- 0:00Jenn: Hey everyone, and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday with the Travel Mug Podcast.
- 0:05Jenn: How are you doing today, Meggan?
- 0:07Meggan: I'm lovely.
- 0:08Meggan: You know, it's still summertime, we can't complain.
- 0:11Jenn: Can't complain.
- 0:12Jenn: So I was recently reading an article on Pocket and I'll, I'll link the article in the show notes so people can also read it.
- 0:21Jenn: But the article was Seven Tips to Create Happier Travel Memories, which I thought was interesting.
- 0:28Meggan: Mm-hmm.
- 0:29Jenn: And I thought maybe we could discuss them a bit.
- 0:31Meggan: I love that.
- 0:32Jenn: All right, so the first tip was go to a new place every year.
- 0:37Jenn: They say the quick route to making new memories is new experiences, and I agree with that, and I feel like you can also have new experiences in familiar places as well.
- 0:49Jenn: So I just don't want it to like, put you off visiting your favorite places.
- 0:56Meggan: Mm-hmm.
- 0:56Jenn: I mean what did, what do you think about that, Meggan?
- 0:59Meggan: As we all know, we go to Bar Harbor every year.
- 1:02Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:02Meggan: So, However, I have to say besides that, we are, I don't even know of anywhere else we've repeated.
- 1:10Meggan: We are not repeat travelers.
- 1:12Meggan: I do want new experiences.
- 1:15Meggan: Now, next year we're likely going back to Iceland, but of course we've not seen it all, so I may intend to have new experience.
- 1:21Meggan: Isn't.
- 1:21Meggan: In a similar country I've been to, but I'm not a repeat traveler.
- 1:25Meggan: I don't wanna go back to the same resort.
- 1:27Meggan: I don't wanna do any of the things.
- 1:29Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:29Meggan: I do want new experiences, I guess, besides Bar Harbor.
- 1:32Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:33Jenn: I mean, I think we're similar like Disney obviously, as our, our repeat spot, but otherwise we haven't done a whole lot.
- 1:42Meggan: Of course, there's so much of the world to see.
- 1:44Jenn: Yeah.
- 1:45Jenn: All right.
- 1:45Jenn: So the next tip is to leave your comfort zone, which to me is very much like the similar tip to number one, right?
- 1:54Meggan: Yeah.
- 1:54Jenn: But they say people remember emotions.
- 1:58Jenn: So when you do something that frightens you a little bit, it gets your adrenaline pumping.
- 2:04Jenn: And to me, I'm like, sure, like those things are memorable, but I don't think you have to go like skydiving or do like an extreme sport like traveling somewhere new can literally be leaving your comfort zone.
- 2:17Jenn: So I guess,
- 2:18Meggan: well, that's what I was just gonna say.
- 2:19Meggan: That's kind of different for everyone.
- 2:21Meggan: Everybody's comfort zone is different.
- 2:23Meggan: So yeah, like whatever that means for you.
- 2:26Meggan: But I do agree, like doing something a little different for you could be really very memorable.
- 2:33Meggan: So I mean, I agree, but that could be also be something small and still memorable.
- 2:37Meggan: So it doesn't have to be, and nor will it ever be for me skydiving.
- 2:41Jenn: Yeah.
- 2:43Meggan: My husband's done it twice and I'm just like, you did it once for me and once for you.
- 2:47Jenn: Yeah.
- 2:48Jenn: We're good.
- 2:48Jenn: Check mark.
- 2:49Meggan: Yay.
- 2:51Jenn: All right.
- 2:51Jenn: The next tip is to engage all of your senses and this one, I believe for sure.
- 2:55Jenn: So take your time to listen, to like taste the food if you're eating, take in the scenery without looking at it through the screen of your phone.
- 3:06Jenn: Hmm.
- 3:07Jenn: Yes.
- 3:07Meggan: Oh yeah.
- 3:07Jenn: No, notes..
- 3:09Jenn: Perfect.
- 3:10Meggan: I completely agree.
- 3:11Meggan: Like I always like when I'm traveling, love to post photos with comments and like, so it looks like, okay, well she just took pictures all day.
- 3:18Meggan: Not the case at all.
- 3:20Meggan: There's so many moments where I'm just like in awe, like hands down, like just mouth agape.
- 3:26Meggan: I'm sure it's lovely, but like just literally looking around and or taste like it says, tasting the food, whatever.
- 3:32Meggan: Like otherwise, why are you there?
- 3:35Jenn: Mm-hmm.
- 3:36Jenn: Yes.
- 3:37Jenn: So their next tip is to buy the souvenir.
- 3:40Jenn: And I agree.
- 3:41Jenn: I am drinking out of my mug from Disneyland Paris from 2015, and I do love having these reminders that I use like in my everyday life.
- 3:51Jenn: So when I get the mug out of the cupboard, I can kind of think about my day that I had a Disneyland paris.
- 3:57Meggan: There you go.
- 3:58Meggan: Love that.
- 3:59Jenn: All right, the last tip?
- 4:01Jenn: Nope, not the last tip.
- 4:02Jenn: We're only on number five.
- 4:03Jenn: Jenn.
- 4:04Jenn: Learn to count.
- 4:06Meggan: It's been, it's been hot today.
- 4:08Meggan: You, when you get a pass,
- 4:10Jenn: the next tip is to end the trip on a high note.
- 4:15Jenn: So psychologist Daniel Kahneman developed the peak end theory, which proposes that we remember experiences by their most intense moment and how they ended.
- 4:27Jenn: So they proposed to maybe book an amazing restaurant or do something that you're really looking forward to at the near the end of your trip.
- 4:34Jenn: Which I thought was interesting.
- 4:36Meggan: I've never pondered that before.
- 4:38Meggan: No, I really haven't thought, like, how are we gonna end this?
- 4:41Meggan: Cuz I think obviously you're, you're quite caught up in planning the middle.
- 4:46Jenn: Yeah.
- 4:47Meggan: Like the end is just sort of like whatever, but however, I mean, sometimes we do that by accident, but I guess I've never really specifically thought let's do something at the end to make it.
- 4:58Meggan: I'm, I'm gonna try that next time.
- 5:01Jenn: Report back.
- 5:02Meggan: Will do, will do.
- 5:03Jenn: The next tip is to print your photos, and we agree, we've talked about this before.
- 5:08Jenn: Pick a few of your favorites and put them up in your house, even if it's on the fridge, to help you relive the moments that you were traveling.
- 5:17Meggan: Yeah.
- 5:18Jenn: And lastly, don't be afraid of things going wrong.
- 5:22Jenn: Struggles make better travel stories.
- 5:24Jenn: And it is true.
- 5:25Jenn: And whenever we've had a difficult day traveling, I usually tell myself someday we'll laugh about this.
- 5:33Jenn: And usually it's true.
- 5:36Meggan: Usually.
- 5:37Meggan: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 5:38Meggan: And I mean, you also can't go into your days while traveling scared of something going wrong.
- 5:44Meggan: So if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen regardless, and you just have to obviously, hopefully it's nothing too bad.
- 5:50Jenn: Yeah.
- 5:50Meggan: But just like try to make the most of it.
- 5:52Meggan: And you're right, likely it will be a story to tell someday.
- 5:55Jenn: Mm-hmm.
- 5:57Jenn: All right.
- 5:58Jenn: So I want to know what you, the listeners think, do you agree with these?
- 6:03Jenn: Is there anything you would add?
- 6:05Jenn: Let us know
- 6:06Meggan: hmm,
