- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer, turn the
- 0:36Speaker 1: machine on. Phil. Okay, I'd like to start right here. Uh,
- 0:42Speaker 1: because this is interesting to me. No, I'm sure no
- 0:45Speaker 1: one else is interesting this. But Chester just was packing
- 0:48Speaker 1: a little dip. Not really, it was a tobacco substitute. No, oh,
- 0:53Speaker 1: that's actual tobacco. Yeah, it's boiled. It's a Swedish So
- 0:58Speaker 1: you're like back on the Anyways, you pulled one out
- 1:01Speaker 1: and put it into a little storage unit on the lid,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and Spencer was asking if you ever get those back
- 1:07Speaker 1: out and do it reach you? Well, if you're ever
- 1:10Speaker 1: in a real pinch, you might grab one. That's a
- 1:13Speaker 1: good punt. Yeah, so have you. But have you personally
- 1:17Speaker 1: pulled them back out and recycled? Probably you don't know
- 1:22Speaker 1: who should I ask? I'm sure I have. I just
- 1:27Speaker 1: feel like you'd know if you did that or not.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Do you think it's probable that you've done that yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and a pinch Yeah, I definitely have Okay, okay, do
- 1:37Speaker 1: you do you swallow your snuff? Spit? No, never gives
- 1:43Speaker 1: you heartburn? Me heartburn. Um, I just came from the gym.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You know. It was starting to like perplex me, as uh,
- 1:50Speaker 1: the how do they decide what countries to name exercises
- 1:54Speaker 1: off of? Because it's always like oh yeah, but no,
- 1:58Speaker 1: because there's there's like this is this, like there's this
- 2:01Speaker 1: collection of these like women have like this little chore list.
- 2:04Speaker 1: They come in, they exercise together, and I don't know
- 2:06Speaker 1: who does it, but someone comes in and on a
- 2:08Speaker 1: white board writes out like a little chore list for
- 2:10Speaker 1: him and on there is Bulgarian something like oh yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 1: it's always like Turkey, Turkey, Bulgaria, Yeah, Romanian, like you
- 2:22Speaker 1: could do like a Belarusian push up, I'm sure, but
- 2:25Speaker 1: they never Why is it like why those countries does
- 2:30Speaker 1: the US have anything? But if someone like a French
- 2:33Speaker 1: get up, ye, I'd better go home and get my wife.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I mean, like why it's we have this idea of
- 2:40Speaker 1: like Eastern like this part of like Eastern Europe be
- 2:43Speaker 1: like very good at exercise. Yeah, a lot of testosterone
- 2:45Speaker 1: ever there. Yeah, yeah, a Bulgarian squat or whatever. It's like, oh,
- 2:52Speaker 1: that's how they do in Bulgaria. This is the this
- 2:56Speaker 1: is a special episode because this is this episode commemorates
- 2:59Speaker 1: our season ten launch, Part A, Season ten as A,
- 3:05Speaker 1: Part A and Part B. Five episodes are out now
- 3:10Speaker 1: and then five episodes coming right up. But the five
- 3:13Speaker 1: episodes are out now. And what we like to do
- 3:14Speaker 1: is a little tradition traditions. You should play that Phil
- 3:19Speaker 1: from around the roof if we played about thirteen times
- 3:26Speaker 1: during the Christmas episode two years ago. It's a tradition
- 3:31Speaker 1: to do episode trivia because well after we launched new episodes,
- 3:35Speaker 1: we always get we always get flooded with um a
- 3:38Speaker 1: lot of questions. So rather than just taking them in
- 3:42Speaker 1: as they come, we've actually invited questions. But it was
- 3:45Speaker 1: on that day of like national unity, when when social
- 3:49Speaker 1: media went away for a day. That's what people are
- 3:53Speaker 1: supposed to put the questions in, right, It was actually
- 3:55Speaker 1: a couple of days before, on the day when America
- 3:57Speaker 1: got a break from social media. H it was a
- 4:00Speaker 1: couple of days. It's kind of why did you say
- 4:02Speaker 1: something about how that was an issue. I'm only going
- 4:04Speaker 1: by what you told me. Yeah, well, because I started
- 4:07Speaker 1: reading them, but there were ninety six questions, so I
- 4:10Speaker 1: was going to continue on the day that things shut out. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 1: do we get any questions at least? My goodness, you
- 4:20Speaker 1: get that dip in your ear. I'm teasing your Chester
- 4:29Speaker 1: hard to track everything's going on. Uh, I was thinking
- 4:36Speaker 1: of don't. So we're gonna answer a bunch of free
- 4:45Speaker 1: like some facts f a q s, f a q
- 4:48Speaker 1: s about season ten joined by Chester or you've sort
- 4:52Speaker 1: of been introduced. Crin's here Phil. I like the T shirt? Phil? Yeah? Thanks?
- 4:57Speaker 1: Did you buy that? No, not at all. It is
- 5:01Speaker 1: immediate Field by Nature. Sure, he's got Immediate Field by
- 5:04Speaker 1: Nature shirt. I love that. The designs you've got coming
- 5:06Speaker 1: out on these T shirts over the last few months
- 5:08Speaker 1: have been killer. They've been great. You know what. I
- 5:10Speaker 1: don't know who's doing that work, but that hurts because
- 5:12Speaker 1: I've had nothing to do with those. You know, you
- 5:15Speaker 1: can you can give a little sometimes. I've handed over
- 5:17Speaker 1: the reins on that because I realized that I have
- 5:19Speaker 1: very personal tastes that don't necessarily reflect America in general.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Rick Hutton from f HF YEP, I'm here again. Thanks,
- 5:31Speaker 1: to having me step an old man checkered shirt. We
- 5:35Speaker 1: used to be an old man. Like it's a new
- 5:38Speaker 1: new man old man because it's because it's a fleece.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It's weird. The patagon he's doing that. It's like a
- 5:46Speaker 1: Bosman uniform. Yeah, which is a shame. Yeah, it's a
- 5:52Speaker 1: dress up like you used to hunt a long time ago. Yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 1: it's like doing funny one like non hunting. When non
- 5:58Speaker 1: hunting companies to decided to do a nod towards that,
- 6:01Speaker 1: they always go way back. They're like they go to
- 6:04Speaker 1: an old looking camo. You go to like an old
- 6:08Speaker 1: checkered thing. You know what I was in the story
- 6:11Speaker 1: the other day in this chat, my ass um, I
- 6:16Speaker 1: there's a there's this flannel. It's like old school flannel
- 6:18Speaker 1: that I got like hand me down from several people.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think I got it from my dad eventually, but
- 6:24Speaker 1: he got it from someone else. Um, and Rick has
- 6:27Speaker 1: it now because I shrunk it in the washer. But um,
- 6:31Speaker 1: I love that that same flannel. You shrunk it down
- 6:34Speaker 1: to Rick size now. But I saw that same it's
- 6:40Speaker 1: literally the same flannel made. I don't want to say
- 6:42Speaker 1: the company, but I saw it in a story the
- 6:45Speaker 1: other day for for a hundred dollars made you feel
- 6:49Speaker 1: like you shouldn't have given it to Rick. No, I
- 6:51Speaker 1: just I feel like I gotta. I just feel like
- 6:53Speaker 1: at what point, like why is why is that something
- 6:57Speaker 1: like that worth a hundred dollars? Definitely worth Yeah, And
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's like I just really I really struggle with anything retro. Man,
- 7:08Speaker 1: It's it's really cool. I like it. I would, I mean, yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 1: it's just I could see the jealousy and when I
- 7:16Speaker 1: wear it once in a while because he's like, damn, yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I used to wear it all the time and then
- 7:20Speaker 1: it's shrunk and yeah, they're like harkening back to a
- 7:22Speaker 1: simpler time. Yeah, let's get back to those prices too.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You want to hark and factor a simple time. Oh Clay,
- 7:31Speaker 1: what's up? Hey? Safe? Yeah man, I'm here. Clay's joining
- 7:36Speaker 1: remotely getting all kinds of bears, all kinds of deers
- 7:39Speaker 1: and stuff all the time. Uh, we'll get back to you. Oh, Spencer,
- 7:44Speaker 1: how you doing? Spencer? Good? You didn't call him me
- 7:45Speaker 1: in Clay's shirts? Okay, Well do you know what that is?
- 7:52Speaker 1: It's weird hunt shirt. It's very nice shirt you can
- 7:54Speaker 1: buy in our store is that right? And then you
- 7:56Speaker 1: can buy a meatball shirt and that's that's your that's
- 8:01Speaker 1: that's our company's kickball team. That's right, Chester plays, Phil plays?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Would she uses the best? Well? I was just gonna
- 8:08Speaker 1: say that shirt so exclusive. I was on the team
- 8:10Speaker 1: and I don't have one, so good luck. I don't
- 8:14Speaker 1: have one either. How'd you want up with the only
- 8:16Speaker 1: guy with a meatballs that we had? Like, uh, like
- 8:19Speaker 1: twenty of them came in, but then the roster you
- 8:21Speaker 1: gotta expanded, Like what kind of fur hats that meatball
- 8:24Speaker 1: wearing raccoon? Hm? Who made that? Who designed that shirt?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Same dude making all of our meat Eater shirts? I think,
- 8:33Speaker 1: do you think maybe you should sell those? You know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: we had folks asking and YouTube comments where they could
- 8:38Speaker 1: get one of these, oh speaking to t shirts Right
- 8:41Speaker 1: now at our store at the meatator dot com you
- 8:44Speaker 1: can go get our This is a commemorative shirt. This
- 8:47Speaker 1: is a truly commemorative shirt. Decade long run of the
- 8:50Speaker 1: meat Eater Show meteor TV show. So we have a customer,
- 8:53Speaker 1: are very own Hunter Spencer, one of those guys that
- 8:58Speaker 1: no tell him I always mixed that up. No, your Spencer,
- 9:03Speaker 1: he's Hunter Spencer and your Spencer Comma Hunter. Yeah, we
- 9:10Speaker 1: gotta get him on the show sometime. We should. Man,
- 9:14Speaker 1: he's the best in the biz. Oh he's great. What
- 9:17Speaker 1: tell you call my artist world's greatest artist? Except for
- 9:20Speaker 1: like sits alongside sets, sits alongside sets fiance. I don't
- 9:28Speaker 1: like to use sits alongside sets fiance as the world's
- 9:31Speaker 1: greatest artist. Not only is he like wildly talented, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: he gets it. Oh, like he gets the Brandy gets it. Well.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He's at a point where not only did he get it,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but he makes it leads it because I'm like, yeah,
- 9:46Speaker 1: that's what it looks like. Uh, he made us a
- 9:50Speaker 1: season ten logo custom season ten logo. We'll never make
- 9:54Speaker 1: it again. We might make in the eleven, but I
- 9:56Speaker 1: doubt it. Maybe. Also, you can get our new Fox
- 10:01Speaker 1: in a box T shirt. Now. This was inspired by
- 10:05Speaker 1: episode to A eight Visser and Bones. There's been a
- 10:08Speaker 1: lot of build up to. It has to do with
- 10:11Speaker 1: a long time feud we've been having with the German
- 10:15Speaker 1: hunting dog community. Yeah, the very lawyered up German hunting
- 10:22Speaker 1: dog community, where I have it on good authority that
- 10:26Speaker 1: they that certain members of the German hunting dog community
- 10:30Speaker 1: are into these arcane seeming practices of making their dogs
- 10:35Speaker 1: duke it out with various critters to show who's tough.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And and we've got a lot of pushback and blowback
- 10:42Speaker 1: from people being like no, but we stuck to our guns,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and and and covered. In one episode we covered um
- 10:51Speaker 1: hunting dog test which is called fox in a Box
- 10:54Speaker 1: where your dog dukes it out with a fox in
- 10:56Speaker 1: a box so you can get an official fox in
- 11:00Speaker 1: a Box T shirt. I sent one to Ronnie. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: don't think he knows about it. Ronnie, Babe, God bless him,
- 11:09Speaker 1: sits at the center of this controversy in a way
- 11:12Speaker 1: that I don't want to get into. Another controversy is
- 11:15Speaker 1: not a controversy. A little annoyed me last night. When
- 11:17Speaker 1: you're listening, this is just a clarify something. When you're
- 11:19Speaker 1: listening to the show, you'll hear ads that we read okay,
- 11:24Speaker 1: like like I'll read an ad when we do those,
- 11:27Speaker 1: we always we were able to approve our ads, but
- 11:29Speaker 1: there's other ads to get inserted into the show, um
- 11:33Speaker 1: that are read by other people, and that through things
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'll would take like five hours to explain. We don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: have a lot of you we we approved categories of ads,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but don't have a lot of influence within those categories
- 11:48Speaker 1: unless it's like in a very reactive sense. I was listening,
- 11:51Speaker 1: like I discovered this on Uh, What's What's What's last?
- 11:55Speaker 1: What's the episode just came out? Oh with Jordan Bud Yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 1: what was called there's something about the rattlesnake bite. Hold on,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I think snake Bite episode. I'm listening in the middle.
- 12:08Speaker 1: There's a thing. There's an ad that's not objectionable. There's
- 12:13Speaker 1: an ad about the importance of practicing good firearms safety
- 12:17Speaker 1: in the home in regards to your kids, and if
- 12:21Speaker 1: you have young kids in your house, Um, you need
- 12:25Speaker 1: to keep your guns safe, to keep locked up, keep
- 12:29Speaker 1: a safe household for young kids. But this particular ad
- 12:34Speaker 1: was on there. I had it pulled right away. Was
- 12:36Speaker 1: brought by Brady And that's like a I don't think
- 12:41Speaker 1: they describe themselves this way, but a decidedly anti gun
- 12:43Speaker 1: group that pushes for various gun bands and uh, like
- 12:47Speaker 1: I said, the messaging is right, like keep a gun
- 12:49Speaker 1: safe home, but I'd rather hear it from the nssf UM.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And I do some work for the NSSF on behalf
- 12:56Speaker 1: of their child safe program, but I didn't, I don't
- 12:59Speaker 1: want and you you won't be hearing from those Fellers again.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Though again you've got kids in the house. Man, you
- 13:07Speaker 1: have to keep a type program and how you store
- 13:09Speaker 1: your guns. The Auction House of Oddities is kicking ass. Oh,
- 13:14Speaker 1: I was on there yesterday. I'm pressed tearing it a
- 13:16Speaker 1: new one. It's it's yeah, I don't want to name names,
- 13:19Speaker 1: but a naysayer, a naysayer came to me here. I
- 13:27Speaker 1: think we need a jingle for this. We should have
- 13:29Speaker 1: a jingle for when I'm right about something, the airing
- 13:34Speaker 1: of grievances. It's just a festiest thing from Seinfeld. Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: there should be a jingle like yeah, like uh, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 1: like a like a bell goes on. Whatever the hell
- 13:45Speaker 1: when I wind up being right, I drink your milkshake.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Ain't dreaking up? So one of the angel gets their wings. Yeah,
- 13:58Speaker 1: so it's like, it's like, what the hell's that movie?
- 14:01Speaker 1: I told the whole story. Ye bankrupt the production company
- 14:04Speaker 1: and it was it was a critical and you know
- 14:06Speaker 1: failure box office? Uh hit? What am I saying? The
- 14:10Speaker 1: opposite of a hit? Sucked? At the box office. Uh,
- 14:15Speaker 1: auction Ill was kicking ass. One of the naysayers came
- 14:18Speaker 1: to me yesterday. Well, he didn't like prompt the conversation,
- 14:21Speaker 1: but we were in conversation about something else in which
- 14:24Speaker 1: he acknowledged having been a nay sayer. And I knew
- 14:27Speaker 1: there were internal naysayers but no one would identify them,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but he self identified as a naysayer and and admitted
- 14:36Speaker 1: to being wrong. Very similar when I wounded that big
- 14:39Speaker 1: lazy boy back there in the back. I still haven't
- 14:41Speaker 1: admitted it though, So I want that big lazy way
- 14:45Speaker 1: back in the corner there. Auction Ill is kicking ass. Uh.
- 14:50Speaker 1: It's what like when people are listening to this right here? Now?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Where are we still had? We're still in week We're
- 14:56Speaker 1: still in phase Yeah, week one, they'll be like five
- 14:59Speaker 1: days lifts. Okay, here's the deal, the skunk essence that
- 15:05Speaker 1: we had. You can just enter to win the skunk
- 15:09Speaker 1: essence and if you go on the auction house, the
- 15:10Speaker 1: auction house execution, we're still working some kinks out. You
- 15:13Speaker 1: wouldn't know that that skunk essence was extracted by none
- 15:17Speaker 1: other than me and Chester and Seth were the hyper
- 15:20Speaker 1: Dermott needle I bought at Murdock's. I got in trouble
- 15:24Speaker 1: that day. Yeah, I've seen Chester fight with his wife
- 15:28Speaker 1: at least and west of town on nine about his
- 15:33Speaker 1: proclivity for like messing around out in the woods and waters.
- 15:39Speaker 1: He he stays very rare. He's like, well, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 1: this is why I live here, and this is my lifestyle. No,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I mean, but it's you know, I was supposed to
- 15:54Speaker 1: be home a couple of days ago. Communication. I need
- 16:02Speaker 1: to get better at it sometimes. Oh yeah, thats like
- 16:07Speaker 1: a good stretch of the I ninety corridor. I've said,
- 16:10Speaker 1: listen to Chester explain his way out of what's that
- 16:13Speaker 1: have to do with the skunk essence? Because we're coming
- 16:16Speaker 1: back from getting the skunk essence with a with a
- 16:19Speaker 1: cattle needle. The day's activities took longer than what Chet expected,
- 16:27Speaker 1: especially getting that skunk oil out of it. Yeah, because
- 16:32Speaker 1: you don't want to drive You want to get the
- 16:33Speaker 1: skunks all taking care of where you're at. You don't
- 16:36Speaker 1: want to take it. You don't want to drive him
- 16:37Speaker 1: home and take care of him home. You're already getting
- 16:39Speaker 1: enough trouble bringing them home anyway. So there's like some
- 16:41Speaker 1: passion in the skunk at essence. Yeah, when you if
- 16:44Speaker 1: you take a skunk and you I learned this from
- 16:49Speaker 1: I learned how to extract it from. Uh probably the best,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I feel the best for handling person on YouTube couldn't
- 16:59Speaker 1: Creak out Doors. Yeah, that that's great, Stu, Yeah, Stue Miller.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Stu Miller, Stu Miller Coon Creek Outdoors one like, very
- 17:07Speaker 1: good explanation for himing anyways, he shows how to do it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But you can. Yeah, you just take them and syringe
- 17:13Speaker 1: it out. Uh, filled the jar so you don't need
- 17:17Speaker 1: Like people keep being like, oh, I don't have any money,
- 17:19Speaker 1: How can I participate? You can go sign up to
- 17:21Speaker 1: win the two ounce bottle of skunks stink. Did you
- 17:29Speaker 1: hear about the Friday night controversy in our auction house?
- 17:32Speaker 1: No Friday Night. Uh, there was a bid on Janice's
- 17:37Speaker 1: first pheasant tail feather for thirty dollars. Oh no, that's cool.
- 17:43Speaker 1: The person meant to bid three. Oh but that tail
- 17:47Speaker 1: that that's ridiculus because the tail is very is way
- 17:50Speaker 1: higher than I ever would have thought. But I didn't
- 17:52Speaker 1: know it would go for thirty. Can we can we
- 17:53Speaker 1: get that guy's Uh? Can we get him and roped
- 17:56Speaker 1: into that you're you're missing here? He didn't mean to bid,
- 17:59Speaker 1: but can we just off his card anyway? I have
- 18:02Speaker 1: a feeling it would go to the next hyest bidder,
- 18:05Speaker 1: which would be like five at that point. Currently it's
- 18:08Speaker 1: sitting at eight hundreds. So how did the guy that
- 18:10Speaker 1: accidentally put in thirty grand? How did he get his
- 18:14Speaker 1: situation rectified? I texted ur I t guy and I said,
- 18:18Speaker 1: can this possibly be right? And he said not a chance,
- 18:20Speaker 1: and so he knocked it back down to what he
- 18:22Speaker 1: assumed was a correct bid of three hundred, and then
- 18:25Speaker 1: bidding has proceeded from there. Well, how do you know
- 18:27Speaker 1: that he didn't mean that? No one called him because naturally,
- 18:30Speaker 1: because you have to go up in like ten dollar increments.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It was at two ninety, and then the guy meant
- 18:36Speaker 1: to go to like three hundred, but instead he made
- 18:38Speaker 1: it thirty thousand. Warr fields on him or on us?
- 18:44Speaker 1: I think we may have left some money on the table.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Clay had that dirty dealer Clay, he he would have
- 18:52Speaker 1: locked it in. So, yeah, the auction house is doing
- 18:56Speaker 1: great the first round. I don't know where we're gonna
- 18:59Speaker 1: layd We're gonna land good. We're gonna land good in
- 19:02Speaker 1: the first round. Um, and we got a lot more
- 19:04Speaker 1: rounds coming up. And then the khotice is inspiring more things.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So Doug during we we've been talking about having Doug
- 19:10Speaker 1: during submit a bottle of buck Man juice. I was
- 19:14Speaker 1: thinking he'd submit a whole mason jar of buck Man juice.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But what he is gonna he still is promising to
- 19:25Speaker 1: deliver on that. But what is gonna be on the auction?
- 19:27Speaker 1: How says you get to spend You get to have
- 19:29Speaker 1: a four hour tour of the Durn family farm in
- 19:34Speaker 1: kazan Over, Wisconsin to talk conservation, conservation, land management, how
- 19:40Speaker 1: to facilitate access on your property in a way that
- 19:43Speaker 1: sort of jibes with with farm objectives, how to run
- 19:46Speaker 1: a profitable farm and still prioritize conservation work. You gotta
- 19:52Speaker 1: pay your own travel, But you spend four hours driving
- 19:54Speaker 1: around with Duck. I could spend four years driving around
- 19:57Speaker 1: with Duck. That's actually one of my favorite things do
- 19:59Speaker 1: is drive around with Doug listening to him talk about
- 20:02Speaker 1: his farm. He pays the gas. Dog's gonna pay the gas,
- 20:08Speaker 1: or I'll pay Dog for the gas. And if you want,
- 20:10Speaker 1: you can go home with the jar Buckman juice. You
- 20:13Speaker 1: could even watch going out on a limb. If you
- 20:18Speaker 1: so desired, you can watch Doug Emit. You can watch
- 20:25Speaker 1: Doug Emit Buckman juice. It's like a drug test. A
- 20:29Speaker 1: guy wrote in, Yeah, you'd be like, you'll know. A
- 20:32Speaker 1: guy wrote in it should be called during hearing during
- 20:37Speaker 1: her in and then you don't remember how dirt's cheo
- 20:40Speaker 1: spit is also very attractive to dear. You know this,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I don't think so. Yeah, dirt's cheo spit very attractive. Dear,
- 20:47Speaker 1: wonder what happened if you mix the two? Well, that's
- 20:49Speaker 1: what this guy's thinking. He says, you got to combine
- 20:51Speaker 1: during urine and dirt squirt. How has that been tested?
- 20:56Speaker 1: And into us where he suggests if he could go
- 21:02Speaker 1: bind into a slurry a deer attract and slurry. How
- 21:08Speaker 1: do they know it attracts deer? Dirt dirt squid because
- 21:11Speaker 1: if he spits it out of a tree, deer come
- 21:13Speaker 1: up and smell it more than when other people choose
- 21:17Speaker 1: spit out of a tree. Like if you spat off
- 21:20Speaker 1: the north side of a tree and he spat off
- 21:21Speaker 1: the south side, you're gonna go to the south side.
- 21:24Speaker 1: If Doug puts some buckman juice on the tree, they're
- 21:26Speaker 1: probably gonna start there. It's true, man, I've seen it
- 21:33Speaker 1: on the on the subject of skunk assence um, a
- 21:38Speaker 1: lot of people been writing in about I didn't know
- 21:40Speaker 1: it was such a thing to do skunk oil pranks.
- 21:44Speaker 1: He put skunk assets on a paper plate and slid
- 21:46Speaker 1: the plate under the driver's seat of his buddy's car,
- 21:50Speaker 1: Hot Human, Michigan, September Day. The guy brought it to
- 21:54Speaker 1: have a professionally detailed trying to figure out what was
- 21:56Speaker 1: going on. Couldn't get rid of it. They couldn't sell
- 21:59Speaker 1: the car are and in the end it was scrapped,
- 22:05Speaker 1: ruined the car. Really that bad. You would not believe
- 22:11Speaker 1: because people have told me that like antelope glands smell.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I mean, I know, sunk versus antelope, and I'm like
- 22:16Speaker 1: that it's great. When you get close to it, it's
- 22:21Speaker 1: you like, can't breathe. Yeah, okay. It's almost like it
- 22:24Speaker 1: can be used as like mace because like smelling it
- 22:27Speaker 1: in there, I think it's fine. When you get it
- 22:30Speaker 1: up in there, it's a different experience. It even smells
- 22:33Speaker 1: way it's like a different smell when it's that close.
- 22:37Speaker 1: When you're in it. It doesn't smell like it smells
- 22:40Speaker 1: far off when you're real close to it. This other
- 22:43Speaker 1: guy wrote in about something interesting. You know, I remember
- 22:46Speaker 1: being in high school. Uh, this is kind of date
- 22:49Speaker 1: date my ass for sure, because I graduated high school.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But I remember being in high school and they made
- 22:54Speaker 1: a rule that you couldn't bring guns to school anymore.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And I remember going down to the principle and being like, well,
- 23:03Speaker 1: that's not gonna work. We have our guns at school
- 23:09Speaker 1: and be like, oh yeah, yeah, you know, if you're
- 23:11Speaker 1: like hunting or whatever, that's fine. And so we'd like
- 23:14Speaker 1: park in the high school parking lot with with guns
- 23:18Speaker 1: in socks because you have to have if there's a
- 23:20Speaker 1: case law. But a gun in a sock in the
- 23:23Speaker 1: window and no problem. And this guy is talking about
- 23:27Speaker 1: this is in the Morally stand Wood area, South Big Rapids, Michigan.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And he said that they when his school tried to
- 23:36Speaker 1: get rid of guns um or so I'm messing this up.
- 23:41Speaker 1: They started bringing in a dog to sniff students vehicles
- 23:46Speaker 1: for drugs, but kids that had shotgun shells and spent
- 23:50Speaker 1: brass and stuff in their cars would get a pass
- 23:53Speaker 1: because the dog, whatever dog they had, would smell that
- 23:55Speaker 1: stuff too. So he said all the kids that did
- 23:59Speaker 1: have weed started to also have guns so they could
- 24:02Speaker 1: get a pass on their car. Oh that's true or not?
- 24:07Speaker 1: He says, that's one way to get kids into hunting.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I don't know, do you buy that, Phil, I don't
- 24:14Speaker 1: know why that's such a specific thing. I don't know
- 24:15Speaker 1: why he'd lie about it. It's all. It also just
- 24:17Speaker 1: seems completely backwards to me. Yeah, yeah, I don't see right. Yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 1: when I was in uh, when I was in high school,
- 24:27Speaker 1: a junior in high school, my dad bought me a
- 24:30Speaker 1: forty four Magnum Super Red Hawk stainless steel rugy with
- 24:34Speaker 1: a nine inch barrel pistol with a two power scope
- 24:38Speaker 1: on it. And I like the specificity and and I
- 24:42Speaker 1: carried it to school every day and for Mr Mr
- 24:50Speaker 1: just kept it in the truck, I mean, just you know,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and uh, Mr Moser, I can I can say his name,
- 24:57Speaker 1: because yeah, Mr Moser. He he was the principal at
- 25:01Speaker 1: the school, and he heard about it, and he came
- 25:04Speaker 1: to me and said, hey, Clay, I heard you got
- 25:06Speaker 1: a new gun. And I said, yeah, it's in the truck,
- 25:08Speaker 1: and he said, let's go see it. And he literally
- 25:10Speaker 1: walked to the parking lot with me to look over
- 25:13Speaker 1: the gun, like not to get me in trouble, because
- 25:16Speaker 1: he thought it was cool. And then we just put
- 25:17Speaker 1: it back in the truck and he was like, man,
- 25:19Speaker 1: that's a great gun. End of story. Times have changed, Okay.
- 25:27Speaker 1: One more high school story about dipping. Scott was saying it.
- 25:32Speaker 1: When he was in high school, a bunch of students
- 25:34Speaker 1: would spend half day at vocational school and he describes
- 25:38Speaker 1: these ones as the Hicks and Hillbillies, and I like,
- 25:41Speaker 1: he doesn't. It's like, you got your Hicks, you got
- 25:47Speaker 1: your Hillbillies. And then it was me from his perspective.
- 25:51Speaker 1: And they load up by a bus. They had a
- 25:52Speaker 1: thirty minute uh ride down to Voke. They couldn't bring
- 25:57Speaker 1: empty bottles of spitting because the bus driver would know
- 25:59Speaker 1: what was going going on. But he said, it was
- 26:01Speaker 1: an old bust and there's a lot of rips, so
- 26:03Speaker 1: they would just spit into the rips of the bus seats.
- 26:07Speaker 1: After a while, the bus started to smell like rot
- 26:09Speaker 1: and chew, so they sum up a sting operation. He said,
- 26:13Speaker 1: the bus driver just inexplicably, in the middle of the ride,
- 26:16Speaker 1: stops the bus and runs back to catch everybody. Everybody
- 26:19Speaker 1: tried to attempt to spit out there chew, but a
- 26:21Speaker 1: lot of them got busted. All involved were suspended, made
- 26:27Speaker 1: to clean the bus from top to bottom, and they
- 26:29Speaker 1: had to buy new seat covers and install those seat covers.
- 26:34Speaker 1: On top of that, his parents grounded him for a month.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Moving on one of major correction. A major correction we
- 26:49Speaker 1: covered very heavily. These boys in Michigan. They were trapping
- 26:52Speaker 1: beavers and they were getting harassed. They're getting harassed. They're
- 26:56Speaker 1: traveling beavers in the area where there's an h O A.
- 26:59Speaker 1: And they do all their homework and they realized that
- 27:01Speaker 1: by God, we have legal access, legal right to catch
- 27:06Speaker 1: the beavers. And they go and make some sets and
- 27:10Speaker 1: someone comes out and writes what they write no more
- 27:12Speaker 1: something like that. Someone comes out and like throws a
- 27:15Speaker 1: rock and they're like springs or trap or the rock,
- 27:17Speaker 1: like drops a rock on their three thirty Connor bear
- 27:19Speaker 1: and springs it and they wrote no more on the ice.
- 27:23Speaker 1: So then these guys set up a trail camp and
- 27:28Speaker 1: on the trail cam they get a little group of
- 27:31Speaker 1: h o A people standing around staring at their beaver
- 27:35Speaker 1: traps and they're thinking, ah, the culprits caught them red handed.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Then we had them call in the show. And when
- 27:44Speaker 1: they called into the show, they were talking about we
- 27:47Speaker 1: know who did it. We got him on camera, like
- 27:50Speaker 1: it's them against the h o A. They were like
- 27:52Speaker 1: circles on the images to figure out who is who.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they're being like Joe Detective. Well they had
- 28:00Speaker 1: the good the goodness to write in and explain they
- 28:03Speaker 1: now have a major update. When when they put the
- 28:09Speaker 1: trail cam up and got a bunch of people staring
- 28:12Speaker 1: at their traps, guests, who was staring at their traps?
- 28:16Speaker 1: It was the president of the h o A with
- 28:19Speaker 1: a nuisance trapper showing them where the beavers were so
- 28:24Speaker 1: that the nuisance trapper could come kill the beavers. What
- 28:29Speaker 1: the trail cam did not pick up is the nuisance
- 28:31Speaker 1: trapper being like, well, it looks like someone's already doing
- 28:34Speaker 1: it for free, no need for me to get involved.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Very different. This would be like if Joyce the dock
- 28:46Speaker 1: owner was actually trying to lure in fish to improve fishing.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So did they ever catch the person who wrote no
- 28:57Speaker 1: more they do. It was a loan operator not associated
- 29:01Speaker 1: with the h O A huh. That story really starts
- 29:07Speaker 1: to make its own gravey, don't it. That does made
- 29:09Speaker 1: it twice, It made two batches agreed. Oh, one more
- 29:14Speaker 1: thing before we get into our questions, crint tell everybody
- 29:16Speaker 1: bought your big time antelope punt. Oh okay. So I
- 29:20Speaker 1: participated with a colleague at Meat Eater, Uh, Samantha Bates,
- 29:24Speaker 1: and our friend ru Mapp, who has been on this
- 29:29Speaker 1: here podcast, the founder and CEO of Outdoor Afro. And
- 29:34Speaker 1: this is the first year that the Wyoming One Shot
- 29:37Speaker 1: Antelope Contest hosted women participants and guides. So we participated
- 29:43Speaker 1: in Lander Wyoming. It's my first antelope hunt and it
- 29:49Speaker 1: was very I think I've calmed down from it, but
- 29:53Speaker 1: for a solid you know, a week or so after
- 29:56Speaker 1: the hunt, I was pretty uh buzzed. There. There's some
- 30:01Speaker 1: interesting rules you have. I mean, it's a timed a
- 30:05Speaker 1: timed hunt where you have you go out into the
- 30:09Speaker 1: field with a competitor and their guide and you kind
- 30:14Speaker 1: of hunt in the same general area and one person
- 30:17Speaker 1: one gets the first hour um hopefully gets an antelope
- 30:21Speaker 1: within that first hour. If they don't, they get the
- 30:24Speaker 1: third hour and you take over for the second hour.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And the point is for each hunter within a three
- 30:30Speaker 1: person team to get an antelope in one shot with
- 30:34Speaker 1: no manmade rests. Yeah. If God didn't put it there,
- 30:38Speaker 1: then you can't. Yeah, so I made a fence post
- 30:41Speaker 1: or anything. No, not a fence post meant to like, yeah,
- 30:46Speaker 1: it kind of like an older definition of good marksmanship. Yeah. Yeah,
- 30:51Speaker 1: it's not like a contemporary definition of good marksmanship. But
- 30:54Speaker 1: like you'll, like shooting over your knee kind of stuff,
- 30:57Speaker 1: making it count with one shot. You can use a
- 31:00Speaker 1: no bipods, right, no bipods, no backpack. Your knee is
- 31:03Speaker 1: arguably man made. But you can use your knee. You
- 31:05Speaker 1: can use your knee, you can lie prone, you can
- 31:08Speaker 1: rest your rifle on sage brush, a rock, part of
- 31:13Speaker 1: a tree, um, although you can jiggle a rock around. Yeah,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I should say that, I'm not. Actually no, I don't.
- 31:23Speaker 1: That's a that's a good question. I don't know if
- 31:26Speaker 1: you can. I think it's like you're just supposed to
- 31:29Speaker 1: put your rifle down on. You can't build, you know,
- 31:35Speaker 1: build something to or shift something to rest your rifle on.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And yeah, so the point is to have each team
- 31:43Speaker 1: member again antelope in one shot, which surprisingly so many
- 31:49Speaker 1: teams don't get. Uh, there's there are a couple of
- 31:53Speaker 1: teams where no one got one in one shot. There
- 31:58Speaker 1: was only Yeah, there were a bunch of team teams
- 32:00Speaker 1: where one or two people out of the three were successful,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and there was one team out of over I don't
- 32:08Speaker 1: know what do we have like twelve thirteen teams one
- 32:12Speaker 1: team were each person was successful in getting an antelope
- 32:16Speaker 1: with one shot, so that was the winning team. This
- 32:19Speaker 1: kind of friendly competition. It's a very friendly like a
- 32:22Speaker 1: bunch of money. Yeah, yeah, no, it was a very
- 32:24Speaker 1: friendly competition. Yeah. So I had I went out with
- 32:29Speaker 1: U to the same general area with my guide as
- 32:33Speaker 1: another hunter and their guide and the other hunter had
- 32:36Speaker 1: the first hour, and you're kind of supposed to roughly
- 32:41Speaker 1: keep track of where they are because you're in the
- 32:43Speaker 1: same zone. But they they kind of disappeared, and when
- 32:48Speaker 1: my hour was about to start, we we couldn't find
- 32:52Speaker 1: where they were. So my guide and I went off
- 32:56Speaker 1: and we mainly saw doze and there was an initial
- 33:00Speaker 1: opportunity that I think, you know, probably everyone in this
- 33:05Speaker 1: room would have taken um, but because I was so
- 33:08Speaker 1: nervous and couldn't steady myself. I didn't take this opportunity.
- 33:12Speaker 1: We were probably about two hundred one fifty yards away
- 33:17Speaker 1: from a group of antelope that in which there was
- 33:21Speaker 1: one buck, and I don't think there could have been
- 33:24Speaker 1: a better set up where we were able to get
- 33:27Speaker 1: out of the truck and then crawl to hide behind
- 33:30Speaker 1: a huge boulder upon which I could rest my rifle.
- 33:35Speaker 1: But um, I was just really freaked out around you know,
- 33:38Speaker 1: they're all moving slowly. There was only one buck. It
- 33:41Speaker 1: was in a group of does. I didn't want to
- 33:44Speaker 1: mess up and just couldn't. I probably had five seconds
- 33:47Speaker 1: of an opportunity and I just couldn't take it. And
- 33:49Speaker 1: then I was really upset for initially because I just thought, ah,
- 33:54Speaker 1: like that's it. I blew it like there was no
- 33:57Speaker 1: better set up than that, And we kind of drove
- 34:00Speaker 1: to a different area of the unit. We saw a
- 34:03Speaker 1: bunch of does and so no books, and then we
- 34:05Speaker 1: finally my guide's grandson actually spotted a loan buck and
- 34:12Speaker 1: we were kind of able to drive around this hill
- 34:16Speaker 1: and try to crawl up from behind and and get him,
- 34:21Speaker 1: and probably within about a hundred and fifty yards. After
- 34:25Speaker 1: some crawling, we we were able to see him, and
- 34:30Speaker 1: my guide noticed that he was walking a bit funny,
- 34:33Speaker 1: and we had found out that the other hunter in
- 34:36Speaker 1: the area had taken a shot at an antelope and
- 34:39Speaker 1: tracked it for a while, but then it disappeared. They
- 34:41Speaker 1: couldn't find him. So my guide was like, I think
- 34:44Speaker 1: this is this is the critter. And then I just thought, like,
- 34:49Speaker 1: my opportunity is almost up, like I gave up the
- 34:51Speaker 1: first one. This is it. I think I need to
- 34:54Speaker 1: just do it. I was so nervous, my heart was
- 34:57Speaker 1: beating outside of my chest. Oh god, I can d
- 35:00Speaker 1: of like having flashbacks. I could not control myself. I
- 35:05Speaker 1: was probably tearing up shaking. Yeah, I'm having flashbacks. So
- 35:11Speaker 1: I kind of did that, uh what do they call it?
- 35:14Speaker 1: Military crawl? The guy was kind of moving slowly at
- 35:19Speaker 1: I guess within one fifty and there was a flat
- 35:23Speaker 1: top rock that was really perfect that I was able
- 35:27Speaker 1: to get to and lying prone rest my rest my
- 35:32Speaker 1: rifle on, and I was just remembering what a lot
- 35:35Speaker 1: of people had told me before and during kind of
- 35:38Speaker 1: an earlier day of shooting practice too, really not think
- 35:42Speaker 1: too much, like if it's in your cross hairs, if
- 35:44Speaker 1: you can see behind the shoulder, like where you need
- 35:47Speaker 1: to take a shot, just breathe, relax, commit and do it.
- 35:52Speaker 1: So he was walking very slowly and I got him
- 35:57Speaker 1: in my cross hairs and I just told myself take
- 35:59Speaker 1: this out, and I took the shot and he dropped, so,
- 36:03Speaker 1: you know, and then I continued to be very jittery
- 36:07Speaker 1: and nervous for some time. And oh yeah, and then yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 1: I couldn't. I couldn't relax. And then I cried a lot,
- 36:14Speaker 1: and you know, hugged my guide and he said some
- 36:18Speaker 1: very Mickey said some very very kind words to me.
- 36:23Speaker 1: And he was he was a pretty He was a
- 36:26Speaker 1: beautiful creature, you know when you after you tag and
- 36:30Speaker 1: you kind of bring him to there's like a wildlife
- 36:33Speaker 1: and they're like students from a university. We had to
- 36:36Speaker 1: drive the antelope when I was down there. When I
- 36:39Speaker 1: was down there for it, I don't remember that. Remember.
- 36:41Speaker 1: We just took it to a lot. We just took
- 36:43Speaker 1: it to a dude I was hanging out with Locker
- 36:46Speaker 1: caught it up next. Well, this one grad student identified
- 36:52Speaker 1: this buck as being at least four years old because
- 36:54Speaker 1: he was looking at the you know his teeth um.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And he also had a very beautiful black stripe running
- 37:01Speaker 1: down the center of his face and nose, which I
- 37:05Speaker 1: guess if it is a younger animal, it's more brown.
- 37:08Speaker 1: It's just not as defined. Again, the cheek patches are
- 37:12Speaker 1: a little different. And then now I've got some antelope
- 37:16Speaker 1: in my freezer. Did you feel that it was mortally wounded?
- 37:19Speaker 1: Would have been mortally wounded like there? It was shot
- 37:24Speaker 1: in the leg front front right? Do you feel that
- 37:28Speaker 1: would have never it wouldn't made it through the winter
- 37:30Speaker 1: or don't you know? I don't know because it was broadside.
- 37:36Speaker 1: It's left side was broadside to me, and it was
- 37:41Speaker 1: its right front leg that was injured. So when I shot,
- 37:45Speaker 1: it fell to its right and when we approached it,
- 37:49Speaker 1: it's from its kind of elbow joint down was like
- 37:54Speaker 1: twisted around, and it had been walking prior to me
- 37:59Speaker 1: shooting it, So I couldn't tell if when he fell,
- 38:04Speaker 1: if the weight of his body plus the weakness from
- 38:08Speaker 1: that previous injury twisted. Yeah, So you don't know if
- 38:12Speaker 1: he was packing it weird or not? Uh? Do you
- 38:15Speaker 1: guys see on Instagram that picture I put up with that?
- 38:17Speaker 1: I don't know the people. We haven't talked to him,
- 38:19Speaker 1: but it was just floating around on Facebook as these
- 38:21Speaker 1: dudes and Oregon shot this bull elk. They had a mystery,
- 38:26Speaker 1: like a very mysterious broadhead. Oh yeah, lodge in the
- 38:30Speaker 1: roof it's mouth for a guy had hit it Boston.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Its tooth out and the broadhead had lived for I
- 38:36Speaker 1: don't know how long it was healed up, lodged in
- 38:40Speaker 1: the roof of its mouth. I have a vertebrother with
- 38:42Speaker 1: the broadhead built into it, like the bone is all
- 38:44Speaker 1: ossified around the around the broadhead. But I lodged in
- 38:48Speaker 1: there and I was like trying to figure out what
- 38:50Speaker 1: kind of broadhead it was. And it's funny because I
- 38:52Speaker 1: started sending it to I sent to Bill at iron
- 38:55Speaker 1: Will Broadheads, and he can't identify it. Is it like
- 39:00Speaker 1: really old? He's like, And then he sent it to
- 39:03Speaker 1: He sent it to someone in like the Broadhead Collectors Association.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Pat Durkin. Is funny because Spencer's laughed about this. Pat
- 39:10Speaker 1: Durkins sent it to the two people he knows who
- 39:13Speaker 1: are old broadhead collectors. Both of his broadhead collector friends
- 39:18Speaker 1: nowhere can identify it. No one of these was like
- 39:21Speaker 1: a type of broadhead one gas is this type of
- 39:24Speaker 1: broadhead like used to be used by trad bow hunters.
- 39:27Speaker 1: But it's not like this thing lived forever. I mean,
- 39:28Speaker 1: you know at its oldest at six seven years old.
- 39:32Speaker 1: So someone using some old ass hard to identify a broadhead.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Have you looked at it? Have you looked at it? Yeah?
- 39:39Speaker 1: If you go to my Instagram at Stephen Ronnell, you'll
- 39:41Speaker 1: find this picture. Crazy. Maybe it's some Steve. I think they.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I think they custom filed and sharpened the back edges
- 39:52Speaker 1: that Broadhead's one theory. The other theory is that they
- 39:55Speaker 1: got warned from being in its mouth. Oh I see,
- 39:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna say. Maybe it's some like tread boll hunters.
- 40:02Speaker 1: They like to make their own stuff. M yeah, maybe
- 40:06Speaker 1: someone made it. Well, I feel like he needs spend
- 40:09Speaker 1: a little more time shooting and making well. I don't
- 40:11Speaker 1: know any number of things I need to get all
- 40:13Speaker 1: saying you get in the comments section. And I had
- 40:16Speaker 1: said in my in my caption, I had said, I
- 40:20Speaker 1: have five or six questions I'd like to ask the
- 40:22Speaker 1: individual who shot the arrow. People took that to me
- 40:26Speaker 1: like a condemnation, like, oh, how could you be so bad.
- 40:29Speaker 1: That's not my question. My question is what the hell
- 40:31Speaker 1: is that broadhead? How did you get it? So it
- 40:35Speaker 1: entered the side of its face into the roof of
- 40:38Speaker 1: its mouth. Just various questions, not like you're a how
- 40:43Speaker 1: are you about? You know? Not a kind of but man,
- 40:46Speaker 1: people really jumped on whoever the dude is. No one
- 40:48Speaker 1: knows who the dude is. He really got a realm
- 40:50Speaker 1: and yeah got a good reaming. Okay? Uh? One guy,
- 40:57Speaker 1: So I comment here, here's one question that came in
- 41:00Speaker 1: on the show. Do you want to read the questions?
- 41:05Speaker 1: That's what you want? I don't know, either get stupid
- 41:07Speaker 1: or a good idea. I think you pack the question
- 41:10Speaker 1: do you want to answer? And you read him yourself?
- 41:12Speaker 1: That makes more sense. One guy said, how commented how?
- 41:16Speaker 1: And in the first episode of our new season, we
- 41:19Speaker 1: Hunt Antelope with Luke Combs, someone said, how I describe
- 41:23Speaker 1: how antalope smell like fried do a corn chips? Luke
- 41:27Speaker 1: Combs says that his dog smells like fried to a
- 41:30Speaker 1: corn chips. Someone says, what's Luke smell like? I couldn't.
- 41:35Speaker 1: I never got a good whiffle loop. I didn't get
- 41:37Speaker 1: freed dough like Yeah, he smells like what most humans
- 41:42Speaker 1: smell like. I would say, because I never like registered
- 41:45Speaker 1: anything unusual. Our buddy Casey says, he smells like free
- 41:48Speaker 1: to a corn chips if he doesn't shower for a
- 41:51Speaker 1: little while. What was that? Right? In case he does
- 41:55Speaker 1: say that his arm pits, he said, kind of like
- 41:57Speaker 1: he said, he kind of likes the smell. My daughter,
- 42:02Speaker 1: for whatever is my daughter wants to get a stick
- 42:03Speaker 1: of deodorant real bad. And I have no idea why.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And she said that she she says, if I don't
- 42:08Speaker 1: wear a deodor I smell like old macaroni and cheese.
- 42:14Speaker 1: That's probably because you probably have old macaroni and cheese
- 42:17Speaker 1: on you. Probably I didn't register smell with Luke. Now, Uh,
- 42:23Speaker 1: someone want to know how many beers I drank with Luke.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Those boys drink a fair number of beers. But but
- 42:30Speaker 1: rather to answer that question, I'll talk about what I
- 42:32Speaker 1: was drinking. I was. So the ranch we are at,
- 42:36Speaker 1: they have friends. This is the best ship on the planet. Man.
- 42:40Speaker 1: The ranch we're at had friends who run four J
- 42:45Speaker 1: b Q Sauces Marinus right for J barbecue sauces. It's
- 42:51Speaker 1: like four J Ranch for J barbecue sauces. He gave
- 42:54Speaker 1: me a jar. The guy who who owns the ranch
- 42:57Speaker 1: gave me a jar to stuff called Bloody fifty five.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I've which is bloody marry mix. Man, you take a
- 43:03Speaker 1: swill beer, just a regular shitty beer, good beer, good
- 43:07Speaker 1: beer when I think of its good beer, but swill yeah,
- 43:10Speaker 1: Like I think shitty beer is good. Same and people
- 43:13Speaker 1: like water. I'm like, I like water too. It's like
- 43:19Speaker 1: if you drink beer and people get mad that the
- 43:21Speaker 1: beer taste, they get mad about it. It's like, but
- 43:24Speaker 1: why would I not just drink things that I like?
- 43:26Speaker 1: And also why is it not making mad when I
- 43:29Speaker 1: drink water? I agree? Man, but I drink water. People
- 43:36Speaker 1: have such an opinion about it. But I think the weirdest, stupidest, Like,
- 43:41Speaker 1: if you're drinking beer, it should If you're drinking a thing,
- 43:44Speaker 1: it should taste like what it is. Its like I
- 43:50Speaker 1: like swill beer, yeah, I don't. Like. I don't. I
- 43:54Speaker 1: don't need that much flavor in my life. Like if
- 43:58Speaker 1: you're gonna drink beer for four hours, I don't need
- 44:01Speaker 1: every sit to and be like oh my god, you
- 44:05Speaker 1: know I agree. It's like you don't sit and eat
- 44:07Speaker 1: flag raw for four hours. He flog for a couple
- 44:10Speaker 1: of minutes. When's the last time you four hours though
- 44:17Speaker 1: slowly cleaning fish? I don't know. On that Luke comb shoot,
- 44:21Speaker 1: I'll drink beer. I'll drink I'll drink like two cans
- 44:24Speaker 1: of beer over the course of four hours. On Instagram,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I don't need that much flavor in my life. Oh
- 44:29Speaker 1: my yah, I needs the worst. On honests Instagram, you
- 44:32Speaker 1: can see a video of Janice and Luke shotgunning of beer,
- 44:35Speaker 1: which is extremely impressive. Great did you shotgun with him?
- 44:38Speaker 1: I don't know how. Never have we used to do kickstands.
- 44:43Speaker 1: We used to fill fish fish aquariums up with combat
- 44:46Speaker 1: juice and then you'd get lowered into it. That used
- 44:51Speaker 1: to be the thing you'd like to do. Do you
- 44:53Speaker 1: tell a story about something floating in the combat? We're
- 44:56Speaker 1: doing that one night when I was in this house.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I used to living with somebody's of mine, and we
- 44:59Speaker 1: were doing net where he filled a fish aquarium with
- 45:01Speaker 1: combat juice, and you know, then you get like, don't
- 45:04Speaker 1: you know, like they hold you up by your ankles
- 45:05Speaker 1: in there. Uh. The next day, look at it's just
- 45:09Speaker 1: like I remember it was like it goes seventy six
- 45:12Speaker 1: cents of changes in the bottom of that from shaking
- 45:15Speaker 1: out of people's pockets and in the surface of the
- 45:18Speaker 1: water was just hair brutal. Oh but I'll say about
- 45:34Speaker 1: these beers. So this bloody fifty five, here's what you do.
- 45:37Speaker 1: You get yourself a swill beer. It annoys my brother
- 45:41Speaker 1: because I'll pour the top off. He likes to drink
- 45:44Speaker 1: the top off. So what, however, you go. If you're frugal,
- 45:48Speaker 1: you drink the top off. If you're like me, you
- 45:51Speaker 1: pour the top off and top it off with bloody
- 45:54Speaker 1: fifty five. If you want to get real good, you
- 45:57Speaker 1: get a turkey baster. Um. You know, I knew some
- 46:02Speaker 1: people one time that that it was a couple too.
- 46:06Speaker 1: It was a couple and they wanted to have it
- 46:08Speaker 1: was it was a two women that wanted to have
- 46:11Speaker 1: a baby. They were a couple and they um wanted
- 46:15Speaker 1: one of their brothers to be the donor and did
- 46:20Speaker 1: the whole thing with a turkey baster. Huh. Successfully, you
- 46:26Speaker 1: get yourself a turkey baster. It's a different one, and
- 46:34Speaker 1: you draw This is why did I I I fell
- 46:37Speaker 1: so in love with this drink that I'm telling everybody
- 46:39Speaker 1: about that. I bought a turkey baster for this purpose.
- 46:42Speaker 1: You get yourself a turkey baster, suck the bloody fifty
- 46:46Speaker 1: five out and then injected into your can. You're really
- 46:52Speaker 1: good at sound effects. I think you need to make
- 46:54Speaker 1: a whole Yeah, ejected into your can mess free m
- 47:01Speaker 1: that's pretty impressive. I like to do two good glops,
- 47:06Speaker 1: too good. That's the official glopsal right there. How many
- 47:14Speaker 1: beers did I drinkle loop? Not many, but I sure
- 47:17Speaker 1: enjoyed them because I had that jar that stuff, and
- 47:21Speaker 1: that stuff is good expensive to order it, which my
- 47:26Speaker 1: wife I talked up so much. My wife got me
- 47:28Speaker 1: something for Christmas, but I had to pay shipping it.
- 47:30Speaker 1: It's better to find. Oh, I mean, if you're gonna order,
- 47:32Speaker 1: order a whole bunch because you don't want to be
- 47:34Speaker 1: shipping around one jar that stuff. This this here question
- 47:37Speaker 1: inspired a whole lot of topic coverage. Or or you
- 47:42Speaker 1: can order some forest floor foods Bloody Mary makes too
- 47:45Speaker 1: about that kind? There you go. Yeah, we talked about
- 47:48Speaker 1: on this here podcast before. You never sent me anither
- 47:51Speaker 1: Chester take it away. I got some in my house.
- 47:56Speaker 1: I think there's some sitting upstairs right and I'll drink
- 47:58Speaker 1: every drink, every last drop of that Chester. That's pretty
- 48:03Speaker 1: similar to a meat chelada, right, that's it's like beer intimation, dude,
- 48:10Speaker 1: um bud light chilada ice fishing. I haven't tried one.
- 48:15Speaker 1: When it gets real cold out and it gets slushy
- 48:18Speaker 1: and your ice fishing, but you got your warmed. You
- 48:20Speaker 1: got like a lot of clothes and a fur hat on,
- 48:23Speaker 1: so you're hot, but it's cold and your chiladas slushy,
- 48:30Speaker 1: very tasty there, Yo, those days are coming. Oh, I
- 48:34Speaker 1: think you can order some forest flour foods stuff off
- 48:37Speaker 1: the meat Eater website coming to Oh, that's gonna happen.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I think it's gonna happen. Yeah, how about some forest
- 48:46Speaker 1: flour food stuff on the old auction house Chester? Is
- 48:49Speaker 1: it really? It's gonna be one of a kind. I
- 48:52Speaker 1: don't know how it's gotta come where. It's gotta come
- 48:55Speaker 1: with you going to their house and singing and making
- 48:58Speaker 1: him a drink. But yeah, that's a great auction, like
- 49:02Speaker 1: an old fashions Here it goes again. Chester plays guitarshion
- 49:10Speaker 1: from even More. Yeah, well you know what, speaking of
- 49:13Speaker 1: Danielle Other Danielle, Danielle's dogs going up on the auction house.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Very soon. We're gonna put up on the auction house
- 49:19Speaker 1: that you bid on Chester's Family's pickles mixes. You've been
- 49:24Speaker 1: on a forest floor food drink mix right, This isn't
- 49:31Speaker 1: this isn't actually happen until it happens. But hear me out, Chester,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you buy a forest floor foods food box, the old
- 49:41Speaker 1: fashioned box. When you buy it, Chester comes to your
- 49:47Speaker 1: house and makes you a drink and sings you a song. Chester,
- 49:50Speaker 1: you don't have to put up with this anymore. Sto auction.
- 49:58Speaker 1: It's gonna fill start writing the apologe Duran's gonna fill
- 50:02Speaker 1: a Mason jar with Buckman juice while someone watches him
- 50:07Speaker 1: do it. You can't go to their house and sing
- 50:11Speaker 1: a song. I never said no, but I'm just trying
- 50:17Speaker 1: to picture it, like how that was very weird interaction.
- 50:22Speaker 1: I'm here, what do you guys double single? It sounds
- 50:29Speaker 1: like you got planned out, dude. Someone asked on one
- 50:33Speaker 1: of our episodes, we had a mountain We had a
- 50:35Speaker 1: mountain go hunt episode and I whiffed a shot at
- 50:38Speaker 1: a mountain goat that it was like around three yards away,
- 50:41Speaker 1: and whipped a shot at it. Um, they're like, whatever happened?
- 50:46Speaker 1: How did you miss that shot? I missed that shot?
- 50:48Speaker 1: Of the whole bunch of reasons, I'll explain a couple
- 50:50Speaker 1: of them. One, it's been a long day. I mean
- 50:53Speaker 1: as much as that's an excuse, Um, climbing around had
- 50:57Speaker 1: to have like spent a few hours climbing around with
- 51:00Speaker 1: ampons in the snow. Everything was cold and wet. Finally
- 51:03Speaker 1: get up on the mountain goat, it's bedded down. If
- 51:06Speaker 1: you ever been in a situation where you're laying down
- 51:08Speaker 1: in the snow waiting for something to stand up, and
- 51:10Speaker 1: he's been hiking a lot, you just start getting cold,
- 51:13Speaker 1: so that becomes the thing, and then you start thinking, man,
- 51:15Speaker 1: I can't lay any longer because I'm gonna get so cold.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I'm shaking so bad and shivering because now I'm all
- 51:19Speaker 1: soaking wet laying the snow, and the early is going
- 51:22Speaker 1: to my head. Is like if the mountain goat stands up,
- 51:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna I don't know what's behind him, Like you're
- 51:27Speaker 1: hunting very cliffy stuff. And in fact, uh, had he
- 51:32Speaker 1: gone over that thing? Did you ever go up there? Yes?
- 51:35Speaker 1: That was very uncomfortable. Had he gone up over Like
- 51:38Speaker 1: had he fallen the other traction, it would have been
- 51:41Speaker 1: very like a weird hard place to extract him from.
- 51:46Speaker 1: So I was thinking, might have needed ropes. Yeah, he
- 51:48Speaker 1: might have needed ropes and had to get dirt miss
- 51:51Speaker 1: climbing gear, and I'll have to go fetch him, uh dicey.
- 51:55Speaker 1: So in my head I'm thinking you got hit him,
- 51:57Speaker 1: and you got hit him in the high shoulder, got
- 51:59Speaker 1: him in the high shoulder, because when you hear people
- 52:00Speaker 1: say like him with the high shoulder, it's like you'll
- 52:02Speaker 1: you'll drop it quick. So I'm think I'm gonna hit
- 52:04Speaker 1: in the high shoulder. But it's it's you know, November.
- 52:08Speaker 1: What I hadn't been really plotting on, uh, because I
- 52:12Speaker 1: just lost in sort of the heat of the moment.
- 52:14Speaker 1: For one thing is that he's got eight nine inches
- 52:16Speaker 1: at wool on top and shoulder. They're not nearly as
- 52:19Speaker 1: big as you think they are. Like you stripped the
- 52:21Speaker 1: hide off, it looks like a normal goat land there. Yeah,
- 52:24Speaker 1: Like how many pounds of meat off this one creature?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Just to get a sense of size or how much
- 52:30Speaker 1: that's a great que I carried one the other day. Um,
- 52:34Speaker 1: I carried all the meat from one the other day,
- 52:36Speaker 1: and I did not feel that my backpack was that heavy.
- 52:39Speaker 1: There was like a one trek and poll pack out. Um,
- 52:43Speaker 1: I don't know what the hell is it? What is
- 52:45Speaker 1: in one? I don't know. Very low yield though, Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 1: they're all they got a huge gut. They're eating all
- 52:50Speaker 1: that low quality forage. They got like an enormous digestive track,
- 52:54Speaker 1: huge gut. Not a lot of meat. They don't run.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Small backstraps I remember for that, small bags, not very wide. Yeah,
- 53:04Speaker 1: there's not like a girl. They're they're not. You get
- 53:07Speaker 1: to hide off him in your eyes, like wow, there
- 53:10Speaker 1: can't be forty pounds. And I don't know. Is there
- 53:12Speaker 1: forty pounds of bones? Meat? And the mountain goat? Maybe
- 53:15Speaker 1: a big one that's more. I don't you know. I can,
- 53:18Speaker 1: I can find out, but I don't know. Off top
- 53:20Speaker 1: of my head. I could do some bath and figure
- 53:21Speaker 1: it out. I carried like bone. I carried one out,
- 53:25Speaker 1: bone in, and I don't think my backpack it's got
- 53:27Speaker 1: any more. There's no way my backpack weighed more than
- 53:29Speaker 1: eighty pounds, and I had the whole thing on the bone,
- 53:32Speaker 1: including rib slab in my backpack, and I think my
- 53:34Speaker 1: backpack weighed eighty pounds. It's like antelope size. So anyways,
- 53:39Speaker 1: I'm thinking about high shoulder. I was not accounting for um.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I was not accounting for all that wool. I was
- 53:50Speaker 1: also off in how I clicked. I was off in
- 53:53Speaker 1: my hold, and I was also off in my zero.
- 53:56Speaker 1: I was high on my zero. So each of these
- 54:00Speaker 1: things contributed a little bit. And I took off a
- 54:03Speaker 1: hunk of wool which hangs on the wall of the
- 54:06Speaker 1: podcast studio. If you look carefully at the hunk of
- 54:09Speaker 1: wolve that that bullet took off that mountain goat, you'll
- 54:12Speaker 1: see that there's a teensiest little bit of like like
- 54:16Speaker 1: leather kind of attached to it. So we made a
- 54:20Speaker 1: little dirt myth made me a little plaque where there's
- 54:24Speaker 1: the wool that I knocked off, and that's called the miss.
- 54:27Speaker 1: And then above that is a picture of the mountain goat,
- 54:29Speaker 1: and that's called the hit. But I took that hunk
- 54:32Speaker 1: of wool off his back. It's like it's too flattened
- 54:35Speaker 1: cotton balls. Should put a picture of that on your
- 54:38Speaker 1: Instagram or something, Steve, when this episode drops or something
- 54:40Speaker 1: like that. I don't know it would be great idea.
- 54:42Speaker 1: That's the best idea. Thanks guys. And the in the
- 54:48Speaker 1: back of the thing. He oh, he burnt in lessons learned. Yeah,
- 54:53Speaker 1: Dirt myth got into making picture frames. What a thoughtful dude.
- 54:57Speaker 1: He made a beautiful picture frame for me that hangs
- 54:59Speaker 1: right when you're right when he come into my house,
- 55:00Speaker 1: one of his picture frames is hanging there. It's got
- 55:02Speaker 1: moss and ship on it or like, uh, it's beautiful.
- 55:06Speaker 1: He's a crafty little feller spell checker though he needs
- 55:09Speaker 1: a spell checker. He made lessons possessive. Listen. I don't
- 55:13Speaker 1: think Dirt puts a whole lot of From what I
- 55:16Speaker 1: know about Dirt, I don't think that there would ever
- 55:18Speaker 1: tell you that that's his specialty. I don't think he
- 55:20Speaker 1: specializes in spelling. Does not specialized in spelling. Why wave
- 55:27Speaker 1: a white flag when you're anilal hunting That's an old trick.
- 55:31Speaker 1: That's an old trick. My older brother, I have a
- 55:35Speaker 1: I have an older half brother. He was in his
- 55:38Speaker 1: late seventies, oddly then the net surprising seventy years old.
- 55:44Speaker 1: He was um. He was a hunting guy for a
- 55:46Speaker 1: long time in Colorado. He was the first guy I
- 55:48Speaker 1: ever talking about waving something white at him, and he
- 55:50Speaker 1: was a hunting guy a million years ago. He would uh,
- 55:54Speaker 1: he'd carry a white white flag. You know, animal got
- 55:56Speaker 1: a big white side on him. Yeah, like an animals
- 56:00Speaker 1: reddish brown, but he's got a huge white flank. It
- 56:03Speaker 1: ain't for hiding. It's for finding each other, you know,
- 56:08Speaker 1: when the sun shine out of that thing like they
- 56:10Speaker 1: live in. They live spread out a big, huge flat country.
- 56:14Speaker 1: They're ridiculously fast for any predator that it's out there
- 56:18Speaker 1: as an adult, just like hiding is not on their
- 56:21Speaker 1: sort of they're not worried about hiding. They don't when
- 56:23Speaker 1: they bed down. They bed down in very obvious places.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Like antelope don't do anything to hide. The more pressure
- 56:29Speaker 1: they're under, the more they want to lay up high
- 56:31Speaker 1: where they can see everything that's going on, and they
- 56:33Speaker 1: don't do anything to conceal themselves. I think that big
- 56:36Speaker 1: white side is just a way the antelope keep track
- 56:39Speaker 1: of antelope, and one with a buck and some other
- 56:44Speaker 1: ones too. If you just take something in a white
- 56:46Speaker 1: thing and wave it and then hide it so it
- 56:49Speaker 1: sees the white but never gets to really get a
- 56:51Speaker 1: read on the white nine out of I don't know,
- 56:54Speaker 1: maybe not nine out of ten times. Eight out of
- 56:56Speaker 1: ten times that thing is gonna close distance on you.
- 57:01Speaker 1: They just they you like if you if he doesn't
- 57:03Speaker 1: know you're there, or he's like, what is that thing
- 57:06Speaker 1: over there? And you wait to hold a game bag
- 57:08Speaker 1: up and let a game bag blow on the wind
- 57:10Speaker 1: and then put it down. He's gonna start walking in
- 57:12Speaker 1: your direction. Caribou if you if you sorry, what's that
- 57:18Speaker 1: with cariboo? If if you see care, they're gonna pass
- 57:21Speaker 1: you buy and they're not gonna get close to you
- 57:22Speaker 1: and you're hidden, stand up and walk around from it,
- 57:24Speaker 1: then lay back down. They I mean they drop everything. Yeah,
- 57:32Speaker 1: you get a hunch over, walk around him, and then
- 57:34Speaker 1: lay back down. And usually they're gonna start because like
- 57:41Speaker 1: it's either a grizzly, a cariboo, or a wolf. It's
- 57:43Speaker 1: a If it's a grizzly a wolf, I'll just see
- 57:46Speaker 1: that and turn away. If it's carribou, I want to
- 57:47Speaker 1: go hang out. You're like exploiting their gregaris, very similar
- 57:51Speaker 1: to putting decoys out for a ductor go ahead and stuff.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Um Our dog is like similarly colored to antelope brown
- 57:59Speaker 1: and white, and we've had at antelope see the dog
- 58:02Speaker 1: and like come running in to see, like to get closer,
- 58:06Speaker 1: just because I'm assuming, Just because I'm assuming, just because
- 58:11Speaker 1: it looked like from a distance, she looks like a
- 58:15Speaker 1: little antelope in a way. Uh. They you know, during
- 58:19Speaker 1: during the rut, they decoy very effectively too. But I've
- 58:22Speaker 1: used that game bag trick all the time, and I
- 58:24Speaker 1: keep a game bag always handy. Antalope putting Clay take
- 58:28Speaker 1: on this question about respecting to kill man? Have you
- 58:30Speaker 1: looked at this one? How prepared to you? You know?
- 58:34Speaker 1: I did? I did see it. I'm probably a six
- 58:38Speaker 1: and a half. Yes, this feller writes in I don't know.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Maybe I'm assuming a fella, I don't know. He says,
- 58:49Speaker 1: I was explaining to my wife about respecting to kill
- 58:51Speaker 1: an animal after it's harvested, and she was down for
- 58:55Speaker 1: it and understood. But then she happened to be watching
- 58:59Speaker 1: the rack who to the episode with Clay and Janice,
- 59:02Speaker 1: and she grew livid when y'all showed mingus the hide
- 59:07Speaker 1: in the tree, asking how the heck does that respecting
- 59:10Speaker 1: the animal's life? I didn't have an answer for I
- 59:14Speaker 1: got an insight, just like Clay will take it out.
- 59:16Speaker 1: But I'll explain real quick. Uh, Janice is training a dog.
- 59:21Speaker 1: He's training mingus as a hunting dog, a tracking dog.
- 59:25Speaker 1: He wants to be able run raccoons. Wants to be
- 59:26Speaker 1: able to run lines. So in order to help the
- 59:29Speaker 1: dog make the association between to connect all the dots
- 59:34Speaker 1: of what was happening, Janice, Uh, shook the raccoons hide
- 59:38Speaker 1: by the tree. Got the dog excited about the raccoon,
- 59:42Speaker 1: excited about the tree, just to help the dog connect
- 59:45Speaker 1: all the dots, like, oh, raccoons in the tree. They
- 59:47Speaker 1: got the raccoon. Now we get the smell that and
- 59:49Speaker 1: play with it. Um. So, Eric Clay, how how is
- 59:52Speaker 1: if you use it for dog training, does that inherently
- 59:55Speaker 1: make it disrespectful? No? I would. I would have to
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: say that, you know, to me, the holistic experience of
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: using that animal. You know, we we took the meat
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: from that animal, We harvested the hide from that animal,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: which we we we tanned, and and that is in
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the auction house of oddities right now. Yeah, it's in there. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that's awesome. So I mean, I just I personally wouldn't
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: have viewed that as disrespectful at all. I mean, if
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: you're if you're looking at the macro picture of the
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: massive explosion of an unnatural populations of raccoons in the country.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: The best thing that you can do for living raccoons
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: is train raccoon dogs to go out and harvest the
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: over abundance of raccoons. So it's like this circle of
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: life thing. You know what claims referred to there is
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: raccoon prices are at historic lows, and you have a
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: incredible number of raw coons on the landscape right now, um,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: which can be detrimental to a lot of other species.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Great for raccoons potentially until they get the until they
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: get infectious diseases that spread through them. That's right now.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: You know, I just didn't. I would have never viewed
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: that as being disrespectful to the animal. I mean, we
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: didn't let the dog wool on it or anything. You know. No,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: if you had a leather throw toy and train your
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: dog with that, um, would that be disrespectful to that cow?
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: No one would ever bring that up. If you threw
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: an old shoe, an old leather shoe for a dog,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: You're like, get a boy, Get a boy. Is that bad?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: It's made of leather. Yeah, yeah, put that in her
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: pipe and smoke it. They the dogs, the dog toy
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: aisle at the pet stores just loaded with pig's ears
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: and cow hooves. And oh, that's a good question, all
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: sorts of stuff. Is that disrespectful? I don't think it's big.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: No one cares about respecting fire animals. No, I mean no,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: cause can farmers do consumers don't? Clay. Here's a nother
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: one for you. Did Mingus do well behind the scenes?
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: And how is Mingus training going? Mingus is Yanni's dog.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Yanni got a pound puppy. He went down to the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: pound and got like a hound dog. Yeah, you know what.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I so prior to this hunt, Janice had talked about
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: bringing Mingus, and I actually discouraged him a little bit
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: from it, just because I did not thinking, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: three nights of hunting that the dog would catch on
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: at all. And and so I was. I guess I
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: didn't discourage him. I just I didn't try to say, hey,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: this is gonna be really good for this dog. And
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: incomplete honesty, I was pretty shocked at how quickly that
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: that dog was was tree and raccoons And what you
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: wouldn't have seen is that Yanna stayed two extra nights
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: after the shoot and we went out in Mingus absolutely
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: struck and tread on a coon. I mean just not
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: all by himself. My dogs were there too, but you know,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: so the dog did fantastic. He he really had the
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: ability to catch on quick to to tree an unseen game,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: which that's the trick with raccoon and with the big
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: game hounds. A lot of times they're seeing the animal
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: in a tree because just a larger animal like a
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: mountain lion or a bear is sometimes visible, their scent
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: is really strong. A raccoon hound has to be a
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: little more nuanced because he's totally tree and off of scent.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: And man, Mangus really did awesome. And what was also
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: kind of stunk Steve is that, you know, we really struggled.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I mean in the raccoon hunting was not where I
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: figured we would have trouble. Dude. We were in a
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: cold snap that made national news. Oh yeah, there were
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: woodpeckers laying all over in the woods. That throws the death.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: It was we're wandering around the woods were dead birds,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: but they looked perfect, like perfect dead birds laying there
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: that had froze the death. Yeah. Well, the other two
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: nights that that we hunted, we just the coon hunting
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: was great, you know after after the shoot. Yeah, finally
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: warmed up. Yeah, it warmed up a little bit. Another
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: question for you, Clay. So, on the episode with Clay
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: and I are hunting white tails and Texas, I bust
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Clay's ratlin anilers, which I'll point out or in the
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: auction houite of bodities right now. M h the very
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: ratlin andlers. And he wants to know if Clay's ratlin
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: anlers were ready to snap or were you giving it
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: an extra bit of juice? Mm hmm. Okay, So I
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: am a strong man. Let me I can know my
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: own strength. Okay. There's a little bit of history of
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: those antlers. One of the antlers was a five point
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: side of a buck that my dad acquired at a
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: like a like a bow shoot uh door prize event.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: It's a beautiful probably a hundred and forty inch side,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: and I saw it off the brow time. The left
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: antler was a sure enough Ozark mountain shed that I
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: picked up in two thousand five on and I'll tell
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: you the property it was on the kick Line property,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: and so it had been land there since two thousand five.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: I mean, I mean it had not been landing. It
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: had been you know, off the off the deer's head
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: since then, and it had no indication of fracture or breakage.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: And on the first set of our hunt, yeah you
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: broke it, man, wasn't there some squirrels chewing on that?
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: There was a touch of squirrel chewing, but it was
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: not on the G one, which is what Steve broke.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I can't remember two. It was a G two. I'm sorry.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Did we go looking for the broken chunk? I feel
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: like I remember looking for but I can't hear if
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: we found it. Yeah, you know what. I carried it.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I carried it around the whole hunt and I can't
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: find it now. You sweet and you picked it up
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in the episode. Yeah, good eye said, I got another
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: one for you. Clay, all right, you're getting a lot
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: of action in everybody. Someone wants to know what this is.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Also in the auction House of Bodities, what was Clay's
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: shotgun revolver making model? That thing looks so cool. That's
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: what that thing's got going for it is it looks cool.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: That's right. A lot of comments. Yeah, thanks it that
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: was a rossy circuit judge. And it's a four ten.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: It's Revolve the Revolver four ten. Uh. That also shoots
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: forty five caliber bullets. And you know what, I I
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: want to get a modified choke for it. It truly
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: would be a great squirrel gun. And I used it
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: and I enjoyed. I really enjoyed carrying it. I need
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: a modified tighter choke. That was the only thing. It
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: shoots a pretty uh, pretty pretty loose pattern. But yeah, man,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: I love it. I really enjoyed carrying that gun for
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: squirrel hunting, but need a tighter choke. You can learn
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: more about that gun on our website. Steve wrote an
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: article we pulled the Shawn September called the Guns and
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Meat Eat Your Seats and Tanny talks about six of
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: the guns used in the five Episodes's good Spencers, Hey
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: on the On the episode, we called it the peacemaker though, yeah,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: were we calling it in an error? Well, we just
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: dubbed it that. It was a nickname. It was. It
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: was just kind of a nickname. Oh I missed one
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I was going to bring up. Would I have thought
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: of the Mountain goat hunt as a success. Had I
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: killed a nanny, I would have kept that at it
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: and just got I know, I wouldn't have done that.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I mean I had in my head to find a
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: billy and I was gonna find it. I was gonna
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: find a billy if I had had to go and
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: not get one out of gone and not got one.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: But would you like have felt badly No, if you
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: would have gotten in nanny. No. But I just had
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: in my head when I was gonna do it, and
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna change what I was gonna do. But
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: that's my career advice to I think they're more framing.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: And if you misidentified and walked up and why did
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: they say that? That's why I took that. Oh, had
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: we misidentified, no, I would not. It would have been
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like No, I wouldn't have Uh. I would have been
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: disappointed in our ability to like make that. It's a
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: very hard thing to do. I'm anything but an expert,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: but I would have been. Yeah, I would have been.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: It would have been a complicated one for me. I
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: would have been disappointed. Steve, let me ask you this
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: when you walked up to it, what was the percentage
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: chance in your mind that it was ability. I mean,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: were you like hundred so were a while And it
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: even had like the piss stained hump. It just had
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: all the trimans, had all the trimans. And at that
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: point we had looked at we had just been able
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: to look at a lot of goats. And the other
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: thing is we're able to This is when it gets
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: helpful is when you have a mixed herd. Because by
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that by by that point they were starting to get
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: ready for the rut, and so billies were moving in
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: with the nannies. So not only when it's tricky is
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: when you're looking at all nannies are you're looking at
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: all billies. But when you got him lined up, it
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: becomes like when you have a bunch to compare, you
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: can It becomes very easy when you have stuff to
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: compare it to. And like I said, he had like
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: the rubbed flank. He was pissy colored, he was more
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: yellow than everyone else. You could compare the horn structure
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: with everyone else. Do you remember when we spotted that group,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I was down below, I'm like, oh, there's a billy.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: There's actually two billies, and they remember and then you
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: guys were like looked at him. You're like, oh, that's cool.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Chester kind of wrote it off that group. Yeah, and
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: then Seth about twenty five minutes later, looks in that group.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: It's like, oh, there's a billy. You guys are good work. Seth. Oh, Phil,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: you know that song we're gonna make about me being right? Yeah?
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Do you want to do that? I'll do it for
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: a chance to play with Chesters. It's gonna sound a
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: lot better, a lot more details. I drink your milkshake,
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: ain't drinking up. Chests just trying to get in on
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the He's trying to get it in on the on
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: the post glory. No, I really don't care, but I
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: thought it was pretty funny. I appreciate that. That's kind
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: of thing to burn my ass. Man. I still be
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: walking around with that too, Chester, I still be walking
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: around it. Everyone smile. Chet looks at me weird. I'm like,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: what do you say? It's just pissed. There's a good saying. Um,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: vengeance is a dish best served cold. Oh there you go, Chet,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Oh on the top, here's the hell of a segway
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: on the top of the horns. Remember I was saying,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: how you can see that you could compare to billies
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and the nanny's horns when they're all standing there together.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Someone said they never thought about this until we brought
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: it up on the episode Prong horn are the only
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: animal that shed their horns annually. And he's got him
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: to wonder, and is the material instructure of horns? How's
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: that different than antlers? Well, yeah, so horns are made
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: out of here. Here's a very like under give it.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: You probably know a lot about the spencer. I gonna
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: give a very sort of like superficial understanding. Horns are
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: made are crat nous. They're made out there. They're made
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: out of the substance that your hair and fingernails are
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: made out of. Yet, I was recently cutting some antlers
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: from my wife to make jewelry out of cut and
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: when you're running the same across the saw, it smells
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: like when you're at the dentist. Antler smells bad. Antler
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: smells like burnt hair when you cut. Yeah, it smells
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: like like when when you're getting when you're like, that's
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: what it smells like, antler or horn antler cutting antler
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: smells like burnt hair. Yeah, And he used to cut
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: a lot of antler. But you're not even talking about
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. And you were talking about antlers. First,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: I thought, okay, all right, listen, because I'm trusting that
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: you probably know a lot about this, because it seems
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: like the kind of thing you know. Maybe not, I
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: don't know, you don't know anything about it. I'm just
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: saying a way to generally begin to understand, like a
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: very superficial way to understand the difference between horn and
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: antler material. Horn is hair like, it's cratinus. It's made
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: out of the in fact, the antelopes. When you're looking
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: at the new growth on an antelope, it's almost like
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: you can look and see the hair turning into horn. Like.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: It starts out as a hair like fiber that turns
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: to horn. And is it hollow ish ish you it
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: has a bone core when you So it's getting a
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: little bit complicated. Let me talk about horn stuff in
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: general for men. Okay, what do you guys say? You
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: say when you pop them off their hollow? It's yes,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: but they're formed around. Let me just set the table.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna talking about horned ship in general, big horns, Okay,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: doll sheet bison prong horn. Yeah, mountain goats they have
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: what are you taking a big in him? No reason,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: I'm doing great. That is a hair like structure that
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: sits over a bone core. When you take a big horn.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: If you find an old big horn deadhead, a lot
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: of times the horn will have rotted away and what
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: is left is a bone core. So that thing's skull,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: it's skull has these big gass blades that come out
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: of it and go up and fill the base of
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: the horn. Right, yes, antelope American prong horn to be
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: like more, more, more cracked, more contemporary American prong horn.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: First off, they don't have any kinfolk. They're the only
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: member of their genus. There endemic to North America, so
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: they're found nowhere else, no other At the end of
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: the at the plis to scene Holocene transition, all their
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: cousins vanished from the face of the earth. They're the
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: only member of their genus. They are one of a kind.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: They have a horn that sheds annually. When that horn
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: comes off, underneath it is the new horn already growing,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: and it's a slick, little gross, little growth under there
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: looks like madded hair. And then it comes into its
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: own as a horn. If you kill an antelope and
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: you just go clean it, like let's say you take
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: an antelope and you beatle, clean it or boil it,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: and you don't take that horn off, you are in
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: for a treat. Because some time will go by, and
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: this happens to people all the time. Some time will
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: go by and all of a sudden something doesn't smell right,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, your whole house doesn't
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: smell right because you need to get that horn off
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and clean out all that funcation that exists between the
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: bone core and the horn. To get sheep off, like
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: when we clean doll sheep, you'll put it in in a
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: contractor bag. You put the whole damn head into contractor
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: bag and pour some water in there, and tie it
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: up and leave it out in the sun, and then
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: get yourself piece of plywood, and once you've got it
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: good and rotten, you take it out and throw it
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: at the plywood to But to pot the horns off
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: stinks like holy hell, some of the worst stanch you
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: ever experienced. But it has that same like Harry condom
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: look just nasty look, because he's not building a new one.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: He's not building a new one under there, because the
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: sheep has his horns for his entire life. Okay, so
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: the problem horns are the only ones that have that
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: weird because they're shed because they're growing, that new one
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: grows underneath, and it's like when your little kid. You
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: don't have any kids, but either way, if you do,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: your teeth to fall out and there'll be a new
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: one waiting there in line. That's how their horns are,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Like the new ones waiting there in line and kind
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: of like shoves the old one off. Yeah. I remember
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: looking at that for the first time. I was pretty gross.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: It's like a it's like a tight skin around there.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: When you boil it, you to like score it ye,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: and then you can once it's boiled, you and like
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: peel it all. It's like a little condom over the
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: bone core. And they do have like a hollow cavity
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: in them. Korean Um in college, I shot like a
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: year and a year ago. There's expense, we know, and love.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: I shot like a year and a half old antelope,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: which would have made for like a really really unimpressive
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: European mount. So I pulled it's horns off and it
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: made a shot glass with one of them. Because it
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: held exactly an ounce of liquid in it. You still
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: got it, no abuse it. It's a good auction house,
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: it's right. And I imagine as you get like a
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: two and a half year old, three and a half
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: yeld four and a half year old, you're probably getting
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: too like a big shot glass volume at that point.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: If you listen to this podcast, you know that um
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: age doesn't lead to big antelope. For a long time,
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: the world record antelope out of New Mexico was three
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: years old. Yeah, but there's certainly that's six. They go downhill,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: there's gotta be difference between like a one and a
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: half and a four and a half year absolutely, yeah,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: but they but they top out. They can top out
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: at three. But that's the same with like a white
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: tailed deer. They'll they'll peek at like six and a half,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: seven and a half and then started going downhill. Well,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: these go these go downhill way earlier. I don't even
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: know we're arguing about it. Antler antler is an understanding
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: horns and Antler's Antler's bone like very similar to bone,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: the structure very similar to bone. That's why for a
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: long time. You know, like certain things become like certain
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: things you say, become fashionable, and it would be that
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: some years ago it became a thing where you call
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: pronghorn goats and also in the whole damn world calls
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: them goats goats. I just had a guy said I
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: got a goat tag for some unit. I'm like, I
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: don't really had a mountain goats net unit. He's like,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: oh no, I mean I was so confused at one shot.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: For a hot second, I was calling it a goat,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: and I'm like, what it became very hip to call
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: him goats, and for a while ago it became very
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: hip to call antler bone a lot of bone. Look
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: at all that bone. Tom Spencer, h yeah, here's one
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: for your steth. You didn't even get to the question
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: part of why, Like we talked about antelope horns for
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: ten minutes. What's the question because guy asked you about
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: just like, oh no, teerless rock, sure of horns different
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: from antlers. I was like, I hallucinated that, like the
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: dick you did. I was thinking during the episode you
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: had talked to him. You're like, yeah, now sometimes you
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: find these things just laying around. I was like No,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: you don't. You don't find those on the prairie. I've
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: never wanted to find one. On the episode, I know,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and that's what I'm saying. I was very impressed. I
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: don't think the last long. No, I don't think so either.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: That's why I was very impressed. They're like, yeah, Luke,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: you can find these things just laying around and then
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: shed horns. I wonder if, like the coyotes and whatnot,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: come and chew them up, because they're similar to like
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: sheep and water buffalo horn sheds that are dog dog
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: choose such a thing. Yeah, they don't last like an antler,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Like the structure is not that strong. They rode away quick.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: But I found a bunch of them. I bet I'll
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: find one this weekend hunting with my kids. That's cool.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: I've I've never found one. You don't look at the
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: ground very much. Being a rockhount, I think, yeah, but
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: you're too fixed on rock. You do notice horn. You
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: gotta look from something looks like wood. Here's what's easier,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: bow hunting or flintlock hunting? Um? Well, Rick and chime
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: in almost I want to hear from both you. That's
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: that's so if you were to approach both the same way.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Like bow hunting, you'd sit in the tree stand right
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: or on the ground, but in in a in one
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: spot if you're bow hunting white tails. Yeah. So if
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: I was to take my bow hunting set up and
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: add a flintlock to it and not a bow, I
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: would say bow hunting because I know my bow is
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: going to go off even if it's raining. What about
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: a traditional bow? Why wouldn't I go off in the rains? No? No,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I'm saying like I'm saying like there's a difference between
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: a traditional bow and a compound Like I know what
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: you mean. I would say a muzzler is easier and
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: you can be more accurate with a muzzleloader, a flint
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: lock muzzleloader than a trad bow. I think it's like
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: effective range versus um. But I think if I'm sitting
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: in a tree stand and if I have flintlock or
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: a bow, I feel like the bow is going to
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: be more reliable, you know, on average? Yeah, that makes sense,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: and and you know, easier to to get a shot
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: off just see, like you said, you know what's gonna go.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: But yeah, but if I'm running around doing drives and stuff.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: I think the flint locks just an easier thing to
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: deal with. Corect I would agree on that, Yeah, I think,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: although I'm curious, like if we hunted in a much
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: drier climate, would we have a little bit different you know,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: you know that that's a factor humidity, and obviously we
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: saw that on that hunt. But I think, like say
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I said, the type of hunting kind of comes into it.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: But yeah, i'd say accuracy, range of the weapon, and
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: it's pretty awesome with the muzzleloader versus a bow, but
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: then the is it going to go off, especially in
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: any kind of damp or more human climate. So I
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: don't know really what you say is harder or easier.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: It's kind of situation dictates, it depends. It's the answer,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: that's your answer, the official answer. Yeah. Guy wrote in
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: why don't you use blood tracking dogs to trail wounded
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: animals when you hunt in your episodes? Just mad availability.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I don't know if we had, but I can't think
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: of any situations where I don't really know. I can't
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: think of any situations where wouldn't legality also coming because
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: some states are still think around board there is a
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: question legality, Uh, we use a blood tracking dog in
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: between shoots last fall and a deer hunt, remember on Michigan,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: I do, yeah, And the other day I had a
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: friend um their day, I had a friend hit a
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: box and he felt like he got it. He felt
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: like he got it good, but it wasn't bleeding good.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: But he's still just by looking at the arrow, he
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: felt like that has to be a dead deer. But
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: he couldn't find because he went into a cornfield, a
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: thick corn field, and there's not enough blood. And so
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: he's like, they just looked and looked to look um.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: And he asked me, abou knew anybody had a tracking dog?
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: And we're trying to get hold of Yan because Yan
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: he's kind of more tied into that. But I called
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: a friend of mine has got lion hounds, and he said,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: they're not blood trailing dogs per se, But my god,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: do they find dead and dyeing stuff like they can't
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: help themselves. So I said, well, how do you know
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: when they find he? So I'll put GPS collars on
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: him and turn them loose and if there's something dead
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: out there, they're gonna know about it. And so he
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: goes out there with my friend and my friend goes
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: around the other side of the cornfield in case this
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: thing comes busting out. He said he hadn't even gotten
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: finished walking around the cornfield and phone rings just they're like,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: they just are on it. So he sees all the dogs,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: you know, they come together and quit move and he's like,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: there's something holding their attention to it's the deer. That's cool. Yeah,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: is that's basically like a bloodhound. Oh, he's good at
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: spotting blood. I used to be. My eyes went bad.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Blood track has got hard. I like blood track as
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: good as spoting blood got a little little blood spotters.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Here's one for you, Clay on the mule based episode,
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: So we need an episode of hunting squirrels off mules.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Do the cinematographers that's a generous term. Do the cinematographers
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: we call camera dudes, but that's I'm joking. Do the
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: cinematographers and crew have to hoop it the whole time?
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Or do they also get mules? This is a real
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: point of contention. Yeah, yeah, we don't get mucles. I've
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: been on shoot from they have mules. It's hard. It's
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: hard to be up and down. It's hard to shoot
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: off for mule. It's hard on when we did that
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: hunt in Wyoming, that horseback hunt Wyoming, that that kind
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: of stuff is just hard on equipment because horses or
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: mules are always running you into brush and stuff you
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: can't kind of you can't control it. But no, we
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: usually don't for long pushes. Everybody will have a horse. Yeah,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: but it's hard to do your work on the horse. Yeah,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: and people almost get where they rather was run. Yeah,
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: because it's hard to fill them right. And I mean
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: we may we may not be sitting on mules or horses,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: but we we do offload some of our gear onto
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: the horses that make us a little lighter, more fleet
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: of foot for getting around. Yeah. I know I said
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: that was for you, Clay, but it want I'm not
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: being for you. I guess Clay's part of it is
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: it's Clay's fault for not having mules. For everyone, you
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: need to get more mules, Clay Man, Hey post Covid.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: It's it's a hard market, hard market for mules. Everybody
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: thinks they're mule skinner all of a sud Well, I
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: just you just there. They doubled or tripled in price.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Have you ever thought about breeding mules clay like not
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: mules because you can't, but like trying to make mules.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: You know, if I had a bigger place, I probably
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: would try to have some mayor horses and raise a mule.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: But but you just need a lot of ground, you know,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I need a lot of ground. Hey, they can't talking
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: about cameraman walking though, you know they did a lot
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: of walking on our squirrel hunting and on other mule
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: hunts we've done, Steve, I mean, you know, I remember
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: that first day when the first day we shot for
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: the squirrel hunt. Um Tyler's whatever kind of device he
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: was using to track check himself, you know, he he
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: felt like we went eleven miles that afternoon. So that's
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: that's a lot of walking for the camera dudes. And
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: we did more than that the next few days. No,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: A good way to think about camera guys. Imagine yourself
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: out hunting birds with a dog. You walk a mile,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the dog walks five miles or more. All this zagging around, Yeah,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: camera guys get some miles on that. That sho was
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: tough because we would then go coon hunting that night. Yeah,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I was pretty happy with the canon that I got
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: to drive around in you're feeling good in there. Yeah,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: how do I find traveling on mule back? I quite
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I quite enjoy it, man, I like it. Um. Yeah,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: I don't know that. I'm not like a sophisticated enough
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: of a horseman a muleman to have like strong opinions
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: about mules versus horses. But I can say that I
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: have no desire to travel fast on horseback, like I
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: have no interest in galloping, so I don't need an
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: animal capable of galloping. This is not my thing to
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: gallop around, to gallop through the mountains. We would we
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: wouldntess you come off from mule a couple of times
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: on that on that episode. Oh yeah, I fall off
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: those things. But I'm like a cat man. I was,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I gotta. I wasn't gonna bring it up unless somebody
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: brought it up. I was. I was impressed with you, Steve,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: uh that you weren't afraid of the mules. And and
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: and I have seen the three guys that I've put
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: on mules in this year, your honest being one, you've
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: been one, and then uh my buddy Dave Gardner, and
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: I'll I'll tell on him, have had the same have
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: actually getting on the mule with heavy packs have fallen
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: over the top of them and landed on the ground. Um,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: and uh, it's yeah, they're they're tricky, man, They're tricky
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: sometimes just to get your balance. And then you got
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: pulled off by a wall of briars. One time was
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: my fault, Yeah, no, it really what You just got
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: raked off and the mule just went through. But no,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: the second time, your mule was trying to hop onto
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: a road, Yeah, and it like jumped the ditch and
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: kind of sent you flying slipped on the ice. Yeah. Hey,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Michael Ranger wouldn't have been able to hang on for that. Hey, Michael,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Michael Lanier, who's a veteran horse and mule rider, bit
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the dirt and I've never seen him by there. Hey,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: that was treacherous conditions for riding mules. Man. Yeah, I
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: had I think three crashes. I got drug off by briars.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: The horse fell on the ice and I just stepped
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: off because it was laying on the ground, and then
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I got kind of like thrown off, I guess. Yeah.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: And then Michael Lanier, his big mule, was trying to
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: sidestep of frozen What what happened is weird walking down
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: these old roads that were covered in snow, but they
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: were big mud holes underneath the snow. But look, it
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: looked like just like perfect flat dirt road. And then
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: the mules got on it and they were standing on
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: sheets of ice, so they started getting super spooky. And anyway,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Lanier's mule sidestepped what he thought was a mud hole
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: and then jumped and Michael just came sailing off and
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: landed on his back. Yeah, I was treacherous, man, it
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: really was. You know, it's funny. The other day we
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: were hunt mountain goats, one of our colleagues at a
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: mountain goat tag. We're all hunting mountain goats and we're
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: going down this trail and there was a tree falling
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: over in the trail and you can see where guys
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: have been in there hunting on horseback. And you could
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: see on the the on the trail head side of
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: this tree that they had gotten into a terrible ruckus
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: with their livestock about jumping that tree. Because the ground
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: the size of this studio were in the ground was
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: just ripped up hoof prints toward a hell where you
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: can say that no, they could not get those things
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: to jump that tree, and in there is a uh
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: sig magazine full of nine millimeter shells and it perfect
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: fit for Garrett's pistol. Oh nice. Yeah, so some guy
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: got into a big blow up, lost this pistol, lost
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: the magazine on this. So if you're looking for your magazine,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: one guy said, for High Mountain Goat episode, on average,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: how long are you sitting in glass anywhere? From like
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: a real glass and sash could be at a minimum,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: like a legitimate glass and session could be at a minute,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: thirty minutes, or it could be eight hours. We're on
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: cous here, we'll sometimes spend the whole day sunrise and sunset. Yeah,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: and just one or two spots just watching. Well. Yeah,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: it was tricky too because there was snow. If there's
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: no snow, it's yeah, that changes things. You can cover
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: some more ground quicker, Yeah, because with your glass one
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: because mountain goats are white, so if there's no snow,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: you can burn through a lot of ground. But when
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: there's snow, you gotta slow down. You're more looking for
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: their tracks. You wind up looking for tracks in the snow.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Then you follow the tracks until you find the tracks,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: stop and then looking there's something standing there. It's very
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: hard to find them in the snow. They're a little different.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: They're a little different colored than the snow. They're a
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: little more pissy colored, but hard to find. The snow
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: changes everything. Hunting doll sheep in the snow is tricky.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: You gotta look. Did a lot of looking for tracks
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: on then you look for tracks and follow the tracks
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: and try to see what's going on. All right, So
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Craney got one last question. Yeah, um, I wanted to
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: know what other states have a muzzleloaders season and then, uh,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: you know that whole the whole deer drive situation seemed
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: very complicated, with a lot of room for things to
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: go wrong. So just kind of curious about the thought behind,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: you know, planning that and going into it. Who wants
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: to start? I know Montana this year has a it's
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: not like a flint locks season to say, but it's
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: a like a primitive muzzleloaders, like a late primitive muzzloader season,
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: which you can use flint locks, match locks, percussion, percussion cap.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: If someone's out there with the matchlock, I give him
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: all the You can use a regular old Joe blow muzzleloader. Well,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: no like the like the like cap like a percussion
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: not no modern inline style. What does percussion style mean? Um? So,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: how in the episode he saw there was flint striking
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: a frizen and it starts that powder there is almost
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: like a primer. Think of it as like a cap
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: that's like a primer in a center fire cartridge. You
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: slip that on a nipple that is essentially a tube
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: that goes down into where the main charges and there's
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: a the hammer is cupped and when it hits, it
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: strikes that cap with a lot of force and does
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: the same chemical reaction spits an ignition down through that tube. Yeah,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: it's more reliable. So yeah, that was like the progression.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: You had flintlocks and then technology you had a percussion stuff.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Got it? Yeah? So but most states, to answer your question,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: creant have a muzzle inter season. But it's just that
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Pennsylvania is unique and they're the only one that by
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: law flintlock is the newest technology you can use. It
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: has to be a flintlock ignition. It cannot be percussion,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: which they changed it, and they were pioneers to like
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: they got going on before, So I think they change
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: it now that can use a percussion stuff, or in
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: the early season you can use a percussion there's there's
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: like an early October where you can use something in
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: lines and stuff. But to your second part of the question,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: deer drives are there's a lot that goes into its culturally,
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: it's it's pretty neat and it's an aspect of hunting
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: that's not talked about a lot um. There's definitely pros
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: and cons, but there's a whole I mean, that's like
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: an hour long subject to talk about how to move
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: deer across the landscape, especially with the number of the
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: big factors like number of people, what's the weather like.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: We had very crunchy snow which affected us. And I
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: do want to point out one thing from the episode
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: that I feel like, depending if you don't if you're watching,
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: you understand when you were trying to make sure all
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: those deer didn't go down It's like, we know deer
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: go downhill a lot and drives, but there's a private
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: property boundary there that we cannot hunt on the other side.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: So you're also in the East Midwest, you're trying to
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: manipulate deer around. Maybe we're topographically contour wise. They want
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: to follow the contour or go down or any think,
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: but you cannot because they're going to go into private
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: So now you're trying to force a situation that isn't
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: kind of natural. So that's like a whole other aspect
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: of like a good crew that knows how to do
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: a drive. Um. Yeah, and that in that drive when
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: all those deer were going down, we're just low on people.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: We would have more people we could have, should we explain,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: like what a deer drive is like for people that
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: don't know, Do they know what we're kind of talking
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: about right now? Take it away? Yeah, go for it.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: So in a deer drive, rather than like people traditionally
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: just sit and wait for deer to come to them,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: that just be like regular old hunting typically. Um, a
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: deer drive, you'll have people trying to push deer towards
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: another group of people who are sitting there waiting on
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: the other side of the woods or a marsh or
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: thick cover. Everybody packs big dip. Everybody, everybody packs big dip.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: It's usually after you just watch the packers beat the vikings.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: And in the Midwestern States, Uh, it's a huge part
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: of their culture. I mean, I feel like people are
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: getting away from the deer drives now but um as
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: much as they used to do them. But anyways, you're
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: trying to push deer from their betting area. Two guys
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: that are sitting and waiting or what pushers and watchers
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: or drivers and sitters. You can call them sal Dakota.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: We call them walkers and blockers come up. Pushers and
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: what do you guys call them something stupid chasers and
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: I call them drivers, drivers and posters. I do them
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: posters because you're staying the post. So anyways, let's say
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: you have a forty acre woods and you'll probably designe
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: who's gonna go sit and who's gonna push however you
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: want to do that, draw cards or whatnot. But the
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: sitters will go on one side and they'll find little
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: spots to sit out and usually once they're set, the
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: pushers we'll go to the other side, and then they'll
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: start walking towards the other guys um and between somewhere
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: in between there. Hopefully they chase up some deer and
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: they push them over to the sitters, um and you
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: try and shoot them. It's most effective when you've been
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: doing the same push we called it doing a push.
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: You're driving deer, but you do a push. Uh, when
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: you have a push that you do generationally because you know,
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: because it could be like you could have a certain
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: you could have a farmer chunk of woods whatever, and
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: it's it seems I don't if that's true, but it
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: feels like you could take every deer off it and
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: put all new deer on it and give those deer
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: a year and they're gonna leave that patch of woods,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: are going to sneak out the backs drive the same
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: area and be like, here's what's gonna happen. If the
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: winds the right direction, they're gonna go up that rich
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: or they're gonna come right along here, or they're gonna
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: go just left to that maple. And like and if
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: you do it once a year and don't overdo it,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: but you save that drive and do that drive once
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: a year, it gets to where you have great precision
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: and how it's gonna play out. And then you're then
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: you're like, oh, who gets who's gonna go on that
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: seth You go up to that spot And I was like, no, no, Rick,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: you go up to that spot and that gentleman that
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: first drive where Steve had a little mishap with the
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: set trigger that I put you up high because behind
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: you was a shale slide and the deer generally go
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: up and they go above that shale slide because they
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: don't like to go across it. Yeah, so like you
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: learn how they're gonna do it. We had two main
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: drives growing up, and we just knew. The first year
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: I killed was on that drive when I was thirteen, um,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: and I shouted for me to fill because they go
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: up the ridge. I could see the just all I
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: cauld see is like for me to fills, like the
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: white throat patch sticking up above the edge of the thing.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: That sounds fun, great time. I feel like they're football
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: analogies or like children's games analogies like it. It gets
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: pretty serious because very fun. I've been with Cruise where
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: you you get to the gas station more than they
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: pick teams, and you're on like B team all day.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if B team's posting, you're posting. If
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: your drive B team is driving, you're driving. And there's
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: a guy who gets appointed a captain, and like if
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: there's a bunch of arguments about what drive to do next,
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: doesn't matter. The captain, like he makes the final decision
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: about what you're doing, so we can get it's pretty.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: It's an awesome culture. Maybe you're driving. I'll tell you this.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: Deer driving is very blue collar. Yeah. Maybe meetaters shouldn't
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: be playing kickball. We should started deer drive team. Yeah
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: you can't in this Uh, in some states you can't
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: dear drive. You can't, but you can't do it deer
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: driving the state. If you look at how the legs
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: are written, you can't do it. Dear drive, but do
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: you drive? Is right? It's very blue collar. It's very scrappy. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: it's not like uh, you know, it's not like you know,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: sitting around you don't do a deer drive, then go
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: have like, uh you know, a glass of red wine.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Deer drives and drink bushlights. Yeah, you don't, like, oh,
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: bourbon up and tune cup and smoke a cigar. It's
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: like not deer drive it. You might pack dip put
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: a little bloody merrymakes into a swill beer. Yeah, you
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: can smoke a swish around the deer drive, no problem.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: And if you want more on Flintlock. On October, this
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: guy we published an article written by Jordan Sillers called
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: a Brief History of flintlock Hunting in America where he
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: takes you from the nineteenth century to why not the
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: eighteenth century? Well, because the technology sort of started in
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: the sixteenth century, but the golden days were the nineteenth century,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: so that's where hen't even throw to the eighteenth century.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: It's it's brief, but it basically starts in the ninete
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: that's a good article. How to read it? Alright, Spencer
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: new installment, we're gonna close out. We've been answering questions

- 1:46:04Speaker 1: These are born out of the These are born out
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: of the four verticals of meat Eater. What are they Steve, Hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: and wild foods. And there is a prize. Meat Eater
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: will donate one hundred dollars to the conservation organization of
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: the winners choosing the first time we play Brody one
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: with six correct answers. The second time, Steve one with
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: four correct. This time, I'm thinking, uh, it will take
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: another six pack to win, so I'm gonna need to
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: bring your a game now. We can't wait to run
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: this because I got I'm gonna run my own and
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: you're gonna play good. We have some housekeeping from last time.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: In the last episode, I asked what the term el
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: dente refers to, and the answer was the duneness of
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: pasta or rice. Sam Nichols and Bradley Shreking Gost reached
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: out and said that it can also apply to grits.
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: This was made famous by the movie My Cousin Vinny,
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: when Vinnie asks Mr Tipton about his breakfast play the
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: clip force Phil, Oh, I'm sorry. You testified earlier that
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: the boys went into the store and you had just
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: begun to make breakfast. You were just ready to eat
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: and you heard a gunshot. That's right, I'm sorry. So
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: obviously it takes you five minutes to make breakfast, right, right,
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: so you knew that. Do you remember what you had?
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: Eggs and grits? Eggs and grits. I like grits too.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: How do you cook your grits? You like regular creamy
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: or out dente, just regular. I guess regular, instant grits.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: Oh self respect and suddenly uses instant grids. I think
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: proud of my grids. So thank you Sam and Bradley
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: for that info. If you said grits when I asked
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: that question, you also would have been correct. Also, I
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: asked what the name of the legendary fish was interrupt
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: your quirt. Yeah, people were pissed about that question because
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: I didn't feel it was like appropriate. You were piste
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: about that question. Other people were pissed. Okay, alright, I
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: saw the email you sent me. The email people complaining
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: about how I had nothing to do with nothing one person,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: so you and one person. Also I asked what the
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: name of the legendary fish was that Max and John
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: tried to catch and grumpy your old man Chester confidently
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: as Walter, which was incorrect. The correct answer was catfish hunter.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I had. I had about twenty people reach out and
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: said Chester was thinking of Jane Fonda's nineteen eighty one
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: movie on Golden Pond, were Billy and Norman grow obsessed
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: with trying to catch Walter the trout. Well, handy, Jane,
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: So maybe that'll make you feel better. And finally, I
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: challenged our listeners on the last episode to figure out
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: who the four representatives were that voted against the Endangered
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: Species Act of nineteen seventy three. Eli Favreau reached out
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: to the Library of Congress and got us that answer.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: It was Robin Beard of Tennessee, hr Gross of Iowa,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: Earl Land Greeby of Indiana, and Robert Price of Texas.
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: Thank you, Eli. Those also like names from a long
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: time ago, so it sounds like nineteen he used to
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: be running around now, all right, And that brings us
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: to meet Eater Trivia play the music, Phil, Look, I
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: need to know what I stay in to win everything.
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I'm saying, just tend to win everything. Well done, Got
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: Spencer is good? I feel like Spencers get posched away
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: by a real game show, Jeopardy real quick. Before we
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: start the game, claydie, have something to write on I do? Oh,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: You're ready? Awesome. Clay is the only guy on the
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: planet that's so honest that I trust him to play remotely. Yeah,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: me too, I would never trust myself to play remotely.
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: Do Google searching? Okay, alright, first question and like the
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: last time, the last two times we played This one
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: is going to be multiple choice. The topic is public lands.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: What state has the southernmost glacier in America? Utah, Wyoming,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: California or Colorado. Which state has the southernmost glacier in America? Utah, Wyoming,
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: California or Colorado. I feel like I got this one wrong. Dad,
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: damn it. Hold on, Clay, don't be showing your answers yet.
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: Damn what you got Cuddy. I have my glasses on
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: so I can only see a full stuff. I'm holding
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: back to the right time here. I will prompt you
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: into show your answers. Does everybody have an answer? I'm
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: not happy to reveal your answers. I am seeing one
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: person got it right Chester. The correct answer is California.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: All states? Why why is that a public lands question?
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: Because it's on public lands? All four states mansions have glaciers,
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: but the southernmost in the USA is the lily Put
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: Glacier in California. It is about twelve acres in size
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: and lies on the shaded north facing vertical cliff of
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: Mount Stewart in the Sierra Nevadas. It actually grew five
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: percent in the nineteen seventies to nineteen nineties, but has
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: been shrinking ever since. I knew I should have put
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: that down. What elevation is it that I don't know?
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: It's one of those like, oh, I didn't know that questions,
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: Well done Chester, the second it's Chester, Chester. Did you
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: guess or did you actually know? Guest? It was educated.
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: That's right, he knew the Sierra Nevadas were high and cold.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: So question to the topic is cooking. If a recipe
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: calls for s p G, what doesn't want you to use?
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: Here's an example in the chef's notes. It may tell
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: you to generously apply SPG to a deer steak before grilling,
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: or to a fish filet before battering s p G.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: The example, again is in the chef's notes. It may
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: tell you to generously apply this to a deer steak
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: before grilling, or to a fish filet before battering. A
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: lot of people right now in their answers fast Chester,
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: do you have an answer? No? Everyone reveal your answers
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: anyway we have. Steve says, salt pepper and garlic. Karin
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: says salt pepper and grease. Clay says salt, pepper and
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: garlicper have an answer. Creative answer by Rick is salt,
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: pepper ground and then pepper ground Seth couldn't come up
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: with the g He said, salt pepper question mark the
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: correct answer. The correct answer is salt, pepper and granulated
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: garlic or garlic powder. Dude, come on correct correct, My goodness.
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: So we had Steve get it correct, we had Clay
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: get it correct, and that it very very proud of
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: that right answer. This acronym is especially common and divisive
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: in the barbecuing world, where it's a popular rub for
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: Ribi's filam and yon, brisket, tenderloin, chicken breast, chicken wings,
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: pork chops, and more. Some swear by a ratio of
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: one part salt, two parts pepper, and one part garlic,
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: while others think the correct ratio is one part of
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: each and the third camp swears by four parts salt,
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: two parts pepper, and one part garlic. Now, if you
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: want to make this easy on yourself, our friends, it's
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: by stylogy. Actually sell an SPG rub that they say
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: is their most versus Hoyle Bland. You can find good
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: job SPG guys. Guys can get a call from a
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: real game show. Do you have a contract with us later.
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: Why don't we start again the handshake agreement With the
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: third question, the topic is waterfowl. Now. This next question
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: comes to us via Samuel Saucier. If you have a
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: question that you think is right for Mediator Trivia, you
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: can send it to Trivia as a mediator dot com.
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: Listen to this, keep thinking, I'm like at a different thing.
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: The question I'm at like some show couldn't be this podcast.
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: The question, again via Samuel, is what was the most
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: harvested duck in America? In? What was the most harvested
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: duck in America in? I think this might be one
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: of those questions I don't know. Again, if you have
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: a great question, like Samuel, send it to trivia at
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com most harvested duck? Does everyone
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: have an answer? I'm going out on a limb reveal
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: your answers. Steve says, coot, Chester says green heads, Karin
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: says Mallard, Clay says mallard, Phil says Mallard, uh Rick
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: says Mallard, and Seth's is green wing teal The correct
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: answer is Mallard green I mean green head. I will
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: give it to you this stad you can't green heads.
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: That's what people call them males. This I will give
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: it to you. This status from the U. S. Fish
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: and Wildlife Service there were two point nine million mallards
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: killed in followed by the green wing teal at one
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: point two million. Not a stupid answer, get all at
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: one million, wood ducks at nine hundred thousand, and blue
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: wing teal at eight hundred thousands. Why I put coop
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: down because you're allowed to get like that's kind of
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: a stupid answer. But here's the thing. Here's the thing
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: in a lot of trivia people focus on like, like
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: I said, it's a type of question that inspires the response.
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: You're like, oh, I didn't know that. Of course it's mallard's.
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: But I put down coots thinking it was like a
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: surprise question. I get it. Last time I was doing
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: the same thing. I put green wing teal because like,
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: the Southern States are pounding teal for months before the
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: our seasons come in close. Was a thoughtful answer, though.
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: Thanks against Samuel for the question. The fourth question, the
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: topic is fishing. Legendary angler Bill Dance is famous for
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: wearing the same origin white cap with an upper case
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: T on it. For the last fifty years? What does
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: the T stand for? Legendary angler Bill Dance. You've probably
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: seen his bloopers. Maybe you've seen him bass fishing. You've
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: probably seen his show. I think it was like Bill
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: dan Saltwater Adventures. Dude's been around forever. Is famous for
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: wearing the same orange in white cap with an uppercase
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: T on it for the last fifty years. What does
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: that T stand for? Does everyone have an answer? Reveal
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying titillating. We have Chester
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: saying Texas Football Team, Karin saying nothing. We have Clay
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: saying Tennessee, Phil saying tight lines, Rick saying University of Tennessee,
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: and seth saying Tennessee State College. The correct answer is
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: the University of Tennessee. Yeah, I mean that that was
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: given when I said Tennessee, University of Tennessee. That's right.
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: I will give it to you. Bill helped the college
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: recruit a high profile football player who was a big
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: fan of fishing in the nineteen sixties. As a thanks,
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: Tennessee's coach set Bill a few hats. Bill then war
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: one during a big tournament later that year which he
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: won from that point forward, it be came his lucky
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: charm and part of his identity. Now there were some
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: context clues. They're like the origin white. Is there even
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: a Tennessee State College? Now? I don't think, I mean maybe,
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: but I feel like you made that up. You should
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: just left it. Tennis, I knew, Yeah, I knew going
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: into its gonna be question question five. After this question
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: we will get a score update from Phil. The topic
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: is gear. Some of the most popular binocular sizes among
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: hunters are eight by forty two, ten by forty two,
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: and twelve by fifties. In optics lingo, what does the
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: first number represent? Eight by forty two, ten by forty twos,
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: and twelve by fifties? What does the first number represent?
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: Give me there? I feel like I had to help
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: out the room after last time. Last time, it's kind
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: of about blood bath. So does everybody have an answer? Chester,
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: you're still writing. You will reveal your answers in three
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: two one. We have Steve saying magnification. Chester, you're saying
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: how far you can see? Coren saying magnification, Clay saying
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: I can't read his handwriting. I think I got it
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: all I had magnification. Power crasted out and wrote diameter
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: of lens. We have Phil saying thickness of glass in millimeters,
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: We have Rick saying magnification, and we have Seth saying magnification.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: The correct answer is magnification. So does how far you
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: can because the second number refers to the objective lens
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: size or aperture, which is measured in millimeters. The bigger
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: the number, the wider the lenses, and brighter the image.
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: Phil hit us with a score update, I gotta, I
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: gotta update. This won't give me a second, So Steve
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: out at, Karine got it, Rick got it. Everyone but
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: Clay and Chester correct. We don't. We don't use a
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: lot of botos in Arkansas. You're gonna say just the
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: eight for them boys, all right? Stephen Ronella has two points,
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: Chester the divest has one, Karin the producer has two.
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: He's got to oh, I didn't had his last one.
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna edit this south to making sound smart Californian greenheads.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: Chester has two, Karin has to, Rick Hutton has three,
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: Seth has one, Clay has three, and I have one,
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: putting Clay and Rick tied for first. Alright, what if
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: no one counts so many coots get killed. I would
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: be confident that they do because they have a bag
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: limit for them, and when you take your survey they
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: ask you that one. We're halfway through the trivia. The
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: sixth question is public lands. Steve an't gonna like this
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: one either. I already know because it's like dubiously tied
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: to pulpit lands. Yes. In the year two thousand, the
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: International Hydrographic Bureau voted to add a fifth ocean? What
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: is this ocean's name? In the year two thousand, the
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: International Hydrographic Bureau voted to add a fifth ocean? What
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: is the ocean's name? And I would be very curious
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: if you're listening to this and you got kids in
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: like elementary school or middle school, if they have an
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: updated textbook, like if it has this in there or not.
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: I would love to know the answer, um, because I'm
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: very curious what is the fifth ocean's name? The room
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: looks very stumped. What year did you say? Again? The
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: year two thousand? Because say where it is? I will
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: not accept that answer. This is the least confident the
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: room is looked. Yet, does everyone who is going to
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: create an answer have an answer. Yes, yeah, Karan is
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: still writing. I will have you reveal your answers. Now
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: we have Steve saying antarctic. We have Chester with nothing,
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: we have Karin saying nothing. We have Clay saying southern,
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: we have Phil saying Antarctic, we have mix saying great
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: legs and Seth with no answer. The correct answer is
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: southern or Antarctic. So most of the room came through. Listen.
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: That happens to be my favorite live under public lands.
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna agree with Steve that you threw me off
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: with public lands. Yeah, yeah, public waters. You have something
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: for the folks who aren't hardcore hunters and nangagography. And
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: now did you say it could be accepted as the
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: Antarctic ocean? Correct? I'm just trying to tell him my
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: my lead here. Yeah. Now, the i h O asked
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: this question to a survey of its sixty eight member nations.
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: Only twenty eight nations responded, all of which voted in
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: favor of adding a fifth ocean, except for Argentina. Now
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: this is where it gets messy. And why South Pacific
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: and North Pacific and stuff like that. Now, this is why,
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: this is where it gets messy. And why. Twenty one
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: years later, the I h O is still in limbo
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: of officially recognizing a fifth ocean. Eighteen votes were cast
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: to call it the Southern Ocean, while ten votes were
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: cast to call it the Antarctic Ocean. Even more controversial,
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: the nations couldn't decide on if it should start at
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: the sixtieth parallel south, fiftieth parallel south, or thirty fifth
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: parallel south regardless, Organizations like Miriam Webster, the c i
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: A World Factbook, Encyclopedia Britannica, and National Geographic Society all
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: now recognize a fifth ocean as the Southern Ocean or
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Antarctic Ocean. You hate it? No, I like the great
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: phenomenal question. Stupid category. All right, the seventh question, he's cooking,
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: What is the unit of measurement that indicates how spicy
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: a pepper is? What is the unit of measurement that
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: indicates how spicy a pepper is? No? Multiple choice? No, no, no, no.
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: Like when you look at the menu, how many peppers
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: they have lined up next to you? It's not a
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: buffalo wild wings, but you do see this term thrown
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: around in grocery stores. Mm hmm. Everyone have an answer. No,
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: I'm not gonna reveal your answers. We have Steve saying, uh,
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: what is your caps can the caps can scale. We
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: have Chester saying Skillville. We have Karin without an answer,
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: cat change a measurement. We have Phil saying Scoville. We
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: have uh, we have Rick saying tears, and then Clay
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: and Seth do not have an answer. The correct answer
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: is Scoville heat unit. Well done the folks who got
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: it right. This scale is named after its creator, American
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: pharmacist Wilburg Scoville, who invented scale in nineteen twelve. For reference,
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: a bell pepper is zero, a jalopeno is five thousand,
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: half an arrow is two hundred thousand, and a Carolina
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: reaper is two million. God, he needs to do like
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: you know when when remember when you used to go
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: to Mexico and things costs like eighty thousand pasos and
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: then it does acts a bunch of zeros off, so
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: also knows like eight pay cells. Then you did you
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: know keep between one and ten it's like thousand. I
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: knew that. Yeah, I screwed that up. Question A. The
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: topic is conservation. There are nine species of sturgeon native
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: to North America named two of them. Nine species of
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: sturgeon native to North America. I need you to name
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: two of them. I originally had it as three, but
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: I think this room we're gonna go with two, so
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: we get some folks getting some right answers. Steve had
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: a confident answer. I'm seeing a lot of eracing. Karin
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: is googling something I already gave up on this question.
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: Rick is also be racing. I'm not raising my answer.
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: You just are you just going from bonus points. Go
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: for bonus point, Steve, see how many you think you
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: can get. I'm not going to give you a little
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: bonus points. Does everybody have an answer? Who's going to
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: make an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: have Steve saying white, lake, palid, and shovel nose. We
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: have chess Are saying palaid white, and then we have
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: Phil and Korean without answers, Clay without an answer. We
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: have Rick saying northern and white, and then we have
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: Seth saying shovel nose and white. The nine species are
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: Atlantic golf, short nose, lake, shovel nose, pallid, Alabama green,
- 2:07:27Speaker 1: and white. So most everyone who answered, did get it.
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: I don't think Rick got no, I did not. Seth
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: Chester and Steve all got that one correct. Although many
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: of these species are considered threatened or endangered at state
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: and federal levels, the rarest of the nine is the
- 2:07:42Speaker 1: Alabama sturgeon. They are so rare, in fact, that one
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: hasn't been caught since two thousand seven. The only way
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: biologists even know that they exist is through the environmental
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: DNA tracking. This is where water samples are taken and
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: scanned for a targeted DNA sequence. In a study on
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: the Alabama River, seven team of one hundred samples taken
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: tested positive for Alabama sturgeon DNA, giving biologists proof that
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: there at least a few still around. Wow, that's unbelievable.
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: They did it similar in they only had like three
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: of fifty. No kid, Yeah, and they're picking up I
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: guess like the slime. Really interesting, man, So that they
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: just scrubbed a bunch of stuff from the endangered species
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: acting extinct. They finally took the ivory build the ivory
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: build woodpecker, even though reports still come in every year
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: first claiming its affiliated or however you want pilot, give
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: us a score update Phil, we have two questions left.
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: It's a barn burner. We have Steve, Chester and Clay
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: tied up in first place with four, Rick and myself
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: have three, and Seth and Curin have two. Al Right,
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: the ninth question the topic is upland this next question
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: comes to us. Be a Jeff Prender guest. If you
- 2:08:56Speaker 1: have a question you think is right for media to trivia,
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: Senate to trivia at the mediator dot com. Um. There
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: are four states where you can legally hunt the state bird.
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: Name one of them. Now, I need to put a
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: qualifier on this. Some states have a state bird and
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: a state game bird. I will not accept your answer
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: if it's a state where you can hunt the state
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: game bird. Here's an example. Massachusetts state bird is the
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: black capped chickene, which you cannot hunt. But they have
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: also designated a state game bird, which is the Eastern turkey.
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: That is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: a state where you can hunt the state bird, and
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: there are four of them. There's only four states, only
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: four states. Jeff sent this in and I fact checked him.
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: This is a phenomenal question. Great question. I don't think
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: I don't know that I have right, I have low confidence.
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: It's one of those ones. It's one of those questions
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: that you feel like you should know, and so it's
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: painful to not know. All right, go ahead and reveal
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying South Dakota, Chester saying
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: South Dakota, Krin saying Virginia, Clay saying South Dakota, Phil
- 2:10:11Speaker 1: saying South Dakota, Rick saying Pennsylvania. And he puts a
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: whole bunch of state there. I thought, and we have
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: list four of them, and we have set Pennsylvania. The
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: four states are, which this room did very well, Alaska, California, Pennsylvania,
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: and South Dakota, South Dakota. The Alaska state bird is
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: the willow ptarmigan. The California state bird is the California quail,
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: The Pennsylvania state bird is the rought grouse, and the
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: South Dakota state bird is the ring necked pheasant. Little
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: little advice for you there. If I was doing this okay,
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: I would have a way to build in that you
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: get bonus points for having more of them on there,
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: Like when I had that ship about sturgeons, or I
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: had a bunch of extras. But what if you have
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: those wrong, then it take it away just named all
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: fifty states. That's a good question. Yeah, no, no, no,
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: no, no no, no, I don't I don't know what to
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: do if you got it wrong? To you throw you're
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: throwing down hard. Yeah, you're throwing down hard. If you
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: put them down and you're wrong, wrong, you're wrong wrong.
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: But if but but if you, if you do it,
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: it should be good on you. But yeah, you can't
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: back out. You can't keeping this simple? All right? Do
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: we do? We have a chance for a time. What's
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: the score again? All right? So everyone got that except Carenzo, Steve, Seth,
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: and Clay. No, sorry, Steve, Steve, Chester and Clay are
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: tied for first with five and Rick and I have
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: alright on this last question, and I need everyone to
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: pay very close attention. Every detail matters in this question.
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: Are we ready? Chester and Seth are pitching jigs for
- 2:11:52Speaker 1: while I on the autumn equinox their boat bag if
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: a train going this way on the autumn equal nights Chester,
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: which I think they might have been Walleye Fish in September.
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: All right, the question again, Pay attention, pay attention. You
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: might It might even be helpful. To write stuff down
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: while we're going through this. This is very much like
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: the train traveling. I was hunting on the autumn equinox.
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: What I liked about is when they got shooting hours,
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: shooting hours like sunrise sunset. You guys were fishing with
- 2:12:36Speaker 1: Luke Combs on the but we did walleye fish with
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: Luke Combs the day after. All right, Chester and Seth
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: are pitching jigs for while I on the autumn equinox.
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: Their boat is headed directly towards the setting sun. Chester
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: gets mad at Seth because Seth keeps crossing Chester's line,
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: So Chester exclaims, damn it, Seth, cast your line out
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: the starboard side to the boat. To what direction should
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: Seth cast? All right? Like north southeast west direction cardinal direction. Correct.
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: Chester and Seth are pitching jigs for while I on
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: the autumn equinox. Their boat is headed directly towards the
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: setting sun. Chester gets mad at Seth because Seth keeps
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: crossing Chester's line. So Chester exclaims, damn it, Seth cast
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: your line out the starboard side of the boat to
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: what direction should Seth cast? Autumn equinox, they're heading directly
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: towards the setting sun. They couldn't be pointed straighter at
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: the setting sun. And Chester gets mad and he tells
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: Seth out the starboard side to what direction should Seth cast?
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? I wrong? Go ahead and
- 2:13:52Speaker 1: reveal your wrong. Steve says north. Chester says south, Karin
- 2:13:58Speaker 1: says north, Clay said is north, Phil says north, Rick
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: says south, and Seth says north. The correct answer is north.
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: There are only two days a year where the sun
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: actually sets exactly due west, the spring equinocks and fall equinox.
- 2:14:16Speaker 1: The front of the boat is the bow or forward.
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: The right side of the boat is starboard, the back
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: of the boat is a stern, and the left side
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: of the boat is the port. The easy way that
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: I was taught to remember this while working for the U. S.
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: Fish and Wildlife Service is that port has four letters
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: and leftest four letters. Oh I was just that? Was
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: I like that one spencer than you. People might have
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: a pain in the ask so they can't make a
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: little scratcherowski. That's right. So I'm gonna need to pull
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: up a tiebreaker, right, Yeah, you need a tiebreaker. Yeah.
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: Show down of the centry against Stephen Clay. Yeah, alright,
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: do you already have a tiebreaker written up? I do.
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: As a reminder, the first time we played, we went
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: into a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker question will be numerical, So
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: whoever is closest or right on the nuts, if you
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: got it, will be declared the winner and get to
- 2:15:11Speaker 1: choose where the hundred dollars is donated. You can all
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: play along, but the only answers that matter are from
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: Steve and Clay. Are you ready? And Clay, remember isn't
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: being supervised right now? Entire research library at his fingertips hands.
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: He's got his kids. They're like working their on computers.
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: They've got encyclopedias out and stuff. That's right, So here
- 2:15:40Speaker 1: we go for all the marbles. What is the average
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: salary of a game? Warden in oh? Y'all can play along,
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: but Clay and Steve are the only ones who are
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: going for the win, So this is gonna be the
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: closest closest to the correct answer will be declared the winner.
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: A getting the question what was the average salary? That's
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: going to change your answers pre cod pre coviden, what
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: was the average sald There's not like going closest. These
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: are not prices right rules prices right is so pretentious,
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: going no, I don't, I don't, I don't know. It
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: doesn't matter what. Yeah, I see Clay, do you in math?
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: He's like figuring out. He's like, well, here's what they
- 2:16:28Speaker 1: make an arkans typing stuff. Now he's explaining to the kids, Clay,
- 2:16:35Speaker 1: do you have an answer? Okay, go ahead and reveal
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying forty thou and we
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: have Clay saying what do you have? I'll tell you
- 2:16:51Speaker 1: the other answers in the room. We have Chester saying
- 2:16:53Speaker 1: forty thousand, Rick saying and saying forty three thousand. You
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: guys are all like in the ballpark, the correct answers. Kids,
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: A right man, the the ie. Look what I wrote,
- 2:17:22Speaker 1: scratched it the l you know what, Okay, I'll tell
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: you how I got that answer. I remember one time
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: I was interviewing uh Arkansas game and Phish biologists and
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: my dad always told me not to work for the
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: government because you wouldn't make very much money, like literally,
- 2:17:41Speaker 1: because I wanted to be a game warden at one time,
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: and he was like, nah, you probably only make forty thousand.
- 2:17:47Speaker 1: I referenced that to a gaming Phish employee who looked
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: at me and said, well, we don't we make a
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: little more than that, And so yep, he stayed with
- 2:17:59Speaker 1: the west average game Morden salaries North Carolina, which is
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: forty thousand. Stay with you. Stay with the highest average
- 2:18:07Speaker 1: game mordan salary is Illinois at eight thousand. To go
- 2:18:11Speaker 1: work in Illinois. What a discrepancy man, because nobody wants
- 2:18:15Speaker 1: to live in Illinois. Sorry, I think I said the
- 2:18:20Speaker 1: average it's fifty eight, doesn't change, doesn't change who the
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: money goes to. Yeah, who are you going to? Hey,
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: I'd like to give it to the Western Bear Foundation. Yeah,
- 2:18:33Speaker 1: my friend Joe con Dallas out in uht in, Wyoming,
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: Western Bear Foundation. Good guys, well done, Clay. Yeah again,
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: you need to go enter for this gameaway that starts
- 2:18:54Speaker 1: on October eighteenth, to come play with the crew. Also
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: gonna win a bunch of swag. And then if you
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: have a question you think is good, right into trivia
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: at the Meat Eater dot com. And while you're in there,
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: uh sniffing around and entering to win a chance to
- 2:19:05Speaker 1: come play trivia with us and make a couple of
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: bids on the old auction house of Oodities and the
- 2:19:11Speaker 1: money will go into supporting our land Access Initiative where
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: we do projects to increase and enhance you're hunting and
- 2:19:19Speaker 1: fishing opportunities. Bye Clary
