- 0:33about God and to strengthen your daily walk with Jesus Christ.
- 1:03Join us in this broadcast of Women at the Well Ministries as Kim continues her teaching on prayer.
- 1:08Follow along with her as she walks us through the model prayer,
- 1:11making it come to life in our own lives.
- 1:15Hello, and thank you for joining us in this broadcast of Woman at the Well Ministries.
- 1:19And we're going to look in Matthew chapter 6, and we're going to see what the
- 1:23Bible says concerning prayer.
- 1:25And we've spoken over the last few lessons about prayer and the elements of
- 1:29prayer that we've chosen to highlight that we would have in our lessons.
- 1:33But we want to see exactly in this particular passage of scripture what the
- 1:38Lord says that should be in our prayers and how we should pray.
- 1:41But before we do that, I ask that you would pray with me, please.
- 1:44Our kind and most gracious, dear Heavenly Father, Lord, we just thank you that
- 1:47we know that you're listening.
- 1:49We thank you, dear Heavenly Father, that you are God. And we thank you that
- 1:52we know, Lord, that even though we have failed you today, that you have loved
- 1:57us and that you have watched over us.
- 1:59And as we ask for repentance in our heart and our soul, dear God,
- 2:02that you truly will forgive us because you said that if we would confess our
- 2:06sins, you'd be faithful and just to forgive them.
- 2:09Lord, I praise you for who you are. And I thank you that I know that you are
- 2:12capable and that you are able and that I can come to you because you've invited
- 2:16me to, Lord, and that I can ask you to meet those needs that I have,
- 2:20Lord, that I can ask you to walk with me. And you said that you would never leave me nor forsake me.
- 2:24And Lord, I can ask you to comfort me because you said that you've given me
- 2:27the comforter to live within me.
- 2:29Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for who you are and I thank you for all that you do.
- 2:33And I ask you, dear Heavenly Father, for the next few moments as we gather together
- 2:36around your scriptures, that you would just unfold in front of us.
- 2:40Dear Lord, that you would teach us and instruct us so that we would be able
- 2:43to speak to you in the way that you would have us to, Lord, and that we would
- 2:46have the full assurance of knowing that you're listening to us and that we have
- 2:50reached your heart and that our words have touched your ears.
- 2:54Lord, we pray that you would be with those in our listening audience that have needs.
- 2:58We pray that you'd be with the needs that we have, Lord, and we pray that you
- 3:00would continue to bless women at the Well Ministries, that you would use us
- 3:04in a mighty way in your service.
- 3:05Lord, please have your richest blessings upon this reading that we're going
- 3:09to do. Please take these words and may it penetrate the hearts of those that hear.
- 3:13To all these things we ask in Thine most precious and holy name we pray,
- 3:16and all of God's people sin.
- 3:18Amen. Beginning in verse 5
- 3:22of Matthew chapter 6, we begin to get some instructions concerning prayer.
- 3:27The main points that we'd like to make in today's lesson are going to come in
- 3:31verse 9 and following because it's the Lord's prayer, as many people say,
- 3:36but it's actually the model prayer.
- 3:37I believe the Lord's prayer was when he spoke in the Garden of Gethsemane,
- 3:41and he spoke to Jesus that day, and he poured his heart out.
- 3:44But this is the prayer that the Lord speaks, and it's a model in which that
- 3:48we can use to have our own prayers.
- 3:50But in verse 5, he says, And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are.
- 3:56For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets,
- 4:00that they may be seen of men.
- 4:03Verily I say unto you, they have the reward. You see, prayer is an attitude of a heart.
- 4:10Prayer is our time to stand before the God of the universe and to converse with him.
- 4:16Prayer is our means of really getting intimate and speaking to Jesus Christ
- 4:22about the things that are in our lives, the things that are happening to us,
- 4:25the fears that we may have because perfect love casts out all fear,
- 4:29and we know that he loves us perfectly, and we come to him in faith believing.
- 4:34Then we are assured that our fears can dissipate because his love will cover that.
- 4:40And as we begin to speak to Jesus, we sort of watch the rest of the world go
- 4:45away when we're truly opening our heart to him.
- 4:47And in this verse, what he's saying is, if you're not praying to pray to me,
- 4:52then you've already got your rewards. I have no need to answer you.
- 4:57And you see, what he's speaking about here is the hypocrites who want people
- 5:01to think they're religious,
- 5:02that want people to think that they are all that in a bag of chips when it comes
- 5:05to religion, the ones that are wearing the religion on their sleeves and telling
- 5:09everybody else about how good they are and about who they are.
- 5:13He warns them that their prayers are not what they should be.
- 5:19As we continue, he says that thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet.
- 5:24And when thou hast shut thy door, pray to the Father which is in secret,
- 5:28and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
- 5:33What he's telling us is it is a conversation between me and God.
- 5:37It's a conversation between you and God. It's something that is strictly between the two of you.
- 5:44It doesn't need to be broadcast. It isn't something to brag about.
- 5:48It isn't something for others to judge you with. That is not even any of our
- 5:53intent as we've been teaching these lessons on prayer is to tell you that if
- 5:57you're not praying these elements, you're praying wrong.
- 6:00What we're doing is handing you some instructions that the word of God says
- 6:04to let your prayer life be richer and more full.
- 6:08But let me tell you, the prayer of a repentant heart is correct.
- 6:13And it doesn't have to have any certain speech pattern.
- 6:17It doesn't have to have any certain length. It doesn't have to be blessed by
- 6:22any man and doesn't have to be said for you.
- 6:25When you become a child of the Most High God, you have direct access to God
- 6:30the Father through Jesus the Son.
- 6:33And he says, come boldly to the throne of grace that you may obtain mercy.
- 6:38In the time of need. But it's a time when you and God, you and Jesus are alone.
- 6:47And your prayers need to be about your relationship with him.
- 6:51Not about what other people are seeing or what other people are doing.
- 6:56And you see, when you have a rich, full prayer life, you have nothing to worry
- 7:02about as to whether other people know you're praying because they'll see it.
- 7:06He said very plainly that if you pray to me in secret, I'll reward you openly.
- 7:09You can tell when someone's walking close to God. You can tell when they're
- 7:14ingesting the word of God on a regular and daily basis.
- 7:17You can tell when they're continuing in prayer always.
- 7:21You can tell when there's nothing between them and God.
- 7:25And God's blessings just pour upon them.
- 7:28Do they have trouble in their life? Yes, but they have a peace that passeth
- 7:32understanding and a joy unspeakable and full of glory, and his presence radiates around about them.
- 7:39He said that if you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
- 7:42that he would exalt you in due time.
- 7:44He says in verse 7 of Matthew chapter 6, but when you pray, use not vain repetitions
- 7:50as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
- 7:55And I know that many of us have been
- 7:58in the presence and we've heard people pray big
- 8:01long lengthy prayers and some of them perhaps may have sounded good and all
- 8:07of their t's were crossed and their eyes were dotted and their grammar was absolutely
- 8:12impeccable they use beautiful long words but at the end of it I wonder if they
- 8:18actually said anything that was in their hearts.
- 8:21You see, prayer is about pouring your heart out to God. Some people are natural born speakers.
- 8:28And when they speak, it just sounds pretty.
- 8:32Others have a real hard time getting it out.
- 8:36But you see, when you speak to God, it's not about how pretty it sounds.
- 8:40It's not about how easily it flows.
- 8:43It's about you being honest before God.
- 8:47It's about you being absolutely open with the God of the universe and believing
- 8:52that he hears you and believing that he's going to take care of you and believing
- 8:57that you've just left the throne of God.
- 9:01There's power in prayer, and it comes from a relationship with him.
- 9:06He says, be ye not therefore like unto them, for your father knoweth what things
- 9:11ye have need of before you ask him.
- 9:14If you'll recall, and I've used this illustration several times in this series,
- 9:20but when Peter was on the boat with the rest of the boys and the storm was raging round about them.
- 9:28Peter looks out of the boat and he sees coming towards him someone that he thinks is Jesus.
- 9:36Did you hear me? When the storm is raging round about him, and Peter looks out
- 9:41of the boat, and he sees someone coming towards him.
- 9:45You see, Jesus knew the need of the boys.
- 9:49Jesus understood the storm. But I want you to also see that the storm was powerless to Jesus.
- 9:58You see, Jesus walked.
- 10:02On the storm. Jesus walked through the storm.
- 10:07And Jesus also, in several places in the scripture, spoke to the storm and said, peace, be still.
- 10:15And the winds and the waves obeyed his voice.
- 10:19I said all of that to say this, Jesus knows what you need.
- 10:26Jesus knows the problem that you have before you even ask,
- 10:31but he has set it up in such a way that he wants you to show that you believe
- 10:37in him, that you have confidence in his abilities, that you trust in him to take care of you,
- 10:44that you understand that without him, you are nothing.
- 10:48You're not telling him something he doesn't know. You're showing him how much
- 10:52he means to you and how much confidence you have in him when you come to him in prayer.
- 10:57He knows what you need, and he's already there, regardless of what your storm.
- 11:05Rest assured, he's already there.
- 11:10And he's never going to leave you nor forsake you. And he'll never lead you
- 11:13where he hasn't gone before you. That's the whole concept of leading.
- 11:19He's ahead and you're following. He said, come follow me.
- 11:23And then he said, I am the way. So you never have to worry about him getting lost.
- 11:28You never have to worry about him not having his compass adjusted.
- 11:33But you know, he can't say that about you and me. You see, Jesus knows your
- 11:39every fault and he knows your every weakness.
- 11:44He knows the things that tempt you and he knows when your compass is out of line.
- 11:51He knows when you are centered on him and he's your true north or when the world
- 12:00has become where you've set your compass and where you've let it be your God.
- 12:06He knows where you go when you're in trouble, but he also knows where you go
- 12:11when you think everything's okay.
- 12:13You see, with the compass, true north is true north, and it's set against a very, very absolute,
- 12:23And Jesus Christ should be our true north. He said, I am the way.
- 12:26And he also said that he would light the way because he preciously told us that he was the light.
- 12:34Friends, he loves you and he wants to hear from you and he wants you to follow him.
- 12:41And we do that by staying in the center of his will,
- 12:46by being holy as he was holy, by
- 12:50assessing our walk and our life regularly to
- 12:54see if we need to again come like peter did and allow
- 12:58jesus just to brush off the dust of the world from us to realign our compass
- 13:04so that jesus is where we're headed so that all things are in relation to jesus
- 13:11christ so that every activity that you participate,
- 13:15participate in is completely governed
- 13:19by the commandments and the rules and the love of god so that your absolute
- 13:25walk is absolutely where he would have you and that comes from a very close
- 13:31relationship he said that if we regard iniquity in our hearts that he wouldn't hear us.
- 13:40Peter again in that same story that he gives us is standing in the boat,
- 13:47And he says to Jesus, if it be you, then bid me come.
- 13:51Part of Peter's problem was he didn't recognize Jesus.
- 13:55And I believe that part of our problems on a day-to-day basis is we don't recognize
- 13:59the hand of Jesus in our lives when it's there.
- 14:03And I believe many times as he's speaking to us, we turn a deaf ear because
- 14:08we just don't recognize him.
- 14:11If you have the prayer life that he's intended for you to have,
- 14:15and you're praying without ceasing and you're praying continually,
- 14:19you won't have a problem recognizing him.
- 14:22You'll hear him when he whispers. You'll see him when his hand sweeps by.
- 14:28You'll feel him in the stillness of the night.
- 14:31You'll see him in his glory round about the entire storm.
- 14:37Something very interesting will happen because in his presence,
- 14:40the storm will grow dim and it will have no effect on you.
- 14:45You see, Jesus bid Peter to come, and he stepped out of the boat, and he came.
- 14:52And everything was going fine because Jesus was guiding him.
- 14:56He had placed his faith in Jesus. His focus was on Jesus Christ.
- 15:02But suddenly something changed, and his focus changed.
- 15:07His compass became aligned with something false.
- 15:13And you know it may have looked to him like it was okay but.
- 15:17It wasn't long until peter found he was in a world of hurt and he sank because
- 15:22he got his eyes on the storm he quit speaking to jesus he quit trusting in jesus
- 15:29the relationship that he had he abandoned for a moment.
- 15:35But suddenly, as he's sinking, Jesus is standing.
- 15:41And he lifts his hands up and he says, save me.
- 15:45My Bible says that immediately Jesus reached down and picked him up.
- 15:52That's the God we serve. He's ready to hear us.
- 15:56He loves us. He wants to be around us. He cares about us.
- 16:01The things about us matter to him.
- 16:04And he says that if we just will call unto him he will answer us the difference
- 16:11in sinking in this world and walking above the world,
- 16:15is our relationship with jesus christ if he is the center and he is the focus
- 16:20and he's who we're speaking to.
- 16:23He will sustain us and no matter how big
- 16:26the storm is we'll be above the storm but
- 16:30it all begins with a personal relationship with jesus christ
- 16:33and it continues with a
- 16:36constant fellowship that he says
- 16:39in revelations 320 that he is constantly
- 16:42pursuing us as he's knocking on our heart's door and
- 16:45that he wants to sup with us and us with him that
- 16:48we can fellowship with him he invites
- 16:51us in matthew 7 7 to ask and ye
- 16:54shall receive seek and ye shall find knock and
- 16:57it shall be given unto you or opened unto
- 17:00you and then he tells us beginning
- 17:04in verse 9 of matthew chapter 6 his
- 17:07prayer one that we can take a close look
- 17:10at and see how jesus prayed to the father he says
- 17:14our father which art in heaven hallowed be
- 17:17thy name he speaks to him and
- 17:20he calls him his father he establishes
- 17:24his relationship when you come to
- 17:27jesus christ in prayer you have him
- 17:30as your father he has adopted you
- 17:33into the family you have a right to speak to him
- 17:35and you have a right to reach god the father
- 17:38through jesus the son and as you.
- 17:41Begin to speak to him as you begin to say that as
- 17:44you begin to let your heart hear that then the
- 17:47faith that you have within yourself swells up and
- 17:51it gives you really good cleats to
- 17:55hang on and know that the
- 17:58next moments that you're spending are spent as
- 18:01an investment in your life and in your time and in your eternity and that you
- 18:06are going to spend the next few moments in an absolute presence of God Almighty
- 18:12and he begins his prayer establishing that relationship And he continues with, Hallowood be thy name.
- 18:22He reverences him. He honors him. As we begin to be thankful for the things
- 18:29about who God is, as we begin to see all that it is that he does for us,
- 18:34our faith again begins to swell up.
- 18:37And faith is the key that unlocks heaven's door.
- 18:41Jesus said, but without faith, it is impossible to please me.
- 18:45And he says that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
- 18:49You want to get things from God? God, you need to spend time with God.
- 18:54You want to know him, you'll find him. He says, seek and you shall find.
- 18:58You got questions, he's got answers.
- 19:02Nobody else does. They may give you some, but he has the real answers. You know why?
- 19:09Because he is the answer.
- 19:13Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
- 19:17He submits to him. that
- 19:21act of submission surrendering ourselves and saying
- 19:25your will be done father not mine let the kingdom of god come and relay itself
- 19:31in front of everyone let it manifest itself in my life let me be what you'd
- 19:36have me to be lord remove me let me be exactly what you planned for me.
- 19:43And give us this day our daily bread.
- 19:46Lord, I know that I'm nothing without you. And I know that you give me all things.
- 19:52And I know that you are the creator of all things.
- 19:54And I know that you know what's best for me.
- 19:56And I trust you to provide even my sustenance.
- 20:02And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. You see,
- 20:06when we begin to speak to God and we've thanked him for who he is and we've
- 20:10praised him for who he is.
- 20:12And we've established that relationship and we've surrendered to him.
- 20:18We also need to confess our sins because he said that if you hide or regard
- 20:25iniquity in your heart, that he would not hear you.
- 20:29My friends in this model prayer we watch the elements
- 20:32that we have pulled out in this highlighted in this
- 20:35series come to life and we
- 20:38want our slate clean between us and jesus as we begin to speak to him about
- 20:42what we want and we need to ask him for forgiveness we need to ask him for protection
- 20:48we need to begin to petition him for his strength and his resources and lead
- 20:54us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
- 20:57For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
- 21:03Amen. This God that we serve, he wants us to speak to him.
- 21:08And we need to worship him for who he is. We need to talk about how hallowed he is.
- 21:14We need to surrender to his power and his authority.
- 21:20We need to cleanse our lives so that we are able, as we confess to him,
- 21:26for him to hear us, so that there's nothing between us and God.
- 21:30We need to feel confident as we come boldly to the throne, as he said in Hebrews
- 21:35chapter 4, and ask him for the things that we have need of.
- 21:40We need to be thankful for all that he's done and for all that he continues to do.
- 21:46Yes, he said in 1 Thessalonians 5, 17, to pray without ceasing.
- 21:53Oh, how he loves you, and oh, how he loves me.
- 21:57And this could be the day that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, my Lord.
