- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This
- 0:33is your host, Adam Grant. If you have a comment, send it
- 0:37to me Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net and follow us on Twitter at
- 0:43Radio Detectives. Well, this is the start of our listener support campaign,
- 0:48and over the years, I'm thankful to everyone who has really supported the show
- 0:53because they've made it possible for us to continue to do this. When we
- 0:58first started, expenses were a lot lower in some ways, but over the
- 1:02years some of these have increased. One thing, of course, is hosting.
- 1:06With the sheer number of episodes that we host, I actually had to
- 1:11start renting a server and to protect us from malware infection that could put the
- 1:17show's integrity and risk. We have a virus skinning service and there have been
- 1:25a few little pieces of hardware we've purchased over the past a year or so,
- 1:29and so listener contributions helped to defer these expenses, as well as just
- 1:34amount of time spent producing, recording, listening, researching, and so many
- 1:40things which we do here in pursuit of this passion for the Great Detectives of
- 1:46Old Time Radio. And it really builds towards that goal of being able to
- 1:52focus on those things that I'm most passionate about. So thank you so much
- 1:56for your support, very briefly during the listener support Kim Paint in appreciation of
- 2:02our listeners throughout the year. Any donations of seven dollars or more will send
- 2:07access to the premium SiGe and that still goes. But for a donation of
- 2:10twenty dollars or more, we'll send your choice of one of my superhero comedies
- 2:16novels Slime Incorporated, All I Needed to Know I Learned from Colombo, or
- 2:21what made the Golden Aids Shine, And in addition to that, we'll send
- 2:24you an additional thank you gift. Among the options we have at the twenty
- 2:30dollars level, the Colonial radio feater Father Brown as sets, they're re producing
- 2:37them, and they've released the adaptations of all the stories in the Innocence of
- 2:43Father Brown in three volumes, So we'll send your choice of volume one,
- 2:46Volume two, or volume three for a donation of twenty dollars or more.
- 2:51At the one hundred dollars level, if you are in the US, we'll

- 3:13hundred dollars or more. And we have a full list of items ebooks,

- 5:25hours? I'm still crying. Or mister Temple, you're losing your charm.
- 5:28I think she wants to go home. You're definitely losing your charm. I'd
- 5:31like to take her home. Well, she lost her charm too, Holy,

- 5:48didn't want to turn a loose because if she can't find her way home,
- 5:50there's no telling what will happen to him. So what are you gonna do?
- 5:53Turn a loose? But you just said that you know where you come
- 5:56in. We'll follow her in your heck, see where she goes. We
- 6:00can keep her out of trouble. Oh that I should live to see today
- 6:01when the Robin would have modern crime? Is nice made to remember the saying
- 6:05Louise do under whether dumb animals what she would have others do unto you?
- 6:10Besides, she's cute. Yeah, huh, what kind issue speakonese? I

- 6:43We've been following up for over an hour. You know, any better way
- 6:46to spend your money, mister Temple than giving it to meat o hand.
- 6:47I can think of a couple. Say Minerva's turning in at that gate.
- 6:51Yeah, she'd little shock she picks. I bet it doesn't have over forty
- 6:55rooms. You think she really lives there is? You're in dreaming? I
- 6:58would soon find out. Louis turning the driveway in part, I'll take her
- 7:01up to the house. If she does belong here, there will no doubtless
- 7:04be a reward. And if there is no doubtless now ruling Louis, your
- 7:09cutters already have a leader. So by the way, you can't lose.
- 7:12I'm not making out so awful. Good on it, mister Temple. Only
- 7:14one fair, only one tipper more than all is the profit? Why louis

- 7:57modesty was one of your outstanding characteristic Yes, you seem to know a lot
- 8:01about me, doesn't everybody? If you've pardoned in liberty, I'll pardon the
- 8:05levity, but not the evasion it is. I asked you why Madam should
- 8:07be glad that I have come? Is it because of Minerva? The this
- 8:15you mean? Ningtoy? Do? I? I guess I do. I
- 8:18should have known being toy Naturally Madam will be delighted about the dog. But
- 8:22what I was particularly referring to were the jewels? Have you got them?

- 10:58Now we'll somebody please tell me what's going on around here? As if you
- 11:01don't, as if I don't. Just who are you any way? Young
- 11:05feller? Simon Templar? And you you don't know who I am? Should

- 11:18Nuts in boats remagnufacture them? You heard of Allardyce? Nut? Yes,
- 11:22aren't they? What's it? The whole family? Big? Pardon?
- 11:24Skip it our sogod. If it's Allardyce, it's nut, That's what I

- 12:37fact, I'm not exactly feeling myself at the moment, So don't be throu

- 13:37Tempton sat Yeah, Stevie, you wait a minute. May not be him
- 13:43at all? I know the Saint of blood. You don't. It's worth
- 13:48a chance because if you're the real saint, you want me can do business?
- 13:52What's sort of business, studie? Well, I read a lot of
- 13:54books about the tech disase. Yes, I got that. Well, we
- 13:56want to make a good partnership, you and me. You'll help me latch
- 14:01out of the ice and we'll split the reward the ice fifty grandworth? And
- 14:05that ain't peenis Stevie? You suppose you tell me about this jewelry? Just
- 14:11when was it taken? You don't know? No, you're not the saint.
- 14:16I don't believe me, Stevie. The Saint doesn't know everything. Might
- 14:18you come here? Return Meantory? You know you trying to kill you?
- 14:24Look, mister, I happen to know you could return meantoy. See what
- 14:28do you mean? I couldn't never mind? But I know if you don't
- 14:33believe me, asked Louis. I thought the name was Minifie is such a
- 14:35help. Stevie. Why do you say I couldn't return Maintoy. I'm not

- 14:58Come on, Stevie, come in. Excuse me, madam. Mister Templer
- 15:13is here again with the gardener's boy. The gardener's boy. Yes, you
- 15:18can't bring that urchin into the house. Maybe him, but he has Shall
- 15:22I show them out? No show them in. I'll sell him myself.
- 15:26You may come in, mister Temple. Thank you, Jeeves Fitch, Sir,
- 15:31I stand connected well hello again, missus Halla Dow. Really, mister
- 15:35Temper, this is impossible bringing in that Oh heavens he's the face of the
- 15:39window. Who is just a check? Oh I should have recognized him at
- 15:43the time. Oh, mister Temple, You're wonderful, positively wonderful. The
- 15:48first thing time down the paper. I know not whatsoever, simply none.
- 15:52You're an amazing man, is it down? No? Thanks? Yeah,
- 15:56thanks, if you don't mind, we'd like to see men. Why I
- 16:02forgot to say goodbye to her? Very well? Me? So's another me?
- 16:07Now where is that animal? She was here right just a moment ago?
- 16:11Me me? You call her? Did you see him? Sorry?
- 16:15No, I thought you was in here. Well she's not. Don't tell
- 16:18me. She disappeared again. It was vanished. It was sir, my
- 16:22poor, it's a babe. God. Well mister, now why you got
- 16:26to sing? Say Stevie? I am speechless. Ye oh, hello Louis,
- 16:45mister TEMpl I'll come your eyes from the door. They don't have no
- 16:48butler. He's not around strange, no dog, no butler. Well what
- 16:52do you want, Louis? I just come to see what's keeping here?
- 16:53This time my Nie is getting busy going round and round me until he's missing
- 16:57again. We're looking for it. It's a big house. She's a little
- 17:00dog. Why don't you just forget the whole thing? Because Louis doesn't make
- 17:03sense. She ought to come when we call her at least back. Well,
- 17:07what do I do? Go? Take another nap. No, maybe,
- 17:10Louise, what is it? Can killed that you are the same that
- 17:15brings all this up? Yeah? Then tuns like a whisper. This is
- 17:19top schah in the garage. What's he doing giving her a shampoo? No?
- 17:26Shaving her? You're crazy? Well let's go get her. Come on,
- 17:30Louise. Oh no, thanks, mister Temple, You and the kid
- 17:32go me. I'm going back to the hat for another nap. I can
- 17:34dream nightmares that make better sense than this solo. That's Tevie. When we
- 17:52get near the garage, let's be quiet. We don't want to fish to
- 17:55hears. Oh what's honest, look all over the ground, can't find it.
- 18:00That's all right, it's Stevie's founder. Your butler has a remicarage.
- 18:03But I just saw him go back to the house. Oh with mantoy.
- 18:07No, why do you take her to the garage? I guess to improve
- 18:11her appearance? What? Oh, come on, we can soon hide out,
- 18:17Ernice. What do you know about Joe Butler? Anyway, I'm right,
- 18:21it's only been with us a couple of weeks. Huh what sort of
- 18:23references did he have? I don't know. That's que that and he engaged
- 18:26him. Yeah, I will. Now I would like to ask you some
- 18:30questions. I'm still not satisfied in spite of money. Look, fish has
- 18:33the door, not me? I know. Hey, wait a minute,
- 18:37what is this? I say? Courting by that bush? Can that be
- 18:41meantoy? Bye? Gosh is and she's stripped clean, she's in shave.
- 18:47She looks like a damn suck literally meantoy. Just sit stace shivering. I
- 18:52think she's embarrassed. I'll get her, can I maing toy cold? Well,
- 18:57don't worry, I'll buy your mink if it is. She comes.
- 19:02I thought that would do what it works every time. Be careful, don't
- 19:19drop it. I don't worry. I shall garden thing so with my life.
- 19:25Well, come on, what's the matter. My legs are giving out
- 19:27again? Oh, she'll look out of condition. I guess have you found
- 19:38my treasure? Yes? Mother, we found. Oh that's wonderful. Give
- 19:41it a mother template? Yeah, him, thank you. It seems Joe
- 19:47Butler is a frustrated papa where his father, the templary, wants to talk
- 19:51to him about he's in the back study. But I don't understand that makes
- 19:53it unanimous. Look after your mother and if she's had quite a shock.
- 19:56Meanwhile, I'll go see if your father can help explain why Mantoy has been
- 20:00forced to become a strip teazer. Don't bother me, Temper, don't botherw
- 20:14me. I've got enough on my mind. Some new gams away every penny
- 20:17I give him. A wife would charge accounts away, even pennies I don't
- 20:19give her. Believe me, young man, anybody ever tells you what's a
- 20:22picnic being a millionaire? Don't you listen? Tig it for me before you
- 20:26make a million, just be sure you can avoid it. How am I
- 20:27gonna know of that? But about maintad Last night, the dog is kidnapped,
- 20:30the dog napp or whatever you've caught her. The wife throws such a
- 20:33tizzy it takes three pills to get me to sleep. Sporning the wife.
- 20:37Jews are gone, not a tizzy. Policemen, insurance adjusters, and now
- 20:41you look. I don't care if the dog has been plc. I don't
- 20:44care. I've got enough on mama. Maybe it all ties together. The
- 20:47dog is stolen. The jewels and stuff I can add two and two,
- 20:49Templar. I don't need your masterminding the dog was stolen first, so the
- 20:52thief could break in later without the dog barking. I think I couldn't figure
- 20:56that out. Uh huh, I think you could. And it's possible of
- 20:59peace, so too. Yeah, what's it? I have a hunts the
- 21:02robberry with the work of some member of this household, and the door napping
- 21:04was just a red herring to throw you off the tractor, to make you
- 21:07think just what you did. Think that but an outside rather than an inside
- 21:11job. Get out of here, temperate, gets out of here before I
- 21:15throw you. I just like to ask you about fish. Shave find Butler
- 21:18excellent one peculiarity, that's all likes to shave dog. So what we can't
- 21:21all be perfect? Now, get out of here, template before I having
- 21:23shaved you. And it may be closer than you like. Oh hello,
- 21:41Lan, anything from father? Yeah? Yeah, Lendy has a temper.
- 21:47Oh he's one of those. So if I want to learn about fish,
- 21:51I will have to learn it from fish himself. The only trouble is I
- 21:53can't find a kitchen. Is there a map of this place anyway? It's
- 21:56down this way. I'll take you. I want to talk to you anyway.
- 22:02Thanks, So you don't have signposts. How's your mother sniffing, smelling
- 22:07sauce, handling thinking a better than mother? Just keep her away from mirror
- 22:11and she'll be all right. But temporary, I said, I want to
- 22:14talk to you. I'm talking. I want to talk about you, my
- 22:18favorite subject. It's all very well. You're pretending you want to help,
- 22:22but how do we know? We almost fare My legs are giving out again,
- 22:25and I'm right in here, and take us in the kitchen to the
- 22:27mupper's memory fish fish no brother calling him most he can't hear you? But
- 22:36what's behind that table? Mm? Is he dead? Extremely? Please deal?
- 22:55I can't talk now. I'm sort of set u up. Men to
- 23:00Oh look, I'm trying to tell you somewhere and man, templar. He's
- 23:03getting ideas. I don't like it. He's been swooping around here. The
- 23:07first thing we know, Well, all we have to do is to be
- 23:08nice to him. Nice to him. Confounded Isabelle, I'm going to may
- 23:12I come in. No, Jemper, I thought I told you to get
- 23:17the placers out of this house. Oh is that what you told me?
- 23:18I've been trying to figure it out, but you were so windcoherent. Now
- 23:22see, if you want me to go, I'll be glad to. But
- 23:22I thought I'm going to tell you about your butler first. Yes, yes,
- 23:26I know you think he's a thief. Very well, i'll have the
- 23:27Please they're wrong, mister added ice. I don't think he's a thief.
- 23:30He's been cleared. It's a hard wedding. But somebody murdered her. Ernest
- 23:36is calling the police. Now, yeah we were knife Oh darn good.
- 23:40Butler's are so scarce these days. Ah, Jonifer is the templar. What's
- 23:45happened to Joys? Mike? He's fainted? Oh what will we do?
- 23:49Get me some water? Kill it yourself. I can't wait, God,
- 23:52wait, but you can't leave me now, got to that may be another
- 23:56med o come back whitch. Oh no, he's so say Oh, dear
- 24:21Louie, what now, mister Temple, have you seen Stevie? If my
- 24:25daughter is gonna be a murder If we don't, there's gonna be a murder,
- 24:26Stevie. Yeah, I'm glad to hear it. You know what that
- 24:30kid done for? He scrambled the wires in the engine when I was snoozing.
- 24:33That's why we wouldn't stop before his detective and Louis we were possible suspects,
- 24:36and he wanted to four a log get away. Well it wasn't that
- 24:38cue, And I'm not joking. His life is advanger. I'm not surprised.
- 24:41If I can't find Stevie, I'll have to find an armist. Who's
- 24:44he? Idia Son? I wonder if he's the one drove away just now
- 24:48thrown away? Did something? Yeah? Yeah, car just went down there
- 24:49on the drive. Has you got your wires scramble? Yeah? All right,
- 24:53Louie, let's go dis way. That's all I know. And you
- 25:10don't know Stevie was in the car. I don't know who was in the
- 25:12car. I didn't see he must be the only thing that makes sense now
- 25:18what the road branch is? Three ways? Which way do we go?
- 25:22Oh? Oh, there we are. They went that way to the left.
- 25:25Oh do you know there's fresh tire tracks? The others are road?
- 25:27Oh yeah, and step on it? Leui. Okay, we then your
- 25:32ears? Here we go. But I would still like to know what's going
- 25:37on. Louie. Look out for that sun. How's your eyes? Your
- 25:40payment for dug way? Who we go? Got your eyes? Open as
- 25:48the tap one. Yeah, yeah, we made it. Oh good that
- 25:52I can open mind, Louis, Louie, is that the car you saw
- 26:11coming out of Aladizers? Looks like that's good? But I hope we're not
- 26:14too late. Uh, nobody in it? Now there's a path into the
- 26:23woods. Come on. Yeah, oh yah, Louis right through here.
- 26:27I'm afraid to call the kids, I said, I'd still like to know
- 26:30what's going on. Well as I see it, Louis, Ernest ran up
- 26:34a gambling dens Papa wouldn't pay off for him. Oh and anyway, Papa
- 26:38was griping about Ernest gambling. Ernest, I think its Aladiz Junior. Yeah,
- 26:42that's right. Ernest had to get money, so he drove me to
- 26:47all away from home and put her out of the car. Then he swiped
- 26:49the family jewels and a missing dog made it look like an outside job.
- 26:53Smart guy, Junior. What makes you think he's gonna knock off the kid?
- 26:57So let he knock off the butler. Oh yeah, you know it
- 27:00was honest which knocked off the butler because when I told Alidye he fainted and
- 27:04he didn't faint out a great feeling for the butler, fella, don't even
- 27:07with him. A couple of weeks he fainted because he knew his son was
- 27:11gilly with the robbery, and he realized his son was also a murderer.
- 27:15Oh, would you come fast? Right? For sure? I'm all right,
- 27:19but Ernest don't feel so good, mister Temple. Look, Ernest is
- 27:23out cold. Yeah, you know something Ernie should have his mouth washed out
- 27:27with. So he doesn't tell the two. What do you mean? Well,
- 27:32last night I seen him driving away with ming Troy, and when I
- 27:36asked where he was taking her, he says, it's a big secret.
- 27:40Spies have tattooed a secret message on her skin, and he found out,
- 27:45and he's taken her to the FBI. And I mustn't tell nobody because it's
- 27:49FBI top secret. I see, I'll find out now. Who's just trying
- 27:53to shut me off? I gotta remember that next time my nephew gets to
- 27:57my hair. FBI popsy, Hey, Louis, Then that explains the shaving.
- 28:02Huh. The butler must have overheard is telling this young man about the
- 28:06secret message on Milty, and he figured if it was true, the dog
- 28:10would be worth money. So when the message sure when the butler shaves the
- 28:12pooch, Ernest gets whir and the butler is wise, so he shuts the
- 28:15butler up. Hey, trying to shut me up too. He shit,
- 28:19we were going to meet it up behind man out here. Instead he gets
- 28:23me in and then it goes out at night. And and what happened?
- 28:26Judah judo. Sure my father was in the marines. He taught me Ernest
- 28:33is waking up. And you were worried about the kid, mister Templar,
- 28:37like I told you, When then little Hyaenus is around, or you're gotta
- 28:41protect this yourself. Mister Templer, you are gonna teach you some fun as
- 28:45a matter of factually, assume first you think you guys aren't like this.
- 28:52Let's let's talk this over. You see, love the important part of this.
- 28:56So I just pulled that real hard. Truly. Hell, you are
- 29:11the listening to another transcribed adventure of the Saint, the robin Hood of modern
- 29:17crime. Oh here is our star, very Sullivan, Ladies and gentlemen.
- 29:21A long time ago it was written that men shall not live by bread alone.
- 29:26In this often coded line from the Bible, red is merely a symbol
- 29:29of all material Thaniels. And although we in America have the greatest material advantages
- 29:33in the world, they are not enough to bring us complete happiness. We
- 29:37must find out happiness in our spiritual as well as our material lives, in
- 29:41faith as well as bread. In America, one of our most precious heritages
- 29:47is the right to worship as we please, to know the spiritual pleasures of
- 29:51our churches and synagogues. The doors of your places of worship stand open to
- 29:56you, and your religious leaders will welcome you to their services also offer you
- 30:00personal and family guidance and the opportunity to become a firm part of your community.
- 30:06The more churches and synagogues, that community and the families within it can
- 30:10find stability, and as an individual, you can find the peace that only
- 30:14religion can bring. Thus, the religious organizations of America invite you to find
- 30:18yourself through faith and come to church this week. This is very seliv in
- 30:25inviting you to join us again next week at the same time for another exciting
- 30:29adventure of the Saint. Good Night the Night Script of the Saint was written
- 30:59by f Scene. In the cast, you heard Myral marrish at Missus Allardyce
- 31:03and Tom Tully as her husband. Lamon Johnson was their son. Ernest ted
- 31:08Osburn was the butler. Jeffrey Silver with Steviee and Mary Dodkin with Louis.
- 31:12The music was composed and conducted by VN. Dexter. The Saints, based
- 31:18on characters created by Leslie Choteris, is a James L. Safier production and
- 31:22is directed by Helen mack All. Youse. Saint fans will be glad to
- 31:26know that the Saint comic books so Ron Slam and all used say. Your
- 31:30announcer is Don Stanley. Three times mean good Times on NVC, and the
- 31:41chimes are anticipating the hillarious addicts of Bob Hope and Gaucho Marx. Hope returns
- 31:45to the air with more laughs on Tuesday, October third. Gacho Marx brings
- 31:49this rid off his quiz you Bet Your Life to the air on Wednesday,
- 31:53October fourth. So that's Bob Hope October third, Gaucho Marx October three times,
- 32:02good time, welcome back. You know there are lines you have to
- 32:15find problematic if you're a actor filling in for a beloved star of a series,
- 32:22and one of those is I'm not exactly feeling myself at any rate.
- 32:28I do hope that the Saint tips generously for all the time that Louis has
- 32:34spent, because he is right, the only negative of having the Saint there
- 32:38is only one tip. So I hope people weren't just like flat tipping,
- 32:43because yeah, that could definitely be problematic. The after show commercial was actually
- 32:47incorrect. The Saint would not return the next week. The series would actually
- 32:53go on hiatus for four weeks and be replaced by the Fell Harris and Alice
- 32:58Face Show in return on October twenty fourth. And I actually edited the Wikipedia
- 33:04inspractory one of them because it indicated that or implied that there were decisions to
- 33:10make changes to the show, and that they changed to Barry Sullivan and he
- 33:16didn't work out, and so they brought Vincent Price back. Oliver, listening
- 33:21to the program, it's clear that Vince that Barry Sullivan was only a stopgap
- 33:27measure. No matter how well he did, he was not going to be
- 33:30a permanent replacement for the Saint, and Vincent Price would return to the Rule
- 33:37and remain there for eight months until he believe it for good. But that's
- 33:40another story for another day. Now, we turned to some listener comments and
- 33:46feedback. Kate comments, great choice, loving the characters in this one,
- 33:52and this is from the Horrible Hamburger I should say, and Vow says,
- 33:57I love this episode. First of all, some cracking one liners. He
- 34:01got tired of waiting, terribly tired, Louie, he got dead. It's
- 34:07not bad either, but it looks married. Teddy is great too. Thanks
- 34:13Vow, glad you enjoyed the episode. And then we receive a helpful email
- 34:16from Scott and Pensacola. He says that I'm currently a few weeks behind,
- 34:22but I heard you read a letter about the Saint TV show. I don't
- 34:25know if you talked about it since, but I watch it on MeTV Sunday
- 34:30nights at midnight. Just an FYI. Well, thanks so much for sharing
- 34:36Scott. MeTV, that's MeTV does a lot of nostalgic television shows, and
- 34:46certainly if you're curious about seeing the Saint might make sense to set your DVRs
- 34:53or stay up to midnight and watch it if you get a MeTV a translation
- 35:00in your area, because outside of that, the only ways to see the
- 35:04Saint TV show are to buy the DVDs, which are out of print or
- 35:08very expensive, or you can purchase them for streaming on Amazon, but it's
- 35:15a dollar ninety nine an episode, which is a little bit pricey. So
- 35:19thanks so much for the tip on me TV. All right, well,
- 35:22that will do it for today. I do want to encourage you to support
