- 2:26US. Definitely check out Gunfighter
- 2:28Beer Co. I have very special guests.
- 2:30He and I have actually talked a lot.
- 2:32I don't think he and I have ever actually been on a show
- 2:34together, but he is the man behind the scenes that helps run
- 2:38military broadcast radio, helps make a success.
- 2:42He's actually taught me quite a bit as far as a little bit more
- 2:46of how to utilize Stream Yard a little bit better.
- 2:49So I don't look as quite like a goober as I usually do.
- 2:52But he helps with quite a bit of that.
- 2:54And I got the pleasure of being able to finally meet him face to
- 2:56face this year. And he is technically going to
- 3:00be my guest of the week. If I can find that little video
- 3:05of the special guest of the week partner, there it is.
- 3:09The interview of the week is brought to you by Jersey Mike's
- 3:14a sub above. All right, there he is.
- 3:22It's like took me a second. How are you?
- 3:26I'm good brother, how are you? Oh, you know, I, I can sit here
- 3:30and complain all day, but that ain't going to help nobody.
- 3:32So, you know, I say, hey, I figured I would, I figured I'd
- 3:37come in, you'd be, you know, you'd be serious on sports.
- 3:41And you know, I, I, I, I'd be a jokester like I like I always
- 3:45AM. Oh, absolutely.
- 3:46I mean, heck, to be honest with you, that's my personality.
- 3:49Most time is if there's ever a serious situation, I'm like, oh,
- 3:51I got to be the guy that makes the inappropriate joke to make
- 3:53somebody laugh. I got to do it.
- 3:55I just can't help it. But man, I I'm excited because
- 4:00we are, we are finally in the time of year where football is
- 4:04back. Now, as somebody very well put
- 4:07it, we get a little bit of an appetizer 'cause we have
- 4:09technically pre season football has already kicked off at the
- 4:12beginning of this month. But then we also have an
- 4:14appetizer as far as college football.
- 4:16Because Week 0 officially kicks off on Saturday, the biggest
- 4:20match up being UNC versus TCU over in Dublin, Ireland at 12:00
- 4:25PM Eastern on ESPN. Then the other big Power 4 match
- 4:29up is North Carolina State versus Virginia, which we'll get
- 4:32into. But then of course, like all
- 4:35offseason and as we get closer, we have to have that last little
- 4:38bit of drama thrown in there as far as sports goes.
- 4:41Deshawn Watson. Deshawn Watson, amidst all of
- 4:44his things, has been named quarterback number one to start
- 4:48the season for the Cleveland Browns.
- 4:50And then there's a little bit of an upset as far as the college
- 4:53football world because we have college football players
- 4:55returning back to college. Even though they technically
- 4:59went pro, even if it was only for, you know, the length of a
- 5:02cup of coffee, they still went pro nonetheless.
- 5:06But let let's dive into the first part that I know you're
- 5:09excited about. Joel Deshaun Watson named the
- 5:14starter for the Cleveland Browns amidst everything.
- 5:19Man, this, this is just it's such a mess.
- 5:21This was something that was talked about all last year.
- 5:24You know, who was going to be the starter for Cleveland?
- 5:26You know, Deshawn was hurt. You know, then it was a toss up
- 5:29between Shadur and Dylan Gabriel.
- 5:31Now we come into this year. Shadur, he he did the best with
- 5:35what he could. It wasn't like he was turning
- 5:37anybody's heads, but it it, it seemed like the team played
- 5:40better under him. Deshawn is healthy.
- 5:43They're paying him the money, whether he's on the roster,
- 5:45whether he's not on the roster, all of that money is guaranteed.
- 5:49You know, the media says no, don't starting.
- 5:52The fans say don't starting Deshawn Watson even said don't
- 5:55start me. And the Browns said, you know
- 5:57what? This is our guy Joe, I know you
- 6:00are a resident Denver Broncos fan, but you're you're pretty
- 6:03much a sports fan in general. What?
- 6:05What's your thoughts on this whole Deshaun Watson?
- 6:09Well, the first thing is, and just like any relationship, even
- 6:13in a football team, you, you enter the relationship the same
- 6:18way you exit the relationship. You know, it was when he went,
- 6:22when he was at Houston, you know, he he thought he was going
- 6:26to get bypassed with all like the penalties and all the what
- 6:30we'll call it the drama, OK. And now he's in Cleveland and,
- 6:35you know, you know, he sits there and he's complaining to
- 6:39the fan base, which you don't ever do that, OK, you, you, you
- 6:44sit there and complain with the fan base.
- 6:46Oh, OK. All right.
- 6:47Well, you know, when I got hurt, when my ankles got torn up, you
- 6:51know, you got, you guys booed me, brother, I hate to tell you,
- 6:54but they didn't Boo you because you got hurt.
- 6:57They didn't Boo you just because of your past.
- 7:00They booed you because right now the way you're playing is
- 7:05terrible. It is terrible.
- 7:07It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it doesn't
- 7:12matter if, if, if, if you've done great in college, that
- 7:16doesn't translate over to the pros.
- 7:18And that's what people that's what people seem to failed to
- 7:23realize. Just because you was an All Star
- 7:27in college doesn't mean that it's going to reciprocate in the
- 7:32NFL. And we're we're we're we're
- 7:34seeing that now. You know, we kind of saw that
- 7:37when Tim Tebow was playing. You know, I and Ji.
- 7:43Know. I know she's excited.
- 7:45Oh yes, yes, now I get to hear you guys trade insults all
- 7:51through college. I've it's going to.
- 7:56Be a great time. But you know, I, I, I, but I'll
- 8:02tell you, you know, I, I feel, I, I do feel bad for the
- 8:09Cleveland Brown thing because, you know, I, I do feel strongly
- 8:15that Baker Mayfield was really a good quarterback for them.
- 8:21You know, stuff happens. You know, the Cleveland Browns
- 8:28kind of stepped on their, you know, special purpose and, you
- 8:35know, they just, they keep on stepping on their special
- 8:39purpose. You know, and I, I tell you
- 8:41what, one of the things that I do want to highlight and I, I
- 8:44mean, you know, I, I know this is like one of the top stories,
- 8:48but you know, I, I think it's a huge thing, the spotlight to
- 8:52shed some light that the Dallas Cowboys, they have, they have
- 8:59drafted their first Navajo Indian.
- 9:02Like I did not know that, but the NFL now has the Navajo
- 9:10player. And you know, the reason why I
- 9:12think that's such a big deal is because, you know, it doesn't
- 9:16matter. It doesn't matter what you are
- 9:18like minority wise, you know, sometimes, sometimes you feel
- 9:24alone in a league, you know, and now, now we, we've, we've, we
- 9:33have this Navajo Indian that has embraced it.
- 9:36And I, I, I love the way he brought in the team, you know,
- 9:42say, hey, you know, we play as a team, we fight as a team kind of
- 9:45thing. And I, I think it's very
- 9:48inspirational, you know, especially since till this day,
- 9:55the, the, the natives kind of they, they, they kind of get the
- 10:00cold shoulder every once in a while.
- 10:01So I'm, I'm, I'm glad that this happened.
- 10:04But yeah, you know, he needs to, he, he needs to really just, he
- 10:11needs to just be quiet and let his talk be on the field instead
- 10:17of being on the the podium. Because you know as well as I
- 10:22do, nobody cares what you say. They hear what you do.
- 10:26Yeah, and hopefully I don't. I'm not butchering his name.
- 10:30If, if I do and anybody happens to know, please correct me.
- 10:33The Dallas Cowboys player who's a offensive tackle is Shias
- 10:40Peete or Pete. I don't know.
- 10:42It's Pete. It looks like Pete to me, but
- 10:44maybe it's announced any differently.
- 10:45Don't. Don't.
- 10:46Have to me, I'm a tweeting chef and so episodes, I've been
- 10:51through some people's names, you know?
- 10:53So, so if I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me.
- 10:56Anybody in the comments can feel free to correct me, but I need
- 10:58you to spell it out like I'm six, OK?
- 11:02When I say spell out, I mean tell me how to enunciate it.
- 11:04I'll just give you the letters. But no, I do agree, I think for
- 11:08Cleveland Browns fans, you, you've been stuck in this
- 11:12perpetual loop ever since the Cleveland Browns came back to
- 11:16the city as a franchise. You know, it's oh, we're
- 11:18rebuilding. We're going to build back to the
- 11:20future. We're we're rebuilding.
- 11:21We're rebuilding. And that's not even counting the
- 11:24turmoil that they went through when the Baltimore Ravers Ravens
- 11:30took took Cleveland Browns team. Exactly.
- 11:33Same same thing that happened with the Baltimore.
- 11:41But it but it's one of those they they've been quote UN quote
- 11:45rebuilding for so long. It's been such a struggle and
- 11:48such a turmoil for Browns fans. You know, it's like, OK, we've
- 11:51been doing this for over 30 years.
- 11:53At what point does the rebuild stop?
- 11:56Because you keep you keep saying it's a rebuild and it's like
- 11:59we're going to just toss everything and do it again.
- 12:01And you never give anything enough time to sit there and
- 12:04establish. But you brought up the point of
- 12:06Baker Mayfield. I felt like when they had Kevin
- 12:09Stefanski, you had Baker. It's like, OK, you finally kept
- 12:13continuity as far as a coaching quarterback goes.
- 12:15Baker, you know, he's a little cocky.
- 12:17He's got a little swag to him. You know, he's going to trash
- 12:19talk. You know, he's going to have
- 12:21some really good performances. He's going to have some really
- 12:23down performances. But it seemed like he truly
- 12:26embodied and truly embraced Cleveland and he kind of gave
- 12:28them that swagger that they were missing.
- 12:30As far as, hey, I'm I may not be the best quarterback, but I'm
- 12:34going to tell you I'm the best quarterback.
- 12:36And when I'm going out there and his quote, when I feel
- 12:38dangerous, like everybody's in trouble, you know, the poor dude
- 12:42gets hurt. He tries to play through an
- 12:43injury like how most fans would probably want him to.
- 12:46As far as, hey, we need you out there to, you know, get to keep
- 12:49us competitive, to keep us relevant.
- 12:51You know, unfortunately that ends up falling through.
- 12:54And you know, Baker now is in Tampa as a starter.
- 12:57But the the other issue too, that I think Deshawn, I don't
- 13:01know if he realizes this or not, not only are the fans are really
- 13:06judging you primarily on your past because that's all they
- 13:09have to go off of. You've been there since 2023.
- 13:12If I remember correctly, you've played 19 games for him and in
- 13:17the 19 games that you've played in the three seasons you've been
- 13:21there have not been good. You there's little to no
- 13:25evidence of any type of positivity as far as, you know,
- 13:29quarterback play. Like if they're playing and
- 13:30they're losing, OK that you know, that's one thing, but it
- 13:34it's not even close. I mean, they're getting
- 13:35absolutely destroyed. He's not there for the last year
- 13:38and a half as far as being available to play.
- 13:41So the only thing the fans had to go off of is OK, we have
- 13:44crappy quarterback play and you had a whole lot of drama in
- 13:47Houston as far as allegations and what not go.
- 13:49So there's so there. There's not a lot for them to go
- 13:52off of. For sure, you know, and I'll
- 13:55tell you what, like that, that movie that they made draft day
- 13:58or whatever, boy did they subscribe the Cleveland Browns.
- 14:01To this day, I, I think the Cleveland Browns, I think where
- 14:05they're going wrong is every time they do a draft or, or, or,
- 14:09or something like they, they have to make like a, like a
- 14:13showbiz pick or something. We kind of like draft day.
- 14:16You know, I, I think they're bad luck started when and, and it
- 14:22put them behind 10 or 12 years, I think was when they picked
- 14:26Johnny Manziel. I mean, we remember that, you
- 14:29know, that that guy was waiting forever.
- 14:32I, I, I thought it was going to be a skull.
- 14:34You know, he was supposed to be like a first round and they just
- 14:37waited and waited and waited and it was things like that, you
- 14:41know, because even though teams can work together, it's really
- 14:48hard being in a locker room when the it's a circus.
- 14:52It really is. You know, football players are
- 14:57no different than other people. When somebody starts getting a
- 15:01lot of attention and they don't feel like, you know, you know,
- 15:05they're, they're they're getting any Atta boys or any support,
- 15:09Well, then you know, they're like they I hate to say that
- 15:14they don't guard them as much, but they don't take care of them
- 15:18as much if they're not taking care of them.
- 15:20And we we saw that in the NFLI mean we've hell, you're a Colts
- 15:26fan. You saw that with Andrew Luck.
- 15:28You know, Andrew Luck could have been great, but the ownership,
- 15:36the manager, the leaders, they, they, they kind of ruined that.
- 15:41They really did. Yeah, and it was funny.
- 15:44I don't, I don't know if you've seen it or if you, if you ever
- 15:46want to take. I think it's about a 5 minute
- 15:49clip. The the interview itself I think
- 15:51is like 2 hours. Eric Ebron, one of the former
- 15:54Titans for the Colts, is in it and he's being interviewed by
- 15:57some other players, I think a Titans player and a couple
- 16:00others. He actually talked about his
- 16:02last, you know, his last year in India and his last year with
- 16:06Luck. And he's like, you know, Luck
- 16:08and I are both in there. We're both hurt.
- 16:09Like we're both rehabbing. He's like we're going through
- 16:12practices and, you know, we're just getting absolutely crushed
- 16:14offensive and defensively he goes.
- 16:16But then Luck comes in, he goes, man, he comes in for a drive.
- 16:19He goes, that's my quarterback, everybody's height.
- 16:21And he said that it was weird too, because Luck apparently did
- 16:26not trust the team doctors that apparently he hired his own
- 16:29medical staff to come in and evaluating, make sure that he
- 16:33was good. And and what's to your point for
- 16:35the leadership? What does that say when you're
- 16:37star quarterback that is replacing another star
- 16:40quarterback in Peyton Manning? What does that say when he's
- 16:43like, yeah, I don't trust your medical staff and their
- 16:45judgement. Like I I need you to figure it
- 16:48out or do something. You know, I, I, I, I think
- 16:50that's something usual. I think that all NFL players are
- 16:54like that to a point, because we've seen it at the end of like
- 16:58the five year draft that, you know, they they can, they can
- 17:02take that extra option or whatever.
- 17:04You know, I mean, the people getting mad at these football
- 17:09players and say, oh, you know, he's just getting paid too much.
- 17:13OK, well, you know, I I get that, but it's not your money.
- 17:17It it the NF LS money. Who who cares how much he's
- 17:20getting paid? You know, is, is he producing?
- 17:23You know, for the longest time here in Denver, really good
- 17:28example would be vomiting. You know, Bob Miller has had a
- 17:33successful career. He's went to this place, he's
- 17:36went to that place and you know now recently before he before he
- 17:41went and and signed with the I, I believe the Washington
- 17:44Redskins or was it the Dallas Cowboys?
- 17:48I. Forgot Cowboys.
- 17:49Cowboys are the newest, yeah. Yeah, so before he went there,
- 17:53you know, everybody here in Denver's, you know, Denver's
- 17:56really bad about bandwagon fans. We, we, we really are.
- 18:00And when he when he was getting ready to, you know, come out,
- 18:05you know, hey, this will probably be my last year.
- 18:08Everybody's like, hey, we need Bob Miller.
- 18:10No, we don't. People don't understand that,
- 18:13you know, he's not the same person that he was when he was
- 18:19here. There's a reason why we got rid
- 18:21of him. You know, everybody sits there
- 18:23and you know, when free agency comes, you know, before draft,
- 18:28you know, and, and we get this player and we get this player.
- 18:31I, I forget what player it was And, and I met him as a person,
- 18:36but he was really good. He was a, he was a 49er and he
- 18:39went over to the Denver Broncos. We, he, he, he played in the
- 18:45game in the Super Bowl, he caught one pass and it was the
- 18:49only pass I've ever seen in the Super Bowl that you go with -8
- 18:52yards. You know, this is supposed to be
- 18:54an excellent receiver. But see, The thing is, is just
- 18:58because they're an excellent receiver here doesn't mean
- 19:02they're going to be an excellent receiver there.
- 19:05And I think people failed to realize it's kind of like going
- 19:08to Walmart. You'd think that the vegetable
- 19:11aisle is here at Walmart, but all Walmarts are different.
- 19:15So it's it, it, it takes a while for them to, you know,
- 19:20accommodate, you know, where the locker room is, where football,
- 19:25you know, football field is, where the training room is.
- 19:28You know, some people that might not be a big deal.
- 19:31But for football players, especially in the, you know,
- 19:33well, that's a huge deal, especially those that are very,
- 19:38very superstitious. I know a football player that
- 19:41never changed his boxers for the whole season because they were
- 19:44winning. OK, so they're very
- 19:46superstitious. Hey, most most fans usually are
- 19:49too is like when that's true, when I would watch football,
- 19:52it's like there there was some seasons it was like if I watch
- 19:54the game, they would win. If I don't watch the game, they
- 19:57they'll win and I'm like, well, I guess I'm not watching their
- 20:00games this year. But but no, I do think there
- 20:03comes a point with a lot of fans and.
- 20:06You have to realize at the end of the day, all of these
- 20:08organizations is a business like they are in it to make money.
- 20:11Right. And, and, and everybody wants
- 20:14these players to take like a hometown discount and stuff like
- 20:17that. But it's like, you know, you
- 20:20wouldn't take a discount if you, you know, at your job, you know
- 20:24it, you know, it's like, it's like telling somebody that's,
- 20:28you know, expecting to have like 25 or $26 an hour, you go to
- 20:33them and say, Hey, we want you back.
- 20:34But we're going to give you $15.00 an hour.
- 20:39Congratulations, you've been promoted.
- 20:42Yep, that kind of thing. You know, it's like we, we can't
- 20:46fault him for that. No, and and part of it's the
- 20:48nostalgia and and that too, it's like, you know, for Von Miller,
- 20:51you know, you think about it, he's towards the end of his
- 20:53career. Oh yeah.
- 20:54It's like he he's going to try to get every little bit and
- 20:57every, you know, dime penny that he can.
- 20:59And I don't blame him because it's like, and not saying he
- 21:01can't potentially have another career successfully, if he wants
- 21:04to go to like broadcasting or color commentary or whatever,
- 21:07whatever path he decides to go to, he'll he'll be successful.
- 21:10But nonetheless, though, it's like, hey, while I still can and
- 21:13while I can still do a play in the game that I grew up playing
- 21:15and that I love, I'm absolutely going to do it.
- 21:19But no, I mean it, I do agree. And it it will be interesting to
- 21:22see how, you know, how Cleveland handles this whole Deshawn
- 21:27situation, because for him, he's already got his money.
- 21:29Like they're they're already set and solid as far as that goes.
- 21:33But but to kind of bring up to your point, though, as far as
- 21:37you know, guys trying to get as much as they can as far as money
- 21:41goes, there's been a huge stink in the football world,
- 21:44especially in college football about college players returning
- 21:49back to college from the pros, especially in the pre season.
- 21:54Now the two players that have been in the news most recently,
- 21:59both ironically former Ole Miss players by my LSU Tigers head
- 22:04coach Lane Kiffin, Xavion Harris and Daquan Wright, both were on
- 22:09pre season rosters. I believe it is Daquan Wright is
- 22:15he's going to clear waivers as of Wednesday if no team picks
- 22:18him up. And then if he does, he will be
- 22:21able to go back to LSU to play football after technically being
- 22:26on a pre season roster, playing in the pre season and going back
- 22:31to college. Now, I do want to say because a
- 22:34lot of people have kind of made a stink about this.
- 22:36The Big 10 even announced they were going to pass the bill and
- 22:39they ended up passing it a short bit ago.
- 22:41Basically any player that goes to the NFL, whether it's draft,
- 22:45whether it's pre season, whatever the case may be,
- 22:47they're not allowed to return back to college football, at
- 22:49least in the Big 10. And I do want to clarify
- 22:53something on this is that this rule, well, this whole entire
- 22:58situation only applies football wise to like 16 guys.
- 23:03It's like 100 athletes across sports, like all across college,
- 23:07college athletics. But football wise, it's only
- 23:09like 16 guys. And basically this comes from
- 23:12the class of 2022. They kind of feel slighted that
- 23:15basically the COVID class. And I believe 2021, they get the
- 23:19extra year because of COVID, they got an extra year, couple
- 23:22years to be able to play football, college football a
- 23:24little bit longer. And then they of course passed
- 23:28the rule starting. I can't remember when the rule
- 23:31officially starts. I believe it's 2023 is when it
- 23:35starts that basically once you come into college football, you
- 23:40only have five years maximum play.
- 23:43Basically the the oldest age you can be coming out of college
- 23:46football is 24. So they're they're a little bit
- 23:51peeved that, hey, we were kind of that middle child that isn't
- 23:55getting the exception to the rule.
- 23:57So there's been a few courts in Colorado, There's been a court
- 24:00in Louisiana. All of them have basically filed
- 24:02temporary restraining orders against the NCAA to say, hey, we
- 24:07believe that we should be able to play.
- 24:09Judges have signed off on it. So therefore, these guys are
- 24:12able to come back to college football.
- 24:14Now, Joel, I don't know how much college football you watch, but
- 24:17at least from your perspective though there there's kind of
- 24:20this unwritten rule that once you GoPro, you don't come back
- 24:25to college, no matter how good you were, no matter, you know,
- 24:28how much fans might want you to come back.
- 24:31You know, you, you just can't do it.
- 24:33I agree with that. I, I agree with that.
- 24:35I also agree that, you know, and I know, I know that people are
- 24:40going to come at me in the comments about this, but I also
- 24:44do agree that, you know, Friday's for high school,
- 24:49Saturdays for college and Sundays for for NFL football.
- 24:55Now, I'm just like any other fan.
- 24:57I love football. I do.
- 24:59I love football. Do I like football on Mondays?
- 25:02Hell yeah. Do I like footballs on
- 25:04Thursdays? Hell yeah.
- 25:06Do I like Thurs? Do you know, do I like Sunday
- 25:08football? Hell yeah.
- 25:09I love all that. But even though I like it, I can
- 25:14tell you that the quality of the football performing since they
- 25:20started all these different days and ever since they started, you
- 25:26know, flying them to England and and doing all these games and
- 25:32stuff, like I find the quality of football very lacking.
- 25:38Like I don't see the I I don't want to say the hard hits, but
- 25:43like I don't see I don't see the motivation.
- 25:46I don't see the running. I don't know.
- 25:48I don't see the like, you know, just just going at it.
- 25:51You know, I don't see that anymore.
- 25:54I really don't. I think the the the one even the
- 26:01Denver Broncos, like in the left there ahead a bunch of
- 26:04touchdowns. Like, I don't see any like kind
- 26:09of, you know, plays and stuff. And I, I really do feel, feel
- 26:14that Thursday Night Football has watered down the NFL to a, a, a
- 26:20certain bit, you know, and if they want to do overseas
- 26:25football, that that's fine. That's what I thought.
- 26:28Like what the UFLAFLXFL, whatever you want to call it,
- 26:34that's what I thought they were for, you know, they, they were
- 26:37for kind of like a, kind of like a summer camp, you know,
- 26:41learning to be a pro kind of thing.
- 26:44But a lot of things have changed.
- 26:47A lot of things have changed. And I know the big, the, the big
- 26:52thing that they changed or no, it was last year, big thing that
- 26:57they changed was the the way the kickoffs were.
- 27:01Oh yeah, yeah. You know, and this is what I
- 27:03don't like about that, Tony. I don't like that they keep
- 27:10changing the NFL rules like you should have rules for high
- 27:16school and those rules should trickle down up to the NFL.
- 27:23You know, there there shouldn't be any rule change.
- 27:26You know, I mean, we're still kicking off regular at high
- 27:30school and then when you go to pro, it's like, what the Hell's
- 27:32this? You know, they, they keep
- 27:36changing the football game and I really like the leather heads.
- 27:43You know, I really like that form of football.
- 27:46But they, they just, they keep changing it.
- 27:49They keep changing the finesse of it and it's just not as
- 27:53entertaining. Yeah.
- 27:56And I, I don't disagree. And I think for, I think for
- 27:58part of this too is, you know, the UFL and whatnot, like you
- 28:04said, I think it's good for a good in between it's and, and
- 28:08some people may agree with this, some may not.
- 28:10And hopefully nobody takes offense to it.
- 28:12I kind of see football as like a drug like, and you got to get
- 28:15your fix. So it's like you have your fix
- 28:17from basically the end of August, beginning of September
- 28:20all the way through February when the Super Bowl ends.
- 28:23And then it's like you're sitting there and you get a
- 28:25couple weeks off, like, OK, I'm off.
- 28:26And then end of February, beginning of March comes, it's
- 28:29like, damn, I miss football. Kind of kind of really want
- 28:32football back. And maybe you can get the you
- 28:35can get it soothed a little bit through, you know, March Madness
- 28:38and the NCAA Tournament. And then it's like, OK, after
- 28:41that it's like, oh crap, I got to have my fix.
- 28:44Like now, Now what's then they make the UFL for spring
- 28:47football. And you know, like you said, the
- 28:50the quality just isn't there as much because it's, you know, a
- 28:53bunch of guys that they finished college.
- 28:55Maybe they're they weren't necessarily great for an NFL
- 28:59roster. Maybe they weren't able to make
- 29:00an NFL roster. So this is kind of a chance for
- 29:03them to to to have a second, second opportunity to maybe make
- 29:06a professional roster again moving forward.
- 29:11But I will say too, you know, you talked about how the NFL has
- 29:14changed as far as the rules with kickoff and whatnot.
- 29:17That's what a lot of people are aggravated with college football
- 29:19right now. And especially like this
- 29:21situation where you have guys that and I'll be honest, I'm a
- 29:25little bit more for this specific situation in them
- 29:29coming back to college football. And the reason being is if it
- 29:34just just to make it easier as far as timeline and obviously
- 29:37there's little stuff in between there.
- 29:40Most of these guys last played football January time frame and
- 29:44they're not technically playing football again until beginning
- 29:47of August. Now obviously there's rookie
- 29:49mini camps, there's training camps, there's all that in
- 29:51between there. But you know, let's just say for
- 29:53the sake of arguments purposes, it's only 6 months removed from
- 29:57playing college football. Now, if they had been in the NFL
- 29:59like 2 years and then they try to come back like, no, you,
- 30:02you've already moved on. Like you, you just kind of take
- 30:05the take the loss like your, your college days are behind
- 30:08you, you're in the pros. You you got to move forward with
- 30:10what you got. Well, hell, we're not even doing
- 30:13physical activity, but when we broadcast, Tony, if we take, if
- 30:17we take a day off from like 2 broadcasts or we're gone for
- 30:21like 2 weeks, like you're, you're resting.
- 30:24I forgot to do this or something.
- 30:27You know, you have to, you have to do a repetition.
- 30:30And I mean, it's the same thing in, in the NFL.
- 30:33You know, I, I don't really have an opinion on once they go to
- 30:38the NFL, they can come back to college.
- 30:42I don't have a real opinion on it because you know, like that's
- 30:49assuming this isn't going to work or this, this can't work.
- 30:54And we don't want to assume. We, we, we want to know.
- 30:58So the only way you're going to find out is if you test it kind
- 31:02of like I think last year they finally tested in college.
- 31:06The the players would get stipend off of like the ticket
- 31:10sales and stuff. It.
- 31:12Was starting that last year, you know, and I mean, you know,
- 31:17don't knock it until you try it, you know, so it might work.
- 31:21Well, and I, I think for a lot of people too, they, they don't
- 31:24like how much college football has changed because, you know,
- 31:27again, I don't know how much you follow college football.
- 31:29College football is a very tradition based sport.
- 31:33Like for the longest time conferences were primarily based
- 31:37off of geography. So it was like the Atlantic
- 31:40Coast Conference. The ACC is like primarily
- 31:42everybody's on the East Coast, but now they've added California
- 31:46and Stanford all the way over on the West Coast.
- 31:48And it's like, wait a minute. They don't belong in the ACC.
- 31:51Or like, you know, the, the Big 10, you know, is primarily A
- 31:55Midwestern conference. But now they have Maryland and
- 31:58Rutgers on the East Coast, but then they also have Oregon,
- 32:01Washington, and then Southern Californians like, wait a
- 32:03minute. No, no, no, no, no.
- 32:04This, this doesn't make any sense.
- 32:07So for them, when they see guys leave and then it's like they
- 32:11get to come back, you know, people are kind of up in arms
- 32:14about it. And, and like I said, it's only
- 32:16for a small number of players and everybody's kind of freaking
- 32:20out that it's the end of the world.
- 32:21And, and don't get it twisted, there's still a lot of issues in
- 32:23college football that need to be addressed and fixed As far as
- 32:26you know, it's just the Wild West as far as whoever has the
- 32:29most money to spend on buying players can basically do it.
- 32:33And there's nothing you can do to stop it.
- 32:35And you know, you was asking me like, you know, you don't know
- 32:38how, how much of college football like, hey, I used to
- 32:42follow college football religiously when, when, when I
- 32:47was in high school, like the like the big team, you know, of
- 32:51course in Indiana, Notre Dame, like that, that's the that's the
- 32:54cream of the crop. And, you know, I lost a lot of
- 32:58respect for college that year. I, I believe Lou Holtz had just,
- 33:06he, he just exited as a coach and it was a new coach and Notre
- 33:11team, Notre Dame, like they lost every game.
- 33:14They were like 2 and 12 or something like that.
- 33:16But they still got the chance to go to the bowl.
- 33:19And it's like, wait a minute, hold up.
- 33:21You're telling me that this guy doesn't, these guys don't even
- 33:24have a winning team and you guys are sending them to the bowl
- 33:28because they can bring in money. And ever since then, like I, I,
- 33:31I just, I can't, I can't watch football.
- 33:35And and if I'm not mistaken, last year that same situation
- 33:40came down the line for what was it?
- 33:43Was it Alabama, Miami, Miami. OK, yeah, Miami.
- 33:48So, you know, that's what I mean.
- 33:50Like they, they, they they need to have something organized or
- 33:56something kind of like the NFL that because that shit won't fly
- 34:00in the NFL. Why is it flying in college?
- 34:03But again, you know, we keep changing rules in the, in the,
- 34:09in the football era and we're, you know, we're, we're still
- 34:13kicking off regular in high school.
- 34:16In college, yeah, The kickoff is the same in college, too.
- 34:19That's what I mean. So, you know, it's just I, I
- 34:23don't like it. I kind of blame it all on Rodger
- 34:27Goodell, because Rodger Goodell, he's not acting like a
- 34:31commissioner for the Football League.
- 34:33He's he's acting like a a pimp when it comes to, you know, the,
- 34:39the team of the stuff. You know, how can I get the top
- 34:43dollar That that that's how it is.
- 34:46And apparently that that is the primary reason.
- 34:49So apparently he got another raise.
- 34:51And I heard recently, I think the math of what he's making is
- 34:54like $70 million a year of a raise that he got from the
- 34:58owners. Because basically like every
- 35:01single year since he's taken over, their profits have just
- 35:04continued to grow and grow and grow as far as margins go.
- 35:08So I mean, yeah, he he absolutely, he runs it.
- 35:12I will say he's not as because I am not a fan of Goodell either.
- 35:16I've I've not been a fan of him for a long time.
- 35:18Who? Likes Goodell like.
- 35:20The the owners do, there's like 32 owners that like him because
- 35:23they keep keeping him. Yeah, the owners are going to
- 35:26like him because they put money in his pocket, but like nobody
- 35:30else is. Nobody else likes him, you know.
- 35:34Because he came into the league, you know, the league was, you
- 35:36know, in a turmoil. They had disciplinary issues.
- 35:39So he came in to basically be the the big bad sheriff that was
- 35:42going to clean everything up. But there was just there was so
- 35:45much inconsistencies and stuff that was punished on guys.
- 35:49And it's like, is it really that deep or you just want to
- 35:52basically, you know, whip your whip your junk out on the table
- 35:55and say I'm the, I'm the big dog in in the room.
- 35:58And, and now, yeah, it's, it's like he doesn't do that as much
- 36:01anymore. And now it's just that, hey, I'm
- 36:03in the, I'm in the money making business.
- 36:05Like, like you pointed out, as far as you know, hey, let's have
- 36:08a game. You know, again, Monday Night
- 36:09Football, it's classic love Monday Night Football, same, you
- 36:12know, all day Sunday, you know, from 12/12 o'clock Eastern all
- 36:15the way to, you know, like midnight, basically when Sunday
- 36:18Night Football comes to an end, it's like that that's 12 hours
- 36:21of football and it's beautiful. But then like you said, it's
- 36:24like Thursday Night Football and especially, you know, they even
- 36:27started pointing on the Internet and Amazon and you can even hear
- 36:30it in the color commentators voice.
- 36:31It's like, hey, Thursday Night Football game, we have the one
- 36:35in 10 Titans versus like the one in 10 Jaguars.
- 36:38It's like, yeah, this is a crap game that nobody wants to watch.
- 36:43But then like you said too, they're doing it overseas and
- 36:46they're getting great pops from overseas.
- 36:48But here's the thing I think they need to realize is you're
- 36:51getting those pops overseas because it doesn't happen very
- 36:54often because they're not used to that.
- 36:56Exactly. And it's like anything, the more
- 36:58you do it, the less it's going to be like, like, it was cool
- 37:02like five years ago when you would come here every, you know,
- 37:04only once or twice a year. Now you come here every other
- 37:07game. And they're not thinking about
- 37:09the players, you know, just, you know, take a Hall of Famer like
- 37:13Emmett Smith, OK, Emmett Smith, he played, I think what was it,
- 37:17910, eleven years as a running back, Hall of Fame, right?
- 37:22You're lucky if you have a running back now that goes over
- 37:25five years because of the game increase, because of the
- 37:32Thursday night games, because of overseas, you know, and the, the
- 37:38travelling, the travelling that makes a big deal.
- 37:42Let let me tell her, any football fans that are watching,
- 37:46whenever you see a team going against another team, like
- 37:51automatically put it at 50% because there's a good chance
- 37:56that that home team is is going to win the game because they
- 37:59don't have to do any travelling. They don't have to go through
- 38:03any like superstitious, in fact, true story.
- 38:10Matt Prater. Matt Prater was a kicker for the
- 38:13Denver Broncos for the longest time.
- 38:16And Matt Prater, I was, I was good friends with him and he was
- 38:22a he was a fan of the Hawk. In fact, like when game time
- 38:27came, his parents would always call him, say, hey, you're going
- 38:32to have a good game. We just saw a Hawk.
- 38:35You know, they used to do that every single time.
- 38:40He used to have Hawks and stuff on his locker, on his necklace.
- 38:46That's why he always saw that necklace around him.
- 38:48You know, he was very superstitious when it came to
- 38:53Hawks. And he's not the only football
- 38:56player. A lot of them are like that.
- 39:01But yeah, it, it's, it's just so it is weird though.
- 39:05It, it, it's weird what, what fans, what fans do as far as
- 39:09superstitions, even like you said, what football players do
- 39:12as far as how they, how they take care of themselves, how
- 39:14they prepare. But but it is also interesting
- 39:17too. Somebody brought up the point, I
- 39:19think it was Brady Quinn, maybe on his on his show on Fox Sports
- 39:24radio. He they brought up the point
- 39:26that it you you have a new new entire breed of athletes that
- 39:32you know, these guys are, you know, 6 foot 5.
- 39:35They're like two 35240 and they're running, you know, track
- 39:40meet numbers of like ultimate track Olympians of, you know, 4
- 39:44fours, 4 threes. It's like, holy moly, a dude
- 39:47that size and that speed should not be moving at that kind of a
- 39:52base. But but it's also and, and
- 39:56you've watched football a little bit longer than I have, you
- 39:59know, not to not to date you or anything like that.
- 40:02But. But it but it does seem like to
- 40:06an extent the like the quality of football player has kind of
- 40:10gone down because when when these guys are healthy, they are
- 40:14some of the best athletes out there as far as you know, the
- 40:16numbers that they're able to put up and what they're able to
- 40:18produce. But like you said, how many
- 40:21times do you see a running back now that can make it 12 years in
- 40:24Elite and still be productive? I mean.
- 40:27I mean, you look at, you know, somebody like Ezekiel Elliott,
- 40:30who you know, he was hot coming out of college and he was hot
- 40:33his first few years in the NFL. But if you, if you look at his
- 40:36statistics, it's like every single year his his yards per
- 40:39carry would start to start to go down into a point where it's
- 40:42like, hey, you're, you're barely getting two to three yards of
- 40:46carry whenever you run and. Look at look at CJ Anderson.
- 40:51Like that kid could run. But I mean let's face it, he
- 40:55only really lasted 3 years. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:58You know, and he had a huge loads of concussions, you know,
- 41:06and hey, yeah, the NFL has changed the rules to, you know,
- 41:10help concussions. How about we and instead of
- 41:15changing rules, how about we invest more in the training and
- 41:22you know, you know, playing safe and, and different things like
- 41:27that, you know, and that's one thing exactly when you know,
- 41:31we're talking about, you know, the high school rules are
- 41:34different than the NFL rules. You know, if, if, if you're used
- 41:40to, if you're used to wreck marching 10 miles and you go 20
- 41:46miles, it's going to take a little bit longer.
- 41:50Absolutely. So yeah, I, like I said, it's
- 41:54one of those I always enjoy football.
- 41:56I'm excited to see, you know, ultimately what what comes of
- 41:59this season, especially the NFL, because I feel like honestly,
- 42:02the the NFL is more wide open now than what I feel like it has
- 42:06been in a very, very long time. Because I'm interested to see
- 42:11how Indiana University bounces back this year now that they
- 42:17lost their quarterback. And I'm especially interested in
- 42:22seeing I. I can't pronounce his name, go
- 42:24figure, but he. You know he was drafted to the
- 42:27Raiders. Fernando Mendoza.
- 42:30Yeah, I'm interested to see how he does.
- 42:35I, I really am, you know, he so every time he talks, he sounds
- 42:40like a very positive player, you know, have a little bit of a
- 42:45sense of humor. Not I wouldn't say he's cocky.
- 42:49I would say he's confident and I, I, I would say that he's
- 42:53pretty humble, But I'm interested in seeing how some of
- 42:57these, you know, some of these guys, you know, come out, come,
- 43:02you know, just come out playing. Yeah, he's he's also one.
- 43:07I want to see how he does because this will also be our
- 43:09first true, true insight to what does the success of Tom Brady
- 43:16look like post NFL? Like we already see him
- 43:19announcing, you know, you know, games on Fox as a as a color
- 43:23commentator. But now that he's a partial
- 43:25owner of the Raiders, you know, how much of a hand did he have
- 43:29in picking Fernando? And then how much of a hand does
- 43:31he have now as a partial owner of Hey, you know, this is the
- 43:35tips and tricks I'm going to give you of what I did when I
- 43:38was playing. Like this is how you need to do
- 43:40this. This is how, you know, this is
- 43:43going to kind of be the first chance of to see how does Brady
- 43:48move into that role of basically what Bill Belichick did for so
- 43:52many years of I'm going to find a guy, we're going to plug him
- 43:55into this system and we're going to make it work.
- 43:58Because, you know, as we've as we've started to learn now, it
- 44:02was a whole lot more of Tom making it work on the field than
- 44:04it was just Bill Belichick, you know, picking the players,
- 44:07especially during Tom was able to have more success after he
- 44:11left. And Bill has kind of since
- 44:12fallen off. But I'm glad you brought that up
- 44:15because two teams that actually tie in with this, North
- 44:20Carolina, who is now hosted by Bill, who's now coached by Bill
- 44:24Belichick, as well as they take on TCU and Dublin, Ireland on
- 44:29Saturday on ESPN at 12:00 PM Eastern.
- 44:32Their former quarterback is now the quarterback at Indiana.
- 44:36And Josh Hoover, there's potentially a whole lot of
- 44:38upside there. He's very athletic.
- 44:40He's actually a little bit more athletic than what Fernando
- 44:42Mendoza was, but the match up overall and and Joel, you can
- 44:47give me your thoughts as to far as as far as how you how you
- 44:50think this is ultimately going to go.
- 44:53But as of right now on. Well, is Belichick's girlfriend
- 44:56going to be on the on the field? Because if she's going to be on
- 44:59the field, then that could possibly be a distraction.
- 45:03And I think I think that's one of the reasons why Belichick
- 45:07didn't wasn't very good last year as a coach.
- 45:10I mean, you got to remember, Belichick is the first coach to
- 45:14get traded by the Cleveland Browns, OK?
- 45:17So he, he isn't like, he isn't the greatest court, you know, he
- 45:22isn't the greatest coach in the world.
- 45:25It was a great combination of him and Brady and Bledsoe,
- 45:30'cause remember, Brady took Bledsoe's position.
- 45:34OK, Patriots didn't really suffer a a quarterback loss like
- 45:39like like they have recently. But I think Belichick is a
- 45:45really good coach. But I do think that it doesn't
- 45:48take much to be a distraction. We saw that during all the
- 45:55different scandals in New England, especially the the
- 46:00deflate gate. Deflategate, yeah.
- 46:02And the Spygate, yeah. And it's it's funny too, because
- 46:07North Carolina has had distractions, you know, this
- 46:10offseason because their general manager had to step down.
- 46:14And, you know, it's it's believed that he was one of the
- 46:16biggest parts in hiring Bill Belichick.
- 46:19And now it just seems like all of North Carolina's coaching
- 46:22staff is this, you know, nepotism filled coaching tree of
- 46:26basically every one of Bill Belichick's previous, you know,
- 46:29Co workers or people that he liked has followed him there to
- 46:32North Carolina. And it's just kind of like he's
- 46:35trying to, you know, ride out, ride out his glory days still
- 46:38being a coach, But it's been an absolute disaster.
- 46:41I mean, he it's obviously he can't recruit well.
- 46:44He can't utilize the transfer portal.
- 46:46Well. I mean, there was all that hype
- 46:47last year. And he got absolutely.
- 46:49Blown out. I'm telling you, it's a it's a
- 46:52distraction. Now, Hey, look, I've been
- 46:55married for 15 years. I I enjoy, I love it.
- 46:58Nothing, nothing's hurt me. But it seems like whenever
- 47:03football players or coaches, whenever they get into a
- 47:06relationship or they get married or anything like that, their
- 47:11production drops. And there's a reason for that.
- 47:15Their production drops because in high school, Tony, remember
- 47:20in high school we it like if we were series about sports in our
- 47:24senior or junior year, we dropped down from three sports
- 47:29to 1 sport because it was trying to get that, that college ticket
- 47:34right. Nothing's changed, nothing's
- 47:38changed. You know, so usually like for
- 47:41example, bone necks. Oh, I, I, I do.
- 47:44I like MO necks. OK, He had a Goodyear last year,
- 47:48right? That was his rookie year.
- 47:51OK, Now that his surgery and all that stuff is done, you know, I
- 47:59am I'm kind of scared because usually what happens is these
- 48:03these players, they do really good the first year or they do,
- 48:08you know, somewhat OK the first year, then they do better the
- 48:11second year. And then after that, after,
- 48:14after they get the aroma, you know, the the atmosphere, the
- 48:18the smell, everything. They change.
- 48:22They always change. So it's going to be interesting
- 48:26to see how Bo Nicks, you know, reflects the season like I
- 48:32didn't, you know, there's a huge uproar here in Denver because,
- 48:37you know, our first game we were like up like 27 to blah, blah.
- 48:41And it's like you guys settle down.
- 48:46It's pre season. Yeah, you know.
- 48:49Like half those dudes aren't even going to be on the roster
- 48:52by the time they first week kills around.
- 48:54People need to understand that, you know when when when we play
- 48:59pre season, usually the first half is always like the first
- 49:05starters and then the second-half is the backups and
- 49:09then the thirds is the thirds and then third and fourth
- 49:13quarter is usually scrubs. Those are the ones that are on
- 49:16the bubble trying to find fight to get a roster spot.
- 49:21So pre season yeah, great. I love it.
- 49:24Football awesome. You know, it's football is
- 49:27definitely better than watching Chicago Fire or Chicago PD and
- 49:31they don't OK, but we have to also understand that it's it's
- 49:37pre season and we're not seeing everything.
- 49:41We're not seeing everything, we're not seeing the news.
- 49:44You know, and you know, I hate to tell you this, but look, as a
- 49:49Denver Bronco fan, I can tell you that however they were last
- 49:55year, don't expect them to be like much, much better the
- 50:01following year. It is what it is.
- 50:04And I don't I don't see I don't see Denver Broncos make very
- 50:09many like huge, huge trades or drafts this year.
- 50:16I, I, I I didn't see anything that I really like won't spoke
- 50:20out. So I I do believe that the
- 50:26Broncos will make it past the post season if oh Nicks doesn't
- 50:33get hurt. But I am very worried about his
- 50:39ankle. Hell, he hasn't even got on the
- 50:40field and he has three ankle surgeries.
- 50:43I don't care if they were little, I don't care if they
- 50:46were just clean up. It's still an issue.
- 50:51Yeah, and it's still something that your body has to recover
- 50:53from, especially in a in a high, high active sport and a high,
- 50:57you know, trying to think of the right word.
- 51:01And I just can't think of it off the top of that.
- 51:04A a championship level and just a high impact, impact, high
- 51:08impact sport such as football. But I am excited to see because
- 51:11he he is going into his third season now.
- 51:13He had a great, you know, sophomore season technically
- 51:16last year under Sean Payton. I do kind of want to, I do
- 51:19wonder what that relationship looks like because there's a
- 51:22little bit of the back and forth of Sean's like, oh, his ankle's
- 51:25not ready. And Bo Knicks is like, now it's
- 51:27fine. And the kind of the argument
- 51:29back and forth. Some Sean Payton's a prick.
- 51:32I mean, he's Oh yeah, he's, he's thrown this kid under the bus I
- 51:37don't know how many times. So trust, trust me, they might
- 51:40be on the same page, but you know, they're, they're, they're
- 51:43not, they're not the same idealistic.
- 51:47Yeah. There's, there's parts where I
- 51:51think that Sean Payton wishes that he never drafted him
- 51:57because of this whole ankle issue.
- 52:00You know, and he kind of said that out in public during a
- 52:05during a media conference. And sometimes, sometimes it's
- 52:12best to keep mouth shut. You know, like I say, sometimes
- 52:15in the world, everybody's like a Denver Bronco.
- 52:19We tell people what they want to hear.
- 52:21We don't exactly tell them the truth.
- 52:24And it, and it is kind of sad too, because Bodix, he was
- 52:27really good, especially when even when he was at Auburn for
- 52:29as bad as Auburn was like he made Auburn relevant and then he
- 52:32did wonders in Oregon. So I mean, I thought it was a
- 52:35great pick up. And he's older.
- 52:37He picked up the system really well.
- 52:38Obviously, you know, they got Jalen Waddle from the from the
- 52:41Dolphins. So that gives him the true #1
- 52:43receiver for him to be able to work with.
- 52:45And, and you're right, they did, they did manage to bring most
- 52:48everybody back on both sides of the ball.
- 52:50Now, like you said, that doesn't immediately mean that they're
- 52:53going to replicate the same, same success that they had.
- 52:55It's it's one of those football and really sports in general,
- 52:58any given day that you're playing an opponent can happen,
- 53:01especially like in a professional sport where you've
- 53:04got 32 teams and these are supposed to be the best of the
- 53:06best guys playing football currently in the world.
- 53:10And yeah, any given day somebody could come in, even if they're,
- 53:13you know, O and 10, they can come in, hit you in the mouth,
- 53:16and next thing you know, you're losing to the you're losing to
- 53:18the team that's already lost 10 games.
- 53:20Yeah, and NFL players are are, you know, they're they're,
- 53:23they're not. What's the word on what life be
- 53:30life and for NFL players too. And, and, and watch that, you
- 53:34know, I forget who it was, but there was that one time he
- 53:39wasn't playing very good. Well, hell, he wasn't playing
- 53:42very good. Oh.
- 53:43Demetrius Thomas. Remember Demetrius Thomas?
- 53:48Yeah. Well, he wasn't playing very
- 53:50good because his mom was in jail and they were getting ready to
- 53:53pardon her And and, you know, and he wanted her to come and
- 53:58watch, you know, and we got to remember that that even though
- 54:01these football players are, you know, ultimate athletes, life be
- 54:07life and two. So make sure that you kind of
- 54:10watch the the drama box also when it comes to, you know,
- 54:15Sunday, especially when you're picking your fantasy draft team.
- 54:20And I have to remind you that I think HGII think till the final
- 54:25time out, I think they're going to do NFL draft thing this year.
- 54:31So you'll you'll want to grab on to that.
- 54:36But yeah, and, and I know it's probably a little bit dated for
- 54:39maybe some of the, some of the potential younger viewers, but
- 54:41when the, I believe it was a Monday Night Football game,
- 54:43Brett Favre lost his dad. He I think he lit up the
- 54:47Raiders. There's like 6 touchdowns that
- 54:50night. So I mean, that's the Raiders.
- 54:52That's true. It is the Raiders, but still.
- 54:55The Raiders, the Raiders are almost as bad as the Denver
- 55:00Broncos to where we, we could be better than the other team and
- 55:06like we play to their level. I mean, the Raiders and the
- 55:10Broncos, they're the same. They're the same team.
- 55:13They both play to their opponent's level.
- 55:17Yeah, they play down to their opponents unfortunately.
- 55:20But real quick though, as far if you had to make a pick.
- 55:23So as of right now, North Carolina versus TCU, according
- 55:27to ESPN odds, they have TCU at -7 1/2.
- 55:32So they're a little over a touchdown favorite to beat North
- 55:35Carolina. According to the predictor they
- 55:39have TCU winning by 51 1/2 percent is their is their
- 55:45prediction over North Carolina. Well, you know, I got to go back
- 55:50to, you know, if, if Belichick still has that girlfriend of his
- 55:55and she's going to be at the game, I wouldn't expect anything
- 55:59different. I think it's going to be the
- 56:00same as last year, especially if, you know, I, I, I don't pay
- 56:06attention to, you know, upperclassmen who, you know, you
- 56:10know how they did last year compared to that, you know how
- 56:12they do this year. But you know, if it's, it's one
- 56:15of those things that if, if a duck cracks, chances are it's
- 56:19still a duck. So I, I, I wouldn't, I wouldn't
- 56:23expect anything great or big. I mean, we saw that with the,
- 56:29with the Colorado Buffaloes when Deion Sanders was here and his
- 56:34kids were a part of the team, they were really good.
- 56:37And then that next year, you know, so you got to keep that in
- 56:42mind. Yeah, and then the next big
- 56:46game, I mean, there's some other games, but this is the next big
- 56:48one that kind of matters. We have North Carolina State
- 56:51going to Virginia, so luckily it's still here in the States.
- 56:55So it's not too far. It's just up in Charlottesville.
- 56:58As of now, ESPN has University of Virginia.
- 57:02They are -5 1/2 point favourites and ESPN has them as a 68%
- 57:09chance of winning over NC State. If you had to pick, who would
- 57:14you pick to probably win that game?
- 57:16So before I pick, I have one question, Tony, because I don't
- 57:19really follow a whole lot of college football.
- 57:22When we talking about Virginia, Virginia State, are we talking
- 57:27about the Virginia State that has the big like the ACDC song
- 57:33coming on and the crowd really gets into it?
- 57:36Nope, that's Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech OK, All right,
- 57:39Because I was going to say, and if they're going against her
- 57:42chin tag, they're screwed because that's that's a lot
- 57:45that's a lot of hoopla to fight. You know Virginia is a home at.
- 57:58Home, they were just in the ACC Championship game last year.
- 58:02I think they are coming off of a, they're coming off of a
- 58:06pretty decent season now. I know we talked about it, you
- 58:08know, previous season doesn't necessarily matter, but they did
- 58:13do really well last. Year, so they still have
- 58:15momentum, since they still have momentum and it's a home game.
- 58:20I I probably I would probably take them by at least a field
- 58:24goal. Yeah, they finished, they
- 58:25finished eleven and three last year, including their bowl win.
- 58:29So I mean, they they did really well last year, especially
- 58:32considering they were, they were kind of one of those teams that
- 58:35nobody really expected them to, I guess do much.
- 58:39And they just kind of quietly kept on chugging and lo and
- 58:42behold, they're there now. NC State also didn't do bad last
- 58:46year, including their ball when they finished eight and five.
- 58:50So they were kind of middle of the pack.
- 58:51They did get a win against Virginia last year.
- 58:54They were one of the few teams that beat them.
- 58:55They beat them 35 to 31. Now, obviously last year, last
- 59:00year's game doesn't matter because North in North Carolina
- 59:04State was hosting them and obviously everybody had
- 59:06different players, but they did get did a win against them last
- 59:09year, so so. That I would agree with you.
- 59:14I I think Virginia would take it just because they have the
- 59:17momentum from last year. Yeah, I think so.
- 59:20And and I believe if I remember, they did actually get a really
- 59:23good quarterback in the draft or not the draft, the transfer
- 59:26portal and Beau Purbula, he played for Mizzou last year,
- 59:31actually had a really good season up until getting hurt.
- 59:33So they have an experienced guy who's been around the league for
- 59:36a little bit in a few different systems.
- 59:39I think they kind of have the edge as far as the quarterback
- 59:41battle goes. And NC State lost a few big guys
- 59:44to the transfer portal, primarily to Texas.
- 59:47So they might be they might be hurting a little bit as far as
- 59:50that goes. But nonetheless though, brother,
- 59:53that is that is it. That's all I got for for today.
- 59:56I appreciate you, appreciate you joining me and and talking some
- 59:59ball with me. Man is one of those.
- 1:00:01We've been talking about this forever.
- 1:00:03I know. No, no, no problem.
- 1:00:05No problem at all. You know, and I, I'm, I'm not
- 1:00:08going to, I'm not going to do a cheap shot on the Indianapolis
- 1:00:11Colts, even though like, I, I, I think I'm the only user in the
- 1:00:17world that I support the Pacers. I just don't support the
- 1:00:24Indianapolis Colts. I do not like the owner.
- 1:00:28Terrible character, even every pad.
- 1:00:32I I yeah, I don't like them. But my question to you is what
- 1:00:36are your thoughts on the Colts? You, you think this is going to
- 1:00:39be a good season? Because if I'm not mistaken, you
- 1:00:42guys schedule this year. It it, it's, it's a little bit
- 1:00:46weaker compared to last week. It's a little weaker.
- 1:00:50It's one of those I, I look at it and it, it's kind of the same
- 1:00:54issue is, is what is the quarterback situation look like?
- 1:00:57Daniel Jones is also coming off of a major injury.
- 1:01:01Obviously you can tell once they stopped, once you basically
- 1:01:04stopped the Colts from being able to run the ball with
- 1:01:06Jonathan Taylor and Daniel Jones had to be a quarterback for you
- 1:01:09no more than 5 seconds. We we got to see the old Danny
- 1:01:12Dimes from the New York Giants days and why he was eventually
- 1:01:16released from the Giants as a result of it.
- 1:01:20And then, of course, the backup situation, you know, is Anthony
- 1:01:23Richardson. You know, he's been devoted to
- 1:01:25quarterback three behind Riley Leonard.
- 1:01:27But there's been a lot of people upset that Riley Leonard has
- 1:01:30looked terrible in the preseason.
- 1:01:32But as you pointed out, it's preseason.
- 1:01:34How much of that truly matters? So that's A and I'll be honest
- 1:01:39too, I think I speak for most Colts fans when I say the day
- 1:01:45that the GM, Chris Ballard gets fired, there will be probably a
- 1:01:50parade in Indianapolis because. He's.
- 1:01:54He's been the GM for like the last 10 years, he hasn't made it
- 1:01:58to the playoffs, He hasn't won a playoff game.
- 1:02:01Like it has been an absolute disaster with it and and how
- 1:02:05he's managed to still make it through I think like 3 coaching
- 1:02:08changes and he's still not fired.
- 1:02:10It's like a. Cockroach.
- 1:02:11He is dude. It's funny you say that.
- 1:02:14So. Earlier when I again, because I
- 1:02:17I listen to like Brady Quinn and Levar Arrington as I'm driving
- 1:02:20into work and Lavar brought it up about he said, man, there's
- 1:02:25always that one coach on the team.
- 1:02:27It's like he manages to make it through like 3 or 4 coaching
- 1:02:29Staffs. Like, dude, how do you do?
- 1:02:31You are the Roach like you are the Roach of the coaching staff.
- 1:02:34It through all the nuclear fallout, you still just come
- 1:02:38scurrying out like, hey, guys, still here.
- 1:02:40That's Chris Ballard. Like I don't know how you
- 1:02:42managed to keep getting out of this unscathed.
- 1:02:46But he's wondering. We're not making fun of anybody.
- 1:02:49We're just stating when when somebody says that a person's a
- 1:02:52cockroach, that means that they've been in that position in
- 1:02:57that area for so long. And it just even even with like
- 1:03:02unbelievable coaching changes, owner changes that the
- 1:03:07Indianapolis Colts have done in the last five years, like he's
- 1:03:11still there, you know, still there.
- 1:03:13He's still there. They were, they were having
- 1:03:15trouble with him and with Chuck Strong, you know, So I mean it,
- 1:03:22it's just crazy how he's still there.
- 1:03:26You guys, you guys lost Andrew Luck and he's still there.
- 1:03:30Absolutely. It is, it's it's absolutely does
- 1:03:34it. It's one of those I'm kind of
- 1:03:35upset that I have to use the term cockroach on him because
- 1:03:37part of me wants to use the term like foreskin where he
- 1:03:39disappears when things get hard. But you know, I don't, I don't
- 1:03:42know if that necessarily counts in his case or not, but it's one
- 1:03:45of those like, man, I hope it does.
- 1:03:46So I can just I can just use it at least once?
- 1:03:48At least once? And, and you know, and remember
- 1:03:52that, you know, the 9 times out of 10, the manager doesn't
- 1:03:58really know how to play football.
- 1:03:59The managers just knows how to like, you know, pick and stuff
- 1:04:03like that. That That's why you have to give
- 1:04:07it a little bit of a grain of the salt because one thing that
- 1:04:12I don't think he does with with a football team, you want to
- 1:04:16build outside to inside. You want to build around the
- 1:04:22court and the Indianapolis Colts, you know, you think that
- 1:04:26they would have learned with Manning because they didn't.
- 1:04:29You know, even though Manning was great for the Indianapolis
- 1:04:35Colts and he was amazing for the Denver Broncos, I do think that
- 1:04:40the culture of how they create the team, how they recruit the
- 1:04:45team, how they place the team. I do think, you know, especially
- 1:04:51like Andrew Luck, you know, being him and Manny, they're
- 1:04:55kind of like coaches, you know, on the chess board.
- 1:04:59That's great. But just remember when they're
- 1:05:03gone that that that holes there. Yep, and I think I think
- 1:05:09Cincinnati is going to be the next team that has to deal with
- 1:05:12that because Joe Joe Burrow has been that guy for them as far as
- 1:05:15hey, like he he begged them to go get Jamar Chase, his former
- 1:05:19teammate for my LSU Tigers in his national championship.
- 1:05:22When he's like, hey, go get my guy.
- 1:05:24He is the best wide receiver. You won't regret it.
- 1:05:27And sure enough, it it comes to be true.
- 1:05:29But every time he's like, hey, I, I need you to get this.
- 1:05:32No, we, we, we don't want to, we don't want to do that.
- 1:05:35It's and you know, he pointed out it's like basically it's
- 1:05:37this year bust. And I, I think Cincinnati, and
- 1:05:40it's funny because Cincinnati is run very similar as far as you
- 1:05:43know, we, we don't really want to do that.
- 1:05:45It's like, OK, well, you're going to waste another
- 1:05:48generational talent that could take you to greatness and make
- 1:05:51you great, and you're going to absolutely flunder it because
- 1:05:55you're either pride, you believe that you're smarter than he is,
- 1:05:58or you just don't want to listen, or you just don't want
- 1:06:00to fork up the extra money or yeah, or he's uncoachable.
- 1:06:03So it it is weird to see, you know, you would think a guy that
- 1:06:08you're like, you know what, we're going to trust you enough
- 1:06:09to pay you a crap ton of money. You would think if you have an
- 1:06:13investment like that, you might want to listen to your
- 1:06:16investment of like, we paid him a ton of money.
- 1:06:18Maybe we should hear what this guy wants.
- 1:06:20If he's our star, if he's our star worker, maybe we should
- 1:06:24listen to who our star worker wants to work with instead of
- 1:06:27no, we think this will work for you.
- 1:06:28No, no, no, no, but I think that's why and I I even use this
- 1:06:33on AI probably use this one. I shouldn't have on a more
- 1:06:39higher status Co worker at my job.
- 1:06:41Now she she kind of did one of those where she came in and
- 1:06:45she's making all these suggestions.
- 1:06:46I'm like, you haven't even been here to see this.
- 1:06:48And it's funny because she was also a retired Colonel.
- 1:06:51I said, you know, one of my favorite people I used to ever
- 1:06:54work with was the Secretary of Defense, James Madison.
- 1:06:59You know, he retired as a four-star.
- 1:07:00I said, but do you know what his nickname was when he was when he
- 1:07:02was in? She goes, I don't know what I
- 1:07:04said. It was chaos.
- 1:07:05You know why it was chaos? Because no, I said it was an
- 1:07:08acronym for Colonel always has another outstanding solution
- 1:07:11and. That reminds me of Iraq every
- 1:07:17time I squabble. Your farting.
- 1:07:18He's like, keep on talking Sir, we'll find you.
- 1:07:20Yep, and and it was so funny after after I told her about the
- 1:07:25call side chaos and what it stood for.
- 1:07:27I, I got talked to you about that not too long, not too long
- 1:07:31after. I'm like, hey, that's that's the
- 1:07:33most intelligent, professional way.
- 1:07:36I could basically say you're an idiot in the most respectful way
- 1:07:40at the same time. But but Joel, brother, it has
- 1:07:45been a blast. As always, appreciate talking to
- 1:07:47you. Appreciate you joining me.
- 1:07:49Definitely check out Joel. He he like I said, he is the man
- 1:07:52behind the scenes as far as making military broadcast radio
- 1:07:55go. He, he took this, you know, he
- 1:07:58helped take this dream on and has since amplified it.
- 1:08:01MBR is such a cool thing. When I, when I first applied and
- 1:08:04talked to Joel and he got to hear me, he's like, man, you
- 1:08:06just got something about, you know, you, you already had a lot
- 1:08:09of the core basics and fundamentals and he's just
- 1:08:12continued to make me better. He's continued to make all the
- 1:08:14veterans here at MBR better as far as being able to tell their
- 1:08:17stories, being able to host podcasts and whatnot.
- 1:08:20So if you want to learn more about that, definitely check out
- 1:08:23MB radio dot US. You can find other great veteran
- 1:08:26hosts. You can find Joel because he
- 1:08:27hops in and out of everywhere and obviously he helps veterans
- 1:08:32pretty much with everything that we do, our backgrounds, intros,
- 1:08:35overlays, all of that stuff. He's he's helped have a hand in
- 1:08:38that. So definitely check them out.
- 1:08:40And then of course, also check out Gunfighter Beard Co because
- 1:08:42if you want a great beard, if you want great beard care
- 1:08:44products smell good and it's all natural.
- 1:08:47Plus kind of the cool thing about beard care stuff too, like
- 1:08:49if you're, if you're ever sunburned and you're like, man,
- 1:08:52I am just peeling constantly and you keep trying to get aloe and
- 1:08:55it gets sticky and it's built up.
- 1:08:56Use a little bit of beard oil. It changes the entire world
- 1:08:59because it keeps that keeps that dry skin moisturized, keeps the
- 1:09:02better. Same with the beard butter.
- 1:09:04You can melt that down, you know, just with the hands on
- 1:09:06your heat, heat from your hands. Roll that on there to use a
- 1:09:09little bit of moisturizer. And again, you smell good.
- 1:09:12So definitely check him out. He's a marine in South Carolina.
- 1:09:15Great dude. But appreciate everybody tuning
- 1:09:18in. And we will see you next week as
- 1:09:20college football's back and then shortly after the NFL is going
- 1:09:23to be back too. So we will see y'all later.
- 1:09:25Thank you, Tony. Thank you, Sir.
