- 0:00SPEAKER_00: At the consecration in the Mass, the last words that we say are, do this in memory of me.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Those are Christ's words at the Last Supper, do this in memory of me.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And so I've known some non-Catholic Christians who said before they would,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: in their church sometimes have what they called communion,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: which was sort of a sharing of bread and maybe grape juice or something,
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: and they would Take it and they would sort of,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: you know, try to think about Jesus, right?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Try to remember what Jesus did for them as they were receiving that.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that's very beautiful and sincere.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And the problem with that is that they were reading the English and not reading
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: the gospel in the original.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: The original passage from the gospel Christ says,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So the original, as you can tell, is not in English.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: The original is in Greek.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And in Greek, Christ doesn't say, do this in memory of me.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: He says, do this
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: An anamnesis of me, as a memorial of me.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: In Judaism, anamnesis refers to the Jewish celebration, a celebration such as Passover.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: For the Jewish people, the celebration of Passover wasn't just remembering the Passover.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: It was entering into the mystery of Passover and receiving that mystery
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: into yourself, being present again, At that saving moment of history.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And so when the Jewish people celebrated Passover, the Passover was present to them.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: They received God's gift.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: They passed out of Egypt as well with their ancestors.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: They received the saving power of God from that moment.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And so what Christ is saying to us in the Eucharist is, don't do this thinking about me.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Don't do this as a memorial of me in our modern sense.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Do this as my anamnesis.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Do this as the moment when you will be present at my saving action.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: In the Eucharist,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: when we participate in this mystery, we are present at the death We are there.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: We receive that grace.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And when we receive the Eucharist, we don't just receive bread.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: We receive the death and the new and everlasting life of Christ into ourselves.
