- 0:00I want to read this just before we start because this verse came
- 0:03to my mind, just as I was praying meditating for tonight.
- 0:07It's very, very important to rehearse over ourselves what
- 0:11Jesus Christ, purchased for us, just the riches of his glory and
- 0:16the blessings that have been made available through the
- 0:17cross, just, you know, have to turn there.
- 0:19Just listen to what I have to say from this text and realize
- 0:22that Jesus purchased this for you, and it is yours because of
- 0:26faith is by Grace. This is your future.
- 0:29This is where your Headed because you are in Christ and
- 0:32just let it melt your heart that it rejuvenate you and bring hope
- 0:35to you in Revelation 21. Verse 3, John says, and I heard
- 0:41a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold The Dwelling
- 0:44Place of God is with man, he will dwell with them and they
- 0:50will be his people and God himself will be with them as
- 0:55their God. He not an angel, not seraphim
- 1:00that cherubim he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and
- 1:05Death Shall be no more no more funerals.
- 1:09No more early premature loss. No more loved ones gone for long
- 1:13periods of time. Death Shall be no more neither.
- 1:16Shall there be Mourning? North crying.
- 1:22Nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away.
- 1:29And he, who was Seated, on the throne said, behold, I am making
- 1:33all things new that's going to be the headline of the dawn of
- 1:37Eternity behold. I am making all things new also.
- 1:42He said, write this down for these words are trustworthy and
- 1:47true. You know what that means?
- 1:49They're really, really true trustworthy and true you can
- 1:54count on it. You can Surrender Your Life on
- 1:57it. You can believe Leave it with
- 1:59every faculty of your being. These words are trustworthy and
- 2:03true in the same words and Revelation that are trustworthy.
- 2:05And true, are the same words from the same author.
- 2:08And second, Samuel chapter 13, would you meet me there?
- 2:132nd, Samuel. 13. And as you turn there, we're
- 2:17going to put our finger together.
- 2:19I Verse 18 Last week you and I candidly discussed.
- 2:32The tragic desecration of one of David's precious daughters
- 2:36named. I used the pronunciation of
- 2:39Tamar, but in actuality it is, Tom are.
- 2:42So I'm going to borrow that for this Bible, study Tom odd who
- 2:45was violated by one of David's Sons, namely the eldest son
- 2:50amnon and we looked at and in great detail.
- 2:53And we concluded our time together last week by examining
- 2:57the attitude of and then after that evil act had been Committed
- 3:03and we looked at what had happened to him.
- 3:07After this, great crime came about and we realized that there
- 3:12was inside there about the deception of sin and how the
- 3:16true face of iniquity tends to only reveal itself after we buy
- 3:21into its lies, And an end and case what had happened to him
- 3:26though. It is an extreme example, his
- 3:30sexual sin, created, emotional confusion, and an in cured, upon
- 3:35himself, psychological damage. Among other things, those are
- 3:40the things that were apparent, but and then was not the only
- 3:45one who had a reaction to this atrocious Act.
- 3:50The Holy Spirit preserves for us in his wisdom three, utter other
- 3:55reactions to what end and had done and they are connected.
- 4:00Very closely to who he is. And these three reactions prove
- 4:04to us. How one's unhinged selfishness
- 4:09has collateral damage, damage beyond control damage, beyond
- 4:14what we calculated or planned. And we are going to look at
- 4:19these three reactions briefly. And it won't be pleasant.
- 4:24Bible study per se just like last week's, but I am under the
- 4:28persuasion that it is extremely necessary.
- 4:31Clearly, it's in the word of God, and can I share with you
- 4:34what my prayer has been for this segment.
- 4:37This chapter, this portion, and really, for the rest of second
- 4:40Samuel, it is that you and I, as God's people would grow in a
- 4:45particular way, we would grow in our hatred for sin.
- 4:50That you and I would have such a sour taste in our mouths based
- 4:55on what we study that it would create a greater resistance and
- 4:59discernment and strength in your fight against Temptation and my
- 5:04fight against Temptation that we would be appalled.
- 5:09And we would see through one of the Bible's, most detailed
- 5:13description of the horrors of sin.
- 5:15Just how deplorable Giving into our flesh can really be.
- 5:22And so let this Bible study tonight and Spire a fresh Zeal
- 5:26to fight against that, which lies to you that, which put our
- 5:31savior on the cross, that which has created all the mess that we
- 5:35are enduring here in this world and our universe altogether.
- 5:41And that's what we're going to do.
- 5:43We're going to Dive Right In and examine these three responses
- 5:47and then we are going to because the holy spirit is going to lead
- 5:49us in this direction. Highlight one of these responses
- 5:52and expand on them because it will teach us really, really
- 5:57will teach us of the Folly of giving into one particular sin,
- 6:02and that is retaliation seeking Revenge.
- 6:09Harboring bitterness and unforgiveness imagining taking
- 6:14things into your own hands. The Bible here will show us just
- 6:20how foolish that is. So be prepared.
- 6:25As we read here in verse 18, we look at our first response apart
- 6:30from Eminence to this evil, this evil of rape.
- 6:33This evil of young men who targeted his half-sister and
- 6:38took advantage of her to satiate lust and our first response.
- 6:44Predictably is that of God. What do we see here?
- 6:48In verse 18? Let's look at it.
- 6:50Briefly. Now, she was wearing a long robe
- 6:55with sleeves for the swear, the Virgin Daughters of the king
- 6:58dressed. So his servant put her out and
- 7:02bolted the door after her. Remember, that was the last
- 7:04thing that we saw. We saw and then kick her out of
- 7:07the room and calling one of his servants to do that.
- 7:11And a verse 19, and Tom odd, put ashes on her head and tour, the
- 7:15long robe that she wore, and she laid her hand on her head and
- 7:20went away crying aloud. As she went.
- 7:24So sad to read this, it's very heavy but it's also pretty
- 7:28predictable because her open grief here, this Screech of
- 7:34Sorrow is really the expression of loss.
- 7:38It's something that you would see even with the ashes and The
- 7:41Ripping of garments is something that you would see in the
- 7:44scriptures when somebody loses somebody, that they really loved
- 7:47and respected. Somebody had died.
- 7:51And so this is extreme pain. This is deep, this is
- 7:53significant and it does speak of a pain connected to a loss but
- 7:58not a loss from or for someone but if something, what did this
- 8:03woman lose her Purity, her chastity. that which she guarded
- 8:09that, which she protected that, which provided her a sense of a
- 8:13safe future has been taken from her because of one moment of a
- 8:18man who had unbridled lust perversion taking over and with
- 8:25his power. And with his position, he took
- 8:29advantage of this young lady and she symbolized her misery.
- 8:34Very plainly and obviously by ripping off those sleeves which
- 8:37signified her purity. And she throws him away and she
- 8:41declares from that moment on I am unclean, I'm destroyed.
- 8:45My future is gone. It will never be the same and
- 8:48you get a hint of the bleakness of her future in verse 20.
- 8:52If you read the last part of verse 20, we reached so, Tom
- 8:54odd, lived, a desolate woman, In her brother absalom's house, and
- 9:01that's the last time you're going to hear ever.
- 9:04She now lives with her brother, her full brother, and that's it,
- 9:08you never never see any mention of Thomas again.
- 9:10So you get the impression. This is how she lives the rest
- 9:12of her life. We don't know if she finds
- 9:15somebody, we don't know if somebody takes her and, you
- 9:16know, she has a family just this and and that bleakness is
- 9:20supposed to make an impression on us and it seems unfair.
- 9:24But last week, you heard me say, and it's worth saying again that
- 9:27the Brokenness the extent of our Brokenness in our world due to
- 9:31sin extends, even to harming destroying polluting.
- 9:38Even those who are innocent in various and Grievous ways.
- 9:43That's what we see with this woman.
- 9:46And according to the holy spirit of God, you know this very well.
- 9:48There is only one solution to ensuring that we decrease trauma
- 9:56and pain and wounds caused by selfishness caused by sin.
- 10:03And that is found in the summary of one command.
- 10:06Is it really? That simple brother.
- 10:08It's actually really that simple, though, the command is
- 10:11very demanding on our flesh. Hence why it must be
- 10:15supernaturally, generated and induce by the holy spirit of
- 10:19God, I want to show you how in one simple verse with one simple
- 10:23command. Most and up, not all of our
- 10:27problems in this world can be solved.
- 10:29Can I show it to you? It's in Galatians 5.
- 10:32Galatians 5. And I want you to see it.
- 10:34In verse 14, There are a lot of commands in the Bible, a lot of
- 10:41commands were more familiar with the Big Ten but there are more
- 10:44than the Big Ten. And there is a law the law of
- 10:48Christ on top of that. And look what Paul says by the
- 10:53spirit in Galatians 5:14. So for the whole law, is
- 11:00fulfilled in one word. The whole law is fulfilled in
- 11:04one word. You know what it is?
- 11:06You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 11:09You know what Paul is saying here?
- 11:12The, the solution or the motivation for every law that
- 11:15you can think of, especially horizontally.
- 11:19To knowing its fulfillment and consistency is in Christ.
- 11:25Spirit. Transforming the Inner Man and
- 11:28producing in that heart, a love a Divine love and agape, love.
- 11:34So think about it, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not
- 11:37covet, do not bear false, witness thing about gossip
- 11:41jealousy, Envy Backbiting, Pride, all these different
- 11:46things. All of that can be solved when
- 11:50making that claim of faith and putting your trust in Jesus and
- 11:53allowing the Holy Spirit through that Faith to enter in and to
- 11:57renew you from the inside out. We can see the whole scope of
- 12:06Harmony and peace be reduced to nothing if this is perfectly cut
- 12:10and we know it's not perfect because we're going to no
- 12:12Perfection when we when we come to Perfection.
- 12:15But the principal still lies. True.
- 12:16That there is a call to pursue that kind of love.
- 12:19And in pursuing, that kind of love.
- 12:22There is a victory over that which destroys And in the very
- 12:29next verse of what Paul says here, you get the reverse of a
- 12:32failure, the failure of pursuing that kind of love opens us up to
- 12:37this kind of a world. And what is that?
- 12:39Look at verse 15. but if you if you bite and devour one another
- 12:48watch out that you are not consumed by one another So if
- 12:53this love is missing in us and if it's not being actively
- 12:56pursued by the believer, this is what you can expect in your
- 13:00world, in your home, in our schools, and our government.
- 13:06Our churches. Biting and devouring one.
- 13:11Another Biting and devouring that has beastly, connotations.
- 13:18And that is exactly what is being described here.
- 13:21Only animals bite and devour one another and nowadays humans, who
- 13:26claim that their animals might do it, I guess, but it's clear.
- 13:30This is not human behavior, but void of this love, we can be
- 13:34reduced to such Behavior. This is the contrast the
- 13:39previous verse when God's love goes missing when it is void.
- 13:43Humans are capable of acting and treating one another, to the
- 13:47point where you become like irrational, beasts, and
- 13:50actually, cause some kind of Extinction Until you completely.
- 13:55What? Consume one.
- 13:56Another. And that's what we see in local
- 13:59churches. We see local churches consumed
- 14:02here's the scariest part about what I'm presenting you today.
- 14:04Paul is not writing an epistle to the heathens and galatia.
- 14:08He's writing to the Christians of galatia.
- 14:11So this is a warning, this is an encouragement and a warning to
- 14:15the Believers in galatia which tells me that Believers are
- 14:19capable of verse 15. It's Believers that are capable
- 14:23of biting and devouring one another, not the world.
- 14:26Now if that is possible in this lovely place, would lovely
- 14:30songs, lovely music, lovely messages, then what would become
- 14:35of the world that is devoid of the spirit.
- 14:37And I think you and I are going to depends what you believe
- 14:40about the The tribulation, whether you're there or here,
- 14:43you're going to perceive what the world will look like when
- 14:47the Holy Spirit chooses to distance himself from actively
- 14:50working in our world, there was going to be there is now in
- 14:54there will be an intensification of biting and devouring one.
- 14:57Another you're saying well what does that look like?
- 14:59Well, here's a little Glimpse. What, what?
- 15:00Am needed to tame our Port Ahmad.
- 15:04That's what happens. And so Tom, our shows as Tom our
- 15:08reminds us that when this Godlike Love Is void, then pure
- 15:15innocent, lovely people like her, get hurt.
- 15:20And there's a biting and devouring and destroying.
- 15:24But now, we come to the second reaction to this atrocious act
- 15:27and it's found in verse 20. We looked at Tom odd briefly.
- 15:32Now we look at her brother, verse 20 and her brother Absalom
- 15:35said to her has amnon your brother been with you.
- 15:41Makes you wonder how he put the pieces together.
- 15:45Makes you wonder what kind of reputation and aunt had has am
- 15:48known your brother been with you now.
- 15:50Hold your peace. My sister.
- 15:53He is your brother do not take this to Heart.
- 15:58I come here and look at verse 22 in connection to that but
- 16:01Absalom spoke to em them. Neither good nor bad for Absalom
- 16:07hated em because he had violated his sister Tom odd.
- 16:13So you and I were prepared to be introduced to this man because
- 16:18in the very first verse of chapter 13, He is mentioned.
- 16:20And so we finally now see him in action and his initial words are
- 16:24directed towards his exploited sister.
- 16:27This is some kind of an attempt, I guess to, to comfort her to
- 16:32put her at ease. And it seems like he's
- 16:34downplaying what happened. And it's not because he is
- 16:38insensitive though, you can make that case.
- 16:40But it's because he has a plan. Absalom is instructing his
- 16:46sister to do this. Very thing to hush her.
- 16:49So, to speak because Absalom has a hope in his own heart, and it
- 16:53was very quickly inspired and that hope was to take measures
- 16:56into his own hands. And he knew that if Tom our
- 17:01tells the king or if she reports it or if she puts him on blast
- 17:05this can become a public Scandal very quickly and he's not afraid
- 17:10of this marring. His family's name.
- 17:12He's not concerned about that. At all, you're going to learn
- 17:14that he didn't. Care about that very much.
- 17:16What he is concerned about though, is that this could
- 17:18possibly give him Or rather he can lose the opportunity to take
- 17:23this into his own hands and satisfy, personal vengeance.
- 17:31And the reason why he doesn't do it right away.
- 17:33Is because the same way Tom are was not easily accessible.
- 17:37And so, a man had to pull back a little bit and come up with a
- 17:40plan. Absalom knows that he's going to
- 17:43have to also come up with a plan and sometimes a good plan takes
- 17:46some time. So what's the strategy now?
- 17:51What? You just read in verse 20.
- 17:54Verse 22, rather. He plays it.
- 17:56Cool, he pretends he's casual He doesn't say a word to his
- 18:02brother. He isn't showing any aggression.
- 18:06He doesn't even reprove him. No, reprimand.
- 18:07Nothing of the sort. He just goes a long as nothing
- 18:10happened. He just moves day-to-day.
- 18:15As though nothing had happened. What can we learn from Absalom
- 18:18here? Here's what we can learn.
- 18:22There are many lessons, and this is the one that came to mind sin
- 18:25begets sin. I know that the same profound
- 18:29but it's important sin, begets sin, and what I mean by that is
- 18:34the cycle of pain that we are realizing that.
- 18:38You see before you that you might be experiencing even
- 18:40tonight in your own world that cycle of pain that's doesn't
- 18:43seem to be ending but it's constantly being fuelled.
- 18:48Often survives. Because of the response of
- 18:53people to the response of other sins, meaning it's the sin comes
- 19:00to me, me responding to that sin with my own sin is what keeps
- 19:05this thing alive and going. It keeps the cynicism, the
- 19:11danger, the Temptation, the potential destruction alive, and
- 19:18well. And what he's prepared to do
- 19:21here is the total opposite of what you and I are called to,
- 19:25you know, you and I have a code according to God's law and the
- 19:28code is very straightforward. We do not violate God's law in
- 19:32order to deal with sin around us or toward us.
- 19:36That's just a no-go Zone. We don't cross that boundary.
- 19:39We never entertain committing an evil to deal with any other
- 19:43evil. And so we see here that Absalom
- 19:48is prepared to do just that He is going to now, add to the fuel
- 19:54to the fire rather with his own Fuel.
- 19:57And and if you want to know how this works on a, you might see
- 20:00it here on a microscopic scale, but you can see it on a societal
- 20:03scale, even in the very city that you live in Brothers.
- 20:05Do you remember, when we used to serve at Woodbridge?
- 20:08One of the most astounding things that came to me when we
- 20:10used to minister among teenagers, who were actively
- 20:13engage Ang's, Was when we asked them just straightforwardly.
- 20:18Why do you do this? Why do you shoot people?
- 20:20Why do you kill? Why do you plot, why do you take
- 20:23revenge? And you know what, the number
- 20:25one answer was well because we have to pay them back.
- 20:28We have to pay them back. He took out my buddy, he took
- 20:31out my friend, he took out my cousin, he took out my father.
- 20:34And I remember watching a news coverage of the shootings here
- 20:38in our own City And the reporter told one of these gang members,
- 20:40who had a mask on didn't want to reveal their his identity.
- 20:43Why don't you just put the guns down?
- 20:45And it was just like an atrocious.
- 20:47Thought, like, what are you talking about?
- 20:48Put the guns down. So, the very news that you hear
- 20:53every single night, the sirens the deaths, the funerals of
- 20:57teenagers. Is fueled by one main thing
- 21:01retaliation. And if there was a generation
- 21:06who did understand that Vengeance belongs to God and
- 21:09they did put it to a halt, we would see Revival.
- 21:13To some degree. And that's why when we we
- 21:17learned that we came 11 Thursday night, we came with our Bibles
- 21:20and we gave him a Bible study about how God says vengeance is
- 21:24mine and to take Vengeance from goddess to steal from God.
- 21:27And we tried to convince him from the scriptures of the
- 21:29wisdom of allowing almighty, God, who is completely aware,
- 21:33and I'm an observant and taking into account, everything that's
- 21:38being done, he will actually intervene And he will stand for
- 21:41justice. And that that you can just see
- 21:45it on their face. You can see it on there and
- 21:46they're questions that demanded. Such great faith.
- 21:51Such great faith. You're telling me that God can
- 21:54defend me And so, yes, we're seeing it even here in our own
- 22:00City. What Absalom is ready to do, is
- 22:03what people are doing tonight. and all it takes is that one
- 22:09truth that God is just, he is a judge, he can act, he can
- 22:13defend, he can intervene for so much to be put aside but people
- 22:17just don't believe They don't believe so much.
- 22:21Depends on faith. My friend so much depends on
- 22:24faith. It seems so simple yet so hard
- 22:27at the same time especially when the pain is so real.
- 22:32But but to say, I will take vengeance is to assume a
- 22:37prerogative that belongs to God alone.
- 22:39And so that's some kind of form of idolatry going on there.
- 22:41You're not God. You're not God.
- 22:45And when you take Vengeance into your own hands, you often go
- 22:48above and beyond what Justice demands, right?
- 22:52So you can cure even more guilt and more sin and more chaos and
- 22:55more. And that's what we're about to
- 22:56see before we see how this is expanded.
- 22:58Let's look at our third and final reaction to eminent sin
- 23:01because sin is never one dimensional.
- 23:03Look at verse 21. Now we look at David's reaction,
- 23:06the father of both eminent and Tom odd, isn't it sad?
- 23:10That it's only one verse Verse 21.
- 23:14When King David heard, all of these things, he was very angry.
- 23:21What's missing? You would think so, he would or
- 23:27so, he nothing. He was very angry, no action,
- 23:33only strong emotion on display and then we cut back to Absalom
- 23:37and verse 22. And this is extremely
- 23:40disappointing, and you and I should feel that disappointment
- 23:44because in the same way you and I heard that retaliation begets
- 23:48more problems and sin. So does injustice, you know what
- 23:52David should have done with the lawsuit to do?
- 23:54As difficult as it seems? And Leviticus 20 verse 17, we
- 23:58are told that when anybody is sexually intimate with an
- 24:01immediate family member, they are to be cut off.
- 24:07The guilty, parties are to be cut off.
- 24:08That may sound severe but that's the law.
- 24:10God Knows Best. And David doesn't do anything of
- 24:13the sort, he doesn't even rebuked him.
- 24:18It is even call him into his presence and threatened him.
- 24:21Nothing, he just expresses frustration and anger and he
- 24:26lets him go lenient careless. Casual, he felt the right
- 24:33emotions but it just stop there. And that's a problem.
- 24:38And this being placed between absalom's initial words to his
- 24:42sister. Tamar and his demeanor towards
- 24:45his brother, am ninh the placement, their sandwich in
- 24:48between those suggest to us, that David's unwillingness to do
- 24:54something, encourage Absalom to take revenge.
- 24:59Okay, Dad, if you're not going to do anything, I'll do it.
- 25:02I'll do it. You don't want to do anything
- 25:07about it, then I'll do it. Gladly, and here's here's the
- 25:10principal for you and I to consider these are so important
- 25:13to see. When evil is not confronted. and
- 25:17if it is not restrained by those who have been given God, decreed
- 25:23authority to handle sin and evil and immorality Injustice,
- 25:28whatever the case may be sin is guaranteed to multiply
- 25:32guaranteed to multiply and is nothing short of dangerous for
- 25:38the home. For the church and for Society
- 25:45at large, when it's leaders turn a blind eye to willful sin and
- 25:52do nothing about it. So, leaders of the home leaders
- 25:58in the church leaders in different spheres of society.
- 26:02This is why you have to be careful craving or wanting to be
- 26:05a leader. Because part of that job
- 26:08description, is you being able to boldly face in and do
- 26:11something about it? To confront it, to rebuke it to
- 26:16council it, whatever the case may be, but to leave it.
- 26:21Blood is on our hands and God will hold leaders accountable
- 26:25like what? We'll see here.
- 26:28And what we do here when we don't allow sin to be attacked
- 26:33by our leaders. And When leaders refused to do
- 26:35that, it only in boldin's, The Sinner, to persist, and even
- 26:39grow in that sin intensifying that sin.
- 26:41And here's the, here's the scariest part.
- 26:43It even invites by standards to eventually participate.
- 26:49Nothing happened. Nothing happened.
- 26:54So maybe I can and and then that just it just multiplies more and
- 26:59more and more. I want to show you actually an
- 27:01encouraging example of what happens when leaders do take a
- 27:04stand and When leaders especially in God's house, do
- 27:09look at evil face to face and are not ashamed or afraid of the
- 27:12repercussions for standing for righteousness.
- 27:15And this is, this is something you won't see or won't hear at a
- 27:19modern business like church growth program.
- 27:23Give you a heads up. So look at this.
- 27:25This is an axe chapter 5. Right in Acts chapter 5, this is
- 27:29that chapter remind you of a important incident.
- 27:32In the early church who here knows their Bible.
- 27:34Well, what happens in Acts chapter 5 Yes, very good and a
- 27:38nice as safire thought they can go to church and lie about their
- 27:42offering and I got in trouble with the Holy Spirit and so how
- 27:46much trouble they like? Not be able to come to the
- 27:49communion table for a couple weeks and no they weren't able
- 27:52to go to community about at all because they were killed.
- 27:57And so we read that and then we come to this text in verse 12 of
- 28:01chapter 5. Look at what we're told here
- 28:02about the early church. Now, many signs and wonders were
- 28:06regularly done among the People by the hands of the Apostles.
- 28:11And they were all together in Solomon's Portico, that's great.
- 28:15So after church discipline and a very, the most extreme way has
- 28:19been exercised, Revival continues to break out miracles
- 28:22signs wonders Souls. But then what do you read in
- 28:25verse 13? None of the rest dared to join
- 28:29them. But the people held them in high
- 28:32esteem. None of the people dare join
- 28:36them. But they held him in high
- 28:38esteem. So the culture, the city, the
- 28:41surrounding areas, really respected, Christians in the
- 28:44early Church, High esteem. They were reverent, they were
- 28:49not quick to say things about them or to them at least, at
- 28:53this point. But what what strikes interest
- 28:57in me is the fact that none of the rest of their join.
- 28:59That sounds like a sound, like a negative thing.
- 29:02That sounds like a sounds like the opposite of what you want
- 29:05your church to experience. Can you imagine here at NBC?
- 29:09If we learned that in our neighborhood, none would want to
- 29:12join us. That wouldn't be the most
- 29:15uplifting update of our Evangelistic Outreach.
- 29:20But this is very good. And the reason why it's very
- 29:23good is because those who not who dared, not join them.
- 29:27Were those who already have hearted to begin with.
- 29:30These were the people who were very intrigued by what was
- 29:34happening with Jesus message and Jesus people.
- 29:37But they were not sold out. Nor were they ready to sell out?
- 29:41They were not ready to give in everything that Christ demands.
- 29:44They're willing to participate. They're willing to sign up.
- 29:46They're willing to be present but then something had happened.
- 29:49That totally discourage them from signing up for the
- 29:52membership interview. What was it?
- 29:55It wasn't chop. It wasn't verse, 12, Shirley was
- 29:57so having before verse 12 and a nice and safire, so put the
- 30:02pieces together. Here's what happened when you
- 30:04had a leader like Peter, who is sensitive enough to the Holy
- 30:06Spirit to speak the truth and to confront Levin corruption in the
- 30:13midst of a holy assembly. Something happens.
- 30:20And as a result, it not only removed impurity, it protected
- 30:25the church from further corruption.
- 30:28So once the people outside of the walls heard, whoa, that
- 30:32church is for Real. They don't let you come and be a
- 30:36part of their church and hold on to sin willfully.
- 30:39At the same time, I ain't signing up.
- 30:42You're saying well, that's good, that's very good and it's all
- 30:46contingent upon again, the beginning of chapter 5 where you
- 30:49had a leadership that really believed in the high call of
- 30:53Christ and was unwilling to entertain or open up their
- 30:58assembly to those who could care less about being holy and being
- 31:01like Jesus so none there join them.
- 31:04I'm not interested. Leadership is so important.
- 31:09The type of leadership is very important and unfortunately,
- 31:12here David is lenient yet again and he will continue to be
- 31:15lenient again. In the coming weeks, you're
- 31:17going to see it. And so we continue it, but
- 31:21before we move on, let me ask you another question.
- 31:24Is there another possible reason why?
- 31:26David was not so quick to say anything in that saying,
- 31:28anything at all? I'm actually asking you any
- 31:32idea. Yes.
- 31:38Did you hear it Bathsheba? Could it be that David here is
- 31:45paralyzed from his past? I think that's a good case to
- 31:49make. Here's, here's what I mean by
- 31:52that. I sinned sexually.
- 31:59And I destroyed people in my own life.
- 32:04What right do I have to say anything to my son?
- 32:08What right? Do I have to correct him or
- 32:10discipline? And it could be that this man
- 32:14here is proving to us as sometimes reproof and correction
- 32:20is lacking from those who have been authorized to administer
- 32:23righteousness and peace because their own Hearts condemn them.
- 32:29Don't heart scan them them. So, you know, you have some
- 32:35people who say, you know, when when a pastor or minister speaks
- 32:39on a certain sin, it's probably very likely that he's struggling
- 32:42with that same sin. Okay, maybe, but what about
- 32:46those who never speak on it? What does that indicate?
- 32:51Right now we can't make blanket statements and judge, only God
- 32:55knows. But we have an example here with
- 32:57David, who's very hesitant to say something perhaps because he
- 33:01himself is guilty of the very or very similar crime.
- 33:06This main point isn't about hypocrisy but it's worth
- 33:09speaking about a hypocrisy drains us of authority.
- 33:14It does it weakens our testimony.
- 33:19It makes us cowards. It holds back boldness.
- 33:27But the point here is more about the power of past guilt.
- 33:35If guilt was the thing, that was burdening.
- 33:38David at this time. Then this is a important truth
- 33:42in regards, to how we manage guilt and how it visits us and
- 33:45what we should do with it. If you are not careful, guilt,
- 33:50can paralyze you in many ways, it can hold you back from so
- 33:56much. And so what's the most important
- 34:00thing and moving forward in your own walk with the Lord and even
- 34:03being a blessing to others is realizing.
- 34:05If God has forgiven me, then God has forgiven me, and this is the
- 34:08most important thing that David needed to learn.
- 34:11The standard of righteousness was not his past experience, or
- 34:15his presence success. It's God's word.
- 34:19We appeal to God's word. And so you have some friends
- 34:24that are unwilling to speak and to correct other friends because
- 34:28perhaps in the past, they've dealt with something and they
- 34:30just feel like, well, what can I say to that person?
- 34:33You have parents who are even tempted to be like this in
- 34:36raising their own children? Because they've struggled as
- 34:41teenagers in a certain way. Now they're seeing their own
- 34:43children struggle as teenagers but who am I to say anything to
- 34:46them? Because I was like that when I
- 34:47was 16 18 21 And so guilt paralyzes.
- 34:55But again, it's not your performance that determines your
- 34:59responsibility, it's God's word. And so you appeal to that in
- 35:05humility with David should have done, is in humility and
- 35:09Brokenness, in an awareness of his own failures still
- 35:14administer. What God had called him to do as
- 35:16a father and as a judge? So be careful, be careful how
- 35:21you might do. Determine the way you influence
- 35:25others, or how you even, see yourself, and how you walk in
- 35:29the call of God, that he has for you.
- 35:31Some people. They failed so bad.
- 35:32They just, they just determined. I'm just forget it.
- 35:35I'm never going to pursue it. I'm never going to do it.
- 35:37I'm not going to serve in that capacity.
- 35:38I'm never going to believe God, for great things because this is
- 35:40where I'm at. But if it's been forgiven, it's
- 35:42been forgiven. So be careful.
- 35:47We see a clear example of a man who could not shake off his
- 35:50guilt. Most likely Now, let's come back
- 35:53to our chapter, shall we? We've dealt with the three
- 35:56responses here to a man's actions, but now we look at one
- 36:00and we magnify because that's what the Holy Spirit does.
- 36:04Look at this verse 23, after two full years, I couldn't pass that
- 36:11phrase without much meditation. After two full years, two full
- 36:17years go by. And here's an important thought
- 36:21because we're about to see Absalom.
- 36:23Execute what started? As a thought just a couple of
- 36:27verses ago After two full years, you know what that tells me this
- 36:31man has been meditating plotting visualizing for two full years.
- 36:40What to do with his half-brother. to flee years, not
- 36:46two full weeks, not two, full months, two full years, And what
- 36:53started, as a thought would now materialize, and it's very
- 36:58sobering for you and Ice to see that sin is very willing and
- 37:03comfortable to live in your heart.
- 37:07As long as you tolerate it. And it's cancerous and it's
- 37:13infectious and it's this. It's just poisonous and we're
- 37:18seeing that very clearly with this man.
- 37:19It's not very difficult to see how pride and anger and
- 37:23bitterness. And lust.
- 37:27And a dishonest Spirit, whatever the case b is willing to remain
- 37:31there for decades years on end. Because that is the, that is the
- 37:36power of the clutch of sin. It will be like a leech that
- 37:40just remains there and sucks the life out of you slowly.
- 37:44And as you heard me, say one solution to one point here is
- 37:47the solution for this. The only remedy is when Christ
- 37:50comes in and cleans house. That's the only remedy, he is
- 37:53the only one that can loosen that grip and go beyond
- 37:56loosening that grip. If and instill within you a
- 37:58different kind of heartbeat and that is exactly what this man
- 38:02needed. It is so sad to see how for so
- 38:06long. He was willing to stay in that
- 38:07place and yet it could be true tonight.
- 38:10Even That things have not changed, it's only grown over
- 38:15time. You see what started as a
- 38:17thought for and and has now been perfected over time. because
- 38:23that's what happens to you and I we're not guarded, you know what
- 38:26happens you know the you know the the sequence of how these
- 38:30things occur, it's a visited thought and then what you do is
- 38:36you torment yourself. Here's the point, the main sin
- 38:41that the holy spirit is highlighting.
- 38:43Here is the issue of mishandling.
- 38:47Offense when offense comes your way, that is a potential key to
- 38:53unlock, a vault of Critters that you don't want in the home of
- 38:58your heart. Here's what happens when offense
- 39:01comes. What we see here is that
- 39:03retaliation now is being bred. And and what happens here is
- 39:10that if you're not careful as much as it is, satisfying to
- 39:14hold on to that pain. You in fact will cause yourself
- 39:18to be tormented. And here's how the torment looks
- 39:22you. Replayed that thing over and
- 39:24over again, right? When you get a moment's time
- 39:28where you're actively doing something, you just rehearse
- 39:31that thing. And you remember, you even
- 39:33visualize the words and the actions and the feelings and the
- 39:37moment you found out or the moment, it happened and you just
- 39:40keep going over and over and over.
- 39:42That can't be good for you and if you're not careful, here's
- 39:45the next level. Now, you begin to imagine what
- 39:47you should have done, right? Oh, if I can go back, if I can
- 39:52go back, I would have said this, I would have done this, I would
- 39:55have pre-emptive here and if you're not careful, you now
- 39:58begin to think what you might do now, or what you should do
- 40:02moving forward. And that's where things get
- 40:06crazy. And really, really, unless the
- 40:08Holy Spirit through his word, through being in the presence of
- 40:13God's people, you actively discipline being with God,
- 40:16unless you do that, you can you can be led into now where those
- 40:20things are just trickling here. Begin to now, pull on you where
- 40:25you you try to satisfy that because it's also consuming in
- 40:29it manifests and one way or another.
- 40:33And that's exactly what's going to happen here with Anna.
- 40:36He nurtures, it and said, instead of controlling it, it's
- 40:40going to get ugly. Another thing to consider those
- 40:43two years in those two full years.
- 40:45It's not just Absalom, but Edmund, after two full years,
- 40:49the guy doesn't show any signs of repentance two years.
- 40:55You would think that after evading judgment and any kind of
- 40:59reprimand after just going away, scot-free that that Humble you
- 41:03as a sinner and you would come broken before God say God, the
- 41:07fact that I'm still here in one piece is by your mercy.
- 41:11I'm So Unworthy serving, please forgive me.
- 41:14No, just think she's still a prince and thinks he can still
- 41:20get away with things and he just again, as though nothing had
- 41:24happened, and I see these two years as a window of God's
- 41:29mercy, even for a Wretched Man, like amnon And the same man who
- 41:35was blinded by his lust devouring, his half-sister is
- 41:39the same man, who is completely oblivious to the fact that God
- 41:42is extending kindness to him. Kindness thing like just
- 41:48unexplainable, kindness to him. Sinners are stubborn.
- 41:53Sinners are stubborn. Let these two years in light of
- 41:56amnon remind you that Sinners are extremely stubborn, and
- 42:01because Sinners are starving, you know what, God's primary
- 42:04responses to the stubbornness of Sinners.
- 42:06He's patient He's patient. Second, Peter 3:9 tells us that
- 42:14his return is not slow, you have to understand it as patients.
- 42:19Because he desires for all to reach repentance. even with
- 42:24people like amnion as hard as that is to imagine So, two full
- 42:30years. There is no sign of change or
- 42:34conviction in this man's heart. And so something takes place.
- 42:39Moving on Absalom is about to execute his plan.
- 42:42He found that this is the perfect time and here's his plan
- 42:45verse 24. Let's finish the verse 23.
- 42:49Absalom had sheep shears at b'hala has or which is near F,
- 42:53Rahim and Absalom invited. All the king's Sons we seen this
- 42:57before. When it was this time of the
- 42:59year where you would Shear your sheep.
- 43:00It was a time of harvest. It was festive and so you would
- 43:04have visitors come family members come and Would you would
- 43:07celebrate? And so Absalom now wants to host
- 43:12the party at his house. So he wants to invite all the
- 43:16king's Sons. And so he came to the king.
- 43:19It says your Absalom came to the king and said, behold your
- 43:21servant has sheep shears. Please let the king and his
- 43:24servants go with your servant. But the king said the Absalom,
- 43:30no my son, let us not all go less, we be burdensome to you.
- 43:34He pressed him, but he would not go, but gave him a blessing.
- 43:38Here's what you see. Absalom wants to invite David
- 43:42everybody else. So, if the readers I'm familiar
- 43:44with the story, you think this is just fine, right?
- 43:47But he's a really good actor. He wants to make it seem as
- 43:50though there is nothing about to happen by inviting the king of
- 43:55all people to be in his presence.
- 43:58Hey, Dad, a plane to have a party, you know, it's the
- 44:01season. Come come bring the rest of the
- 44:04boys. Let's all, let's all come have a
- 44:05great time and the father says, no, its Financial, they'll be
- 44:09too much on you. You know, how it is.
- 44:11If somebody inviting all these people over, it might be too
- 44:12much, I'll stay back. Don't worry about.
- 44:15No Dad, please please, it'll be a great time and I have a bunch
- 44:19of Servants have a bunch of stuff.
- 44:21It was a wonderful fruitful year just kind of will be okay knows
- 44:24and no plea and he pressed them And what is he doing?
- 44:28He's deceiving. And so David denies it?
- 44:35And shouldn't our antennas be up.
- 44:39Haven't we seen this before? Limit limit.
- 44:44Let me remind you who was it. That ask the king for one of his
- 44:51kids to come to their home. Thank you and then didn't even
- 44:57do the same thing. He asked the king for tomorrow
- 45:01to come over. Our antenna should be up this
- 45:05isn't look good. We see here that he is employing
- 45:09a very similar tactic seemingly innocent invitation and David is
- 45:16clearly not Discerning enough to realize it until until he denies
- 45:21the request and absolute makes a more pointed request.
- 45:25Look at verse 26, then Absalom said, if not Please let my
- 45:31brother and then go with us. Oh.
- 45:38And the King said to him, why should he go with you?
- 45:44Good job, David. Verse 27, but Absalom pressed
- 45:49him until he let em ninh and all the king's Sons go with him.
- 45:56You can imagine what was racing through, David's mind.
- 45:58That's a very strange request that you highlighted M then It
- 46:03was probably just wishing for the best, hoping for the best.
- 46:08And he thought, you know, it's been two years.
- 46:10Nothing happened. A man is the eldest.
- 46:14He technically, if you look at the legality of things he's next
- 46:18in line to be the king and so, his presence is is an honorable
- 46:23thing, all right? You want em.
- 46:25And then the rest of the come Let them go.
- 46:29And as we continue in the next scene, we quickly pick up on
- 46:31other familiar, ingredients, from a recent story.
- 46:34So now the scene shifts from David's Palace to absalom's,
- 46:37home in verse 28, then Absalom commanded his servants.
- 46:42So maybe they're in the back room or something while
- 46:44everybody else is out in the the front or in the yard, then
- 46:47Absalom commanded his servants, Mark, when a man's heart is
- 46:51Merry with wine and when I say to you strike em, and then kill
- 46:57Him do not fear, have I not commanded you be courageous and
- 47:02be Valiant. So, here's the plot.
- 47:10Do we see a familiarity here? Think about the ingredients of
- 47:13the story? It's not difficult to see the
- 47:16connection, right? Yes.
- 47:21David did he not invite Uriah over to his house to feast?
- 47:28Did he not intoxicate him? Whether they say when his heart
- 47:32is married with mine, strike him.
- 47:35And when that failed, what the David do, he called upon one of
- 47:39his servants, namely joab to have Uriah killed and you see
- 47:45here Absalom telling his servants to do the Dirty Work.
- 47:51When I tell you kill him. So if M then replayed David
- 47:57sexual sin before him Absalom is re surfacing David's deceptive.
- 48:05Murder. But look at the words here of
- 48:12Absalom to his servants. The last part he tells them do
- 48:17not fear, have I not commanded you be courageous and Valiant.
- 48:25You might have similar words on a coffee mug at home.
- 48:29Huh. Do they not sound familiar?
- 48:33What are they? What is this?
- 48:34Come from or at least, we're does it ring from Joshua 1:9
- 48:39when the Lord told. His servants have I not
- 48:43commanded. You be strong and courageous do
- 48:45not be frightened and do not be dismayed for the Lord.
- 48:47Your God is with you wherever you go.
- 48:49I'm not saying Absalom is quoting him directly, but I am
- 48:52saying that there is a similarity in the language here
- 48:54and there's a strategy behind the persuasion of this
- 48:57invitation. Hey, my servants do not fear,
- 49:01have I not commanded, you be courageous and Valiant.
- 49:05What's Absalom trying to do here?
- 49:08Can I tell you what? I believe he's doing here.
- 49:09He is making sin, more inviting by coating it and presenting it
- 49:16as an honorable cause He's making it seem like a noble
- 49:23cause by using this righteous language.
- 49:29He's making it seem like what they are going to do is
- 49:32virtuous. Don't be afraid be Valiant.
- 49:37Be courageous, do not fear. And we look at that thing.
- 49:41Well that's quite interesting. And I'm trying to tell you today
- 49:43that our culture is convincing people to sin in the very same
- 49:47manner. Think think deeply believer
- 49:52think deeply about how it takes like this even applies to our
- 49:56culture today. Think about the sins of Our
- 50:00Generation that are inviting a naive people.
- 50:04Undiscerning to believe that. What they are participating in
- 50:09is not just a matter of subjective morality but is in
- 50:13fact, right? And good.
- 50:15So defending abortion, Let's see if he'll stay on YouTube.
- 50:21Defending abortion is not supporting murder.
- 50:24You are advocating for a woman's right to choose.
- 50:29Doesn't that sound Noble? A woman's right to choose.
- 50:36That's what we're advocating for.
- 50:40What about coming out coming out as a homosexual coming out as a
- 50:45transgender. What is that packaged as
- 50:50bravery? Bravery truth, bold Fearless,
- 50:58right? Not only that if you do it, we
- 51:03might put you on a platform so that you can Inspire others.
- 51:06So now this is the, this is the trend, you know why?
- 51:08It's a trend because it promises so much reward.
- 51:13This is the thing to do, this is what people are doing.
- 51:17People are thinking well, how is it that?
- 51:19So many now are are into. This are giving in to this are
- 51:23practicing this And the cultures.
- 51:29Argument as well. They've been in the closet this
- 51:31whole time. No.
- 51:32It's because you've persuaded them by packaging, this kind of
- 51:37Lifestyle as something, that is virtuous and true, and good for
- 51:41society and, and good for our psychological State, and for our
- 51:45mental health, and The prevention of suicide and
- 51:49self-harm. So go be brave.
- 51:55Nothing is new Under the Sun, nothing is new Under the Sun.
- 51:59Here's Absalom telling his own servants be courageous.
- 52:03I have commanded. You go forth.
- 52:06Be Valiant and were echoing, the same kind of tactic.
- 52:12And a bunch of people who are void of Truth.
- 52:15And they are eating it up. And so there is a softening of
- 52:20the severity of sin through the language.
- 52:24Of deception that layers in a certain way that makes it more
- 52:28palatable. And that's why we have to use
- 52:34Bible language. That's all we got to just use
- 52:38the Bible as it is because there's wisdom the way God
- 52:41colors these things and describes these things.
- 52:46I remember, I told the story before, and I don't want to
- 52:49repeat it because I don't want to bore some of you, but I
- 52:52remember sitting at a large conference for ministers.
- 52:58And there is these. Ministers getting ordained, I
- 53:00guess. And so they were asking these
- 53:01young ministers, what they should do in preparation for the
- 53:04new wave of the lgbtq movement? And what should we do when they
- 53:08enter into our church? And this moderator when he was
- 53:12preparing for the questions to be asked instead of referring to
- 53:16homosexuality as a sin he said well what will we do?
- 53:20And how should we respond to the church with those who and he
- 53:23stopped himself and he says, who haven't it?
- 53:25Alternative lifestyle. You see?
- 53:32Blur it. Dim it, change it.
- 53:39It's more palatable. Bible uses strong words and that
- 53:44uses strong words for a reason. Life and death are in the power
- 53:48of the tongue. There is something that is
- 53:51either awakened or dead and based on how you present, What
- 53:54God Says. And so God uses against strong
- 53:57words again. In order for us to see it for
- 53:59what it is words like abomination.
- 54:04Words like immorality. And it's caused its purpose to
- 54:10shake us so that we can be met with words like Grace.
- 54:15And adoption. And love and regeneration.
- 54:23For the rest of the chapter. Here's what happens.
- 54:25We will see the fruit of a man who could not resist the
- 54:28temptation of taking revenge. And let's look at them very
- 54:32briefly here. Look at verse 29.
- 54:35So the Servants of Absalom did to admin as Absalom had
- 54:38commanded than all the king's sons are rows and each mounted,
- 54:42his mule and fled Panic, broke out, confusion broke out.
- 54:45Now the other sons are interpreting.
- 54:47What just happened here? This assassination as.
- 54:50Okay, Absalom technically is very close to the next person in
- 54:55line for the throne and so he's maybe this is a coup, right?
- 54:58He's now eliminating all his competition.
- 55:00Let's get out of here so they get on their mules and they jet.
- 55:04Then we scroll down to verse 32 after the news came to David
- 55:08about his sons being all killed and that was corrected.
- 55:13By who verse 20 32 rather, but jonadab the son of shamya
- 55:17David's brother said. So here's Jonah.
- 55:20Dad. The last that we see in him, he
- 55:22was the one who planted the seed in the mind of end and now he
- 55:25comes again. And guess what?
- 55:27He's unscathed. He's safe.
- 55:29One of the key players in this whole mess is, is here.
- 55:34He's still here, he's a problem. And the problem is still here.
- 55:40And then you scroll down to verse 36.
- 55:44It says here, at as soon as he had finished speaking.
- 55:46Behold The King's Sons came and lifted, their voice and wept and
- 55:50the King. Also in all his servants wet,
- 55:53very bitterly. One of the King's son, the next
- 55:57one in line has died as been killed by his own brother.
- 56:02And so they just break out into just absolute remorse and
- 56:08unbelief. Finally here, look at verse 37,
- 56:12but Absalom fled and went to tell my the son of a me, HUD
- 56:18king of gesher, and David mourn for his son day after day.
- 56:22So, Absalom, fled and went to guess her and was there three
- 56:26years gesher is where his mom is from.
- 56:30That's second Samuel 33. You realize that absalom's
- 56:33grandfather from his mom's side was also a king so he has Royal
- 56:38Blood on him on both sides. No wonder he coveted the throne
- 56:42as you're going to see in the next few chapters, but he flees
- 56:45now as an exile for three years, three years.
- 56:50So collecting all of these snapshots together.
- 56:53Here's the point that I want the Holy Spirit through his word to
- 56:55drive into our hearts. It's very clear as tempting as
- 56:58revenge's. It never solves a problem.
- 57:03It only creates more of them. As tempting as Revenge has, it
- 57:08will never bring the relief that you're aching.
- 57:12Soul is looking for. And the problems that it usually
- 57:17causes often falls on you. And God says vengeance is mine.
- 57:25He means many things by that and one of the things he means is,
- 57:29if I leave it into your hands, and if you take care of
- 57:31yourself, you're going to make a big mess.
- 57:32My son, you're going to make a big mess.
- 57:34My daughter, I know exactly how to prescribe the justice that
- 57:40will satisfy my Holiness and even your heart.
- 57:46And it's possible. That some even we're listening
- 57:51are harboring pain. That came from a mom.
- 57:59Or a dad. Maybe a spouse.
- 58:04What about a pastor? What about a group of people who
- 58:08church people? What about a business partner,
- 58:11who really blew it and costs you years?
- 58:17Of setback. from time to time, if not more than time to time,
- 58:23you are reminded This guy. This person really did a work on
- 58:31me. if only I could if only I could just let him get a taste
- 58:40of their own medicine. I just need a little bit.
- 58:44It doesn't have to be i4i if it's just something.
- 58:47Give me your toe. I'll be happy.
- 58:51I'm here to remind you tonight with this example.
- 58:56That you will not be convinced. After the matter that you've
- 59:01been healed. You only see that it was more.
- 59:09More pain that you invited more regret, more shame, don't
- 59:14believe the lie, no matter how great the pain is.
- 59:18Instead, let me conclude by giving you the advice of a man
- 59:21of God, and this is so amazing. I found this A few days ago and
- 59:27it's so touched my heart that I tucked it in like Mary does,
- 59:32right? She kept things in her heart
- 59:34tucked. It I said I'm putting that one
- 59:36in the Armory, I don't know. Lord when you're going to have
- 59:37me use this but I can't wait to share it and then a few days
- 59:42later we come to this Bible study, not knowing what the
- 59:44theme is going to be about. And that quote said, hey I'm
- 59:48here. So you're coming right out, you
- 59:50didn't stay too long. I'm going to read it twice and
- 59:54as I read it, just snap out of whatever you're in Focus because
- 1:00:00I know this will bless you John Flavel, he's not alive.
- 1:00:04I like a lot of dead guys. Those dead guys, had a lot of
- 1:00:07insight into the word of God and this man says something in light
- 1:00:11of what we've been hearing throughout this Bible study that
- 1:00:13I believe is a perfect way of putting a period mark to our
- 1:00:16time together. Here's what he said, quote
- 1:00:18suppose. That by Revenge you might
- 1:00:24destroy one enemy yet by exercising.
- 1:00:29The Christians temper, You might Conquer 3.
- 1:00:34One your own lust to Satan's Temptation and three, your
- 1:00:41enemy's heart. Quote suppose that by Revenge
- 1:00:48you might destroy one enemy yet by exercising.
- 1:00:52The Christians temper, you might conquer 31.
- 1:00:56Your own lust to Satan's Temptation and three your
- 1:01:01enemy's heart and that powerful all you would wish that Absalom
- 1:01:06would have trusted in God. The same way that David trusting
- 1:01:10in God, when able scorned him and he was ready to go and slice
- 1:01:15him up, I'm sure it would have felt good for the moment, but,
- 1:01:19oh, what would have happened to his name, his future, his
- 1:01:21reputation, his dynasty and a wise woman said, don't do it.
- 1:01:26Trust in God. I wish this man took the same
- 1:01:30advice. Who knows what would have come
- 1:01:32to his future? Who knows what kind of blessings
- 1:01:34would have fallen on him instead for the next few?
- 1:01:37Chapters were only going to see more turmoil and devastation.
- 1:01:42May God help us to forgive, may God help us to be liberated from
- 1:01:46that which haunts us because we refuse to just put it in the
- 1:01:50hand of God and say, Lord, I'm done with this.
- 1:01:52I didn't control what happened to me.
- 1:01:53I didn't invite it. I'm going to stop meditating on
- 1:01:56what I possibly did to bring it about and I'm just going to give
- 1:01:59it to you and continue to walk in what you have for my life and
- 1:02:02believe that you are The God Who takes vengeance.
- 1:02:06If you are that person tonight, as we close in prayer, I invite
- 1:02:09you to give that to the Lord and Trust in this God, the same God.
- 1:02:13Who saves you? The same God who answers
- 1:02:14prayers? The same God, who knows exactly
- 1:02:16when to defend your cause and he will do it.
- 1:02:21Let's pray. Lord, we have been equipped.
- 1:02:47with an obvious theme that you have woven in to these verses, I
- 1:02:53thank you from the bottom of my heart, for my brothers and
- 1:02:55sisters who are here tonight. Lord.
- 1:02:58Surely a blesses you to see your children gather around your word
- 1:03:03and to receive the full counsel of God.
- 1:03:06Lord, in this place, we've been reminded much again of sin, but
- 1:03:10we are also been reminded of the beautiful Promises of trusting.
- 1:03:15Putting our faith and everything including in the pain that we
- 1:03:19receive from others. The wounds, the bruises.
- 1:03:23The trauma, the scars. Low, we pause to reflect on the
- 1:03:29Forgiveness that we have in Jesus.
- 1:03:33And though, we know that Revenge can take on many faces, that can
- 1:03:36be just giving the hurtful word back after an argument.
- 1:03:42And he can even extend to murder.
- 1:03:48Lord help us rise above the flesh.
- 1:03:53Help us tonight as a reflex to bring every arrow to you to lay
- 1:03:58it at your feet to trust that you have the bomb to bind us up.
- 1:04:04To make us whole again. To give us thick skin, so that
- 1:04:10we can continue to endure the failures of others.
- 1:04:15And Lord, we ask that the cross would be ever before us.
- 1:04:19For if there is anyone, who is innocent?
- 1:04:21It was you Pure and holy you and you alone, and you receive the
- 1:04:27greatest Injustice that this world has ever known. well, we
- 1:04:31sit back to reflect on the the gems of Truth and wisdom that we
- 1:04:37have adorned, our faith with With a be intact.
- 1:04:41Would they be tight? Would they be worn outside of
- 1:04:45these walls and Beyond the moments of singing?
- 1:04:49Lived out for people to see the Christian temper.
- 1:04:53That brings true victory in satisfaction.
- 1:04:57Father, you are good. We love you.
- 1:04:59We love your word. And we worship you now and
- 1:05:03closing Jesus name. Amen.
- 1:05:06That stand Saints. Let's sing to the Lord together.
- 1:05:08Shall we?
