- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It. All starts right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the three O take presenter by Sea Kick.
- 0:17This episode 469 I'll be your host Kyle Corden.
- 0:20I'm here with my Co host Nate Reyes and Nate
- 0:37KC Tony. K go, the vocals warmed up.
- 0:47I was going to say, something real big happened this evening.
- 0:53Huge. Monumental.
- 0:55Perfect timing. He's looking out for us.
- 0:59Hey I. You know, I was actually
- 1:01thinking about it tonight. I think I actually owe you for
- 1:04this, You know, You know, it's crazy.
- 1:07It's crazy the way that kind of works sometimes, No.
- 1:11So a little quick run down here. We apparently our Internet cable
- 1:20got severed underground on like while we were out of town last
- 1:26week. Throw them under the bus.
- 1:28So I get help. No, I don't, I don't know who it
- 1:30is or who is responsible entirely.
- 1:31I have, I have, I haven't an inkling, but I, I'm, I don't
- 1:35know entirely. Anyway, new neighbors, we were
- 1:40on a some they're going to be knocking on on our door here
- 1:42tomorrow. Anyway, could not record on
- 1:45Sunday like we usually do Sunday night.
- 1:47So we had to push it to Monday meeting.
- 1:51We had to push our usual Wednesday recording back to
- 1:53today, Thursday night, right? So then Nate hits me up today
- 1:57and goes, hey, I want to be home from work a little early.
- 2:01Why don't we hop on a record? And I was like, all right,
- 2:04sounds good. And then some, some scheduling
- 2:06things popped up and we said now we're just going to have to go
- 2:09with the original plan record at night.
- 2:11And then Shohei Otani shows up on the scene and says, boys, I
- 2:17gotcha. I know you guys were talking,
- 2:19planning on talking about some teams that have maybe clinched
- 2:22or or punched their tickets to the postseason, but I've got a
- 2:25better story for you, arguably the best story at this point in
- 2:32time, at this point in the season that you could possibly
- 2:35run with. We could argue.
- 2:38We could argue that. And boy did he do it.
- 2:41It. I mean, what the Unicorn thing
- 2:47gets thrown out there a lot. The the greatest of all time,
- 2:49the greatest we've ever seen gets thrown out there a lot.
- 2:51But like, at what point do we look at what Shohei Otani's
- 2:56doing and in the more importantly, in the way that
- 2:58he's doing it and go this just truly might, like, we quite
- 3:06literally may never see a guy like this again.
- 3:09Because to do what he did to, to establish the 5050 club in the
- 3:16way that he did it, nobody does that.
- 3:19The only person in baseball that's doing that is Shohei
- 3:22Otani. I'm convinced I'm people may
- 3:24disagree with me. I I'd like to see it otherwise
- 3:28because I I don't think it's possible.
- 3:32I mean, now, now it's, it's a little more possible than it's
- 3:39ever been. I'm First off, I'm not going to
- 3:43be in the camp that just tears down what we just witnessed by
- 3:48just slapping the it's because of rule changes on this.
- 3:56But I think because of the rule changes, it now opens up
- 3:59opportunities for other players like this.
- 4:03However, like you said, Unicorn dude, like he's he's not he's
- 4:07not normal. This is not normal.
- 4:10This is insane. It's insane that he has affected
- 4:16the game in this way. And I think you have amazing
- 4:23players that come through. You have generational talent
- 4:27that comes through. You have players that become the
- 4:31face of a franchise for decades, sometimes or maybe even forever.
- 4:37You have players that come through and they win multiple
- 4:40MVPS. You have players that win
- 4:42multiple championships. You have players that can do one
- 4:45category really well. It's super, super, super rare to
- 4:53have a player come in and change the way baseball is played
- 4:59throughout the world at different levels.
- 5:06You see what I'm saying? Like what he's doing is
- 5:09inspiring other two way players in a way that we haven't seen
- 5:14before. It's inspiring 5 tool players.
- 5:19It's inspiring coaches to be accepting of these talents and
- 5:23not making players choose one or the other and bail on the other.
- 5:30That to me is what has to be part of the greatest ever
- 5:37conversation in argument. And and you can't compare him
- 5:43the way you compare other players because of how different
- 5:46he is. So are we going to look at
- 5:52numbers at the end of this and say that he holds all of these
- 5:56records at each one? I don't know.
- 5:59Most likely not. But at the same time, like we
- 6:03are going to be able to look at what he has done for the game as
- 6:06a whole. And I don't know, dude, like I
- 6:14you got to go back to like people like going through the
- 6:18the frontier, you know, in the different ways, right, Like the
- 6:22way Jackie Robinson went through it in certain ways, the way
- 6:26Willie Mays went through it in certain way, like certain
- 6:29aspects of the game or like those guys are at the top of the
- 6:32mountain. But sometimes we'll go twenty
- 6:3530-40 years before seeing it again.
- 6:39And we're we're witnessing it now.
- 6:41We're seeing it now. And I'm not just going to sit
- 6:44here and like, I feel like it's strange to dumb it down to 1
- 6:48great season and just like compacted into a 5050, yeah,
- 6:53that's fantastic. Like that, that's amazing to see
- 6:56and watch. But like, it has to be a part of
- 7:01the rest of the argument. The rest of the conversation is
- 7:04everything else he's doing for baseball.
- 7:06Then the way it just ripple effects across this game, like
- 7:10whether you're a Dodger fan or not, whether you're, I don't, I
- 7:14don't know anyone that's not a show hey fan.
- 7:15But whether you're a show hey fan or not, you got to, you got
- 7:20to accept that dude, do you like you got to take that in?
- 7:23I love Aaron Judge. I think Aaron Judge is super
- 7:27dope and I love watching them all the time.
- 7:30This is just different. Well, you you talk about what
- 7:35the conversation is going to be after show.
- 7:37Hey, calls it a career. I think with the shift in
- 7:42narrative, the shift in focus, emphasis on players who are
- 7:48eligible for the Hall of Fame or just have, have, have put forth
- 7:54a body of work that's worth admiring whether or not they're
- 7:56eligible for the Hall of Fame or not.
- 7:57If, if they've put forth a career that's like, wow, that we
- 8:01need to really talk about that. There's been a, there's been a,
- 8:04a, what I think is a pretty significant shift in looking
- 8:07more so less at the career as a whole.
- 8:11Because you see how that affects a guy like Andrew Jones where
- 8:13it's like, well, you have to take the whole, like the, the
- 8:16whole time he was on the ballot, you, you look at that and you
- 8:18go, well, I mean, he, he stuck around for too long.
- 8:22So there's been a shift, I think in in the minds of the voters,
- 8:25in the minds of baseball fans and and just the baseball world
- 8:28in general of looking at these these peaks, if you will, or
- 8:32like the like five to seven years of like what their
- 8:37dominance factor looked like. Shohei is going to be in a
- 8:42league of his own when it's all said and done.
- 8:44I mean, nobody's doing this. And to go back to the game
- 8:47tonight, sit in case you're just now catching up. 646, three home
- 8:55runs. I I was even unaware that he had
- 8:58he, he hit the third one. I thought it was like, oh, wow,
- 9:01he, he snuck in, he snuck in that 50th in the same game
- 9:04because he hit 49 and they're going, wow, is he going to do it
- 9:06tonight? He seems pretty locked in.
- 9:08He's like, yeah, I got 50 and then I also got 51 for you.
- 9:10Still in the chamber. 2 double SA single, ten runs batted in,
- 9:15four runs scored and two stolen bases to give him the keys, the
- 9:20only keys to the 5151 club at the end of the night.
- 9:25I think I saw it was 17 total bases.
- 9:28Is it is that is that correct 17 total bases and for those
- 9:32keeping track at home, if this still matters to you, it well,
- 9:36at least for the the point structure in our fantasy league,
- 9:38which is has now come to an end. But out of curiosity, I just
- 9:42went back and checked it what his number was today, a 33 point
- 9:46day for Shohei Otani. He's giving you like no hitter
- 9:51perfect game numbers just for a for a night out at the plate.
- 9:57That's that's what he gave you in terms of the fantasy value
- 10:00today. But just, I mean, just an
- 10:02unbelievable feat. And I'll be honest, like the
- 10:085050 is, is certainly impressive and I'm I'm not going to take
- 10:14anything away from that. But to me, the more impressive
- 10:17thing here is just that it's another addition to his already
- 10:23mind blowing resume. Like this is just another thing
- 10:27that he can, he can add to that he another notch in the belt
- 10:31that he can, he can take ownership of.
- 10:34And like I said, maybe even more impressive than that.
- 10:40You take it up another level. It's just the ways in which he
- 10:43does these things. Like we go back to the what was
- 10:47it? It was the the 4040 when he made
- 10:50that official. That was the walk off.
- 10:52Is that a walk off Grand Slam? It was, was it?
- 10:58I don't think it was a walk off, was it?
- 11:01I'm was it a walk off? Was it was it a walk off, home
- 11:05run or maybe walk off? I'm 99% sure it was walk off
- 11:08Grand Slam. It was a for sure a Grand Slam,
- 11:11but I don't think it was a walk off.
- 11:12I thought it was. I thought it was in the eighth.
- 11:16I'm like 99% sure as a walk off Grand Slam.
- 11:20I thought it was. I thought it was in like the 7th
- 11:22or the 8th. I honestly can't remember.
- 11:24Because I remember Jose Siri. No, it was a walk off Grand
- 11:27Slam. It was a walk off Grand Slam.
- 11:29Dang dude, that's that's just sick.
- 11:31I mean, that's what I'm saying though, who?
- 11:33Like this is unfathomable. You lose track.
- 11:36You lose track. It's hard to like, remember all
- 11:40these things like. That right there goes to show
- 11:42you just how frequently and and with what pizzazz he does this
- 11:46with. He's yeah, he notched the 4040
- 11:49club with a walk off Grand Slam. And we're struggling to remember
- 11:51it because the 5050, the way in which he did, he notched the
- 11:555050 staring us right in the face and we're trying to
- 11:57remember how he did what? Guy's a a freak, man.
- 12:01It's insane. It is it is insane.
- 12:03And when you, if you were who, if you're listening to this, I'd
- 12:07like to think you're watching some highlights or seeing TikTok
- 12:11videos of tonight's performance. The purity of a hitter.
- 12:19When you're watching, it's like laces a ball to right field for
- 12:24a single, a rising line drive off the wall for a AA inside
- 12:30out, double to left center, a home run to left, a home run to
- 12:34right, a tank job to deep right field.
- 12:39And I know it's against the position player.
- 12:40I get it. Hey, it counts in the book.
- 12:43It does in the book. That's a 9098 mile an hour
- 12:47heater. That's right.
- 12:51Yeah, dude, it's, it's really, really fun to watch.
- 12:57It's it's crazy when you hear the best players in the world
- 13:06saying, no, no, he's not, he's not like anything I've seen
- 13:09before. It's crazy when you have riders
- 13:13who've been covering baseball for 30-40 years.
- 13:15I mean, like, I haven't seen this before.
- 13:18This is this is a different thing.
- 13:23I went to the I told you I went to the All Star game in in
- 13:26Denver a few years ago and. I remember you texting me.
- 13:31He was in that Home Run Derby too, and when he was taking BPI
- 13:34was up in like deep. I was up in like third deck,
- 13:37right field by all, like the bars and stuff.
- 13:42And I was like, I can hear the difference from here.
- 13:46It's just a little different. The way his balls are like whoa,
- 13:50easy. The way.
- 13:51The way. The way the BP what pause?
- 14:00Big pause. Big pause.
- 14:03Dude, I, I mean, I know this on me.
- 14:05I know like everybody, their mother right now is Glaze and
- 14:08Otani and we're just another, another cog in the machine
- 14:11that's like. That's on me.
- 14:14What are we doing? The way the way the baseballs
- 14:17were hitting the seats and like hitting the crowd, it was like,
- 14:22no, that's just, that's just not the same as everybody else.
- 14:29Unbelievable, unbelievable. It gave it gave me and I think I
- 14:34think this game is better for a multitude of reasons, but it
- 14:37gave me like just like the the exclamation point of how when
- 14:47Jeter got his three thousandth hit as a home run and it was a 5
- 14:50for five day. Like that's how I remember that.
- 14:54Like I remember 3005 for five, it was a home run.
- 14:59That picture right there off of David Price.
- 15:02This gives me that same thing was like, oh, so he did 50 for
- 15:0650, never done it before. And he did it on a night where
- 15:08he went 6 for 60 and he had three jacks.
- 15:11Oh, seventeen stolen stolen total bases with two stolen
- 15:16bases on top. Like stolen bases, Yeah.
- 15:18That it's just, it's too much. This is too much.
- 15:22There's not enough room in the newspaper, in the box score for
- 15:25all this stuff. This man's different fun to
- 15:30watch and the. Same, the same guy that you're
- 15:34describing right now is a guy that we have the fortune of
- 15:37watching every single night and has the potential.
- 15:42It obviously doesn't do it do something like this every single
- 15:45night, but he's the type of player that has the potential.
- 15:48If he if he was clicking on all cylinders, could could do this
- 15:52night in and night out. Yeah, that's the kind of player
- 15:55he is. It's just it impossible to wrap
- 15:57my head around. I'm a little I'm struggling with
- 16:00the idea that baseball fans in Miami knew that this was on the
- 16:07brink and didn't fill that stadium.
- 16:09Up well that tells you what you need to know about Miami.
- 16:11I know I'm sure it's it's I swear it's it's always something
- 16:15with every fan base. It what is it with Miami?
- 16:18Because in in Saint Pete, it's the it's the bridge.
- 16:21What is it with Miami? Is there like is there like a
- 16:25hot dog vendor on the corner that's a little extra pushy that
- 16:29causes people to be late into the ballpark?
- 16:31It's something with every every fan base of what the every fan
- 16:35base. I should say not not all of
- 16:37them, but every fan base that struggles with attendance.
- 16:40There's always a fall back. So what is it with Miami?
- 16:43Because you make a great point this everybody knew this was on
- 16:46the verge of happening. And the fact that, I mean, I'm
- 16:51looking at the episode graphic right now that I've already
- 16:53created, there's a lot of blue in just that that image that I'm
- 16:57looking at. So like.
- 17:00And Dodgers fans are everywhere. I would venture to say 98% of
- 17:05the people in the ballpark were Dodgers fans and I'd like.
- 17:08To think that if if I was, if I was a Marlin fan and your season
- 17:11is is done, like I'd still want to go watch the Dodgers, I'd
- 17:17still want to go watch Mookie, Freddie and Otani.
- 17:22I mean, the the, the pay, the payroll that the Dodgers are
- 17:25sporting right now is probably the entire value of the Marlins
- 17:29franchise since they became a franchise.
- 17:33So like, yeah, that's a lot of star power.
- 17:35Maybe take it in. They chose not to.
- 17:38That's fine. Get out of there.
- 17:39No, that's your response. For Get out of Miami.
- 17:41No, you said that about the white.
- 17:44Sox on the Portland. No, because then if they have
- 17:47problems with the tenants, you're going to say we'll move
- 17:49them to Portland and it's just going to be a constant merry go
- 17:53round of. Go to West Virginia.
- 17:55Let's not do that. Anything else on on Otani, we
- 18:01got to talk. Just you mentioned Dodgers,
- 18:04Dodgers fans, they've got some additional good news.
- 18:08It's a big night. Big night for the Dodgers
- 18:11clinching their ticket to the postseason.
- 18:14Something we obviously knew was going to happen this this late
- 18:18in the game. But it it always hits a little
- 18:21different. Even if you're expecting it, it
- 18:22hits a little different when it becomes official.
- 18:24You start seeing those, those little tiny letters next to your
- 18:27team's name and the MLB standings.
- 18:31It's a it's a beautiful thing when a when a team can finally
- 18:36stop. Take a breath, reflect on, even
- 18:40if for a little bit, reflect on the season that they have.
- 18:43They have put together the body of work that they have put
- 18:46forth, even with the team that's as loaded as the Dodgers, You
- 18:52know, good, good for the Dodgers.
- 18:54Be able to make it official tonight.
- 18:56Just a big night for Dodgers fans.
- 18:58Big, big night. Yeah.
- 19:03I, I remember for like a week, people were talking about like
- 19:08who the Padres are going to get them, the Diamondbacks could
- 19:14catch them, and that was it. And it was, it was just like for
- 19:18a week, that was a conversation. It wasn't a conversation for
- 19:21months. There was a little bit of a
- 19:24skid, other teams got hot and then that was it.
- 19:30The Dodgers just kind of put an end to that conversation.
- 19:32And I get it. I understand Dodgers fans.
- 19:35Trust me. I'm just like you.
- 19:38This doesn't really matter that much, right?
- 19:41The trophy is the only thing we care about.
- 19:43That's what we got to stay focused on.
- 19:45I understand that. Do you guys even, you mean the
- 19:49Yankees fans? Do you even remember what the
- 19:50trophy looks like? I don't, Personally, no I don't.
- 19:53I haven't seen it in a. While no, I was just, I was just
- 19:55kidding. No it wasn't.
- 19:56It wasn't a dig. I was just genuinely curious.
- 19:59Something with flags, I don't know.
- 20:02So yeah, it's. It's a good thing.
- 20:06It's a good, it's a good thing that they have this.
- 20:09It's a good thing that they can figure out a way to try and get
- 20:14healthy, do what they need to do to somehow get pitching geared
- 20:19up and get In Sync. So yeah, good for good for the
- 20:28Dodger Blue faithful. Let's let's shift gears here to
- 20:32one of their NL counterparts, who were actually the first team
- 20:36to clinch a division, in fact, the only team as of right now,
- 20:43correct? Yeah.
- 20:48Really. Pretty sure.
- 20:51Please hold. Yeah, only team as of this
- 20:56moment to have clinched vision first, first and only let.
- 21:00Me just because of how bad. My, I, I wanted to take a minute
- 21:05to just talk about can we, can we speculate a little bit, sure,
- 21:11a little bit as to what's going on in the mind of Craig counsel
- 21:15right now? How do you mean?
- 21:21Just being a little being a little pissed, being a little
- 21:24bitter. Look at how this is panned out.
- 21:26Yeah. I mean, yeah, I understand that.
- 21:31I get that. I think, I think he went to
- 21:34Chicago knowing it was going to be a little bit of a work in
- 21:38progress, right? You'd like to think so.
- 21:41I no, I hear you and I'm not I'm not.
- 21:45First of all, I'm not like anti Craig counsel here.
- 21:47I just thought this was an interesting talking point given
- 21:51the way things have developed have developed.
- 21:53I'm not against Craig counsel. I've I've said for years now
- 21:56that I think he's one of the the brightest baseball minds in the
- 21:59sport. I'm just saying it regardless if
- 22:03if he's abiding by the whole trust, the processing with the
- 22:07Cubs and he it's a work in progress.
- 22:09Regardless of all of that, it still has to sting when you have
- 22:14the team that you jump ship from in your division, go on to win
- 22:21that division and do it in such a dominating fashion.
- 22:26They're 10 1/2 up right now. I mean, I don't think it was
- 22:31that when they clinched a few nights ago or a couple nights
- 22:33ago, but like, that's got to sting a little bit.
- 22:39I mean, they didn't miss a step with Pat Murphy, it seems.
- 22:44Yeah, yeah. And honestly, you know, I was
- 22:49reading some commentary on that whole thing.
- 22:50Good on Pat Murphy. I mean, I know, like if there's
- 22:53an opportunity for you to be a big league manager, that's going
- 22:56to become your priority. But like, if you're Pat Murphy
- 23:00and maybe you didn't entirely feel ready to take that on it, I
- 23:03don't I I don't know what was going on there.
- 23:04You could have very easily went to Chicago with counsel who you
- 23:09were. I think it was his bench coach,
- 23:10right? Could have easily went to
- 23:12Chicago with him and had it made in the shade and been you could
- 23:17have continued to stay under one of the the the best minds in
- 23:21baseball and just continue to do what you had been doing.
- 23:24He did have an interim manager stint there briefly.
- 23:30I don't even remember who with. But yeah, it's like good on Pat
- 23:35Murphy for for staying put and staying with with your guys and
- 23:39seeing it through. And we'll see how October shakes
- 23:43out for him. But this is a heck of a start
- 23:45for them in that journey. It's kind of wild thinking back
- 23:51to a year ago when like, everyone's freaking out,
- 23:54including us, when they traded Josh Hader and you're just like,
- 23:58what? What's going on?
- 24:00What are they doing? Well, that was.
- 24:02What's their What's their direction?
- 24:04Was that only? A year ago, wasn't that.
- 24:06Two years ago? I thought it was last.
- 24:07No, that was a year ago, wasn't it?
- 24:10I thought he got traded to the Padres last year.
- 24:15I thought it. Was right.
- 24:16No, you're right. Yeah.
- 24:18And like, you know, Devin Williams is in the clubhouse.
- 24:22He's like, yeah, like, I don't know.
- 24:23I don't know, man. Like I'm kind of lost.
- 24:25Like, there. It was interesting.
- 24:29It's been an interesting ride. Christian Yelich, like, started
- 24:35to come back. Now he's not around like you.
- 24:38You've you've got a quiet, sneaky assassin and Willy
- 24:42Adamus. We had a pitching staff who is
- 24:46doing extremely well. You've young promising names
- 24:50like Jackson Cheerio and and William Contreras are going to
- 24:56like, I think going to go on to do some things in the middle of
- 24:59that lineup for a while. It's it's strange and I think
- 25:04it's just like randomly got here, especially for like us
- 25:09fans who may not be locked in the Milwaukee Brewer baseball
- 25:13throughout the year. I don't know if it's, I don't
- 25:15know if random is the right. Word.
- 25:17I'm not, I'm not saying like they they I'm not saying this is
- 25:20like a a blind squirrel finds a nut every once.
- 25:23In a while you're saying for like non Brewers people it just.
- 25:26This is like this is we just ended up here like all of a
- 25:28sudden. Yeah, that's fair.
- 25:30They're clenching the division and we're currently at a double
- 25:33digit lead. And I get it, like the central
- 25:36is bad. I get that.
- 25:39I can understand that argument, but like, Dang it, dude, like we
- 25:45got to we got to talk about the fact that they're they're like
- 25:50top three in pitching across multiple categories.
- 25:54I think they have. I think they're fourth in team
- 26:00ERA as of yesterday at A365 and then offensively they've made
- 26:06improvements from last year. Big time.
- 26:09To where they were. It's always been the issue.
- 26:11They were like bottom third, even bottom of the barrel in
- 26:14certain categories. This.
- 26:15I think they've snuck in the top top 10.
- 26:18For this year, yeah, they entered yesterday ranked 4th and
- 26:21run scored and 11th in team OPS, which I know probably is going
- 26:25to adjust by the end of the season, but I mean, they've made
- 26:28they've made strides. It's impressive.
- 26:31It really is like I, I know I've spent the last few years, if if
- 26:35you've been listening for a while, you know, I'm never
- 26:38really super impressed by the Brewers.
- 26:41I think this is like a new age. This is a new, a new like fun
- 26:47swagger with some of these names that you're like, OK, these are
- 26:50guys that are going to be here for a little bit and props,
- 26:56props on them, dude. Props on them for hanging on to
- 27:00a Willy Adamus. Props on them for, you know,
- 27:03handling this division. This you still got to as bad as
- 27:06the division can be, still got to go and handle your business.
- 27:09And they did. So despite what happens this
- 27:14this postseason, if it's if it's a run, if it's an early exit, I
- 27:20think this is a good pat on the back situation for the Brewers.
- 27:23I think this is something you can take into the to the
- 27:26offseason. Be like, hey, free agents, like
- 27:28we're starting to play some ball over here.
- 27:30Like we got a little something going.
- 27:32And Brewers fans, you know, there ain't much else going on
- 27:37in in Milwaukee, you know what I'm saying?
- 27:39Like, you know, Jordan Love just went down for the Packers.
- 27:45They don't know what's going on there.
- 27:47It's really cold. You got a lot of cheese going
- 27:52on. You just, you got a lot of
- 27:53casseroles being passed around tapioca pudding.
- 27:58What do we do? Why don't we just pull up a
- 28:01chair and watch some? Brewers postseason baseball.
- 28:05Hey, I'm really glad you mentioned that, that bit there.
- 28:09I think you said something the effect of like it's time to turn
- 28:11the page or something with these Brewers.
- 28:14I was quite, I'm glad you brought that up because I was
- 28:16quite literally thinking about that this evening where I was
- 28:19like, you know, there's certain teams in baseball and I'm sure
- 28:23if you're listening or watching you there, you probably have
- 28:27like bits or narratives in your own mind that could maybe use
- 28:31some refreshing. But I was literally thinking
- 28:32this this evening where I'm like, you know, I think it's
- 28:35time that we revisit some of our talking points that have that I
- 28:43would almost argue have gotten stale, not necessarily because
- 28:47of us, but just because of the way things have gone with those
- 28:50teams or players. And like for the Twins, for the
- 28:54longest time, for example, it was like year after year, I just
- 28:58got tired of saying having the same conversation with you of
- 29:00like, OK, they're going to make the playoffs, but then they're
- 29:03just going to fall flat on their face.
- 29:04And then it's like, OK, well, they finally got the they, what
- 29:07was it last year? They finally won a game.
- 29:09And it's like, whoa, OK, maybe we maybe maybe turn in and turn
- 29:13into another page here with the Twins.
- 29:15The Brewers are one of these teams where I'm like, OK, I
- 29:18think with the way that they develop and this is
- 29:21accountability. I'm not going to sit here and
- 29:23play revisionist history. We, you said it yourself, you
- 29:26and I both have been like pretty down on the Brewers.
- 29:30But I think it's time that it's like you have to look in the
- 29:34mirror and go, OK, based on the way they develop, based on the
- 29:36way they acquire pieces and even sell off pieces that further
- 29:42enhance their product moving forward, albeit over a longer
- 29:46stretch of time. It's time we look at a team like
- 29:50the Brewers and go, OK, it's time.
- 29:52Maybe it maybe not fully or maybe not this second, but maybe
- 29:57sometime soon we can lay to rest the like, hey, the Brewers are
- 30:02just like a a flash in the pan, quick exit from the postseason
- 30:07because they who knows, they might do something a little
- 30:09different this year or next year or or beyond.
- 30:12So get this. Build on it.
- 30:15Yeah, I hate, hate when teams do this and they're like, we were
- 30:21just few games away, let's just run it back with the same
- 30:24roster. Let's not do anything to
- 30:26advance. I hate that.
- 30:28Well, let's just do this. Build on it.
- 30:30You mentioned hater, you lose hater you.
- 30:32We talked Craig counsel, you, Craig counsel walks out the
- 30:36door, you lose Corbin Burns. It's like this, this division
- 30:41clinched being the first team or the only team as of right now to
- 30:45have the division clinched. It's it's kind of confusing
- 30:49honestly. Like when you take into account
- 30:52those those pieces that they have lost over the last year
- 30:55too, the fact that they're here. And I think you said it best it
- 30:59we just have, we're here. It just happened and we're here.
- 31:02That's the best way to summarize it.
- 31:04Got to this destination and look like this isn't like the last
- 31:07team clinching. This isn't the last division
- 31:10that's been decided. This isn't going into the final
- 31:13like the last two or three games of the season.
- 31:16This is the first team to clinch by double digits.
- 31:21I mean, where? Where are they at right now?
- 31:2384 wins. 88 and 6588. Wins 88 wins, maybe a 90 win
- 31:31team in Milwaukee like, you know, demand a little respect.
- 31:36That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying.
- 31:38OK, with this time to turn a page in Milwaukee, I think,
- 31:42well, not in Milwaukee, but for the people that we're we're
- 31:48ragging on the Brewers for the last handful of years, I think
- 31:50it's time. I think it's time we look at
- 31:53them through a new lens. Moving, moving.
- 31:57Along rowdy, by the way, that's going to get.
- 31:58That's going to get rowdy environment.
- 32:00I want to touch on that at the end, if we have time, moving
- 32:04right along here, Let's talk Yankees.
- 32:07The Yankees have solidified their spot in the 2024
- 32:13postseason. And they did it.
- 32:15I got to say, the, the way the fashion in which they did it,
- 32:20Like, come on, come on, Mariners.
- 32:24If it's a guy, if there's a guy like me that's watching, hate
- 32:29watching, admittedly, at least at least go down in a little bit
- 32:36more of a respectable fashion instead of whatever Julio
- 32:39Rodriguez was doing at third base.
- 32:43I've yet to get the camera angle on that.
- 32:45I don't know what happened because the bat got launched and
- 32:47then the bat got. Launched and then.
- 32:49Zoomed in on the bat and stays there.
- 32:52OK, so so here's here. Oh, so you haven't seen the
- 32:55other? You haven't.
- 32:57Seen the other angle I've gotten, every video is the same.
- 33:00So what happened is it was a Rose Arena launched the bat, the
- 33:05bat goes fine. Naturally, swinging miss strike
- 33:08three back goes flying up the third baseline.
- 33:12And naturally, Julio does what all of us would do, kind of like
- 33:16shies out of the way, make sure he protects himself.
- 33:19Totally understandable. But then he just forgets that
- 33:22there's a baseball game going on and it's like, I'm just going to
- 33:24hang out here and and make my way back to 3rd when I'm
- 33:27comfortable and and and ready to do so.
- 33:30And then meanwhile Austin Wells is just lacing one down a third
- 33:34base. Oh, you're out.
- 33:36Threat eliminated. Sick.
- 33:38Pretty sure it was what 21 at that point.
- 33:45This was the 9th. No, I'm I'm like 99% sure it was
- 33:48the 9th because this wasn't this their last day BI think anyway.
- 33:53Not important. It was the 8th or 9th
- 33:55essentially eliminated their chance of of fending off the
- 33:57Yankees for delaying the inevitable.
- 34:00I should say for for another day.
- 34:02It, it was just a very, I don't know, not a very respectable way
- 34:08to hand the Yankees their their clinch.
- 34:10I'll just say that, but less about the Mariners, more about
- 34:13the Yankees here. What do you think right off the
- 34:19top here for the Yankees? What do you think about Jazz's
- 34:21comments saying that we're going to go win a World World Series?
- 34:27Who's this guy? I think he is Joe Namath.
- 34:28They're. Giving me help, man, I hate to
- 34:30say it. They're giving me hope.
- 34:32They're giving me hope. Look, I'm not, I'm not an idiot.
- 34:35I'm not sit here. I'm not going to sit here and
- 34:38say this team doesn't have problems.
- 34:40They have problems. They have a lot of they have a
- 34:43lot of fundamental problems, lot of base running problems, some
- 34:49questionable defense at times. The offense can get anemic at
- 34:54times, but in a year where we're not seeing anyone specific team
- 35:01get dominant, it is a lot of who can get hot, I think.
- 35:07And that's always kind of the cliche story about the
- 35:09postseason, right? Who's hot, who's healthy?
- 35:12Let's ride, right? But this is a team that like
- 35:17when when they are clicking, there's a reason why they're
- 35:22going to be around that 9495 wins when it's all said and
- 35:27done. Like this is a pretty good ball
- 35:29club and this is a good roster. And you're talking about an
- 35:33historic offense between Soto and Judge, numbers that we
- 35:38haven't seen since, you know, Mickey and Maris.
- 35:40I mean statistically one of the best duos.
- 35:43Right. Any of us have ever seen.
- 35:45So, you know, don't get me. Don't get me wrong, I have
- 35:48concerns. I have question marks, but I I
- 35:53have hope. I'm I'm feeling it.
- 35:56I'm getting a little excited. Hey, Speaking of being excited,
- 36:01I love the fact that all y'all are hanging out in the chat with
- 36:04us. Drop quick, quick little
- 36:08homework or something for you. Drop in in or out in the chat.
- 36:12If you're watching on on live stream, if your team is still in
- 36:17the hunt or if you're already looking ahead to 2025, want to
- 36:20get a a pulse of of what we're dealing with there.
- 36:24But anyway, the Yankees are to your to what you were saying
- 36:30they they do have problems. The the reality is though, is a
- 36:35lot of the teams that are either currently in or fighting to get
- 36:40in, they all have problems and a team that we're going to touch
- 36:42on here in just a moment. The the Orioles, I mean, they
- 36:44got a whole lot of problems, but what is it?
- 36:51What element like if you had to pin it to 11 specific thing for
- 36:56the Yankees, it's giving you hope.
- 36:58I'm going to I'm going to eliminate the cop out answer of
- 37:00like Judge and Soto, because as great as they've been, they're
- 37:03not going to they're not going to take you to where you would
- 37:06like to see this team go single handedly.
- 37:10But if there was 11 facet of what the Yankees are doing right
- 37:12now, for those of us who aren't Yankees fans, who who aren't
- 37:17locked into the games every night, what what is one reason
- 37:23if you had to give that would have you putting them in the
- 37:26World Series or even winning it? Like what is it that they're
- 37:28doing? It sounds kind of cliche, but I
- 37:36feel like they're in every game. For the most part, they're in
- 37:40every game. They have a chance in pretty
- 37:44much every game. You're watching an Aaron Boone
- 37:47who is welcoming some some change.
- 37:53I think he's OK with making adjustments.
- 37:57I think we're seeing his hand almost be forced in certain
- 38:03ways. Like Austin Wells.
- 38:06I'm I'm just going to sit here and say I think deserves to be
- 38:10in the conversation as a top five catcher in baseball with
- 38:13what he's doing framing wise. If you look at framing
- 38:16statistics, if you look, if you look at throw downs and what
- 38:21he's been able to bring offensively moving in as a lefty
- 38:25in the four hole behind Judge, it's it's opened up a lot.
- 38:30It's really lengthen that line up out.
- 38:33It allows guys like Jazz and and Rizzo to be in that like bottom
- 38:38third area and just kind of hang out and be forgotten about.
- 38:43Like the lineup has gotten long and Jazz and you know, honestly,
- 38:51I think Jason Dominguez and like there's just there's
- 38:54athleticism. There's a little bit more speed.
- 38:58Nestor Cortez has actually been really good for like the last
- 39:01five, six starts. Luis Heel really promising
- 39:06watching Luke Weaver move into the the back end into the closer
- 39:10role for now, since Clay Holmes is kind of scuffled.
- 39:13Like there's been adjustments that have been made that I think
- 39:17it's cool to see instead of just let's just roll out the same
- 39:21thing and have the same comment every time.
- 39:25That that Clay Holmes nuke that he gave up in Seattle to tie the
- 39:30game, that was the most predictable situation ever.
- 39:33Yeah, man, yeah. No, but you bring up a good
- 39:36point. But yeah, all all very valid.
- 39:39And that would I could understand if you're a Yankees
- 39:42fan, why that would give you hope, especially at a stretch of
- 39:46the year, meaning the postseason, where that is a very
- 39:51important factor. That's a very important element
- 39:53that if you, if you're unable to bring to the table, you're not
- 39:56going to stand a very good chance because those games, if
- 39:58you've watched playoff baseball for any stretch of time, you
- 40:01know that those games, I feel it's probably not accurate, but
- 40:05I feel like more often than not or like neck and neck for the
- 40:10most part because every at bat, every half inning, every inning.
- 40:15Is is like a a chess game within a chess game to where you can't
- 40:20let the opposition get too far out in front, you can't let
- 40:23yourself get too far behind. So if you're a team such as the
- 40:26Yankees, as you're saying, that's able to find a way to
- 40:29stay in it for 7-8, even 9 innings, chances of you finding
- 40:37success are are much greater at that point.
- 40:40And they're at a spot where I genuinely think I can look
- 40:43around the starting lineup and say you're going to give us
- 40:45something positive today. You may you may be struggling in
- 40:49certain areas. Volpe has been really tough at
- 40:53the plate, but he's excellent defensively.
- 40:56Rizzo, same story. Glaber opposite, struggling
- 41:00defensively, but has been great in the leadoff spot in front of
- 41:04Soto. Like you have excellent defense
- 41:07out of Verdugo and left, even though it's been terrible to
- 41:10plate. Like there's just there's
- 41:13aspects of really good something being brought to the table by
- 41:17each guy. Each guy is being productive.
- 41:19So yeah. You mentioned Soto, just a quick
- 41:21note here. Very.
- 41:26Can I just be honest? I've, I've really tried hard to
- 41:30fight the whole like I still love Juan Soto because he's he's
- 41:35a Yankee now and it's just really hard for me to accept
- 41:37that. But I'm at a point now where I
- 41:40admittedly, I just don't care. Like I, I love watching this guy
- 41:43play and I the fact that he did what he did, it's similar in to,
- 41:49to show what we're talking about with Shohei earlier in terms of
- 41:52doing what he does in the way that he does it.
- 41:56His 40th home run, which I'm sure you you now know at this
- 41:59point was also the 200th of his career and oh, by the way,
- 42:06officially gave him a home run in 30 out of 30 ballparks.
- 42:14I mean, that's say what you will about Soto, say what you will
- 42:18about the Yankees, that is insane like that for.
- 42:23He's 25. He's. 25 years old and for
- 42:26somebody like me who loves like round clean numbers and and
- 42:30simplicity, the fact that he did the fact that he did 42130 out
- 42:38of 30 on the same swing, that's nice.
- 42:44That's a thing of beauty. That is the thing of beauty.
- 42:47But yeah, you you brought up the more important point and it's
- 42:49the fact that he's 25 years old and he has 200 career home runs.
- 42:54So just just trying to read the room here.
- 42:58Safe to say we can put to bed the whole walk merchant
- 43:01narrative. Yeah, he's 25.
- 43:05Yeah. 25 and has 200 career home runs, right.
- 43:12And what cracks me up about people is I, I, I put out the
- 43:18post about that feat or, or that home run and, and what that,
- 43:22what that did for him. And my caption, it was a tweet
- 43:26that I put out, took a screenshot of it and then posted
- 43:29it to our, our podcast page. And my, the caption I put for
- 43:33the podcast pages, people still call them overrated.
- 43:36And then not even to my surprise, I knew I, I kind of
- 43:41figured this was coming. You have people rewriting
- 43:44history who, who on earth is calling him overrated?
- 43:47Like that's a, why are we making this narrative up?
- 43:50And I go have do people even pay attention anymore or is is
- 43:57everyday people just wake up and it's like the men in black,
- 43:59everything just gets wiped away and then they're going, OK,
- 44:02well, what do we what, what, what narrative are we going to
- 44:04push today because. Men in Black for Halloween one
- 44:06year. Five year.
- 44:08Excellent. I I know for a fact, and if
- 44:11you've been paying attention at all to Juan Soda's career and,
- 44:14and the path that he's on, he is just been followed by this
- 44:20insane narrative that he's overrated.
- 44:22And then all he does is collect walks and all he does is is.
- 44:25I read those comments. I don't know why people are
- 44:28acting like they're not out there.
- 44:29There's those comments are out there for sure.
- 44:32Just insane. Yeah, incredible player.
- 44:35I it's so cool to be able to watch him all the time.
- 44:41It's so cool. We have so much talent in the
- 44:43game right now. Speaking of which, Cleveland
- 44:47Guardians, a team that started off with a great deal of promise
- 44:55and hit a little bit of a slide but has since returned to the
- 44:59conversation, the national storyline.
- 45:02They were the second American League team qualifier for the
- 45:06postseason, following suit of the Yankees.
- 45:09They clinched their spot Wednesday.
- 45:15And I'll tell you what I know, I know we're talking a lot.
- 45:18We got a lot of manager talk going on tonight, but Steven
- 45:21vote, I don't know if you saw that video from the other night,
- 45:24give it to him you. I talk on this podcast a lot
- 45:31about players, managers and the importance I personally believe
- 45:36that that role has in the game. And I tell you what, Stephen
- 45:43Vogt is a player's manager if I've ever seen one.
- 45:46This guy loves his players. And that video I was just asking
- 45:49about, he's there. I don't even remember what what
- 45:52the question was in relation to, but he's getting choked up
- 45:55talking about like how much how much he loves his players and
- 45:58how much they love each other. And I know, I know that that's
- 46:02not exactly groundbreaking. Like we've we've, we've seen
- 46:04that before. We've heard that before.
- 46:07But the fact that he's doing this from like from the jump, he
- 46:16followed, he follows in the footsteps of Terry Francona, one
- 46:19of the games best, in my opinion, one of the game's
- 46:22greatest managers it's ever seen.
- 46:26And he's again, to use a phrase I used early in the episode,
- 46:31didn't miss a step, didn't miss a step.
- 46:35The Guardians, even with their their intermittent slides that
- 46:40they've gone on, I don't think there's been much of a question
- 46:46as. To.
- 46:47What this team is bringing to the table and I've seen I will
- 46:52say I've I've I've been tracking what the guardians fans have
- 46:56been saying and they're they're a little bit in the mode of just
- 47:02eternal despair because that seems to be the only mode that
- 47:04they can really find or the only gear that they can really find.
- 47:07But I, I don't know, man, it's this could the Guardians to me
- 47:16are a team that we could very easily see get bounced their
- 47:23first series. But in the same way, could he I,
- 47:27I feel like we could easily see them in a World Series.
- 47:31And I, I shouldn't say that it's I shouldn't say I shouldn't say
- 47:34that it's likely. I'll just say that I, I wouldn't
- 47:37be surprised with the makeup of this team with, like I said,
- 47:40with Steven, Steven Vogt at the helm, I don't think it's going
- 47:44to happen necessarily, but I'll just say I at this, at this
- 47:47stage of the game, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 47:49Yeah, it's really, it's really strange.
- 47:51Like you look at all the things they do well and you're like,
- 47:57yeah, I can I can get behind this.
- 48:01And for those teams that are that close and when they can
- 48:08look at like a true leader, that's my guy fighting for me
- 48:13type manager. It does stuff in the postseason.
- 48:18Like it it gives teams like this.
- 48:21We're not out of the fight underdog, whatever.
- 48:24We are like, you know what I mean?
- 48:26Like we're we're just we have a chance.
- 48:28We always have a chance. It just it gives me that vibe.
- 48:34They have an historic run happening in Class A at the back
- 48:41end. Like I think he's for sure the
- 48:44best closer in baseball. So if you can get to, and we
- 48:48talked about this before, like you're talking about now, a
- 48:52postseason game turning into 7 innings, potentially maybe 6,
- 48:57when you start working backwards, it makes things
- 49:00interesting. They're pesky.
- 49:03They they steal bases, they hit behind runners, they do hit and
- 49:09runs. They play really solid defense.
- 49:12They they don't, they're a team that doesn't really beat
- 49:15themselves. They're very fundamentally
- 49:18sound. Are there more talented rosters?
- 49:21Sure, absolutely. But you have a team that's going
- 49:26to say, hey, you got to beat me, I'm not going to lose.
- 49:31You got to beat me. That makes.
- 49:35Things interesting they they have 42.
- 49:39I had to look it up to be sure. 42 come from behind wins this
- 49:43season. That's what he does, dude.
- 49:46There's a comfort in that spot, right?
- 49:49There's a comfort in that spot. I think it's been over a year
- 49:52since they've lost a game after leading through 8.
- 49:56That's what I'm talking about Class A doing.
- 50:00They, they have a, when you have a team that's comfortable
- 50:04managing in a way and and playing a game behind and
- 50:09understanding that they're still in the hunt no matter what, like
- 50:12that's a scary thing. They're dominant at home.
- 50:16That's a very good team. That's what I talked about last
- 50:20week with the power rankings and being nervous about a team.
- 50:23I I wouldn't want to mess with the Guardians dude.
- 50:26That's hey, tip of the cap to you.
- 50:28That's, that's a good call. Might.
- 50:32If I were to rearrange my list, I may.
- 50:34I might. Sneak them in there, right?
- 50:36The more we're talking about it, I'm I'm I may have to have them
- 50:38on my list, but no, like you were saying about the Yankees
- 50:40and and you as a fan watching them night in night out, feeling
- 50:44like they're always in it it. This team truly is.
- 50:48It's on paper, it, it's been proven.
- 50:50The proof's in the pudding. They're they're in it, They're
- 50:52going to, they're going to give, the Guardians are going to give
- 50:57you a fight, win or lose. And it seems based on the amount
- 51:01of come from behind wins they have that they're going to
- 51:03figure out a way to win more times than not.
- 51:07But it goes back to what I said about what you were saying with
- 51:10the Yankees. That's it.
- 51:11That's in a vital asset, a vital way of playing the game that if
- 51:20you can bring that to the postseason table, that's worth
- 51:24its weight. In Goldman, like you, you, you
- 51:26talk about talent. We've seen we've seen talented
- 51:29teams fall flat on their face. But if you've got a beyond the
- 51:32talent, if you've got a makeup like a, a never say die makeup,
- 51:38that's that is crucial and that it to kind of put a bow on it.
- 51:43That's why I said I could easily see this team just because it's
- 51:46the guardians and it's it's no knock against them.
- 51:50But like the, the track record is there.
- 51:53I could easily see them getting bounced their first series.
- 51:57But because of what we've just talked about, I could easily see
- 51:59them somehow ending up in the World Series and it it wouldn't
- 52:02even surprise me at this point. So yeah, good on the guardians,
- 52:06man, that that'll be a fun team to watch.
- 52:08I, I, I think truly once, once the post season gets going,
- 52:14A-Team, that's a. Little.
- 52:17A little. Shaky, a little shaky.
- 52:20Kind of on the flip side here, I'm switching scripts, the
- 52:24Baltimore Orioles. And look, I know, I know they
- 52:28had a big time walk off win today.
- 52:31Anthony Santander with I believe a two or three run home run that
- 52:36got out by mere inches, which I think just speaks to the the way
- 52:43things have been going for the Orioles.
- 52:44It's like not even their walk off win can be convincing.
- 52:48They've been on the slide. They've been on the slide as of
- 52:50late. Prior to the day, they were 4-9
- 52:53in their last 13, which is just not what you want to hear this
- 52:58close to the end of the regular season.
- 53:02Their odds during that stretch, their odds to win the American
- 53:07League East went from 48% to 5%. And their offense has been
- 53:13horrendous, in fact, league worst and all of baseball during
- 53:18that stretch. And their bullpen just the same.
- 53:24And this is all capped with the DFA of Craig Kimbrell, which if
- 53:31you ask any Orioles fans and you talk all the time about how good
- 53:35friend of the show Ryan Ripkins, his his, his people, his
- 53:40following majority Orioles fans have have made their way into
- 53:44your feed. So you're seeing a lot of
- 53:45Orioles content right now. You ask any Orioles fan, they
- 53:50they were ready for this. They had been clamoring for this
- 53:53for some time, and it finally happened.
- 53:58Yeah, man, it's tough. I I think the timing is a little
- 54:01weird for it. I get it.
- 54:03I get that this was like the last straw.
- 54:08It's just it's it's very I think when you're coming down the
- 54:13homestretch this way and we're talking 1012 games left kind of
- 54:17thing, when you're coming down the homestretch, it's almost
- 54:22like a all right, boys, like let's lace him up, let's get
- 54:29after it. We're tired.
- 54:31This is a long season, let's go get her done right.
- 54:35And for this, it's like even with how tough he's been
- 54:42performance wise, like you're still losing a brother in the
- 54:46clubhouse when you're in, it's almost like a a kick when you're
- 54:49down kind of thing. I think if you were going to do
- 54:52this, I would have liked to seen this done maybe 3-4 weeks ago
- 54:57just to give the team enough time to kind of gather around
- 55:02this, all right, this is who we've got.
- 55:03This is what we got to do, right?
- 55:06And now it's like, OK, we're, we're a week and a half out and
- 55:10like, OK, like this is who we have now.
- 55:13And you're kind of scuffling a little bit.
- 55:15You're saying goodbye to a guy like it's, it's just a little
- 55:18weird. They seem uptight to me.
- 55:21When I watch them play, they seem uptight.
- 55:24I think you have certain, certain guys that when you watch
- 55:31them play, they're stoic. Gunner Henderson is stoic.
- 55:38Adley Rushman, stoic. Jackson Holiday stoic.
- 55:43Cedric Mullins stoic. I think that's good to have in a
- 55:49clubhouse, obviously, and I love that you and I love that you hit
- 55:52a home run, you put your bat down, you trot.
- 55:54It's business as usual. There's something swaggy about
- 55:57that in its own way, but there's almost like there's not a whole
- 56:01lot of and I get it. Losing is not fun, but you got
- 56:04to have a couple guys in the clubhouse that can like loosen
- 56:08it up a little bit and relax, right?
- 56:10Like the the guy that always comes to mind for me.
- 56:14And again, as a Yankee fan, like, sorry to hate me if you
- 56:16want, but I think of like Nick Swisher, you know what I'm
- 56:19saying? Like, I get it, there's only so
- 56:21many Nick Swishers in this world, but you got to have
- 56:23certain guys like that or they're like, let's like loosen
- 56:26up a little bit. Let's go have some fun.
- 56:28Let's just remember that we're playing a game and like, let's
- 56:31just go get it done and and enjoy it.
- 56:34And I feel like there's not enough of that in the clubhouse
- 56:37with them. I don't know why I can't explain
- 56:40it. I don't watch them every day.
- 56:42Some of you are probably listening saying you're an
- 56:43idiot, but like that's just from an outsider perspective.
- 56:46That's what I'm witnessing. No, I mean that.
- 56:51I think you're right. I mean, I think you watch any,
- 56:53you watch an Orioles game at any point, and you could probably
- 56:56gather that same summary, if you will, of of those players and
- 57:03the way they go about the game. And that certainly has its
- 57:06benefit got to have. Wells like that, you got to have
- 57:09some guys like that. Got to have guys like that.
- 57:11But to your point, like when when the going starts getting
- 57:16tough and, and you, you start pressing as an individual and
- 57:23then you look around and remind and, and you're, you're reminded
- 57:26of, Oh yeah, everybody else in this lineup and in this dugout
- 57:30is sort of like me in this way. And they're also pressing and
- 57:34you have nobody to look to to loosen things up a little bit.
- 57:37And some sometimes you have the benefit of looking to your
- 57:41manager. I don't know what kind of role
- 57:42Brandon Hyde plays and like, I don't know what he brings to the
- 57:44table and trying to loosen things up, but I feel like he's
- 57:47sort of in that same. Boat, I think he's I feel like
- 57:50his job's on the line a little bit this offseason and he owes
- 57:53it. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:54So I mean it, if they don't really have anybody to look to,
- 57:57I don't, I don't know how how you loosen things up.
- 58:00I think I saw that they tried changing like their walk up song
- 58:03or something. And there's maybe even maybe
- 58:07even saw a tweet about some little dance thing or something.
- 58:09I don't know. I I don't know what which of
- 58:11those things happened or didn't, but it sounds like they're
- 58:15trying. But it's something honestly.
- 58:19And it, this thought just came to my mind, and this is coming
- 58:24from personal experience, albeit at a, a much lower level in
- 58:27baseball. If you, if you look around your,
- 58:32your, your clubhouse, your dugout and call it 90% of the
- 58:38guys in there are pressing and they're all stoic like you were
- 58:41saying. And you got nobody to turn to.
- 58:44Sometimes the best antidote for that is if one of those very
- 58:48guys just completely breaks character.
- 58:51Yeah, true. And just cuts loose and you're
- 58:54going holy cow, if we've got this guy, if we've got Cedric
- 58:58Mullins of all people, who's just a pros pro going about his
- 59:03business everyday, win or lose, if we've got him going, OK,
- 59:07guys, we're we're showing up to the ballpark in, I don't know,
- 59:13ladies underwear. Not that they would do that, but
- 59:15if you, if you have him being the, the, the voice to, to put
- 59:21that out there or to suggest changing things up a little bit,
- 59:24you go, OK, we don't have a Nick Swisher in the clubhouse, but if
- 59:28one of our own is is suggesting this, maybe we can just take a
- 59:31deep breath and hit the reset button.
- 59:33And, and honestly, you can see it from either either part of
- 59:38the spectrum. It can either be the funny let
- 59:41loose or it can be like, you know what?
- 59:44Show me some freaking emotion, snap.
- 59:47True. Go break a bad over your knee,
- 59:50go throw a Gatorade cooler. Just like show me something like
- 59:55there's some type of release, whether it's anger, whether it's
- 59:59laughter and joy, like just show me something like, and I know
- 1:00:04there's a lot of fans on Twitter that are saying that about
- 1:00:07Brandon Hyde. Like it's been weird.
- 1:00:09Like there's moments where he should be freaking out that he
- 1:00:11doesn't. He doesn't do anything.
- 1:00:13And like then you, if a player, if a player is starting to freak
- 1:00:16out, he'll like. Pull him back and like not let
- 1:00:18him do it. They hit strange.
- 1:00:21They hit the walk off today the and and to use the word you use
- 1:00:24release. They mentioned that very word
- 1:00:26multiple times as like as the OR after the walk off happened like
- 1:00:31wow, like what a release that must have been for this team,
- 1:00:33that clubhouse. I'm watching Brandon Hyde in the
- 1:00:35post game presser and my man's just like sitting there and I'm
- 1:00:38not I'm not here slander Brandon Hyde.
- 1:00:40I I'm I think I've documented on this podcast.
- 1:00:43I'm I'm a supporter of his makes some questionable calls at
- 1:00:47times, but who doesn't? But he's sitting there in the
- 1:00:49post game presser and he's just like business as usual.
- 1:00:52Like not didn't even seem to be even breaking a smile.
- 1:00:55And I'm like, dude, your team needed this.
- 1:00:57I mean, you're going to be in the playoffs, but like you
- 1:01:00desperately needed this, this win and most we're getting out
- 1:01:04of you is just like a a couple canned responses.
- 1:01:07I don't know, it just seems. Weird.
- 1:01:09Something different dude. Like just just mix it up a
- 1:01:12little bit. Show me, show me something real,
- 1:01:15show me something human. Don't be so robotic going
- 1:01:18through it. Like even if it is answering
- 1:01:20questions in a funky way or, you know, wearing a wig in the
- 1:01:24clubhouse or you just something silly, dude.
- 1:01:27Like all this team needs is like, hey, I lost a bet in
- 1:01:32college football and now I have to dress up like an idiot
- 1:01:34because I made a bet with so and so, right?
- 1:01:36Like that's all this it's takes. It's just something little to be
- 1:01:40like, let's take the story off of how much of A scuffle this
- 1:01:45has been for two months. You know, they're fine.
- 1:01:50This this team is fine. Like, they're good.
- 1:01:52They're talented enough to succeed and do well in the
- 1:01:56postseason. I think they will be OK.
- 1:01:59But man, like, relax a little bit, dude.
- 1:02:03This is what has me a little nervous about the number of
- 1:02:06props that teams use at times. You know, there's a lot of props
- 1:02:11going on. I think you can't overdo it.
- 1:02:15And sometimes I feel like they've they've overdone it.
- 1:02:17Just the just the hair. I don't know, that's just me.
- 1:02:22That might be a little little hindsight, little revisionist,
- 1:02:25because that's like we were fans of what they are doing.
- 1:02:28I like some of it, but if we're doing too much of it, then it
- 1:02:31just gets awkward and weird. And then these stoic guys are,
- 1:02:35you know, taking shots out of the out of the Dong bong or
- 1:02:39Homer hose, whatever they call it.
- 1:02:41And they just, I don't know, it's it's not hitting the same.
- 1:02:46And then you're, you know, you can't ditch the the because the
- 1:02:49fans love it. It's just you put yourself in a
- 1:02:51weird spot. Well, Speaking of all that kind
- 1:02:56of along those lines, let's let's kind of wrap up here.
- 1:03:01I'd put out a tweet, I want to say yesterday talking about or,
- 1:03:09or posing the question rather what we think.
- 1:03:14And I, I know that like year to year, it's pretty consistent.
- 1:03:18Like it takes a lot for, for I think the, the quote UN quote,
- 1:03:21like playoff atmosphere, power rankings, if you will, to
- 1:03:25change. Like it takes something drastic
- 1:03:27has to happen. I feel like for it for that to
- 1:03:29get shuffled around too much, but just looking at at what
- 1:03:33we're dealing with at this point in time in terms of who's in the
- 1:03:37postseason, who's again in the hunt, in the mix, could possibly
- 1:03:41end up in the postseason. What atmospheres are we thinking
- 1:03:46based on the way this year has gone?
- 1:03:48Again, sometimes it takes something changing for for these
- 1:03:53rankings to shift. I'm not sure if maybe you feel
- 1:03:58like something has happened to where you feel like a team is,
- 1:04:01is bringing a new energy to the postseason this year or could
- 1:04:04bring a new energy to the postseason this year.
- 1:04:07Because I think you're going to have your you're going to have
- 1:04:09your staples, you're going to have your Philly.
- 1:04:11They're going to be just insane. I've I've been getting a lot of
- 1:04:16feedback and I've I've seen it on, you know, like on TVI
- 1:04:19haven't seen a person, but like San Diego is going to they're
- 1:04:24going to bring some juice. What do, what do we think are,
- 1:04:29do you think there's any surprises that we're going to
- 1:04:32stumble upon this offsea or this post season in terms of maybe
- 1:04:37some electric atmospheres? I think, I think Milwaukee, I
- 1:04:42said it earlier, I think that's a that's a fan base that like
- 1:04:45it's, it's indoors, it's it's somewhat of a smaller stadium,
- 1:04:49it's a smaller park. I think it I think it'll get
- 1:04:53pretty rowdy. The tough thing is that like
- 1:04:56it's hard to measure this right. Like some people measure
- 1:05:00rowdiness with like hostility, right?
- 1:05:04And you know, you're going to have your hostile environments
- 1:05:06in Philly and New York and then you're going to just going to
- 1:05:09have like Milwaukee. I don't, I don't think they're
- 1:05:12going to be like necessarily angry or yelling at other fans
- 1:05:17or throwing beers at other fans the way we've seen before.
- 1:05:20Hey, Corbin Carroll, you got a nice swing there, eh?
- 1:05:23Yeah. No.
- 1:05:24Why they Canadian? Why?
- 1:05:25That's like Canadian, I don't know.
- 1:05:29I don't know why I made those poor Midwesterners Canadian.
- 1:05:32Yeah, but that, you know, they, they're out there with their
- 1:05:35tapioca pudding. Yeah, yeah, they're I just, I
- 1:05:39think it's it's a hungry fan base and and they're and they're
- 1:05:44good sports fans. These are good sports fans in
- 1:05:48the Midwest, man. So I I think it's a little bit
- 1:05:51different when you're talking hostility.
- 1:05:53Yeah, I mean, I think Philly New Yorker like to that just other
- 1:05:57players are hearing things that they normally never hear.
- 1:06:01You know, opposing teams are dealing with stuff that they
- 1:06:03normally don't need to deal with.
- 1:06:07But I'm Milwaukee just gets me. It's me going a little bit.
- 1:06:12Same thing with Cleveland a little.
- 1:06:13Bit, yeah, yeah. I could see that a little bit.
- 1:06:20Check out the the the centrals. You know the centrals are.
- 1:06:24I'm going to need, I'm going to need Baltimore, the team we just
- 1:06:29talked about. I'm going to need them to figure
- 1:06:31it out over this, this final remaining stretch and then I'm
- 1:06:37going to need them. I'm sorry, but I'm going to need
- 1:06:40them to be handed a couple night games because speaking, speaking
- 1:06:46from personal experience, you and I were at that ALDS and
- 1:06:50granted the the Rangers just handed it to them, but like it
- 1:06:53just I mean, you and I talked about it on the drive home after
- 1:06:58both games. We're like, there's just
- 1:06:59something about this, these couple visits, these post season
- 1:07:04games that we were at that just didn't really hit.
- 1:07:06And I, and certainly part of that is the fact that the home
- 1:07:09team Orioles didn't didn't have much luck, but there was just
- 1:07:18not even just Camden. I think across the board, day,
- 1:07:20day, postseason baseball is just tough.
- 1:07:23And I think Philly really benefits from that.
- 1:07:25Because I feel like, I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, if, if
- 1:07:28somebody's watching or listening, like 90% sure that
- 1:07:34majority of Philly's games were, were at night.
- 1:07:38And I just feel like that's, that's, that's something that
- 1:07:40really I'm not, I'm not saying if Philly played during the day
- 1:07:44and I know they have had day playoff games recently, but I'm
- 1:07:47not saying if they played in the day that that just completely
- 1:07:49revokes their like what I would dub them as like top playoff
- 1:07:54atmosphere. I'm not saying that I would do
- 1:07:55that. But like, it's, it's certainly
- 1:07:58an advantage when you're just constantly in in prime time and,
- 1:08:02and your fans can just let it eat as as the clock ticks closer
- 1:08:08to midnight. Like there's, there's something
- 1:08:10about that. I don't feel like the Orioles
- 1:08:11really got that benefit. Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:08:14But I feel like going back to the original point I was making,
- 1:08:17I feel like Camden, should they figure things out and and the
- 1:08:22they can get those vibes back. I feel like that might be a that
- 1:08:27might be a a spot to keep an eye on.
- 1:08:32Yeah, yeah, I, I'm just, I'm just worried about how they feel
- 1:08:36about their team at the moment that is like this.
- 1:08:40Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I just don't know how much
- 1:08:42there's a combination of like there's this perfect cocktail of
- 1:08:45like hostility, the ballpark, the fan base and like the hope
- 1:08:53of it is this our year all kind of mixed in together and there's
- 1:09:00only a couple teams that check those boxes.
- 1:09:04It's fair. I don't know what the Orioles
- 1:09:05do. This year at least, yeah, I
- 1:09:08mean, it's it's fair. This, this last month for them,
- 1:09:11has really done a number. Yeah, and, and there's also
- 1:09:14like, I think there is a correlation with football, oddly
- 1:09:17enough. I really do.
- 1:09:19I think there's a correlation with like, you know, like you
- 1:09:21look at the Tigers, like the Lions run that city, the Lions
- 1:09:27run Detroit, and Lions fans are like, all in, like they were all
- 1:09:35in last year. This team is finally getting
- 1:09:38over the hump. They're good.
- 1:09:39And then it's like, I don't know, the Tigers are still
- 1:09:42young. They're just sneaking into the
- 1:09:44wild card. Yeah.
- 1:09:46I mean, I don't know. I think I'm going to go to the
- 1:09:48Lions game instead or I'm going to stay home for that, you know
- 1:09:50what I mean? It's just like, it depends.
- 1:09:54It depends How hungry is that fan base?
- 1:09:57What else is going on in that city?
- 1:09:59What do you got going on in Milwaukee?
- 1:10:01What what happens out there? Brewers.
- 1:10:04Postseason baseball Brewers. Postseason baseball.
- 1:10:06You know what I'm saying? That's what you got.
- 1:10:07I'm cooking this up, honestly. I'm manufacturing.
- 1:10:10I tell you what, I I did not have Nate becoming just the the
- 1:10:15biggest hard O Brewers fan. Yeah, you're welcome.
- 1:10:17Seemingly overnight. I did not have that on my bingo
- 1:10:21card, not going to lie. Yeah.
- 1:10:24But I love it. I'm I'm liking it.
- 1:10:25Hey, you know, you're you're practicing what we were what
- 1:10:28we've been preaching or what I've been preaching is, is
- 1:10:31turning the page. You know, let's let's refresh
- 1:10:34some of our narratives and talking points around some of
- 1:10:37these teams. And you've literally done that.
- 1:10:39You've literally done that with the Brewers.
- 1:10:41It's very true. We kind of did the same thing
- 1:10:42with the Orioles, but in the negative sense.
- 1:10:44Yeah, kind of raising some, some questions there, but yeah.
- 1:10:50I've also been up since 4:30 so I don't know what I'm saying.
- 1:10:52I couldn't forget it all by tomorrow morning.
- 1:10:55Who knows? It's been mostly coherent, OK,
- 1:10:59to your credit, to your credit, you didn't turn Wisconsin people
- 1:11:05into Canadians on this. That's.
- 1:11:07True. That's true.
- 1:11:08That's tough look. I've got that.
- 1:11:10It's a tough look, Yeah. I don't think they probably
- 1:11:13aren't thrilled with that. They're so close, you know,
- 1:11:17like, come on. Yeah.
- 1:11:19I mean the dialect is like the accents by the way, right there.
- 1:11:23Same thing with the Chiefs. I feel like the Chiefs are kind.
- 1:11:26Of no, let's not. We're not.
- 1:11:28We're not the Royals a little bit.
- 1:11:30We're not going to go. We're not going to start
- 1:11:31slandering the Royals and saying.
- 1:11:33That. No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:11:35Something about the ballpark, like Kaufman, doesn't get me
- 1:11:38fired. Up.
- 1:11:39No, stop. You know, stop.
- 1:11:41We're not going to slander the Royals the same way we just did
- 1:11:44with the with the the Orioles, all right?
- 1:11:47Not going to do it. We're going to get out of here
- 1:11:49on a positive note. What's a royal anyway?
- 1:11:55Like the title? Last thing I got before we get
- 1:11:58out of here. Royalty.
- 1:12:01I made such an effort last episode to avoid it that we
- 1:12:05actually just forgot it all together.
- 1:12:09I my heart kind of sank when I was editing the episode last on
- 1:12:14Monday. I was like, Oh my gosh, I I kind
- 1:12:17of ran with that bit a little too strong and we just didn't
- 1:12:20even talk about it. But for those wondering about
- 1:12:22our bet from this past weekend or it was an ongoing bet from
- 1:12:28the previous series, but the Yankees Red Sox matched up in a
- 1:12:31four-game series two weekends ago.
- 1:12:36I don't know what day it is. Sure, I.
- 1:12:38Don't even know what month it is.
- 1:12:41Who are you? No, the what are we?
- 1:12:45Doing. Why am I sitting here talking to
- 1:12:49the microphone? No, the Yankees took three out
- 1:12:52of four and I think the bet was who was going to have the better
- 1:13:00record between the two remaining regular season series.
- 1:13:05Yeah, as best as 7. Yeah.
- 1:13:07So it was a little bit of an ongoing bet there.
- 1:13:10And counting, the Yankees won five of those.
- 1:13:13Yeah, Yankees cleaned up and saw the losy the the loser of the
- 1:13:17bet. How much do we want to reveal
- 1:13:19here? Like I don't want to.
- 1:13:21I, I wish I kind of put this in like the stipulation of the bet,
- 1:13:26but I'd like, I'd like a tweet. I'd like a tweet about it I
- 1:13:30think just to get like a clear. Just in you mean in the in the?
- 1:13:34Well, look, I mean, when you're, when we're looking at the
- 1:13:37cropping of our video here, we're not going to get, you
- 1:13:41know. I'm going to have to like stand
- 1:13:43up for that episode or something, or however many
- 1:13:46episodes. I think we got to make some
- 1:13:47adjustments just to make sure it's it's visible.
- 1:13:50So I, I think I would like a tweet.
- 1:13:53I think I would appreciate a tweet.
- 1:13:55I would love for you to wear it to the office one day.
- 1:13:57Well, I'm not doing that. So basically, if you have no
- 1:14:00idea what I'm talking about, the loser the bet has to wear a
- 1:14:04rather embarrassing shirt. There would there would have,
- 1:14:06there was an option for me and an option for you.
- 1:14:09Your options not going to see the light of day given that you
- 1:14:12won the bet. Mine's going to be the one.
- 1:14:14I crafted it myself and you got to admit like it.
- 1:14:17It is very, very well put together shirt and it's one that
- 1:14:22I'm not going to be proud to wear, but I'm going to have to
- 1:14:25wear that for a number of episodes.
- 1:14:27I don't remember what we decided, I think it was like.
- 1:14:29I thought it was 10. I thought we said ten.
- 1:14:31Yeah, yeah. 10 between the end of the season and opening day.
- 1:14:37So yeah, that shirt will make its debut.
- 1:14:41I we save that for the offseason.
- 1:14:43Soon, I hope. I don't know, That's up to you.
- 1:14:45Whatever 10 episodes you want to get in, my friend.
- 1:14:47I'll save it for the offseason. We'll see, yeah.
- 1:14:52Man, I want you to throw that thing on just for one second.
- 1:14:56The first day you get it. Just give me one in the regular
- 1:14:59season I got to. I'll get, yeah, I'll get you
- 1:15:01some, I'll get you some. And then I also have to make a
- 1:15:03donation in my name. That's right, I forgot about
- 1:15:07the. Yankee, the Yankees Foundation,
- 1:15:09which I'm, whatever I'm, I'm more than happy to do that.
- 1:15:12Was I would I would love a tweet about that as well, but.
- 1:15:14That was that was a positive twist.
- 1:15:16I don't really care that that's that's for a good cause, but the
- 1:15:19shirt is going to be what what what gets me in trouble.
- 1:15:23But. Sure, it's awesome.
- 1:15:25I can't wait for you guys to see it.
- 1:15:27It's so good. I hope they print it.
- 1:15:29I like legitimately, I hope they didn't look at that and go like.
- 1:15:33This is the creepiest thing ever.
- 1:15:34We can't do this for a variety of reasons, but anyway, that'll
- 1:15:38be that's on its way hopefully soon and we'll make its debut
- 1:15:42soon. But other than that, I think
- 1:15:44that's all we got. Good stuff, everybody.
- 1:15:46Let's have a good weekend. Let's get out there.
- 1:15:49Look, it's Friday. Soak this in.
- 1:15:53That's huge. That's.
- 1:15:55Huge sorry to those of you who are like watching and it's like
- 1:16:06midnight basically and you just put your kid down to bed and
- 1:16:11just woke him up. Sorry about that.
- 1:16:13I'm not. But it's Thursday, which
- 1:16:16basically means it's Friday, and which, as you know, means it's
- 1:16:20the weekend, so. That's right.
- 1:16:23Good stuff everybody. Excellent job today.
- 1:16:26We'll see you guys Sunday. What was the real quick did did
- 1:16:29we get, did we get any the comments about like being in or
- 1:16:33out or their teams in or out? Some Yankees, some Dodgers fans.
- 1:16:36That's. Good, that's good.
- 1:16:38We got people that still have a positive outlook on life as of
- 1:16:42right now. That's true that that number is
- 1:16:43going to dwindle as as each day passes.
- 1:16:46But shout out to those of you who still have a reason to to
- 1:16:52get up in the morning for your baseball team.
- 1:16:54It must be nice because I don't know what that's like right now.
- 1:16:56So. Tough whether your team is in,
- 1:16:59whether they are out, whether you don't know or not.
- 1:17:02Don't go chasing curveballs. We love you all as always.
- 1:17:05Looking forward to talking more baseball with you guys soon.
- 1:17:07Until next time, stay filthy.
