- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: How you doing today fellas?
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: Doing good, man.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: How are you?
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm great, man.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm great.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: and doing good also can't really appreciate you coming on with us.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: We have talked to a lot of guys locally here, but it's going to be neat to get the perspective from somebody like you that has that national perspective.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: You've been around all the team, so looking forward to see what you have to say today.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely, and I paid attention to you guys' work.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_02]: I don't cover the dolphins as much anywhere that I'm going national, but I paid attention all the time and you guys do good work, which is why I make sure to make time.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: appreciate a cap.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: Now, before we get into the Miami Dolphins, man, let's talk a little bit about you.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: You cover this Super Bowl at 22 years old in your first year on the job.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: Right here in Miami.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you said, I mean, going to the Super Bowl, you covered it at 22.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what do you remember the most about that moment?
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, man, it's a real, I always call it like I'm I'm on a roller coaster career and I just don't want to get off like it's it's it's been a fun ride ever since I started I graduated college and I got to jump straight into covering the NFL and you know cover the Broncos when they want the Super Bowl and you start to think about.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody's career who may have spent 30, 40, 50 years covering a team and it had never got to a Super Bowl.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I got to do one of my first year and now covered five Super Bowl, you know, and it's an a tremendous blessing.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: I do think that early on, I thought that every team I covered won the Super Bowl because just my run and it was not that way.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: I covered a lot of teams that got nowhere in here, but I think it's been so cool, perspective,
- 2:56[SPEAKER_02]: you know I'm from Mississippi originally.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: There's not a lot of people who come from where I come from that get on TV and so every once in a while I get a kid who was similar to my age growing up and sees me on TV and says hey man you know really cool to see you I hope I can do what you did one day and I always try to remember the
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: the memories of when I was 12 and I was that kid wanting to be there when I was 22 covering a soup bowl and now at 33, you know, as a national reporter, not to like, forget the passion, forget forget the energy because we're all talking about a kids game and, you know, thankfully, I get paid to do it, but don't tell ESPN, I probably would have done it for a free.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: And that's awesome like you talked about you know how you felt like you'd be there like every year and it's funny you saying that because you hear athlete said as well When they appear in a soup bowl earlier in their career and then they realize just how hard it is to get back and obviously the dolphins have a long way to go to get to the soup bowl
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: we'd be happy with a playoff when it's some point here.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: But in general, how hard it is for NFL teams to get to the Super Bowl?
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: There's so many teams that, you know, you go into the season you say, Super Bowl or bust, but that just doesn't feel realistic to me because it takes a lot of things, a lot of stars aligning to end up there.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: Now it's so hard and to be honest like and I'm sure this is a problem at Dolphins fans want to hear so just kind of bear with me here.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: I think the hardest jump for teams is the good to greet jump.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: You know everybody talks about like hey you know good and from bad to play off team but like
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: I covered a lot of teams that struggle with that.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: I remember covering the Tennessee Titans in 2018, and they had just won a playoff game but still fired their head coach, because they weren't happy with how, you know, they weren't able to get over the top.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_02]: They had Marcus Mario and Derek Henry, and they weren't able to get over the top.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: So they fired Mike Mularky, which was, you know, mind-boggling to me.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_02]: He just won a playoff game for you guys.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_02]: The first playoff win in forever,
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: You fire him and then you hire my variable and my variable's got these crazy expectations and then he's leading them to a one seed and He's helping this Titan's team be an ASC championship and I remember being on a sidelines talking to one of the Titans for an office people and he was and I was talking about great the season was and he was like But we haven't got there and he was like it's so hard.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's so hard to stay here, but not get there and then two years later.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_02]: They're all fired
- 5:22[SPEAKER_02]: And now they're a tool and at the bottom of the NFL now and so like they got all the way there and they just never made it and you just think about how many teams that are trying to get that step and you just take it for granted sometimes I think there's a lot of teams that don't
- 5:39[SPEAKER_02]: and joy when they have it, you end up being a chief fan early on in your career.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: You end up in a Tom Brady Patriots area.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: You just think that everything is gravy until it's not.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think I've learned a lot in the league about just...
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: how much work, how much luck you have to have, how much injury luck you have to have, how much it has to work, who you're playing that year.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I just covered the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_02]: It wouldn't shock me if the Patriots never gave him, got back.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_02]: You know, just being completely honest, that might have been their best chance.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: Dan Campbell talked about it when the Lions made it.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_02]: He said that we may not make it back.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_02]: That might have been our best chance, and they have not been close sent.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_02]: So it's a reality of just
- 6:24[SPEAKER_02]: uh, a parody that makes us a fans love it so much, but it makes it so hard for these coaches for these quarterbacks who have all the pressure where every fanbase like when when when and they're like we're trying it
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like a season, you know, each season, you know, it can swing one way, it can swing another way, and it's been the case for the dolphins every season since you start covering them, as well, you know, from the Brian Flores era to Mike McDaniel to now Jeff Hathlete, like, they're in a transitioning phase.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: You said it on the insiders that they're transitioning from speed to physicality.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, can you like unpack that for us?
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what specifically did you hear or see from, you know, organization members, the players on the field that made you choose those exact words.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that you spend some time with the brass and understand what they're about.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: And I've been fortunate enough to spend some time with Jeff Hathley and John Erick Sullivan and talk to them whether on the record or off the record and to be transparent, I didn't know a lot about them when they first started.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: I talked to people around the league who may be gave me a few Senate scout and reports on each guy but I had never met them before.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: I knew that Jeff Hathley was the Packers defense coordinator by name, but that's it.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I couldn't have picked John Erick Sullivan out of a lineup,
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: for, he got hired.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it's really just catching up from square zero.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_02]: And what I really learned a lot is not only the green Bay philosophy, but their individual philosophy.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_02]: And you start to learn because you've got to know what type of players they're going after.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: What are they value, you know?
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think we're starting to see some early tent poles of that, but through some of my conversations with them, they really prioritize the team that can win and all of them.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that that's something that Dolphins fans loved to hear because that was their Achilles Heal and I think that you know some really conversations with halfly talking about the roster and some of it came Reformation, you know, you would talk to him about you know J. LaWaddle and some of these other players and speed and and it always get get deferred to what is their leadership?
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: What is their toughness?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: What is their strength?
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: And those were the three most important qualities to him.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas I think for Mike Medain was very clear.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_02]: He won't flash.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_02]: He won't play making.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: He won't timing.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: He won't conflict.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 8:47[SPEAKER_02]: Not to say either one is right or wrong.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: But it's just a different philosophy.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think early on hearing that.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: And then obviously going to go on upon the draft, going upon for agencies seeing some of the early picks.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously they were pretty quiet and for agency beyond Mulek Willis.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: But they spent their first pick on Cain Proctor.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, you don't draft for 360 pound linemen if you're trying to play, you know, a lot of athletic zone scheme blocking as it's not what you're doing.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: So, they're already starting to shift how they go about their blocking scheme a bit, you know, it'll be a transition, but they're shifting some elements there.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_02]: You start to talk to some of the players and how they're going about being coached and you start to hear philosophy shifts.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: They're being asked to do different things.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that 2026 will be a transition year.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, I can't tell you that you're going to look at the team and say, oh, there's so much tougher than the team that we saw last year.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that's what they're aiming for.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I think they're willing to sacrifice some talent.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: They're willing to sacrifice some speed.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_02]: If it means that we have the guys that fit the mold that we're hoping for.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_02]: are hoping to be.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm eager to see it.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think one thing that's really impressed me about this brass is, is there straightforward with their direction?
- 9:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like they do not sugarcoat, you know, I like covering Mike and Chris, but sometimes Mike, you know, Mike, what we'll talk you in circles.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_02]: You never really knew what he fully believed.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff Hathley's very direct.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_02]: He will tell you what he feels.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: He will tell you what his non-starred for him.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: John Erick Sullivan is definitely not going to be your friend, so he'll definitely let you know if you're not up the snuff and he'll get rid of you.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's, you know, there's a certain authority that comes with that.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: Now, if they don't win, we're going to be doing this again in three years, but I do like that the direction here is clear and to me that sets up for maybe the first time in two decades a complete reset of vision, which hopefully leads to something that's different than it's been the last two decades.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: And you're talking about a change in vision, a change in philosophy.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to make any of those much different from Jeff Hathley.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to see a lot of differences going from 2025 to 2022.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but how considering how big of a shift that is.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: how quick should we realistically expect that to really take hold.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: I figured there's probably going to be some things in 2026 that you can kind of see, hey, that kind of makes sense for what everybody's been talking about.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: But is it the end of 2026 that we really start to see this coming together?
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Is it 2027?
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: You said three years, right?
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: So we talked in 2028.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'd say I wouldn't go into this season with any expectations.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: I think that this year is completely the foundation year.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is trying to figure out which guys we can bring with us, which guys are worth keeping as we put this ship together.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: You notice they signed a lot of one year minimum deals.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think the hope is,
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: like they did in the first year of the Bryan Flores, maybe one or two of these guys will end up turning into a Zack Sealer and end up being someone that we said, hey, through the mud of that first year, we can now have them be a part of our mission.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: But most of these guys won't be dolphins next year, and that's just a reality of it.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_02]: So it's hard to say, hey, this is going to look like the fins team they, they won't because they just need to bodies.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: They got rid of a lot of players.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think right now, is them trying to establish the culture, try to figure out who they're core people.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_02]: And you already start to see it by who they're paying.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_02]: They paid Devon H and they paid Aaron Brewer.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: You know, these are going to be core players.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: They drafted K and Proctor and Chris Johnson among others.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: You know, those are going to be ideally core players for the team.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_02]: And then we're going to see about everyone else.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: And that's kind of what I would go into this vision of seeing like, hey,
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: Who's popping out that we can identify as part of the future?
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's got to start with milk wools, like they paid them two years, $45 million.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: They hope he's a part of the future.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: But how quickly do they know?
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: And really, it's only a year time frame because they're going to have to die the side in 27 do we draft a quarterback?
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, we got two first round picks.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I think best case in the area of their hoping, milk wools play so well that we're talking about should we draft Jeremiah Smith instead of Archmany.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: Now, you got to get there.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_02]: You got to get there.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_02]: Like, police got to play really well.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: And it's going to be hard because that receiver group, you know, it telewise just on paper.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: It may be the least talented receiver group in the NFL.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: Just keep in it completely honored with you.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_02]: Now, they got a chance to surprise some people.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they got a lot of people with opportunity.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: I had a chance to talk to you too at well as interview that'll come on and I feel network tonight Wednesday night and I asked him a little bit about the thought of hey no Tyreek, no water people saying who are y'all who's going to show up and he gave me some insight and why he thinks that people were going to be
- 13:35[SPEAKER_02]: more impressed than they initially think about the receiving room, but you know, I watched them sometimes early in camp and it was rough some days.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_02]: But then by the time they got to many camp, I started to see some of the promise and I think that's probably what the year it looked like.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't be surprised if that timbers really were rough.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, man,
- 13:54[SPEAKER_02]: let's fast forward to the draft, but then maybe in October, November, or even December, they upset a team.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_02]: They're probably not supposed to be.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: And then you start to see, okay, maybe that's the toughness that Jeff Houghly's going on and they can sneak up on a team.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_02]: And that maybe when the talent comes, that we can continue to bridge that.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_02]: So to me, that's what I'm looking for.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_02]: You know, can Malik show enough that you know, for sure, whether or not you want to keep betting on him, who are the guys that, you know, maybe you don't have it paid yet,
- 14:24[SPEAKER_02]: going forward and and what are other teams talking about you?
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's something going to hear around the league all the time.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_02]: Even if they're the talent gap, you'll hear off into coordinator to say, Amen, that team doesn't quit.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: Where that team is tough or that team, they'll say that and that's they don't have no time.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: So there, you know, I could hear Jeff Halfley say, hey, we want to be a tough team.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of people say that you can take that whatever salt, you know, grain of salt you want.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: But if the Buffalo bills coach, you know, they they lose 27, 24 to the bills up above low and I talked to the defense coordinator after and he says, man, that was one of the toughest teams he played.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'll know, then I'll be able to say, huh, okay, that's they wouldn't say that for any reason.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_02]: So to me, that's how I evaluate the year.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: And that's probably how I look in the lens of it,
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: This season seems very reminiscent to the 2019, maybe even the early parts of the 2020, Miami Dolphin seasons.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be at the Dolphin's, did not have their quarterback back then.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: As of now, Malik Willis is the unquestioner starter.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: You sat down with Malik Willis, one on one after one's day, OTA.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: We saw the TV segment.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell us what did it make the cut?
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: What was the most interesting thing?
- 15:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what's interesting is, I think there's just a different connection, a different openness that Malik has that just from personality wise to it doesn't have, like I learned that he actually has golfed with his head coach Jeff Haffley and John Erick Sullivan in his office, according to their Bobby slow again, he's trying to get that golf game right and obviously to a golf, but I never heard.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_02]: that it was connecting with the staff.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_02]: It was always him doing it on his own frame.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: I had talked about it a little bit in the interview about his work with the juvenile detention center and talking to kids there, but I also have heard that he's done three or four other community events throughout and we're talking about that.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_02]: He was talking about how he still has texts with his green bay group and how jealous they are about how I am playing in Miami and the weather.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_02]: And it's just a fun personality.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_02]: I talked a little bit
- 16:31[SPEAKER_02]: his cleats on on air as far as the interview, but he goes back to Atlanta, you know, his hometown regularly, and he's constantly training.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_02]: He's been bouncing back and forth between Jacksonville and Atlanta if he's not in Miami working on training.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I kind of referenced it in one of my hits, but he actually, while he was about to get signed, right at 12 p.m., he got a call from the Dolphins
- 16:59[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff Haffley and the whole crew and at 12 o'clock on the dot they say hey we want you to be here we want you to be part of it we want you to help us win this thing for many years to come and we believe in you and he hangs up the phone and he throws another 10-15 minutes of outrout and then his agent calls and says hey this is what we're going to be doing this what the number is is he takes the phone call his quarterback coach is like hey you want to just like put this training session for later like
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, nah man, I worry about it later, my agent's doing that, going back to throwing.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't actually talk into his agent and saying, yes, tell about it.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: Our later, because he wanted to finish the throwing session.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think to me, you learn a little bit about who this guy is as a person, what makes him tick.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: Now, none of that's going to help him throw touchdowns on Sunday.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it gives you a little bit of idea as a fan base of like, who's the man that we're getting here?
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: How is he going to work?
- 17:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I think,
- 17:55[SPEAKER_02]: What's so interesting for me is I remember being in Tennessee and visiting him and can't when he first got started And I think his head was this swimming.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: He it was so much for him.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: He's coming from Liberty To the league and it just seemed too busy.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think he had a certain calmness about him that I think will help him through the chaos that he'll probably get Throughout this 26 season
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that makes a lot sense.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think there's any questions about Malik as a person.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: But when you talk to Scouts and Executives across the league, what's the national perception of him?
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, do they view him as a long-term starter as he just a high variance project or is he somewhere in between that?
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a big risk nationally.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think they look at him having six starts and saying, you've got a lot of money.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of money for six starts.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the reality is he had a really good run in green bay.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: But it doesn't always translate.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_02]: I had one, you know, executive compared.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's like Matt Flynn, who got a big contract after really limited time and never ended up being the starter now.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of that trepidation, which is why there wasn't a lot of competition as far as the premium starter money from Leek Wallace will us.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's also just being transparent some concern about.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: Can his game play in structure in an offense that doesn't have the skill position players, you know, in Green Bay You've got Josh Jacobs, you had a kind of a bevy of young receivers that had some playmaking a better offensive line and and Matt LaFlor was one of the better schemers in the game That could really set him up for success They made it up just be honest pretty vanilla for him when he came in for Jordan love and so because of that
- 19:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, how much of that was because of him being in a bubble, what happens when you remove that bubble?
- 19:41[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, it's just you and Devon A10 out there.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, I think there's questions about that.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_02]: And Malik's going to have to answer that.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_02]: Because I have questions about it too.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I know that he's going to win outside of structure.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_02]: Can he win consistently in structure?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I talked to Jeff Halfley about that and he said like we spent all spring, not allowing him to play outside a structure forcing him to play quarterback inside the pocket he said he hates seven on seven and one on one drills for quarterbacks because it's not real you know you you want to have the what the realness is but he's he's really been trying to hone in on him the mental aspect.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_02]: and I think that's why at times can't look the little rough because, you know, if you're a playmaker, you're ready to always be ready to make the play.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: What can you do within the structure of Bobby Sloak's Office?
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: So to me, those are probably two biggest questions, the experience factor, obviously, and what can you do inside a structure and an offense that it's not as advantageous as green bay.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: So that's why he was available for the dolphins to have it.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: and they're taking a risk.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: They know him.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: They know more than we know.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, you hope that they've seen enough in him that he can capitalize on these things even when the elements around him are perfect.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, camp one last question before you head out, you know, you talked about being from Mississippi and now you're living in Miami with your wife and your kid is willing to how much has Miami or South Florida overall?
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: How has it become a home for you personally?
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: And do you think living in Miami changes how you see and how you cover the Miami dolphins?
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, for sure.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: It's changed a lot like I love Miami.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not in a rush to leave here.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: I think it would have to be something really special for me.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: My family to leave.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we don't have anybody else here.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_02]: Family wise, but it's felt like home.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_02]: I like the blending of cultures.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's been really cool.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know a lot about, you know, the Cuban community or the Haitian community or different hubs that really impact Miami.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: But now I feel like I know a decent amount.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and I feel like it's a part of my culture, even though I'm not from here.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: I love the access to the beach and the weather even when it's 100 degrees and I'm going to suit.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I would much rather that than zero degrees in the Buffalo snow.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that, you know, it's been a part of that.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: And I also got to know this fan base.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I've got to, you know, I was a beat reporter early on in life.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_02]: I was covering the Broncos and the Titans and out of Dolphins.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_02]: and each fan base is a really different, you know, the Broncos were probably the most intense base that I ever been apart because they expected wanting to have a certain demand.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_02]: The Titans, they were the smallest of the bases, but I often thought they were the most attacked in, the most like nuanced than wanting to know the information.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that
- 22:30[SPEAKER_02]: The Dolphins fans, they could be the most emotional to be honest, because it depends on what the moment it is.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think they can get very hopeful at the peak, I think the peak of them might be Daniel Harra.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_02]: You started to feel the city come alive, it's like, what if this is it, you know, but most of the time I've been here, I've been feeling the pessimism.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's saying now we've done this, we've seen this, you know, it's the same old story.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_02]: And you could feel that emotion in it.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, it shapes how you cover the team because I would love to think that I try to talk and talk about the dolphins.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_02]: Is if I'm talking to a dolphins fan.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_02]: And if somebody who wrote for the Cardinals watches it and gets info great, but I try to tell the information is if I'm trying to speak to you and I try to speak from the perspective of, I don't want to sell you BS because you've seen it for 20 years.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't want to sell you something that I don't believe.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_02]: if it's going to get you invested and hurt again because I don't want to contribute any more pain to what you've already got so yes it does contribute that but then I also you know can understand the highs of the moments of you know two of the tyreeque down the field and you're just like man so because of that I think that I'm more emotional and how I cover the team then maybe in other places you're more analytic driven or you're more tape driven because that's
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, definitely write about the emotional aspect of the Miami Dolphins fan base, but that's a whole part of Miami We're emotional people.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we started with the heat with the yannis acquisition.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know when the dolphin is good the heat aren't good or when the panzers are good the dolphins are good and the heat for our mealing team it's
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: If fluctuates a lot, you know, if the team is good, the entire city is going to rally right behind it.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: Cam, thank you so much for joining us and we hope to have you in the future truly, truly appreciate it.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_02]: Appreciate you, fellas.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Coach, we had a cam on as well.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what was, what were some of the things that, you know, Cam had said about, you know, the dolphins, you know, maybe even some stuff nationally that he had said that kind of, you know, perked your ears up a little bit?
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think the answer about Malik Willis.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it was a surprise, but it was kind of a confirmation that
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: people around the league do view it as a high risk and I like that he was talking about Malik Willis and talking about the fact that he's got to prove that he can win within structure because that is going to be a big thing for Malik Willis.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think that, you know, one of the things I was thinking of as Cam was talking there was that when he compared him to Matt Flynn for example,
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: we see a lot of these quarterbacks that come out and kind of let the world on fire in their first few starts and then defenses start to get film on them and then they actually start to game plan for those quarterbacks and that's kind of where you have to see quarterbacks be able to reinvent themselves in a sense they have to be able to show that even once the defense is is game planning
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: Specifically for them that they can overcome that in the six games that he had with Green Bay right defense is we're going to come out and play fairly vanilla stuff because they didn't know exactly what to expect the same way that Green Bay was running a condensed offense now that Malik Willis is the starting quarterback like he's he's going to put stuff in the scheme he's going to run all season he's going to put that on film through
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: preseason and early in the season.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then as we get to the middle of the season, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Malik Willis adjusts to those teams that are now game planning for him.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the biggest thing was in Green Bay when he taught when, you know, Kim was talking about, you know, the Green Bay, the Shanna Ants tile system.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: in those six games.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: He averaged 9.2 yards per dropback as well, and had the highest play action usage rate.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then I thought 36%.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's what Josh Jacobs, a good offensive line and weapons, you know, in the receiver court.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's going to be the same case.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be the argument is there that Devon Hain is,
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: much better running back in this scheme, but the packers offence of line and weapons were much better from Lee.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: So he said, you know, the big question is, can he play with the instructor?
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's why he looked rough, you know, he was playing with the instructor to get that done.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: And Jeff Hathley said, we know what he looks like outside of the structure.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: We have confidence in that we have that we know he has the billion that which leads me to the point.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's the single biggest difference.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: and how to a tongue-of-I-Lawa and Malik Willis are.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like we talked about how to a carried himself with the dolphins, how Malik Willis is carrying himself.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: Tua couldn't necessarily do that well outside of structure, and Malik will as can, and I do think early on ends of Tim Rocktober, it's gonna be a lot of outside of structure plays that'll give Dolphins fans hopes, you know, like, hey, when the play is breaking down, he's able to scramble five, six yards, so potentially, you know, make it a second and five, or second four, and easy, manageable, second down, or third down situation, as well.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the character and demeanor comparison,
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: between Malik, Willis, and Tua, Tonga, and I think that was more of an eye-opening thing where Malik Willis is much more interactive with the staff.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Tua was more sort of a closed off private type of person, get to work, do what you need to do, interact with the players, your co-workers and stuff, and then do whatever you were doing.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like Malik Willis interacting with the coaching staff, the players, other staff members on the dolphins who aren't necessarily
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's very demonstrative of the type of person, the type of leader, and maybe even the toughness, if he's able to do well inside and outside of structure.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think so kind of making a parallel here.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: You had mentioned before about Nick Sabin's comments on Caden Proctor about how when he's in the building, right, he's good in the building, but when he leaves the building, you know, you don't necessarily know what's going on.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: And not that I think the tool was anywhere the same in that sense, but I think that when you had to it in the building, like he interacted with players pretty well, he, you know, was grinding the tape, all that stuff, and probably, you know, did,
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: do individual work outside of the building, but you're right, when Kim will first talk about Malik Willis there, and the way that he's building those relationships, both with the players, the community, the coaches, like that is a different message than what we've seen from to it, and it's, you know, it's, it's, it's
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: above the the minimum expectation.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like the outside of the building stuff, you know, kind of felt like, and I'm not trying to get shot at two here because there's a lot of players that are like this, but like outside of the building, we just kind of minimum necessary, right?
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: Show up to the events you need to.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: shake hands, you know, Pat Babies, all that stuff, where Malik Willis really seems to be invested in that stuff.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like he is invested in those personal relationships.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_00]: And that can go a long way too, because when you look at the way things went south quickly with Tua, right?
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's where the cracks kind of formed in some of those relationships that maybe he didn't build the same way.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas with Malik Willis, the way that he's really building these relationships with his team mates, with his coaches, if there are struggles, you know, you talk about the toughness, and I don't I don't want to say I call it toughness, but like I feel like
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: others, players, coaches may have a little more leniency with somebody that they've really built that relationship with, where that they really trust outside the building, as opposed to somebody that's just a teammate inside the building.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: But he's more so leaning into it more, because he has his people in the building.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's got Jeff Hathen and John Erick Sullivan, the two top-most decision
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: He's really from the sounds of it at least from what we're hearing.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's really going into it, you know, he's investing his time.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's investing his energy into the off season and building that relationship, building that character and having that chemistry where it's gonna be needed in those late games in October, November, December, in the cold and Buffalo.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's gonna be talking to Tu-Tu-Awa.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I need you to run this route.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: You see this cover too.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: I need you to run this route.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'll go ahead and tip it over.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: and see what Bell is doing on the other side to see if maybe you guys can communicate and make that change.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I do think the payoff will show into the season.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't know if that will be enough to get them, you know, better than what we saw in the 2019, or at least the 2020 season in what was, you know, a transition and re-tooling here.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: Cause I think the big thing that we're both gonna be doing coach into the season is just drawing that parallel between, you know, a brand new head coach,
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: A new quarterback, I'll be he's not a rookie quarterback, but a quarterback that was brought in that was selected by them, but also with a new general manager right there are parallels, but there are also differences as well you have a lot of rookies, you know 13 rookies and then 20 27 you might have eight to maybe nine more as well.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's really build out the build out the team.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's what they try to do in 2021 and 2022 it failed.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that's an important thing too that Cam talked about there that a lot of these guys that are in the building now are just filling the roster right there are one of your guys that you're hoping to get a couple of guys that.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_00]: you know, are signed to future contracts after this year.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that next year's roster, you're still going to see a big turnover in that.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: But hopefully, you know, next year is, I don't know, 20% less than what we saw this year.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then 20% less than next year until you get three or four years down the road.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: And there is a lot less turnover on the roster.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think that
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at the players that are out there, you know, Cam Wolf is right on the money that we shouldn't go into this season with any kind of win-loss expectations.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think he made a great point that, you know, the change that you're hoping to see,
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: is the late season stuff, right?
- 33:10[SPEAKER_00]: You want to be able to take a picture of what it looks like in September versus a picture of what it looks like in December.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: And you want to be able to see some noticeable growth over that time frame.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: You want to be able to identify a few players that you can say, hey, these are guys that we need to prioritize bringing back in the off season.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's not going to be 20 or 30 guys on one of your contracts, right?
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: We're probably talking.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: More like five or ten guys that we've kind of singled out.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: We've said, hey, these guys need to be a part of the team in 2027 as well.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Coach.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for being my gracious co-host.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: And as always, you don't stick with us here on Skyrim and Finn's part of the threat per carry podcast also part of the five reasons sports and over as always.
