- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:03I'm here with Yvette Webb and she's gonna tell you about her business real quickly.
- 0:07But how did you get started in business, Yvette?
- 0:11So it's kind of a interesting story.
- 0:14It happened because my husband had lost his job and then we started looking at franchises.
- 0:20And Assisted Living Locators was one of the franchises suggested to us by our franchise coach because of our personalities and our, you know, just our um I guess moral
- 0:33background.
- 0:34Um, so that was the best fit for us to go with.
- 0:38So
- 0:40And did you have family and facilities like that, or is that something you felt passionate about?
- 0:46I had uh my grandmother was in a nursing home at the end of her life, but other than that, um didn't have a lot of experience with senior communities.
- 0:58Um, but I didn't had a lot of experience with helping um older friends and just seeing how complex it was, all the things that they had to deal with, and I would help them because
- 1:12it was just overwhelming for them.
- 1:14So
- 1:15Um, that when I found out about the business I was like, Oh good, there is actually help out there and I wanna be a part of it.
- 1:23So yeah.
- 1:25don't or have not worked with a coach before.
- 1:27What's it like working with a coach, especially in a franchise situation?
- 1:32That was a really great experience because we he was able to um he gave us some personality tests.
- 1:39He talked to us a lot about what our goals were, you know, what things, you know, kind of integrity type of questions, what we would want out of a business.
- 1:51And of course ours was like, Well, we wanna make a difference, we wanna help people, serve people.
- 1:57So
- 1:58just a money making venture was not gonna be fulfilling for us.
- 2:02Um and so he really honed it in on three businesses that he thought would be a good fit.
- 2:10And then I uh assisted living locators was the best for us.
- 2:15And so um it was great.
- 2:18He really helped to give us the confidence that we needed to make that step and he was a great coach.
- 2:25We really enjoyed him.
- 2:26tell me, what was that step like for you coming from just a regular job, quote unquote, and into a business?
- 2:31What was the biggest thing you had to overcome?
- 2:34Well, so f actually, um, I hadn't hadn't been working in uh several years.
- 2:41I kind of called myself retired because I was tired of working kind of nothing jobs.
- 2:48Um, they weren't really career jobs and um having to deal with other people.
- 2:55Their vision that didn't always match up with what I wanted.
- 3:00Um and so when I was able to
- 3:03stop working, I was happy to leave that life.
- 3:07And then it was just a a time for me to I guess um get myself back.
- 3:15And I so then it actually prepared me to be able to step into the business and really commit to it.
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:24Good.
- 3:25And tell us what's God doing right now in your business?
- 3:28So right now I have seen so many things where I can see his hand.
- 3:33Um, I network a lot.
- 3:35I'm a part of so many different networking groups.
- 3:38And he has helped me connect with people that have just been amazing people just in my life personally and business wise.
- 3:51That um and sometimes, you know, I'll go to a networking event and I might meet somebody there that I really connect with.
- 3:58And that's the first time they've been there and they never come back to that meeting again.
- 4:03But I I feel that, you know, they were we were both led to be at that meeting on that day so that we could meet.
- 4:10and you know, one one person that I've met through networking, she's just recently come back from doing a TED talk and she's doing a a women's uh meeting this Saturday.
- 4:22And so I'm like, Thank and it was
- 4:25It was a spiritual experience when we m met and and got to know each other.
- 4:31So we're definitely connected forever now, I feel like.
- 4:35So yeah.
- 4:36It
- 4:37friends.
- 4:37You know, some people go to networking and they're so busy trying to pass out their business cards, they forget to make those appointments and make those specific
- 4:45connections.
- 4:46we were had Johnny Wan on a couple of episodes back and he talked about he o he finds three people and makes specific connections with three people.
- 4:54That way you can hone in and focus and have those connections deeper, which I I appreciated.
- 5:00I just pray that, you know, you know, Lord help me find the one person that I need to meet today.
- 5:06Um and if I find more, great.
- 5:09That's just a bonus.
- 5:10But every day I'm like, help me find the one person that I need to meet today, that they need me or I need them.
- 5:17So um, yeah.
- 5:20networking together, and Steve heads our group, and he always says, if you don't need the meeting, the meeting may need you.
- 5:27And so it's important to have those consistency because when you come to those meetings, consistency it becomes family.
- 5:33If you're coming to the one office and you're trying to hit a thousand different meetings because you want to be in all the different meetings, you just miss the point.
- 5:38It's when you come consistently in a networking meeting that you really gather a family around you.
- 5:43And then people are like, yeah, that person, right?
- 5:45I know exactly what she does and exactly.
- 5:47How to connect her to the right people.
- 5:49Exactly.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51So it's it's been a great experience just and it's it it's helped me be able to get out of my shell more and be more comfortable talking to people that I don't know.
- 6:03Um I've always been kind of shy throughout my life and I'm still very much an introvert, you know.
- 6:10If I didn't have to leave the house, I wouldn't, but
- 6:14And that's the other benefit of having this business is that it it forces me to get outside of my comfort zone.
- 6:21And um, you know, I wouldn't have been able to help uh as many people if I had just stayed in my bubble and just continued as I was going.
- 6:32I really needed this push to get me out there to engage with the my community at large and not just not just my church family, not just my
- 6:43biological family, you know, it's like there's a whole world out there that needs good people and good influences and I'm I'm happy to be a part of that.
- 6:54And to get me to meet people like you at Christian Business Networking.
- 6:57I think it's been a really great I was so glad to have learned about it and and go.
- 7:02And I'm always telling people, you need to come to this meeting.
- 7:06Once I know that they're Christian, I'm like, Yeah, you need to be at this meeting 'cause it's it's really good for you.
- 7:11So yeah.
- 7:12meeting because you can stop and pray for people and they're not afraid to talk about their face.
- 7:17So many times we try to hide that and everything.
- 7:19So going to what you're talking about about introverts, what people don't understand about introverts, we love people.
- 7:25We just refresh when we're away from people.
- 7:27And so I think people think introverts, you know, you gotta hide in a closet or hide in a box and everything.
- 7:31But in reality we we love people.
- 7:33We just like deeper connections with people.
- 7:35We don't like the quick, quick, quick, quick, quick, let's meet everybody and have a million pe friends and then
- 7:40We don't know any of those friends.
- 7:42We want to dig deep into connecting those people.
- 7:44Yeah, that good handful of um close friends is way better, more important to me.
- 7:52And being in smaller groups instead of uh hundreds of people, that I don't I don't do well in those environments.
- 8:02Unless I'm on stage and then I'm like, I can do it because I'm not in the middle of trying to figure out how do I talk to this person or that person.
- 8:12Just let me talk to all of them at once and I'm good.
- 8:15That's one way to do it, isn't it?
- 8:17So tell us, is there a story that you could share with us about you don't have to use names or anything, about how you help somebody in your business?
- 8:26gosh, there's so many.
- 8:28I would tell you about a family that I'm helping right now.
- 8:31Um, and this was uh a woman that reached out to me, referred by one of those people that God put in my life.
- 8:41And she was just struggling so much because she had her parents living with her in her home and she wanted to take care of them.
- 8:49She wanted to, you know, we all feel like we want to do that.
- 8:52It's the right thing to do.
- 8:54But it had gotten to the point where she ended up having to quit her job.
- 8:58She basically lost all of her social network.
- 9:03And she was feeling um a little hopeless about the situation.
- 9:09And like she wasn't really able to take care of them the way that they needed.
- 9:15So I've been helping them um to hopefully soon.
- 9:21we'll be able to have a good resolution and and solve all the problems that they've all been facing.
- 9:29And it's just continuing to be consistent and persistent and just keep trying new things.
- 9:39because it's been very difficult for the whole family.
- 9:42So um I think we're at the close of that journey pretty soon.
- 9:46And then
- 9:47She'll be able to get her life back, they'll be able to get the care that they need.
- 9:52And I'll be super happy because then I'll know that I did a good job and they're okay now.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:00because we want to take care of our family, but there there's an edge there.
- 10:04There's a spot where you know that y somebody else is gonna help that person better, especially when it comes to like dementia or specific health care issues.
- 10:14'cause if you wear yourself out and you're not taking care of your own health, then you can't take care of their health.
- 10:19And I think that's where that line is.
- 10:21Do you you have any insight on that where that line is for someone?
- 10:25Yeah, I mean, I think most people go over that line and they don't realize it.
- 10:35I do see uh a lot of burnout with family caregivers.
- 10:40And, you know, I I try to encourage them and just say, look, you're doing the best that you can.
- 10:46Just understand that most care, you know, like paid caregivers, they have a shift.
- 10:53And they clock in and they clock out, they get to go home.
- 10:56You are on call 24-7.
- 10:58And that is too much for somebody.
- 11:00Um, I had one client who she was just confided in me that she felt so bad that she hadn't done something sooner for her mom.
- 11:11And I told her, you know what, you have done the best that you could at the time, and you're doing the right thing now.
- 11:19So just trying to give her that comfort to know that.
- 11:22You know, she's not done anything wrong.
- 11:25She was doing the best that she could.
- 11:27And, you know, to be able to help her get help for her mom was so wonderful.
- 11:34It was definitely a case of dementia that had gotten way far more advanced than she realized.
- 11:41And um it probably should have done been done sooner, but there was no way for her to know that until it got to the point where it was um
- 11:52Critical, right?
- 11:53So, you know.
- 11:55And I I try to help people with the guilt of it because, you know, like I said, we're all just trying to do the best that we can for our parents.
- 12:03Nobody's trained us how to do this.
- 12:06There's not really a lot of support out there and people feel like they're doing it alone.
- 12:14So I'm happy to help them to not be alone in that journey anymore.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:19So we're going to shift into our business growth concept and we've kind of already touched base on it.
- 12:23You said networking is very powerful in your business.
- 12:26Kind of talk to us a little bit about how you do networking and how you could help somebody else network better.
- 12:32Yeah, so um for me networking was definitely a new skill I had to learn.
- 12:38I didn't know how to do it at all.
- 12:40And so it took me some time in the beginning just to even learn how to approach people.
- 12:48And um for me, honestly, I I don't try to talk to everybody.
- 12:54Um I go with my feelings of where I'm led because
- 13:03Some people you're not meant to talk to that day.
- 13:07and so if you spend time trying to talk to every single person, you may miss the person that you're really supposed to talk to.
- 13:14And they could leave.
- 13:15And then, you know, then you've missed your opportunity.
- 13:19So I try to focus on the people that I feel drawn to and, you know, have a conversation with them and and find out about them first.
- 13:28And, you know, just see, um
- 13:31if I feel like there's a way that I could help them.
- 13:34A lot of times I talk to people and it's just to help encourage them on how to um network for themselves, for their own business.
- 13:44And so, you know, whatever it is, however I can help, I I look for that opportunity.
- 13:50Um and you you were saying earlier about it's about consistency and continuing to go to the ones and for me it's the ones that feel like
- 14:00I belong there.
- 14:02Like this is a a good fit.
- 14:04We have similar you know, kind of like a similar mission in our business.
- 14:12And um there there are some that I've been to that I'm just like, mm, not for me.
- 14:17This is not the kind of networking that feels good to me.
- 14:21So I I move on and I go to um a different find a different group.
- 14:26Um, but I really love
- 14:30this area because the several Chamber of Commerce meetings that I go to feel really good.
- 14:39They're full of very good people and you know a lot of good Christian people, a lot of good moral people with integrity, and they're also very consistent.
- 14:54So those are the ones that I am drawn to.
- 14:58that I want to keep going back to.
- 15:01And it's been great.
- 15:02Um, but yeah, that's that's my uh message is to, you know, just go with the people that that you feel that are the right person that day.
- 15:17Not don't try to talk to everybody.
- 15:19That's that's not going to be productive in the end anyway.
- 15:22So and you never know.
- 15:24You never know that person that you you end up talking to.
- 15:28You might not have thought that that was a person that that would be a good fit for you, but it turns out they were.
- 15:34So and trust your gut, because sometimes when you meet somebody, you know right away that it's like, oh, this person it doesn't do business the way I do business.
- 15:45And it's okay to just kind of excuse yourself and go find somebody else to talk to.
- 15:52So
- 15:52before the call, we talked about authenticity.
- 15:54You said that was very important to you.
- 15:55Can I share a little bit about that?
- 15:57Yeah.
- 15:58So um I think a a lot of my life, you know, just in the process of growing as a person, I tried to hide a lot of who I was to not, you know, not get in the way, um, try to make
- 16:14myself smaller and um not let my personality out.
- 16:19And so through networking I I learned really quickly that you can't hide yourself.
- 16:26You need to be who you are.
- 16:29and don't and not to be uh a fake version.
- 16:32I he I heard a lot in the very beginning, just fake it till you make it.
- 16:35I'm like, I don't know how to fake it.
- 16:37I don't know how to fake anything.
- 16:39I just have to be me.
- 16:41And if it it cr connects with people, perfect.
- 16:45If it doesn't, perfect.
- 16:48Because then that that tells you that you're not you're not each other's cup of tea, and that's okay.
- 16:55We don't have to be
- 16:57um, everybody's you know, style or or what they like and so it's okay.
- 17:04And I'm not worried about that.
- 17:06So
- 17:07glad you said that because we we talk about in our group is abundance.
- 17:10You know, our group is not industry specific, so we may have two or three insurance people or two or three financial people, but we know God's gonna work individually and different
- 17:18people in different ways.
- 17:20And so having those choices and having those ways that God can use different people and use their skill set, I think is very powerful.
- 17:26And like you said, authenticity.
- 17:28There's nothing wrong with not connecting to someone.
- 17:31I think people we would think as a Christian, we're supposed to connect to everybody.
- 17:34But God has different purposes for all of us.
- 17:37And your purpose may be different this month than six months down the road.
- 17:40You know, I I may not need your services right now, but my dad's 80 years old.
- 17:45So at one point I may have to contact you and say, hey, what do you suggest here?
- 17:49You know, those kind of things.
- 17:50And that's part of the building this relationship and continuing the relationship and keeping it authentic.
- 17:55Um, as we end up here, what is one tidbit of wisdom you'd like to leave us with?
- 17:59And how can we get in touch with you?
- 18:03So I think I don't know how much wisdom it is, but I tried to live my life always leading with love.
- 18:11Whatever choices need to be made, ask yourself, are you doing this out of love?
- 18:17Um, because if you're doing it out of love, you're gonna be doing okay.
- 18:21If you do anything out of fear or anxiety or you know, shame or grief.
- 18:30Those choices are gonna lead you further down the that path.
- 18:34But if you focus on doing something out of love, then whatever happens, you will be doing what you're supposed to do.
- 18:42Um, so that's that's my message, I guess.
- 18:47Um, and that kind of goes along with uh what we were just talking about.
- 18:51It's like you can love everybody.
- 18:54That doesn't mean you have to be everybody's best friend.
- 18:57And so we can love everybody.
- 18:59Um
- 19:00And do be kind.
- 19:02Um and kindness isn't equal to niceness.
- 19:06So sometimes we just have to be s firm and and say, nope, sorry, I don't I'm not interested.
- 19:13And you know, it and that's okay.
- 19:15Um, so those nothing groundbreaking, like I was saying.
- 19:20I think it's the same with the gospel.
- 19:22It's like you've heard you know what to do, you you've heard the message, now you just have to do it.
- 19:28So
- 19:29how can we get in touch with you?
- 19:31So um do you want phone number, website, email?
- 19:36Yeah.
- 19:36name and tell us tell them to find you on social media, whatever is best for you.
- 19:40Yeah, so my name is Yvette Webb.
- 19:43Um, I'm on Facebook and LinkedIn mostly.
- 19:48I'm trying to figure out the other ones.
- 19:50Um, my business is assisted living locators and my area is northeast Dallas.
- 19:58you can contact me if you need any advice or help.
- 20:03And that's what I'm doing.
- 20:04Um, the certified senior advisor course that I just took.
- 20:10helps us to be able to connect people with the services that that are appropriate for their needs because we learn about all of the different aspects of senior care.
- 20:22And um so even if it's not for finding an assisted living for somebody, that's I do more than just that.
- 20:30So yeah.
- 20:32Well thanks for being with us today.
- 20:33Thanks for sharing your story.
- 20:35Thanks, Lyle.
- 20:36Thanks for having me.
