- 0:00Welcome back to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're live at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue.
- 0:04This is the like let's see here, Friday Center Center. This fourth
- 0:06day of a moniacal time for us on the network. We've got a triple
- 0:11header of coaches shows on Wednesday, football at six g you know, at
- 0:15seven, early at eight on the Yukon Sports networking online via the Varsity Network
- 0:19app. And we've got a Mend's game tomorrow at the XL Yukon and Mississippi
- 0:23Valley State. We've got Coach cav here with us. Still take on BC
- 0:26this weekend. We'll talk about that later. But your power play is starting
- 0:30to produce a little bit over the last couple of weekends. And it started
- 0:33with that innocent Andrew Lucas gole late in the third period in the first game
- 0:37up there on Friday up in Burlington. Yeah, I think we're five of
- 0:40eleven in our last four games on the power play, and you know,
- 0:44I knew it would get better. We had some chances early on, you
- 0:49know, I thought, you know, before that Vermont weekend and started to
- 0:54show some signs of life. And then lately we've been getting contributions from both
- 0:59you too. I mean Nick Capone's goal was a textbook power play goal that
- 1:03he got us on the board against Merrimac at Merrimack with a little bang bang
- 1:10play with Mash chip that I well, Brad's went down to Mash to Nick
- 1:14and found him in the slot and it was a great goal for us.
- 1:17So we need both of those units going, that's for sure. The start
- 1:22of the year on the power play was slow in terms of actually cashing in
- 1:26on opportunities. So when you're saying you saw it was starting to turn that
- 1:30even if goals weren't coming that they were about to. How what are you
- 1:34seeing as a coach to know, Okay, they're starting to find their rhythm.
- 1:38A lot of zone time, the pucks not be installed. You know,
- 1:42the puck isn't dying on someone's stick. A lot of times when power
- 1:46plays are not successful, it's one guy holding on to the puck too long.
- 1:51It's people getting shots blocked. You want to shoot pucks, but you
- 1:56wanted me able to have a lane. You don't want that first layer to
- 1:59block shot. So if you can get pucks down in the net, I
- 2:01don't mind if the defenseman block them down by the net because a lot of
- 2:05times they can go ricochet off to one of your guys and that's a great
- 2:07scoring chance. So it's you know, it's been a work in progress,
- 2:14but I like where it is right now. What do you see with MADDI
- 2:15would lately and he and Hudson just seem to have that special chemistry between the
- 2:20two of them. Yeah, I think they're both playing well. I told
- 2:22Maddie today, you know, he's certainly is skilled forward. But Maddy can
- 2:25play a hard game when he has to. And I told him today,
- 2:30I said, you know, you need to constantly want to play that hard
- 2:34game and or a physical game and heavy game. You know, there are
- 2:38some guys that are super skilled and can get up and down the ice and
- 2:43they can make plays off the rush, but it's hard when the game gets
- 2:46really physical, it's hard for them to play in those types of games.
- 2:51But that's not the case with Maddie. He has that ability and I'd like
- 2:53to see him start, you know, doing that consistently all the time.
- 3:00How much muscle did he put on from the offseason, right you know,
- 3:05I think it's substantial from where he was at last year and he's uh,
- 3:08he's got like big legs and he's strong, and he's still growing. I
- 3:13mean he's still in the eighteen years old can say he's six' three.
- 3:16That's not right. I mean he's got to be taller than he seems it.
- 3:20He does seems out there. Yeah. Yeah, but I think it's
- 3:23also helped. You know, what I think has helped his game on the
- 3:27power play is having Samu on the other flank because Samu can hit it too,
- 3:31so it's not like they can just you know, key on Maddie and
- 3:36like, let's take away matt Wood because Samu, as you've seen lately,
- 3:38can really rip a puck and he scored some goals for us on that flank.
- 3:44Something I've wanted to ask. So, Matthew Wood, he's a top
- 3:46fifteen pick by the Nashville Predators. How much conversation do you have with Nashville
- 3:53at the moment in terms of guiding what is a valued commodity for their organization?
- 4:00Yeah? Well, both of their development coaches played for me, so
- 4:03quite a bit. Actually, Nathan Gerby and Rob's Canaria, Yeah, developed
- 4:10Cashville. So I have a great rapport with those guys and they're good too.
- 4:15I've told them leave them alone when you were playing. When you were
- 4:19playing, you didn't want a lot of people in your ear all the time,
- 4:23So just let him play. And I think Scot's a little better than
- 4:26that than Gerbs, so I'm working with him. That actually dubtails into a
- 4:30follow up that I had. So even Hyder comes to the Yukon Hansky's as
- 4:35a transfer, but he is a farm hand of Nashville Predators. So does
- 4:40your relationship with your two former players play into that transfer situation? No,
- 4:46okay, not really that that wasn't the case. I think it was just,
- 4:50you know, Logan left us and we were scrambling for another goaltender and
- 4:56Ethan had just decided to enter the portal, and you know, we have
- 5:00conversations with him and it worked out. So but it really didn't have anything
- 5:03to do with Nathan o'rupp. Well, just because of all the NHL teams,
- 5:06it seems like Nashville keeps popping up with Yakam, Condo, Leigue and
- 5:11now Ethan and matthew Wood. It just feels like in Bomachhka, it just
- 5:15feels like over the last handful of years that Nashville really liked. What is
- 5:18happening with your program? Yeah, well I hope that's the case. Yeah,
- 5:24you know, Yeah, good to see nicopoone get on the scoreboard on
- 5:28Saturday. He's been dealing with a lot of injury too. Yeah. What
- 5:31do you think his mindset is and how he's battled through it to just try
- 5:34to get back on the ice and get things done. I think it was
- 5:40great to have him back. I thought that was his best weekend of the
- 5:42year. Last weekend. I thought he did a really nice job getting in
- 5:46on the ford check on Hudson's goal on Friday night, and then you know,
- 5:50paired with Tabor and Mash on Saturday, they were a force that line.
- 5:57He made a spectacular pass to Mash for the third goal, and as
- 6:02I alluded to earlier, he scored our first goal, So it was,
- 6:05uh, we need that from Nick. He's a big physical presence and he
- 6:10had a bone crushing hit during the game too, So that who put the
- 6:15Merrimac guy through the door when the door was open, I don't know who
- 6:18that was. That's a dangerous play. I always worry about that like that.
- 6:23That's you know, I likes big hits and whatnot. But that's always
- 6:27a dangerous play. It kid's changing and when you're working that door, you've
- 6:31got to keep that thing shut when the kids coming. You can't just no,
- 6:34it's it's right. It be better for him to go into the door
- 6:39with it shut than when it opens. That was that was scary. Wow,
- 6:44Nick Capone, He's another one of the guys that's the property of an
- 6:47NHL team. What area right now? For Nick? Do you see has
- 6:55evolved from his time as a freshman till now. That makes him that much
- 7:00more attractive for when he goes pro well, he Nicks battles some injuries throughout
- 7:06his career here. You know, Nick is a really effective player for us
- 7:14when he's moving his feet, he's skating, and he plays physical and that's
- 7:17the game he's going to have to play in the NHL as well, So
- 7:20we just kind of keep encouraging him to play that way for us. Same
- 7:24with Chase. Chase is similar. Yeah, Chase is a similar player.
- 7:28Uh. You know, he's a physical, hard nosed kid that is extremely
- 7:34valuable for our team. You know, plays in a lot of situations.
- 7:38Have you had guys his size, because Chase isn't that big a guy,
- 7:41I mean compared like to Nick. I mean, he's a good sized guy.
- 7:44But does he remind you of anybody that you've had in the past elsewhere
- 7:47even to be here or ABC? It's a good question. Uh, not
- 7:54really. You know, he's such a powerful guy. For he's probably just
- 7:58a hair under six foot now they got him five eleven. Yeah, he's
- 8:01probably closer to one ninety, I would say. But he's so explosive and
- 8:07heavy on his skates. You know, there are some guys that are big,
- 8:09but they get knocked down all the time. Chase is just really compact,
- 8:15low center of gravity, and he's hard to knock off the puck.
- 8:20And he's a vicious hitter like he he Oh yeah, yeah, he gets
- 8:24a lot hey onloads and unleashes. His timing is great when he hits kids.
- 8:31So he was a good player. Speaking of players, your son's here
- 8:35he is, Yeah, he's driving now right it is? Yep. Wow,
- 8:37that's nice to see him. I was bummed out. I miss Senior
- 8:39Knight the other night, but they had a big win over Plainville. There
- 8:41you go love that? Did he did he playing? Yeah? Position linebackers?
- 8:46Oh? Nice? Yeah, nice, so very good. All right,
- 8:48We'll take a break, come back with more with cav later. It
