- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Iris Kirby House is unable to take
- 0:04Speaker 1: people at its shelter until further notice after what it's
- 0:07Speaker 1: calling a serious flood. Iris Kirby House issued an update
- 0:11Speaker 1: on its Facebook page yesterday asking people not to drop
- 0:14Speaker 1: off donations because the impact of the flooding has left
- 0:18Speaker 1: them without the space or capacity to safely receive and
- 0:21Speaker 1: store items. It says the best way in which the
- 0:24Speaker 1: public can offer support is to allow its team the
- 0:27Speaker 1: time and space to manage the situation. There's no immediate
- 0:31Speaker 1: word on whether there were any residents staying at Iris
- 0:34Speaker 1: Kirby House at the time of the flooding or how
- 0:36Speaker 1: those seeking shelter services will be accommodated. The Royal Newfoundland
- 0:41Speaker 1: Constabulary is reviewing its partnership with Crimestoppers following a cybersecurity
- 0:46Speaker 1: attack affecting the program's P3 platform. Linda Swain reports.
- 0:51Speaker 2: More than 170,000 tips submitted through P3 software between January
- 0:55Speaker 2: of 2022 and November of 2025 were affected. approximately 14,000
- 1:01Speaker 2: of which included personal information. Crimestoppers is anonymous and names
- 1:05Speaker 2: are never provided, but some of the tips may have
- 1:07Speaker 2: contained identifying information. The breach has led some police services
- 1:11Speaker 2: to suspend their use of Crimestoppers, which is run by
- 1:14Speaker 2: Navigate 360, a U.S.-based company. The RNC says it is
- 1:18Speaker 2: working to better understand the incident and confirm that the
- 1:21Speaker 2: anonymity of participants is fully protected. While the constabulary says
- 1:26Speaker 2: it has not received any safety concerns regarding the breach,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it is encouraging anyone with concerns about their personal safety
- 1:32Speaker 2: to reach out to their local police detachment.
- 1:36Speaker 1: The provincial government expects to see a trap house hotline
- 1:39Speaker 1: to be up and running in the foreseeable future. Earlier
- 1:42Speaker 1: this year, the CEO of NL Housing indicated that a
- 1:45Speaker 1: trap house report hotline was being set up to allow
- 1:48Speaker 1: the public to report problem properties. Trap houses typically cause
- 1:53Speaker 1: disruption for surrounding residents through criminal and drug activity, violence,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and garbage. St. John's West MHA Keith White asked for
- 2:02Speaker 1: an update from the minister responsible for NL Housing, Chris Tibbs.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Can the Minister of Housing please confirm whether this hotline
- 2:09Speaker 2: is currently operational and if not, when will it be
- 2:12Speaker 2: and why has it taken so long?
- 2:13Speaker 1: The Honourable Minister of Social Support, Wellbeing, responsible for housing.
- 2:18Speaker 2: As promised, that hotline will be up and running. We're
- 2:20Speaker 2: still going through some agreements there. But like I say,
- 2:24Speaker 2: Newfoundland Labrador Housing, I just want to thank the staff there.
- 2:26Speaker 2: They do some great work. We've got a lot of
- 2:28Speaker 2: vulnerable people in this province, Mr.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Speaker.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But like I always say, we can only be judged
- 2:33Speaker 2: as a society by how we treat our most vulnerable.
- 2:35Speaker 2: So we're going to make sure that hotline is in
- 2:36Speaker 2: place and any other supports that the people of this
- 2:38Speaker 2: province need.
- 2:39Speaker 1: There will be a special debate in the House of
- 2:42Speaker 1: Assembly on the final Churchill Falls agreements, but it appears
- 2:45Speaker 1: as though members may not get to vote on it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Premier Tony Wacom made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. He says
- 2:52Speaker 1: the House of Assembly already endorsed the Churchill Falls agreement
- 2:55Speaker 1: during the September debate, referring to the deal passing with
- 2:59Speaker 1: a final vote of 21-18. and they will not be
- 3:02Speaker 1: renegotiating what was already voted on. Wakeham says the negotiating
- 3:07Speaker 1: team will host technical briefings for MHAs, and the agreements
- 3:11Speaker 1: will be brought back to the legislature for debate. Wakeham
- 3:14Speaker 1: was not clear when asked whether there will be a
- 3:16Speaker 1: vote on the final agreements.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That's something that you'll have to wait and see. Right
- 3:21Speaker 2: now the plan is to make sure that the definitive
- 3:24Speaker 2: agreements line up with what was voted on in the
- 3:28Speaker 2: House of Assembly.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Our heads are going to be in a spin trying
- 3:31Speaker 1: to keep the clock straight come the spring as yet
- 3:34Speaker 1: another province, this one as close to home as it gets.
- 3:38Speaker 1: plans to get rid of daylight saving time. British Columbia, Alberta,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and Manitoba have already done so, and now the Parti
- 3:45Speaker 1: Quebecois says it's going to stick with standard time year-round.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Newfoundland and Labrador has shown no interest in even considering
- 3:53Speaker 1: going down that path. That means we could see a
- 3:55Speaker 1: situation where the island of Newfoundland and a small part
- 3:59Speaker 1: of Labrador would be separated by two and a half
- 4:01Speaker 1: hours and most of Labrador and Quebec by two hours.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Daylight saving time was adopted in Canada during World War
- 4:08Speaker 1: I to reduce coal and oil consumption. There has been
- 4:13Speaker 1: another incident in which a plane struck another vehicle at
- 4:16Speaker 1: an airport, in this case at Toronto Pearson. The incident
- 4:20Speaker 1: happened Tuesday night, a couple of hours after the WestJet
- 4:23Speaker 1: plane got in from Mexico. The aircraft was being towed
- 4:26Speaker 1: at the time, so there was nobody on board when
- 4:28Speaker 1: the wing came into contact with a food truck. Nobody
- 4:31Speaker 1: was injured, and the extent of damage is unclear. The
- 4:36Speaker 1: small ball Milwaukee Brewers, playing in the smallest market in
- 4:40Speaker 1: the majors, are World Series champions for the first time.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Young ace Jacob Mizorowski threw five and two-thirds scoreless innings
- 4:47Speaker 1: of two-hit ball, and then the bullpen kept her locked
- 4:50Speaker 1: down as Milwaukee beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in
- 4:54Speaker 1: Game 5. And that's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
