- 0:27Our current series is Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain
- 0:31and Sorrow at Work.
- 0:33In our last episode, we looked at the
- 0:35pain of being stuck in a job that
- 0:37you're overqualified for or locked out from a
- 0:39job that you really would be qualified for.
- 0:42In this episode, I want to talk about
- 0:43the related issue of what about when your
- 0:46boss underestimates you?
- 0:48So I went to that fountain of human
- 0:51complaint Reddit, the social media platform, and went
- 0:54to the subreddit Managed by Narcissists and found
- 0:57this post from a couple years ago.
- 0:59The user wrote, I've been at my company
- 1:01for a little over a year, and have
- 1:04been working at my industry for many years.
- 1:06I'm not entry-level, and it's ridiculous how
- 1:09my boss always makes subtle and non-subtle
- 1:11jabs at me, insinuating that I don't have
- 1:13experience or know what we do here, as
- 1:16if I'm clueless and stupid and need training
- 1:18or something of which I definitely do not.
- 1:20I have more experience than my boss and
- 1:22he knows it.
- 1:25Ugh, don't you just feel for this person?
- 1:27More experience than their boss and he knows
- 1:30it like, I've been there, right?
- 1:32Not with a boss this cruel.
- 1:34This boss is clearly not just underestimating the
- 1:36employee but even berating them.
- 1:38But I've definitely been in the position of
- 1:40feeling like my boss didn't fully understand what
- 1:42I was capable of.
- 1:44My boss didn't recognize my qualifications or understand
- 1:46my skill set or see how they were
- 1:48relevant to the projects at hand.
- 1:51Maybe you've been there too.
- 1:52It's a really deeply frustrating place to be.
- 1:56And the question we're asking in this series
- 1:58is when we face that kind of deep
- 1:59frustration, when we face this pain in our
- 2:02work, how do we offer it to Jesus
- 2:05and let him redeem it so it can
- 2:07become a place of spiritual growth and mission
- 2:10to others?
- 2:11Spiritual growth and mission to others.
- 2:14Okay, so there's a couple opportunities here.
- 2:17This dynamic of being underestimated by your boss
- 2:19is very similar to the dynamic we talked
- 2:21about in the last episode, seeing the same
- 2:24opportunities are there.
- 2:25The opportunity for greater intimacy with Jesus, for
- 2:27growing in humility, for growing in faithful patience.
- 2:30Those opportunities are all there when your boss
- 2:33underestimates you too.
- 2:35But I think in addition to those, because
- 2:36of the interpersonal nature where you're not just
- 2:39frustrated by a situation but frustrated with a
- 2:41particular person, is that there's two more opportunities
- 2:44here.
- 2:46There's the opportunity for Christ-like self-advocacy
- 2:49and the opportunity for letting love overcome resentment.
- 2:56Christ-like self-advocacy and letting love overcome
- 2:59resentment.
- 3:00Okay, so let's start with self-advocacy.
- 3:03At first blush, it might seem like the
- 3:05idea of self-advocacy contradicts the virtue of
- 3:08humility, right?
- 3:09In our Romans 12 passage we saw Paul,
- 3:12right, be willing to associate with those of
- 3:14low position or be willing to do menial
- 3:17work.
- 3:18If we're willing to do menial work with
- 3:20doing self-advocacy, asking to be able to
- 3:22do a different or more honored kind of
- 3:25work contradicts that spirit of humility.
- 3:27And that's a really good question.
- 3:29The question is how do we do self
- 3:31-advocacy in a Christ-like way?
- 3:33And I want to go to a specific
- 3:34example of this in the Apostle Paul.
- 3:37I think the Apostle Paul gives us a
- 3:38great image of what Christ-like self-advocacy
- 3:42can be like.
- 3:43So this comes from the book of Acts.
- 3:45This is Acts chapter 24.
- 3:47It's a longer passage, but I want to
- 3:48read the whole thing because it gives more
- 3:50of the nuance of how Paul is expressing
- 3:53himself.
- 3:55And the context here is that Paul has
- 3:56been arrested, he's in prison, he's facing various
- 4:00government authorities that are sort of weighing in
- 4:02on his case, and his accusers are fellow
- 4:06Jewish leaders who disagree with him about the
- 4:09person of Jesus, and so believe he's stirring
- 4:10up trouble by encouraging the way of Jesus.
- 4:13So that brings us to the beginning of
- 4:14chapter 24.
- 5:07When the governor motioned for him to speak,
- 5:10Paul replied, I know that for a number
- 5:12of years you have been a judge over
- 5:14this nation, so I gladly make my defense.
- 5:16You can easily verify that no more than
- 5:1812 years ago I went up to Jerusalem
- 5:20to worship.
- 5:21My accusers did not find me arguing with
- 5:23anyone at the temple, or stirring up a
- 5:25crowd in the synagogues, or anywhere else in
- 5:28the city, and they cannot prove to you
- 5:30the charges they are now making against me.
- 5:33However, I admit that I worship the God
- 5:34of our ancestors as a follower of the
- 5:36way which they call a sect.
- 5:38I believe everything that is in accordance with
- 5:40the law, and that is written in the
- 5:42prophets, and I have the same hope in
- 5:44God as these men themselves have, that there
- 5:46will be a resurrection of both the righteous
- 5:48and the wicked.
- 5:49So I strive always to keep my conscience
- 5:51clear before God and man.
- 5:54After an absence of several years I came
- 5:55to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for
- 5:57the poor, and to present offerings.
- 6:00I was ceremonially clean when they found me
- 6:02in the temple courts doing this.
- 6:03There was no crowd with me, nor was
- 6:05I involved in any disturbance.
- 6:07But there are some Jews from the province
- 6:09of Asia who ought to be here before
- 6:11you and bring charges if they have anything
- 6:13against me.
- 6:14Or these who are here should state what
- 6:16crime they found in me when I stood
- 6:17before the Sanhedrin, unless it was this one
- 6:20thing I shouted as I stood in their
- 6:22presence.
- 6:23It is concerning the resurrection of the dead
- 6:24that I am on trial before you today.
- 6:28Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the
- 6:30way, adjourned the proceedings.
- 6:32When Lysias the commander comes, he said, I
- 6:35will decide your case.
- 6:36He ordered the Sanhedrin to keep Paul under
- 6:38guard, but to give him freedom and permit
- 6:40his friends to take care of his needs.
- 6:43Several days later, Felix came with his wife
- 6:45Drusilla, who was Jewish.
- 6:47He sent for Paul and listened to him
- 6:48as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.
- 6:51As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control, and
- 6:54the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and
- 6:56said, that's enough for now.
- 6:58You may leave.
- 6:58When I find it convenient, I will send
- 7:00for you.
- 7:01At the same time, he was hoping Paul
- 7:02would offer him a bribe, so he sent
- 7:04for him frequently and talked with him.
- 7:07When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded
- 7:09by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to
- 7:12grant a favor to the Jews, he left
- 7:14Paul in prison.
- 7:17Okay, what did Paul do in this passage?
- 7:20Paul has been essentially falsely accused.
- 7:23What's his response?
- 7:24His response is not to be a pushover,
- 7:26not to just roll over and take whatever
- 7:28is being thrown at him, but rather to
- 7:30make a kind of full-throated defense for
- 7:32his own character.
- 7:33So you see what he does.
- 7:35He appeals to the facts of the case.
- 7:37When he talks with Felix, he says, they
- 7:39cannot prove to you the charges they are
- 7:41now making against me.
- 7:42Then he also talks about his beliefs and
- 7:44his convictions.
- 7:45He says, you know, I have the same
- 7:46hope in God that these men themselves have,
- 7:48that there will be a resurrection of both
- 7:49the righteous and the wicked.
- 7:51So I strive always to keep my conscience
- 7:53clear before God and man.
- 7:55He's describing his own character.
- 7:57So he's appealing to the facts of the
- 7:59case, and he's describing his own character.
- 8:02And this is what he's doing, knowing that
- 8:04he is an emissary of Jesus Christ, a
- 8:06representative of Jesus the Messiah, in this ongoing
- 8:10dispute that's now involving both Jews and Gentiles
- 8:13and different authorities, etc.
- 8:15He believes the best thing he can do
- 8:17to serve the purposes of God is to
- 8:19defend his own character by appealing to the
- 8:22facts and describing his character accurately.
- 8:24I think that's a really compelling example of
- 8:27Christ-like self-advocacy.
- 8:29Paul realizes it's not going to be good
- 8:31for the purposes of God for me to
- 8:33admit anything false.
- 8:34It's not going to be good for the
- 8:35purposes of God for me to go along
- 8:36with these false accusations against me.
- 8:39I should engage the conflict and I should
- 8:40do it with full honesty and with a
- 8:42straightforward account of who I am and what
- 8:45I'm about.
- 8:47So I think an application for us would
- 8:49be if we're in a situation where our
- 8:51boss underestimates us, is there an opportunity to
- 8:55engage the conflict, to go talk to our
- 8:57boss about what we see or what we
- 9:00feel we're qualified for, to actually represent ourselves
- 9:04and our character forthrightly, to appeal to the
- 9:07facts of the case and to the reality
- 9:09of our own character in straightforward terms.
- 9:12That sometimes is the most Christ-like thing
- 9:14to do.
- 9:15That doesn't have to be motivated by pride
- 9:17or anything sinful.
- 9:19It can be the best way for you
- 9:21to work towards doing the best job you
- 9:23can.
- 9:23It's better for the mission of your organization
- 9:25for you to be able to add more
- 9:27value to the team by doing work that's
- 9:30more commensurate with your skill set.
- 9:32So if you can engage the conflict directly
- 9:34in order to do better work, that doesn't
- 9:38have to be a selfish thing.
- 9:39That can be a Christ-like thing.
- 9:40That can be a way of serving the
- 9:42purposes of God in the mission of your
- 9:44workplace.
- 9:45So just want to commend that.
- 9:47That we shouldn't have our ideas backwards about
- 9:50what humility means.
- 9:52Humility does not mean you never advocate for
- 9:54yourself.
- 9:54Humility does not mean that you somehow put
- 9:56yourself down or refuse to speak about your
- 9:58qualifications.
- 10:00Humility is about recognizing the truth about who
- 10:03you are in the light of God's grace.
- 10:07Pride thinks that we accomplish things by ourselves.
- 10:09Humility recognizes whatever I'm able to accomplish, it's
- 10:12by God's grace.
- 10:13Of course humility has other dimensions as well,
- 10:15but just for self- advocacy there's a
- 10:18way to do it that is Christ-like,
- 10:19that is humble, but that's also confident.
- 10:21So consider that.
- 10:22If that's your situation, is there an opportunity
- 10:24to engage the conflict?
- 10:25Again, depending on your workplace, depending on your
- 10:27boss, there may be more or less opportunity,
- 10:29but if there is, that could really be
- 10:31worthwhile.
- 10:32Okay, but that brings us to our second
- 10:34opportunity, which is letting love overcome resentment.
- 10:37Even though Paul advocated for himself in very
- 10:40eloquent terms appropriately, did it seem to do
- 10:43him any good in his circumstances?
- 10:45Not really!
- 10:47Felix left him in prison, and Felix also
- 10:49was corrupt.
- 10:50He was looking for a bribe from Paul.
- 10:52He was not actually administering things for the
- 10:54cause of justice.
- 10:56When he moves on to another position, he
- 10:58leaves Paul in prison as a favor to
- 11:00the Jews.
- 11:00So this guy is is corrupt, he's making
- 11:02decisions based on political motivations rather than on
- 11:05what's really just.
- 11:07Okay, and how does Paul respond?
- 11:08If I was in Paul's situation, I would
- 11:10be really resentful towards Felix.
- 11:12But what does Paul do?
- 11:14Paul loves Felix.
- 11:16Paul does what's good for Felix, right?
- 11:19So Felix is familiar with the way of
- 11:21Jesus, perhaps because of his Jewish wife, and
- 11:25so they have this conversation with Paul, and
- 11:28it says that he listened as Paul spoke
- 11:30about faith in Christ Jesus, righteousness, self-control,
- 11:34and the judgment to come.
- 11:36So Paul, while he's in this situation, is
- 11:39willing to essentially evangelize Felix to proclaim the
- 11:43good news to Felix, to say, here's what
- 11:45it means to put your faith in Jesus
- 11:46and to become his follower.
- 11:48Now, Felix isn't all about it.
- 11:49Felix doesn't have a lot of openness to
- 11:50that, so he shuts the conversation down.
- 11:53You wonder, though, what was a seed planted
- 11:55there?
- 11:55Maybe something with Felix's wife.
- 11:57But Paul, in the moment, he's being apostolic
- 12:00missionary.
- 12:01Paul, he's like, here's another human being who
- 12:03can hear the good news of Jesus Christ.
- 12:04I'm gonna love that human being by sharing
- 12:06the good news with them.
- 12:08Okay, so the situation, the application for us
- 12:10may also be very similar.
- 12:12Sometimes you advocate for yourself, sometimes you do
- 12:13your darndest to get to a better place,
- 12:17and guess what?
- 12:17Your circumstances are still compromised.
- 12:20You're still stuck in the job that you're
- 12:22overqualified for.
- 12:22Your boss still underestimates you, and the temptation
- 12:26there is to just feel so much resentment
- 12:28toward the boss who underestimates you.
- 12:30If they could just see who you really
- 12:32were and what you're really capable of, things
- 12:34could be so much better, and yet what's
- 12:36the opportunity?
- 12:37The opportunity is to let love overcome resentment.
- 12:42Instead of stewing in resentment, to ask, how
- 12:44can I love my boss in this situation,
- 12:47with all of its limitations?
- 12:49How can I love them?
- 12:51How can I seek their good?
- 12:53And this is a countercultural and counterintuitive approach.
- 12:56On that Managed by Narcissist subreddit, I doubt
- 12:59there's too many people asking, how do you
- 13:01love your narcissistic boss?
- 13:03Nobody thinks that way in our culture.
- 13:05When you're aggrieved, you hang on to your
- 13:07grievance, and you feel resentment, and you seek
- 13:09to get one over on the other person,
- 13:11or at least to get to a better
- 13:13situation.
- 13:14And of course, there's nothing wrong with getting
- 13:15to a better situation when God opens up
- 13:18that opportunity.
- 13:18But for as long as you are in
- 13:20your current situation, how can you love everyone
- 13:24around you, including the boss who underestimates you?
- 13:27And I think we get here to something
- 13:29else in Romans chapter 12, starting in verse
- 13:3217.
- 13:32Hear how he's speaking to this possible circumstance
- 13:35of resentment.
- 14:05Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome
- 14:08evil with good.
- 14:12Sometimes a bad boss or a boss who
- 14:14underestimates us can feel like an enemy, but
- 14:17then our call as disciples of Jesus is
- 14:18to love our enemies.
- 14:20If your enemy is hungry, feed him.
- 14:22If he is thirsty, give him something to
- 14:24drink.
- 14:25That's how God accomplishes his purposes through us
- 14:27as his disciples in that particular work situation.
- 14:31So think about that.
- 14:32How can you love your boss in the
- 14:35most practical terms?
- 14:36How can you give your boss something to
- 14:37drink, so to speak?
- 14:38Maybe literally.
- 14:39Maybe, maybe if you're swinging by Starbucks on
- 14:41the way to work, ask if your boss
- 14:43wants something.
- 14:43Now that could be seen as round-nosing,
- 14:44right?
- 14:45You got to figure out a way to
- 14:46do it that's authentic.
- 14:47But think about that.
- 14:49And sometimes it's helpful even to remind yourself
- 14:52to think about that.
- 14:52I do this.
- 14:53I think I've mentioned I do this.
- 14:54I put spiritual reminders into my project management
- 14:57software, the same software that I use to
- 14:59manage my tasks for work.
- 15:01I'll have a little reminder in there, like,
- 15:02encourage so-and-so.
- 15:04Can you put a reminder in there?
- 15:05Encourage your boss.
- 15:06The last thing we think about when someone
- 15:08annoys us is how we can praise them
- 15:10for something they're doing well.
- 15:11But I bet your boss, as flawed as
- 15:13they are, is doing something well.
- 15:15Can you ask God to give you insight
- 15:16into that and to speak a genuine word
- 15:18of encouragement to your boss to love and
- 15:20support them, to thank them for something they've
- 15:22done for you on the team?
- 15:24In doing this, you keep burning coals on
- 15:26his head.
- 15:26You participate in the purposes and the justice
- 15:28of God, even in the frustration you're in
- 15:31the middle of.
- 15:33So that's how we face a boss who
- 15:38underestimates us.
- 15:39We can engage the conflict with them, ask
- 15:41for more responsibility, ask for a different role,
- 15:44advocate for ourselves in a Christ-like manner.
- 15:47And even when that doesn't work, we can
- 15:49love them.
- 15:50No matter how frustrating our work is or
- 15:53our boss is, there's always an opportunity to
- 15:56love.
- 15:57Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome
- 16:00evil with good.
- 16:03Lord Jesus, thank you that love is always
- 16:05possible, even loving our enemies, even loving those
- 16:08people that really frustrate us.
- 16:11We ask for your grace to love our
- 16:13bosses with all their foibles and flaws.
- 16:16Do your work in us as we do
- 16:17our work with you.
- 16:19Amen.
- 16:23Thanks for listening.
