Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time here on the Gill Connections podcast.
- 0:03In an effort to increase communication, empathy and
- 0:06understanding around the country, we're going to be
- 0:08running a new episode every day interviewing a coach, a high
- 0:12school coach from every state, and yes, even you, Washington,
- 0:16DC with explaining how the state qualifying system works in their
- 0:21state. We'll be talking with a local
- 0:23state expert on how many classes, private versus public
- 0:27schools, what events and what is the process?
- 0:30Is it areas, districts, regionals, state meet?
- 0:34Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do
- 0:38a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,
- 0:41maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.
- 0:45And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
- 0:48meet or do you qualify for states?
- 0:50So check us out every day here at April and May of 2024 as we
- 0:54run through each state with a local state expert.
- 0:57So let's get started right now. All right here today as we're
- 1:11continuing on through the country, we're in South Dakota
- 1:14and I just want to encourage you if this is your first one, we're
- 1:17actually, you're kind of like in the middle of a 51 bonus episode
- 1:23content that we're doing here on the Guild Connections podcast.
- 1:25Highly encourage you to go back. We're doing one a day, April and
- 1:28May here in 2024. We started with Alabama.
- 1:31We're going to end with Wyoming. We do it all 50 States and even
- 1:34Washington, DC And so I just want to encourage you to check
- 1:37them all out because it is a learning experience, experience.
- 1:40And that's what we're going to do today.
- 1:41Help me welcome from Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School Coach
- 1:44Casey Shade Casey. How are you today, Sir?
- 1:46Hey, I'm good. It's an honor to be representing
- 1:48South Dakota in this. So yeah.
- 1:50So my name is Casey Shade and I coach at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
- 1:54This is my 10th year in coaching and my third year as the as the
- 1:58head coach. I also do a program there called
- 2:00the School Speed. We just work with different
- 2:03programs and everything like that but.
- 2:05Before that, I was at the University of South Dakota and
- 2:07actually went through South Dakota as an athlete, too, at
- 2:10Sioux Falls, Washington. So I'm excited to talk about
- 2:12this stuff today. That's awesome, man.
- 2:14What a great school and what a great state.
- 2:15And sounds like we got the right guy.
- 2:17You're you're South Dakota through and through here.
- 2:20Heck yeah. Heck yeah.
- 2:21I love it. All right, well, Casey, thank
- 2:23you so much, man. You know, I'm just so grateful
- 2:25this bonus series that we're doing doesn't happen if I don't
- 2:28have 51 servant leaders volunteering.
- 2:32So just so grateful. Just want to say thank you so
- 2:34much for for being here and helping us schooling us on South
- 2:37Dakota outdoor track and field. Thank you.
- 2:39It's an honor, All right. So some states, and we're
- 2:42learning not many, but some states will have a separate
- 2:47private school organization and separate private school state
- 2:50meet and a separate one for public.
- 2:52Most common, we're finding out everybody just is battling
- 2:55together towards a state meet title.
- 2:57What are we doing in South Dakota for public and private
- 3:00schools? We're we're all together.
- 3:03So I think the private, the private school would be really,
- 3:05really small if they decided to separate.
- 3:08If they were to do that, but Nope, we're we're all together.
- 3:10Doesn't matter if you're public or private.
- 3:12It's more just the, the size of enrollment that you have.
- 3:15Perfect. Yep, that's the most common
- 3:16we're finding. So let's move on to how we
- 3:19divide things up there in South Dakota, typically by enrollment
- 3:21as you mentioned, how many classes or divisions and what
- 3:24what do we call them? So we have three classes, so our
- 3:28smallest class is a Class B. And then we have Class A and my
- 3:31school like Sioux Falls Roosevelt is Class AA, those
- 3:34higher enrollment classes. And that that's really what it's
- 3:36determined by is enrollment depending where you're at.
- 3:40So you know our smaller towns in South Dakota pretty frequent,
- 3:43you know our Class B type of schools.
- 3:46Those class AS are kind of those smaller towns that are bigger
- 3:48towns like Sioux Falls, the different schools we have,
- 3:51Yankton Pier, Rapid City, We're all in the AA.
- 3:54I'm always fascinated, You know, it seems pretty standard to go
- 3:57A, AA, AAA, here we have B. And I was like, where are you
- 4:00going to go from there, man? Because, you know, you can't go
- 4:02C and if you go A, that means only two.
- 4:04So BA and AA. It's just always interesting how
- 4:06we call these things, you know? Oh.
- 4:09I feel confused. When you look at our football,
- 4:110. Sure.
- 4:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right.
- 4:13OK, Well, let's talk about. So we have three state
- 4:16championships, right? So three boys teams are working
- 4:19to earn a state title and three girls teams are going to work
- 4:22towards a state title. So how do we get there?
- 4:25All around the country, we call them divisionals, areas,
- 4:28regional sectionals, all these different names.
- 4:30What's the first round in South Dakota called?
- 4:33OK. So we actually do not have any
- 4:35more regional meets or any of that.
- 4:37So AA, we never really have before.
- 4:40It used to be an auto standard to get you in, which is like the
- 4:42average 8th place time of last so many state meets And there
- 4:45was a provisional. The other schools could get an
- 4:48auto, the B&A and then they would have their regional meets.
- 4:51But now we've just gone the top 24 entries.
- 4:55So it's not the top 24 marks of the the season, it's the top 24
- 4:59marks that are entered and we use athletic.net for all that
- 5:03and you can have a maximum of three per school.
- 5:06And then you can have one relay at the AA level.
- 5:09We don't have 2014 so we automatically get a relay in.
- 5:13But for those B and and AS they got to be in that top 24 to get
- 5:18their relays in and everything like that.
- 5:20So you're running your entire outdoor season schedule and
- 5:25we're we're accumulating the A descending order list and then
- 5:29presumably at some point whether it's a week before stayed or two
- 5:32weeks, we have to declare and the top 24 declarations get into
- 5:38the 100, the shot put the pole vault etcetera.
- 5:41And it's it's been really good, 'cause we did have some years
- 5:44where at least at the AA level, we noticed this, where where
- 5:47kids wouldn't reach that provisional mark and then we
- 5:49would have like the shot put would have 12 kids in it.
- 5:52And so this top 24 has just really cleaned it up for
- 5:55everybody. And it gets our it really gets
- 5:57the best athletes competing. Not to say those other classes
- 6:01with the regional meet, but you would get some kids in a region
- 6:04that would just be at a disadvantage.
- 6:06If they had a strong region but now we're we're assembling the
- 6:09top 24 field of who's ready to rock'n'roll and go out and
- 6:13compete. Yeah, we have a last chance meet
- 6:15usually the Thursday before the state meet and that gets really
- 6:19interesting because that top 24 can really you can shift.
- 6:23So you can you can be at a kid like in 100, especially in the
- 6:26200 and even the 800 a lot because a lot of those kids in
- 6:29the 16 and 32 are dropping down around the eight.
- 6:31We see some drastic change. In our rankings and everything
- 6:34like that. But it's been pretty cool
- 6:36because we can have a kid in the 400 that's ranked like 50th and
- 6:39with our relays and everything can jump up and and they get in
- 6:42and get that opportunity. We have a couple of states that
- 6:45do this descending order list. Some states are doing like to to
- 6:51to get on that list it has to be in certain meats because of you
- 6:54know you talk talk about wind gauge and you know automatic
- 6:57timing and such like that does South Dakota it's any meet can
- 7:01get on that list or do we have certain qualifying meets.
- 7:04Mostly it just, well, it just has to be a sanction meet.
- 7:07So a South Dakota sanction meet or we can be at a sanction meet
- 7:11outside of our state. In South Dakota, our springs are
- 7:15pretty brutal and so we like to chase warmer weather.
- 7:19We'll head down to Nebraska quite often.
- 7:20We go down there three times to get some warmer weathers or
- 7:23weather meets. It's got to be a 400 meter
- 7:25track, that type of stuff. We have gravitated to having to
- 7:29have automatic timing which has been really nice.
- 7:32It's more of just the argument of consistency, which I think is
- 7:35good especially in the 100 and 200 where it's it's not to say
- 7:39the the guy that works at the bank coming to hand held the one
- 7:42me you know and we got 30 mile per hour tailwind.
- 7:46It just makes it consistent all around.
- 7:48So then when we get to those rankings, it's, it's as fair as
- 7:51it possibly can be. I feel like we're not going to
- 7:53get into it, but I feel like there's a story of somebody that
- 7:55came from the bank to the time one of your meets once and
- 7:57you're like never again bank, man.
- 7:58We're not not having that again. It was always if you went to
- 8:02this certain meet you'd come out with APR, so it was somewhat
- 8:06beneficial when we go to it, but.
- 8:08Yeah. Well I love that you go to
- 8:10Nebraska to chase warm weather by the way that says a lot about
- 8:13South Dakota Springs. I I think it says enough.
- 8:16Well let's get into what kind of bridge towards the state meet
- 8:19itself. But you mentioned this last
- 8:21chance meet so this will bridges into the state meet.
- 8:24You said this last chance meet is on like Thursday.
- 8:27So talk to us how that fits into when is the state meet.
- 8:31Is it always in the same venue? Do all three classes have their
- 8:34state meet the same place? How many days is the state meet?
- 8:36Kind of bridge that last chance into state meet.
- 8:40Yep. So we have that last chance on a
- 8:42Thursday, and then our entries are declared that Saturday.
- 8:46And then it's always that last week of May is when we have it
- 8:50over the holiday. I was afraid your last chance
- 8:53meet was on Thursday and the state meet started Friday.
- 8:55That OK, so there is a week. OK, that's where I was really
- 8:57kind of like bridge that 'cause that seems we have that crazy.
- 9:00Get it? OK, now let's go to the state
- 9:02meet. Yep.
- 9:03So the state meet now, this will be our third year of doing this.
- 9:06We have shifted to a three day state meet.
- 9:09All classes are together at the same venue.
- 9:12We're in Sioux Falls at Howard Wood Field.
- 9:16Yep, there used to be a rotation of two years at in Sioux Falls
- 9:20at Howard Wood with one year at Rapid.
- 9:22Currently with all the classes together, they're trying to
- 9:25figure out if we can make the rapid.
- 9:28Track area work, the parking and everything gets pretty chaotic.
- 9:31It used to be we used to have a two day meet and our classes
- 9:36would be separated on day one. So B would be like a Howard
- 9:40Wood, Class A would be in Lenox, class AA would be in Brandon for
- 9:46the first day and then we all come together for like the
- 9:48Sprint finals and the other distance races and everything
- 9:52like that on Saturday. But.
- 9:54But I'll be honest, it's been a really, really cool experience
- 9:57that we've shifted to a three day because we've seen, you
- 10:01know, you get to see all the best track athletes in our state
- 10:04all in one spot and the stands are just packed full.
- 10:08And so the atmosphere is really cool and and and it's just a
- 10:12great event and the first day I walked in I didn't know what we
- 10:15were going to expect. It was my first year head
- 10:17coaching too. And that Thursday, I was like,
- 10:19wow. Like, typically it's low key.
- 10:21You come in, but now it's just like, wow, the buzz is here.
- 10:24So it's kind of just a real cool deal to have everybody together.
- 10:27I find it interesting how you used to do it, that you'd be all
- 10:30in your separate sites for the Friday and then come to get
- 10:33that's. I have not heard that.
- 10:34That's interesting. Now we're in a three day single
- 10:37venue state meet. When you say 3 day, do you mean
- 10:41like is Class B doing all of theirs?
- 10:43We're given a team title at the end of Thursday night and Friday
- 10:45night. Is Class A and Saturday's class
- 10:48AA? Or are we working towards all
- 10:50the prelims and such and maybe some finals, but on Saturday all
- 10:53three or all six state championships are given out?
- 10:57Yep. So it's all finalized with
- 10:59everybody on Saturday. So we external events, so a lot
- 11:03of our events on the first day are like. 100 hundred prelims, 4
- 11:07by 1 prelims. The 110 hurdle, 100 prelims.
- 11:11We do the four by eight, we do a Sprint medley, that type of
- 11:15stuff, and gravitate it. It's been nice because now we
- 11:17spread it, especially as the the old middle distance runner and
- 11:19me who did the 48 double and the four by eight 4x4.
- 11:22You're not so loaded on day one. It allows those kids to spread
- 11:25out. It was really cool, 'cause we
- 11:27just had Simeon Birnbaum come out of our state and.
- 11:31I felt like it really highlighted one of the best
- 11:34athletes in the country to have that three day meet and to
- 11:36spread out his workload of events as well.
- 11:39I like the I like 3 days, you know, we obviously do it in two
- 11:43days depending on how many classes, but I really like the
- 11:46championship Saturday. Everybody wins there.
- 11:48You know we all have 4 by fours at the end and we give out all
- 11:51these team trophies instead of like you know, Class A wins it
- 11:53on Thursday and that's great because it's still important.
- 11:55But I like the all team titles are winning on one day.
- 11:58That's really cool you guys. Very cool.
- 12:01You know, we we definitely know this that track and field is the
- 12:04most inclusive sport. Tall, short, big, small.
- 12:07There's some place on track and field for you to achieve
- 12:09success. We're learning that a lot of
- 12:11states are adding some kind of adaptive, unified wheelchair
- 12:14events to their state meet. Anything like that going on in
- 12:17South Dakota right now? Nothing currently in South
- 12:19Dakota at our state meet situation, but the unified stuff
- 12:22is really taking off at our Dakota Relays, which is the big
- 12:24invite that like North Dakota schools come down to, South
- 12:27Dakota schools come down to we've added a unified 4 by 1.
- 12:31We have Special Olympics 100 and we have, we have, we're getting
- 12:35wheelchair races too, depending if there's athletes that are
- 12:37interested. When we actually go down to
- 12:39Nebraska at Roosevelt, we've done a great job with our
- 12:42unified program with basketball and we're starting to do it with
- 12:45our track program a lot as we go down to Nebraska and participate
- 12:48in their unified divisions at their meets.
- 12:50So I think it's something that's coming and teams are building
- 12:53more interest in it. It was the first year we did it
- 12:55at our Dakota Relays. We participated.
- 12:58Von Home participated in it. So I think it's something that's
- 13:00coming and I could see in the future here being added to it as
- 13:04well, very cool. And I've been to the Dakota
- 13:06Relays a couple of times. That's a, that's a meet, that's
- 13:08a facility, I love that place and and boy it is Dakota.
- 13:12I mean that's a, you know, that's very a lot of pride right
- 13:14there in the Dakota Relays for that meet.
- 13:16That's awesome. So you have, you know, because
- 13:19we have three classes, we have 3/4 by 1 champions and three
- 13:25girls 4 by 1 champions. Some states, whether it's
- 13:28officially or unofficially, like maybe throughout coaches
- 13:30association we'll do a meet of champions where we gather the
- 13:34the state champions from each event and maybe second or third
- 13:36places and we air quotes here, Find the true state champion in
- 13:40each event, Anything like that. So no real meet it people have
- 13:44tried. It's really never taken off.
- 13:45But what we do is gold medal winner of all classes, so once.
- 13:50Our order goes B and then A and then AA of our events.
- 13:53So like let's say it is the 100. B runs, A runs, AA runs after AA
- 13:58is ran. Then they'll reward the gold
- 14:00medal go of all classes goes to this person.
- 14:03So maybe somebody in Class B ran 10/8 in the 100 and that was the
- 14:09fastest day at that time. They're the all around gold
- 14:11medal winner and that's for relays, field events, everybody.
- 14:14So that's pretty cool. Way cool.
- 14:17Especially I always think it gets really cool at like the
- 14:191600 time on the final day on a Saturday where it's all the
- 14:22distance kids is usually last event.
- 14:24And I feel like Class B sets that bar and now Class A is like
- 14:27and now I got to run faster than the Class AA is like no way I
- 14:30want to. I'm going to, I'm going to win
- 14:31it. But I want to get that gold
- 14:32medal around my neck too, you know?
- 14:34We started this series to create conversation amongst different
- 14:38States and state associations, create empathy amongst States
- 14:41and intrastate as well. That is super.
- 14:43We've not heard that. That is really cool.
- 14:46So they give, so you're a a Class A state champion shot put.
- 14:50But then they'll take those three and say, OK, well you get
- 14:52the the the bigger gold, I don't know, but yeah, they all get
- 14:55their gold medal, but they get a a special like you are the state
- 14:57champion 'cause you threw farther than anybody else.
- 15:01That's yeah, I can remember back in even and when I ran a high
- 15:04school, we won the four by eight my senior year and it was kind
- 15:07of a bummer because we were separated.
- 15:09But we pay attention to the other sites and see who had the
- 15:12faster times. So we rewarded the gold medal
- 15:15and they would announce those when we had the separate sites
- 15:17before on the final Saturday when we're all together.
- 15:20But now they can just do it right away, which makes it even
- 15:22cooler. Do they have an an?
- 15:24He keeps saying gold medal, but you know the the winner of that
- 15:27hundred also wins the gold medal first place.
- 15:29Is there a special name for this award or just is it a bigger
- 15:33award? Like a bigger like a Flavor flav
- 15:34clock trophy or something? It's a bit, it's a bit bigger,
- 15:38but it's just the gold medal of all classes.
- 15:41So they get their gold medal for winning B or A or AA, and then
- 15:45they get the gold medal of all classes.
- 15:46So really, they'll walk. If they're that person they walk
- 15:48off the stand with with two gold medals.
- 15:51Hey, that's cool because media champs are extremely hard to
- 15:55pull off or timing and things like that.
- 15:57This may be a way for, you know, there may be other states that
- 15:59are listening around going like, OK, wait a minute, That's at
- 16:01least a good compromise to have. That's cool.
- 16:03I love that. That's really good.
- 16:05OK, let's go through some of your events.
- 16:06You already kind of gave us a preview of an event that's not
- 16:09very common, so we'll get to there.
- 16:11Let's go through the different groupings.
- 16:13We know you're doing the 1-2, the four and the eight on the
- 16:17next two. Are you doing the 1632, the mile
- 16:20two mile, the fifteen 3000? What are you doing in those next
- 16:22two events? We keep it simple with just the
- 16:2516 and the 32. Perfect.
- 16:26That's the most common. You're you're in a good group.
- 16:28That's the most common. We're doing the 110 high hurdles
- 16:31and the 100 hurdles for boys and girls, we're doing the 300
- 16:34hurdles. Correct.
- 16:36We know you're doing 4 by 1 and 4 by 4.
- 16:38And if you've listened to all of these, you know my joke that's
- 16:40coming. Because if you're not doing the
- 16:42four by one and the four by four, you're not really doing
- 16:43track, and therefore you're not on this podcast.
- 16:45So we know you're doing 4 by 1, 4x4.
- 16:47You snuck in that. You're doing the four by 8.
- 16:49Yep. Any other relays?
- 16:51We got the four by two, four by two, and you mentioned a medley
- 16:56relay or something earlier too. Yes.
- 16:58So we have the Sprint medley of the 2248.
- 17:03So that's always that's, I mean it really comes down to the 800
- 17:06runner being really strong but that that that's a fun one too.
- 17:10And it used to be when we had it before, it used to be a prelim
- 17:13and a final or this last year we switch it to just a just a final
- 17:17on that first day Thursday. So what I really like about
- 17:21that, if you're a true just 400 runner, now you have another
- 17:24event. You got your open four and your
- 17:274 by 4, and now you can run the 400 in the medley.
- 17:30Or if you're just that, true 800 kid.
- 17:32Now you have the open 8, the four by 8:00 and then you can
- 17:35run the medley 8. So you have those 3, three
- 17:38events and and I like that we don't do that prelim anymore of
- 17:41that because we're now we're able to showcase those top 400
- 17:44kids, those top 800 kids like Sammy and Birnbaum would run the
- 17:48medley every year with that. So showcased him with that and
- 17:52everything too. So what, what are you calling
- 17:54you call it the Sprint Medley relay or what?
- 17:56What do you? Actually call it, yeah, we call
- 17:58it. We call it the Sprint Medley
- 17:59relay. I know some people the Sprint
- 18:01medley of. The 1124 right and everything
- 18:05like that, but no, we just do the 2248.
- 18:07Got it. Any other relays?
- 18:08Any distance medley, relay or anything?
- 18:10Nope, no. The only time we sneak in the
- 18:12distance medley relay is Dakota Relays added that one this last
- 18:15year. So that's kind of fun.
- 18:16Very cool. That Sprint medley relay, not
- 18:17very common. Only a handful of states.
- 18:19I love that. That's really cool.
- 18:21Let's go over to our field events.
- 18:22We're doing long jump and triple jump for boys and girls.
- 18:24Yes, we're doing shot put and discus, boys and girls.
- 18:27Yep. And we're doing pole vault and
- 18:28high jump for boys and girls. Yes, Any other javelin, hammer,
- 18:32multi, steeple, anything else? We are Chuck and the javelin.
- 18:36Chuck and the javelin. Maybe that's it just started As
- 18:40for AA, as a state event two years ago, basically when we
- 18:44shipped it to the three day meet, it was the first year the
- 18:47Javelin was a scored event for AA.
- 18:49This upcoming spring, it'll be a scored event for Class A and
- 18:53Class B as well. So that's what we're kind of
- 18:55working through is, is how do we fit these in?
- 18:58Because we're. Throw the javelin is kind of
- 19:01somewhat where we throw the discus and so that's something
- 19:04the schedule that's been worked out, but it's been a really,
- 19:06really cool event to have when we host meets.
- 19:09It's been really fun. Nobody has been stabbed yet, but
- 19:14it's been it. It's been a cool added event and
- 19:17it gives those athletic kids and just one more event to do.
- 19:21Absolutely love that. Very, very progressive from you
- 19:23guys. I love that very much.
- 19:25Some people we talked about, you know, an unofficial meet of
- 19:27champions. Some states will do unofficial
- 19:30state championship multis or hammer.
- 19:33You know, a week or so after the state meet.
- 19:35Anything like that? Nope, we don't.
- 19:37We don't touch the hammer or the multi for for up here at least.
- 19:42Yeah, up there. That's right.
- 19:44All right, Casey, before we move on to a couple of fun questions,
- 19:47anything that we missed Anything else you can think of that we
- 19:50didn't touch on or ask you, You double up your relay points you
- 19:54you only score 6 points. You the four by four goes off at
- 19:58midnight because that's the South Dakota tradition.
- 20:00Anything that we missed that we should know about South Dakota?
- 20:03No, we're pretty standardized on how we do the points, how we do
- 20:07the events. We just do the 108654321 relays
- 20:12and all individual events so it's pretty basic one.
- 20:16One thing I I did like that we changed that automatic timing
- 20:19you know and and that top 24. But we're kind of in South
- 20:21Dakota we're branching out. I mean this is our third year of
- 20:24the three day meet. Some people are totally anti
- 20:26against it. I'm for it, but maybe it's
- 20:28because my kids get to sleep in their own bed and we're here and
- 20:32if we're out in rapid, maybe I would change when I'm watching
- 20:35kids now for three or four days, so.
- 20:37That's a good point. All right, Casey, help us settle
- 20:41an argument, a debate, if you will, at least on your bus rides
- 20:45to the track meets. What's your culture there?
- 20:47Do we qualify for state? Do we qualify for the state
- 20:50meet? Are we are we going to states?
- 20:52What are we? What are we saying here?
- 20:53Help us out. We say we qualified for state.
- 20:56And so a lot of those conversation, you know, kids
- 20:59will ask me, hey, is this the time that'll get me qualified
- 21:01for state, you know, and that type of thing?
- 21:02Or when those kids are outside of the top 24 and they're not
- 21:06sure and we're going to enter because we'll always enter three
- 21:08kids, no matter if they're ranked 120th or they're, they're
- 21:11in the top 24. And so on that Saturday when I
- 21:14see they make it in, I call, I call them and I say, hey state.
- 21:19That's a good way of asking that question is when you say it to a
- 21:21kid, what are you saying? I.
- 21:23You made it to state kid there. Joey, A good job.
- 21:25All right. I love that.
- 21:26Good. All right, man.
- 21:27Casey, you've done a great job. You've really, I love how you
- 21:30said you're pretty straightforward and yet you have
- 21:32the javelin, the Sprint medley. Those aren't straightforward
- 21:35things. That's very unique.
- 21:36I love it. I love it.
- 21:36I love it. So you've been great.
- 21:38We're so appreciative and grateful for you.
- 21:40So you win the magic wand. If you could change one and only
- 21:43one thing my friend in outdoor track and field there.
- 21:47For South Dakota at an event, take away an event, Go to a four
- 21:51day meet. I don't know, you tell me what
- 21:53do you think? What would be your opinion to
- 21:54help make track and field just a little bit better there in South
- 21:57Dakota Oh man I would say my one thing and and I'm I'm both I'm
- 22:02I'm against it both ways and I'm for it is.
- 22:05I'm born, yeah, but there's part of me that goes, I'd love it if
- 22:10it could be more than just three kids per school.
- 22:13Because what happens if you do have that year where you have 4
- 22:16kids in the top eight in an event, let's say it's let's say
- 22:20the hurdlers. You got a great hurdler group
- 22:22and now you got to tell that one kid, hey sorry, you know you
- 22:27would place and state but now I, you know, we can find other
- 22:31homes for them with all our relays and everything like that.
- 22:33That's the one advantage of that.
- 22:34But it is one of those points where where we've had years and
- 22:37Sioux Falls Lincoln has had years in especially the distance
- 22:40events or the 400 or the 8 where where we could we could qualify
- 22:44five or six kids. But I also understand from the
- 22:46standpoint too is, is we wanted opportunities and this gives you
- 22:51know some of those smaller schools that opportunity as
- 22:54well. Whereas maybe at the bigger
- 22:55schools in AA, the bigger schools in A and the bigger
- 22:57schools in B would then gain maybe too much of an advantage
- 23:01against the competition as well. Well, if you've been following
- 23:03along in our state series, you know that that is the number one
- 23:07concern easily amongst our high school coaches is how do we get
- 23:11the best athletes to the state meet, Whether that means the the
- 23:144th Miller, you know, if you're only doing 3:00, what if you
- 23:17have that fourth shot putter? It's it's a little easier with a
- 23:19half mile or even a sprinter because of relays and stuff.
- 23:23That fourth shot putter, I hope you can throw the discus and
- 23:25that's not necessarily a transferable skill there.
- 23:27By the way, maybe we have javelin again, not.
- 23:30That transferable, but yeah that's a tough one that's that's
- 23:33easily the number one magic wand wish is something to do with how
- 23:37do we get our best athletes at the state meet and let them
- 23:39battle it out there so. Casey, thank you so much.
- 23:43Man. This has been awesome.
- 23:45We are traveling from Alabama all the way to Wyoming.
- 23:47And I tell you what, we are learning a ton.
- 23:49It was so cool to learn about South Dakota.
- 23:51I love the Sprint medley. I love the love uniqueness with
- 23:53relays in there. 5 relays. That's a big.
- 23:55That's a big deal, man. And of course, my heart as you
- 23:58know as a manufacturer here at Gill love that you're doing the
- 24:00javelin. Thank you very much for doing
- 24:02that. I thank you for being here today
- 24:04and just teaching us all about South Dakota.
- 24:06Man, this is really good. Thank you very much.
- 24:08Hey, greatly appreciated. Now I'm going to go be a true S
- 24:10Dakotan and go deer hunting this weekend.
- 24:13Exactly, exactly. Casey, thank you so much.
- 24:16All right. Thank you.
