Transcript
- 0:16All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:18football Friday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:21Trent Condon and Ken Miller get it going for the next couple of
- 0:25hours as we return to Iowa based programming AT2O clock off the
- 0:29bench. The boys by the way in are in
- 0:31Ames Rally House for Sean and Lucas today.
- 0:35They're at the Rally House and Ames from 2:00 until 5:00.
- 0:38That's where they're at every Iowa State home football game
- 0:41weekend. Rally House in Ames.
- 0:43Trent Condon and Ken Miller with you here until 2:00.
- 0:46Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:48We will talk Iowa State with the voice of Iowa State, John
- 0:51Walters, our first guest today. He'll join us at about 12:25.
- 0:55We'll preview the Arizona State Gameboy.
- 0:58You see Sam Levitt now out for the year.
- 1:00Oh, that's a blow. Yeah, Eddie, a little inkling
- 1:03and I'm sure there's plenty of cycling.
- 1:04Well, Nate, yeah, there's no maybe here.
- 1:06No, it's off the table. He's done for the year now.
- 1:09I get it though. I mean, it's such a drop off
- 1:11between him and Sims, it really is.
- 1:13So we'll talk to John Walters about football.
- 1:15We'll sprinkle in some basketball as well when The
- 1:18Voice joins us at 12:25. Then Tom Cakehard, we'll talk
- 1:21Hawkeye related topics with Tom. He will join us at 12:40, kind
- 1:25of speculate as how the rest of the football season was.
- 1:28Go get some basketball in there as well with Tom. 1:00 Bama,
- 1:31Bob, Trent and I have way too many games than we'll ever get
- 1:35through on the list of games that we hope to opine on today.
- 1:37We'll do that at 1:00. And then at 1:30, we'll head to
- 1:40Las Vegas, catch up with her friend Mike Palm, the Vice
- 1:43President of Operations at Circus Sports will go behind the
- 1:47counter with Mike Serkis. I'm guessing a lot of sports
- 1:50book operators are rooting for the Blue Jays to get this bad
- 1:54boy over tonight. And as World Series shifts, Game
- 1:586 winner go home for the Dodgers.
- 2:00They're not going anywhere, Trent.
- 2:02I think that they win tonight behind Yamamoto.
- 2:04And the reason I say that for a couple of reasons.
- 2:06First of all, Yamamoto. And they can't be as bad as far,
- 2:10I mean that 4 pass balls. 4 pass balls.
- 2:13On what night was it? Wednesday?
- 2:15Wednesday night, the Oscar Hernandez turns a single into a
- 2:20triple. You know, as that ball gets past
- 2:22him as Varshall's rounding the bases.
- 2:24They were their own worst enemies, and I got to think
- 2:27that's going to happen. I also think that the rest is
- 2:29going to do wonders for Shohei Otani because he was on fumes.
- 2:33Yeah, yeah, you could day off, even with the long road trip
- 2:36heading back to Toronto. He needed that.
- 2:39We talked about him trying to steal a base.
- 2:41He saw that when he got on right away.
- 2:43What is that? Game five and there's nothing
- 2:45there. I took a couple of bluff steps
- 2:47and that was it. Now he's also pitching and maybe
- 2:50that was something to try to conserve as much energy energy
- 2:52as possible. Do you go back to the same game
- 2:55plan you had though? Just don't give him anything to
- 2:59hit. I would, yeah, I would.
- 3:00Yep, I absolutely would. That would be how if I was John
- 3:04Schneider High. I will handle it.
- 3:06Do you have a feel for this game tonight?
- 3:07It's just not my, you know, negative.
- 3:09My team's going to lose. That's not how I'm approaching
- 3:12this. I I really believe that the
- 3:14Dodgers will win tonight and then all bets are off tomorrow.
- 3:18I like Gausman. I do too, I like him a lot.
- 3:21Now. I like Yamamoto better.
- 3:24If you would have told me certainly back 1/2 week ago
- 3:27before the three games in LA, that I would get the Dodgers in
- 3:31a Game 6. Yamamoto.
- 3:33Yamamoto, with what we've seen at him against Gausman and all I
- 3:36get is plus 123I, I, I can't take that price with the Blue
- 3:42Jays. I would have to have my number
- 3:44said plus 141 or better is when it'd be bet on and that's not
- 3:48even close to that. So if I had to make a play, it'd
- 3:50be on the Dodgers right now. I I like the Blue Jays.
- 3:54I just don't like him at the price in the market, right?
- 3:55Now, no, I'm with you. How long can bets be as bad as
- 3:59he has been in the batter's box? I just I refuse to believe that
- 4:03this is the Mookie bets. We'll see.
- 4:05I think it I think it's bodes well for the Dodgers tonight.
- 4:08And then we go to Game 7 tomorrow night and I have no
- 4:12idea who's going to start. They haven't named, they haven't
- 4:14hinted. I'm guessing, you know, the
- 4:17Dodgers are playing that close to the vest that they don't want
- 4:19to, you know, bullet well, they've already named their
- 4:21starter, you know, get a little ahead of themselves.
- 4:24Got a game to win here tonight. I don't know.
- 4:26I don't know if that's behind it or what's behind it, but we'll
- 4:28see. Going to be a fascinating game
- 4:30tonight. And there's really, with the
- 4:32exception of, I mean, we, you guys have high school football
- 4:36tonight, Where are you going to be?
- 4:38I'm going to be out of Valley Prairie.
- 4:40Kyle Knox Prairie Hawks come to town to take on the tigers and a
- 4:45special Halloween edition, as it'll be the black and orange
- 4:48against the black and orange. Love it and you can hear that
- 4:50game on the Bull, our sister station, 96 point. 7.
- 4:54Nope. 9. Yep, 96.9.
- 4:56Also going to be on the call with CISN.
- 4:58So if you're watching the broadcast tonight and going to
- 5:01be up in the booth tonight with Dominic Daphne, former Valley
- 5:04star, played in the NFL. I remember that.
- 5:07And now trying to work the Packers, right?
- 5:09Yes, he was with the Packers and now getting into the media game
- 5:12a little bit. He's been doing a number of
- 5:13Valley games. He's a Valley grad and going to
- 5:16be doing the game with him this evening.
- 5:17That's awesome. How long has he been out of the
- 5:19league? This is I, this is the first
- 5:21kind of full year. Maybe this is the first year
- 5:23that things all right now it's time.
- 5:25But a real job. Got a cup, got a cup of tea and
- 5:29good guy. I'm excited to work with him
- 5:30this evening. Good stuff.
- 5:31And of course, the crew will be here.
- 5:33Joe Stacy and company, they will have football Friday night.
- 5:36They'll be fanned out everywhere.
- 5:38This will be the penultimate show for them as they have the
- 5:40quarterfinals next week before the scene shifts to the Dome and
- 5:44the way we go for that. All right, so that's how we kind
- 5:47of see the at least I see game number six tonight.
- 5:51Let's get to what we saw last night.
- 5:52And this was just a an awful Dolphins football team.
- 5:55What has happened to Miami Dolphins?
- 5:58And there's going to be no change at the head coaching
- 6:01position. They fired the general manager
- 6:02today. I get it.
- 6:03They're they're going to let him finish out the year, finish out
- 6:07the season. The new GM will then be
- 6:09entrusted to hire a new coach and get an entirely new regime.
- 6:12But at this point, if you're a Dolphins fan, you have to be
- 6:15wondering what your team is going to look like come Tuesday.
- 6:18And I'm not sure what I mean. Obviously there are some parts
- 6:20to that team that would be that would find that could find their
- 6:25way to other teams rosters, but that is bad, bad football.
- 6:29And I'm not sure too is ever going to be the quarterback that
- 6:32many of them. I mean, Justin Herbert went
- 6:34after Tua. I I know they get a lot wrong.
- 6:36It's it's the draft is imperfect project.
- 6:40But man, oh man, he just looks broken back there.
- 6:42And I just wonder if it's his, all his concussions that he's
- 6:45had. It's kind of an easy leap to
- 6:47make. You know, when we've seen this
- 6:48guy and how diminished he is. Remember this team two years ago
- 6:51was outscoring everybody. They're putting 70 on the.
- 6:53Board didn't They score 70 against Denver.
- 6:55Is it? Yes, it was against Denver.
- 6:57Yes. This team was the talk of the
- 7:00league and Mike Daniel and looking goofy over there.
- 7:03But hey, he's got this team and here we are today.
- 7:06He is a dead coach, dead coach Walker, play out this string.
- 7:10You know, one guy I was wondering about is watching a
- 7:12chain. He's good, isn't he?
- 7:14He's a good player. You know, we've heard so much in
- 7:16the connections with Bruce Hall, and I know it's also our market.
- 7:19Bruce Hall being an Iowa State guy, he's from that area.
- 7:22A ton of things make sense. But if that's off the table or
- 7:25they're asking too much a chain in that Kansas City offense, you
- 7:30talk about something that would pop.
- 7:31Well, that's what that's to me. Once Simmons comes back for the
- 7:36Chiefs, they're they're they're a glare, not glaring weakness.
- 7:41But the one area that could use shoring up to me is the running
- 7:44back position. I really like and we've talked a
- 7:47lot about Burchard Smith. I think there's is he though, a
- 7:50between the tackles, certainly for this year he's not that.
- 7:54Guy, isn't he you? Like Smith, there's something
- 7:56special there and with the Kansas City and the way that
- 7:58they're built, I think he can be a really special back.
- 8:01A guy that, you know, catches 70 balls out of the backfield, runs
- 8:04for 800 yards, averages, you know, 5 1/2 yards per carry.
- 8:06And in a more limited role, I don't think he's rushing for
- 8:091500 yards or anything like that, but he's more of a gadget
- 8:12kind of guy. But he works for with what they
- 8:15are and and I like the upside of him.
- 8:17But for this season, I think they need more.
- 8:19They need something there. They've got, I mean, obviously
- 8:21the receivers are as good as they got.
- 8:23All that speed that they've got now.
- 8:25Kelsey, well, nowhere near what he once was.
- 8:28He's still, he's still a good tight end.
- 8:30He gets behind you, you forget about him.
- 8:32The defence is solid, kicking games are solid and obviously
- 8:35Andy Reid's an elite head. Coach and this might be the best
- 8:38defence that they've had in this run, might be when they hit into
- 8:40consideration when they're healthy.
- 8:42Yep, this defence is special and you can't say that about
- 8:47Buffalo. You can't say that.
- 8:49About Do you have an opinion on the game or are you going to
- 8:51make that part of your pick I. Won't I would lead in Kansas
- 8:54City. I would, but it's just a lean.
- 8:57That's a that's a heck of a late afternoon time slot game.
- 9:00What's it going up against? It has to be one of the few in
- 9:03that in that 320. 5 So there's just three games.
- 9:06Yeah, there's there's two other games that are.
- 9:08PU yes. Jaguars, Raiders and Saints
- 9:11Rams. Good God.
- 9:13So if you're in the Las Vegas market, obviously you're stuck
- 9:15with that and likewise with LA, the Saints and the Rams.
- 9:20But yeah, So what do we get off? That'll be our late game on on
- 9:25CBS is they have the double header.
- 9:27Fox has to give us Minnesota Detroit, right?
- 9:30Fox single in our market. Now this is not all markets, so
- 9:35we will help out the whole state of Iowa.
- 9:36It's not, so it's not. Across the board?
- 9:38Not across the board. In Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and
- 9:42Quad Cities markets. You will be served up Carolina
- 9:45Green Bay. Come on while our friends, are
- 9:48you kidding me out? West in Sioux City they will be
- 9:52Minnesota Detroit along with my friends up in North Central Iowa
- 9:56also will get Minnesota Detroit. Which is the game that the
- 9:59entire state should be. Getting yes, absolutely.
- 10:01What? What?
- 10:01What am I missing? I don't know.
- 10:04Two division teams, Vikings, Packers.
- 10:07We've talked about it before. It's splitting hairs, at least
- 10:09in this market. That's a miss.
- 10:11That's a miss. That's a miss.
- 10:13Fox 17 here. Fox 2848 over in Cedar Rapids
- 10:17and the Quad Cities. I don't know who their Fox
- 10:19affiliate is. Regardless, I'm.
- 10:21La Porta, Jack Campbell, David Montgomery are all in that game.
- 10:25Who am I missing And? There are some fringe Lions fans
- 10:29around too, but they're. So are there any Carolina fans?
- 10:32No, the answer is. Absolutely not.
- 10:34It's a divisional Game Boy that's a swing and a missed Fox,
- 10:37that's a big swing. If I knew who was decision, I'd
- 10:40call him. Out used to be Wilson, right?
- 10:41Yeah, used to be. We used to yell at that guy all
- 10:43the time. I don't know who it is now, but
- 10:47man oh man, get your head out of you assuming that it was your
- 10:50choice. Now you might have been force
- 10:52fed right, but if you had to ultimately make the call let
- 10:56somebody else do it because you're embarrassing yourself
- 10:58that's ridiculous. Caroline and green now look I'm
- 11:01not I'm going to turn on my YouTube TV and watch it so we
- 11:05will get the game. But for of those that don't you
- 11:07should have Minnesota, Detroit. Here's the bad news.
- 11:10We don't have it on KXNO this week on Sunday because we've got
- 11:13wild hockey coming up at 2:45. So the conflict we will drop the
- 11:17puck. So sports bars Here's.
- 11:20A A potential swing and a miss in our market.
- 11:24For what? What week?
- 11:26For this one for the early window on CBS.
- 11:28OK, Yeah, we didn't do that, did we?
- 11:30So we will be served up here in the.
- 11:32Way. Here are the choices, right
- 11:34Bears. Bengals, Chargers, Titans.
- 11:37No chance. No chance.
- 11:39Falcons, Patriots. No way.
- 11:41Good game, though. Maybe Niners, Giants, Colts,
- 11:46Steelers. So if there's one local tie,
- 11:51it's the Bears and it's the Bengals, and that's probably
- 11:57what we're getting. Eastern Iowa will.
- 12:00Or Cedar Rapids Quad Cities markets in Eastern Iowa.
- 12:02Yes, you will get that here. So if they're picking the best
- 12:06game, it's I don't like this, it's called Steelers.
- 12:11Yes, and that's what we'll be getting.
- 12:12Yeah. Bad work.
- 12:14Yeah. KCCI Reister, you had to talk to
- 12:16your bosses. You had a chance to show the
- 12:18bears. Change it.
- 12:19Yeah. Fix it.
- 12:20Come on. I know it's not Roy Reister's
- 12:23choice, but no, Scott, you're getting a text.
- 12:26But what's the kids name that moved Jeff to Dubaugh?
- 12:28Maybe he was in charge and they forgot.
- 12:31Yes, been working for like 2 weeks.
- 12:32You can't put this one on him. No, I'm.
- 12:33Just saying maybe he was getting the first side that was part of
- 12:37his duties. And since he's low, I'll just
- 12:40take whatever you want. I'm surprised by that.
- 12:42I have two. I think we had a couple of
- 12:44misses here in the local market. All right, Arizona State and
- 12:47Iowa State. How does Arizona State look?
- 12:49They're they defending conference champions and they
- 12:53had a wonderful running back in scataboo who was just
- 12:58otherworldly at the college game, right?
- 13:00Obviously Sam Levitt. Tyson did not play last year.
- 13:03I don't think he'll play tomorrow.
- 13:06Levitt being out. If Iowa State doesn't win this
- 13:10football game tomorrow, then red flag should go up.
- 13:13Oh, no doubt. Then they're nowhere good, as
- 13:15good as even Cyclone Nation believed that they were.
- 13:19I. Look at this game and what's a
- 13:22realistic game plan for Arizona State?
- 13:24I mean, I, I think they're going guys, they're running back.
- 13:26Brown and I like, you know, the army trains for two.
- 13:29He's decent as a #2 we know Sims can run.
- 13:32We go old school here. This is zone read left, right up
- 13:34the middle. I mean, you're going triple
- 13:35option. Let's Sims try and beat you with
- 13:37his arm. He won't.
- 13:38I think the game plan for Arizona State is we got to run
- 13:40the football 4550 times that. That's what we're going to do.
- 13:43We're going to heat clock. We're going to go that
- 13:45direction. That has to be the path for
- 13:48Arizona State and that's the only path because Jeff Sims
- 13:50throwing the football is not a path.
- 13:52No, it's a path for interceptions.
- 13:53It's a path for awful throws. That's the path that you get
- 13:56with Sims as a QB throwing the ball, as a runner.
- 13:59He is dangerous. So lean into that.
- 14:02That's the game plan. Play up front him.
- 14:04To throw the ball, make him throw the.
- 14:05Ball and make Dominic Orange have to sit out there and if
- 14:07he's going to play and if he's he's going to go well, he can't
- 14:10go for 22 snaps. We're going to run the ball at
- 14:13you all day long and we'll see how depleted Dominic Orange is.
- 14:17If he's able to go what that's going to look like that front
- 14:20and all those linebackers and on and on and on.
- 14:22That has to be the game plan. Will it do it?
- 14:26Who knows, but I think that's the only path for Arizona State.
- 14:28This feels like a get right. It really does.
- 14:32I mean, it's it's setting up very well for them.
- 14:35Get bowl eligibility, then you know what, let the chips fall
- 14:39where they may. I think it's a the longest of
- 14:41long shots that there's still a potential to get back to the
- 14:43conference game, championship game, but all you can do is win
- 14:47the ones in front of me. I know it's cliche, but start
- 14:49tomorrow. Start tomorrow and John Walters,
- 14:52more on Iowa State coming up. We'll get to Tom Cacard on the
- 14:56Hawks as they head into their bye week.
- 14:57Was there an injury, Trent, that you're aware of with Iowa that
- 15:01that this is a bye week that you know, might get whoever this
- 15:07person might be back on the field, 'cause I'm racking my
- 15:09brain, I don't know. I think Bo Stevens, who left
- 15:12early in the day. He did leave early now what you
- 15:14mentioned. He did come back apparently, but
- 15:16limited getting him. You know, dunkers been banged up
- 15:20throughout the year. The offensive line really
- 15:22outside of Lauke and Jones, I think has been pretty banged up
- 15:24throughout the course of this year.
- 15:25So those would be the two big ones.
- 15:27So Stevens and dunker up front. But Stevens.
- 15:29Was the only one that actually missed time out of that, right?
- 15:32And like you said, he did get back in the game.
- 15:35Running back wise, they look to be good there got to see jazzy
- 15:37and Patterson back out there and another I guess week to men now
- 15:41for that yes and now Vanderzee goes from playing what was it 25
- 15:45snaps in the game? Now I'm doubling or making 45.
- 15:48I think that's another way to get there for.
- 15:51Gronowski just to have a week off.
- 15:52Vanami didn't start the game. That's right.
- 15:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:55Michael Burt got his first career start at the tight end
- 15:58position. He large has been banged up too,
- 16:00so there are a number of guys that have not debilitating that
- 16:04they're going to be. Out, but maybe not difference
- 16:06makers, right? Just depth pieces.
- 16:08What's what's Brevin Doll's status?
- 16:10He's been in and out. He was on kickoff team, had to
- 16:18sit out, didn't travel. He's he's been really banked up
- 16:21and he's been that forgotten guy in that running.
- 16:22Back he has, hasn't he? As we see in the ascension of
- 16:25Xavier Williams, of course, what we've seen out of McNeil in the
- 16:27little glimpses that we've got, has he?
- 16:29Played in four games yet, by the way.
- 16:31Well, doll's already, no? Mcdeal.
- 16:33McNeil. I think so, yeah.
- 16:34I think he's played, yeah. Everyone, maybe except for one.
- 16:37So his red shirt has been burned.
- 16:39All right, John Walters, he'll join us next.
- 16:41More on Iowa State. We'll get into the football.
- 16:43We'll get into basketball with John.
- 16:45Before we go to break, however, let's give you an opportunity to
- 16:49win $1000. You can head to KX and o.com.
- 16:52KX and o.com, The pop up box will appear once it does.
- 16:55Type the keyword grand grand at KX and o.com.
- 16:58Your chance to win a grand grand at KX and o.com.
- 17:02Miller and Condon talking sports with you on Des Moines sports
- 17:06station One O 6.3, KX&O and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:16I'm Miller Cohn to 1225, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:20Wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa, grateful that you
- 17:22are, Trent and I take you until 2:00.
- 17:25Let's get John Walters, the voice of Iowa State.
- 17:28He'll be in the booth tomorrow, noon kickoff on the Iowa State
- 17:33Radio Network. They'll get underway, I believe,
- 17:35at 10:00. AM I right, John Walters?
- 17:38You're correct. It's going to be a little bit
- 17:40different for us. Not used to the new picks, but I
- 17:42I kind of like. It I do too.
- 17:44I'm with you. Gives us a little bit different
- 17:46look with noon kickoff speaking a different look.
- 17:48Arizona State's going to have a different look as opposed to the
- 17:51team that you saw last year at the in the in the conference
- 17:54championship game. Obviously, Scatterbooth moved
- 17:56on, but Sam Leavitt, such a heck of a quarterback, such a
- 17:59terrific competitor, and now out for the year, going to be a
- 18:03different Arizona State team that makes the way to Ames,
- 18:06John. Yeah, I would have probably
- 18:08picked them to win the Big 12 Conference, you know, going into
- 18:11the season, based on Scataboo being a huge loss, no question
- 18:16about that. But they brought back pretty
- 18:20much everybody else and a lot of talent on both sides of the
- 18:23ball. And you know, they're still
- 18:26having a Goodyear, but obviously the injuries have hit them just
- 18:29like they've hit Iowa State. And you know, for Levitt and
- 18:31then maybe Tyson to be out tomorrow, we'll see on Tyson.
- 18:35But those are those are your best players, you know, and
- 18:38that's when it's hard. And obviously for Iowa State,
- 18:40it's been their best players. You know, I mean, John says
- 18:43Williams and Jeremiah Cooper reach preseason all Big 12
- 18:46selections and Dom Orange has been in and out of the lineup.
- 18:49He was a preseason all Big 12 pick, but he played real well
- 18:52last week. But, you know, both teams have
- 18:54been hit hard by injuries. Both are still having pretty
- 18:57good years. Not maybe the year they had
- 18:58hoped for in terms of competing for the Big 12 championship.
- 19:01But actually, Arizona State's still very much in it because
- 19:04they're such schedule softens and they could certainly get
- 19:08into a tiebreaker. And so I'm sure they still feel
- 19:11like they have a pretty good shot.
- 19:13And I was statements win out and then hope that there's carnage
- 19:17that happens. And in this league you just
- 19:18never know as week to week it is a different kind of league.
- 19:22You know, going through this now for the second year with the
- 19:24team team league, the newbies in there, you got a nationwide
- 19:28conference that goes along with it and and all these teams kind
- 19:31of playing on the same level. Is is it been enjoyable for you
- 19:34in just this week to week, not just watching Iowa State, but
- 19:37seeing what's happening in this conference football wise?
- 19:39Is this is as wide open and as entertaining of a race year
- 19:43after year as as maybe we get an old college football.
- 19:46No, I think that's true. It it is the most entertaining
- 19:49and unpredictable conference thing, you know, still here we
- 19:52are in November, right? And almost, and you can still
- 19:56throw a blanket over 5 or 6 teams and say they got a chance
- 19:59to get to the Big 12 championship game, a legitimate
- 20:01chance. And so, yeah, it's fun when it's
- 20:04wide open and a great race. And, you know, even a team like
- 20:09TCU that you know, probably isn't going to get there, that
- 20:12they are on any day capable of rising up and beating somebody.
- 20:15And there's so many teams in this league that are in that
- 20:18category and so. I love it.
- 20:21I do think it's very entertaining so many close games
- 20:25that come right down to the final minutes.
- 20:27And it is one of those leagues. I call it the you know, don't
- 20:32put down your remote league because you know you're sitting
- 20:35there, you come across one of these games and you're usually
- 20:38going to stop right there when you're channel surfing because
- 20:41there's usually some drama and some entry coming down the
- 20:43stretch these games and I really enjoy that.
- 20:45I love watching all the games across the league and as you
- 20:48mentioned with the time zones, you know you you can watch it
- 20:50from the minute you wake up in the morning.
- 20:52So you go to bed at night and and be entertained by Big 12
- 20:55football and I think it is entertaining.
- 20:57Will McLaughlin, John, the start that he was having gets BYU is
- 21:00unfortunate. He got a little bit banged up
- 21:02and now I'm not sure whether he'll play or not tomorrow.
- 21:05But boy, McLaughlin was art to a start against BYUABYU team that
- 21:09struggled early, got it going late.
- 21:10But McLaughlin may be a big reason for those early
- 21:13struggles. He was all over the field when
- 21:14he was in there. He was and and we've been
- 21:17waiting to see that Will McLaughlin, you know, and, and
- 21:20to get that kind of pass rush and to have a couple sacks
- 21:24within a few minutes, that was just awesome and unfortunately
- 21:27got hurt on the second stack. Hopefully he'll be able to get
- 21:30out there and play tomorrow because he really does bring
- 21:32something to the table. He's a dynamic player that can
- 21:35get to the quarterback and create some havoc.
- 21:37And I was state needs to be able to create more havoc with her
- 21:40defense. And obviously you're trying to,
- 21:42you know, bandage up some of the spots on the back end where
- 21:45you've got to play really, really the young guys.
- 21:47But you know, if you can get to the quarterback and get a little
- 21:49bit of pressure, it certainly opens up the possibility of
- 21:52creating a turnover. And something I was states
- 21:54struggled to do, they've only forced 1 turnover in the last
- 21:57three games. And I think they've got to get
- 21:58back to, you know, forcing one or two a game.
- 22:01It really would give their offense a short field and take
- 22:05some pressure off them if the defense is able to force some
- 22:07turnover. So I'm hopeful that I would say
- 22:10will be able to force a turnover to tomorrow against them and
- 22:14Arizona State. We talked about it earlier,
- 22:16they're going to run the football.
- 22:17How about the Iowa State running game, the return of Carson
- 22:19Hansen? You know, him and Abu are just
- 22:22completely different type of guys.
- 22:23I mean, the way that they run, the way that they're built, you
- 22:25got the East West, it's the Thunder lightning and we've seen
- 22:28that plenty of times in the past.
- 22:29Just getting Hansen back there, not just what a good running
- 22:31back he is, but having that compliment to Abu, Sama Reelix
- 22:35feels like it. It's taking this run game to
- 22:36another level. I love where the Iowa state-run
- 22:39game is right now, and that sounds funny to say with a
- 22:42three-game losing streak, but in those three games I would say
- 22:45it's averaged 196 rushing yards a game.
- 22:47So that hasn't been the problem. And Abu Sama is running it with
- 22:51authority. Carson Hansen's running it with
- 22:53authority in the offensive line is really run blocking better
- 22:57than we've seen in many years. And I think Ryan Clinton's done
- 23:00a tremendous job with that group and they're a veteran group.
- 23:03You know, they've got 3 seniors on that offensive line and so
- 23:07it's not a total shock. They're doing some good things.
- 23:10But you know, Trevor Bohr, I think that guard really has made
- 23:14a difference since he came back from injury in that rush
- 23:17offense. And, and that's something that
- 23:20you can kind of hang your hat on.
- 23:21So I'm real hopeful that Iowa State will be able to run the
- 23:23football well tomorrow. I take a little pressure off
- 23:25Rocco back and ball control a little bit.
- 23:29I think Arizona State, as you mentioned, is going to be trying
- 23:31to do the exact same thing. Sims has thrown 31 passes,
- 23:35touchdown passes in his career. So it's not like he's he can't
- 23:38throw and he has a ton of experience, but he's definitely
- 23:42a run first type of thought as far as the defensive
- 23:44coordinator. I think John Haycock will look
- 23:46at him as a run first threat. And so, you know, can Iowa State
- 23:50slow that run game down? They have a very good running
- 23:52back in Brown. You know what?
- 23:54Maybe hold him under 150 yards rushing like he did against BYU.
- 23:57I thought Iowa State did a ton of things well against BYU and
- 24:01really came out of the Kate great.
- 24:02And I thought they were well on their way to a terrific win.
- 24:05But you can't lose the turnover battle for nothing again
- 24:08tomorrow and and expect to win. So that's really what it comes
- 24:11down to. But I think the run game helps
- 24:13you in that effort to ball control a little bit.
- 24:15John Walters is our guest. John, I don't want to put you on
- 24:18the spot. I'm going to ask you this.
- 24:19BYU and Cincinnati, they're both 5 and O Iowa State has played
- 24:23both of them. Of the two, is there one that's
- 24:26more likely to win a Big 12 championship?
- 24:28Bachmeier looked unbelievable. Sores being been great.
- 24:32Where? Where are you as far as the two
- 24:33unbeaten teams in the conference?
- 24:37Yeah, they're they're definitely in contention along with Texas
- 24:39Tech and and a handful of other teams to certainly Houston has
- 24:43been playing great too. I think if I had to pick between
- 24:48those two, I'd pick BYU over Cincinnati, but not by its own.
- 24:52Cincinnati's really kind of won me over here in the last few
- 24:54weeks. I, when I was state lost to him.
- 24:57I wasn't sure that they were that great, but they've proven
- 25:01to have done a really good job since then and they continue to
- 25:05run the football really well. Sorsby's having a great season,
- 25:09but I like that BYU team and I think Kwani Sataki really has
- 25:13something going there. And they seem to be one of those
- 25:16teams that takes advantage of others mistakes and that's what
- 25:19they did. I mean, you know, I would say
- 25:21made the mistakes, but BYU was there to take advantage of it
- 25:24each time and they won points off turnover 17.
- 25:26Nothing, you know, in a 14 point win, that's a pretty big deal.
- 25:29So I like the way BIBYU has kind of been opportunistic.
- 25:33I like their defense, and Bachmeier has proven to be a
- 25:36really good. I mean, what he's doing as a
- 25:39freshman quarterback is really, really impressive.
- 25:41Yeah, he's going to be, he's going to be a handful, John, in
- 25:43this conference in the years ahead.
- 25:45John, we're at the crossover season.
- 25:47Love this time of year. College basketball officially
- 25:49starts next week. Couple of exhibition games
- 25:52already under the belt for the Cyclone men.
- 25:55It's a busy time. I know for you there's sometimes
- 25:57that you have to miss games because of what's going on a
- 25:59football, basketball wise, but you look at this group but a lot
- 26:03of intriguing freshmen, Phil said.
- 26:05A little bit. Tori has kind of been the talk
- 26:06here of these last couple of weeks, but he's not alone.
- 26:09Tell us a little bit about those youngsters and what you've
- 26:11learned here as they get ready for the start of the year.
- 26:14Yeah, I really encouraged by the freshman.
- 26:16You know, I know Jamari and Bateman has struggled.
- 26:18He's over 7 from the floor and the two exhibitions, but he'll
- 26:21break out of it. I mean, I've seen too many
- 26:22practices where he's been really good to think that he won't be
- 26:26good. Now.
- 26:26It might take a little while, but Torre has been just
- 26:29tremendous and, you know, he's such a aggressive defender.
- 26:33And I think when you get Torre and Lipsy and Bateman all in
- 26:38there, I think Iowa State's going to be able to create a lot
- 26:41of turnovers. They had 14 steals against
- 26:43Northwestern and you know, the offense isn't perfect, but if
- 26:48you can get 10 or 12 points a game off run outs from that
- 26:51defense, it really puts you in a good spot.
- 26:53So I think this is going to be one of those kind of typical TJ
- 26:56Otzelberger teams that's really going to ball pressure and get
- 26:59out and transition and run. They're going to be a lot of fun
- 27:02to watch and, and I think those freshmen are going to be a big
- 27:04part of it. Dominique Dominic has played a
- 27:07he is going to be a very good player at Iowa State and he's
- 27:12just very talented around the basket, does a lot of really
- 27:15good things. And I think over the course of
- 27:17the season you'll see his role increase and he's going to be a
- 27:20very good player this year. But it'll probably take a little
- 27:22while for both him and Bateman to really make a huge
- 27:25contribution. Love what Dominic Nelson did the
- 27:28other day, really looked good and he's an energy guy, you
- 27:32know, and you love having those energy guys off the bench.
- 27:34I've State had that with Rob Jones.
- 27:37They headed in a different way with Curtis Jones and I think
- 27:40they found another energy guy off the bench, Dominic Nelson.
- 27:42So I like this team a lot and I I think it's going to be a lot
- 27:46of fun to watch. They're not going to be perfect,
- 27:48but there might be a bump in the road along the way.
- 27:51But that's not not unusual with the schedule they're going to
- 27:55face. They're going to face some
- 27:55really good teams out of Vegas. They're going to face
- 27:58Mississippi State here in about a week.
- 28:00So they'll get tested plenty and I think they'll be ready for it.
- 28:04I'm excited about this season. Vegas is Saint John's and
- 28:07Creighton correct? Most of the two we know for
- 28:10sure. The third team, that'll probably
- 28:11be a pretty good team. There's eighteen teams out there
- 28:15and they're all pretty good. So you're going to get 3 really
- 28:18impressive games out in Vegas, plus Iowa, plus, you know,
- 28:21Mississippi State plus Purdue. So it's a good non conference.
- 28:25Schedule, I'll see. Plus Purdue.
- 28:28Yeah, that Dick gets a little. Deep there, yeah.
- 28:32Good stuff, John. Thanks for doing this.
- 28:33Appreciate it. John Walters, we'll talk to you
- 28:35down the road. Thanks, John.
- 28:37Thanks guys. And I, I apologize on the behalf
- 28:40of the people of Story County for getting in the left lane.
- 28:45See you later. Goodbye.
- 28:47Take care of John. That's funny.
- 28:49Good for John. Or from a few people on that
- 28:51one. Apparently, you're not alone for
- 28:52your Anthony. Brother, I'm telling you, they
- 28:54think they own the left lane. Get the hell over.
- 28:58That's funny. Well done, John Walters, and
- 29:01more importantly, thank you for listening.
- 29:03We'll take your time out. Tom Caker will join us next.
- 29:05We'll switch from the clones to the Hawks as they get there by
- 29:08week. Oregon's off this week, too.
- 29:11Ducks are off, yes. Ducks are off, too.
- 29:14Oh, it's a big spot. Drinks Hawk conversation next.
- 29:18Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 29:21Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 29:25Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 29:28Trent and Ken with you until 2. Bama.
- 29:30Bob, Trent and I will go around college football.
- 29:32Kick off the one O clock hour. Mike Palm from the Circus Sports
- 29:36out in Las Vegas joins us at 1:30.
- 29:38Our picks. Got any extra college games?
- 29:42Always. Can I borrow 1?
- 29:44Maybe because I but but we're still going head to head.
- 29:47You're worried about those buffoons in the after us.
- 29:49I'm I'm worried about tracking you down.
- 29:52Well, that's well, well and good.
- 29:53I just, I, I'm all for Friday. I've not won a Friday night game
- 29:59and the only game I've got, I kind of like North Carolina
- 30:02tonight. Do you defense is improving?
- 30:04That's exactly where I'm going, but I'm not sure I'm going to
- 30:06end up there. Anyways, let's talk to Tom
- 30:08Caker, hawkeyereport.com Hawks off this week.
- 30:12Tom Trenton, Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 30:14Before we get into football and other topics, etcetera, somebody
- 30:18called me during a break, asked me to ask you.
- 30:20So I will get this out of the Ray White now, right now,
- 30:22because I don't want to forget Lewis and Bourne when it comes
- 30:26to women's basketball recruiting.
- 30:27Where is Jan Jensen and company on Lewis and Bourne?
- 30:31Are they any of them close? Do you feel better about one
- 30:34than the other? Where are you?
- 30:37Probably feel better about Jennica Lewis than I do Jorn,
- 30:41but Jorn's still taking. Bjorn OK, Thank you.
- 30:44Yes, yes, she's still taking visits and Jennica was in last
- 30:51weekend and I I've always felt like she's going to end up in
- 30:54Iowa City. I think it's Iowa and Notre Dame
- 30:56right now for her. Those soon be the top 2.
- 31:02But Bjorn's just, you know, it's hard to read her because she's
- 31:07still taking visits. So but I this is my gut feel but
- 31:12they end up with both yes. I don't think they'll miss on
- 31:17both though, if that makes sense.
- 31:19Does make sense, no doubt. You know, Ken, post something
- 31:22earlier. I want to get your perspective
- 31:24by you're playing such good football.
- 31:25Probably doesn't come at the most opportune time, but some
- 31:28guys banged up. We saw both Stevens leave the
- 31:30game. I know dunker's kind of been
- 31:32dealing with some things throughout the course of the
- 31:33year injury wise. Is there anybody else health
- 31:36wise getting the back and maybe this bye week does come at a
- 31:39good time. I'll force some guys that are
- 31:41injured. Any names pop into your head?
- 31:44You know, the one thing that's interesting, interesting to me
- 31:47is when Jaden Harrell gets fully healthy and I, I don't think
- 31:54he's that far away from being fully healthy and he may be
- 31:56fully healthy by next week. Does he get his job?
- 32:00Back or or or is. Or is Wally Pip in in play?
- 32:05You know, and it's perfect. That's for us old people.
- 32:10We're making Wally Pip references.
- 32:11Yeah. Montgomery's not Lou Gehrig.
- 32:14No, but. Feels like he has been an
- 32:16upgrade from what we've seen from Harold.
- 32:17Yeah, yeah. And.
- 32:19What about Cam bug? Well, and the defense is playing
- 32:21better. Tom, I think the team is
- 32:25improving. I really do.
- 32:26And it's a fair team. So here we are.
- 32:30I would have, you know, middle of September, somebody was look,
- 32:33the Hawks just have everything still in front of him when we
- 32:35turn to calendar November. I said you're nuts.
- 32:38There's no way in hell this team, this group, you mean to
- 32:41tell me no way. Well, I was wrong or would have
- 32:43been wrong, Tom, because they're still look, the USC game is
- 32:47going to be difficult, right? I'm not saying it's going to
- 32:49happen, but it's still there in front of them and the team, as
- 32:52you mentioned, the defense getting better.
- 32:54I think the entire team is getting better, Tom.
- 32:58I do too. I think they're just they're
- 33:00it's a classic parents team. This team reminds me so much of
- 33:05minus, you know, heaven if they would have had Caleb Johnson to
- 33:09fill in the Sean Green role reminds me so much of that O
- 33:13eight team where you had just a lot of new guys that were in
- 33:16different roles and, you know, they kind of stumbled out of the
- 33:20gate and had a couple losses and and then they by by the middle
- 33:27of the year and on the way to the end, they were playing as
- 33:30well as anybody in the country that, you know, they were just
- 33:33really playing at a high level. And it almost feels like this
- 33:37team is a mirror image of that in some ways, that they've just,
- 33:41they figured things out, they've come together, they've
- 33:43coalesced, and now they're really who are playing their
- 33:48best ball right now. Playing at a high level Oregon
- 33:51will come to town. We'll talk more about that game
- 33:53next week but I mentioned it yesterday one of the most
- 33:56befuddling controversies I've ever seen from apparently a very
- 33:59thin skinned fan base out there in the Pacific Northwest upset
- 34:03it Phil Parker's comments saying that they're well funded to
- 34:06equate this to what Mike Gundy was talking about before the
- 34:09game against Oklahoma State is just absolutely crazy.
- 34:12You deal with everybody in your guys's network at on three.
- 34:15Are Oregon people just that dumb?
- 34:16Are they that weird? What's going down there?
- 34:18With the Ducks, I think some other places have made that
- 34:22comment or other coaches or somebody's made some other
- 34:26comments to them. And so they've gotten
- 34:27extraordinarily thin skinned about it.
- 34:31And you know, it's it's interesting.
- 34:35Just I was like, that's what you're going to get upset about.
- 34:38You know, after he said all kinds of glowing things about
- 34:44about the Ducks and about the program and you know, kind of
- 34:47started out Dan Lanning and the whole bit.
- 34:50I mean, he's going to and they are well funded.
- 34:53Guess what? And guess what, if if Iowa was
- 34:57in that situation where they had we're well funded like that,
- 35:02Iowa fans will be saying you're damn right we are.
- 35:05We're proud of it and we're happy about it.
- 35:07We love, we love our Phil Knight or whoever who it would have
- 35:10been that that did that. You know, why not?
- 35:14That's it's part of the game. And they look like it's an
- 35:16insult, like, oh, we're not good.
- 35:19We're just well funded now. You got your, you can afford to
- 35:22get good players and that's part of the game.
- 35:26Who's the best team in the Big 10?
- 35:27Tom, Are you convinced it's Ohio State?
- 35:29I'm. Not really.
- 35:33I'm not either. I'm done doubting Signeti.
- 35:35Yeah, me too. He's the bully.
- 35:38Yep. You know, he's just.
- 35:41He is, yeah. He just, he goes out and just
- 35:48demolishes everything in front of him.
- 35:50Yeah. And I was giving him the best
- 35:52game. Iowa should have beat.
- 35:53Yes. Yes, let's be honest.
- 35:55They should have beaten them. If Gronowski doesn't get hurt,
- 35:58they probably win that game. Right.
- 36:00And screen pass. Who's now your #3 quarterback,
- 36:05right? Exactly.
- 36:07Yeah, because, you know, and Tim Lester said it after the bye
- 36:10week, that's a touchdown if he believes it.
- 36:13Because Logan Jones and and one of his running mates, one of his
- 36:17other offensive lineman, were clearing the path.
- 36:19They were looking for somebody to block and there wasn't
- 36:21anybody. Yeah, it was that and and I'm
- 36:24sure look at the all 22 where where he could see what was in
- 36:28front of that play and there was nothing there.
- 36:33Nothing apparently. And and yeah, just think about
- 36:37that for a second where Iowa would be.
- 36:39Unbeaten in the Big 10, yes. And we'd be having a lot
- 36:43different conversation, Tom, out of that group.
- 36:45Iowa, we know, has to run the table to be a playoff team.
- 36:48Michigan has to run the table. That means beating Ohio State at
- 36:51the end of the year. USC has to run the table.
- 36:53It starts this week against Nebraska, beating Iowa and of
- 36:56course, the UCLA at the end. Washington still has a path
- 36:59here. Of that group teams Washington,
- 37:01USC, Michigan, Iowa who do give the best chance of running the
- 37:05table and becoming potentially that 4th College Football
- 37:08Playoff team. A great question.
- 37:11Have to look at the schedules. I know USC has to play Oregon
- 37:14yet, too, I think. So that's a that's a stumbling
- 37:18block for them. Perhaps, you know, it might be
- 37:22Michigan. Just do it again.
- 37:26Because they live rent free in the heads of the folks in
- 37:30Columbus right now. And there's I don't care what
- 37:34the Ryan Day can can prance around all he wants.
- 37:37It's, it's rent free right now there.
- 37:41So yeah, I, I would guess Michigan probably got the best
- 37:44shot of running the table and doing Iowa just because of the
- 37:49history of lack of success on the on the West Coast.
- 37:53You know, it's hard to hard to envision that, but it wouldn't
- 37:57surprise me because you know what the Achilles heel of that,
- 38:00of that USC team is, is physical football.
- 38:05And that's been kind of their bugaboo.
- 38:07That's what Notre Dame did to them.
- 38:09They got physical wisdom. And so we'll we'll see, We'll
- 38:13see. Got to play the games.
- 38:15But yeah, that's what I would. I would, I would probably get
- 38:20Michigan. Do you, do you like USC or
- 38:22Nebraska game? Do you have a feel for that one
- 38:24tomorrow? Hawks will see both of them in
- 38:25the next few weeks. I know I've got that.
- 38:28I was. I told somebody this morning I
- 38:30was like, I'm pretty excited to watch that game just because I
- 38:34always got both of them the next month.
- 38:36And so I can get a feel for both teams.
- 38:38I think USC is going to beat them.
- 38:41I just, I don't think Nebraska is any good.
- 38:43I think they're soft football team and and I think Lincoln
- 38:47Riley's a better coach than that rule.
- 38:49And I think there's going to be some Nebraska fans probably
- 38:52complaining on Saturday night, Sunday morning about we extended
- 38:57this guy well. We can definitely hear that, no
- 39:01doubt. Hey, Tom, over to basketball.
- 39:03It'll start officially next week.
- 39:05Got a first look last night, not last night at the women's team
- 39:08in their exhibition win on the men's side.
- 39:11Pretty soft schedule to open things up.
- 39:13Take us back to a week ago, they take on Texas Tech and that
- 39:16scrimmage sounds like I will. Lost by about 10 not shooting
- 39:19the ball very well in the two exhibition games.
- 39:22They're not you know, I 4 of 27 in the first one against Slew
- 39:30and then I know they were one of fourteen in the first half
- 39:33against Texas Tech. Now Texas Tech's really good.
- 39:38We should qualify things by saying that that they are a
- 39:41really good top 10 ish team in college basketball this year.
- 39:46So it's not like they lost to a bad team and that, and I heard
- 39:50it was really competitive, but I was started out shooting poorly
- 39:54and, and started slow and, and just could never catch up, so to
- 40:00speak. So yeah, I, I think it's got to
- 40:05be a concern going into the season how this team shoots the
- 40:07basketball because you've got in the game today.
- 40:10I don't care who you are, you got to shoot, you got to make
- 40:12shots from the outside. That's just part of the game.
- 40:15And so they've got to, they got to figure this out and watch,
- 40:20they'll come out against. Bobby MO on Tuesday night and
- 40:23probably go 10 of their first 12 and roll, you know, just that's
- 40:28just how this game works, but I'm anxious just to see him.
- 40:32I just really am. I just want to see what this
- 40:34looks like and get a feel for this team because right now
- 40:37we're kind of fine blind. You know, we think we know, but
- 40:40we don't. We don't.
- 40:42And it's, you know, in McCollum. He even said I didn't know how
- 40:47it was going to work bringing 4 guys over from Northwest
- 40:50Missouri State last year and the Drake and worked out well.
- 40:54And he's like, hey, I'm just going to double down in some
- 40:57ways on it and bring 6 this time because I feel like it'll work.
- 41:01OK. We're going to find out, you
- 41:03know, and if it works, boy, it's going to be fun.
- 41:07If it doesn't, then you got a reset.
- 41:10You really got to reset. Tom Caker at hawkeyereport.com.
