- 0:22SPEAKER_00: It's tempting as a writer to think that everybody is your audience, but the reality is your message is not for everyone.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a weird paradox, but it's true.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: The more you focus on a specific type of person, the more people will be able to relate to it.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: So when you narrow down your audience, it gives you three specific things.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Number one, it gives you clarity.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: When you understand who you're writing for, your writing life gets a lot easier and more fun because you know the problems that you're solving for your audience, and you also know what things you can't ignore in your writing.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Your material should attract the right people and repel the wrong people.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Number two, when you get clear on your audience, it gives you intensity.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And the reason is because when you know and understand your audience, you don't have to guess what to write about.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: This clarity will give you an intensity of focus because you know what you're trying to accomplish.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: In other words, when you're clear on who you're writing for, you get more excited about what you're doing.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And then finally, number three, getting clear on your audience gives you great feedback.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: When you start to write for a specific audience, you get feedback from people who can help you refine your audience's needs and interests.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: For example, if you're writing for educators, it doesn't really help to get feedback from airplane mechanics or vice versa.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So when you know that audience and who you're writing for specifically, it helps you to get the right kind of feedback from the right people, which can be immensely helpful.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Just like getting the wrong kind of feedback from the wrong people can actually be really detrimental.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So here's the bottom line.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: If you're trying to write for everybody, it's kind of like going down a wide river that has no momentum at all.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: You're just kind of sauntering away with no excitement and no speed.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: But when you decide to write for a specific audience, it's kind of like going down the rapids where the banks are close together.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It's really exciting.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: You're going to go a lot faster, and the ride is going to be so much more fun.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Write down the specific audience that you're writing for.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: What are they like?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: What do they need?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And what kinds of problems could you be solving for them?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: I want to take a moment to thank today's sponsor, Writers Talk.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Did you know that 81% of people say they want to write a book, but only 5% of people actually follow through with it?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Well, there's a lot of reasons people never reach their writing dreams, but two of the main ones are that people don't know how to get started and they don't have a supportive community.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: If that describes you, you'll love Writers Talk, a brand new app for writers.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: When you join, you get immediate access to hundreds of instructional videos from authors, editors, screenwriters, publishers, and more, including a training video by yours truly.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Best of all, Writers Talk includes a community where you can collaborate with other authors and upload your stories to the library for ratings and reviews from other writers just like you.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: The app is only$4.99 a month, which is just the price of a coffee.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: You can check it out by going to writerstalk.app or by searching for Writers Talk on the App Store or Google Play.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Again, that's writerstalk.app.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: As always, thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
