- 0:27Speaker 1: The Lady of the Lake. There are so many different
- 0:31Speaker 1: tales and stories surrounding such a title. Ghost stories, cryptids,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and the occasional heartwarming stories are thrown in there just
- 0:41Speaker 1: for good measure. But a happy ending tale is not
- 0:46Speaker 1: what you're here for, is it?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Of course?
- 0:50Speaker 1: Not what else would you expect from a show with
- 0:53Speaker 1: a name wicked and grim. In today's case, The Lake
- 1:00Speaker 1: Lady of the Lake is very much so a true story.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It is one of the disappearance of Haley Illingsworth. It
- 1:09Speaker 1: is a tale of murder, heartbreak, covering one's own tracks
- 1:15Speaker 1: and sadness. But if you do like true crime, this
- 1:21Speaker 1: will be right up your alley.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:26Speaker 1: All that on its own is not what makes this
- 1:29Speaker 1: story worth telling for the third annual Halloween Week No no,
- 1:33Speaker 1: no for you. See, when Haley's body was finally turned
- 1:38Speaker 1: up in the cold waters of a lake, a very
- 1:42Speaker 1: interesting thing had happened to her corpse over time, which
- 1:47Speaker 1: left her almost not decomposed at all despite the year's passing.
- 1:56Speaker 1: The results left are a story for the ages, one
- 2:01Speaker 1: that will certainly transcend time into legend. Now, though without
- 2:07Speaker 1: further ado, ladies, gentlemen, theys and damns, my name is Jacko,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and I am your master of ceremonies. It is my
- 2:17Speaker 1: absolute pleasure to hand you off to your host Ben
- 2:22Speaker 1: and Nicole of Wicked and Grim to tell you the
- 2:26Speaker 1: story of Lake Crescents, Lady of the Lake.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Day three of the third annual Halloween week. Here we are.
- 2:39Speaker 3: How's it going, Thanks Jacko for the intro. You're awesome
- 2:41Speaker 3: as always.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, day three already we're just flying.
- 2:45Speaker 3: By, flying through it, and that means Halloween's all that closer.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, which is exciting.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So I'm curious, do you guys have your Halloween costumes
- 2:53Speaker 3: picked out yet? Because you're running out of time, So
- 2:56Speaker 3: I'm here's your warning. A few jeez, we'll stop by
- 3:01Speaker 3: after work somewhere get what you got to get. Hopefully
- 3:04Speaker 3: that Amazon package arrives in time. I wouldn't rely on
- 3:06Speaker 3: Amazon at this point.
- 3:07Speaker 2: No, personally, they've let us down lately. Actually they have.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But we have a few things to grab too.
- 3:13Speaker 3: We do I need a wig? That's all he's gonna say,
- 3:16Speaker 3: is I need Okay, Okay, it's all good.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I was like, you're not supposed to say what we're
- 3:21Speaker 2: going to be. That's for Instagram Live.
- 3:23Speaker 3: To touche tooche. If you want to see what we're
- 3:25Speaker 3: actually going to be, you have to catch up on
- 3:26Speaker 3: the socials. But I do need a wig to finish
- 3:30Speaker 3: my ensemble, if you will. And I think yours is complete,
- 3:35Speaker 3: does it not?
- 3:36Speaker 2: I might need one more piece, gotcha?
- 3:39Speaker 3: Gotcha? I saw what you did there. I know what
- 3:42Speaker 3: you're talking about. Y'all. Good, y'all good, Okay, So I
- 3:47Speaker 3: have I have a confession to make. What's that you
- 3:51Speaker 3: have not been following my itinerary for Halloween week at
- 3:56Speaker 3: all yet?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well, I mean I haven't.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I have been, but I haven't.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well the case is that you have thought you were
- 4:01Speaker 2: going to be doing exactly.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah, So I planned out like the cases for Halloween week,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and it's like the day rolls around where it's like
- 4:08Speaker 3: it's going to be like I'm researching today's case, and
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'm like, it just doesn't feel right. So I go
- 4:15Speaker 3: find something else and I'm like, ooh, this is better.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And so that's what I've been doing.
- 4:19Speaker 2: That's so interesting, but I loving't it. Yeah, hopefully that
- 4:23Speaker 2: doesn't happen to me because I announced which when I
- 4:26Speaker 2: was doing for Patreon.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah you fucked now. So yeah, stuck with it.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Well, I feel like they might forgive me. I also
- 4:33Speaker 2: have to say I just have to do a side
- 4:36Speaker 2: note here because we posted our photo shoot photos we
- 4:40Speaker 2: did on Instagram and Facebook, and I would not kill
- 4:45Speaker 2: Ben that quickly. I wouldn't, Okay, it was just for
- 4:49Speaker 2: it was for.
- 4:50Speaker 3: The photo shoot. And also I mean, like, if you
- 4:53Speaker 3: look at the photos, like, because if you haven't seen it,
- 4:56Speaker 3: we're having a picnic, zombie comes up, bites me. I
- 4:59Speaker 3: kill it. I turned into a zombie. Nicole needs to
- 5:01Speaker 3: kill me. If you look at the photos, I turn quick.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Real quick. And yeah, there's been some comments about that,
- 5:06Speaker 2: which is funny.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Well, I mean some zombie movies A zombies turn real fast,
- 5:10Speaker 3: do they? Oh yeah, there's even one zombie movie. I
- 5:13Speaker 3: want to say it's twenty eight days later. I could
- 5:15Speaker 3: be wrong, but there's a dude who gets a he's
- 5:18Speaker 3: looking up at it like a structure, and there's a
- 5:21Speaker 3: body hanging up there, and a drop of blood falls
- 5:24Speaker 3: in his eye and he turns from that and like
- 5:27Speaker 3: in seconds.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Really, yes, holy shit, that's terrifying.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah, because the virus got into his bloodstream via that transmission. Right,
- 5:36Speaker 3: So but yeah, telling a story in ten photos on
- 5:41Speaker 3: Instagram is a little difficult. So Facebook had it better.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Facebook has it better. They got more photos to tell
- 5:47Speaker 3: the in between a little bit more.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Well. The only I love all the photos. The only
- 5:51Speaker 2: thing that I that was not my idea that I
- 5:53Speaker 2: was like, this makes me look like a cold bit
- 5:55Speaker 2: is the fact that I was supposed to take a
- 5:58Speaker 2: sip of wine after.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And walk away like a bad assal So.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Walking away with the wine bottle was okay, but the
- 6:04Speaker 2: actual like after I just like killed you, like taking
- 6:07Speaker 2: a sip. I had wanted to put like a rose
- 6:11Speaker 2: or something on your chest so I didn't look like
- 6:13Speaker 2: such a bouch, but that didn't happen.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It was a little cheesy. I thought, if you just
- 6:17Speaker 3: have a sweach, like you just went through some trauma,
- 6:20Speaker 3: so you're numbing your pain and you're off to take
- 6:22Speaker 3: on the apocalypse.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Oh shit, that would be that would be terrifying.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be wow.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Like just just now, for some reason, I actually put
- 6:33Speaker 2: myself in those shoes. I didn't do that at the shoot,
- 6:36Speaker 2: but now I'm like.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Shit, yeah, I think we're gonna have to go to
- 6:38Speaker 3: Patreon and actually start talking to people their their apocalypse plans. Yeah,
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm curious.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do it.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But we we've been rambling a little bit about apocalypse
- 6:47Speaker 3: stuff and we should probably get to the case.
- 6:50Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Well, as Jacko so aptly said, this is
- 6:55Speaker 3: the Lake Crescents, Lady of the Lake. And I have
- 6:59Speaker 3: heard men of tails regarding Lady of the lake, this
- 7:02Speaker 3: Lady of the Lake. That there's many Ladies of the lake,
- 7:06Speaker 3: many of them being ghost stories and stuff. But this
- 7:08Speaker 3: one is not a ghost story. It is a true
- 7:11Speaker 3: crime case.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Wow.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So it happened in the hazy summer of nineteen forty,
- 7:19Speaker 3: so we're going back in time just a little bit.
- 7:22Speaker 3: It was on the tranquil surface of Lake Crescent in
- 7:25Speaker 3: Olympic National Park. Now this area bor witness to the
- 7:29Speaker 3: whole eerie event, and it would send shivers down the
- 7:32Speaker 3: spines of basically the entire community living in the area,
- 7:35Speaker 3: and I mean rightfully so. So a blanket swathed bundle
- 7:40Speaker 3: emerged floating on the water from the depths of the lake, prompting,
- 7:44Speaker 3: of course, authorities to be called and launching an investigation.
- 7:49Speaker 3: So they meticulously unraveled the layers of this bundled up
- 7:53Speaker 3: bunch of blankets that was bound with rope, only to
- 7:57Speaker 3: reveal the lifeless body of a woman. So what made
- 8:03Speaker 3: this grim discovery even more chilling was the preservation of
- 8:07Speaker 3: the body, despite the brutality that was clearly inflicted upon
- 8:11Speaker 3: her body from obvious strangulation marks and trauma. For example,
- 8:16Speaker 3: she had defied the natural course of decay. She was
- 8:20Speaker 3: clearly in the water for her while for a while,
- 8:22Speaker 3: and her skin which was void of facial features and
- 8:25Speaker 3: fingertips because those had rotted away. She'd gone under an
- 8:30Speaker 3: uncanny transformation.
- 8:32Speaker 2: If you will, because just wait side note here. Yes,
- 8:35Speaker 2: because be a body in water does not tend to
- 8:38Speaker 2: speed up the decay.
- 8:39Speaker 3: It speeds up the decay process. Yes, Okay, So in
- 8:42Speaker 3: this case, the body was certainly in the water for
- 8:45Speaker 3: a very long time, and we will touch on how
- 8:49Speaker 3: long later, But she did not decay. In fact, she
- 8:54Speaker 3: was preserved wow, which again we'll touch on later.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Okay, I have thought, but let's we'll touch on it later.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Well, go ahead with your thought, because I haven't even
- 9:04Speaker 3: finished talking here, and your thoughts probably going to change
- 9:06Speaker 3: my next sentence.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Oh well, now I don't want to say it, but
- 9:09Speaker 2: I was like maybe it's something within that water of
- 9:12Speaker 2: the lake that's preserving her, is my thought.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Well, I mean technically yes, but there's a whole chain
- 9:19Speaker 3: of events though, ass to it.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Let's hear it.
- 9:22Speaker 3: So, this whole transformation turned her skin basically into like
- 9:28Speaker 3: a substance akin to soap. Really, yeah, it was a
- 9:33Speaker 3: very macab phenomenon that is known as sap on effication.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I'm saying that slow so you can hear it. Oh,
- 9:39Speaker 3: sap on afication.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I've never heard of that.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Okay, Now, this unsettling phenomenon occurs when fatty acids within
- 9:47Speaker 3: the body react to the cold alkaline waters, creating a
- 9:51Speaker 3: ghastly transformation. The results left her once nice, soft textured
- 9:56Speaker 3: skin to be replaced with a grotesque form where the
- 10:00Speaker 3: skin could be quote scooped away like putty.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Wow. Really yes, Oh okay, I really wanted.
- 10:10Speaker 3: To put that term in there too, scooped away like putty,
- 10:13Speaker 3: because that is a whole ass visual And I primarily
- 10:18Speaker 3: picked this one for Halloween week because of.
- 10:21Speaker 2: That, right, because of the scoop like puddy.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Could you imagine like just like I can picture touching
- 10:28Speaker 3: someone's face and just like your fingers sink in just
- 10:31Speaker 3: like you're just like like it's like a putty and
- 10:33Speaker 3: you can just like grab pieces off like a handful
- 10:37Speaker 3: of flood. Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's not okay, that's.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Not okay, Okay, No, it was. It was a horror
- 10:46Speaker 3: that basically defied explanation at the time, like how or
- 10:50Speaker 3: why this happened basically just baffled everybody. Now the lake itself,
- 10:57Speaker 3: Lake Crescent. Normally it's known for its serene pa but
- 11:00Speaker 3: it does have a bit of a darker reputation beneath
- 11:04Speaker 3: its waters. Now, there are some legends behind the lake,
- 11:08Speaker 3: which I'm going to touch on here. And these legends
- 11:10Speaker 3: talk about ancient battles between I'm probably gonna butcher the
- 11:14Speaker 3: names here, but I'm going to do my best Klalam
- 11:17Speaker 3: and Quilouette tribes. They battled beneath the looming mount storm King. Now,
- 11:24Speaker 3: the mountain, which was enraged over this battle, hurled a
- 11:29Speaker 3: massive stone into the valley, which damned the river, which
- 11:33Speaker 3: and gave birth to Lake Crescent. Okay, So the aftermath
- 11:37Speaker 3: of that mythical battle had instilled instilled fear into the
- 11:41Speaker 3: hearts of like generations of these Native American individuals, causing
- 11:46Speaker 3: them to actually steer clear of these lakes, believing it
- 11:50Speaker 3: to basically be cursed, and according to the chilling lore,
- 11:54Speaker 3: Crescent Lake never relinquishes it's dead, a belief that was
- 12:00Speaker 3: held very stern until this summer of nineteen forty of.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Course, Like what do you mean exactly by that? Like
- 12:07Speaker 2: people die in there but they're never found kind of thing.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yes, And I'm sure bodies are dumped in there too,
- 12:14Speaker 3: because the lake is actually known to be over six
- 12:16Speaker 3: hundred feet deep, and there are reports of some spots
- 12:20Speaker 3: apparently even being up too close to one thousand feet
- 12:23Speaker 3: deep in certain areas. Yeah, that's a deep ass lake.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that seems bizarre. Actually.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Now it's always been like notorious of this not
- 12:33Speaker 3: giving up the dead thing, and I'm assuming it's because
- 12:36Speaker 3: of that deep water. Even if you go back into
- 12:39Speaker 3: like the history with all these legends and stuff, I'm
- 12:42Speaker 3: assuming that deep water would make it hard to recover
- 12:44Speaker 3: some bodies.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Well, yeah, like I don't even know what you would
- 12:47Speaker 2: use to if you could even really go that deep
- 12:50Speaker 2: to look.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Hey not really, No.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I don't actually really know if i'd even want to
- 12:55Speaker 2: swim in there.
- 12:56Speaker 3: It sounds kind of terrified, just not knowing what's down there.
- 13:00Speaker 2: But that lake that we had that we used to
- 13:02Speaker 2: visit all the time, close to Jasper, it would have
- 13:05Speaker 2: probably have been pretty dang deep too.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I want that deep Horseshoe Lake. Yeah, no, no way,
- 13:10Speaker 3: it's that deep. Okay, not even close.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Well, I need the comparison, you know. I don't know
- 13:14Speaker 2: what lake I've been to that's been that deep.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Probably none, No, I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I think the closest would probably be like Francois, But
- 13:23Speaker 3: that's not even close to this. France was like maybe
- 13:26Speaker 3: one hundred feet deep or something. I'm thinking, but I
- 13:29Speaker 3: don't know. I'm just kind of going off like the
- 13:31Speaker 3: top of my head here. So anyways, it's a deep
- 13:35Speaker 3: ass lake. That's what we need to know. Yeah. So
- 13:40Speaker 3: the whole tale of Crescent Lake and what just happened
- 13:43Speaker 3: was spreading the mysterious woman that was found in the
- 13:46Speaker 3: heart of the lake swiftly acquired a very haunting moniker,
- 13:51Speaker 3: the lady of the lake. So the public, fueled by
- 13:54Speaker 3: this whole gripping narrative, had tabloids are going and it
- 14:00Speaker 3: basically started this whole mystique around the story who is
- 14:03Speaker 3: she what happened? How did she basically turn to fucking soap?
- 14:07Speaker 2: Well? Yeah, and how long has she been in there?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Like I have questions too.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah. So the authorities were now faced with an immense challenge.
- 14:14Speaker 3: They had to reveal the identity of this woman and
- 14:16Speaker 3: perhaps even more daunting, apprehend her ruthless killer because she
- 14:21Speaker 3: did have some marks of brutality on her body, right right,
- 14:26Speaker 3: and she was bowed and bound and tied. So her
- 14:30Speaker 3: body was taken in for examination, a vigil inspection and
- 14:33Speaker 3: the subsequent autopsy of her body showed that the woman
- 14:36Speaker 3: met a very violent death. Her neck was bruised and discolored,
- 14:40Speaker 3: her chest showed evidence of extensive hemorrhaging. So she had
- 14:45Speaker 3: clearly been beaten and strangled.
- 14:48Speaker 2: That's freaking sad it is.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Initially, there wasn't much to go on for identifying her,
- 14:54Speaker 3: as I had already sent fingerprints her finger, the tips
- 14:58Speaker 3: of her fingers, the tips of her toes, and her
- 15:00Speaker 3: face had decayed away. Okay, so there wasn't much for
- 15:04Speaker 3: identification unfortunately, But after tireless efforts, a breakthrough finally came
- 15:10Speaker 3: from an unexpected source, a tenacious medical student by the
- 15:15Speaker 3: name of Harlan McNutt. Now in the feet of sheer
- 15:18Speaker 3: will and diligence and examining the student unearthed a critical clue,
- 15:25Speaker 3: an upper dental plate. Okay, yeah, So this seemingly insignificant
- 15:30Speaker 3: piece of evidence served as the literal missing link connecting
- 15:34Speaker 3: the nameless victim to a woman who had vanished from
- 15:37Speaker 3: the local landscape three years ago. Three years, three years
- 15:44Speaker 3: she's been missing.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Oh my goodness.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:47Speaker 2: So to even be able to tell how she died
- 15:49Speaker 2: and stuff as a freaking miracle.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Really, her body was preserved beautifully.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Whoa Okay, I was thinking it was just going to
- 15:58Speaker 2: maybe be like a couple months, and that in itself
- 16:01Speaker 2: would almost be like a miracle that they could still
- 16:04Speaker 2: tell stuff. Yeah, but three.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Years, three years.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Wow. Also, kudos to this like doctor right for going
- 16:13Speaker 2: the extra mile on right to that.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And it wasn't even I don't think they were a
- 16:17Speaker 3: doctor yet. They were a medical student. Yeah time, I
- 16:19Speaker 3: love that, So good on them. Where am I here? Right? So,
- 16:23Speaker 3: Ladya Lake was found to be a woman by the
- 16:26Speaker 3: name of Haley Illingworth. She was a Port Angels waitress
- 16:31Speaker 3: with a story both of hope and unfortunately despair. Now
- 16:36Speaker 3: Haley was born on January eighth, nineteen oh one, into
- 16:40Speaker 3: the humble abode of diligent farmers in Greenville, Kentucky. Throughout
- 16:44Speaker 3: her young adult years, she embarked on series of journeys
- 16:47Speaker 3: heading westward, driven by the pursuit of a better life,
- 16:51Speaker 3: especially since she had gone through two marriages and just
- 16:55Speaker 3: recently ended her second. And on that journey, she found
- 16:58Speaker 3: her way to the shores of Lake Crescent. Yeah, amidst
- 17:03Speaker 3: the whole like beauty of Olympic, the Olympic Peninsula and
- 17:07Speaker 3: the whole surrounding area. Apparently it's gorgeous. Kind of want
- 17:09Speaker 3: to check it out.
- 17:10Speaker 2: How you first went about describing that though, I was like,
- 17:13Speaker 2: my first self was, Oh, does she want to be
- 17:14Speaker 2: an actress?
- 17:15Speaker 3: No, she doesn't want to be an actress. No, she's
- 17:17Speaker 3: just kinda like, I don't know, just you know, people
- 17:20Speaker 3: want to leave the town there and just I'm gonna
- 17:22Speaker 3: just go find something new to start exactly, start over
- 17:25Speaker 3: sort of thing, find something nice and find my own place.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And I think that's kind of what she was doing.
- 17:31Speaker 3: So she was trying to find her own place, and
- 17:33Speaker 3: in that process she had found herself working a job
- 17:35Speaker 3: as a barmaid at the Lake Crescent Tavern which is
- 17:38Speaker 3: now known as Lake Crescent Lodge. So here fate introduced
- 17:43Speaker 3: her to an individual named Montgomery aka monte j, a
- 17:48Speaker 3: very charismatic guy known as apparently a ladies man. Oh
- 17:53Speaker 3: and yet he was very deeply flawed. He was an
- 17:57Speaker 3: individual who drove a beer truck which delivered was frothy,
- 18:00Speaker 3: delicious beverages that I may or may not be enjoying.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Right now, that you may enjoy like, you know, daily.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Hey, hey, semi daily. But he would deliver those drinks
- 18:11Speaker 3: to the thirsty patrons at the tavern, you know, giving
- 18:14Speaker 3: them their supply. And it was because she worked there,
- 18:17Speaker 3: he made the deliveries. That's how they met.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:21Speaker 2: He probably liked going there then.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Probably, and she probably liked him showing up.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Ye.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And it was because of this that Monty and Haley
- 18:27Speaker 3: you know, had their their relationship bloom and their whole
- 18:30Speaker 3: romance thing began like a whole whirlwind. And that same
- 18:33Speaker 3: year they got married. It was June sixteenth, nineteen thirty six,
- 18:40Speaker 3: when Haley was thirty six years old.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Okay, and so they got married. This would have been
- 18:44Speaker 2: her third marriage then crrast.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Yes, or sorry. I believe she was thirty five years old.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Technically my bad. So Yet behind the whole love and affection,
- 18:53Speaker 3: as I had mentioned, Monty was somewhat of a flawed individual,
- 19:00Speaker 3: and that began to show rather quickly.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Did he do this? Did he do this?
- 19:05Speaker 3: Well, we're getting there. So their relationship turned out to
- 19:07Speaker 3: be quite volatile, if you will. Monty was known for
- 19:12Speaker 3: his charm, but he had this darker side. He didn't
- 19:15Speaker 3: even attempt to conceal his abuse on Haley or his
- 19:18Speaker 3: violence towards her. Only five months after their marriage, their
- 19:22Speaker 3: troubles in one event, spilled out into the streets in
- 19:27Speaker 3: the pre dawn altercation in front of a tavern that
- 19:29Speaker 3: they worked at. It was so fierce of a fight
- 19:33Speaker 3: apparently between the two, that law enforcement was called to
- 19:36Speaker 3: break it up.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I do not like that.
- 19:39Speaker 3: No, not cool at all.
- 19:41Speaker 2: No.
- 19:42Speaker 3: So in the weeks leading up to the holiday season
- 19:44Speaker 3: of nineteen thirty seven, Haley would arrive to work each
- 19:47Speaker 3: day with her face marred with fresh bruises.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Sometimes her eyes would be swollen, blackened, and there would
- 19:54Speaker 3: be large marks and bruises on her arms and stuff
- 19:57Speaker 3: as well.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Oh that's sickening.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Yeah, she wasn't living a very good life, and I
- 20:02Speaker 3: don't think she was pretty happy, especially now this is
- 20:04Speaker 3: clearly going to be another marriage that she doesn't want
- 20:07Speaker 3: to be in, right.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 3: And then on the morning of December twenty second, only
- 20:12Speaker 3: a few days before Christmas, as the sun rose over
- 20:15Speaker 3: the horizon, Haley never showed up to work and she
- 20:19Speaker 3: was never seen alive again.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Wow, I mean I saw that coming, but frick that
- 20:25Speaker 2: pisses me off.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yeah, who do you think did it?
- 20:29Speaker 2: I'm not sure. Actually, it's pretty clear. Well, I mean
- 20:34Speaker 2: sometimes you sure about that. I'm pretty sure about that.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So sure things happen though, but I'm pretty sure about that.
- 20:41Speaker 2: She feels so freaking bad for her, like she, i know,
- 20:44Speaker 2: was trying to start her life and this was her
- 20:46Speaker 2: third marriage, and the fact that she didn't even give
- 20:49Speaker 2: up at that point, like she got married again, right,
- 20:51Speaker 2: and she's probably so hopeful and then just like yeah.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Just getting kicked down over and over again. That that's heartbreaking,
- 20:59Speaker 3: it is. I really feel for Haley that she especially
- 21:03Speaker 3: that she ended up with this dirt bag. I'm being honest.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Oh yeah, on dirt bag.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah, so Monty was you know, question quickly where Haley was,
- 21:11Speaker 3: and hey, do you know where where she is? What happened?
- 21:14Speaker 3: Because hey, the spouse, right, always the first question, absolutely,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and Monty offered a rather feeble explanation for the concerned
- 21:21Speaker 3: friends and family. He claimed that she decided to flee
- 21:25Speaker 3: with a sailor from Alaska.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, bullshit.
- 21:29Speaker 3: It was like, oh, she went off with some other dude.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Would anyone even believe that?
- 21:32Speaker 1: No?
- 21:33Speaker 3: It pretty much just raised everyone's eyebrow, was like huh yeah. Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 3: So eventually months began passing by, but Haley's family received
- 21:41Speaker 3: no word from her, because like, hey, she'd probably send
- 21:44Speaker 3: letters or something, right, but didn't hear anything, And more
- 21:48Speaker 3: and more suspicions grew. But I mean, they couldn't do
- 21:51Speaker 3: anything right. Just Haley's gone. He says, she walked off
- 21:55Speaker 3: with another dude. What can you do?
- 21:56Speaker 2: What can they do?
- 21:57Speaker 3: Yeah, And because his wife allegedly ran off, Monty was
- 22:03Speaker 3: granted a divorce, and he promptly relocated to California to
- 22:07Speaker 3: live with a woman who was the roommate of Haley's sister,
- 22:11Speaker 3: and they apparently had already been having an affair before
- 22:16Speaker 3: Haley's disappearance.
- 22:17Speaker 2: This guy's a real winner.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he's he's a dick.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm actually surprised at that Haley's sister's friend would
- 22:24Speaker 2: even wanting to do with him.
- 22:26Speaker 3: No kidding, I'm surprised his name isn't Carl, Yeah, because
- 22:29Speaker 3: not cool Carl.
- 22:31Speaker 2: What is his name?
- 22:33Speaker 3: Monty?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Oh? Monty? Okay, I forgot. I was at the piece
- 22:37Speaker 2: of shit's name fair?
- 22:38Speaker 3: That's fair. So it would be three agonizing years later,
- 22:44Speaker 3: on the summer day of nineteen forty, when the secret
- 22:46Speaker 3: of Lake Crescent began to surface, two fishermen spotted Haley's
- 22:50Speaker 3: lifeless body wrapped up in the blankets and bound in
- 22:53Speaker 3: the water. So her journey to the surface of the
- 22:56Speaker 3: water was a happenstance of the elements mixed with the
- 23:00Speaker 3: crime itself. So we're going to touch on one of
- 23:03Speaker 3: those right now. So Lake Crescent had Hailey's body submerged
- 23:07Speaker 3: in the frigid deep waters. The cold basically became the
- 23:12Speaker 3: way on how she was preserved, thwarting any sort of decomposition.
- 23:16Speaker 3: She was basically thrown in a freezer is essentially what
- 23:20Speaker 3: it was.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Okay, that makes sense.
- 23:21Speaker 3: It's a cold ass lake, a deep ass lake, and
- 23:24Speaker 3: she was down at the bottom, so bacterial growth and
- 23:27Speaker 3: stuff not happening, right, Yeah, which makes me think if
- 23:31Speaker 3: someone was to dive to the bottom of that lake,
- 23:33Speaker 3: how many just bodies would be seen down there?
- 23:36Speaker 2: Gosh, I don't even think anyone could pay me to
- 23:38Speaker 2: do that.
- 23:38Speaker 3: That would be terrifying, right, It's not like you're seeing skeletons.
- 23:40Speaker 3: You're just going to see a perfectly preserved person.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's my one of my worst nightmares right there. Like,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I hate the seeing the bottom of water is terrifying.
- 23:50Speaker 3: The bottom of water is terrifying.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Really, why, because what the shit's down there? There's so
- 23:55Speaker 2: much we don't know. I think that's in like lakes and.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Well the ocean especially, Oh yeah no, yeah, so basically
- 24:04Speaker 4: being down there being thrown in this not not a freezer,
- 24:08Speaker 4: She's not frozen, but she's damn near.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Right yea like a fridge or yeah, even more so.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so slowly the salt and the calcium in
- 24:16Speaker 3: the water initially was what started the whole alchemy process
- 24:22Speaker 3: transforming her flesh into this like soap akin like substance.
- 24:27Speaker 3: So it became began this whole chemical process of breaking
- 24:31Speaker 3: her flesh down and turning it into something else. Okay,
- 24:35Speaker 3: So and being down there for so long gave it
- 24:37Speaker 3: time for that process to work.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Now the other part of the puzzle, the puzzle, sorry,
- 24:43Speaker 3: the puzzle. The other part of the puzzle was quickly
- 24:47Speaker 3: about two unfold. Now, suspicion around Monty quickly grew surprise, surprise,
- 24:55Speaker 3: and he found himself thrust into the harsh, glaring eyes
- 24:58Speaker 3: of the law. And mind you, he was in California
- 25:02Speaker 3: at the time. He was quickly extradited from Long Beach.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So one on October of nineteen forty one, Los Angeles
- 25:09Speaker 3: sheriff deputies knocked on his door, arrested, and charged him
- 25:13Speaker 3: with murder. Monty was swiftly transported back to the grounds
- 25:18Speaker 3: of Port Angels where justice was awaiting him.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Well, yeah, buddy, probably thought that he got away with this.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Probably sure, yeah he did.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh yeah, No, for sure, bud, for sure.
- 25:29Speaker 2: But oh yeah. Was he still with that chick? Do
- 25:32Speaker 2: you know? I don't know, okay, because I was curious
- 25:35Speaker 2: if he was beating her.
- 25:37Speaker 3: No, I don't know, okay. So the courtroom, of course,
- 25:41Speaker 3: was a stage for this whole sensational drama. And that's
- 25:44Speaker 3: exactly what. It was a sensation. World War two events
- 25:48Speaker 3: were happening at the time, and they were even competing
- 25:50Speaker 3: for front page news attention against the trial. In the
- 25:53Speaker 3: areas really you bet you. Ordinary citizens were compelled by
- 25:58Speaker 3: their morbid curiosity. They flocked to witness the unfolding drama
- 26:01Speaker 3: in the courtroom. Seemed like everyone was crowded in his courtroom,
- 26:05Speaker 3: their eyes wide with the mix of basically horror and fascination.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Much like myself at three am when I'm listening to
- 26:12Speaker 3: true crime podcast, watching murder documentaries, or researching cases, I
- 26:17Speaker 3: feel them.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's okay, yeah, I think we probably all do.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Definitely so in Montes's Montes's defense, or I was gonna say,
- 26:24Speaker 3: in his defense, No, Montes's defense there we Go was
- 26:28Speaker 3: rather feeble at best, Just like his explanation earlier on.
- 26:32Speaker 3: He argued adamantly that the deceased woman couldn't be Haley
- 26:36Speaker 3: because she was alive when he last saw her.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Okay, okay, right, she can't be dead.
- 26:44Speaker 3: I saw her alive before.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that, like everyone believes, you right, possibly be you right.
- 26:50Speaker 3: It's like she took a breath of air once. How
- 26:52Speaker 3: can she be in the ground That's that's what life
- 26:56Speaker 3: and death is, buddy. So anyways, evidence was clearly stacked
- 27:02Speaker 3: against him, and no one was believing this bullshit of Hey,
- 27:04Speaker 3: she was once alive. Yeah, we know. So sorry, it's
- 27:08Speaker 3: just it's the dumbest excuse me.
- 27:10Speaker 2: It is. I mean, but did you have any expectations
- 27:13Speaker 2: from him? Did he come up with anything better?
- 27:16Speaker 3: You got a point, No, I really didn't. But I mean,
- 27:19Speaker 3: I do always hope better for humanity, you know, high hopes,
- 27:23Speaker 3: but I know I'm always going to get let down.
- 27:27Speaker 3: So yeah, the evidence was stacked against him. It was
- 27:29Speaker 3: absolutely damning. There was a South Dakota dentist who actually
- 27:33Speaker 3: made the dental plate and they were the one who
- 27:35Speaker 3: helped identify the plate to Haley. They stood firm testifying
- 27:40Speaker 3: under the weight of the whole truth in the courtroom
- 27:41Speaker 3: that the dental plate found did in fact belong to her. Now,
- 27:46Speaker 3: along with that dental plate, they were actually able to
- 27:48Speaker 3: identify approximate body type, build stature, that sort of stuff,
- 27:55Speaker 3: some hair that was still on there with Haley's hair,
- 27:58Speaker 3: and then also friends Cease were able to identify clothes
- 28:02Speaker 3: worn by the body as belonging to Haley. Wow, and
- 28:06Speaker 3: Yet with all that evidence, the lynch pin in the
- 28:10Speaker 3: case was a very seemingly innocuous item, the rope that
- 28:16Speaker 3: bound Haley.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Oh okay, yep here I thought you were going to
- 28:19Speaker 2: be like, with all that evidence, he was found not guilty.
- 28:23Speaker 1: It's like what no, no.
- 28:24Speaker 3: No, there's another piece of evidence, really, because I mean,
- 28:27Speaker 3: the rope, in all honesty, everything else is just painting
- 28:31Speaker 3: the picture that it's Haley. Right, there's no evidence that
- 28:35Speaker 3: ties Monty to her yet true to nothing. Yeah, but
- 28:39Speaker 3: that rope ties Monty to Haley.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:42Speaker 3: So the rope, apparently Monty had borrowed it from the
- 28:47Speaker 3: tavern where he worked. The owner or sorry, where he
- 28:50Speaker 3: delivered to the owner basically said, yeah, he borrowed fifty
- 28:56Speaker 3: feet a rope, but he never returned it. He borrowed
- 28:58Speaker 3: this rope to get his truck pulled out of some
- 29:00Speaker 3: mud or something like that. Now, I do want to
- 29:02Speaker 3: disclaim this. There was a couple sources. I saw one
- 29:05Speaker 3: hundred feet of rope. Other sources I saw fifty feet
- 29:07Speaker 3: of rope. I saw fifty more often, So I'm going
- 29:09Speaker 3: with that. So, whether it was fifty or one hundred feet,
- 29:12Speaker 3: he borrowed a length of rope to apparently haul his
- 29:15Speaker 3: truck out but never returned it, and the fibers from
- 29:19Speaker 3: the rope were tested against fibers that still remained at
- 29:24Speaker 3: the tavern. The tavern still had some remnants of this rope,
- 29:28Speaker 3: so they tested the fibers against each other and it
- 29:30Speaker 3: was a perfect match. It was the rope.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Whoa, Okay, I mean, idiot, could he not have just
- 29:40Speaker 2: gone and bought rope? Like I'm sore, Like, I mean,
- 29:45Speaker 2: it's so good that he didn't, and then he's being
- 29:47Speaker 2: like caught here, but like what an idiot? Yeah, I mean,
- 29:51Speaker 2: grant you. I guess someone wherever he bought the rope
- 29:53Speaker 2: would be like, yeah, I bought rope, I don't know,
- 29:54Speaker 2: But still what an idiot?
- 29:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean maybe he could just, I don't know,
- 29:58Speaker 3: not kill his wife.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that would be much better. But like this
- 30:01Speaker 2: guy is like not cool.
- 30:05Speaker 3: No, definitely not. So. The courtroom painted a picture and
- 30:09Speaker 3: they believed that how it went down was something like this.
- 30:15Speaker 3: On that fateful day and this December night in nineteen
- 30:18Speaker 3: thirty seven, a fight erupted in their home. In a
- 30:21Speaker 3: fit of rage, Monty brutally beat and strangled Haley snuffing
- 30:25Speaker 3: out her life in a moment of violence. Now, Hollis
- 30:28Speaker 3: Faults was the dedicated criminologist from the Washington State Attorney
- 30:33Speaker 3: General's Office who pieced together this puzzle, and he believes
- 30:38Speaker 3: Monty had a desperate attempt to conceal his Hayinu's crime
- 30:42Speaker 3: and callously placed Haley's lifeless body into the trunk of
- 30:45Speaker 3: his car and then drove out to the water and
- 30:48Speaker 3: onto the darkness at Lake Crescent near the present day
- 30:54Speaker 3: Cabin Resort or the Tavern. He wrapped Haley's bodies and blankets,
- 30:58Speaker 3: securing the bundle with the rope that he had still
- 31:01Speaker 3: in the back of his vehicle, and in the dead
- 31:03Speaker 3: of night, he used a rowboat to make his way
- 31:05Speaker 3: out into the waters of the lake. He then tied
- 31:08Speaker 3: Haley's body up with some weights to weigh it down
- 31:11Speaker 3: so that she would sink when he dropped the bundle
- 31:13Speaker 3: into the water. And then that's exactly what he did.
- 31:16Speaker 3: He dropped her in the water, let the weights do
- 31:19Speaker 3: their thing, allowing the deep, dark water to swallow up
- 31:22Speaker 3: his terrible secret.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Well, his wife, what a cold hearted asshole? Yeah, like
- 31:29Speaker 2: that's his wife.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Yeah. Wow, For a split second, I thought you were
- 31:33Speaker 3: calling his wife a cold hearted asshole, but no, that's
- 31:35Speaker 3: his wife. He is a cold hearted asshole. Yeah, and
- 31:38Speaker 3: this brings us to the second part of the puzzle
- 31:41Speaker 3: on how that subponification occurred. Those ropes that tied Haley's
- 31:47Speaker 3: body to the weights eventually rotted and gave way. So
- 31:52Speaker 3: the weights are weighing her down while she's still kind
- 31:55Speaker 3: of floating and semi buoyant. So she's sitting there in
- 31:58Speaker 3: this whole process is a ring and eventually the ropes
- 32:01Speaker 3: let go, allowing her to float back to the surface.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that's wild. Hey, that that all worked
- 32:10Speaker 2: out like that.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Yeah. So during the investigation, there were rumors and whispers
- 32:16Speaker 3: that were circulating around of a potential accomplice, but none
- 32:21Speaker 3: were ever found and none where ever charged.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Hmmm. I wonder why they thought that, because, I mean,
- 32:27Speaker 2: haven't we done cases actually before where they've kind of
- 32:31Speaker 2: I can't remember which it was one of the ones
- 32:33Speaker 2: where he had killed his wife, I think anyway, and you're.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Going to have to be more specific, honestly.
- 32:41Speaker 2: One of them that we've done and I'm about too.
- 32:43Speaker 2: So they were showing something where he was trying to
- 32:48Speaker 2: throw her body overboard of a small boat with weights hard. Yes,
- 32:53Speaker 2: they were saying like it's almost impossible to do as
- 32:55Speaker 2: a like a solo person, which I don't it did
- 32:59Speaker 2: he did do it? But yeah, well actually that one
- 33:01Speaker 2: they weren't sure he did it. I can't remember. His
- 33:03Speaker 2: name was a scot or something.
- 33:05Speaker 3: That rings a bell, Yeah, but I can't recall, but
- 33:08Speaker 3: I do remember that something like, I vaguely remember that.
- 33:12Speaker 3: And I also being like, well, it is really tough
- 33:14Speaker 3: to like throw stuff out of a boat, but I mean, hey,
- 33:16Speaker 3: if the like, you can have a weight five feet
- 33:20Speaker 3: of rope and then a body pushed the body in
- 33:22Speaker 3: the water. Yeah, yeah, exactly. So anyways, there was rumors
- 33:30Speaker 3: of an accomplice, but no one was ever found. Jurors
- 33:33Speaker 3: deliberated for hours, and finally, on March nineteen forty two,
- 33:37Speaker 3: the verdict was delivered. Monty Illingworth was found guilty of
- 33:43Speaker 3: second degree murder and was sentenced to life behind bars
- 33:48Speaker 3: in Washington State Penitentiary in Walla, Walla. Good good Monty
- 33:53Speaker 3: only served nine years before he was released, and he
- 33:57Speaker 3: eventually passed away November fifth of nineteen seventy four.
- 34:01Speaker 2: What the shit, Yeah, he was why only nine years.
- 34:05Speaker 3: He was paroled after nine years. I couldn't find why,
- 34:07Speaker 3: but he.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Was, Well that's a mistake.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he should have rotted. Unfortunately he didn't. But he
- 34:15Speaker 3: did leave behind a very legacy of terrifying legacy for
- 34:18Speaker 3: a whole town and this lake that is now scarred
- 34:22Speaker 3: by the memory of what happened to Haley and the
- 34:24Speaker 3: legend of the lady of the lake.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Huh, this is a terrible question to ask. Yes, but
- 34:31Speaker 2: is there any like photos of what her body look like?
- 34:34Speaker 1: Then?
- 34:34Speaker 3: I didn't search for it.
- 34:36Speaker 2: If I'm being honest, I mean, that's probably good, but
- 34:38Speaker 2: I'm just it's intriguing what happened to her body, like
- 34:41Speaker 2: how it preserved. You know.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I did see photos of her, but I didn't
- 34:46Speaker 3: find or come across an autopsy report, which I am
- 34:49Speaker 3: assuming that's where I would find those photos if they
- 34:52Speaker 3: are out there.
- 34:53Speaker 2: And I'm sorry, but nine years is not enough because
- 34:56Speaker 2: he he not just like killed his wife, but he
- 34:58Speaker 2: was also beating her and and then he went about
- 35:00Speaker 2: hiding the crime. And like, what does that say or
- 35:04Speaker 2: term when you're basically.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Oh, you're asking me another term, just.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Like yester, love of God it's like when you're doing
- 35:11Speaker 2: something bad to a.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Body, like desecration of them.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, like that is so many things that he did. Yeah,
- 35:18Speaker 2: and like he should also have been charged with those
- 35:20Speaker 2: beatings because there was witnesses and stuff. Right, So I
- 35:23Speaker 2: don't understand how nine years is.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Okay, I don't either, but that is what he served.
- 35:27Speaker 3: That is the case. I'm honestly curious on why the
- 35:33Speaker 3: nine years really, but I have not been able to
- 35:35Speaker 3: find it yet. If I do ever find it out,
- 35:37Speaker 3: I'll let everyone out there know why. I'll just put
- 35:42Speaker 3: links and stuff.
- 35:42Speaker 2: But things like that happen. Unfortunately.
- 35:45Speaker 3: It is the justice system. Though it does sometimes come through,
- 35:48Speaker 3: it is still very very flawed in many ways. But
- 35:53Speaker 3: it's I mean, it's the best we got.
- 35:56Speaker 2: What a wild story. I've never heard of that one, neither.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Of I am. When I found that her skin was
- 36:01Speaker 3: could be scooped away like putty, that's what got you, Yes,
- 36:07Speaker 3: very much.
- 36:08Speaker 2: That would get yeah, wouldn't it? Well?
- 36:09Speaker 3: Because I was looking at it, I was like, oh,
- 36:10Speaker 3: she's like perfectly preserved after years. It's kind of like
