warnocky and he won't.
- 1:45:05Kerring comes up and he won't.
- 1:45:07Fungo is setting to replace Warnocky.

- 1:45:26It was scored as a hit for Simmons.
- 1:45:28Thorn came up and bowled out to Hartman.
- 1:45:30Dickey at bat walks filling the bag and Avril came up,
- 1:45:32doubles the right field, scoring Simmons and Fox.
- 1:45:34Then Geirger came to bat, walks loading the bases,
- 1:45:36roughing game up and a nice one, a huck when they left field,
- 1:45:39scoring Avril and Dickey.
- 1:45:41Bruce at bat, two on and one out.
- 1:45:43He smacks one nice down the first baseline to Bill Terry.
- 1:45:46Bill Terry took it just about two feet off the bag,
- 1:45:48back in the bag and kept on it to Dave Balb-Terry on assist.
- 1:45:52Then Kerring came up to bat and took three terrific swings
- 1:45:55at the ball and failed to connect with what Mungo had on it,
- 1:45:59retiring the side.
- 1:46:00Six runs, four hits and no errors,
- 1:46:02taking the score of the American League East
- 1:46:04and the National League Four.
- 1:46:06That's the score of the American League leading by four runs
- 1:46:09as we go into the National League half.
- 1:46:11the fifth inning, National Broadcasting Company
- 1:46:14bringing us to this play-by-play account
- 1:46:16of the Buffalo Ground in New York,
- 1:46:18a great all-star game between the stars of the American League
- 1:46:21and the stars of the National League
- 1:46:23for the old ballplayers who need their help now that these stars
- 1:46:26can get under them while they're in there playing great baseball,
- 1:46:29great baseball out here before some 60,000 fans
- 1:46:32who really love to come out here and see their favorites perform.
- 1:46:35As we said once before, it's a matter of seeing these ball clubs
- 1:46:38and I think there's nightmares.
- 1:46:40It proves to be when one after the other,
- 1:46:43they came up some up there, they're afraid to walk this way because then,
- 1:46:46look what you've got coming.
- 1:46:47Why, even when they walk to get to Robbie,
- 1:46:49the batting captain has packed out that ball into left field for a single.
- 1:46:53He's no longer in his zone without the National League
- 1:46:56at the State Half of New York City
- 1:46:59with the batting order coming up in this manner.
- 1:47:04We have Pepper Munch coming in to that.
- 1:47:08I believe he's going to be first.
- 1:47:09He's walking up that canyon back to the line
- 1:47:11while they're warming up there in the box.
- 1:47:14the American League pitcher is taking plays out there.
- 1:47:16Yes, sir, I believe there's a change in pitchers at this time.
- 1:47:20Or is it still the big red down there?
- 1:47:22It's still red ruffing down there in the box,
- 1:47:25pitching to Phil Dickey.
- 1:47:32Phil Dickey has been doing yeoman service in this baseball game.
- 1:47:35He's down there now taking ruffing.
- 1:47:37As Martin, the great hero of the 1931 World Series,
- 1:47:46is down there swinging his bat to get himself in shape
- 1:47:49to face the pitching of the big red, which isn't any easy thing to do.
- 1:47:54the old argument about whether the hitters will win the game
- 1:47:57or whether the pitchers will win the game
- 1:47:59has been turned inside out and then back again here this afternoon.
- 1:48:03In the first three innings when Hubbell had it on the American League batters
- 1:48:07and then here in the fourth and fifth when Warnocky and Mungo
- 1:48:14have been clapped pretty freely for six runs.
- 1:48:18Six runs in the fourth, eight runs in the fourth and fifth,
- 1:48:22two in the fourth, and six in the fifth.
- 1:48:27Two in the fourth and six in the fifth.
- 1:48:28That was the number that came in.
- 1:48:30There's some sort of a conference going on down here for a moment.
- 1:48:33the umpires have walked off the field and the boys in blue,
- 1:48:36two of them have come back on.
- 1:48:37I believe Rick Owens and George Majority have walked back in.
- 1:48:41the American League umpires were Charlie Furman and Dolly Stott.
- 1:48:45the National League umpires are off at the moment.
- 1:48:47We couldn't tell you because they disappeared from the diamond.
- 1:48:50And now, Steppen Martin has picked up two bats.
- 1:48:53He hasn't really thought he was going to get to step up a moment ago.
- 1:48:55He had dropped one of them, but he has two of them now,
- 1:48:58and he's keeping them high and mighty just like you do the night.
- 1:49:01He's letting it swing back over his shoulder, come down, tap his leg,
- 1:49:04and then back again.
- 1:49:07Down here for the moment in front of the plate is McKechnie,
- 1:49:11one of the coaches this afternoon.
- 1:49:13What a coaching staff we have and what a number of managers we have
- 1:49:16in this National League team of all styles who are out there on the diamond.
- 1:49:22Bill McKechnie is standing there talking to George Majority for the moment,
- 1:49:25while Zapping has drawn back to tossing him to Bill Dixon for the moment he had stopped.
- 1:49:31the players themselves are wondering what the conference is about,
- 1:49:33and it hasn't been discovered just yet.
- 1:49:36Now, ladies and gentlemen, we have here a gentleman whose wife we're sure you all know,
- 1:49:40one who became famous a number of years ago when he pulled a line
- 1:49:45with Sean and Mike the Tapshooter's shuttle.
- 1:49:47Come down here, Bill Mundy.
- 1:49:49I want you to say a word.
- 1:49:51Here's Bill Mundy, the gentleman from Georgia.
- 1:49:53Thank you, Bill.
- 1:49:55Good afternoon, folks, to the last three-round fumble.
- 1:49:58At the top of the morning, the doors that you have in California
- 1:50:01were probably having this broadcast with your breakfast coffee.
- 1:50:05By the show these boys are putting on up here in the foreground today,
- 1:50:09think of it, just about $3 million worth of baseball play and just for later.
- 1:50:17the Alpha and Omega of diamond perfection assembled to do model combat
- 1:50:22for most worthy cause.
- 1:50:25It serves about 50,000 people here, while there are some people like myself
- 1:50:29that looks like about 10 million.
- 1:50:32By the way, for a long time, I've wondered just where this boy Sean Menning
- 1:50:39self-reported him and feed him for his vibrant, big baseball broadcast.
- 1:50:45No longer in the dark, Alpha.
- 1:50:47I met him the other city.
- 1:50:49I found out his features.
- 1:50:51He's red-headed, style-topped.
- 1:50:54In fact, the most red-headed human being I ever saw.
- 1:50:57Think for yourself the most red-headed man, woman, and child you ever beheld.
- 1:51:02Multiply the state of his or her health by 25,
- 1:51:06and you'll have a big eye out just how red-headed Sean Menning is.
- 1:51:10I'm on my vacation out of here, and so I'll leave you now.
- 1:51:12You go to work, Sean.
- 1:51:14Hey, Bill, how's the old pal Bobby Jones out there?
- 1:51:17Television, the best in the world, the only one you know,
- 1:51:21made a clean, sweet, human-based rich,
- 1:51:25do-over-here in Atlanta, boy, and Atlanta's South-state, South-East County.
- 1:51:33Thanks a lot, Bill Monty.
- 1:51:34We certainly all enjoyed your broadcast of football games
- 1:51:38in regards to all the folks down in Atlanta.
- 1:51:41Ladies and gentlemen, today we are sending you the home-start game.
- 1:51:44Of course, you might tell it that we're being delayed here for a few moments.
- 1:51:47the umpires are changing now.
- 1:51:48the game is just half over, four-and-a-half innings with a score.
- 1:51:51the American League is eight, the National League is four.
- 1:51:54There's one change in the American League lineup now.
- 1:51:56Benny Chapman, which is due to be one of the fastest runners in the major leagues,
- 1:52:00replaces Babe Ruth in a right field for the American League.
- 1:52:04A company is going on.
- 1:52:05Tucker Martin is heading for Fungo.
- 1:52:08Red wrapping is still in the box, sticky behind the bat.
- 1:52:11In field is the same, popped to third, moment short, carrying her second, and Gary gets first.
- 1:52:17Tucker Martin, a right-hander, is up to spare the 1931 series.
- 1:52:20This is a matter for him.
- 1:52:21Tucker Martin, what he did in that series, will live forever and ever.
- 1:52:26And the count is four-two.
- 1:52:29It's the last half of the fifth inning for the American League.
- 1:52:32It's eight, the National League is four.
- 1:52:34Tucker Martin is batting for Dan Martin.
- 1:52:41Quick going, is behind the bat.
- 1:52:43Quick going, behind the bat.
- 1:52:45Moriarty is at second.
- 1:52:48Clearman is at third, and Clark is at first.
- 1:52:53Ball two and strike one.
- 1:52:55the Mexican tie inside, and it's ball three, speed one.
- 1:53:01And Mikey Fish is hanging around home, but after ball four,
- 1:53:04adds a little Keppelbach left.
- 1:53:07Keppelbach is on first base.
- 1:53:13In that series of 1931, every time that Tucker Martin got on, everybody started to give her hands.
- 1:53:19And it was just one thing, will he steal on the first ball, or will he wait for the second?
- 1:53:29Mikey Fish, Mikey is turning around there and batting him left-handed.
- 1:53:34Anybody who can watch one of that upper track of the bull is round two, right-handed.
- 1:53:39Maybe they better stay right here.
- 1:53:41This pitch is a cold strike.
- 1:53:43Back ball, still on the offensive, not a high.
- 1:53:48Right-hander to the counter, off-bridge.
- 1:53:55Ball, it's outside.
- 1:53:57Ball one and the strike one.
- 1:54:02By a charm of the fifth inning, the National League is just four runs behind, the score being eight to four.
- 1:54:07Tucker Martin gets the boys off on the right foot with a base on ball.
- 1:54:13Got a big lead down there at first.
- 1:54:17Strike four.
- 1:54:20Strike two and ball one.
- 1:54:25That was a fast ball just above the knee.
- 1:54:32Donnie Ruffing is in the box.

- 1:54:37Big red-headed picker.
- 1:54:38We red-headed were stick together.
- 1:54:40Strike two and ball one.
- 1:54:41There's a line.
- 1:54:42That's the same thing with the left-hander field.
- 1:54:45Martin's on it.
- 1:54:46Second coming to first.
- 1:54:47Women's has the ball.
- 1:54:48He turns it to second base and he's taken out by Kelly here.
- 1:54:51And Hicks drops it first. Martin drops it third.
- 1:54:57the second one of the afternoon for Frankie Fritz.
- 1:55:02Five-trainer.
- 1:55:04Manager and third baseman.
- 1:55:07Off the pitch for a while at the right-hand sticker is coming up next.
- 1:55:15Did you know that this five-trainer is a great fellow?
- 1:55:20Everybody around here today speaks very well of five-trainer and the manager, Fittsburg.
- 1:55:26He's up there now, ready to go.
- 1:55:27Hicks a ball.
- 1:55:28Low inside.
- 1:55:33That Ruffing takes a lot of time between the pitches, but he works slow and easy.
- 1:55:37Here it is.

- 1:57:17Alright, ready to go. Strike two and ball one.
- 1:57:19High trainer up.
- 1:57:20It's a strong ball.
- 1:57:21Charlie Gerringer had a hand on the ball and dropped it and kicked it out in the right field.
- 1:57:26Martin crossed the plate.
- 1:57:28But Charlie Gerringer was on that ball.
- 1:57:30Conley, all the way, kicked it up and held Frankie for just that second.
- 1:57:33That of course was scored as a base hit.
- 1:57:36That was a peak of a play by Charlie Gerringer.
- 1:57:39the ball was a grounder between first and second and it's passed Jerry.
- 1:57:43But Charlie Gerringer went over and had his glove hand on the ball.
- 1:57:46Formative for a moment and then when he was running at top speed he kicked the ball about 10 yards out forward.

- 1:58:30Strike, ball.
- 1:58:32Runners on first and second, nobody else.
- 1:58:35Strike two, swinging.
- 1:58:42Chuck Klein, you know, is the powerful hitter of the Chicago Tuck.
- 1:58:51Strike two on it, one called and then a long swing.
- 1:58:55Red Ruffin is pitching it, here it is.
- 1:58:57He's playing it, it's a base hit in the right field.
- 1:59:00Frankie Flitch is down and third.
- 1:59:01Steppen has the ball.
- 1:59:02Steppen throws the ball to Fox that's third, holding by 20 on that second.
- 1:59:08Frankie Flitch crosses the plate and the score is 8 to 6.
- 1:59:128 to 6.
- 1:59:14And that's all for Mr. Charlie Ruffin.
- 1:59:19With a count of two and nothing, Chuck Klein, that one in there, fell by and hit a scorching
- 1:59:25line drive into right field.
- 1:59:32Mel Ott.
- 1:59:33Mel Ott.
- 1:59:35the drive lead is coming in, this is not a fifth of a jump, but Mel Ott is coming up
- 1:59:39to the plate swinging two backs.
- 1:59:41If he backs, he will back for tired, tired colors.
- 1:59:53Mel O'Hartner.
- 1:59:55Mel O'Hartner, the Cleveland Indians, is ambling in from deep left center field.
- 2:00:01the American Leaguers are warming up this afternoon in deep left center field and the
- 2:00:05National Leaguers full-back is in deep right center field.
- 2:00:09They're both the same distance apart, except that the American Leaguers, who are the visiting
- 2:00:14club today, incidentally, get plenty of good sunshine out there in center field, a lot
- 2:00:19of the good shade here over in right field.
- 2:00:24Mel O'Hartner, the Cleveland Indians have all got away to a rather cool start this year,
- 2:00:28pitching good baseball, allowing only a two hits per game, but was unable to win.
- 2:00:33But the last six times out he's going to win either.
- 2:00:40Mel O'Hartner, you know, and Justin Kibb, right hand pitcher.
- 2:00:45Go for it, and keep him as he nears short.
- 2:00:47Now that's a long walk from out there.
- 2:00:50Let's see, the sign is 455 feet away.
- 2:00:55455 feet out to the right center field.
- 2:00:59Mel O'Hartner's been warming up.
- 2:01:01Nice in the box, and it's started to warm up with catcher Bill Dickey.
- 2:01:07It's the last half of the fifth inning.
- 2:01:09This game has developed into a three-hitting affair after Carl Hubbell left the game.
- 2:01:17Carl Hubbell, no free hits, but Hubbell was in the box.
- 2:01:23This is the third American League pitcher of the afternoon.
- 2:01:26He started out with a storm as, and then we had Ruffing,
- 2:01:31and now this is the fifth inning we had Mel O'Hartner replacing Charlie Ruffing.
- 2:01:39On the last league batter's side, perhaps he wanted to create a stir for us in the major leagues.
- 2:01:45Mel O'Hartner, you know, is expected to have one of the finest serves in the majors today.
- 2:01:51That's a fairly good fast ball along with it.
- 2:02:00That reporter here, a moment ago, is select Mel O'Hart.
- 2:02:04Mel O'Hart, a New York giant, who started playing professional baseball at the age of 16
- 2:02:11and was going to be a great star ever since.
- 2:02:15He's really run that exciting game over in Washington last year with a long home run.
- 2:02:19It's going into back for Tykeye Garland.
- 2:02:22Mel O'Hartner hits it left handed.
- 2:02:24Here's the first pass, hits the high side of left field.
- 2:02:27Simmons is coming over fast, coming over, over, over.
- 2:02:30It's a foul.
- 2:02:31That ball was fouled by about one foot.
- 2:02:33With everybody running, Simmons going over.
- 2:02:37It was outside.
- 2:02:39Simmons missed it by about one yard, and it was outside at the foul line by about one foot.
- 2:02:45Yes, indeed, that had the fast ball stand up for a moment.
- 2:02:51Mel O'Hart, one of the first balls that looks like an inside ball that he stepped back on.
- 2:03:02It's the fifth inning.
- 2:03:03It's 4-8 to 6 in favor of the American League.
- 2:03:05There's nobody else.
- 2:03:06the tying ones are on first and second.
- 2:03:08Tyke one on Mel O'Hart.
- 2:03:10Here it is.
- 2:03:12Hits the low ball.
- 2:03:14That was a hook ball that was low inside right there, Mel's feet.
- 2:03:18And the count is ball one and strike one.
- 2:03:23This is certainly developing into a long baseball game.
- 2:03:29Ball one and strike one is the count on the hitter.
- 2:03:31Mel O'Hart, here it is.
- 2:03:33Hits the ball to down first base wave and it's foul.
- 2:03:35And it strikes two.
- 2:03:37First base coach says that ball is no good.
- 2:03:44It's all linked up to the umpire, and it's picked on and it's tossed out of nowhere.
- 2:03:48He'll throw the nil, Pepperbuck runs all the way up from the short,
- 2:03:51picks the ball up and hands it to Mel O'Hart.
- 2:03:54Butters the word.
- 2:03:55It's all of encouragement and then runs back to the short top of the...
- 2:04:02Count on Mel O'Hart.
- 2:04:03It's strike two and ball one.
- 2:04:05Runners on first and second to no.
- 2:04:08Trainer on second.
- 2:04:10And fine is on first.
- 2:04:17Mel O'Hart is up.
- 2:04:18Strike two and ball one.
- 2:04:19the pick hits outside.
- 2:04:20Ball two.
- 2:04:22Ball two and strike two.

- 2:04:42Kaepernick, high, and he's trying to bring back the pitches.
- 2:04:45Picks the ball up and throws it to four on that second.
- 2:04:48And fine is forced at second base.
- 2:04:50That was a low line drive.
- 2:04:52the defending captain came in, had both hands on him, tried to catch it at the staff of his shoes,
- 2:04:57but dropped the ball.
- 2:04:58Fine thought that he was going to make the catch and pass back to first.
- 2:05:02Letting Kaepernick pick the ball up and whips it in to go four on that second.
- 2:05:06steps on the back and sucks for it and puts it forward.
- 2:05:10That's a lefty score.
- 2:05:11That's a base hit for an error.
- 2:05:16Mel O'Hart is safe at first.
- 2:05:17Donnerfield is strong.
- 2:05:19Five trainers went to third base.
- 2:05:21Now we have runners on first and third.

- 2:06:12Runners on first and second.
- 2:06:14Wehner up.

- 2:06:40Ball two and strike one.
- 2:06:51Paul Wehner standing up there.
- 2:06:53Knocks the dirt off his shoes.
- 2:06:54Swinging that bat up and down with plenty of determination.
- 2:06:58Ball two, strike one on the hitter.
- 2:07:01Ball three, a back throw.
- 2:07:03Letter high, but it was inside.
- 2:07:06Ball three and strike one.
- 2:07:14Manager Bill Terry is hanging around home plate.
- 2:07:17He's got three substitute hitters attending.
- 2:07:19Fine, hot, and lowly half-waiters.
- 2:07:23Pretty fair three hole bench hitter.
- 2:07:27Ball three, strike one.
- 2:07:29Here it is.
- 2:07:31High ball coming right up here.
- 2:07:33Here's a baseball for your first day, Graham.

- 2:20:44One of the highlights of this afternoon's game is to arrive here early and watch the batting practice.
- 2:20:50You know there's just a great array of hitters out here in both leagues, finest hitters in the country.
- 2:20:55There were hitters shooting him down the alley.
- 2:20:57They were slapping him the whole part of this Polar Ground.
- 2:21:00Ready to go again.
- 2:21:01One out, throwing him on second.
- 2:21:02Three and two on Bill Zickey.
- 2:21:03the pick.
- 2:21:04Ball four and Zickey's left.
- 2:21:10Earl Averill coming up.
- 2:21:12Averill, he's trying to steal the victory of the Indians.
- 2:21:16He came in as a substitute for Robert Osorrez and Cipolle to seek.
- 2:21:20He's going to be misplaced, he's going to be misplaced, exploded and back to the club over the right field corner.
- 2:21:25Time has been called for a moment.
- 2:21:27Al Strach is running out towards second base.
- 2:21:32Let's see, trying to have a substitute runner I believe.
- 2:21:36Yes, I believe Mickey Coughlin is going to run for Bill Zickey.
- 2:21:42Mickey Coughlin replaces Bill Zickey, running at first base and of course Mike will probably catch.
- 2:21:51There he's doing a great job of managing the Detroit Tigers team.
- 2:21:55Just a half game out of first place.
- 2:21:59Zickey's one fine ball player on a slow shot.
- 2:22:02Ready to go.
- 2:22:03Averill is up there with Coughlin on first.
- 2:22:05Coughlin on second.
- 2:22:09First pitch to Averill is a foul.
- 2:22:12A burning fastball is inside.
- 2:22:17Here it is.
- 2:22:19Ball two.
- 2:22:21Slow sweeping curve ball is outside.
- 2:22:25Out on Earl Averill, the Islamic fuggers.
- 2:22:31Ball two.
- 2:22:34Now three. Fastball to Coughlin's side and now the column A will have three and nothing.
- 2:22:43Charlie Gannigan is coming up next.
- 2:22:50Mike's called.
- 2:22:52Oh it's rather funny I heard this afternoon watching one of these managers ordering a lot of other managers around.
- 2:22:59the team managers today, Terry and Coughlin.
- 2:23:05Three and one on Averill.
- 2:23:07High foul up and back.
- 2:23:09And the count is three and two.
- 2:23:15Ball three and strike two.
- 2:23:17First half of the sixth inning in 08-7.
- 2:23:19Nine to seven rather.
- 2:23:20Nine to seven in favor of the American League.
- 2:23:26A full count of three and two.
- 2:23:29Dizzy Dean's all right handers getting ready to pitch.
- 2:23:32Here it is.
- 2:23:33Three and two is the count of play at second base.
- 2:23:36Coughlin slides.
- 2:23:37He's safe.
- 2:23:38Occy Bowling back over the back and stolen a second that time.
- 2:23:42That's when Dean was ready to shoot the ball straight work and he turned and flipped it to second base.
- 2:23:49Now he's ready again.
- 2:23:50There's the stretch.
- 2:23:51Three and two on Averill's hitter.
- 2:23:55Occy Bowling moving around looking out for a second.
- 2:23:57Now Dean steps out of the box.
- 2:24:02Devon and Jocelyn are having a little game of hide and go seek down at second base.
- 2:24:10Now finally he's ready.
- 2:24:11Here it is.
- 2:24:12Three and two.
- 2:24:13Strike three.
- 2:24:14He swings.
- 2:24:15That's Occy Bowling at second base.
- 2:24:16Four times is running down.
- 2:24:17All the way to Stewart.
- 2:24:18Yes, going up.
- 2:24:19And he crosses the ball to Coughlin and Coughlin is out.
- 2:24:27But one is on first and second.
- 2:24:29Her way through at a count of three and two.
- 2:24:31He's swung at the first strike.
- 2:24:33So Coughlin started for third base.
- 2:24:36Then turned around and started back to second.
- 2:24:38Lopez the attacker ran all the way down to the shortstop position.
- 2:24:42And in fact made a strike for Coughlin and missed him.
- 2:24:45Then Coughlin dashed to second base and he crossed the ball forward to Coughlin and Coughlin was tagged out.
- 2:24:50Come in for it.
- 2:24:51That was a funny double play on the whole crowd like this.
- 2:24:55Lopez running out almost the second time.
- 2:24:58That's running around the line.
- 2:24:59Then crossing to second.
- 2:25:00And then the second he crossed that ball to Coughlin and so there throwing down to first.
- 2:25:05Or tying the side after the strikeout.
- 2:25:07Yes sir, that was the kind, that was one of those that you can put in the books.
- 2:25:11That is it was a regular scheduled game.
- 2:25:13A very peculiar double play and one that gave the crowd a thrill.
- 2:25:17Dean opened the American League six pitching for the Nationals.
- 2:25:21Replacing Mungo at the start of the sixth.
- 2:25:23Fox was the first man to come up to facing here in the American League half to six.
- 2:25:27In which they lead nine to seven.
- 2:25:29Fox up.
- 2:25:30Fox to the top went through two and two and Fox struck out.
- 2:25:33Simmons came up.
- 2:25:34Fly to short city.
- 2:25:35Great.
- 2:25:36Backed out for it.
- 2:25:37Dropped it.
- 2:25:38Joe Farser came down the sun.
- 2:25:40And it was scored by the official scorer as a two base hit for Simmons.
- 2:25:44Coughlin up to bat.
- 2:25:45Double hard in the left field.
- 2:25:47Over third base scoring Simmons.
- 2:25:49Dickey came up.
- 2:25:50One on and one out.
- 2:25:51Down went to three and two and he walked.
- 2:25:53And Cotton went in to run boring.
- 2:25:55Averill came to bat.
- 2:25:56Two on and one out.
- 2:25:59And then endued that double play at the strike.
- 2:26:04With, as he swung hard at the ball with Lopez.
- 2:26:08Going down to second.
- 2:26:10It was in one of those plays where both men had moved off their backs.
- 2:26:13Started to run.
- 2:26:14And Averill swung hard.
- 2:26:16Lopez then seeing the situation ran out.
- 2:26:18the runners, Coughlin and Coughlin wondering just what was happening.
- 2:26:24They both were in a position where they could hardly go back without the ball being thrown to base.
- 2:26:28In which they were trying to return.
- 2:26:29Second they could brave it out.
- 2:26:31And that funny play which Tom Manning described to you in turning off this sixth inning.
- 2:26:36So here we go into the sevens with the Americans leading nine to seven.
- 2:26:39And Tom Manning to give you the play by play.
- 2:26:41Here we go.
- 2:26:42That's the one of the last seven to six boys.
- 2:26:44National league coming to bat.
- 2:26:45And it's nine to seven.
- 2:26:47Nine to seven in favor of the American Leaguers.
- 2:26:49And Lopez is the first hitter.
- 2:26:53Lopez you don't hit them right handed.
- 2:26:54No harder is it than a box four.
- 2:26:57the American Leaguers and Mickey Coughlin is got you.
- 2:27:01Counts ball one.
- 2:27:03And swings and misses.
- 2:27:05That's right.
- 2:27:06Ball one and strike one.
- 2:27:08On Lopez.
- 2:27:10Lopez can always be played.
- 2:27:11Gabby Horton that's behind the back for the National League.
- 2:27:15Score nine to seven.
- 2:27:17Attempts to cause Jimmy Fox up by laying down a bump but the ball is followed.
- 2:27:21Strike two.
- 2:27:26That looks like a pretty good idea there for a moment.
- 2:27:30Not for the most part.
- 2:27:31Three times Jimmy Fox has played third base at least regularly.
- 2:27:38Jimmy Fox came into the American League all the time ago as a gasser.
- 2:27:41Then turned out to be third tracker and finally a first base.
- 2:27:47Tell me he looks pretty good over that first too.
- 2:27:50Particularly so when he's up to bat for the National Band.
- 2:27:54Strike two ball one on Lopez.
- 2:27:59Strike three.
- 2:28:01That was a beautiful hook ball coming over there about letter high.
- 2:28:04Both way down around the knees with Lopez swinging over the ball.
- 2:28:12Well Mr. Dean is coming up now.
- 2:28:14Mr. Dean at the same time as a target.
- 2:28:24Mixed ball following and always backs him and throws him right handed.
- 2:28:29Now harder for the Indians to the box.
- 2:28:31Mike Coughlin of the Tigers behind the back.
- 2:28:35Balls the first one up third.
- 2:28:36Strike.
- 2:28:38Fast half of the sixth inning.
- 2:28:39the score nine to seven in favor of the American League.
- 2:28:49Mr. Dean the back and the top strike one.
- 2:28:54Ball run.
- 2:28:56Nicky Coughlin takes the ball out of the third.
- 2:28:58And whips it back to Mel Harder twenty-fifth.
- 2:29:01Ball run and strike one.
- 2:29:09There's the pitch one and one on the hitter.
- 2:29:12Strike two ball.
- 2:29:16Third ball is for Stoveheye.
- 2:29:22Mike Coughlin ball on the American League is in field.
- 2:29:25the man is just as good as the start.

- 2:29:36Last half of the sixth inning one man out.
- 2:29:39Frankie Fish coming up next.
- 2:29:44Two and two.
- 2:29:46Out the long pass of the left field.
- 2:29:47Simmons coming in fast.

- 2:29:50Lehigh coming in there at top speed.
- 2:29:52About low line guard.
- 2:29:54And now that's two out.
- 2:29:56Two out and nobody out.
- 2:30:00Mike Fish coming up.
- 2:30:04Frankie has a whole run based on balls and a single out of three trips to the plate.
- 2:30:10Frankie you know, maxed up, ball up into the right field, upper deck for a home run.
- 2:30:15First up on the first inning.
- 2:30:20Very good.
- 2:30:21Harder's fast ball is just a little bit too high.
- 2:30:25Harder's pitching.
- 2:30:26Coughlin's gapping.
- 2:30:27Two out.
- 2:30:28Last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:30:29Frankie Fish is up.
- 2:30:31Ball one.
- 2:30:32This is round ball by Stork-Holland.
- 2:30:34Comes up with it.
- 2:30:35Marcus and Jerry.
- 2:30:36Fish is out.

- 2:31:05Here at the solo grounds, the all-star game between the American and National Leagues.
- 2:31:11Lopez lead off.
- 2:31:12the cap went to one ball and two strikes.
- 2:31:15And then he swung hard and went down swinging.
- 2:31:18One out.
- 2:31:19Dean then came up.
- 2:31:20Dizzy Dean.
- 2:31:21the Dizzy of the Dean brothers.
- 2:31:22As sometimes you read about him.
- 2:31:24Came up and the cap went to two and two.
- 2:31:26And then he smacked one into left field.
- 2:31:29Simmons coming in very fast courted right at his knees.
- 2:31:32Making a beautiful running shot out of Dean's fly out into left.
- 2:31:36That was two outs for the National Leaguers in the sixth.

- 2:32:30Ball three and strike one.
- 2:32:35First foul for the seventh inning.

- 2:33:10the Lions match up here in the third and the foul remains.
- 2:33:12And it shall remain clean and clean.
- 2:33:21As it slams out to right field, looks like a base clock.
- 2:33:23It is! Just inside the line.
- 2:33:25Kerringer's going to second.
- 2:33:27Oh, here's the throw!
- 2:33:28the 20-point!
- 2:33:29He's out!
- 2:33:31He is out at second base.
- 2:33:33Kind of Kerringer playing one down into the right field.
- 2:33:36Fires out off the floor with that on the ball.
- 2:33:38Picks it up and the ball.
- 2:33:39Kerringer arriving almost at the same time.
- 2:33:42Kerringer's sliding in.
- 2:33:43Hockey-borne took that ball and
- 2:33:45locked it on Kerringer for a sweet, close play.
- 2:33:49Pumpired George Moriarty at his nose.
- 2:33:51Knocked five inches from that play.
- 2:33:5320-to-clerk Kerringer out.

- 2:34:19And strike one.
- 2:34:20First half of the seventh inning.
- 2:34:22One man out.
- 2:34:23Nobody on.
- 2:34:24Here it is.
- 2:34:25Strike two.
- 2:34:26He cuts and misses.
- 2:34:32Harder hurt his fingernail swinging that time.
- 2:34:34He's out of the box and looks at it.
- 2:34:36Put his right back in there.
- 2:34:37Strike two, ball one.
- 2:34:38the pitch.
- 2:34:40Swung rather feebly at that one.
- 2:34:42He started to swing and then tried to hold the swing.
- 2:34:44And it was a foul ball.
- 2:34:47Strike two and ball one.
- 2:34:50That was dangerously close to being a bunch.
- 2:34:56Strike two and ball one.
- 2:34:57And here it is.
- 2:34:59Strike three.
- 2:35:00He swings as misses.

- 2:35:06Penny Chapman is coming up.
- 2:35:14In the American League lineup at present,
- 2:35:16the pitcher is batting second.
- 2:35:20That occurs because early for the hit for the pitcher
- 2:35:23went into the ball game.
- 2:35:24And of course he was better.
- 2:35:25He hits the first ball, hits the ball,
- 2:35:26strikes in the deep center field,
- 2:35:28hits going, going out against the center field.
- 2:35:32Chapman is batting second.
- 2:35:33Here's the ball.
- 2:35:34Chapman's going to third.
- 2:35:36He drops it for a base.
- 2:35:38That was a long strike out against the 455 foot line
- 2:35:43and left center field.
- 2:35:47Chuck Klein and Paul Wehner both dashing out there for it.
- 2:35:51But they were a mile away from it.
- 2:35:53Here's the vernacular.
- 2:35:54Both got right on going.
- 2:35:56Hands to the plant about against the scoreboard.
- 2:36:04That was quite a stock buy for Penny Chapman.
- 2:36:07And how that baby can dash around the base.
- 2:36:11Two men out.
- 2:36:12And Luke Gehrig is up.
- 2:36:16You tell me this Gehrig is quite a ball player.

- 2:36:38A burning back ball is high on the outside
- 2:36:40on the count on Gehrig's ball one and strike two.
- 2:36:47Luke Gehrig is off.
- 2:36:48Pump fire Olin to examine the ball.
- 2:36:51He does.
- 2:36:52Luke Gehrig was right.
- 2:36:54Ball is both out of the game and now we have a new one.
- 2:37:01Count on Larabee-Louis ball one and strike one.
- 2:37:08First half of the seventh inning, nine to seven in favor of the American League.

- 2:37:36It is two-one.
- 2:37:38Strike three.
- 2:37:39Call.
- 2:37:40That was a fast ball right by the alley.
- 2:37:43So high with plenty on it.
- 2:37:45That's all for the game.
- 2:37:47That's all for the American League and the seventh inning.
- 2:37:50I want to mention the grab balloon that is on it.
- 2:37:52Judge Landis is out there as is Mrs. Landis
- 2:37:56and plenty of the baseball owners throughout the American and National Leagues.
- 2:38:03It's all up for the old seventh inning.
- 2:38:05Strike together.
- 2:38:06Here's four-five.
- 2:38:07Come on, four-five.
- 2:38:08That's from all the Americans.
- 2:38:09From all the fans.
- 2:38:10the American League fans, the National League fans here in New York.
- 2:38:13They're out to root and doing plenty of rooting and getting plenty to root about in this all-star game
- 2:38:18with the National Broadcasting Company is bringing to you.
- 2:38:20First pass to seventh league, seventh inning with the American League.
- 2:38:25Judge is firing now to let the National Leagueers come in for their half of it.
- 2:38:28It's not as though that fan was gearing to his bat.
- 2:38:30It went to three and two and he smacked one off the right field side.
- 2:38:34the second was out to second.
- 2:38:35Off to Vaughn.
- 2:38:36Off wing gets down to Vaughn and a very close decision there.
- 2:38:39Gehrig's it was out.
- 2:38:41Harder then came up.
- 2:38:42the count went to one and two and he swung hard and two and then were gone.
- 2:38:46Then Ben Chapman replaced Dave Ruth in right field.
- 2:38:49Ben Chapman came up to bat.
- 2:38:51Leamed on that old apple hard and he smashed the leather way up to the bullpen in left field.
- 2:38:57Four hundred and fifty-five foot marks from the plate.
- 2:39:01That's a re-four hundred and fifty-five foot mark out there for a three-pagger.
- 2:39:05He wheeled his way in the third and looked for a moment as if he wanted to try to tuck it into a homer.
- 2:39:10Gehrig came up and went out on false strike.
- 2:39:14So we go into the nationally dropped to seven.
- 2:39:17the American League leading nine to seven.
- 2:39:18Coming down.
- 2:39:20My trainer, four days into the sixth and final, his first step of right hand huddle was no harder than the box from the American League.
- 2:39:27And then he stopped in behind the bat.
- 2:39:31the first pitch to my trainer is a false strike.
- 2:39:38the ball swings at the foul, strike two.
- 2:39:43the American League infield is Gehrig, Gallinger, Cronin, and Fox.
- 2:39:49In the outfield at the moment, Simmons on left, Averill in center, and Chapman on left.

- 2:39:58Strike two on the header, trainer.
- 2:40:01Ball one.
- 2:40:02Coughlin is outside. Coughlin is throwing that ball down toward third.
- 2:40:10Probably thought he had a corner, but the count is two and one.
- 2:40:16Strike two and ball one.
- 2:40:18Here it is.
- 2:40:21A tipped foul gets away from Coughlin and the count remains.
- 2:40:24Strike two and ball one.
- 2:40:29My trainer, first man up with a match in the league in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:40:38Here it is.
- 2:40:40As a high flyboard right field, it's Fowl.
- 2:40:44And the count remains two and one.
- 2:40:47That was a long strike that hit the bow here in front of the floorboard and right field.
- 2:40:57My trainer has a counter strike two and ball one, leading off for the master league in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:41:03the American League nine, the master league seven.
- 2:41:06the pitch, a brown ball down, first off way.
- 2:41:09Keep short, Cronin has it.
- 2:41:11He's out.
- 2:41:12A beautiful long throw from keep short by Joey Cronin.
- 2:41:15Gehrig, stretching full length to snag that ball.
- 2:41:18And trainer is out by a step.
- 2:41:20A pretty play by Joe Cronin.
- 2:41:25That was perhaps the outstanding infield play of the afternoon.
- 2:41:32Up to now we say the outstanding outfield play was that catch up by Guy Carley early in the game.
- 2:41:39Chuck Ryan is up there.
- 2:41:41Chuck, you know, hits him from the point side.
- 2:41:43He swings and misses.
- 2:41:45A good foul that Coughlin held.
- 2:41:48That was a very pretty picture to gaze upon.
- 2:41:51Chuck Ryan in those days a fine play.
- 2:41:54A foul.
- 2:41:55Third ball, in flow, outside.
- 2:41:58Ball one and strike one.
- 2:42:07Ball one, strike one, the pitch.
- 2:42:09Ball two, which is too high.
- 2:42:12Last half of the seventh inning, one man in seventh and five.
- 2:42:17the American League nine, the master league seven.
- 2:42:22Here it is.
- 2:42:24Get the ball, strike two.
- 2:42:27Canter, Chuck Ryan is ball two, strike two.
- 2:42:36Now up, hanging around on plate.
- 2:42:42Ball two and strike two, one out, nobody on last half of the seventh.
- 2:42:45No honor to 15, Coughlin catching.
- 2:42:47That was a lazy hopper zone.
- 2:42:49First, Gehrig has it.
- 2:42:52Harder, covers the man.
- 2:42:53Harder, goes at the lay from Harder and trying to save.
- 2:43:01That's an error for, no honor to 15.
- 2:43:06Gehrig is giving his time with the error.
- 2:43:09That was a lazy hopper zone.
- 2:43:11First base play.
- 2:43:13Gehrig ran over to get the ball and crossing it underhand to Harder.
- 2:43:16Harder going at top speed.
- 2:43:18Gehrig just did justice this one to the pit.
- 2:43:21Hands through to the right field side of first base.
- 2:43:24Harder had his fingertips on the ball but couldn't hold it.
- 2:43:26So of course Gehrig will be tied with an error.
- 2:43:32Something has happened down there to Joe Coughlin.
- 2:43:35Charlie Cary is Joe Coughlin, an unbiased morality.
- 2:43:39Oh Joe, you broke his belt down there, I believe.
- 2:43:45No blame for breaking a fret on that last play.
- 2:43:48He's probably breaking first and second as well.
- 2:43:50That was a slow play.
- 2:43:59That breakfast was good going this morning.
- 2:44:01I'm sure it wasn't eating too much.
- 2:44:03But well, anyway, Joe's ready to go and we're ready to go with the long start of the 7th inning.
- 2:44:06One man out, the plan is on first.
- 2:44:09the route is up.
- 2:44:10the score is 9 to 7.
- 2:44:12Anything can happen.
- 2:44:14the fans out here at the ball of Johnson, New York are well aware of it.
- 2:44:21Melado's up there.
- 2:44:23Knocked the first off and she gets right in there close to the plate and we're ready to go.
- 2:44:27He swings with the high-bounder down short.
- 2:44:29Boomer, who's down here?
- 2:44:32Just climbs wide in the carryover.
- 2:44:34No further plays.
- 2:44:35Good defense.
- 2:44:37Carrying a plan to top the ball over the carry.
- 2:44:40That was useless.
- 2:44:42That was one of those real high-bounders.
- 2:44:44It's down at about 20 feet in the air.
- 2:44:46Boomer's going in fast, hits it over to Gary and they're getting just 20 on the fourth,
- 2:44:50they're second, and then just towards the heart of the second base.
- 2:44:54And that's just Gary there a little bit.
- 2:44:56Just enough to make it impossible for a play.
- 2:45:05Oh, there goes the left-hander.
- 2:45:07Oh, there's no hit to left-hander.
- 2:45:10Two more outs.
- 2:45:12Go out on third base.
- 2:45:13All around.
- 2:45:18All three.
- 2:45:19Go for it.
- 2:45:20Boomer turns away from the plate and the count is two and nothing.
- 2:45:27That's all for the 720.
- 2:45:29Two outs.
- 2:45:30Go out on first base.
- 2:45:34It is a very high style.
- 2:45:38Lee Perry goes coming in, half-way between first and half.
- 2:45:43He's under it and has it, retiring the National Leaguers in the seventh inning.
- 2:45:47At the end of the second inning, the score, American League ninth, the National League seventh.
- 2:45:52This game coming from the follow ground and is being sent to you by the National Broadcasting Company.
- 2:45:57Come in forward.
- 2:45:59the National League top of the seventh started off with Pye Boomer up to bat to face no harder,
- 2:46:04the curveball artist, and Pye Cronin banged one out to deep short where Cronin took the ticket and shot it to Gehrig.
- 2:46:11And Cronin was out at first on a very, very close decision, but a beautiful play by Cronin,
- 2:46:18taking that ball and shooting it over to Gehrig.
- 2:46:21Then Klein came to bat.
- 2:46:23Josh Klein, the heavy hitter of the Cubs, and banged one hard down to Gehrig.
- 2:46:28Harder, ran over to cover first.
- 2:46:30Gehrig tossed it underhanded to harder.
- 2:46:34It just hit the tip of his fingers and bound it out, and Klein was safe on the error.
- 2:46:39Klein on first then with one out.
- 2:46:42Neloff coming up to bat, one on and one out.
- 2:46:45Neloff smacked one down to Cronin.
- 2:46:47Cronin tossed to Gehrig, forcing out Klein.
- 2:46:49Gehrig shot it down to Gehrig, but up at speed to throw.
- 2:46:54So it was one on and two off.
- 2:46:56the winner at bat, who hit a high fly with Gehrig, came in and took her time to side.
- 2:47:00And here we go into the American League, top of the eighth.
- 2:47:03Jaren Fong, come in.
- 2:47:05Jimmy Fong, right-hand hitter, is first up with Izzy Dean in the box,
- 2:47:08Lopez behind the bat, and Fong takes a terrific putt at the first one and misses.
- 2:47:12Strike one.
- 2:47:13No changes as we start the eighth inning.
- 2:47:18Ball on a fastball is too high.
- 2:47:21Fong carries on first, Jimmy Herman on second, Fong short, trainer third.
- 2:47:27Off to the right field, Paul Wehner is in center, and Suc Klein is in left, as is the left.
- 2:47:33There's a long strike by either left field, Suc Klein is coming in,
- 2:47:37and Fong going out, and nobody is able to get there, and Fong pulls up at second.
- 2:47:44Suc Klein was playing over in deep left underfield that time for Jimmy Fong,
- 2:47:50and he's looking up towards the stands to other family.
- 2:47:52He lost the ball and the start.
- 2:47:55He came over and tried to reach the ball with his outstretched left hand,
- 2:47:59but missed it by about a foot.
- 2:48:01It is justly scored as a two-base shot for Jimmy Fong.
- 2:48:07Al Simmons, another right-hand batter is up next.
- 2:48:13All reliable Al Simmons. Here it is, ball on.
- 2:48:28Great drive for the eighth inning, and nobody else.
- 2:48:31Fong's down second.
- 2:48:34Ball's two.
- 2:48:36Team fastball is trying the outside corner on Al Simmons.
- 2:48:40Just barely missed with those two.
- 2:48:42There's the stretch.
- 2:48:44the pitch.
- 2:48:46the swing is just a wide, short pass and goes the stretch.
- 2:48:49the pitch.
- 2:48:51the swing is just a wide, short left field.
- 2:48:54Fong going out fast. He's under it.
- 2:48:56Apparently makes a nice copy of it.
- 2:48:58Archie Fong goes rather deep into left field to make that shot.
- 2:49:03You know, with Fong and Simmons at bat, Bill Terry, he's the manager today at least,
- 2:49:09and just trying to play over in deep left center field.
- 2:49:13That was almost another hit for the American Leaguers,
- 2:49:16but Archie Fong was able to travel back-back to put the ball over his shoulder in short left field.
- 2:49:22One man out. Joe Fong is up there.
- 2:49:30As he hits the first ball, a line smashes the way.
- 2:49:33Center field, all wingers goes over and makes the catch.
- 2:49:36That whips it back into second base. It is taken there by Archie Fong, but Fong gets back safe.
- 2:49:45Joe Fong is still at that ball right on the scene.
- 2:49:48Low line drive, ball later in right center.
- 2:49:52Mike Coughlin is coming up.
- 2:49:59He's being announced over the loudspeaker as the manager of the Detroit Tigers, Mike Coughlin.
- 2:50:07Mike's doing a swell job over there too.
- 2:50:10Two men out, you know. Box is on second.
- 2:50:14Strike, ball.
- 2:50:20Izzy Dean, ball right-hander, and the St. Louis Cardinals is in the box.
- 2:50:25Ball.
- 2:50:29Outstretched comes over, retrieves the ball, and whips it back over to Lopez.
- 2:50:33Lopez to the umpire, we're ready to go.
- 2:50:36Fight two on Mickey Coughlin.
- 2:50:44First half of the eighth inning, American League nine, National League seven.
- 2:50:49Two men out, box is on second.
- 2:50:52There it is.
- 2:50:57Ball one.
- 2:50:59the battery started to walk toward the dugout.
- 2:51:04Strike two and ball one. the battery is cut at the core level for Victor Holmes.
- 2:51:07He wouldn't stand for it, however.
- 2:51:12Mickey Coughlin is holding his spot down there by the knees on the inside of the plate,
- 2:51:16indicating that he thought it was low inside.
- 2:51:18Anyway, the count is strike two and ball one.
- 2:51:22First half of the eighth inning, two men out.
- 2:51:27Izzy Dean pitching and Lopez catching.
- 2:51:32Strike two, ball one.
- 2:51:35Izzy Dean steps off the rubber. Box goes back, cuts his second base.
- 2:51:41Dean then picks up the rods and balls, and we're ready to go.
- 2:51:47We have a lot of canaries out here for the moment, everybody whistling for some reason.
- 2:51:54They're all mocking Al Schacht.
- 2:51:57Battle two inside.
- 2:52:00Al Schacht and all 50 percent of that great comedy team of Al Schacht and Schacht.
- 2:52:07All Al starts to whistle, everybody seems to follow suit.
- 2:52:11Strike two, ball two.
- 2:52:13Now, Mickey Coughlin, the pitch, it's a ground ball, a lazy grounder down second.
- 2:52:18Puppets in fast and slow, a beautiful play, and Coughlin is out at first,
- 2:52:22retiring the American Leaguers in the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:52:26Come in fourth.
- 2:52:28Well, it's now about ten minutes past four o'clock,
- 2:52:31and this baseball game starts at 1.30 Eastern Daylight Saving Time.
- 2:52:35And for the two hours and 40 minutes, it's been transparent here in the Polo Ground
- 2:52:41where the American League All-Stars and the National League All-Stars
- 2:52:45are presented to you by the National Broadcasting Company
- 2:52:48from the Polo Ground here in New York where we've just finished the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:52:52the American League at bat, Fox came up and banged a high fly into left field,
- 2:52:56and Chuck Klein, who's been playing way out deep in left center,
- 2:52:59ran hard, down fast, but couldn't quite get to it and went for a two-base hit for Fox.
- 2:53:05Simmons came up.
- 2:53:07Simmons came up, and Vaughn backed out into left field
- 2:53:11and took a fly from Simmons almost in the same place on which Fox had gotten two bases.
- 2:53:17Then Coughlin came up the bat with one on and one out, lined one hard at the center field.
- 2:53:22Paul Wanner moved over very fast and cleared it just as it threatened to go by him.
- 2:53:27So there were two men down and still one on.
- 2:53:30Coughlin came up. Coughlin banged a slow one just right down about 20 feet off second base.
- 2:53:36Thurman came in fast, grouped it up on the fly, banged and wheeled it over to Terry,
- 2:53:40retiring the American League in the eighth.
- 2:53:42the score is American League nine, the National League seven,
- 2:53:45as we go into the National League half of the eighth inning with Bill Terry just coming up the bat.
- 2:53:50All right, Tom Manning, come in.
- 2:53:53the American League is better, you know, as we come to the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:53:57Mel Harder of the Cleveland Indians is in the box.
- 2:53:59Mickey Coughlin of the Detroit Tigers, the captain and manager, is behind the bat.
- 2:54:04Infield is the same, Fox is at third, Coughlin at short, Scherringer at second, and Jerry at first.
- 2:54:10the outfield is Chapman in right, Averill is center, Simmons in left.
- 2:54:14They're ready to go with Terry, left-handed, and the rest.
- 2:54:16Holds it back down and hits the bump, but pulls it back and it's declared a strike.
- 2:54:21Harder's curveball, catching the outside corner of the plate.
- 2:54:27That's the drillers up there, and here's the pitch. That's the ball. Another curveball down to Ross Terry's feet.
- 2:54:35Hand-to-counter, ball runs and strike one.
- 2:54:38It's the last half of the eighth inning. the National League is two runs behind, nine and seven.
- 2:54:46Here it is. A ground ball to the box, Tom Manning over near the track, takes it, pounce, he's out.
- 2:54:53Another pretty play by Bill Turner.
- 2:54:55That was a foul to the fast drill, harder, and Tom Manning's act over close to second base pushing,
- 2:55:00picked it up and went out of position, whips it over to Scherring, and Terry was out on a fast play.
- 2:55:06Nobody on. He's on. Nobody on.
- 2:55:15Aki Bowen, left-hand hitter. All the pitch-first pilots is up.
- 2:55:20Hits the first ball, six-pounce, short. Tom Manning comes up with it. the throw is wide, but Terry reaches over
- 2:55:27and strikes the ball, and he is out. Scherring is getting a nice round of applause for that act over at first base.
- 2:55:34That was a scorching curveball, and Joe Tom Manning has his own way, left a little bit for it,
- 2:55:40and picked it up and has it passed fast to get ball. Tom goes down to first base like nobody's business.
- 2:55:47Thought it was a slow play, two outs, nobody on. Lopez is up.
- 2:55:52Hits the first ball, hits the long side, close to the foul line, ends his stand, but it's fouled.
- 2:55:58That ball hit the stands out in right field. That was fouled by about a yard and a half.
- 2:56:07Strike one, Lopez has gone to first base and was on his way to second.
- 2:56:14That's a camp run on foul ball.
- 2:56:21He's up by right on his toes this afternoon. He's had some pretty hard line decisions to make, particularly
- 2:56:30George Moriality. George was over here at third, had a couple of close ones earlier in the game.
- 2:56:35Now he's over there at second, and he's had a couple of funny close ones out there at second.
- 2:56:41the boys, the family are all satisfied with his up. Boys in blue this afternoon are doing a sweet job out here.
- 2:56:49Lopez is back to the plate. He hits the next one, a high, lazy, barred, or down three.
- 2:56:54Pops to carry Lopez is out at the end of the eighth inning. No runs, no hits, and no errors.
- 2:57:00At the end of the eighth inning is the score of the American League 9, the National League 7.
- 2:57:06This game coming to you from the Polo Browns of New York City.
- 2:57:10This is for the Massable Forecasting Company. Come in forward.
- 2:57:14Well, the junior circuit certainly made short work of the elder league in the eighth inning here.
- 2:57:21the National League came up with Phil Cary at bat, and he banged out one of his usual high ones down to short,
- 2:57:26and Joe Cronin took it on the run, got it over to Gehrig, and he was out.
- 2:57:32A sweet short drop to this man, Cronin.
- 2:57:35Cronin came to bat, and Cronin got up, pushed her down to deep short.
- 2:57:40Cronin got it right down between his ankles, picked it up, threw the first,
- 2:57:44and Gehrig then threw a terrific round of applause by keeping his left foot on the bag,
- 2:57:49sending out, it looked like, almost two yards, and winging that ball, that wide throw from Cronin,
- 2:57:55retiring Cronin, and the crowd did show their appreciation of Lou Gehrig as they usually do.
- 2:58:00They wouldn't have as much get-fat Lou at first if it was in shooting distance of Lou's gloves.
- 2:58:06Then Lopez came to bat.
- 2:58:08Lopez banged one hard down between the short, top, and third.
- 2:58:12Third base about 18, or at least six to eight yards, but Fox went over fast, took it,
- 2:58:19got it across on that long peg from third to first, retiring Lopez.
- 2:58:23They went down in one, two, three order, Terry, Vaughn, and Lopez in the National League half of the eighth inning.
- 2:58:30We're moving now into the ninth, ninth inning of this All-Star game,
- 2:58:34with the American League coming to bat leading by two runs.
- 2:58:37They scored two runs in the fourth, six in the fifth, and one in the sixth,
- 2:58:43or a total of nine, while the National Leaguers scored one tally in the first inning,
- 2:58:49one in the third, and three in the fifth. They trail now by seven.
- 2:58:53Nine through seven is the score with the American League coming up to bat here in the ninth inning.
- 2:58:58Here's Tom Manning to give it to you. Come in Tom.
- 2:59:02One of the fine things of this ballgame is practically everybody out here has gotten into the ballgame,
- 2:59:07as expected to on the side of the National League particularly.
- 2:59:11So far, Rick Ferrell, Jimmy Dyke, Frank Higgins, and West haven't broken into the lineup
- 2:59:18of the American League. All of the pitchers, practically all of the catchers,
- 2:59:23outfielders, and infielders of the National League have had their turn now.
- 2:59:28Ready to go in the first half of the ninth inning, Earl Averill of the Cleveland Indians,
- 2:59:33the left-hand batter is first up, and Frank Houch, Frank Houch of the Boston Braves,
- 2:59:37the little right-hander is on the mound for the National Leaguers.
- 2:59:41That seems to be the only change in the lineup as we play the ninth inning.
- 2:59:46the National Leaguers infield of Gary Furman, Vaughn, and Treanor Lopez-Carty.
- 2:59:53Averill hits the back with a little pop right of left field, looks like a base hit, Vaughn going back.
- 2:59:57Oh, what a catch, what a catch, what a catch.
- 3:00:01Man, look at the line up Vaughn.
- 3:00:04Well, you all radio friends, absolutely the outstanding fielding play of this afternoon
- 3:00:17came in so far as we are concerned, and I think that we'll have plenty to agree with.
- 3:00:22Hockey ball and a little short stop of the Pittsburgh Pirates left his position on that grouping liner,
- 3:00:28of a Texas trigger by Earl Averill, and went out and took that ball way out at the edge of the provision
- 3:00:35in the left field corner right at the very fingertip.
- 3:00:39He kept right on going and ran until he ran into the barrier in the left field corner.
- 3:00:43That was a sweet catch by Archie Vaughn.
- 3:00:47Well, with ball players like this around the diamond anything can happen.
- 3:00:51What not, Charlie Geringer is up, and a shot at ball two.
- 3:00:55the shot from the Boston Braves is hitting.
- 3:00:58Ball three, another one low outside, three and nothing on Charlie Geringer.
- 3:01:09Our center is being attracted for a moment, right back,
- 3:01:13silver plane flying over the polo ground.
- 3:01:16Geringer walks.
- 3:01:19Geringer walks on fourth straight.
- 3:01:22It's a nice inning and a run out.
- 3:01:24Mel Harding is going up to hit.
- 3:01:26Harder is getting a nice round of applause from the fans here.
- 3:01:36Mel Harding, an old batsman, right-handed.
- 3:01:39A bat from right-handed.
- 3:01:46Sends the sacrifice to DeBunk down first base way in its bowels.
- 3:01:56National League has picked the ball up.
- 3:01:58Bill Terry picks it up and says, come on, throw this up on your toes and whips it around.
- 3:02:02Frank Carlton tries it again, and Harder is back in the box with a count strike one.
- 3:02:09Charlie Geringer has been on that base a lot this afternoon.
- 3:02:14Harder again attempts to put it to pop fly, low passes under it and takes it.
- 3:02:19That ball was only about two or three feet over his head and about eight or ten feet towards first base.
- 3:02:26Lopez Ziprofist's mask was under it, Charlie Geringer, however, was close to first base and got back safely.
- 3:02:33Now we have two men out.
- 3:02:37Penny Chapman is up.
- 3:02:42Last time up, Penny Chapman's back one out to left center field, 455 feet away.
- 3:02:49That is a pitch out.
- 3:02:52Lopez Ziprofist is calling for a pitch out, hoping to lift Geringer off first.
- 3:02:56Ball one.
- 3:02:58Nice hitting.
- 3:02:59Chapman is up, 90 to 70 in the American League.
- 3:03:01It's passed over to first, no go.
- 3:03:07Penny Chapman, you know, hits him right handed.
- 3:03:10A bowel bowels.
- 3:03:12Downs third base line and a count on.
- 3:03:15Chapman is bowels one and strike one.
- 3:03:22Luke Geringer's up next.
- 3:03:30There it is.
- 3:03:32Ball two, a fast ball is high outside and the count is ball two and strike one.
- 3:03:47Here it is.
- 3:03:49Long fly out to left field.
- 3:03:53Fine coming in.
- 3:03:54He stumbled but paid the tax for the third out.
- 3:03:58the first time was playing very, very deep out there again.
- 3:04:02Had to come in for that ball and over to his right.
- 3:04:05Over toward the far line but made a nice running catch, retiring the American Leaguers in the ninth inning.
- 3:04:10So the National League has come to bat two runs behind in the ninth inning.
- 3:04:15Come in for it.
- 3:04:17We go into the last half of the ninth with the National League trailing by two runs.
- 3:04:22the American League half of the ninth started off with Frank House coming into the bat to pitch for the Nationals.
- 3:04:27Avril was the first man to face him.
- 3:04:30Avril smacked a fly out right on the left field foul line just a couple of feet in.
- 3:04:36And Bond dropped the crowd to their feet for a great play, a great, beautiful catch, running out there,
- 3:04:43going back to position short and making an absolutely terrific sparkling catch.
- 3:04:47There's almost no adjective that you can apply to that that would be too great or too superlative to describe Bond's great catch of Avril's fly out on the left field foul line.
- 3:04:56Geringer came up and then got four straight and walked.
- 3:05:00So there's one on base and one out with Mel Harder came up.
- 3:05:04Mel Harder came up and tried to bunt, banged it down the first base line and rolled foul.
- 3:05:09So he came back to the base, picked up his bat, and again tried to pop it up just a few feet away from home plate.
- 3:05:17Lopez just off his mat, went out there under it and took it for a nice catch, making two men gone in the American League half of the ninth.
- 3:05:24Kaplan, Ben Kaplan came up, always a very dangerous man batting order.
- 3:05:29Heath Maccaflough on the left field, Klein, Chuck Klein came in very fast, stumbled, given bringing the arc to the fans and now flung before he took it.
- 3:05:37But did take it, retiring the Americans to the ninth and here we go into the national league half of the ninth, failing by two runs.
- 3:05:42the Americans, nine, the national service. Come in, Bob Manning.
- 3:05:46Reikhauser, back to the right hand of his up batting, placed on a beautiful box, Kaplan is out there and, boom! He's out! He's out!
- 3:05:54By not pulling the foot, looked at the fans, some of them are howling as if it's close.
- 3:05:57Forgiving Kaplan a nice hand on that play. Reikhauser dropped that one, dropped that one, perfect.
- 3:06:03It's all about ten feet out for the pitch. Kaplan ripped that pass off, was out and picked that ball up and flipped it over to Gary.
- 3:06:10And Frank House for a pitcher with 20 pasts and getting down there. Sorry that was close, that was a slow play to watch. One out.
- 3:06:22Willie Herman is up.
- 3:06:27Willie Inoil hits them right handed, harder as pitching, Kaplan catching.
- 3:06:31Foul back, great one.
- 3:06:34Willie Herman, with playing second base is up.
- 3:06:43Nice hitting, one man off, no harder as pitching. Mickey Cochran behind the bat.
- 3:06:47Infield, Gary first, Gary second, Coleman short and box third. Here's the pitch.
- 3:06:55the ground ball just inside the third base, Frank House on the left field corner, it's a base knock.
- 3:07:00the ball turns off the wall, Simmons has it flipped it into Gary, he flies, he's face a double.
- 3:07:10Little Willie Herman, like that one, right on the closed label.
- 3:07:16Well, it's still a ball game, one man out of the ninth inning.
- 3:07:21Two runs behind.
- 3:07:23Willie Herman is on second base.
- 3:07:26That was a peak of a hit, the ball struck just about one foot inside the bag with Jimmy Foxx leaving for it.
- 3:07:33But of course he had both hands, that's the weather to get it.
- 3:07:38High trainer, manager in third base from the Pittsburgh Pirates Cup.
- 3:07:44Ball one, a fast ball is high inside.
- 3:07:48the American League battery since the fifth inning is Mel Harder, Mickey Cochran.
- 3:07:57As the long drive up in the stands, but it's foul.
- 3:08:01Ball run and strike one.
- 3:08:07It was a smash up in the right field stand.
- 3:08:11This high trainer, you know, is quite a ball player.
- 3:08:18Yes indeed, he's a right hand hitter and the count for one strike one.
- 3:08:22the pitch, ball two, Harder's football, flips the outside corner and the count on high trainer, ball two and strike one.
- 3:08:35Willie Herman, you know, is on second base.
- 3:08:38One man out of the ninth inning, two runs behind.
- 3:08:43Harder, but here it is.
- 3:08:45It's a strike call.
- 3:08:47That ball got away from Cochran, rolled about four feet away and now the count on high trainer is ball two and strike two.
- 3:08:56Two and two on high trainer, he hits him right handed, you know.
- 3:09:11Here it is.
- 3:09:13He swings and it's a drive to the outfield.
- 3:09:17West is playing center field for the American Lakers and West made that catch.
- 3:09:24I hope you'll find me for that delay.
- 3:09:26We knew it wasn't Avril coming in and that change in center field in this right inning was not announced.
- 3:09:32West of the St. Louis Browns is playing center field for the American Lakers.
- 3:09:36West made that catch.
- 3:09:38Making it two out of the ninth inning.
- 3:09:47Harder on second base.
- 3:09:49And Chuck Ryan of the Chicago Cubs, the left hand batter is coming up, strike one, swinging.
- 3:09:55Ninth inning and all, two men out.
- 3:09:58Billy Herman is on second base to score American League ninth, National League seventh.
- 3:10:08This boy Harder sticks a lot of baseball since replacing Ruffing in the fifth inning.
- 3:10:13Strike one on the hitter, strike two, he swings and misses.
- 3:10:18That ball is down to the outfield.
- 3:10:21One on the hitter, he swings and misses.
- 3:10:28That ball is down to the outfield.
- 3:10:29Chuck Ryan taking it long, follow through swings, and now the count is strike two.
- 3:10:39That ball is down to the outfield.
- 3:10:40Chuck Ryan taking it long, follow through swings, and now the count is strike two.
- 3:10:47Ninth inning, nine to seven in favor of the American League, two men out.
- 3:10:51Billy Herman on second.
- 3:10:52Chuck Ryan, a mighty hitter, is up.
- 3:10:55Back to right field, but it's foul into the stands.
- 3:11:02That ball is what we call a hook and golf.
- 3:11:07It's out there towards Kerrigan and then it's curved right over into the stands.
- 3:11:17Strike two.
- 3:11:18Last half of the ninth inning and all, the National League is two runs behind them.
- 3:11:21They have one run on the bags.
- 3:11:23Billy Herman at second base, and Chuck Ryan on his long distance hitter at the plate.
- 3:11:27Mel Harder is pitching, Coughlin is catching, it's set, and here it is.
- 3:11:31It's a ball.
- 3:11:32That ball is high outside and the count is strike two and ball one.
- 3:11:37Not a single fan has left this ball park unless it was a doctor or something this afternoon,
- 3:11:43so if anything can happen at any time, any kind of a smash ball, tie it up, you know.
- 3:11:49Strike two, ball on the pitch, as it drives out for Safeway.
- 3:11:53Kerrigan fumbles the ball, it's not too hard.
- 3:11:56He is out of the close play and the ball game is over in favor of the American League.
- 3:12:00the score of nine to seven.
- 3:12:02This is Kyle Manning saying good afternoon from the Polar Bounds in New York,
- 3:12:05and here is Graham McElnay.
- 3:12:06Come in, Graham.
- 3:12:07Thank you, Don.
- 3:12:08There are so many features in this ball game that we won't try to go into them at all.
- 3:12:12It's been almost three hours, three hour ball game up to about one minute.
- 3:12:17the outstanding features in my mind now just as I look back over the game were the pitching
- 3:12:22for the first three innings of that mighty pitcher, Kyle Hubbell.
- 3:12:26He was gorgeous out there in the box and the fielding stunt of Archie Bond of Pittsburgh.
- 3:12:33Those stand out in my mind.
- 3:12:36Besides some of the hitting, of course.
- 3:12:38I'll tell you who gets the hitting and then the hitting and then we'll quit.
- 3:12:41For the American League men, Kerrigan got two singles.
- 3:12:46Dickey got a single.
- 3:12:48Simmons got two doubles and a single.
- 3:12:51Cronin, a single and a double.
- 3:12:53Averill, a triple and a double.
- 3:12:55Fox, a single and a double.
- 3:12:57And Ruffing, a single.
- 3:12:59Chapman, a triple.
- 3:13:01Of course, there was only a couple of them in the game all the time.
- 3:13:04There might have been some of them who might have done more.
- 3:13:06For the National League, Frisch.
- 3:13:08Thank you, Frisch.
- 3:13:09Got a homer on the first ball pitch off Lexy Gomez.
- 3:13:11Gomez didn't go so well today as he has been going through his American League team.
- 3:13:16Frisch got a homer and a single.
- 3:13:19Kastraner of Pittsburgh got two singles.
- 3:13:22Medwitch got a beautiful long homer and up into the second field of the stands in left field.
- 3:13:28There was not a single.
- 3:13:29Cline, a single.
- 3:13:30And Billy Herman, who came into the game late, got a double.
- 3:13:34Those are the outstanding features of the day and this afternoon.
- 3:13:38the only other great outstanding feature was the tremendous length of the game.
- 3:13:42It took three hours of paper and there was all kinds here this afternoon.
- 3:13:47But it was a great game.
- 3:13:49the Americans have won again as they did last year.
- 3:13:52Last year it was 4-2.
- 3:13:54Today it was 9-7 in favor of the American League over the Nationals in the All-Star Game played at the Polar Ground in New York City.
- 3:14:02It's time to go now.
- 3:14:04the garbage grew out on the field.
- 3:14:05the elves got getting to the exit and so will we.
- 3:14:09This is Graham Hackney speaking.
- 3:14:10And we'll leave you now and just by telling you that the record of this game has been given to you by Tom Manning on play-by-play and Thorpe Bond between innings.
- 3:14:21And I'd like to thank you for being here too and through the facilities of the National Broadcasting Company.
- 3:14:27Goodbye.
- 3:14:28We'd like to thank the makers of Ambrosia for relinquishing their broadcast period this afternoon in order to do my dear minutes in clarity.
- 3:14:40Thank you.
