  Speaker 1: I was thinking about who we could talk about for

  Speaker 1: Black History Month, and I had a couple of ideas,

  Speaker 1: and then this one just kind of came to me
• 0:36
  Speaker 1: like a bolt of lightning. Sana Starros and I feel like,
• 0:40
  Speaker 1: not a lot of you know who this is. I
• 0:43
  Speaker 1: do not exactly, so it's gonna be very fun. This
• 0:47
  Speaker 1: is a character from the Marvel Star Wars comic books,
• 0:50
  Speaker 1: and before we get started, spoilers for the recent run
• 0:54
  Speaker 1: of those comics, and disclaimer that, like a lot of
• 0:57
  Speaker 1: big franchises, Star Wars canon is instantly constantly my god changing,

  Speaker 1: is Last Jedi even canon anymore? We don't know. No
• 1:06
  Speaker 1: one knows. Like literally, when Disney purchased it, they retired
• 1:11
  Speaker 1: the old canon as legends, but now they're still using
• 1:14
  Speaker 1: some of it and not the same. It's very confusing,
• 1:18
  Speaker 1: and the comics are ongoing, so this could change anyway.

  Speaker 1: With that being said, this is what I have for
• 1:27
  Speaker 1: you today. So I've told the story before, but during
• 1:31
  Speaker 1: the pandemic, I got really into Star Wars comics. I
• 1:34
  Speaker 1: had read them during the time of Legends, but this
• 1:38
  Speaker 1: was my first foray into the Disney version, and I,
• 1:43
  Speaker 1: like many people reading these comics, was shocked to find
• 1:46
  Speaker 1: out that Han Solo had a secret first wife named
• 1:50
  Speaker 1: Sana Starros. I'm yes when she first debuted in twenty
• 1:55
  Speaker 1: fifteen or did he? Okay? So, Sauna, also called Snissi
• 2:02
  Speaker 1: by her family, is a human woman born on Narshada,
• 2:06
  Speaker 1: which is also called the Smugglers Moon to give you
• 2:08
  Speaker 1: kind of a vibe for that planet. It's very lawless
• 2:12
  Speaker 1: or that moon. I always get that mixed up during
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: the time of the Galactic Civil War, so this is
• 2:17
  Speaker 1: when the time of the Empire and all that. Sauna
• 2:20
  Speaker 1: grew up wanting to see the galaxy and she applied
• 2:23
  Speaker 1: for the archaeology program at the University of bar Leth
• 2:28
  Speaker 1: and there she met doctor Chelly Afra and you can
• 2:32
  Speaker 1: see our episode on Afra for more. I love Afra.

  Speaker 1: But Afra would go on become a rogue archaeologist that
• 2:40
  Speaker 1: worked for Darth Vader and then with Luke and she's
• 2:43
  Speaker 1: got two like murdered droids. It's very fun. Saana and
• 2:48
  Speaker 1: Afra started a romantic relationship that ended abruptly when Afra
• 2:53
  Speaker 1: up and left didn't say anything, which obviously led to
• 2:57
  Speaker 1: a lot of resentment on Sauna's end, and I'm just
• 2:59
  Speaker 1: gonna say a grudge. Uh. Afra still had feelings for
• 3:04
  Speaker 1: her though, but more on that in a second. This
• 3:06
  Speaker 1: is also one thing that stuck out to me. I
• 3:07
  Speaker 1: remember reading these I was like, oh my god, it's
• 3:09
  Speaker 1: a queer relationship. These two women kissing in this comic book,
• 3:14
  Speaker 1: and I couldn't leave it in Star Wars. They're going
• 3:18
  Speaker 1: to do it anyway. Sauna then got tangled up in
• 3:23
  Speaker 1: trying to hunt down information on a filength Redex transmitter
• 3:28
  Speaker 1: and runs into none other than Han Solo and Jubakup.
• 3:32
  Speaker 1: She offers them half of the cut if they help her.
• 3:36
  Speaker 1: This whole situation is kind of complicated, but to just
• 3:39
  Speaker 1: simplify it, they're about to finish the job when bounty
• 3:42
  Speaker 1: hunters arrive looking for them. Sana tries to like bluff
• 3:46
  Speaker 1: their way out of it, but Han misunderstands the bluff
• 3:48
  Speaker 1: and takes her seriously, and he shoots the cargo out
• 3:51
  Speaker 1: of the airlock and all of the bounty hunters go
• 3:54
  Speaker 1: after it, and there goes their their money. Saana informed
• 3:58
  Speaker 1: him that she never should have hired him fair. However,
• 4:03
  Speaker 1: that apparently didn't stop them from working together again a
• 4:06
  Speaker 1: bit later, where they got married to pull off a heist.
• 4:11
  Speaker 1: Turns out she was right about Han because he absconded
• 4:16
  Speaker 1: with her half of the cut and kind of left
• 4:18
  Speaker 1: her high and try. Indeed, another grudge is developed. Sauna
• 4:24
  Speaker 1: decides that Han was only good for lying, and Han
• 4:27
  Speaker 1: decides rightly so she is dangerous and he needs to
• 4:30
  Speaker 1: avoid her. But it's easier said than done because sometime
• 4:35
  Speaker 1: around the Battle of Yavon, which is when the first
• 4:37
  Speaker 1: test Star was destroyed at the end of a new Hope,
• 4:40
  Speaker 1: she set out to find him, and she basically put
• 4:43
  Speaker 1: out a reward for anybody who could help her find
• 4:46
  Speaker 1: her a wayward husband. Some Rhodians confront her, demanding that
• 4:52
  Speaker 1: she pay up without giving her the information, but she
• 4:55
  Speaker 1: shoots them all in the knees and says she'll kill
• 4:57
  Speaker 1: them if they don't inform her that after Han killed Gredo,
• 5:03
  Speaker 1: Holly's fave, also a Rodean, but like the Han shot first.
• 5:08
  Speaker 1: Whole thing that's about gredo on Tatouine and then he
• 5:12
  Speaker 1: left the planet. From there, Sauna follows a bunch of
• 5:16
  Speaker 1: leads that eventually lead her to a planet with a
• 5:19
  Speaker 1: dangerous electrical storm atmosphere kind of thing, where Han and Leyah,
• 5:24
  Speaker 1: who are on a mission together, are hiding out because
• 5:27
  Speaker 1: the Imperials are too afraid to pursue them through the storms,
• 5:30
  Speaker 1: but they're like hanging around and waiting for them to
• 5:33
  Speaker 1: try to escape. Sauna doesn't care, though, and navigates past
• 5:37
  Speaker 1: the Imperials and through the storm, Landing next to Han's ship.
• 5:41
  Speaker 1: She confronts Han and Leya, introducing herself as Sauna Solo
• 5:45
  Speaker 1: and demands to know who Leyah is. I'm telling it
• 5:49
  Speaker 1: in linear fashion, but this is the first introduction you
• 5:52
  Speaker 1: get to her, by the way, like the backstory comes later.
• 5:55
  Speaker 1: So it was. It was a real shocker, and Leia
• 5:59
  Speaker 1: was indeed shot by this whole thing, and Han he
• 6:02
  Speaker 1: rushes to deny it. Heated words are exchanged, Sna slaps Han.
• 6:07
  Speaker 1: Leah pretty much throws her hands up in the air
• 6:10
  Speaker 1: and says this is none of my business and tries
• 6:12
  Speaker 1: to walk away. Han yes, and Han tries to stop her,
• 6:18
  Speaker 1: and then Sna realizes who Leyah is and just how
• 6:20
  Speaker 1: big the imperial bounty is on her head, and so
• 6:24
  Speaker 1: she destroys their ship, which was their only chance of escape,
• 6:28
  Speaker 1: and by the way, perhaps obviously it was not the
• 6:30
  Speaker 1: Millennium Falcon, it was a stolen Imperial shuttle, but anyway,
• 6:33
  Speaker 1: she destroys it, and she tells them that she's going
• 6:36
  Speaker 1: to turn Leya in and take Han with her. As
• 6:39
  Speaker 1: Sana is trying to contact the Imperials to tell them
• 6:43
  Speaker 1: about this, Lea kicks Han into her and grabs a
• 6:47
  Speaker 1: weapon of her own. But then the Imperials are already
• 6:50
  Speaker 1: on their way, and so they're tie fighters land and
• 6:53
  Speaker 1: those are the smallish shuttle things, by the way, So
• 6:57
  Speaker 1: soon there's a fight that's breaking out. Lea's shooting and
• 7:00
  Speaker 1: Hans shooting, but he's also telling Sauna that he's part
• 7:04
  Speaker 1: of the rebellion too, so if they come for Leya,
• 7:07
  Speaker 1: they're going to capture and execute him as well. So
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: Sona relents and the three of them board sauna ship
• 7:13
  Speaker 1: and escape the imperials. Leya then demands that Sauna set
• 7:19
  Speaker 1: course for Narshada, her home planet, because Luke Skywalker has
• 7:23
  Speaker 1: been captured once again and is being held there and
• 7:27
  Speaker 1: they need to rescue him. Sna refuses at first and
• 7:30
  Speaker 1: turns down the credits that Leah offers her. Instead, she
• 7:34
  Speaker 1: says all she wants is her husband, and Leia is
• 7:38
  Speaker 1: like fine, So they head to Narshada and chaos ensues.
• 7:46
  Speaker 1: As for usual, I actually love this. This comic arc
• 7:49
  Speaker 1: is one of my favorites. But anyway, chaos and through
• 7:52
  Speaker 1: all of this, Sauna ends up buried under some rocks
• 7:55
  Speaker 1: and Lea saves her, and this is when Sna reveals
• 7:58
  Speaker 1: to her that the marriage with Han was fake and
• 8:02
  Speaker 1: tells her the whole story, and they kind of form
• 8:04
  Speaker 1: a bond, kind of jokingly teasing about Han and how
• 8:10
  Speaker 1: he's not so good at a lot of things. But anyway,
• 8:13
  Speaker 1: as is the persuasive way Leah has with smugglers, she
• 8:17
  Speaker 1: convinces Sauna to help work with the rebellion. As luck
• 8:32
  Speaker 1: would have it, Sanna's first mission is transporting wouldn't you
• 8:36
  Speaker 1: know it, her former lover Afra to the Alliance's sun
• 8:40
  Speaker 1: Spot prison, which is a mission that Leah hired her
• 8:43
  Speaker 1: for and joins her on, and it goes about as
• 8:46
  Speaker 1: well as you might think, which is actually probably worse
• 8:49
  Speaker 1: than you I think badly. It goes badly. Sana threatens Afra,
• 8:55
  Speaker 1: telling her that she hopes that she gets killed, and
• 8:58
  Speaker 1: refuses to help her escape when Afra ask The prison
• 9:02
  Speaker 1: is then intact and Sona and Leya have to work
• 9:04
  Speaker 1: together to save the prisoners, despite Sna kind of thinking
• 9:07
  Speaker 1: that they should be killed, and they do save Afra.
• 9:12
  Speaker 1: They give her a blaster. At one point, Sana attacks Afra,
• 9:16
  Speaker 1: but Leya intervenes to stop them. It was kind of warranted,
• 9:20
  Speaker 1: but anyway. They argue, with Afra telling Sna to get
• 9:25
  Speaker 1: over a crush and something that happened a long time ago,
• 9:28
  Speaker 1: and Sauna telling Afra to learn how to stab someone
• 9:31
  Speaker 1: in the front. Turns out this whole attack was about
• 9:36
  Speaker 1: killing Afra, and Sauna is about to do it, despite
• 9:40
  Speaker 1: Leya and Afras please otherwise. And then Leya gets to
• 9:44
  Speaker 1: R two D two and is able to disable the
• 9:46
  Speaker 1: artificial gravity. So now they're all floating about and violence
• 9:50
  Speaker 1: is going on, obviously, and through the chaos, Sonna and
• 9:56
  Speaker 1: Afra are fighting, and Afra apologizes for tying her while
• 10:01
  Speaker 1: Sauna is choking her. Sauna is still mad, but the
• 10:05
  Speaker 1: three women work together to defeat those who had attacked
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: the prison in typical Afra fashion, she takes the opportunity
• 10:12
  Speaker 1: to escape, and Sauna actually helps her. She kind of
• 10:16
  Speaker 1: like kicks her into an escape pod and says, I
• 10:18
  Speaker 1: never want to see you ever again. Get out. From
• 10:23
  Speaker 1: then on, Sauna takes various jobs with the Alliance, at
• 10:27
  Speaker 1: times working with Han, Leah Lando, and yes later on
• 10:30
  Speaker 1: Afra again. She helped steal a star story, which is
• 10:34
  Speaker 1: a huge deal. She helped rescue Han and Luke where
• 10:38
  Speaker 1: she shot Afra, but then made up with her. She
• 10:41
  Speaker 1: always claimed that she was in it for the money,
• 10:43
  Speaker 1: but Luke disagreed and thought there was more to her
• 10:46
  Speaker 1: than that, which is funny because he said the same
• 10:48
  Speaker 1: thing about Han and Lando and Afra, and he was
• 10:53
  Speaker 1: right once again, because it turns out a lot of
• 10:56
  Speaker 1: those credits she'd been getting she was giving to a
• 10:58
  Speaker 1: hospital on her home planet. She really did a lot
• 11:02
  Speaker 1: of stuff. It was hard for me not to just
• 11:04
  Speaker 1: go into every mission she did. But she went on
• 11:06
  Speaker 1: a rescue mission to save Afra with the help of
• 11:09
  Speaker 1: Afra's X and Current Situationship I don't know, helped smuggle Han, Luke,
• 11:15
  Speaker 1: and Lea away from the Imperials, was captured during torture
• 11:19
  Speaker 1: during the process, and she did reveal their location, but
• 11:22
  Speaker 1: together they managed to escape. So that's just some of
• 11:26
  Speaker 1: the highlights. She's a really interesting character. She's chaotic emotionally,
• 11:31
  Speaker 1: but she has she has growth, and she's extremely competent
• 11:35
  Speaker 1: when it comes to smuggling and all the skills that entail.
• 11:38
  Speaker 1: She's got a lot of cool gadgets. She's good at
• 11:40
  Speaker 1: piloting weapons, bluffing, and I do kind of love her messy,
• 11:46
  Speaker 1: wild relationship with Afra. She got her own comic miniseries
• 11:52
  Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three with the release of Star Wars
• 11:54
  Speaker 1: Santa Starovs Number one, which I have not read yet,
• 11:58
  Speaker 1: but I am excited too. I am so behind on

  Speaker 1: my comics. Oh but I am very excited. This is

  Speaker 1: fun to remember all of this. Yeah, I remember where

  Speaker 1: I was when I read that. Yeah, she's fun. She's fun, messy,

  Speaker 1: very bud that's going on in our life. She does
• 12:20
