- Najah: We treat trust like it only has one definition for everyone. But I don't think it does. Because when someone says trust me. Or I trust you. What does that actually mean? Does it mean I trust you'll tell me the truth. I trust you'll be faithful. I trust you'll protect my feelings. I trust you'll keep my secrets. I'll trust you'll communicate with me. I trust your judgment. I trust your intentions. I trust you'll show up when you say you will. I trust you'll never lie to me. I trust you'll verify with me before making assumptions. They're all called trusts. But those are completely different expectations. And if we never define which ones matter most to us. How does the other person know what they're being trusted to do? Maybe that's where a lot of relationships, friendships, and partnerships get in trouble. Not because either person didn't value trust. because they were using the same word. To describe completely different expectations. Maybe this is a conversation we should be having. Especially once the expectations become part of the relationship. Because an expectation that was never communicated is an expectation no one ever had a fair chance to meet. So maybe instead of only asking Can I trust you? We should also be asking. When you say trust What does that actually require from me?
