- 0:00Has this ever happened to you?
- 0:02You sat through a long meeting and at the end of it you said to yourself, you know,
- 0:07I think that could have been handled by an email.
- 0:10Well, what if after the meeting you did get an email telling you about how wonderful the
- 0:15meeting was, but you didn't go to the meeting.
- 0:19You just heard about the people who attended having a wonderful time doing great things.
- 0:24And what if you read the email and said, I think I paid for this.
- 0:30Now one more thing I want you to imagine.
- 0:33Imagine that this meeting and its email is not the product or some brainchild of someone
- 0:39from corporate headquarters, but instead is from a group of bishops from several countries.
- 0:46Then what?
- 0:47Stay with me.
- 0:48I've got a story to tell.
- 0:49Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTigge, your host here every day, The Catholic Current,
- 0:53coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network.
- 0:56Let's take a closer look.
- 0:58Glad you're here.
- 1:00On February 15th through 17th, 11 bishops met in the United States at a retreat center
- 1:06to, as they said, pray and discuss their shared ministry as pastors.
- 1:11There were bishops from Latin America and the Caribbean, from Canada and from the United
- 1:17States.
- 1:18Okay, good for them.
- 1:19What did they do at that retreat?
- 1:21In their own words, they said, we have experienced days of fraternal joy, united in prayer, sincere
- 1:28dialogue and pastoral discernment.
- 1:32And you might say, gosh, good for them.
- 1:35Well, I started hearing from people from many walks of life who've been following the meeting
- 1:41and the aftermath and so on.
- 1:44Not surprising for someone like me who works in media.
- 1:47And they had some questions.
- 1:48And one of the questions was, who paid for this?
- 1:52Their travel from several different countries to the United States, the room and board,
- 1:57who paid for this?
- 1:58And someone asked, did the bishops work extra shifts at McDonald's or the night shift driving
- 2:03for Uber to pay for this?
- 2:06I don't know.
- 2:07And that's not my principal concern.
- 2:11My principal concern is from their press release regarding their February 15th to 17th meeting.
- 2:19And the press release was given to the public on February 19th, just a few days ago.
- 2:27And they concluded with this.
- 2:29We urge all the people of God in the Americas to live our unity in a concrete and daily
- 2:37way.
- 2:38The generous welcome of migrants and the defense of the most vulnerable and respectful dialogue
- 2:44even admits differences in the patient building of bridges.
- 2:51I don't know what stands out for you in that statement, but here's what stands out for
- 2:54me bridges and February 19th, 2026.
- 3:00So I would suggest to the signatories of this document, bishops all that they build a bridge
- 3:07and they build a bridge from wherever they met to Greenville, North Carolina.
- 3:13Why there?
- 3:14Because on February 19th, the date that this press release was given to the public, there
- 3:20was a home invasion in Greenville, North Carolina, who invaded the home.
- 3:26Well, among them was undocumented newcomer, Zaid Mayan Esteban and the undocumented and
- 3:33undomiciled Jonathan David Garcia Lario, previously deported in 2024 and John Carlos
- 3:41Calderon whose immigration status is under investigation.
- 3:45And what did they do when they invaded that home?
- 3:48Well, they found someone there and they beat him and then they sodomized him and then they
- 3:55pulled out his fingernails.
- 4:01That is what they did.
- 4:03I would like to see a bridge built there.
- 4:09And once the bridge is built to Greenville, to that gentleman's home where he was violated
- 4:17by newcomers, I would like the bishops to state to that man's face looking him in the
- 4:23eye what they put in their press release, namely that fraternity is possible and that
- 4:29the gospel continues to be a transformative force in our societies.
- 4:35And I'd like to be there when it happened.
- 4:40Now maybe I'm being a little unfair to the signatories of this document, and maybe the
- 4:47people who contacted me with concern and even exasperation are being unfair to the signatories
- 4:54as well.
- 4:55I mean, surely they all mean well, don't they?
- 4:58So I want to take a lesson from St. Paul, his epistle to Galatians, chapter 6, verse
- 5:041.
- 5:05My translation reads this way,
- 5:06Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in
- 5:13a spirit of gentleness.
- 5:15Look to yourself, lest you be tempted.
- 5:18Now I read that from St. Paul and I thought back to when I used to broadcast live on radio.
- 5:26One of the slogans of our network is proclaiming the fullness of truth with clarity and charity.
- 5:31And while I was broadcasting live, an old friend would text me in all caps with exclamation
- 5:36points and he would yell with his thumbs, more clarity, less charity.
- 5:42So on behalf of that gentleman from Greenville, and on behalf of those who have contacted
- 5:48me about the tragedy in Greenville and the press release that was given to the public
- 5:54on the same day of this horrendous crime, I want to offer a suggestion to the signatories,
- 6:00indeed to all bishops, more facts, fewer slogans.
- 6:08Based on what I've heard from people who've written me, called me, text me, spoken to
- 6:14me, people from all walks of life, clergy, lay, religious, here's what we all need.
- 6:22There are people in the media saying that American bishops have profited significantly
- 6:30from their aid to migrants.
- 6:34What people need, they tell me, all in one place is a definitive step-by-step rebuttal
- 6:42of that claim with, of course, all the receipts.
- 6:47Another thing that people tell me that they need from our bishops is definitive rebuttal
- 6:54of the accusation that different organizations under the guidance of the Catholic Church
- 7:01and the bishops in the United States have been implicated in the trafficking of children.
- 7:06That urgently needs to be rebutted step-by-step in public and in print, of course, with all
- 7:15the receipts.
- 7:17And finally, people tell me that what they need from our bishops in these are times is
- 7:23concrete examples of pastoral solicitude to people who have been violated and worse in
- 7:34their own homes by, you know, newcomers.
- 7:39I know that a lot of clergy have gone out of their way to be shown to be accompanying
- 7:45the recently arrived in the United States and the not-so-recently-arrived who lack documentation,
- 7:53but I haven't seen an equal or comparable effort to be photographed offering the gospel
- 8:02and the sacraments to people who've been violated by criminals who should not have been in the
- 8:08country in the first place, and not a lot of pastoral accompaniment of those families
- 8:14who are grieving because their loved ones have been raped and murdered by people who
- 8:19should not have been in this country in the first place.
- 8:23So on behalf of all those people, they asked me to deliver a message to these signatories.
- 8:31More facts, fewer slogans.
- 8:35And I would say this as a member of the clergy.
- 8:39The sheep need to be fed, taught, and protected and sanctified by the shepherds.
- 8:48And when public statements seem to be at variance with public perception, credibility is at
- 8:57risk.
- 8:58And I believe that the sheep are not well-served and God is not glorified when the shepherds
- 9:07are perceived as not being good stewards of their credibility.
- 9:14There's a lot here.
- 9:16My heart breaks for those who've been affected grievously by recent events.
- 9:24In this holy season of Lent, let's make reparation and sacrifice.
- 9:28Meanwhile, think of these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about it with those
- 9:34you love.
- 9:35Go in peace and please do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
