- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We are taking a one week hiatus
- 0:19from the book of Isaiah and we're going through just some of
- 0:22my favorite passages of scripture.
- 0:25And today we are in Matthew chapter 6 with the Lord's Prayer
- 0:29in Matthew 69 through 13. I actually just finished
- 0:35preaching not too long ago, John 17, which is Jesus high priestly
- 0:41prayer to the Father as he is going to the Garden of of
- 0:45Gethsemane prior to his death. And so we looked at Jesus's
- 0:50prayer to the Father. This is Jesus's, if you will
- 0:53model prayer. This is the prayer that he told
- 0:56his disciples to pray and that Christians have been praying for
- 1:002000 years. Many churches even recite
- 1:03through this prayer regularly, whether in daily prayer weekly
- 1:09in their services, some just intermittently.
- 1:13But this is a wonderful prayer to pray.
- 1:15I actually pray this prayer, a slightly modified form with my
- 1:19kids every single night. And so I was like, listen, I
- 1:22know about the Lord's Prayer, and so I'm going to talk about
- 1:25it on Tabernacle talk with my people.
- 1:28And so let's look at this together.
- 1:32The Lord's Prayer is this. Therefore, you should pray like
- 1:35this, Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy, Your
- 1:41Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
- 1:46Give us today Our Daily Bread and forgive us our debts, as we
- 1:50also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into
- 1:53temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
- 1:57Or if you know, kind of the older version with the King
- 2:01James has been immortalized in several different venues.
- 2:07Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy
- 2:11Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
- 2:16Give us this day Our Daily Bread.
- 2:17Forgive us and I apologize profusely.
- 2:22I have prayed enough times with my kids, the slightly like
- 2:25easier version for a, you know, a two and a four year old that
- 2:28I've forgotten how the end of that particular line goes.
- 2:31But obviously then lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
- 2:35from evil. Thine is the Kingdom and the
- 2:38power and the glory forever. Amen.
- 2:43I know someone's going to be listening.
- 2:44Be like, dude, how do you forget that?
- 2:45Like one or two lines of forgive us and as we also forgive our
- 2:51debtors, listen sometimes even my brain forget stuff quite
- 2:56often actually. Let's talk through what can we
- 3:00learn from this prayer number one, as Jesus instructs us to
- 3:07pray like this. This gives us a wonderful
- 3:11template for the way in which we should pray.
- 3:15There are many prayers that are listed in the Bible and we can
- 3:18learn from all of them. All Scripture is breathed out by
- 3:21God and is profitable for doctrine, for proof, for
- 3:25correction, and for instruction and righteousness, so that the
- 3:27man or woman of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped
- 3:31for every good purpose. But I think when this is coming
- 3:36directly from the mouth of God himself, and he says pray like
- 3:39this, that it should really encourage and prompt us not just
- 3:44to pray these exact words, but as he says, therefore you should
- 3:47pray like this or pray in this manner.
- 3:51I think is how some translations phrase it, that the packaging is
- 3:58important. I love first he says our Father
- 4:01in heaven. The most essential aspect of
- 4:04prayer is who it is towards. It is towards our Father, the
- 4:09one who delights to hear our prayers, the one who wants our
- 4:13prayers. And so we can pray not just to
- 4:17our God or our King or our sovereign or our Lord, though he
- 4:20is all of those things. He is our Father.
- 4:23He is the dad who is a good father or a good, good father,
- 4:28as Chris Tomlin and and Pat Barrett would say.
- 4:32And so because he is good, he delights to hear from us and he
- 4:37will give us good gifts. He will give us the Holy
- 4:41Spirit's full and free work in our lives.
- 4:44He will be the one that transforms us as we call out to
- 4:47him. He, he is not a vending machine.
- 4:51You can notice in here, as Jesus instructs us to pray like this,
- 4:55that there's no specific asking for some things, though
- 4:59certainly elsewhere in Scripture we could see we can pray for
- 5:02specifics. But what we recognize most when
- 5:07we come to Scripture and when it talks about prayer is prayers
- 5:11more about aligning our will and our character with the will and
- 5:15character of God more than it is about getting stuff.
- 5:19So we recognize that we have a father.
- 5:24We recognize that God's not just in relationship with us, He's
- 5:28also in relationship with others and we have a relationship with
- 5:32others. This is what we read.
- 5:34Our Father in heaven. It's not just my Father in
- 5:39heaven. It is our.
- 5:40So recognize that you are part of a larger whole.
- 5:46And if you are not a part of a local church, I want to
- 5:49encourage you do that. Dive into the body of Christ as
- 5:54a whole. I just preached a message from
- 5:56the time that I'm recording this this past Sunday from First
- 5:59Corinthians 12 verses 12 through 27 on us being the body of
- 6:03Christ. And that was God's design.
- 6:06The Holy Spirit placed us into that body together.
- 6:09He indwells all of us. We all have the same mission,
- 6:12the same God, the same purpose, the same heavenly Father, the
- 6:16same Savior. And so we ought to be connected
- 6:20to one another. A person that is not an active
- 6:25part of a local church ought to pursue that if they are
- 6:30physically able to do so. Super important.
- 6:35It's not my Father in heaven. It is or and it's not just
- 6:38Father in Heaven, it is our Father.
- 6:41And then he's in heaven. And this is the place that we
- 6:44are asking for his Kingdom to come from.
- 6:47We recognize that God is in, if you will, He's in the good place
- 6:51and we need to be made more like Him.
- 6:55And we recognize that He is high, He's lifted up, He's holy,
- 6:59He is revered. He is not like us.
- 7:02He's not someone that we demand things from.
- 7:04He is the one that we request things from and he is our
- 7:08Father. He is timely disposed towards us
- 7:12in a familial, chosen, loving relationship, but we ought to
- 7:17respect our God, who is not one of us earth dwellers.
- 7:21He is the one in heaven. So our Father in heaven, he says
- 7:24your name, be honored as holy. That's what's contained in that
- 7:29word, hallowed. It's got what is most important
- 7:35in my life and in our world is the lifting up of God and
- 7:40recognizing him for who he is. He is perfect, He is set apart.
- 7:46He is unlike us in all of the best ways and so he needs to be
- 7:52honored as holy. As we mentioned from Isaiah 6,
- 7:56the angels surrounding the throne don't fly around God
- 7:59saying love, love, love, though God is love as we would read in
- 8:03first John believe four and verse 8.
- 8:07They circle the throne saying holy, holy, holy.
- 8:12And so may we enter into that cry of the angels to proclaim
- 8:18that God is holy. And if he is holy and set apart,
- 8:22then that means that he is worthy and deserving of our
- 8:26worship. So in the way that you and I
- 8:28live, may we honor God as holy. May he be set apart in our
- 8:33hearts. We can even read this in first
- 8:37Peter chapter 3 and verse #15 where Peter says this in your
- 8:45hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give
- 8:50a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that
- 8:54is in you. So are you living in a way that
- 8:58is reflective of God being holy? And when He says your name, be
- 9:03honored as holy. That is God's authority, His
- 9:08will being obeyed. When we come to God, we
- 9:12recognize you are my Father. You have made this family.
- 9:16You are worthy of respect. And so because I have accepted
- 9:23your name, your authority, your will, may it be lived out
- 9:27through the way that I live, would you help me to be holy as
- 9:30you are holy, that people would look at me and think well of
- 9:34God, his reputation, his name would be lifted up.
- 9:38And that begins with the way that we treat others, talk about
- 9:44God, interact with one another. That's all important there.
- 9:48Verse #10 your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it
- 9:53is in heaven. God, we need you to be in
- 9:56charge. I don't need to be in charge.
- 9:59The Republicans or the Democrats or whatever country you're
- 10:02you're watching from. Just saw the other day we have
- 10:05someone watching from South Africa #1 great to hear from
- 10:09you. Whatever country you're in.
- 10:10We don't need our kingdoms, our nations, but we're making a mess
- 10:14of things. What we need is God's Kingdom.
- 10:17And so may we ask for his rule to come and for his will to be
- 10:21accomplished on earth as it is in heaven.
- 10:24Live Today like you will one day live in the Kingdom of God.
- 10:28Live with these Kingdom ethics in mind, the fruit of the
- 10:33Spirit, or as you read through the Sermon on the Mount.
- 10:35This is the way that you are to live in relation to others.
- 10:40And so that means change your actions and your attitudes as
- 10:47the Holy Spirit like convicts you, empowers you, live like you
- 10:53are a citizen of the Kingdom of heaven.
- 10:56Praying for God's Kingdom to come and his will to be done on
- 10:59earth begins in our hearts. I love there's a, a version of
- 11:05the Lord's Prayer put to music that Brian Fowler and Matt Maher
- 11:11put together and they, they have the I forget how the structure
- 11:16of the song goes. It's either the course of the
- 11:18verse goes, Father, let your Kingdom come, Father me, your
- 11:21will be done on earth as in heaven right here in my heart.
- 11:27And I, I just love the way that they phrase that.
- 11:30Lord, let it begin in me and spill out to others.
- 11:34Verse #11 Give us today Our Daily Bread, just like in the
- 11:40wilderness as the children of Israel were wandering, and every
- 11:45day the manna would come that that bread of the day, bread of
- 11:50the presence would be there. And So what Jesus instructs us
- 11:55to pray for is God give us what we need today.
- 11:59I could be like, oh listen, God give me everything that I need
- 12:02for the next 100 years and just, you know, drop a Scrooge Mcduck
- 12:06size bag of gold coins on my porch.
- 12:11I could pray for that. But what Jesus instructs me to
- 12:13pray for is pray for the needs that I have today.
- 12:17That means day by day, moment by moment, we will encounter need
- 12:22in this life. But Jesus says that this is a
- 12:25reason for us to pray and to ask God every single day to show us
- 12:31his provision. And he delights to do that.
- 12:34And that's something that you can read all the way through
- 12:36Scripture. God rarely in Scripture talks
- 12:41about us like about him giving us stockpiled provisions.
- 12:47He gives us day by day what we need.
- 12:49Now if God has blessed you and you are able to have what you
- 12:53need for the next, you know, 1000 years, wonderful, praise
- 12:56the Lord for his wonderful gift that he has given you.
- 12:59Also consider giving some away to others that do not have give
- 13:03some away to some of the needy within your body of believers.
- 13:09That would be a good thing to do.
- 13:11But I, I think you're praying for our daily provisions.
- 13:14Our Daily Bread is a wonderful reminder #12 forgive us our
- 13:19debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.
- 13:24May we be faithful if we want God to forgive us every single
- 13:29day. May we remember that we cannot
- 13:33live in defiance of God and expect that God then will
- 13:39respond to our request for forgiveness affirmatively.
- 13:43If you will. You can't stiff arm God in pride
- 13:47and say no, I will not obey your word to forgive other people,
- 13:51but also I want you to forgive me.
- 13:53If I'm stiff arming God and refusing to obey Him, I am
- 13:58pushing Him away through my pride, and He cannot.
- 14:03He cannot forgive us until we forgive others.
- 14:07This is what we would read in verses 14 and 15.
- 14:10For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father
- 14:13will forgive you as well. But if you don't forgive others,
- 14:16your Father will not forgive your offenses.
- 14:19And if you're like, well, listen, how, how does this work?
- 14:22I, I just want God to forgive me without me forgiving other
- 14:25people. Sorry, Scripture tells us
- 14:27otherwise. We're told in Ephesians 432, be
- 14:31kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another,
- 14:33just as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you, and so you for
- 14:38Jesus's sake can forgive the sins and offenses of others as
- 14:43well. Then verse #13 and do not bring
- 14:46us, don't lead us into temptation, but deliver us from
- 14:50the evil one. This temptation, it's the moment
- 14:53of testing. It's Abraham on the mountain
- 14:57with Isaac, knife raised, ready to strike.
- 15:01It is Adam and Eve in the garden being confronted by the evil 1,
- 15:06the serpent who wants them to turn.
- 15:09They're back on God. It is Job losing everything and
- 15:13hearing his wife say listen jar, are you still retaining your
- 15:17integrity? Curse God and die here.
- 15:20We can pray. God, don't lead me into the
- 15:23moments of the test. But if I do have to enter into
- 15:27this time of temptation, God deliver me from the evil one,
- 15:31that Satan would not win the victory, that God would reign,
- 15:37he his will would be accomplished, that we would find
- 15:41victory in Jesus. And then as time went on, after
- 15:49this portion of scripture was written, it was very common to
- 15:53say a doxology, a praise after you read this portion of
- 15:59scripture. And eventually some scribes
- 16:02started adding those doxologies that churches would say after
- 16:07they prayed this prayer, they would insert it into the text.
- 16:11And so that's where you would have the more common ending that
- 16:14you may know if you grew up in a more liturgical church.
- 16:18Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
- 16:23Amen. Because our response to what we
- 16:26read here of God that cares about us, that is exalted, that
- 16:31wants his will and his Kingdom to come on earth, this earth
- 16:35that we've ruined through our sin, the one who forgives us,
- 16:39the one who can deliver us from either the moment of testing or
- 16:44when we're tested, can deliver us from the evil one.
- 16:47This God is the one who deserves the Kingdom and the power and
- 16:51the glory forever. Amen.
- 16:54And I hope that's even as you encounter your day today, that
- 16:59this would be your heart and your prayer.
- 17:03God, you love me. You have a plan for me.
- 17:07You have people that I'm going to interact with.
- 17:10Sometimes they'll feel me. And my call is to forgive them
- 17:14as you forgive me. And Lord, I need you to provide
- 17:18for my needs each and every day, each and every moment.
- 17:22And then, Lord, as I navigate through all of that, help me to
- 17:29remember that you can deliver me from temptation and you are
- 17:33worthy of everything that I can bring you.
- 17:37I hope that the Lord's Prayer has been encouragement to you
- 17:40today. This is a little longer episode
- 17:41than I was going for, but it's a fantastic portion of Scripture,
- 17:45so you can't really be mad at me.
- 17:47Thanks for tuning in and we will finish out, I believe, our week
- 17:52of a break from Isaiah with the final portion of Scripture that
- 17:59I have set aside as some of my favorites.
