- 0:00Aloha. Monday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening today — and it's your last dry day for a few. Grab your outdoor plans now.
- 1:57Today stays mostly dry with light trade winds and pleasant conditions. Windward slopes may see a few showers through the morning, and leeward areas could pick up some scattered activity this afternoon from sea breezes, but rainfall stays light. Starting tonight, a low-pressure area moves in from the east, and by Tuesday the islands turn noticeably wetter — expect heaviest rain Tuesday through Wednesday, especially windward and inland. Strong winds pick up by midweek and hold through the weekend. If you're planning a hike or hitting the snorkel sites, today is the window.
- 2:26Ocean-wise, south-facing shores are seeing elevated swells — Oʻahu south is running 3.7 feet and Kauaʻi at 3.2. Both are small and swimmable. North shore is 3.4 feet, and Maui is calmer at 2.8. Big Island is nearly glass at 1.2 feet. It's a good day to get in the water on most shores.
- 2:40Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several road and trail closures in effect — Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and Lava Tube Bridge are all offline. The park is open, but check ahead if you're heading out there. Kīlauea is at advisory level.
- 2:52If you're traveling with kids this week, our new piece on the best family beaches by island walks through which spots have calm water, lifeguard coverage, and which ones to save for older swimmers. It also calls out seasonal cautions and beaches that aren't great with young ones in tow. With the wet weather rolling in Tuesday, getting a beach morning in today makes sense — and knowing which beaches work safest with kids takes the guesswork out of the day.
- 3:15For the rest of the week, winds ramp up midweek and rain settles in across windward and mauka areas Tuesday through Wednesday before the pattern breaks late week.
- 3:23Get your hiking and snorkeling done today. Full family beach guide is on the site. Talk to you in the morning.
