- Jogo: Welcome to Best Most. I'm your host, Jose Jogo Gonzalez. This is the podcast where we ask the questions, what is the best or what is the most? For example, we ask questions like what is the most dramatic scene with a puppet? Or what is the best song to play when you're at the park? Before each episode, I ask our online community a question that our guests had chosen as our topic. I then go over the community answers with our guests and we also discuss our own answers. You can check out and answer the questions on the best dot most dot pod Instagram page. join the conversation. Today we welcome back a friend and super knowledgeable person in the optical field and many other fields as well. He goes under two names. One is Optical Jedi and the other is Rick Peralta. He has been a part of our of Charity Works as well, been in a Dexicon commercial. Welcome to Best Mos Rick Peralta. OpticalJedi: Thanks so much. It's always great to see you, Jose. Thank you much for having me back again. ⁓ I love this kind of stuff. It's a lot of fun. Jogo: Like yeah, I think you're good at it too. I think you're a very knowledgeable guy and ⁓ well rounded person. And I I think that's pretty awesome. I'm glad you're here. OpticalJedi: Thank you. Jogo: Today we answer the question, what is the best movie soundtrack? As always, our guest chooses the question, Rick Peralta, what made you choose this one? OpticalJedi: ⁓ well, you know, I am I I'm my my life has buried in in film. I I love movies of all kinds. ⁓ I've been you know, again I think it's part of that that Gen X ⁓ growing up in the theater practically, you know, all summer long you just sit in the movie theater and enjoy it. ⁓ and I've you know, I think because of my Star Wars love and and kind of finding film composition through John Williams and that kind of thing. I've always had a real interest in paying attention to who's doing the music. And, you know, and of course you grow up in the eighties, you know, the all these movies that had such great pop music scores and rock music scores. So like it just becomes like this ⁓ this cultural moment that I like it's just a tied so deeply that like I can't turn it off when I'm in films. I'm at any kind of movie. I'm always like I'm trying to guess the composer before I see their name just based on what I'm hearing, I'm really into that kind of thing. Jogo: That's cool. That's yeah, that's advanced. I don't know if I could do that, but ⁓ that's pretty awesome. So ⁓ we do have a few community answers. ⁓ we're gonna start that ⁓ with Candace Ramirez18 She chose Bohemian ⁓ and Baby Driver. OpticalJedi: Ha ha ha. Jogo: Really great. ⁓ especially Baby Driver. I really loved Baby Driver as a movie. And that that movie, I think, lives and dies by the soundtrack, I think. OpticalJedi: I I don't know there are many movies out there that have ⁓ as completely made the music an absolutely integral necessary part of the film. Like the wind should wipes and the gunshots all beat to the rhythm of the music. ⁓ it's really incredible. And I don't know if you know this, but if you watch that movie with earbuds in, when he loses his ears his earbud, you actually lose the sound on one side. And you only hear on the other side. Like it's like they really thought seriously about how how key music and sound and score and rhythm all tie in that Jogo: ⁓ remember watching it for the first time and not knowing quite what to expect, but leaving the theater just being just super impressed ⁓ but yeah, OpticalJedi: Yeah, absolutely. Jogo: Bohemian Rhapsody is a great movie too. OpticalJedi: I mean how how do you go wrong with Queen, right? So Jogo: I am ⁓ let's see. ⁓ Yeah, I can't say much more. It's ⁓ Queen's an amazing band and that movie was all queen. I am Caesar Rod, who is our guest fairly recently. ⁓ he's he chose Once a Time in Hollywood. It's like driving around in LA in the sixties listening to the radio. I couldn't more. OpticalJedi: there are some films that do that ⁓ that kind specific time period tie so well and that's definitely one of the highlights in that collection. Jogo: Yeah. And ⁓ just kinda like like I'm sure we're gonna hear this soon, but like Guardians of the Galaxy, a lot of those needle drops are just like fuck dude, gold. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Absolutely. Jogo: ⁓ Mr. Sam Slick, he chose Superfly by Curtis Mayfield. Every song stands on its own in addition to adding to the movie. OpticalJedi: Curtis Mayfield was a true like soul god, you know? He was incredible. And yeah, he's not wrong. That that that that is a cover to cover spectacular album. Jogo: Hello Becca chose Virgin Suicide that's a that is a soundtrack. ⁓ I believe most of it it's by the band ⁓ OpticalJedi: Yeah, and i if I recall that's ⁓ it's a Sophia Coppola film and she's usually really good with that kind of stuff too. ⁓ you know, you look at like the Marie Antoinette film she did, where they y you know, it's a period piece but using modern music and like she's always really good at finding songs that that really perfectly match the emotion of a moment. Jogo: Yeah. Yeah. Well, especially like that soundtrack too, because Air is such a very atmospheric band in general that that fits that movie so well. It sets the the tone of that movie altogether. it's almost like ⁓ another part of the set design in way OpticalJedi: absolutely. You know, it's ⁓ ⁓ not from this film obviously, but in a similar vein. I feel like ⁓ like any of the films that from the eighties that were using Vangelis for for the score, it's that same kind of this this very atmospheric sound that Like sometimes is even like slower paced ⁓ than the the action sequences you're watching, but somehow perfectly match. You know, you think about something like Blade Runner, which they did, you know, and or ⁓ I know this is a much smaller niche film that not many people have seen, but it's one of my personal favorites. Miracle Mile, spectacular score. Again, Vangelis just really nailing it. Jogo: Yeah. Hmm. I wonder if that also just that that technique is to kind of slow the pace of the of the scene. Like like what OpticalJedi: Yeah, I I think sometimes it it it makes the like y if you have a juxtaposition between the speed of the action and the speed of the music, it makes d the emotion hit harder in the action. Instead of it just being fun, it becomes real. Jogo: I can see that. ⁓ so let's see. Bruja underscore Rosa fifty eight. She chose Sinners. ⁓ Yeah. Great, great soundtrack. a phenomenal movie movie as well too. OpticalJedi: I know it's one of my daughter's favorites and she's I know my daughter's favorites and Jogo: movie as well too. OpticalJedi: giant music nut. Jogo: Cass underscore ⁓ underscore fitness, Guardian of the Galaxy. I think ⁓ any of movies in that trilogy, all of their ⁓ their soundtracks are are really great. OpticalJedi: And again they're they're songs that are great by themselves but also perfectly match the moments in the film. Jogo: Yeah, like they enhance the scene quite a bit. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: Edro underscore De Carmona. He said, I really like the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. ⁓ tell me I'm wrong, I dare you. You're not wrong. ⁓ OpticalJedi: Yeah, i you ⁓ what you like what you like, so you can't be wrong, right? Jogo: Yeah, that's what this whole podcast is. You y there's no right or wrong wrong answer. Love what you love. OpticalJedi: Exactly. Jogo: but yeah, that movie okay, also what's cool about soundtracks like that is that if it's some someone watches that movie at a fairly young age, they're all of a sudden exposed to all this amazing music that they probably never would have listened to. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: ⁓ again, Guardians of the Galaxy, I think the same thing. You you have all these like young Marvel fans Listen to all these amazing songs and they would have Yeah. OpticalJedi: Like even yacht rock songs. Like, you know, what what what kid today is exposed to yacht rock? But there it is and it works. Jogo: Yep. And let's see. So ⁓ next person. ⁓ nice. ⁓ ⁓ Kevin's on social media. He chose Guardians of the Galaxy. There we go. OpticalJedi: There you go. Get a few repeats here. Jogo: ⁓ Don Juan Estrada, he chose a few. He said The Crow also chose singles, the Cameron Crow film from the early nineties, ⁓ Train Spotting and Clueless. OpticalJedi: Mm. Very good choices, definitely. And yeah, I think ⁓ you know, singles certainly for my generation, that just that hits so hard. And what's really incredible about that soundtrack is that you had like it was made before they all famous. Before the grunge scene had hit, the film was already done. So you had these grunge artists like you know Chris Cornell and Eddie Vetter and all these guys were in the movie just as actors because they were just guys in town that knew Cameron Crow and that's all it was. And yet you these songs that dropped on that that weren't available anywhere else were so phenomenal ⁓ from all those artists. You know, it's ⁓ it's an incredible, incredible soundtrack. Jogo: Yeah, and I remember Singles was kind of like a reality bites kind of esque kind of film, but more for like that kind of ⁓ alternative lifestyle in a way. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah, no and honestly, Jogo: Grunge. OpticalJedi: ⁓ and as as as I loved Reality Bites when it came out, and I mean obviously it's again a spectacular soundtrack, you know, I mean it brought my Sharona back into the world in a way like nobody could have imagined. ⁓ Reality Bites felt a little bit more like a polished Hollywood version ⁓ of what Gen X was supposed to be, and singles felt like the real of what a Gen X angst was. Jogo: ⁓ yeah. Mm. both good movies, but yeah, I I c I see what you're saying. I remember like one of my friends, she loved reality bites ⁓ and she would quote that movie all the And I remember watching that movie. OpticalJedi: Very quotable, absolutely. Jogo: ⁓ if you also ⁓ if you want to listen to our last podcast with Rick, ⁓ check it out. Quotable films. But ⁓ yeah. ⁓ There you go. OpticalJedi: Nice nice nice little ⁓ sideways plug there. I appreciate that. Jogo: But ⁓ yeah, both good movies. I gotta rewatch singles. It's been a while. ⁓ The Crow, I fucking love that movie. But also that soundtrack is so good. Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails. Ooh man, OpticalJedi: Well, it I I can tell you that I I can tell you that Jogo: great songs. OpticalJedi: flat out that's one of my my wife's absolute favorite soundtracks. We do have it on vinyl. ⁓ We listen in the house all the ⁓ It's ⁓ it it is great cover cover. Jogo: Yeah, yeah. Stephen Joseph Craig, he chose Gummo. I haven't heard the soundtrack and I haven't seen Gummo in a long time. I'm sure it's an amazing soundtrack and movie. have you seen Gummo before? OpticalJedi: No, I d I'm not familiar with that one. Jogo: one of those movies that f I feel like it feels a little like ⁓ stale. Not like the movie is stale. it's like or have you seen kids before? The movie Kids. You know how that movie feels a little dirty a little bit as you're watching it? It feels kinda like that in a way. But I would definitely watch Gummo. Yeah. And I I just I don't remember the the soundtrack. I had seen it like so many years ago. So yeah. OpticalJedi: Okay, yeah. ⁓ huh. Okay, yeah. Mm-hmm. Okay. Interesting. Yeah. Jogo: I'm sure it's great. ⁓ the Jason, ⁓ he chose singles, another singles fan. Matt Dylan. ⁓ let's see. Bass Boomer83, he chose a crow. And ⁓ Davo DWBC, he chose Sinners. ⁓ great movies, great soundtracks. ⁓ you're not wrong. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: So let's go into our our picks. So ⁓ Rick Peralta, what is the best movie soundtrack? OpticalJedi: Well, I'm I'm gonna preface this a little bit because I feel like w we've hit a little bit on this through hearing the community picks on this, but I feel like ⁓ this is a a category where we really need to kind of break down into different versions of soundtracks, right? So you've got the pop slash rock ⁓ score movies, the ones that Like you had the actual score music in the movie, but then they released an album that was a bunch of pop songs that were you maybe heard snippets in the film and that was part of it. ⁓ or you got something like Guardians that's just straight up like that's the the core of what it's trying to do. ⁓ and then you've got the actual like film scores, you know, the the things like the Star Wars and that kind of thing. And then you also have this kind of ⁓ like maybe this kind of niche subcategory. Where like those two categories you can listen to those albums without the film and they just they hit, right? But there's this other one where the score is spectacular, but I'm not sure you can separate it from watching the movie. If you just sit down and listen to the music, it doesn't work by itself. It needs the the the visuals to really make it fully play out. So I'm gonna lead with that category. Jogo: ⁓ yeah. Okay. OpticalJedi: first like that one for me ⁓ oceans eleven spectacular score but if you just to sit down and listen to that album it doesn't quite it doesn't have a rhythm and flow ⁓ to work as a as a just a sit and listen but you put Jogo: Yeah. OpticalJedi: that in the in the theater and you where you sit down and watch that ⁓ that blu-ray ⁓ and it's just like ⁓ man, it's so good. That that funky little jazz percussion stuff going on and like it's just ⁓ it's such ⁓ great little drops for each moment that truly speaks to what watching on the ⁓ so that's my category number one. Jogo: Mm-hmm. OpticalJedi: Category Category Jogo: Okay. OpticalJedi: number two, ⁓ we're talking know, your actual film score, right? The the the just the great composition. And I'm gonna something in here that ⁓ might not feel like it fits, but I feel like it fits. And this is one of those ones like I don't care what my mood is. I don't care what time of day it is. I don't care what time of year it is. I could put this on any time and I'm gonna be in a really good mood. And that's Tron Legacy. That Daft Punk Jogo: ⁓ okay. OpticalJedi: That Daft Punk album is one of the best soundtracks ever made, period. It's just cover-to-cover spectacular. ⁓ It's got vibe and energy. ⁓ It's the Daft Punk album ever. Like it's for a reason. It's really spectacular. ⁓ and then my final one for your your pop culture kind of rock mix. ⁓ a of ⁓ a couple of my mentions were mentioned earlier, but this ⁓ one of my actual my true answer was listed. And that is Baby Driver. I just like while it is made better with the visuals, you listen to that album by itself and it's so great. I've got ⁓ like a a playlist that I've made it for hype for when I'm going to play hockey or I'm going to practice, I want to get my energy up, I want to feel it. And nothing does better than bell bottoms from Baby Driver to get you in the mood to fly as fast as you can and move in weird ways and just be untouchable. Jogo: Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Mm. OpticalJedi: And it's just such a great score. Jogo: Yeah, I need that on vinyl at some point. ⁓ OpticalJedi: Yeah. Jogo: shit dude. Yeah, that I don't think I've ever seen a movie that incorporated music so well and so ⁓ importantly as baby driver. ⁓ damn. OpticalJedi: Edgar Wright's touched on this a couple of times. He is ⁓ really at ⁓ weaving through his stories. I mean, even with like ⁓ if look at ⁓ shoot, why'd I just blank on the name? ⁓ the No, was gonna go with ⁓ with ⁓ the the one with ⁓ Michael Michael Sarah. ⁓ Scott Scott Pilgrim, like Jogo: Mm-hmm. Shaw the dead. Last night at Soho. Huffers. ⁓ Scott Pilgrim. Yeah. OpticalJedi: It's they're all it's original songs, but they all hit so great in their moments. You know, we are sex babom b one, two, three, pr like that just it it just drives the energy. And then of course Shawn of the Dead's got great music all the way through. ⁓ Hot Fuzz has got great music all the way through. ⁓ dropping the the Queen and with the don't stop me when when they're beating out the zombies and Shauna the Dead. And I'm like, this just ⁓ he he he knows how to work music ⁓ and ⁓ Jogo: Yeah. Da da da da da da da da. Yeah. ⁓ Iconic. OpticalJedi: There have been other filmmakers I think that were also really good at this. Ones that frankly I was surprised weren't brought up earlier. Like ⁓ Quentin Tarantino. Well, I mean, we did get Quentin Tarantro once, but pulp fiction stuff, you know, like ⁓ it's ⁓ so great setting the tone with these music where these these filmmakers, you know, they're the ones that are really making choices the songs. And I think Scorsese too. Good fellas is a is spectacular. You know, casino is spectacular at setting the tone of a time and a place by choosing the right sounds, the right songs. And and I ⁓ Edgar writes the modern version of that. Jogo: Yeah, because it doesn't necessarily have to be a song about what's happening in the movie, as long as it gives the same feel that the director or you know is is trying to convey ⁓ in that mood OpticalJedi: Yeah. It's creating the Jogo: of that scene. OpticalJedi: energy of the moment. Jogo: someone also mentioned Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I love that movie. That soundtrack is really great. But ⁓ I I yeah, damn man, there's all these amazing directors that are able to utilize needle drops in the best way. OpticalJedi: ⁓ for me the the the the standout Tarantino for me is actually the Kill Bill series. Like the song uses are so spectacular in that movie. it's crossed so many genres and they all work in each moment so perfectly. Even when they like you think about some of them and it's like, how does that song belong in in this Jogo: Mm. OpticalJedi: fight against the crazy eighty eights, but somehow it does. It belongs there. Like he just it's so good. And the the fight with Oranishi in the snow is so great. Jogo: Yeah. ⁓ that's ⁓ misunderst ⁓ Lord. Well no no no no that's misunderstood. Right, yeah. But it's like a different version of it. It's like more acoustic version. Yeah. I love that. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Yeah. It's Yeah, it's just so good. yeah, the he he's got a natural talent for understanding song use, for sure. Jogo: Yeah. Have you seen the the whole bloody affair? OpticalJedi: I haven't seen it yet. I know it's available on Peacock right now, and ⁓ we wanted to see it in the theater so bad at his theater because you know he owns the Vista up in Hollywood and we wanted to go see it there, but it was only available for like one weekend and there was no way for us to get up there in time. that i if you've never been to the Vista, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's a great little single screen theater. Jogo: Yeah. Yeah. I have not been there. I I had just recently had been to the Frida ⁓ in Santa Ana. You mentioned it in the last podcast. But yeah. ⁓ so OpticalJedi: ⁓ yeah. Mm hmm. F Fried is a great house. ⁓ F Fried is a great house. ⁓ Jogo: that that place is pretty cool. OpticalJedi: yeah, like they do so many great ⁓ you know, reissues. ⁓ Jogo: Yeah. Yeah, I'm thinking about getting a membership. so ⁓ those are your picks. OpticalJedi: Yeah, those are my picks. Jogo: Good great picks, great picks. ⁓ so ⁓ I do have a couple of picks here. ⁓ I'm gonna I'm gonna do this a little differently. I'm gonna go through the track listing of the picks. ⁓ my first main pick is the Garden State soundtrack. And that was in ⁓ 2004. ⁓ I remember going to the Arc Light to watch this movie OpticalJedi: ⁓ man. Y you're making my heart ache a little bit. ⁓ R.I.P. Arc light. ⁓ Jogo: ⁓ dude, I used to that Arc Light was a special place. I'll say that for sure. Really? OpticalJedi: You know, I worked there for a ⁓ for a beat. When in between my optical jobs, I worked there for a minute just so I could go to movies for cheap. And ⁓ I loved introducing the films and that's one of those ones that I did introduce. Like it's so great. Yeah. Jogo: ⁓ Yeah. Really? I wonder if you were there when I was when I went to go check it out. I I remember I think Jack Black was there and so was one of the Olsen twins. OpticalJedi: Ha ha ha. ⁓ wow. That's really cool. ⁓ Jogo: Yeah, I I went to Yeah, we I we I went to the restroom after w watching the movie. Or actually I waited for someone going to the restroom and ⁓ Jack Black and ⁓ one of the Olson twins just started talking right next like really close by and ⁓ I at that time I loved Jack Black too and I wanted to go up and be like, ⁓ but I didn't want to bother anyone. didn't want to bother anyone. OpticalJedi: you never knew who you were you never knew who you were Jogo: Yeah. ⁓ OpticalJedi: run into in that theater. It was ⁓ that was one of the it was truly like a filmmaker's theater. And that was a lot of fun. You just never knew what you'd run into. Jogo: Mm-hmm. Yeah, it was that was a special place. so let's see. The track listing opens up with Cold Plays, Don't Panic. Great song. And and and great song to open up the movie with, you know? ⁓ OpticalJedi: Absolutely. Jogo: that's the scene where he's ⁓ kind of out and then getting gas and then he leaves the the gas pump in there, gas ⁓ handle in there. ⁓ carrying his creepy the shins, ⁓ great mo great song. ⁓ that's OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. The shins are so good in that. Jogo: That was the first time I've heard of the Shins. And I just remember thinking like holy shit, I'm gonna know this band forever. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Jogo: in the l in the waiting line, ⁓ by zero is the next track. New Slang again by the Shins. Very beautiful scene. ⁓ I just don't think I'll get over you by Colin Hay. Very moving song. ⁓ Blue Eyes by Carrie Brothers. ⁓ Fair by Remy Zero. ⁓ one of the things, one of these things first by Nick Drake. Beautiful song. Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corporation. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jogo: The Only Living Boy New York. That's the first time I ever heard that song. And loved it ever since by Simon and Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel. OpticalJedi: ⁓ absolutely. Jogo: ⁓ such great heights by ⁓ I believe that's a cover by Iron and Wine. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: Let Go by Fru Fru, sung by Heap. That's end of the movie. and then Winding Road by Bonnie Small Somerville. ⁓ that movie, I remember like to me, the Frufru or Emojin Heap, that was my first introduction to her, really. ⁓ And that movie, that that song just a left a lasting impression. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. That soundtrack is one of those great examples of of something that tonally so matches the tone of the film. the sonic landscape ⁓ is ⁓ ethereal and atmospheric, and every single one of those songs it its own way. ⁓ and like I I'm not even remotely joking. I think that that was like for ⁓ maybe a solid two, three years. that album was put on as I went to bed 'cause like that music is just so perfect to just put you in a very calm, relaxed space and and get into a good REM sleep, you know? It was just it's such a great s score. Jogo: Mm. Yeah. It's bot especially those Colin that Colin Hay song and the Nick Drake songs. Just very like yeah, beautiful, like mostly acoustic kinda songs. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, and it's th there's just there's something ⁓ it's that that very kind of warm tone to the sounds. It's just like I don't know, there's something really like you're being wrapped up in a nice blanket, you know? It's just a it's a great sound. Jogo: Mm-hmm. Yeah. But and then what you what's cool is that you also have those songs by the Shins and the Coldplay, and also Thievery Corporation that give the movie a little bit of weight and a little bit of edge to it too. So it's not all like calm it's calm, but it's like, okay, this song this this this this soundtrack OpticalJedi: ⁓ Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's like yeah, it's like even the edgy stuff, ⁓ the or the like quote unquote harder stuff in there, it's still got ⁓ there's a richness to the sound. It's not just harsh, it's it's complex. You know, it's ⁓ it's like it's like drinking that nice scotchy scotch from the last episode. Jogo: Yes, there you go. Yes. Which you should all listen to. But ⁓ yeah. Yeah, I I agree. Yeah, complex, ⁓ calm, but again, like a little edge to it. So and I and I and I remember getting that soundtrack. I had it on CD for a good while, and it's one of those soundtracks that just stayed in my CD player for for weeks. ⁓ and I didn't mind it. I was really lazy with that, but that one I it was on purpose. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Yeah. Jogo: So then my runner up. ⁓ okay, so I'm gonna preface this pre-preface this one with ⁓ saying that, okay, there's certain soundtracks. I used to work in ⁓ lens crafters in a lab, and we would have we each would have our day that we can choose the music and our shifts. and I would always choose Wes Anderson soundtracks because there's so many layers to these soundtracks. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. ⁓ nice. ⁓ man. I think I know where you're going and I like it. Jogo: And I don't know. I don't know, because there's a few good ones, but I'm gonna choose this one, although I do love a lot of Wes Anderson soundtracks, but I'm gonna go with Royal Tenenbaums in two thousand one. There you go. Yes. OpticalJedi: That's the one that was in my head. That that one is the one for me. Jogo: so okay, we'll go through the track lists. The first one, the first song is one eleven Archer Avenue by Mark Mothersball. Is that how you pronounce his name? Do you know? Perfect. OpticalJedi: Yeah. And do you know who he is? Jogo: He's from Devo, right? OpticalJedi: Yeah, he's the he's the leading Devo. Jogo: go. ⁓ OpticalJedi: A ⁓ such a completely different sound when doing his own thing. Jogo: ⁓ yeah. But still really interesting ⁓ approaches to scoring for sure. ⁓ OpticalJedi: Yeah, for sure. Jogo: These Days by Nico, classic, beautiful, ⁓ sobering song. OpticalJedi: Yeah. And that scene that scene like that song hits so beautifully in that scene. Jogo: Damn it. So good. ⁓ string quartet in F major by Yosei Quartet. sonato for cello and piano F minor by the ⁓ mutado musica orchestra. Wigwam by Bob Dylan. ⁓ I don't feel like this there's a few needle drops in this in this ⁓ soundtrack. ⁓ that's one of them that I I hadn't realized it was Bob Dylan until years later. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: And such a great song. ⁓ Wigwam. ⁓ look at that old grizzly bear by Mark Mothersbaugh. ⁓ Lullaby by Emmett Rhodes, Mothersbaugh's Canon by Mark Mothersbaugh Bob. ⁓ Police and Thieves, ⁓ great needle drop by the Clash. ⁓ yeah, great song. ⁓ Scrapping and Yelling by Mark Mothersbaugh. ⁓ Judy is a punk by the Ramones. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Jogo: Pagoda's, which a great great song by the way. ⁓ Pagoda's theme, Mark Brothersbad, Needle in the Hay by Elliott Smith. That song in that scene, holy shit. ⁓ that's the scene where Richie is unaliving himself. ⁓ that's his intention. ⁓ and like how it flicks back and forth while he's, you know, shaving and unshaven. ⁓ my god, so emotional. ⁓ and that's and that song is like it lines that up. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm. Yeah, absolutely. Jogo: so well, like every time I hear that song I think of that scene. OpticalJedi: ⁓ absolutely. Yeah, it and one of the things that's so striking to me about this album is that ⁓ it's got such a really great wonderful mix of film composer score with the mother's boss stuff, actual needle drop stuff like the Bob Dylan and the Nico, ⁓ like it's so great. And then you also have like actual like classical music mixed into it. It's such an interesting complex interweaving of different sonic styles that all still fit this whole film. Jogo: I agree. And when I think about this soundtrack, I really also think about how I don't if I ever met Wes Anderson, I don't think I could keep up with this guy. I think his his attention to detail is so intense. I'm like, holy shit dude. ⁓ OpticalJedi: ⁓ absolutely. Well you look at ⁓ all of his film compositions and the way you can study his shots and the layering of angles and colors and everything has a purpose everywhere. ⁓ it's it's so complex and interesting to see the way he he composes in film. Jogo: Yeah. Yeah, every detail is on purpose, every single thing. ⁓ down to the music, down to the set design, every single thing. let's see. So Fly by Nick Drake, another Nick Drake. Damn, that connects my two. ⁓ I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum by Mark Mothersbah. ⁓ Christmas time is here. Vince Goliardi Trio. Classic, Charlie Brown. ⁓ Stephanie says by the Velvet Underground. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Absolutely. Jogo: really good. Noodle drop there. Rachel Evans Tenenbaum 1965 to 2000 by Mark Mothersbaugh. ⁓ Sparkling Minuet by Mark Mothersbaugh. And then Ferris of the Seasons by Nico. That's a good song too. OpticalJedi: Absolutely. Jogo: damn. Again, a very sobering track. ⁓ OpticalJedi: Absolutely. Jogo: you can almost hear the air in that track. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Jogo: so those are ⁓ my two picks. ⁓ as you can tell, I'm I'm a I'm a I'm a sucker for for calm. soundtracks that I can kind of enjoy ⁓ on my drive to work or whatever. But ⁓ yeah. Do you have any other things to add to this? OpticalJedi: Yeah. Yeah, well there there were definitely a couple honorable mentions that that that I w got really close for me. ⁓ and I you know, I talk about like especially with the composers and the actual scores films, I'm a sucker for pretty much anything that Thomas Newman does. I think he is one of the true greats that we have right now. ⁓ I know the popular pick is to say something like Michael Giacchino, and I love him, don't get me wrong. I love what he does, but his his scores are not the ones that I'm just gonna put on to listen to. I'm gonna put on Thomas Newman just to listen to. And ⁓ a couple big standouts for me. ⁓ Finding Nemo. is just spectacular. Like that that score sounds like water. It sounds like you are living and moving in water. I I don't know how he did it, but it's spectacular. And the where I discovered Thomas where I was like, who is this guy? I need to know more? Shawshank Redemption. Jogo: ⁓ OpticalJedi: that is just such a stunning score. ⁓ and again with the those needle drops that aren't even his necessarily you get some classical music in in the opening sequence when you're seeing the setup for the murder. And then of course when when you got ⁓ Andy locking himself in in the in the office and putting on the opera and Jogo: same guy. ⁓ OpticalJedi: Like having that freeze of everyone in that that yard just s stop dead in their tracks, including the guards, and just stare at the speakers. And like that's such a beautiful moment. And his his music is so rich with strings that just that don't Jogo: Yeah. OpticalJedi: hit harsh, they're just warm toned strings everywhere. ⁓ I just love what he does. ⁓ so that was a really big one for me. ⁓ I mean when we talk about the ⁓ the ⁓ the ones where like got like this one kind of sideways slide of I've never seen the movie. I'm not sure I ever want to see the movie, but the soundtrack is phenomenal and that's Lost Highway. classic David Jogo: Okay. OpticalJedi: classic David Lynch film. And again, you're getting that, you know, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails. ⁓ Like it's good. Like it's such a great score. Yeah. It's just it's so great. ⁓ Jogo: Think of Marilyn Manson too, right? Yeah. OpticalJedi: and that's one of those ones where ⁓ my wife ⁓ loved the soundtrack, never seen the but she loved the soundtrack. Our daughter got it on vinyl and we listen in this probably at least once a week. ⁓ just because everyone that so much. And then my ⁓ my final poll for ⁓ a pop that really is something that hits deep and close to my heart and like I could listen to it every day anytime. this is maybe a deeper cut not a lot people know this movie but it's really the first movie to do the score cover to by one ⁓ And it's Jogo: Okay. OpticalJedi: ⁓ pop ⁓ and was ⁓ well folk music specifically Harold and Maud ⁓ with Kat every single one of those tracks is just so magical, defining the film so completely, defining a time and era and place so completely that ⁓ and and that's I mean it's from when I was born, where I was born and I feel like I listen to that and I'm I I'm right back to home. Jogo: Mm. okay. and Maud, I was I've only seen it once. I do love Cat Stevens for sure. ⁓ I d I was surprised that that movie went there. OpticalJedi: I know it's it's a hard film for a lot of people because of what it does and w the story that it's telling. Yeah, it's like some ⁓ absolutely. A lot of people struggle with that ⁓ that age split and being in a relationship. ⁓ and for me that struck as ⁓ off or odd. Like was two people that connected on a deep level and they belonged together. ⁓ unfortunately he had to Jogo: Not in a bad way, by the way. It's a com compelling film for sure. Mm. I can see that. OpticalJedi: learn the hard way what that meant. And it but it was it's such a great film. ⁓ and again that that Cat Stevens score is just chef's kiss. Jogo: ⁓ yeah. that scene that you were talking about though, actually even that whole score from like Shaw Shank Redemption, there's such a a great kind of like balance of of these amazing highs and epic sounds ⁓ of that huge sound ⁓ sounds sounding score, and then also a really delicate ⁓ side to it as well. ⁓ quiet kind of OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I I think Newman does that so beautifully. He can get those really soft, delicate moments so perfectly. Jogo: Mm-hmm. OpticalJedi: I mean, you think about like ⁓ when Brooks ⁓ goes out on ⁓ and he's in h in his in his in his halfway house ⁓ and he's in that Brooks was here before ⁓ and it's Jogo: ⁓ OpticalJedi: just ⁓ my god, that moment hits so hard. ⁓ Jogo: 'cause I think about even that one scene where Andy escapes and he's in the rain and he's like it's like pouring and he's like chang he's like ⁓ Yeah. ⁓ shit dude. So powerful. Yeah. OpticalJedi: Mm-hmm. Yeah, the we arms up in the sky and yeah. It the the timing with the lightning strikes and the whole thing is just Yeah, it's and ⁓ honestly this was a movie that came really close to making on for me for for our last discussion on quotables too, because I mean I I can't remember tell ⁓ how many times I've seen you know, like, you know, I've been known to be able to acquire things from time to time or, you know, get busy living or get busy dying and ⁓ Zi Watsaneo. Jogo: Yeah. Diane. OpticalJedi: I mean just just say Zi Watanayo, that's all you have to say. And you immediately know exactly what you're talking about. Jogo: it's always gonna it's gonna age well. It's gonna be amazing an amazing movie forever. ⁓ OpticalJedi: ⁓ absolutely. And it's it's shocking that it was not particularly successful when it came out. You know, it didn't win awards. It should have. You compare what actually won the Oscars that year against that and like sorry, no, Shoshank was the best film. Jogo: Yeah. Great picks. Great picks. so yeah, I guess that has been our episode. it's been fun, Rick. thank you for being on this one and last week's episode as well. OpticalJedi: Thank you. It was a blast. I l I love talking ⁓ movies anytime. ⁓ Jogo: did you want to do any shout outs or plugs on this one for any new listeners listeners? OpticalJedi: ⁓ well, you know, ⁓ you know, I mean ⁓ you know, last time I talked a little bit about my diabetes thing, ⁓ which I I am a huge believer in, l ⁓ I love speaking for the community. ⁓ that's how I managed to be fortunate enough to end up in a ⁓ I have to say big game spot or I'll get in trouble legally. but ⁓ Jogo: Yeah. ⁓ damn. OpticalJedi: yeah it ⁓ so I obviously that means a lot to me. The the that I'm doing right now with the ⁓ Golden State Opticians means a lot to me, ⁓ being the founding president. I love those things. ⁓ but outside of that, ⁓ the one thing I talk about too much last time that ⁓ while I have stepped away because of these other new duties I have, ⁓ you know I've been bul involved with Lighting Up dot net ⁓ for ⁓ Goodness, ⁓ twenty-five years now. ⁓ it's an organization that is explicitly the built around doing charity lineups for the Star Wars movies at the Chinese theater in Hollywood. And I'm incredibly proud of what we've done over the years. ⁓ Going back to all the way through to this most recent Mandalorian and Grogu, ⁓ they've raised over ⁓ one point two five million dollars ⁓ for Starlight Children's Foundation through lineups. Jogo: ⁓ OpticalJedi: ⁓ and it's ⁓ Jogo: That's great. OpticalJedi: It's so much fun to hang out, sleep on the sidewalk with a bunch of nerdy friends, go see a movie with the first time, like with know it's just a great experience and ⁓ I'm really proud of what they've been able to pull off over the years and proud of the little part been able to play in that. Jogo: That's great. By the way, you need to I've I think I told you this before, but you really need to meet one of my friends, ⁓ Philip. He's a mutual friend of our mutual friend, Catherine. ⁓ Cat. ⁓ shout out to Kat. What's up, Cat? But yeah, I think he should definitely meet our friend ⁓ Philip. He's he's a total Star Wars geek as well. ⁓ I say that the warmest way, the best way. OpticalJedi: Yeah. Yeah. Hey. Nice. I I I I wear it all over my body, I get ink everywhere, so like ⁓ I'm all the Star Wars. Jogo: yeah. ⁓ so thank you to our online community for taking the time to answer the questions on the best.most.pod Instagram page. You are all amazing.
