- 2:13Speaker 3: And now, here is William Bendix in a tale well
- 2:16Speaker 3: calculated to keep you in.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Suspense.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Let him alone, chick.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Let him alone. Max, tell Chick to let him alone.
- 2:31Speaker 5: All right, Chick.
- 2:32Speaker 7: Just use him for a footrest. It ain't often a
- 2:35Speaker 7: fella gets a chance to wipe his feet on a cop.
- 2:38Speaker 7: Where are we taking him, Max? Oh, to the end
- 2:40Speaker 7: of the line, Marty. Then we give him a transfer.
- 2:43Speaker 7: A steel jacket transfer.
- 2:45Speaker 8: Get the picture, Chick? Chick gets the picture. When, Max?
- 2:51Speaker 7: When we get over the bridge. Yeah, we'll make Kevlin
- 2:55Speaker 7: a good cop. And then we'll dump him. Chick, I
- 3:00Speaker 7: said enough's enough.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Make it stick this time, will you, Max?
- 3:03Speaker 8: You're awful sensitive for an ex-cop. You with us, Marty?
- 3:08Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 3:09Speaker 7: I think maybe you're remembering that before they bounced you
- 3:11Speaker 7: off the force, you and Kevlahan once teamed together on
- 3:14Speaker 7: the Homicide Squad.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Once had long red curls, too.
- 3:18Speaker 9: No, Max, what I'm remembering is the raw deal that
- 3:21Speaker 9: Captain Brandt gave me. And the little murder rat Kivlan's
- 3:24Speaker 9: been just sweating to pin on me.
- 3:26Speaker 8: Marty, tell you what.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 3:28Speaker 8: You're all the time asking for a chance to climb
- 3:30Speaker 8: up in the organization. I'm going to give it to
- 3:33Speaker 8: you now. I'll let you combine business with pleasure as
- 3:37Speaker 8: a personal favor.
- 3:39Speaker 5: I'm listening.
- 3:40Speaker 8: I'm going to let you put the quiet on Kivlan
- 3:43Speaker 8: all by yourself. How's that? I didn't hear you, Marty.
- 3:48Speaker 8: I said, how's that?
- 3:58Speaker 5: How's that, he says. How's that? I leave it to you,
- 4:01Speaker 5: Captain Brandt. You dealt the cards for this hand. How
- 4:04Speaker 5: is it? Me, Marty Connors, turning cop killer. Are you satisfied, Brandt?
- 4:10Speaker 5: We're on the Queensborough Bridge now. Me and Kivvy. Remember
- 4:15Speaker 5: your tough team of Connors and Kivvy?
- 4:18Speaker 9: Only this time he ain't my partner, Brandt. He's my gunmeat.
- 4:23Speaker 9: I guess I should have expected anything. Anything at all
- 4:26Speaker 9: once I started to roll on my own. No holes
- 4:28Speaker 9: barred since the breakup. Just a lot of dirty infighting
- 4:31Speaker 9: from the day Brandt put the skids under me in
- 4:33Speaker 9: front of those newspaper vultures.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Morning, Chief. Hi, Kip. Hi. What are those reporters doing outside?
- 4:43Speaker 10: Hand me your shield, Connors.
- 4:45Speaker 5: What?
- 4:45Speaker 8: I said hand me your shield.
- 4:46Speaker 11: You're suspended on decision of the board.
- 4:48Speaker 5: What? You heard me.
- 4:49Speaker 10: You're going up on charges.
- 4:50Speaker 5: But, Brent, give me a break. I'll give him a break, Captain.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Break?
- 4:54Speaker 5: Tell me, Connors.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Where were you last night?
- 4:56Speaker 5: Well, I... I was... I had a date. At a bar, huh?
- 5:00Speaker 8: With a dame you never saw before?
- 5:01Speaker 5: Well, we had a few drinks and.
- 5:02Speaker 11: And what happened after that?
- 5:04Speaker 5: Well, I... You see.
- 5:06Speaker 8: I'll tell you.
- 5:07Speaker 11: You're the only one who doesn't seem to know because
- 5:09Speaker 11: everybody else read it in this morning's paper. A strange
- 5:11Speaker 11: dame got you dead drunk at a bar, rolled you
- 5:13Speaker 11: for your gun when you passed out, tried to stick up,
- 5:15Speaker 11: shot the joint to splinters, and was collared still carrying
- 5:18Speaker 11: your gun. Now, you know, do you still expect a break?
- 5:22Speaker 5: Sure, I expect a break.
- 5:24Speaker 9: In the first place, I was off duty at the time,
- 5:26Speaker 9: and in the second place, I've been on the force
- 5:28Speaker 9: 11 years.
- 5:28Speaker 11: And third place, if it was 111, Connors, I'd still
- 5:31Speaker 11: bounce you and bounce you hard. You want to hand
- 5:33Speaker 11: me that posse.
- 5:33Speaker 8: Of yours, or do I tear it off your chest? Here.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Add it to your collection, Captain Brandt.
- 5:47Speaker 10: I'm sorry about the verdict, Marty, but don't blame Brandt.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Oh, sure. Don't blame Brandt. Blame me. I'm the first
- 5:53Speaker 5: cop ever gets drunk, huh? Brandt don't drink. You don't, huh? Well, I...
- 5:57Speaker 5: Not a one of you knows what liquor smells like,
- 5:58Speaker 5: I suppose. It's a laugh. Oh, stop it, Marty.
- 6:01Speaker 10: What are you going to do?
- 6:04Speaker 5: Going out to tie one on. What did you think
- 6:05Speaker 5: I was going to do?
- 6:06Speaker 10: What are you trying to prove? Oh, Marty, look, you
- 6:08Speaker 10: didn't get jammed up because of a drink now and then.
- 6:10Speaker 8: It was a dame.
- 6:11Speaker 10: With you, it's always a dame. You lose your head, Marty.
- 6:14Speaker 10: You let him make a sucker out of you.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Lay off, kid. It's the truth, Marty. I said lay off.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Lay off. Okay, then.
- 6:20Speaker 10: Oh, Marty. Marty, let's not.
- 6:23Speaker 5: I mean, you and me, we.
- 6:26Speaker 5: How are you.
- 6:27Speaker 10: Fixed for money?
- 6:28Speaker 5: I got enough. And pretty soon, maybe I'll have a
- 6:31Speaker 5: lot more. Big bundles of it. I've already got a
- 6:34Speaker 5: call from Doc Williamson and Max Shale. What? Nibble on
- 6:37Speaker 5: that one, Kiv.
- 6:38Speaker 10: Marty, are you crazy?
- 6:40Speaker 5: Steer clear of them. Why? Show me why.
- 6:42Speaker 12: You know as well as I do. If you don't, well,
- 6:44Speaker 12: just ask any of the boys on the narcotics squad.
- 6:47Speaker 10: Oh, Marty, stop, Shorter. I can see where you're headed
- 6:49Speaker 10: just as plain as.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Listen to me, Marty.
- 6:52Speaker 13: No, uh.
- 6:52Speaker 12: No, no, listen to me. You tangle with Williamson and
- 6:55Speaker 12: Shale and no telling what can happen. One of us
- 6:58Speaker 12: might one day have.
- 6:59Speaker 5: To go after you.
- 7:00Speaker 6: It might be me.
- 7:02Speaker 5: You ain't on narcotics.
- 7:04Speaker 10: Narcotics and homicide don't.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Mix, huh? Mercy me. It gives his Sunday school. After
- 7:10Speaker 5: the deal I got.
- 7:11Speaker 12: Look, if you'll only mark time for a while and
- 7:13Speaker 12: not lose your head, the newspaper blast will die down,
- 7:16Speaker 12: and I'm sure the commissioner will.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Give you another... Nuts to the commissioner and nuts to Brandt.
- 7:19Speaker 5: This to him, look, all five fingers. And to you, Kivalan.
- 7:23Speaker 5: And you stay away from me here. Stay away, I
- 7:26Speaker 5: mean it. I'm going to go line up that job
- 7:29Speaker 5: right now.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Ah, so you're Marty Connors, huh?
- 7:38Speaker 5: I can use you. I can be used? It pays
- 7:40Speaker 5: a hundred and a half a week.
- 7:41Speaker 14: I need a guard. You know the set-up Max and
- 7:44Speaker 14: me are in. We got a nice club, nice customers.
- 7:47Speaker 5: A lot of them rich. It attracts cheap guns.
- 7:51Speaker 14: They figure maybe they can knock the place over and
- 7:53Speaker 14: take all the dough around the gambling tables. Now, uh,
- 7:56Speaker 14: you have a reputation for being hard. That might stop
- 8:00Speaker 14: the trouble even before it begins. That would be part
- 8:04Speaker 14: of your job.
- 8:06Speaker 5: And the other part?
- 8:07Speaker 14: I carry a lot of money and one or two
- 8:09Speaker 14: other things. I want personal protection.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Well?
- 8:15Speaker 9: It's a contract. But is that all I do? Don't
- 8:19Speaker 9: I get in on the big stuff? Not the gambling,
- 8:23Speaker 9: the big stuff.
- 8:25Speaker 14: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 8:27Speaker 10: The dust, Doc, the dust.
- 8:29Speaker 5: That's what pays off.
- 8:30Speaker 14: I still don't know what you're talking about. But when
- 8:34Speaker 14: I think you're worth more, I'll... See that you get
- 8:36Speaker 14: a chance to earn it. Until then, don't let your
- 8:40Speaker 14: nose get dirty.
- 8:40Speaker 5: You know what I mean? I'm a two-hanky man.
- 8:45Speaker 9: Hey, who's the long-legged redhead at the piano? Do I
- 8:49Speaker 9: get a chance to protect her, too?
- 8:52Speaker 14: I handle that myself.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Leave it strictly alone. Understand?
- 8:57Speaker 8: Sure, sure.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I don't blame you.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Not the least little bit.
- 9:09Speaker 9: So I went to work as a stalker for Doc
- 9:11Speaker 9: Williamson and Max Shale. I'd call for Doc every night
- 9:15Speaker 9: at one, take him to the club, and then walk
- 9:16Speaker 9: around the tables.
- 9:17Speaker 5: And that was all. Bottom of the heap. For weeks.
- 9:20Speaker 5: I wasn't making any headway in that direction. But I
- 9:23Speaker 5: was in another. Rita.
- 9:26Speaker 9: I learned her name was Rita. Sometimes she'd be there
- 9:29Speaker 9: when I called for Doc. But I might have been
- 9:31Speaker 9: collecting the laundry for all the attention she paid. Until
- 9:35Speaker 9: one time I rang Doc's doorbell. And she answered it.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Hello, big fella.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Tell Doc I'm here.
- 9:44Speaker 6: He's not in.
- 9:46Speaker 5: When will he be back?
- 9:47Speaker 6: Not soon. Maybe. Won't I do?
- 9:53Speaker 5: Didn't he leave word?
- 9:55Speaker 6: He didn't leave anything. Except me.
- 9:57Speaker 5: I'll... wait for him in the lobby.
- 10:00Speaker 6: What's the matter, Marty? Don't you like me?
- 10:05Speaker 5: I like Doc's watch and chain, too, but I don't
- 10:06Speaker 5: heist it.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Why not?
- 10:07Speaker 6: You're big enough. Maybe you take better care of it
- 10:10Speaker 6: than he does.
- 10:11Speaker 15: Maybe he treats it bad, leaves it around lonesome in
- 10:14Speaker 15: a sat-in-line case.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Don't you need a watch, Marty?
- 10:18Speaker 5: You can't tell.
- 10:19Speaker 9: Might come a day when I'll need the right time bad.
- 10:28Speaker 9: I thought about that watch a lot the next few days.
- 10:30Speaker 9: The next time I rang Doc's doorbell and she answered
- 10:33Speaker 9: it and said.
- 10:35Speaker 6: Hello, big fella.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Tell Doc I'm here.
- 10:37Speaker 6: He's not in.
- 10:41Speaker 5: You lovely, lousy, long-legged wretched... Marty, Marty.
- 10:45Speaker 6: Marty, Doc will be back in a minute. Where can
- 10:47Speaker 6: we meet? I gotta see you.
- 10:48Speaker 5: My place tomorrow?
- 10:49Speaker 6: Yeah, your place. Tomorrow. And the next day. And the next. Marty,
- 11:04Speaker 6: I'm afraid of him. I'm afraid of him.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:07Speaker 10: Doc, he's just a yellow slob.
- 11:09Speaker 6: I think he knows about you and me. We've been
- 11:11Speaker 6: seeing each other the last few weeks. I'm scared. Monty,
- 11:15Speaker 6: he beats me. Once he threatened to kill me.
- 11:18Speaker 9: Well, the next time he tries it, flash this. You'll
- 11:20Speaker 9: see how quick he'll fall here.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Take it.
- 11:24Speaker 5: It's only a little. 25 automatic. Put it in your purse.
- 11:26Speaker 15: No.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Go on, take it. Do as I say.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Hold it in reserve.
- 11:31Speaker 5: He raises a finger till you draw fast and watch
- 11:33Speaker 5: him retreat.
- 11:34Speaker 6: You know I feel better already.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Sure.
- 11:37Speaker 9: That's why they call you the old equalizer. Was it
- 11:40Speaker 9: about me he threatened to kill you?
- 11:42Speaker 8: No.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Who, another big fella?
- 11:44Speaker 6: No, no, nothing like that. He once found me going
- 11:47Speaker 6: through his bureau.
- 11:50Speaker 5: What's the secret? He wears a girdle? All right, then,
- 11:54Speaker 5: don't tell me. Here, have another drink.
- 11:56Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Marty, you know what Doc and Max do for their
- 12:00Speaker 6: really big money?
- 12:01Speaker 5: Sure, they peddle dreams. That's no secret, not really.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Why?
- 12:04Speaker 6: You know the set-up?
- 12:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just an arm, a yard and a half
- 12:08Speaker 5: a week an arm.
- 12:09Speaker 6: Well, I know the set-up. I'm the only one who does,
- 12:11Speaker 6: aside from Doc and maybe Max.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Oh, go on.
- 12:16Speaker 15: Max does most of the work. He's distributing the stuff.
- 12:18Speaker 15: But he gets a smaller cut than Doc does.
- 12:20Speaker 6: You know why?
- 12:20Speaker 5: Because before you can distribute the stuff.
- 12:23Speaker 10: You've got to have it to distribute it.
- 12:25Speaker 15: Doc's the buyer. He has the contacts all over the world.
- 12:29Speaker 15: And guess where he keeps what he knows? The address
- 12:32Speaker 15: is cold shipping dates.
- 12:34Speaker 2: How would I know?
- 12:35Speaker 6: In a little green notebook in a shammy bag hung
- 12:39Speaker 6: around his neck. That's why he hired you, Marty.
- 12:44Speaker 15: Oh, Marty.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Marty, do you know what it could mean to us
- 12:47Speaker 6: if we had that notebook?
- 12:49Speaker 5: Yeah. He wears it on him, huh?
- 12:52Speaker 6: Uh-huh, around his neck.
- 12:53Speaker 10: Rita.
- 12:55Speaker 9: Rita, listen hard. This evening, before I come to pick
- 12:58Speaker 9: him up, snuggle up to him. See if he can
- 13:00Speaker 9: feel that shammy bag. If he's wearing it, give me
- 13:02Speaker 9: the nod when I call from at one.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Do you follow me?
- 13:05Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, Marty, I follow you. Maybe I'm even ahead
- 13:08Speaker 6: of you.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I went up there at one. I rang and rang,
- 13:19Speaker 5: but no one answered. When I tried the knob, the
- 13:20Speaker 5: door swung open.
- 13:23Speaker 10: Rita wasn't there.
- 13:24Speaker 5: But Doc was. He would never be deader.
- 13:29Speaker 9: He was lying face down, what was left of the face,
- 13:32Speaker 9: on the bedroom rug. The room still smelled of cordite. A.
- 13:37Speaker 9: 25 shell lay near his feet. His body was still warm.
- 13:42Speaker 9: I know because I felt it when I reached for
- 13:44Speaker 9: the chamois bag, which wasn't there.
- 13:58Speaker 4: For suspense, Autolight is bringing you William Bendix in radio's
- 14:02Speaker 4: outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Okay, Harlow, give us a lowdown.
- 14:15Speaker 16: Did you invite Mary and me to the studio just
- 14:17Speaker 16: to hear you talk about autolight resistor spark plugs?
- 14:19Speaker 3: Talk about them? Why, by conniving Cornelius, we're going to
- 14:22Speaker 3: celebrate them. Because, Hap, you have the honor of being
- 14:25Speaker 3: present at the first birthday party of those super sensational
- 14:28Speaker 3: autolight resistor spark plugs.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Gee, Harlow, have you got a birthday cake, too? Have
- 14:32Speaker 5: I got a cake?
- 14:33Speaker 3: Why, I've got a cake studded with autolight resistor spark
- 14:36Speaker 3: plugs instead of candles.
- 14:37Speaker 9: Hey.
- 14:38Speaker 10: Pull the card off that nearest plug, Hap, and read
- 14:40Speaker 10: what it says.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Well, let's see.
- 14:42Speaker 16: It says, replace your narrow gap plugs with me. If
- 14:46Speaker 16: smoother idling, you would see. If you want more miles
- 14:49Speaker 16: to cost less money, cuddle up and be my honey. Signed, ALRSP.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Guess who?
- 14:57Speaker 3: ALRSP, Autolight Resistor Spark Plugs, of course. Try another one, Hap.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Ahem.
- 15:02Speaker 16: Uh, many happy returns of the day, Autolite Resistor Spark
- 15:06Speaker 16: Plug say.
- 15:07Speaker 5: P.S.
- 15:08Speaker 16: To cut down interference on your radio and.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Television, see that your car we is in.
- 15:14Speaker 5: That's a rhyme?
- 15:15Speaker 3: Well, now, you wouldn't accuse me, would you?
- 15:18Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Well, anyhow, half now that we've had our fun, let's
- 15:21Speaker 3: get back to suspense.
- 15:24Speaker 4: And now, Autolite brings back to our Hollywood soundstage... William
- 15:29Speaker 4: Bendix as Marty Connors in.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Break up. A tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.
- 15:41Speaker 9: I got out of Doc's apartment fast. Left it just
- 15:43Speaker 9: as I found it. Him dead on the floor with
- 15:45Speaker 9: a shell beside him. I had to find Rita.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Poor kid. She'd really be in a mess now.
- 15:50Speaker 9: Everybody knew she was Doc's girl. I had to locate
- 15:53Speaker 9: her in the chamois bag. I took a cab to
- 15:55Speaker 9: her flat and let myself in.
- 15:56Speaker 5: No Rita. That meant I would have to go hunting,
- 16:00Speaker 5: but not without a gun, not now. I went home
- 16:02Speaker 5: to pick up my police positive.
- 16:04Speaker 9: It was in my bureau drawer, and snuggling next to
- 16:08Speaker 9: it among the socks was Rita's little. 25, with one
- 16:13Speaker 9: chamber empty and a smell sharp as incense.
- 16:16Speaker 10: So I was being suckered again. Kivvy.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Kivvy, you old son of a gun. Come in. Come
- 16:29Speaker 5: on in. Can I fix you a drink, Kiv?
- 16:32Speaker 10: I ain't here to social, Marty.
- 16:34Speaker 5: No? No.
- 16:36Speaker 10: Remember I told you I might be sent after you
- 16:38Speaker 10: one day? Well, I'm sent.
- 16:42Speaker 5: What are you talking about, Kiv?
- 16:43Speaker 10: The elevator boy found Doc dead a few minutes ago.
- 16:46Speaker 5: So?
- 16:47Speaker 12: So you're the only one he took down from that
- 16:49Speaker 12: floor since 10 o'clock.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Well, Kiv, you know what to expect from a sleepy
- 16:52Speaker 5: elevator kid.
- 16:53Speaker 10: Why ain't you with Doc tonight?
- 16:55Speaker 5: Well, it's my night off. Kiv, you don't really think
- 16:59Speaker 5: I've turned killer.
- 17:00Speaker 13: Why not?
- 17:02Speaker 10: Oh, by the way, I know about you and that redhead.
- 17:07Speaker 10: Come on, let's go, Marty. Brandt wants to talk to you.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Brandt, huh? I should jump at that. I don't hop
- 17:13Speaker 5: belts for Brandt now, Kiv. You know that. As far
- 17:16Speaker 5: as I'm concerned, you and Brandt both... Shut up, Marty.
- 17:18Speaker 5: You don't make me. If Brandt wants to talk to me,
- 17:21Speaker 5: he comes here with a warrant yet.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Then I'll have to take you.
- 17:26Speaker 5: If you want it, copper.
- 17:28Speaker 10: You drawn on me?
- 17:29Speaker 5: Stay where you are, Kiv. You ain't bringing me in.
- 17:31Speaker 5: You big ape.
- 17:33Speaker 10: You trying to nerve yourself up to it?
- 17:34Speaker 5: Oh, Marty, Marty. Back, Kiv. A guy would think you
- 17:38Speaker 5: meant it. I do mean it. I swear I'll let
- 17:40Speaker 5: you have it. Not you, Marty.
- 17:41Speaker 10: Not our next guy.
- 17:43Speaker 5: That ought to keep your nose out of it for
- 17:47Speaker 5: a while, Kiv.
- 18:00Speaker 8: Six.
- 18:02Speaker 10: Sixth floor, sir.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 18:06Speaker 8: Mr.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Shale's apartment is just around there. Thanks.
- 18:18Speaker 15: Max, I.
- 18:19Speaker 6: Marty. Oh, Marty, I've been so worried about you. I've
- 18:23Speaker 6: been sitting here dying by injuries, Marty.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I didn't know I.
- 18:27Speaker 5: A sweet frame you nailed together. A sweet one.
- 18:30Speaker 8: Is that what you.
- 18:33Speaker 8: Marty, honey, it wasn't. I swear it.
- 18:35Speaker 6: I swear it for all that's holy to me.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Such as what? A dollar bill, maybe?
- 18:40Speaker 6: Marty, listen to me.
- 18:41Speaker 5: When I got to the docks, he was waiting for me.
- 18:43Speaker 6: He knew all about us. He began to hit me.
- 18:46Speaker 6: I did what you said, Marty. I took out your gun.
- 18:48Speaker 10: My finger must have slipped.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. I wasn't afraid, Marty.
- 18:52Speaker 8: I love you.
- 18:53Speaker 6: Not that no one would like me to say that
- 18:55Speaker 6: to them, but I love you.
- 18:56Speaker 5: All right, stop it, stop it, stop it. I didn't
- 18:59Speaker 5: mean to hurt you.
- 19:01Speaker 6: After I lost my head, I went to your place,
- 19:03Speaker 6: but you weren't there.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I put the gun in the drawer.
- 19:06Speaker 6: I thought it would be safe, and I waited for you,
- 19:07Speaker 6: but you didn't come.
- 19:10Speaker 2: So I came here.
- 19:11Speaker 6: I thought maybe Max would help me.
- 19:12Speaker 5: It's all right, baby. It's going to be all right. Now, shh, quiet.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Let me have the chamois bag. Rita, the chamois bag.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Let me have it.
- 19:21Speaker 6: I haven't got it, Marty.
- 19:23Speaker 8: I didn't even look for it.
- 19:25Speaker 6: I couldn't have touched him.
- 19:26Speaker 5: You're not lying to me now.
- 19:28Speaker 6: No.
- 19:28Speaker 5: It wasn't on him when I found him. He was clean.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Rita. Shh.
- 19:33Speaker 5: Who would that be? Max, maybe?
- 19:35Speaker 6: Max would have come right in.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Who is it?
- 19:38Speaker 10: Elevator boy, sir.
- 19:39Speaker 5: What do you want?
- 19:40Speaker 10: The lady, Miss Carter, lost her gloves in the elevator.
- 19:43Speaker 5: You were wearing gloves? I don't remember. All right, boy,
- 19:49Speaker 5: give him to me.
- 19:49Speaker 13: Hold it, Ma.
- 19:50Speaker 10: Nothing fancy now.
- 19:51Speaker 2: You're covered.
- 19:53Speaker 10: Okay, son. Thanks. Get back to your elevator. Yes, sir.
- 19:55Speaker 10: Back in, Marty. Go on, both of you.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Get back in.
- 19:59Speaker 12: Well, you've lost a lot of savvy since you left
- 20:01Speaker 12: the squad, Marty. Taking a cab here from the hack
- 20:04Speaker 12: stand in front of your place.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Huh.
- 20:07Speaker 10: Marty Connors and Doc's baby together. Well, the D.A. won't
- 20:10Speaker 10: have much of a job.
- 20:11Speaker 5: With this one.
- 20:11Speaker 8: No, I don't know anything about it.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Easy, baby, easy. He's got nothing on you.
- 20:14Speaker 10: A copper gun, Ratsy.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Who'd have figured it?
- 20:16Speaker 10: Get away from that phone, Marty.
- 20:18Speaker 5: No sucker, Kiv. We're getting a lawyer. You've got things
- 20:22Speaker 5: to ask. Wait for him.
- 20:23Speaker 10: You move again without I say move and I'll plug you.
- 20:26Speaker 5: You wouldn't, Kiv.
- 20:27Speaker 10: Try me.
- 20:28Speaker 12: You're just a cheap hood and I'm treating you like one.
- 20:30Speaker 12: The palsy stuff is through. You'll see Brandt first, you
- 20:34Speaker 12: and the girl, and then you can call a lawyer.
- 20:36Speaker 12: Let me at that phone.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Drop it, copper. Huh? You're covered.
- 20:42Speaker 15: Max.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Oh, Max.
- 20:44Speaker 8: Find him, chick. Make sure he's clean.
- 20:47Speaker 7: Okay, Marty.
- 20:47Speaker 8: Relax.
- 20:49Speaker 10: This will get you nothing but tears and moan, shale.
- 20:51Speaker 8: Is he clean, chick?
- 20:53Speaker 5: Okay, cold cock him.
- 20:58Speaker 2: All right, now.
- 20:59Speaker 8: What's it all about?
- 21:00Speaker 5: When I called for Doc tonight.
- 21:01Speaker 8: I'll get to you in a minute, Marty.
- 21:03Speaker 7: Talk, Rita.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Doc's dead. Good.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Who did it?
- 21:07Speaker 5: I did.
- 21:08Speaker 15: He showed fight when I told him to hand over
- 21:09Speaker 15: the notebook.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Rita, you... Shut up.
- 21:12Speaker 8: Go ahead.
- 21:12Speaker 5: That's all.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Except, uh, here's the notebook.
- 21:17Speaker 8: Ah, nice going, baby.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Got it at last. Rita, you've been stringing along with him?
- 21:25Speaker 8: Sure she has, if it's any of your.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Business, which it ain't. You lousy redhead.
- 21:30Speaker 8: What's he so heated about?
- 21:31Speaker 15: Well, I used his gun and planted it on him.
- 21:34Speaker 7: You gave her your gun for the job?
- 21:38Speaker 8: That guy's getting to be a habit with you.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Frame spotting the frame and then talked out of the
- 21:44Speaker 5: spot by a lousy redhead.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Forget it, Marty.
- 21:46Speaker 8: The frame is out.
- 21:48Speaker 7: I need an arm like you now that Doc is dormant.
- 21:51Speaker 7: All sorts of guys will get ideas about moving into
- 21:53Speaker 7: the business.
- 21:54Speaker 8: Look, here's the pitch. You gave Doc your gun last
- 21:57Speaker 8: night because he asked for it. He was afraid of something.
- 22:01Speaker 8: Didn't say what.
- 22:02Speaker 5: That's your story. Stick to it.
- 22:04Speaker 8: I'll set up an alibi for you for the rest
- 22:05Speaker 8: of it.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Leave it to me.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Okay? Okay.
- 22:10Speaker 5: You lousy redhead.
- 22:12Speaker 8: What does this copper know?
- 22:13Speaker 6: Too much.
- 22:14Speaker 8: We dump him right now.
- 22:15Speaker 5: You can't. I mean, he came in with the elevator boy.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Chick, take care of it.
- 22:25Speaker 8: Amy, you're leaving town in a hurry before they grab you.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Start packing.
- 22:28Speaker 6: All right, Maxie.
- 22:30Speaker 7: Now, give me a hand with the cop, Marty. We'll
- 22:32Speaker 7: take him out the back way.
- 22:34Speaker 8: I said give me a hand, Marty.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Going to play it smart or not? Yeah. Yeah, sure, Max.
- 22:44Speaker 5: I'm going to play it smart.
- 23:01Speaker 7: Well, I'm still waiting for your answer, Marty. I've been
- 23:05Speaker 7: waiting all the way across the bridge. Cut hard to
- 23:07Speaker 7: the left here.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Now.
- 23:11Speaker 8: When you cut hard, you cut hard, don't you? How's Kivlin, Chick?
- 23:18Speaker 8: Nice and dark, ain't it, Marty? This will do.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Pull up here. Cut the lights. I guess we're ready.
- 23:29Speaker 8: Well, Marty, Chick will do it if you won't.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Okay.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Stay a small time, Hood. Chick, roll out the cuff.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Wait a minute, Max. Kivlehan is.
- 23:39Speaker 8: Kivlehan goes. You don't pull that stuff, Marty. It's too late.
- 23:41Speaker 5: Not Kivlehan, Max.
- 23:43Speaker 8: Chick, roll him out.
- 23:44Speaker 6: Max!
- 23:44Speaker 7: Take your hand out of your pocket, chump.
- 23:45Speaker 8: We're two guns to your one. You're with me now
- 23:47Speaker 8: or else you go with Kivlehan.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Not Kivlehan, Max!
- 23:50Speaker 7: Chick, get him!
- 24:06Speaker 5: Kiv. Kiv, are you all right? Okay, Marty.
- 24:09Speaker 10: Didn't touch me.
- 24:10Speaker 15: You?
- 24:10Speaker 2: I'm okay.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Help me get Max's overcoat off.
- 24:13Speaker 6: I'm cold.
- 24:14Speaker 5: He don't need it no more anyway. Let's dump them
- 24:17Speaker 5: both in the back seat.
- 24:18Speaker 13: Okay.
- 24:19Speaker 10: That does it.
- 24:22Speaker 5: You want to take the wheel, Kiv? Yeah, sure, sure.
- 24:25Speaker 10: Oh, this is almost like old times, Marty.
- 24:34Speaker 5: You and me together.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:37Speaker 10: But I'm still going to have to take you in
- 24:38Speaker 10: to see Brandt.
- 24:41Speaker 5: It's a good trick if you can swing it. Huh?
- 24:45Speaker 5: I told you, if Brandt wants to see me, let
- 24:49Speaker 5: him come to me. Marty!
- 24:51Speaker 10: Marty!
- 24:52Speaker 8: Brandt.
- 25:06Speaker 10: How's he going to be, Doc?
- 25:07Speaker 13: Matter of minutes.
- 25:08Speaker 5: If Captain Brandt wants to talk to him at all.
- 25:10Speaker 2: I phoned him.
- 25:10Speaker 10: He should be here now. Give.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Right here, Marty.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Right here. You're going to be okay, Charles.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Give.
- 25:17Speaker 5: I heard the Doc. Where's the top coat I was wearing?
- 25:21Speaker 13: The one I took off, Max?
- 25:25Speaker 10: It's right here, Marty.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Here it is. There's a little notebook in one of
- 25:30Speaker 5: the pockets.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Narcotics ought to see it right away. Yeah, that one.
- 25:37Speaker 6: Holy cow.
- 25:39Speaker 5: Marty, you know what this is? What's in it?
- 25:42Speaker 8: Hello, Marty.
- 25:43Speaker 13: You see, kid, I told you Brant would have to
- 25:50Speaker 13: come to me if he wanted to see you.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Marty.
- 25:57Speaker 8: Marty!
- 25:59Speaker 5: He can't hear you. He gave me this, Captain. You
- 26:03Speaker 5: know what it is? It would have put him right
- 26:06Speaker 5: back on the force.
- 26:07Speaker 11: He was never offered.
- 26:09Speaker 15: What?
- 26:09Speaker 5: That's right.
- 26:10Speaker 10: It was a plan.
- 26:11Speaker 11: Right from the time he let the dame shoot up
- 26:12Speaker 11: the saloon with his gun.
- 26:14Speaker 5: You planted him with that gang? Don't look at me
- 26:16Speaker 5: like that, Kiv.
- 26:17Speaker 11: It was a good idea and it worked. And I
- 26:18Speaker 11: ain't ashamed of having thought of it. It was the
- 26:20Speaker 11: only way to get the goods on these dope runners.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Yeah, but I.
- 26:22Speaker 11: As for Marty, well, he was a good cop. And
- 26:25Speaker 11: after all, this is what he was paid for.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Thank you, William Bendix, for a splendid performance.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Mr.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Bendix will return in just a moment.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Well, I don't know.
- 26:50Speaker 16: Have you got any more birthday banter about auto light
- 26:52Speaker 16: resistor spark plugs?
- 26:53Speaker 3: No banter, Hap. Just facts. For the fact is, those
- 26:56Speaker 3: wide gap auto light resistor spark plugs are wonderful. They're sensational.
- 27:00Speaker 3: They're ignition engineered. And there's a type for every make
- 27:03Speaker 3: of car. Why, by Cornelius, everyone ought to switch to
- 27:06Speaker 3: a set of auto light resistor spark plugs right away.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And now, Hap, here's one more rousing spark plug rhyme.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Let's read it together. Okay.
- 27:15Speaker 3: You can tell the difference in your car with Autolite
- 27:20Speaker 3: Resistor Spark Plugs, Thar. Well, Hap, you certainly ought to
- 27:25Speaker 3: remember this Autolite Resistor Spark Plug birthday. And friends, here's
- 27:30Speaker 3: something for everyone to remember. Autolite means spark plugs.
- 27:34Speaker 16: Ignition-engineered resistor spark plugs.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Autolite means batteries.
- 27:38Speaker 8: Stay-full batteries.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Autolite means ignition system.
- 27:42Speaker 8: The lifeline of your car.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And now, here again is William Bendix.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 27:54Speaker 9: It's always a pleasure to appear on Suspense. This is

- 28:01Speaker 13: Let me out!
- 28:02Speaker 5: Hey, there's someone in that closet. Well, Jack Benny, what
- 28:06Speaker 5: are you doing in there?
- 28:08Speaker 8: Oh, hello, Bells. I, uh, you know, I'm glad somebody
- 28:11Speaker 8: let me out.
- 28:12Speaker 5: Well, I don't get it. What's the idea, Jack?
- 28:14Speaker 11: Well, you see, Bill, I'm moving my program to CBS
- 28:16Speaker 11: Sunday nights, and I thought I'd drop in and look
- 28:18Speaker 11: over the studio, take one out.
- 28:19Speaker 8: And then all of a sudden, all that shooting started,
- 28:21Speaker 8: and I hid in the closet.
- 28:23Speaker 9: Oh, well, I'm sure glad you didn't stop any of
- 28:25Speaker 9: those bullets, Jack. We all want to hear you next
- 28:27Speaker 9: Sunday night on CBS. Your program has always been on
