- 0:00I've got winners. I've got losers, chain smokers.
- 0:05And what's the rest of the song, man?
- 0:06I think it's something about boozers, maybe chain smokers and
- 0:11boozers. I love this bar.
- 0:18All right, everybody. I don't have any coffee.
- 0:21Brother Mike in the bedroom. Getting it on, getting ready to
- 0:23come on out. You like your bedroom?
- 0:26You got a nice brew Rider. It's.
- 0:31It's Floridian. It's Floridian.
- 0:33We got that teal color. We had a great time.
- 0:34We're having a great time. Are we actually live with your
- 0:38show. I'm Kenny with.
- 0:39You're looking live. Oh.
- 0:41OK, let's show them Here, let me.
- 0:43Give you the. Tour we're going to break the
- 0:44race down, break the race down. There's a door, can't open it.
- 0:48Can't open the door door. All right, so here we are.
- 0:53Beautiful Pensacola, FL Home with the big one.
- 0:55Cradle on feet. Look at the people on their feet
- 0:58right there. So very nice, very nice.
- 1:06You know, as they say, you know what they say, brother, They say
- 1:11must be, must MUSS not must, must be nice.
- 1:17All right, we are going to break down.
- 1:20We are going to break down this race, I believe.
- 1:25I believe that this was one of the greatest NASCAR races in
- 1:29history for all these reasons. Now comment right here.
- 1:33You want to go at it with me? You want to argue with me?
- 1:35I like that because it does like that.
- 1:38Yes, you'll you'll Start learning me.
- 1:41I like confrontation because then it gives me more content,
- 1:45gives me ideas. So I I don't like NASCAR.
- 1:50Ain't nothing. So anyway, the reason we're
- 1:56going to tell you multiple reasons why this was the
- 1:59greatest race in NASCAR history, Bill Elliott once said to me,
- 2:03Herman, it's all about time and circumstances.
- 2:07What better time to have a race, You know, when those cars were
- 2:11coming off a Turn 4? Brother, you know, we're all
- 2:14watching it on TVI just landed in Pensacola.
- 2:17Mike was here. Where were you at when you
- 2:19watched it? I was sitting right where I'm
- 2:22sitting now looking at that television right there and we
- 2:25were waiting to come get you at the airport and we knew we were
- 2:28going to be 5 minutes late, but we thought, well, you can wait 5
- 2:30minutes because we want to see the last few laps.
- 2:33OK, so Mike is leading up to for the reason this was the greatest
- 2:39race in NASCAR history. Why didn't you leave right away
- 2:42and come pick me up? Because it was intense and they
- 2:45had red flagged the race previous to that, you know, just
- 2:48with a few laps to go and they were running three wide 5 rows
- 2:53deep. Why were they able to run 3 wide
- 2:56there? I mean, Daytona, they can only
- 2:59do it for a while, but it seemed like they stayed three wide in
- 3:01Atlanta. They did.
- 3:02They I think just the track, you know, you know, the tracks
- 3:05newer, it's got more grip, the cars are different and everybody
- 3:08wanted to win. I mean it was it's a wide open
- 3:10racetrack anymore. Everybody says what's different
- 3:12of Atlanta. Well, they made it and they've
- 3:14taken so much horsepower away from the cars that they can run
- 3:17wide open. I know that's why I think a lot
- 3:19of people hear that wide open. It's like, wow, why can't you
- 3:22run Atlanta wide open now? On my timeline on Twitter, I
- 3:25post a video and I write wide open.
- 3:28I mean if you doubt wide open, I mean they they were due to Matt.
- 3:33So you know, the question that begs is the art of negativity.
- 3:38Negativity. You know that it's like you
- 3:41could have everything perfect, but there's still the shit
- 3:44disturbers out there. They want to say something.
- 3:46I mute those. You'll learn my technique on X.
- 3:49What I do is it's it's mute. Mute is my friend.
- 3:52Mute makes you think that I'm still allowing you to follow me
- 3:56and you are, but I don't see a thing you're saying because I
- 4:00know you're stirring up crap. But anyway, this race and all
- 4:04the wrecking. See, I see the wrecking.
- 4:07As you know, Dick Trickle's got this old saying God'll want to.
- 4:12I see the wrecking as they want to.
- 4:14They want it. They want it so bad.
- 4:17But there's another side to what Dick Trickle always said you
- 4:22must first finish to finish first.
- 4:25But I feel like you said, you know, the red flag out, like,
- 4:28you know, so many laps ago, those were drivers, you know,
- 4:31doing everything they needed to do.
- 4:34What those cars are doing, they listening to Kevin Harwick
- 4:37talking during the commentary. Cars are not the easiest to
- 4:40drive. They're not the big downforce
- 4:42cars used to drive and you just mat it and go on.
- 4:45They're kind of up on top of the racetrack, so you can tell
- 4:47everybody who's driving to win the race.
- 4:50Chris Buscher spends out all by himself.
- 4:52Respond right here. Are you that good?
- 4:55Are you better than all the drivers do?
- 4:57Do you think you could get in these drivers and out drive
- 5:00them? Respond right here.
- 5:01Only if you had money or had a chance.
- 5:05If I had a chance, I could outrun those boys.
- 5:09So we know that's what they all say.
- 5:13But I mean, we did see everybody just lose their cars.
- 5:16You looked at Pit Rd. proved to be one of the most difficult pit
- 5:19roads in Motorsports history. Oh, they come to Pit Rd. under
- 5:23Green and crashed straight away, you know.
- 5:26Yeah, we saw that take out Chase Elliott and of course with
- 5:29Michael McDowell down into Turn 3, one of the craziest pit
- 5:34roads. I don't know what they're going
- 5:35to do to fix that. But I also another thing I've
- 5:40never in my racing life witnessed.
- 5:43I don't know if you caught on to it, but they had enormous amount
- 5:47of penalties. The penalties were off, off the
- 5:50charts, just penalty. Don't.
- 5:52We will get into the Joey Logano glove thing later this week.
- 5:56I'll make a whole another show about that, but did you were you
- 6:00aware? Well, go ahead, go ahead and and
- 6:03tell them. No, I don't need a Yuki.
- 6:04I don't want to know. Just.
- 6:05The way you said that, so it just kind of caught on at
- 6:07Daytona. They learned in the wind tunnel
- 6:10you're driving down. OK, I got to use my left hand,
- 6:16trouble turn on, trouble turn one.
- 6:21So the driver is driving with his right hand, takes his left
- 6:25hand and and puts it like this. So there's air turbulence coming
- 6:29in the window a little bit because they cannot mess with
- 6:33the body of the car. They cannot put any deflector on
- 6:37the A post. Back in the day, you can play
- 6:39with the body. You're not allowed to touch
- 6:41these cars. So he wore a glove that was not
- 6:44a real glove. It had web on it like a like
- 6:48spider man. He had a glove that had webbing
- 6:52in it, like, see the fingers. The fingers were together like
- 6:55this. And when he was qualified, he
- 6:57put his hand up and that would make the air stay outside of the
- 7:02car. So, and it was not, it was not
- 7:05what they call approved by safety regulations S something.
- 7:10SF. ISFI It was not an SFI approved.
- 7:14Glove. But wouldn't that glove with the
- 7:15webbing categorize Joey Logano as Superman then?
- 7:19Is that Superman? Superman.
- 7:21Find the walls. Oh, yeah.
- 7:23OK, Spider Man. OK, Spice Spider Man. 2 old
- 7:31dummies here. So anyway, it just goes back to
- 7:35why we said this was the best race ever.
- 7:39Super. Like a lot of penalties and all
- 7:42the penalties pissed me off. I'm like, my God anymore.
- 7:45How many more penalties? And I was getting mad and then
- 7:48all of a sudden I realized this is a really good race.
- 7:50I'm entertained. I'm talking to the TV now.
- 7:53And then, Mike, you were the one that reminded me when in your
- 7:58mind, we're not. Listen, I told you guys 100
- 8:01times, I'm not a journalist, that you can make fun of me all
- 8:04you want. That Walls don't know the name
- 8:06of the team he's supposed to know.
- 8:09No, I'm not. I'm not supposed to know none of
- 8:10that stuff. You are.
- 8:12And you're supposed to tell me everything right here.
- 8:15So, Mike, you told me what you thought was the last three wide
- 8:22finish in NASCAR history. When was it?
- 8:25Well, I'm not a historical person, but it had to be in the
- 8:28late 50s, early 60s at Daytona International Speedway was a
- 8:31famous pitcher, those three cars.
- 8:34Come across the. Line just like that.
- 8:36It took till Monday sometime to determine exactly who won the
- 8:40race because they had to go through all the still
- 8:42photography and that was last night was by far the greatest
- 8:48finish because the finish started way back off of turn. 2
- 8:52And so anybody's talked about in America right now, It's on every
- 8:55channel. It's everywhere.
- 8:57You know you come off a turn 2. I even told him that as we're
- 9:00watching, with Blaney driving into turn one.
- 9:04I said by all rights he should win this thing, but we'll have
- 9:06to see what happens. They come off A2, Blaney
- 9:09stretched out a little bit. Come to find out, Blaney tells
- 9:12everybody afterwards. He backed up throttle a little
- 9:14bit, trying to close the gap up and they had the momentum on
- 9:17him. I'll tell you something.
- 9:19You hear that all the time. You're playing the piano that
- 9:26that, that backing up. That's like, I'm so great.
- 9:29I'm going to drag the brake and I'm going to back up.
- 9:31No, you're allowing them to catch you.
- 9:34And that's an Art Earnhardt did that, Gordon did it.
- 9:36And all the drivers like I'm going to back on up, Well back
- 9:39up, be careful back in the truck.
- 9:43Say what? He was trying to back up.
- 9:44You're good at it. He was trying to back up, but he
- 9:46left the lane in between him open.
- 9:48Yeah, Remember Super Speedway superstar here?
- 9:51He's won at Daytona. How many times?
- 9:52Click. Click right here.
- 9:54Yes, three. Mike wanted Daytona three times.
- 9:57Did you ever did? You want to talk about Teledea
- 9:59three times? Yes, but you know, I know this,
- 10:03but did you ever back on up? When we were push drafting.
- 10:08When we could push drafting. The You drag the brake a little
- 10:10bit, you. Drag the brake and catch the guy
- 10:12behind you because you want him to engage with you.
- 10:15Catch the guy behind you. Allow him to get to you.
- 10:20I will say back in those days that we were allowed to talk to
- 10:24other drivers, Wow, You know, we had radio frequencies.
- 10:27We had as many as 16 drivers we could talk to you talking about.
- 10:30Confusion. You got this thing on your
- 10:32dashboard, tells you channel 16 is the five car da da da da, you
- 10:37know all the way around. So Ron Hornaday and I were
- 10:39driving for. And you won Talladega.
- 10:41Oh, we killed them. We killed.
- 10:43I mean, we did such a great job. This is breaking news in the
- 10:46garage here. You're you mean to tell me you
- 10:48were able to talk to your competitor that was helping you
- 10:50win? Oh.
- 10:51Yeah. Then we did that for a while.
- 10:53NASCAR allowed that for two years.
- 10:55Then they just outlawed all the radios and everything else.
- 10:58So you literally would take your radios to the radio guys and
- 11:01you'd program in everybody's team, anybody you thought that
- 11:04was good enough to help you. You program them in and they
- 11:07made you an index card that you take to the dashboard.
- 11:10Now think about you're trying to read the index card on the
- 11:13dashboard while racing, then reach it down there.
- 11:16We raise the radio races. We could see the numbers and you
- 11:19could literally, in my case, most of it was, hey Hornaday,
- 11:23OK, I'm backing up to you. Come on, come on, Hit.
- 11:25Help me win. I'm coming, he said.
- 11:27OK, here we are And we engaged, literally engaged and we run,
- 11:32you know, 3-4 mile an hour a lot faster than everybody else.
- 11:35And that's what's happening still today.
- 11:37You know, it's funny. They outlawed that for a while
- 11:39all the way through all three series.
- 11:41Then they come back and said, OK, the Cup guys are intelligent
- 11:45enough and good enough to do that, but we can't let the
- 11:48Xfinity. Car because they're dumb.
- 11:49They're dumb. They.
- 11:50Can't do it without wrecking. Well, they all prove that they
- 11:53all can wreck. So hey, that is, that is another
- 11:56good point. Sometimes people and you and I
- 11:58were cup drivers forever, so that is a false narrative.
- 12:02Now the experience level might be there, but to think cup
- 12:06drivers are smarter than say Austin Hill or you know some of
- 12:10those, I mean Jesse, not experience.
- 12:12I get it. But everybody wrecks and the Cup
- 12:15guys prove it all the time. Yeah, but.
- 12:17They prove it all the time but last night we proved how talent
- 12:20they were. I mean through three and four
- 12:22and coming to the checkered flag last night 3 wide not just at
- 12:25the front of the pack. We wide rewatched that if you
- 12:27remember and the 2nd and 3rd row back meaning running for. 4:00
- 12:31to 6:00. Seven through.
- 12:32Eight. Look at the replay coming off in
- 12:34turn four. They were three wide for the
- 12:36win. Three wide.
- 12:38Right behind them that bubble Wallace.
- 12:40That is 2 top fives in a row. Respond right here.
- 12:43Why? Mike and I are wrong.
- 12:46That was not the greatest race of all time.
- 12:49You're trying to make NASCAR look good.
- 12:51We want you to make them look bad.
- 12:54No, that was the greatest race ever.
- 12:55Think about. Think about, yeah, think about
- 12:58some of you how you just are. Another reason it was such a
- 13:02good race is because there's people that love negativity and
- 13:05now they're pissed off because that was a great race.
- 13:08It has now brought NASCAR. You know, NASCAR has been on its
- 13:11way back for quite a while and now this just brings it up
- 13:14quickly. Maybe five steps, you know.
- 13:17You brought up to me last night. There was a cool part about that
- 13:19race, too, is there's so many fans in the grandstand.
- 13:22How about the crowd? How about the crowd?
- 13:24It was not a crowd like it used to be.
- 13:27They got less stands. We don't care.
- 13:30It was crowded. How about that crowd?
- 13:33Yeah, it was great. You know, I think I was told
- 13:36that most of those people showed up, or that trackside show
- 13:40you're doing that, You and John Roberts.
- 13:41Did James Rogers and Luder booter?
- 13:44Had just an enormous walk up crowd to come watch.
- 13:47You that that Trackside Live is back and the reason it's doing
- 13:50so good is because the drivers like it.
- 13:53For example, Christopher Bell showed up and he he was full of
- 13:57pride. I can see he was looking at the
- 13:58crowd. We could drop some videos in and
- 14:02I don't know if Charlie's going to show you anything but there
- 14:05had to be, you know there was thousands of people there, Mike,
- 14:09all the fans, they want to get their cars parked.
- 14:13They want something to do. You know they're there at 10 in
- 14:15the morning. The race doesn't start till
- 14:173:00. So that you know behind the
- 14:19grand says you have all these shows and but the drivers, they
- 14:23they like coming. You know we had Christopher
- 14:25Bell, William Byron the the Daytona 500 champion.
- 14:29So yeah, you're right. I think NASCAR is doing the
- 14:31things to, you know, they they messed up.
- 14:35They're bringing it back. You know, you're old like I am.
- 14:37So you ever heard the story? History repeats itself.
- 14:40Oh yeah, my teachers taught me. That so history is repeating
- 14:43itself. They're utilizing you because
- 14:46you guys had a very successful, successful show, a trackside
- 14:50show back in the day. The fans.
- 14:51They all. Got rid of it thinking they
- 14:53didn't need it. Then they realized, Oh no, we
- 14:55need it. So who did they bring back as
- 14:58you? Because you were the anchor of
- 14:59it and you brought Johnny Roberts back.
- 15:01To Joel, Robert. And so they. 3 or 15 minutes, we
- 15:05better stop. So anyway, that was the greatest
- 15:10race in NASCAR history. Here's why my reason when they
- 15:14were coming off of Turn 4 through the TVI can hear the the
- 15:18vibration sound, the verbration. Like, you know, like you turn
- 15:22the bass up on on music, you could hear them rumbling off the
- 15:27corner and it's like, it's like they had the cars, had another
- 15:31gear and they were just coming off the corner and everybody was
- 15:34like, nobody could believe here we're going to end it like this.
- 15:38Remember what I told you about Jack Buck when Ozzie Smith hit a
- 15:43home run for us to win a major playoff game with the Cardinals?
- 15:47He said. I don't believe what I just saw
- 15:52and that's that's what everybody was doing after the Cup race at
- 15:56Atlanta. I'm still speechless since they
- 15:59Mike, you bring up a good point. Why did they not touch each
- 16:03other? Why did they not wreck each
- 16:05other coming to the to start finish line for the win?
- 16:08The real reason is, is they are supposed to be the most talented
- 16:11race car drivers in America and they just proved it.
- 16:13Sometimes in the race they don't prove it, but they did.
- 16:16And it wasn't just the front row, it was the next.
- 16:20Nobody wrecked. They wrecked.
- 16:21The whole race. They wrecked the whole race.
- 16:25But when it came down to Showtime, money, time, they all
- 16:28ran like perfect, hard, aggressive laps.
- 16:30And when you said you heard them motors change time, you did
- 16:34because they were all stuck in a draft and they were picking
- 16:36their run as fast as those cars are.
- 16:37Possible. Probably the best draft of the
- 16:39day. Yeah, so yeah.
- 16:41And if you don't know when you're drafting cars, it picks
- 16:43up mile per hour. Picks up RPM.
- 16:45It's different. Yeah.
- 16:52All right. Remember everybody, we are in
- 16:56podcast form. I did not do an intro to the
- 16:59show because because I thought it would be a little weird, but
- 17:02we are in podcast form everybody, said Herman, Why why
- 17:05don't you put that in podcast form?
- 17:07I said we are Kenny Wallace Podcast, The Kenny Wallace Show.
- 17:10We're on iTunes and Spotify. Respond right here.
- 17:14Was it the greatest NASCAR race you've ever seen?
- 17:18And that is the subject at hand. We are in Pensacola, FL.
- 17:22I'm racing down here all week. I asked my brother Mike and my
- 17:27nephew Matt to come on down. We're going to go.
- 17:30I got no coffee. I'm shaking.
- 17:32I got no coffee. And we're dirt racing at a
- 17:35racetrack that is like Field of Dreams.
- 17:37It's literally located out in the middle of somewhere and
- 17:39nowhere. The Field of Dreams, you build
- 17:41it. They will come Northwest Florida
- 17:44Speedway. Yeah.
- 17:46All right. Goodbye, everybody.
- 17:47Say goodbye, Mike. Bye everybody.
