Latest / Health with Hashimoto’s - Thyroid or Immune Education for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease / How are you doing - Guest Post by Pastor Jason Lang
Transcript
- 0:00I have a bonus episode for you today, and it is not my normal bonus episode.
- 0:04Usually, when I'm doing a bonus episode, it is a book review.
- 0:07But on Sunday, I was sitting in church listening to this sermon that was so.
- 0:12Descriptive of what I think of when I say, how are you doing?
- 0:18The pastor, Pastor Jason Lang, he goes through the whole you.
- 0:23If you didn't know this, I go by Health with Hashimoto's, but the formal business
- 0:27name of my business is the whole you.
- 0:30Because I see you as a whole person. You're not just a body.
- 0:34You're not just a mind. You are whole.
- 0:38And that is what this sermon is all about. He goes through the different aspects of the whole you.
- 0:44They do differ a little bit from mine, mine, our body, mind,
- 0:47spirit, diet, environment, but his are very similar and so, so good.
- 0:52So I hope that you enjoy this sermon. It is a sermon, not a podcast.
- 0:57So you will notice that there's some like pauses that are a little longer than
- 1:01I would do on a podcast. I did not go through and edit those out.
- 1:05I just left the sermon as it is.
- 1:08If you want to listen to the rest of the sermon series, it's starting here in
- 1:12September, 2026, and it'll go for the next couple of weeks.
- 1:17And I will have a link to the show or to the podcast down in the show notes.
- 1:22They do have a podcast where they replay all of the sermons,
- 1:26and you can also catch them live or replay on YouTube.
- 1:30I hope you enjoy this sermon, and I want to know, how are you doing?
- 1:34Come let us know in the school community.
- 1:36Yeah, I hope you get used to this question, how are you doing?
- 1:39Because I'm going to be asking you this for the next, I don't know how many weeks.
- 1:42Okay, no, like seriously, like this is our theme is how are you doing?
- 1:47You see, when I ask you, how are you doing? I'm actually asking you five questions.
- 1:52How are you doing physically? How are you doing mentally? How are you doing emotionally?
- 1:58How are you doing spiritually? And how are you doing relationally?
- 2:03How are you doing physically? Okay. Are you eating?
- 2:08That's good. Are you eating, you know, the right amount? Also a good question.
- 2:13You know, like, are you sleeping?
- 2:16Like, you know, you're resting, you know, and stuff like, are you,
- 2:19are you moving, you know, active? Are you fighting off a little something,
- 2:23something? I don't know what happened to me last night.
- 2:26I was just hanging out, sitting down and all of a sudden had a little asthma
- 2:30attack. And I'm like, Like, well, that came out of nowhere, you know,
- 2:32but hey, these things happen. So, you know, but God cares about how you are doing physically.
- 2:39How are you doing mentally? Are you thinking?
- 2:45There's plenty of years in my life where I'm like, I was just plain brain dead.
- 2:48No, like seriously, like there was little thought happening up here.
- 2:52But like, how are you doing mentally? Are you thinking healthy thoughts about yourself?
- 2:58Are you thinking godly thoughts? Are you thinking, you know,
- 3:01healthy thoughts about other people in your life, whether they be with you here
- 3:07or, you know, or maybe they're scattered around or maybe you work with them
- 3:10or they're on the same team as you?
- 3:11Are you thinking healthy, you know, and kind thoughts about others?
- 3:16How are you doing emotionally? Are your emotions leaking?
- 3:23I don't know what happened. Well, I do know what happened. Last week,
- 3:25man, I'll tell you what, my emotions were just like super close to the surface.
- 3:30Are your emotions leaking? Are you, or are you stuffing your emotions?
- 3:33You a stuffer, you know, like, Nope, not going to feel that.
- 3:37Or are you an emotional exploder? You know, like you're like a volcano.
- 3:42You're like, I've been quiet for a long time, but you know, like emotions are
- 3:45just going to like explode out of you.
- 3:49Can you use feeling words to explain how you are feeling.
- 3:55Fine is not an emotion. So when I ask you how you're doing emotionally,
- 4:00if you say fine, you need to dig a little deeper.
- 4:05And if you did answer fine, we can talk more after.
- 4:10How are you doing spiritually? If you are a believer in Jesus Christ,
- 4:17if you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, that he has forgiven
- 4:21you, then you are in Christ.
- 4:23And as you are in Christ, God the Father looks at you and he sees that your
- 4:30relationship with him of how you're doing spiritually is perfect.
- 4:36Did you know that? Yeah. Like when I ask like, hey, how are you doing spiritually?
- 4:42If you're a believer in Jesus Christ, according to God, you're doing fantastic,
- 4:46like absolutely perfect because God sees us in Christ, just wrapped up in Christ.
- 4:54And he's like, I don't see what the problem is. Everything's going great.
- 4:58On the flip side we don't always see ourselves the way christ sees us,
- 5:02and so when i ask you how are you doing spiritually there's one aspect that
- 5:06says hey are you believing and trusting in christ and how god sees you the the
- 5:10other side to that of how are you doing spiritually is like are you,
- 5:15are you living in christ are you praying are you listening the best the easiest
- 5:23way best way most accurate way for us to listen is just to open up God's Word and take a look.
- 5:29So are you reading God's Word?
- 5:32Are you worshiping? Or are you just attending?
- 5:38Are you giving with a joyful heart or begrudgingly?
- 5:43Are you serving because you have to or because you're like, hey,
- 5:46I get to serve the Lord. I mean, there's going to be a ton of kids here on Wednesday,
- 5:52you know, we get to serve.
- 5:55And these questions can be asked and answered differently at different times.
- 6:02But how are you doing spiritually?
- 6:04How are you doing relationally? Our first relationship is with the Lord, right?
- 6:09And then we've got a whole bunch of other relationships. I got relationships with you guys.
- 6:13I got relationships with those people, you know, out there, you know.
- 6:16And then, you know, we got relationships with everybody who is still at the
- 6:20cabin and worshiping with us on our online campus. Got relationships with some
- 6:24of you, you know, know you.
- 6:25It was so funny. I met somebody who had been worshiping with us on the online
- 6:29campus for months and they came to worship in person for the first time.
- 6:32And they're like, this is just super weird because I feel like I know you really
- 6:36well and you don't recognize me.
- 6:40And then he goes on and say, your hair's really changed. And I'm like,
- 6:43well, yeah, it was so funny, you know, but how are you doing relationally?
- 6:51Are you connecting with God? Are you feeling close to God?
- 6:55How are your relationships with each other? Is there anger? Is there strife? Is there kindness?
- 7:03Is there openness?
- 7:05There's a guy named Dave Ferguson who does a, you know, Pastor Nick and I and
- 7:10Becca and a few other people, Lauren, have gone to the Exponential Conference for a bunch of years.
- 7:15And this year, what he's doing is he's taking most of these questions.
- 7:21And every morning when he gets up and spends a little time with the Lord,
- 7:25he draws them up at the top of his little journal, and he just kind of does
- 7:31a little self-diagnosis.
- 7:33Where am I today? How am I doing?
- 7:37And how is the Lord going to meet me there?
- 7:41He says it's been incredibly helpful to like start the day and just with this
- 7:45simple question of, hey, how am I doing in these different areas?
- 7:48Because then all of a sudden he's like, I make some adjustments to my schedule based on how I'm doing.
- 7:57And so for the next few weeks, we're going to take one week to,
- 8:00you know, to dive deeply into, you know, each of these areas.
- 8:03Today just gets to be kind of the overview and the, you know,
- 8:08the kind of like the snake peek into what we're going to be doing for the rest of our time.
- 8:12That's a few weeks. So how are you doing?
- 8:16It's tough sometimes to answer that honestly.
- 8:20I, different church, so you don't have to guess who it is.
- 8:23I didn't change the name. So Lynn, if you're listening, yes,
- 8:26it's about you and you know it.
- 8:29Years ago, I were just after worship. I'm standing out there,
- 8:33you know, shaking people's hands. Hey, how you doing? How you doing? How you doing?
- 8:36You know, and this, that, and the other thing. And Lynn walks out,
- 8:39is walking out the door and she beats me to it. And she says, how are you doing?
- 8:46And she had paused. And so I doubled down on the pause.
- 8:51People get a little uncomfortable when they ask how you're doing and you pause
- 8:54for a little extra time because then you, then they know, oh,
- 8:57this wasn't just a greeting. Like, hi, how, you know, it's like,
- 9:00oh, he's going to really answer.
- 9:02And so, so Lynn said, Hey, how are you doing? And I gave it,
- 9:06gave a little extra pause and I said, Hey,
- 9:09honestly, pretty crappy. Then she looked at me. She's like, that is so good to hear.
- 9:16And I'm like, thanks a lot, Lynn.
- 9:20You know, like, did you hear my answer? She's like, no, it's just like,
- 9:24honestly, it really is good to hear that you have crappy days.
- 9:28Like you're doing great so often that, you know, but like, it's like,
- 9:33thank you for being real and honest.
- 9:36You know like I appreciate that you know like you know when she's like I'm sorry
- 9:41you're not doing that you're doing crappy today but it really,
- 9:47it makes the when you're when you say you're doing great it makes that seem
- 9:51more real too when I get to hear that some days you're doing crappy,
- 9:57And so my hope is that as we walk through the How Are You Doing series,
- 10:05that we will take some time to be honest.
- 10:11Now, we don't have a choice on the honesty part because the Lord tells us not to lie, okay?
- 10:19We do have a choice on how open to be.
- 10:23You do not have to overshare with everyone when they ask you how you're doing,
- 10:27okay? You don't. You don't have to.
- 10:31Get into the weeds or something like that. But I do want to encourage us to be honest.
- 10:38First, I want you to be honest with God, because God really is interested in
- 10:43knowing how are you doing.
- 10:46Next, I'd really love for you to be honest with yourself.
- 10:50Try doing a little self-diagnostic for the next six weeks and ask, how are you doing?
- 10:59And then my hope is that you would be honest with someone.
- 11:04I don't know who that someone is. Hey, if you're married, really hope it's your spouse.
- 11:08If you're not married, please don't go get a spouse just to answer the question.
- 11:12Okay. You don't have to, that's not required.
- 11:14But like, you know, like if you're, if you're not married, please find someone,
- 11:19just to be gut level honest with and just start asking, how are you doing?
- 11:27And maybe maybe you've got a friend and you might i'm not sure where they're
- 11:31at with jesus but maybe you you've got a friend that needs to hear.
- 11:37How are you doing or maybe you've got a friend that needs you to ask them and
- 11:43then in that open up an opportunity just to invite them out as you ask hey how are you doing.
- 11:51Because believe it or not, like God cares about you.
- 11:56And yeah, and he cares about how you're doing.
- 12:00We have this bad tendency to just kind of like compartmentalize God over into
- 12:05like all he cares about is my spiritual life.
- 12:08No, no, no, no, no. God cares about you, the whole you, all of you,
- 12:16a holistic being, your whole person.
- 12:19He cares about you so much that that's kind of like his number one priority
- 12:26in his relationship with us is that we be in a loving relationship with him.
- 12:35Moses, you know, got to give God's people, you know, his law.
- 12:39Things got a little messy, okay, because it doesn't take real long for people
- 12:44to start breaking laws and things like that and not listening to God.
- 12:48And so, you know, God told his people then, you know, to take a lap.
- 12:53That was like, I don't know, that lap took 40 years. It was a really long lap.
- 12:58It was a really long lap. They got to take a lap through the wilderness and
- 13:01just kind of wander around taking a lap until they got back and everybody was ready.
- 13:05God cared for them the entire time, gave them all the food that they needed.
- 13:09Their clothes never wore out. Their sandals never wore out.
- 13:13And as they're just getting ready to go into the promised land,
- 13:17Moses gives them the law again.
- 13:20It's like Moses was saying, all right, guys, I'm not going with you into the promised land.
- 13:27So we're going to do this whole law thing again. Pay attention this time.
- 13:32We don't want to like take another lap. Okay.
- 13:35And then he says this. So if you have your Bibles with you, turn with me to
- 13:39Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy chapter six.
- 13:44If not, don't worry. It's going to be right up here. Deuteronomy chapter six,
- 13:48starting in verse four, reading in Jesus name, because it's God's word, not mine.
- 13:54Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
- 13:58You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind.
- 14:04And these words that I have commanded you today shall be on your heart.
- 14:09You shall teach them diligently to your children. You should talk with them, you know,
- 14:14when you sit in your house and when you walk on by the way and when you lie
- 14:17down and when you rise, you shall bind them as like a sign on your hands,
- 14:22and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
- 14:25You shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates,
- 14:29here in the reading of God's word.
- 14:32This is traditionally called the Shema, okay, which just means, like, basically here.
- 14:38And so, you know, when Jesus was asked by somebody, like, what's the greatest commandment?
- 14:45He quotes this, love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind,
- 14:51with all your soul, with all your strength, with every aspect of your being.
- 14:55What God wants is to be in a loving relationship with you.
- 15:00He cares about every single part of your being, all of your strength.
- 15:06Yes, God cares about us physically. He loves us.
- 15:11He loves our bodies. He's the one who made them.
- 15:18With all of your mind, with all of your thoughts, God wants us to be thinking
- 15:23God thoughts, not just me thoughts.
- 15:26He cares about what we think.
- 15:29Isn't that cool? Like the God of the universe cares about what we think.
- 15:36I have conversations with people that I'm not entirely sure they care of what I think.
- 15:42God cares about what we think. every all of our soul god cares about our our
- 15:48spiritual condition and and his relationship with us god cares about every aspect of our person,
- 15:56and god cares about our family he doesn't want us to just keep this to himself he's like look
- 16:02take these commandments this this word of mine and and teach it to your children
- 16:06don't just kind of like ah here you go no like teach it diligently,
- 16:10like really go for it, really teach it.
- 16:12And it's not just supposed to
- 16:14be like a little bit on like for an hour on Sunday or something like that.
- 16:17It's like all the time. Like when you're sitting down at the house,
- 16:21you're in the house and you're sitting down and you're talking about God stuff
- 16:24or you're, you know, hopping into the car and you're heading somewhere and you're going on the way.
- 16:28Hey, think about and talk about some God stuff.
- 16:31And as you're, as you're, as you're getting ready to leave in the,
- 16:33in the, in the morning, think about some God stuff and write that on your heart
- 16:38because the only one who can write God's word on your heart is God.
- 16:43And so as God is writing his word on your heart and as he is communicating to
- 16:46you that he does care about you, that he loves you deeply.
- 16:51It's amazing because he knows you and he still loves you. That's the amazing part for me.
- 16:59Like, like God knows me, not like just like that's, you know,
- 17:03that's Jay, but like knows me so well, you know, that he knows the number of hairs on my head.
- 17:10I'm not sure why he knows that, but he just knows. I don't think he has to like count every day.
- 17:15I don't think he's making any comments about the length of my hair or any of those sorts of things.
- 17:19I think that what he's saying, you know, like, but that God knows us so intimately
- 17:24well that he knows how many hairs are on your head.
- 17:27And if he knows that, what else does he know about you?
- 17:34Yeah, he knows your thoughts, even before you think it.
- 17:40He knows what you love. He knows your desires. He knows your heart.
- 17:46He knows all of your actions.
- 17:49Like Philip underneath the fig tree. Got no idea what Philip was doing, but Jesus knew. Saw you.
- 17:56Jesus knows you. Everything about you. And he loves you.
- 18:01That's kind of scary for me, to be honest.
- 18:05Nobody knows me like that except for God. Nobody knows you except God like that.
- 18:12And he still absolutely loves you, values you, just like values you.
- 18:21So as I was thinking about this message, I read through the book of Mark.
- 18:29And then I did some fancy searching, both in English and Greek and stuff like
- 18:33that, because I was trying to come up, like, who did Jesus ask, how are you doing?
- 18:39I don't know if it just, like, wasn't a thing back then or what,
- 18:42but did you know that Jesus never asked somebody, how are you doing?
- 18:48And yet, he always seems to know.
- 18:53He never had to ask because he already knows that well.
- 18:57Like, God knows, Jesus knows. And so Jesus never had to ask anybody,
- 19:01hey, how you doing? Because he knew.
- 19:04He asked a lot of other great questions. One of which is, what can I do for you?
- 19:12Check this out in Matthew 10. If you have a Bible, so you can turn with me.
- 19:16It's Matthew 10, starting in verse 46.
- 19:20And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving, Jesus was leaving Jericho with
- 19:26his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar,
- 19:31the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.
- 19:35When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say,
- 19:40Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.
- 19:44Many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
- 19:48But he cried out all the more, son of David, have mercy on me,
- 19:52son of David, have mercy on me.
- 19:55Jesus stopped.
- 19:58Said, call him. And they called the blind man saying, take heart, get up.
- 20:02He's calling you and throwing off his cloak.
- 20:06He sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, what do you want me to do for you?
- 20:13What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him,
- 20:17Rabbi, let me recover my sight.
- 20:21And Jesus said to him, go your way your faith has made you well and immediately
- 20:28he recovered his sight and followed him on the way whoa that is so awesome,
- 20:35why did jesus ask him that jesus knew he knows him.
- 20:40I mean in fact like now everybody knows i mean like he's not just a blind beggar
- 20:44on the side of the street but they like named him and his family you know like
- 20:48so that after this this gospel is written,
- 20:52people could go up and if they bumped into a dude named Bartimaeus,
- 20:55I'm like, hey, are you the guy? And he's like, what do you mean?
- 20:57Are you the Bartimaeus, you know, son of Timaeus who was sitting by the side
- 21:01of the road blind and then Jesus like changed your life? And he's like, yeah, I'm the guy.
- 21:05And then so when they drop names like that, it is for a purpose so that they
- 21:10could give testimony to who Jesus is and what Jesus has done in their life.
- 21:14A just life-changing encounter because Bartimaeus had a life-changing encounter
- 21:21with Jesus Christ right there on the side of the road.
- 21:26He didn't ask, how are you doing? He asked, what do you want me to do for you?
- 21:32So I get to ask you, how are you doing? Because I don't know you like God knows
- 21:36you. Jesus knows the answer. I don't.
- 21:40And so as a church, we're going to ask each other, how are you doing?
- 21:45And through this process, I'm wondering if you want to hear Jesus ask you,
- 21:50what do you want me to do for you?
- 21:53Because Jesus is awesome.
- 21:56If you read through the Gospels, you'll never see not one person who cries out
- 22:01for mercy gets rejected by Jesus.
- 22:04Not one. What do you want me to do for you?
- 22:07Have mercy. And in the process, a life-changing encounter with Jesus.
- 22:13And it is, it's completely life-changing because Jesus sees his faith,
- 22:18then heals his eyes, and then he just starts walking and following Jesus on
- 22:23the way, completely life-changing.
- 22:28My hope, my prayer for you is a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ.
- 22:34Are we willing to be honest and open with each other when we ask, how are you doing?
- 22:39Are we willing to be open and honest with the Lord when He says,
- 22:43hey, what do you want me to do for you?
- 22:46Because Jesus wants a loving relationship with every aspect of our being.
- 22:53Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, relationally,
- 22:59Jesus wants that loving relationship with every aspect of who you are.
- 23:06And He wants you to know that you are loved, that you are valued,
- 23:10and you are forgiven, all because of what Jesus Christ has done for you. So,
- 23:17are you doing? Over the next couple of weeks, there's going to be a, it's September.
- 23:23So September, if you've been with us for a little while, means it's name tag month.
- 23:27Introverts, relax. It's going to be okay. Okay.
- 23:31Name tags this month are going to happen. We're also going to have some more of the surveys.
- 23:35If you're with us on Giant Days Worship, we had these surveys that just kind
- 23:41of go through these, you know, these five things and just ask you kind of between
- 23:46struggling and thriving? Where are you at?
- 23:49We took the survey at Giant Days of Worship, and then we took the survey at Checkout New Prague.
- 23:54And if you look at the answers for both communities, it's amazing to me how
- 23:59great everyone is doing.
- 24:02Like, wow, all of the answers are like way skewed to the positive.
- 24:09We're going to share with you some of the results of the data behind the survey. We really are.
- 24:14And so to me, it's like, I'm looking at these survey answers and I'm like, this is amazing.
- 24:21The people of Lesore are doing awesome. The people of Henderson are doing just fantastic.
- 24:28The people of New Prague are doing unbelievable.
- 24:31I was doing Checkout New Prague with my friend Ben.
- 24:35And as Ben is kind of like talking through this with a few people and,
- 24:39you know, watching them answer and this, that, and the other thing and just
- 24:41saying, hey, is there anything you want to talk about?
- 24:43But afterwards, you know, Ben and I got to talking and he's like,
- 24:47you know, I wonder what it would be like if people were answering this survey
- 24:52at home, like without us standing there.
- 24:56You're not like standing across the table, you know, from somebody else.
- 25:01But what would it be like if they answered at home?
- 25:04What would it be like if they answered it like in the morning versus like at night?
- 25:10And he just kind of pondered that question. And really what Ben is asking is.
- 25:17The real answer. How are you really doing? We don't always want to give the real answer.
- 25:25So I'm just going to ask you over the next few weeks, try to be real.
- 25:31Real with yourself, real with somebody that you trust, and most of all,
- 25:37real with the Lord, because He loves you, and He cares about how you're doing,
- 25:44and He cares about every aspect of your person,
- 25:47every aspect of your person.
- 25:50How are you doing? And how can God meet you there in that place?
- 25:57Today, He's meeting us there and asking, what can I do for you?
- 26:03And maybe today is an opportunity for you to just kind of write a note in your phone.
- 26:08This is how I'm doing. Lord, if you could do anything for me, fill in the blank.
- 26:14Or maybe you wait until you get home and you write it down in your journal or
- 26:20on the back of the bulletin or something.
- 26:23How am I doing? And really, deep down, what do I want God to do for me?
- 26:29As we cry out to Him in mercy, just give us mercy, Lord.
- 26:33And that's exactly what He does in communion. So we're going to pray,
- 26:38and then we're going to receive communion and the forgiveness that comes with it. Amen.
- 26:44Heavenly Father, we cry out to you.
- 26:48You are good. You are awesome. You are high and lifted up. You are seated on
- 26:54a throne, not made with human hands.
- 26:56You are continually worshiped by angelic beings shouting your praises.
- 27:02And it's loud.
- 27:04There's thunder, and there's lightning, and some crazy looking light show that
- 27:10I don't fully understand.
- 27:12And one day, all people will say, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 27:20And every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 27:25You are our Lord. Lord, I pray that you would write it on our hearts,
- 27:30that you would write it on our minds, that you'd write it on our tongues and on our bodies,
- 27:36that you are Lord, that you would put your word in us,
- 27:41that it would season and influence how we think and how we feel and what we say and what we do.
- 27:49That as we go on the way and as we sit in the house and when we lie down and
- 27:53when we get up and as we're talking to our kids and as we're talking to our
- 27:57spouses and as we're talking to our friends, that you would put your word in us.
- 28:03Thank you for loving us, for caring about every aspect of our being.
- 28:09We love you.
- 28:11Thank you for loving us. And Lord Jesus, we just can't thank you enough because,
- 28:16it's all because of you and what you've done for us. It's in your name we pray.
- 28:21Lord Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
