- 1:47Speaker 3: Adam and Eve Previously in our story, we witnessed the
- 1:53Speaker 3: creation of the universe. Out of chaos and nothingness, God
- 1:58Speaker 3: made everything. He spoke light and life into existence. The
- 2:03Speaker 3: glory of the skies, the galaxies, and the creatures of
- 2:07Speaker 3: the earth were made by God and declared to be good. Now,
- 2:12Speaker 3: we will learn more about the creation of man and woman,
- 2:16Speaker 3: made in the image of God, inspired by the book
- 2:20Speaker 3: of Genesis.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:24Speaker 2: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous episode, we
- 2:27Speaker 2: heard about the grand unfolding of God's act of creation,
- 2:31Speaker 2: night and day, earth, sky and seas, animals, plants, moon
- 2:35Speaker 2: and stars, and humanity. Today we take a microscope to
- 2:40Speaker 2: the pinnacle of God's creation, man and woman, His image bearers.
- 2:45Speaker 2: This is the story of the very first humans. As
- 2:49Speaker 2: you listen today, pay close attention to how God creates man,
- 2:53Speaker 2: how he stands apart from the rest of creation. Notice
- 2:57Speaker 2: the great care God takes not only in forming man,
- 3:01Speaker 2: but in providing for him in every imaginable way, including
- 3:05Speaker 2: a suitable companion, one that was perfectly made for him.
- 3:10Speaker 2: This isn't just the dawn of humanity, but the dawn
- 3:13Speaker 2: of marriage. Listen for what this passage teaches about the
- 3:16Speaker 2: design of marriage and the designer of marriage. Finally, you'll
- 3:22Speaker 2: encounter a choice in today's story, a choice that God
- 3:25Speaker 2: gives because He is not interested in forced worship, compulsory obedience,
- 3:30Speaker 2: or artificial, superficial love. This story reveals God's heart to you,
- 3:36Speaker 2: His care for you, His love for you. It's a
- 3:40Speaker 2: story about his desire for you to be fulfilled by
- 3:43Speaker 2: him and in him and for you to choose a
- 3:46Speaker 2: relationship of trust with him. So come with me and
- 3:50Speaker 2: let's take a look in Eden at the story of
- 3:53Speaker 2: Adam and Eve and the perfect garden God gave them.
- 3:59Speaker 3: The world was new and its refreshing mist was covering
- 4:03Speaker 3: the land. Streams and rivers flowed from the ground. giving
- 4:07Speaker 3: life to all plants and living creatures. Among the quiet
- 4:12Speaker 3: and new earth God was at work. Personally and intricately,
- 4:17Speaker 3: God formed a man from the dust, as a potter
- 4:20Speaker 3: does with clay. Then he breathed life into him. God
- 4:25Speaker 3: named him and knew him. His name was Adam. God
- 4:29Speaker 3: made a dwelling place for Adam in a garden called Eden,
- 4:34Speaker 3: He placed Adam there, and it was filled with every
- 4:37Speaker 3: tree that is pleasant and good for food. In this garden,
- 4:41Speaker 3: man's relationship with God began, and with that relationship a
- 4:46Speaker 3: choice of free will. There were two trees in the garden.
- 4:50Speaker 3: One was the tree of life. The other was the
- 4:54Speaker 3: tree of knowledge of good and evil. God commissioned Adam, saying,
- 5:00Speaker 3: You may eat of every tree of the garden. but
- 5:03Speaker 3: not of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 5:06Speaker 3: For if you do, you shall surely die. This would
- 5:11Speaker 3: be Adam's choice. For God does not desire relationship without
- 5:16Speaker 3: free will. Adam was with God in paradise. He dwelt
- 5:21Speaker 3: in the garden that was filled with all things good.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yet there was one thing that was not good. God said,
- 5:28Speaker 3: It is not good that man should be alone. So
- 5:32Speaker 3: the Lord caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. God,
- 5:37Speaker 3: like a silent surgeon, took a rib from Adam's side.
- 5:41Speaker 3: From this rib he formed a woman and breathed life
- 5:45Speaker 3: into her. At this moment, Adam's loneliness was quieted and
- 5:50Speaker 3: his soul and body were satisfied with her. Adam then
- 5:54Speaker 3: sang to her and the two were married before God.
- 5:58Speaker 3: To this day, This is why a man will leave
- 6:01Speaker 3: his family and become united with his wife. They were
- 6:05Speaker 3: naked and without shame, for there was no evil to
- 6:09Speaker 3: corrupt the purity of their unity. They made love, ate
- 6:13Speaker 3: the food in the garden, and cared for the earth
- 6:16Speaker 3: and its animals. God was in the garden with them,
- 6:20Speaker 3: and it was still good. Yet there still remained a
- 6:24Speaker 3: choice to stray, a choice that would alter the course
- 6:28Speaker 3: of all creation.
- 6:32Speaker 2: The dawn of man. This was a different work of creation.
- 6:36Speaker 2: For all other created things, God merely spoke and things
- 6:39Speaker 2: that were not suddenly were. But for humanity, it was different.
- 6:44Speaker 2: God took his own hands in the very dirt he
- 6:47Speaker 2: had created and formed man in the image of his
- 6:50Speaker 2: triune self. But he didn't stop there. He didn't just
- 6:54Speaker 2: fashion man with his hands. He breathed his very breath,
- 6:59Speaker 2: his breath of life into Adam. Then God created a
- 7:03Speaker 2: special place, a garden for Adam. Did you notice the
- 7:07Speaker 2: nature of God's relationship with Adam? This was not a
- 7:10Speaker 2: created being without choice, without freedom. God created a true
- 7:14Speaker 2: relationship with Adam, and so he gave mankind a choice.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Two trees, one full of good and life, the other
- 7:23Speaker 2: the path to broken relationship and an untimely death. And
- 7:28Speaker 2: it was in this garden that God and man were
- 7:30Speaker 2: to live in communion, knowing each other intimately. I imagine
- 7:35Speaker 2: this garden as the very best of the very best.
- 7:38Speaker 2: In a perfect creation, this was the most perfect place imaginable,
- 7:43Speaker 2: where every single need Adam had was met. Every need
- 7:48Speaker 2: except one, companionship and community. Our triune God knew that
- 7:54Speaker 2: to truly reflect his nature, this man would need to,
- 7:57Speaker 2: as he does with the Son and the Spirit, live
- 7:59Speaker 2: in community. Up to this point, God has said everything
- 8:03Speaker 2: was good, but looking at the lone man, he said
- 8:06Speaker 2: it was not good. God created all the animals and
- 8:12Speaker 2: brought them to Adam, who named each one of them,
- 8:16Speaker 2: but none were a fitting match. You see, they were
- 8:19Speaker 2: not part of Adam's own flesh. They were distinctly different.
- 8:23Speaker 2: That simply would not do. So once again, God set
- 8:27Speaker 2: to work in creating with his own hands. Genesis 2,
- 8:31Speaker 2: 22 and 23 records the moment when God gave Adam
- 8:34Speaker 2: this beautiful gift of a companion. It says, And the
- 8:38Speaker 2: Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which he
- 8:41Speaker 2: had taken from the man and brought her to the man.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Then the man said, At last, this is bone of
- 8:47Speaker 2: my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be
- 8:51Speaker 2: called woman because she was taken out of man. God
- 8:55Speaker 2: gave Adam a helper, a perfect pair to be with
- 8:58Speaker 2: him for mutual satisfaction. Eve was created from man and
- 9:03Speaker 2: together they lived in a perfect place, at least for now.
- 9:06Speaker 2: But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Today's story tells
- 9:09Speaker 2: us something very important about our need for community and companionship.
- 9:14Speaker 2: You see, whether you are married or not, God has
- 9:17Speaker 2: created you to be in communion with others. It is
- 9:21Speaker 2: not good to be alone. As God's image bearer, just
- 9:25Speaker 2: like Adam and Eve, you are made to live in community,
- 9:28Speaker 2: in unity with others just as God Himself exists in unity.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And the highest expression of this unity is seen nowhere
- 9:37Speaker 2: better than in the marriage relationship created by God right
- 9:40Speaker 2: there in the Garden of Eden. Likewise, this story shows
- 9:44Speaker 2: you that God has given you a choice. Like Adam
- 9:47Speaker 2: and Eve, you have before you the choice to follow
- 9:50Speaker 2: God or follow your own desires. It is a choice
- 9:54Speaker 2: between life eternal and death eternal. And it's the most important.
- 10:00Speaker 2: choice you will ever make. Dear Heavenly Father, just as
- 10:04Speaker 2: you provided for Adam's every need, you continue to do
- 10:08Speaker 2: so for us today. You have created us for community
- 10:12Speaker 2: with others and with yourself, and we thank you for that,
- 10:15Speaker 2: O Lord. Help us to choose you and your ways, God.
- 10:19Speaker 2: the way of life everlasting in Jesus Christ. Amen. Thank
- 10:25Speaker 2: you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
