- 0:00Speaker 1: Alma, chapter forty nine. And now it came to pass
- 0:05Speaker 1: in the eleventh month of the nineteenth year, on the
- 0:07Speaker 1: tenth day of the month, the armies of the Lamanites
- 0:11Speaker 1: were seen approaching towards the land of Ammoniha. And behold,
- 0:15Speaker 1: the city had been rebuilt, and Moronai had stationed an
- 0:18Speaker 1: army by the borders of the city, And they had
- 0:21Speaker 1: cast up dirt round about to shield them from the
- 0:24Speaker 1: arrows and the stones of the Lamanites. For behold, they
- 0:27Speaker 1: fought with stones and arrows. Behold, I said that the
- 0:31Speaker 1: city of Ammaniha had been rebuilt. I say unto you, yea,
- 0:34Speaker 1: that it was in part rebuilt. And because the Lamanites
- 0:38Speaker 1: had destroyed at once because of the iniquity of the people,
- 0:41Speaker 1: they supposed that it would again become an easy prey
- 0:45Speaker 1: for them. But behold, how great was their disappointment. For behold,
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Nephites had dug up a ridge of earth round
- 0:53Speaker 1: about them, which was so high that the Lamanites could
- 0:56Speaker 1: not cast their stones and their arrows at them, that
- 0:59Speaker 1: they might effect. Neither could they come upon them, save
- 1:03Speaker 1: it was by their place of entrance. Now at this
- 1:07Speaker 1: time the chief captains of the Lamanites were astonished exceedingly
- 1:10Speaker 1: because of the wisdom of the Nephites, and preparing their
- 1:13Speaker 1: places of security. Now, the leaders of the Lamanites had supposed,
- 1:17Speaker 1: because of the greatness of their numbers. Yea, they supposed
- 1:20Speaker 1: that they should be privileged to come upon them as
- 1:23Speaker 1: they had hitherto done Yea. And they had also prepared
- 1:27Speaker 1: themselves with shields and with breastplates. And they had also
- 1:30Speaker 1: prepared themselves with garments of skins yea, very thick garments
- 1:34Speaker 1: to cover their nakedness. And being thus prepared, they supposed
- 1:38Speaker 1: that they should easily overpower and subject their brethren to
- 1:41Speaker 1: the yoke of bondage or slay and massacre them according
- 1:45Speaker 1: to their pleasure. But behold to their uttermost astonishment, they
- 1:49Speaker 1: were prepared for them in a manner which never had
- 1:52Speaker 1: been known among the children of Lehi. Now they were
- 1:55Speaker 1: prepared for the Lamanites to battle after the manner of
- 1:59Speaker 1: the instructions of Moroni. And it came to pass that
- 2:02Speaker 1: the Lamanites or the Amalachiahites, were exceedingly astonished at their
- 2:07Speaker 1: manner of preparation for war. Now, if King Amalakia had
- 2:12Speaker 1: come down out of the land of Nephi at the
- 2:14Speaker 1: head of his army. Perhaps he would have caused the
- 2:16Speaker 1: Lamanites to have attacked the Nephites at the city of Emmaniha.
- 2:20Speaker 1: For behold, he did care not for the blood of
- 2:22Speaker 1: his people. But behold, Amlachia did not come down himself
- 2:27Speaker 1: to battle, And behold, his chief captains durst not attack
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Nephites at the city of Ammaniha. For Morona had
- 2:33Speaker 1: altered the management of affairs among the Nephites insomuch that
- 2:37Speaker 1: the Lamanites were disappointed in their places of retreat, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: they could not come upon them. Therefore, they retreated into
- 2:44Speaker 1: the wilderness and took their camp, and marched towards the
- 2:47Speaker 1: land of Noah, supposing that to be the next best
- 2:50Speaker 1: place for them to come against the Nephites. For they
- 2:54Speaker 1: knew not that Morona had fortified or had built forts
- 2:57Speaker 1: of security for every city in all the life land
- 3:00Speaker 1: round about. Therefore they marched forward to the land of
- 3:04Speaker 1: Noah with a firm determination. Yea, their chief captains came
- 3:07Speaker 1: forward and took an oath that they would destroy the
- 3:10Speaker 1: people of that city. But behold, to their astonishment, the
- 3:14Speaker 1: city of Noah, which had hitherto been a weak place,
- 3:18Speaker 1: had now, by the means of Moroney, become strong, yea,
- 3:21Speaker 1: even to exceed the strength of the city Ameniha. And
- 3:25Speaker 1: now behold, this was wisdom in Morone, for he had
- 3:28Speaker 1: supposed that they would be frightened at the city Ammoniha,
- 3:31Speaker 1: And as the city of Noah had hitherto been the
- 3:33Speaker 1: weakest part of the land, therefore they would march thither
- 3:36Speaker 1: to battle. And thus it was according to his desires.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And behold, Moroni had appointed Lehigh to be chief captain
- 3:44Speaker 1: over the men of that city. And it was that
- 3:47Speaker 1: same Lehigh who fought with the Lamanites in the valley
- 3:50Speaker 1: on the east of the river Sidon. And now behold
- 3:53Speaker 1: it came to pass that when the Lamanites had found
- 3:55Speaker 1: that Lehi commanded the city, they were again disappointed, for
- 3:58Speaker 1: they feared lehigaks eceedingly. Nevertheless, their chief captains had sworn
- 4:03Speaker 1: with an oath to attack the city. Therefore they brought
- 4:06Speaker 1: up their armies. Now behold, the Lamanites could not get
- 4:11Speaker 1: into their forts of security by any other way save
- 4:14Speaker 1: by the entrance, because of the highness of the bank
- 4:16Speaker 1: which had been thrown up, and the depth of the ditch,
- 4:19Speaker 1: which had been dug round about save it were by
- 4:22Speaker 1: the entrance. And thus were the Nephites prepared to destroy
- 4:26Speaker 1: all such as should attempt to climb up to enter
- 4:29Speaker 1: the fort by any other way, by casting over stones
- 4:32Speaker 1: and arrows at them. Thus they were prepared, yea a
- 4:35Speaker 1: body of their strongest men, with their swords and their slings,
- 4:39Speaker 1: to smite down all who should attempt to come into
- 4:42Speaker 1: their place of security by the place of entrance. And
- 4:45Speaker 1: thus were they prepared to defend themselves against the Lamanites.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the captains of the
- 4:52Speaker 1: Lamanites brought up their armies before the place of entrance
- 4:56Speaker 1: and began to contend with the Nephites to get into
- 4:59Speaker 1: their place of security. But behold, they were driven back
- 5:03Speaker 1: from time to time insomuch that they were slain with
- 5:06Speaker 1: an immense slaughter. And when they found that they could
- 5:09Speaker 1: not obtain power over the Nephites by the pass, they
- 5:13Speaker 1: began to dig down their banks of earth that they
- 5:15Speaker 1: might obtain a pass to their armies, that they might
- 5:18Speaker 1: have an equal chance to fight. But behold, in these
- 5:22Speaker 1: attempts they were swept off by the stones and arrows
- 5:24Speaker 1: which were thrown at them, and instead of filling up
- 5:27Speaker 1: their ditches by pulling down the banks of earth, they
- 5:31Speaker 1: were filled up in a mesure with their dead and
- 5:33Speaker 1: wounded bodies. Thus the Nephites had all power over their enemies,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and thus the Lamanites did attempt to destroy the Nephytes
- 5:41Speaker 1: until their chief captains were all slain yea, and more
- 5:44Speaker 1: than a thousand of the Lamanites were slain, while on
- 5:47Speaker 1: the other hand, there was not a single soul of
- 5:50Speaker 1: the Nephites which was slain. There were about fifty who
- 5:54Speaker 1: were wounded, who had been exposed to the arrows of
- 5:56Speaker 1: the Lamanites through the pass, but they were shielded by
- 5:59Speaker 1: their ship fields and their breastplates and their head plates,
- 6:02Speaker 1: insomuch that their wounds were upon their legs, many of
- 6:05Speaker 1: which were very severe. And it came to pass that
- 6:09Speaker 1: when the Lamanites saw that their chief captains were all slain,
- 6:12Speaker 1: they fled into the wilderness, and it came to pass
- 6:15Speaker 1: that they returned to the land of Nephi to inform
- 6:18Speaker 1: their king Malachia, who was a Nephite by birth, concerning
- 6:22Speaker 1: their great loss. And it came to pass that he
- 6:25Speaker 1: was exceedingly angry with his people, because he had not
- 6:28Speaker 1: obtained his desire over the Nephites, he had not subjected
- 6:31Speaker 1: them to the yoke of bondage. Yea, he was exceedingly wroth,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and he did curse God, and also Moroni, swearing with
- 6:38Speaker 1: an oath that he would drink his blood. And this
- 6:41Speaker 1: because Moroni had kept the commandments of God in preparing
- 6:44Speaker 1: for the safety of his people. And it came to
- 6:48Speaker 1: pass that, on the other hand, the people of Nephi
- 6:50Speaker 1: did thank the Lord their God, because of his matchless
- 6:53Speaker 1: power in delivering them from the hands of their enemies.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And thus under the nineteenth year of the reign of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Judges over the people of Nephi Yea, and there
- 7:03Speaker 1: was continual peace among them, and exceeding the great prosperity
- 7:06Speaker 1: in the Church, because of their heed and diligence which
- 7:09Speaker 1: they gave unto the word of God, which was declared
- 7:12Speaker 1: unto them by Heliman and Shiblon and Coriantin and Ammon
- 7:17Speaker 1: and his brethren Yea, and by all those who had
- 7:20Speaker 1: been ordained by the Holy Order of God being baptized
- 7:23Speaker 1: unto repentance and sent forth to preach among the people Elma,
- 7:30Speaker 1: chapter fifty. And now it came to pass that Moroni
- 7:33Speaker 1: did not stop making preparations for war or to defend
- 7:36Speaker 1: his people against the Lamanites. For he caused that his
- 7:39Speaker 1: armies should commence, in the commencement of the twentieth year
- 7:43Speaker 1: of the reign of the Judges, that they should commence
- 7:45Speaker 1: in digging up heaps of earth round about all the cities,
- 7:48Speaker 1: throughout all the land which was possessed by the Nephites.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And upon the top of these ridges of earth, he
- 7:54Speaker 1: caused that there should be timbers, yea works of timbers
- 7:57Speaker 1: built up to the height of a man, round about
- 8:00Speaker 1: the cities. And he caused that upon those works of
- 8:03Speaker 1: timbers there should be a frame of pickets built upon
- 8:06Speaker 1: the timbers round about, and they were strong and high.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And he caused towers to be erected that overlooked those
- 8:13Speaker 1: works of pickets, and he caused places of security to
- 8:16Speaker 1: be built upon those towers, that the stones and the
- 8:20Speaker 1: arrows of the Lamanites could not hurt them. And they
- 8:22Speaker 1: were prepared that they could cast stones from the top
- 8:25Speaker 1: thereof according to their pleasure and their strength, and slay
- 8:28Speaker 1: him who should attempt to approach near the walls of
- 8:31Speaker 1: the city. Thus Moroni did prepare strongholds against the coming
- 8:36Speaker 1: of their enemies round about every city and all the land.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Morone caused that his
- 8:42Speaker 1: armies should go forth into the east wilderness Yea, And
- 8:45Speaker 1: they went forth and drove all the Lamanites who were
- 8:47Speaker 1: in the east wilderness into their own lands, which were
- 8:50Speaker 1: south of the land Zarahemla and the land of Nephi
- 8:54Speaker 1: did run in a straight course from the east sea
- 8:57Speaker 1: to the west. And it came to pass that when
- 8:59Speaker 1: were Rona had driven all the Lamanites out of the
- 9:01Speaker 1: East wilderness, which was north of the lands of their
- 9:04Speaker 1: own possessions, he caused that the inhabitants who were in
- 9:08Speaker 1: the land of Sarahemla and in the land roundabout, should
- 9:10Speaker 1: go forth into the east wilderness, even to the borders
- 9:13Speaker 1: by the seashore, and possess the land. And he also
- 9:17Speaker 1: placed armies on the south in the borders of their possessions,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and caused them to erect fortifications, that they might secure
- 9:23Speaker 1: their armies and their people from the hands of their enemies.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And thus he cut off all the strongholds of the
- 9:30Speaker 1: Lamanites in the east wilderness Yea, and also on the west,
- 9:34Speaker 1: fortifying the line between the Nephites and the Lamanites between
- 9:37Speaker 1: the land of Sarahemla and the land of Nephi from
- 9:40Speaker 1: the west sea, running by the head of the river Sidon,
- 9:44Speaker 1: the Nephites possessing all the land northward Yea, even all
- 9:47Speaker 1: the land which was northward of the land bountiful, according
- 9:51Speaker 1: to their pleasure. Thus Morona, with his armies, which did
- 9:55Speaker 1: increase daily because of the assurance of protection which his
- 9:58Speaker 1: works did bring forth unto them, did seek to cut
- 10:00Speaker 1: off the strength and the power of the Lamanites from
- 10:03Speaker 1: off the lands of their possessions, that they should have
- 10:05Speaker 1: no power upon the lands of their possession. And it
- 10:09Speaker 1: came to pass that the Nephites began the foundation of
- 10:12Speaker 1: a city, and they called the name of the city Moroni.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And it was by the east sea, and it was
- 10:18Speaker 1: on the south by the line of the possessions of
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Lamanites. And they also began a foundation for a
- 10:24Speaker 1: city between the city of Moroni and the city of Erin,
- 10:27Speaker 1: joining the borders of Erin and Moroni. And they called
- 10:30Speaker 1: the name of the city or the land Nephiha and
- 10:35Speaker 1: they also began in that same year to build many
- 10:37Speaker 1: cities on the north, one in a particular manner, which
- 10:41Speaker 1: they called Lehi, which was in the north by the
- 10:43Speaker 1: borders of the seashore. And thus end of the twentieth year,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and in these prosperous circumstances were the people of Nephi
- 10:51Speaker 1: and the commencement of the twenty and first year of
- 10:53Speaker 1: the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And they did prosper exceedingly, and they became exceed eadingly rich, Yea,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and they did multiply and wax strong in the land.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And thus we see how merciful and just are all
- 11:08Speaker 1: the dealings of the Lord, to the fulfilling of all
- 11:10Speaker 1: his words unto the children of men, Yea, we can
- 11:14Speaker 1: behold that his words are verified, even at this time
- 11:17Speaker 1: which he spake unto Lehi, saying, blessed art thou and
- 11:21Speaker 1: thy children. And they shall be blessed inasmuch as they
- 11:24Speaker 1: shall keep my commandments, they shall prosper in the land.
- 11:28Speaker 1: But remember, inasmuch as they will not keep my commandments,
- 11:31Speaker 1: they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And we see that these promises have been verified to
- 11:38Speaker 1: the people of Nephi. For it has been their quarrelings
- 11:41Speaker 1: and their contentions Yea, their murderings and their plunderings, their idolatry,
- 11:46Speaker 1: their hortoms, and their abominations which were among themselves, which
- 11:50Speaker 1: brought upon them their wars and their destructions. And those
- 11:54Speaker 1: who were faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord
- 11:56Speaker 1: were delivered at all times, whilst thousands of their wicked
- 11:59Speaker 1: breath and have been consigned to bondage, or to perish
- 12:03Speaker 1: by the sword, or to dwindle an unbelief, and to
- 12:05Speaker 1: mingle with the Lamanites. But behold, there never was a
- 12:10Speaker 1: happier time among the people of Nephi since the days
- 12:13Speaker 1: of Nephi than in the days of Moronai Yea, even
- 12:16Speaker 1: at this time in the twenty and first year of
- 12:19Speaker 1: the reign of the Judges, and it came to pass
- 12:22Speaker 1: that the twenty and second year of the reign of
- 12:24Speaker 1: the Judges also ended in peace Yea, and also the
- 12:27Speaker 1: twenty and third year, And it came to pass that
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the commencement of the twenty and fourth year of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the reign of the Judges, there would also have been
- 12:35Speaker 1: peace among the people of Nephi, had it not been
- 12:38Speaker 1: for a contention which took place among them concerning the
- 12:41Speaker 1: land of Lehi and the land of Morientin, which joined
- 12:45Speaker 1: upon the borders of Lehigh, both of which were on
- 12:49Speaker 1: the borders by the seashore. For behold, the people who
- 12:52Speaker 1: possessed the land of Oriantin did claim a part of
- 12:54Speaker 1: the land of Lehi. Therefore there began to be a
- 12:57Speaker 1: warm contention between them, in so much that the people
- 13:00Speaker 1: of Moriantin took up arms against their brethren, and they
- 13:04Speaker 1: were determined by the sword to slay them. But behold,
- 13:07Speaker 1: the people who possessed the land of Lehi fled to
- 13:11Speaker 1: the camp of Morone and appealed unto him for assistance.
- 13:14Speaker 1: For behold, they were not in the wrong. And it
- 13:17Speaker 1: came to pass that when the people of Morianton, who
- 13:20Speaker 1: were led by a man whose name was Moriantin, found
- 13:23Speaker 1: that the people of Lehi had fled to the camp
- 13:25Speaker 1: of Moroni, they were exceedingly fearful lest the army of
- 13:29Speaker 1: Moroni should come upon them and destroy them. Therefore, Morianton
- 13:33Speaker 1: put it into their hearts that they should flee to
- 13:36Speaker 1: the land which was northward, which was covered with large
- 13:39Speaker 1: bodies of water, and take possession of the land which
- 13:41Speaker 1: was northward. And behold, they would have carried this plan
- 13:45Speaker 1: into effect, which would have been a cause to have
- 13:48Speaker 1: been lamented. But behold, Morianton, being a man of much passion. Therefore,
- 13:54Speaker 1: he was angry with one of his maid serpents, and
- 13:56Speaker 1: he fell upon her and beat her much, And it
- 13:59Speaker 1: came to that she fled and came over to the
- 14:02Speaker 1: camp of Moroni, and told Moroni all things concerning the matter,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and also concerning their intentions to flee into the land northward.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Now behold the people who were in the land bountiful,
- 14:14Speaker 1: or rather, Moroni feared that they would hearken to the
- 14:17Speaker 1: words of Moriantin and unite with his people, and thus
- 14:21Speaker 1: he would obtain possession of those parts of the land,
- 14:24Speaker 1: which would lay a foundation for serious consequences among the
- 14:27Speaker 1: people of nephi Yea, which consequences would lead to the
- 14:31Speaker 1: overthrow of their liberty. Therefore, Moronay sent an army with
- 14:35Speaker 1: their camp to head the people of Moriantin to stop
- 14:39Speaker 1: their flight into the land northward. And it came to
- 14:42Speaker 1: pass that they did not head them until they had
- 14:44Speaker 1: come to the borders of the land Desolation, and there
- 14:48Speaker 1: they did head them by the narrow pass which led
- 14:51Speaker 1: by the sea into the land northward Yea by the
- 14:54Speaker 1: sea on the west and on the east. And it
- 14:56Speaker 1: came to pass that the army which was sent by Moroni,
- 15:00Speaker 1: which was led by a man whose name was Tiankam,
- 15:02Speaker 1: did meet the people of Morientin. And so stubborn were
- 15:06Speaker 1: the people of Morientin, being inspired by his wickedness and
- 15:10Speaker 1: his flattering words, that a battle commenced between them, in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the which Tiancum did slay Moriantin and defeat his army,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and took them prisoners, and returned to the camp of Moronai.
- 15:22Speaker 1: And thus ended the twenty and fourth year of the
- 15:25Speaker 1: reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. And
- 15:28Speaker 1: thus were the people of Moriantin brought back, and upon
- 15:31Speaker 1: their covenanting to keep the peace, they were restored to
- 15:34Speaker 1: the land of Morientin, and a union took place between
- 15:38Speaker 1: them and the people of Lehi, and they were also
- 15:41Speaker 1: restored to their lands. And it came to pass that
- 15:44Speaker 1: in the same year that the people of Nephi had
- 15:47Speaker 1: peace restored unto them, that Nephaiha, the second Chief judge died,
- 15:52Speaker 1: having filled the judgment seat with perfect uprightness before God. Nevertheless,
- 15:58Speaker 1: he had refused Alma to take the bozzession of those
- 16:00Speaker 1: records and those things which were esteemed by Alma and
- 16:03Speaker 1: his fathers to be most sacred. Therefore Almah had conferred
- 16:06Speaker 1: them upon his son Heliman. Behold, it came to pass
- 16:10Speaker 1: that the son of Nephiha was appointed to feel the
- 16:13Speaker 1: judgment seat in the stead of his father Yea. He
- 16:17Speaker 1: was appointed chief judge and governor over the people, with
- 16:20Speaker 1: an oath and sacred ordinance to judge righteously and to
- 16:24Speaker 1: keep the peace and the freedom of the people, and
- 16:27Speaker 1: to grant to them their sacred privileges to worship the
- 16:30Speaker 1: Lord their God Yea, to support and maintain the cause
- 16:34Speaker 1: of God all his days, and to bring the wicked
- 16:37Speaker 1: to justice according to their crime. Now behold, his name
- 16:41Speaker 1: was Peihoran, and Pehoran did filled the seat of his father,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and did commence his reign in the end of the
- 16:48Speaker 1: twenty and fourth year over the people of nephi Alma,
- 16:54Speaker 1: Chapter fifty one. And now it came to pass in
- 16:57Speaker 1: the commencement of the twenty and fifth year of the
- 16:59Speaker 1: reign of the judges over the people of Nephi. They
- 17:02Speaker 1: have an established peace between the people of Lehi and
- 17:05Speaker 1: the people of Morienton concerning their laws, and having commenced
- 17:09Speaker 1: the twenty and fifth year in peace. Nevertheless, they did
- 17:13Speaker 1: not long maintain an entire peace in the land, for
- 17:16Speaker 1: there began to be a contention among the people concerning
- 17:19Speaker 1: the Chief Judge Pihoran. For behold, there were a part
- 17:23Speaker 1: of the people who desired that a few particular points
- 17:26Speaker 1: of the law should be altered. But behold, Peihoran would
- 17:29Speaker 1: not alter nor suffer the law to be altered. Therefore
- 17:33Speaker 1: he did not hearken to those who had sent in
- 17:35Speaker 1: their voices with their petitions concerning the altering of the law. Therefore,
- 17:40Speaker 1: those who were desirous that the law should be altered
- 17:44Speaker 1: were angry with him and desired that he should no
- 17:47Speaker 1: longer be chief judge over the land. Therefore, there arose
- 17:50Speaker 1: a warm dispute concerning the matter, but not unto bloodshed.
- 17:55Speaker 1: And it came to pass that those who were desirous
- 17:57Speaker 1: that Pehoran should be dethroned from the judgeudgment seat were
- 18:01Speaker 1: called king men, for they were desirous that the law
- 18:04Speaker 1: should be altered in a manner to overthrow the free
- 18:06Speaker 1: government and to establish a king over the land. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: those who were desirous that Peihoran should remain chief judge
- 18:13Speaker 1: over the land took upon them the name of freemen,
- 18:16Speaker 1: and thus was the division among them. For the freemen
- 18:19Speaker 1: had sworn or covenanted to maintain their rights and the
- 18:23Speaker 1: privileges of their religion by a free government. And it
- 18:27Speaker 1: came to pass that this matter of their contention was
- 18:29Speaker 1: settled by the voice of the people. And it came
- 18:32Speaker 1: to pass that the voice of the people came in
- 18:34Speaker 1: favor of the freemen, and Peihoran retained the judgment seat,
- 18:38Speaker 1: which caused much rejoicing among the brethren of Pehoran, and
- 18:41Speaker 1: also many of the people of liberty, who also put
- 18:44Speaker 1: the king men to silence, that they durst not oppose,
- 18:48Speaker 1: but were obliged to maintain the cause of freedom. Now,
- 18:51Speaker 1: those who were in favor of kings were those of
- 18:54Speaker 1: high birth, and they sought to be kings, and they
- 18:57Speaker 1: were supported by those who sought power and authority over
- 19:00Speaker 1: the people. But behold, this was a critical time for
- 19:03Speaker 1: such contentions to be among the people of Nephi. For behold,
- 19:07Speaker 1: a Malachia had again stirred up the hearts of the
- 19:10Speaker 1: people of the Lamanites against the people of the Nephites.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And he was gathering together soldiers from all parts of
- 19:16Speaker 1: his land and arming them, and preparing for war with
- 19:20Speaker 1: all diligence. For he had sworn to drink the blood
- 19:23Speaker 1: of Moroni. But behold, we shall see that his promise
- 19:27Speaker 1: which he made was rash. Nevertheless, he did prepare himself
- 19:31Speaker 1: and his armies to come to battle against the Nephites.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Now his armies were not so great as they had
- 19:38Speaker 1: hitherto been, because of the many thousands who had been
- 19:40Speaker 1: slain by the hand of the Nephites. But notwithstanding their
- 19:44Speaker 1: great loss, A Malachiya had gathered together a wonderfully great army,
- 19:48Speaker 1: in so much that he feared not to come down
- 19:51Speaker 1: to the land of Zarahemla. Yea, even a Malachia did
- 19:54Speaker 1: himself come down at the head of the Lamanites. And
- 19:57Speaker 1: it was in the twenty and fifth year of the
- 19:59Speaker 1: reign of the Judges, And it was at the same
- 20:02Speaker 1: time that they had begun to settle the affairs of
- 20:05Speaker 1: their contentions concerning the chief judge Pehorn and it came
- 20:09Speaker 1: to pass that when the men who were called king
- 20:11Speaker 1: men had heard that the Lamanites were coming down to
- 20:14Speaker 1: battle against them, they were glad in their hearts, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: they refused to take up arms, for they were so
- 20:20Speaker 1: wroth with the chief judge and also with the people
- 20:23Speaker 1: of liberty, that they would not take up arms to
- 20:25Speaker 1: defend their country. And it came to pass that when
- 20:29Speaker 1: Moroni saw this, and also saw that the Lamanites were
- 20:32Speaker 1: coming into the borders of the land, he was exceedingly wroth.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Because of the stubbornness of those people whom he had
- 20:39Speaker 1: labored with so much diligence to preserve Yea. He was
- 20:42Speaker 1: exceedingly wroth. His soul was filled with anger against them.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he sent a petition
- 20:48Speaker 1: with the voice of the people unto the governor of
- 20:51Speaker 1: the land, desiring that he should read it and give
- 20:55Speaker 1: him Moroni power to compel those dissenters to defend their
- 20:58Speaker 1: country or to put them to death, For it was
- 21:02Speaker 1: his first care to put an end to such contentions
- 21:05Speaker 1: and dissensions among the people, For behold, this had been
- 21:08Speaker 1: hitherto a cause of all their destruction. And it came
- 21:11Speaker 1: to pass that it was granted according to the voice
- 21:14Speaker 1: of the people. And it came to pass that Moroni
- 21:17Speaker 1: commanded that his army should go against those king men,
- 21:20Speaker 1: to pull down their pride and their nobility and level
- 21:23Speaker 1: them with the earth, or they should take up arms
- 21:26Speaker 1: and support the cause of liberty. And it came to
- 21:29Speaker 1: pass that the armies did march forth against them, and
- 21:32Speaker 1: they did pull down their pride and their nobility, insomuch
- 21:36Speaker 1: that as they did lift their weapons of war to
- 21:38Speaker 1: fight against the men of Moroni, they were hewn down
- 21:41Speaker 1: and leveled to the earth. And it came to pass
- 21:44Speaker 1: that there were four thousand of those dissenters who were
- 21:47Speaker 1: hewn down by the sword, and those of their leaders
- 21:50Speaker 1: who were not slain in battle were taken and cast
- 21:52Speaker 1: into prison, for there was no time for their trials
- 21:55Speaker 1: at this period. And the remainder of those dissenters, rather
- 21:59Speaker 1: than be smitten down to the earth by the sword,
- 22:02Speaker 1: yielded to the standard of liberty and were compelled to
- 22:05Speaker 1: hoist the title of liberty upon their towers and in
- 22:08Speaker 1: their cities, and to take up arms in defense of
- 22:10Speaker 1: their country. And thus Maroni put an end to those
- 22:14Speaker 1: kingmen that there were not any known by the appellation
- 22:17Speaker 1: of king men. And thus he put an end to
- 22:20Speaker 1: the stubbornness and the pride of those people who professed
- 22:23Speaker 1: the blood of nobility. But they were brought down to
- 22:26Speaker 1: humble themselves, liken to their brethren, and to fight valiantly
- 22:30Speaker 1: for their freedom from bondage. Behold, it came to pass
- 22:35Speaker 1: that while Morona was thus breaking down the wars and
- 22:37Speaker 1: contentions among his own people and subjecting them to peace
- 22:42Speaker 1: and civilization, and making regulations to prepare for war against
- 22:46Speaker 1: the Lamanites. Behold, the Lamanites had come into the land Moroni,
- 22:51Speaker 1: which was in the borders by the seashore, and it
- 22:54Speaker 1: came to pass that the Nephites were not sufficiently strong
- 22:57Speaker 1: in the city of Moroni. Therefore Amalachaia did drive them,
- 23:02Speaker 1: slaying many. And it came to pass that a Malachia
- 23:05Speaker 1: took possession of the city Yea a possession of all
- 23:08Speaker 1: their fortifications. And those who fled out of the city
- 23:11Speaker 1: of Moronai came to the city of Nephaiha. And also
- 23:15Speaker 1: the people of the city of Lehi gathered themselves together
- 23:18Speaker 1: and made preparations and were ready to receive the Lamanites
- 23:21Speaker 1: to battle. But it came to pass that Amalachiya would
- 23:24Speaker 1: not suffer the Lamanites to go against the city of
- 23:26Speaker 1: Nephaiha to battle, but kept them down by the sea shore,
- 23:30Speaker 1: leaving men in every city to maintain and defend it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And thus he went on, taking possession of many cities,
- 23:37Speaker 1: the city of Nephaiha, and the city of Lehigh, and
- 23:40Speaker 1: the city of Morianton, and the city of Omner, and
- 23:43Speaker 1: the city of Ghid, and the city of Mulik, all
- 23:45Speaker 1: of which were on the east borders by the sea shore.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And thus had the Lamanites obtained by the cunning of Malachia,
- 23:52Speaker 1: so many cities by their numberless hosts, all of which
- 23:56Speaker 1: were strongly fortified after the manner of the fortifications of Moroni,
- 24:00Speaker 1: all of which afforded strongholds for the Lamanites. And it
- 24:04Speaker 1: came to pass that they marched through the borders of
- 24:06Speaker 1: the land bountiful, driving the Nephites before them and slaying many.
- 24:12Speaker 1: But it came to pass that they were met by Tiancum,
- 24:15Speaker 1: who had slain Morianton and had headed his people in
- 24:19Speaker 1: his flight, And it came to pass that he headed
- 24:22Speaker 1: Amalakia also as he was marching forth with his numerous army,
- 24:26Speaker 1: that he might take possession of the land bountiful, and
- 24:29Speaker 1: also the land northward. But behold, he met with a
- 24:32Speaker 1: disappointment by being repulsed by Tiankam and his men. For
- 24:36Speaker 1: they were great warriors. For every man of Tiancum did
- 24:38Speaker 1: exceed the Lamanites in their strength and in their skill
- 24:42Speaker 1: of war, insomuch that they did gain advantage over the Lamanites.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they did harass them,
- 24:48Speaker 1: insomuch that they did slay them even until it was dark.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Tiankum and his men
- 24:54Speaker 1: did pitch their tents in the borders of the land Bountiful,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and Malakia did pitch his tents in the borders on
- 25:01Speaker 1: the beach by the sea shore. And after this manner
- 25:03Speaker 1: were they driven. And it came to pass that when
- 25:07Speaker 1: the knight had come, Tiancum and his servant stole forth
- 25:12Speaker 1: and went out by night and went into the camp
- 25:14Speaker 1: of a Malachia. And behold, sleep had overpowered them because
- 25:19Speaker 1: of their much fatigue, which was caused by the labors
- 25:21Speaker 1: and heat of the day. And it came to pass
- 25:24Speaker 1: that Tiancum stole privily into the tent of the king
- 25:28Speaker 1: and put a javelin to his heart, and he did
- 25:31Speaker 1: cause the death of the king immediately that he did
- 25:35Speaker 1: not awake his servants. And he returned again privily to
- 25:39Speaker 1: his own camp. And behold, his men were asleep, and
- 25:42Speaker 1: he awoke them and told them all the things which
- 25:45Speaker 1: he had done. And he caused that his armies should
- 25:48Speaker 1: stand in readiness lest the Lamanites had awakened and should
- 25:52Speaker 1: come upon them. And thus ended the twenty and fifth
- 25:55Speaker 1: year of the reign of the Judges over the people
- 25:57Speaker 1: of Nephi. And thus endeth the days of a Malachiah
- 26:02Speaker 1: and of Alma, chapters forty nine through fifty one.
