- 0:13Speaker 1: $ 150 in lineups instantly. You'll notice there's somebody else on
- 0:17Speaker 1: the screen with me. I am joined by... Former Gator player,
- 0:23Speaker 1: national champion, Eric Wilber. Also happen to be married to him.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You're actually looking at what's going on in my kitchen
- 0:29Speaker 1: over there. Eric, thanks for hopping on with me. We've
- 0:32Speaker 1: been talking all weekend kind of on and off about
- 0:35Speaker 1: what we're going to talk about now. And I feel
- 0:37Speaker 1: like it's something that our viewers would really be intrigued by.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You know, we watched Florida get just demolished by Missouri yesterday.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And You know, first of all, before we get into
- 0:49Speaker 1: any comparisons, what as a former player jumped out to you?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Was it, you know, the way that they got beat
- 0:55Speaker 1: physically or mentally or was there some sort of lack
- 0:59Speaker 1: of preparation or was it just kind of a combination
- 1:01Speaker 1: of all of those things?
- 1:03Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, it's typically a combination. The biggest thing
- 1:06Speaker 2: that jumps out is just how we got destroyed in
- 1:08Speaker 2: the trenches on both sides of the ball. O-line was
- 1:11Speaker 2: getting beat left and right, no matter what we were
- 1:13Speaker 2: trying to do. D-line wasn't getting the pressure that we
- 1:16Speaker 2: were used to getting, which I've been saying for weeks,
- 1:18Speaker 2: that's going to be our biggest weakness on defense, is
- 1:21Speaker 2: our defense can kind of hold them if our D-line
- 1:23Speaker 2: is able to get pressure. If we're not able to
- 1:25Speaker 2: get pressure, our DBs are not in a position to
- 1:27Speaker 2: cover people over a longer period of time. So it
- 1:31Speaker 2: eventually happens. So we got to figure that part out.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Florida looks like a completely different football team from the
- 1:38Speaker 1: one we watched a week ago that dominated Ole Miss.
- 1:41Speaker 1: As a player, how does a team go from playing
- 1:44Speaker 1: that well one Saturday to looking so flat the next?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, you buy into the hype a little bit. Obviously,
- 1:50Speaker 2: coaches do everything they can to make sure that players
- 1:52Speaker 2: don't do that. But with social media and everything like that,
- 1:54Speaker 2: I mean, what are you going to do? You can't
- 1:55Speaker 2: take their phones. They're going to be out in the world.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So they start to get a little bit complacent, but
- 2:01Speaker 2: also they don't realize the level of preparation that other
- 2:05Speaker 2: teams are going to start putting on them. So Florida,
- 2:08Speaker 2: because we've had some rough few years, teams aren't putting
- 2:14Speaker 2: their full effort into us. No matter what coaches say,
- 2:17Speaker 2: people start to look past us, and we're not getting
- 2:19Speaker 2: that anymore. Now that we're on the rise, we're showing
- 2:21Speaker 2: what we're capable of, and we're getting everyone's full effort again.
- 2:25Speaker 1: You were on Urban's first Florida team in 2005, and
- 2:29Speaker 1: you guys went to Alabama. You got beaten 31-3. This
- 2:33Speaker 1: is ingrained in my brain because you shot me a
- 2:36Speaker 1: text message when the team plane landed, and you said,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I don't want to see anybody, and that includes you.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Watching yesterday, did anything about this Missouri loss remind you
- 2:47Speaker 1: of that afternoon game in Tuscaloosa?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, a little bit. But first off, I'm sure I
- 2:51Speaker 2: put a smiley face in there somewhere. So, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 2: take that with a grain of salt. Yeah, it did.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Getting punched in the mouth, it hurts. And how you
- 3:00Speaker 2: respond to it, the reflection that you need from a
- 3:02Speaker 2: player standpoint, you know, people are going to respond different
- 3:05Speaker 2: ways to that. And our team, there's a lot of
- 3:08Speaker 2: guys that got really pissed off and there's a lot
- 3:10Speaker 2: of guys that just needed some time to kind of
- 3:11Speaker 2: reflect on what was happening, how it happened, what we
- 3:14Speaker 2: need to do, you know, to fix that. I will
- 3:18Speaker 2: tell you, there was no time as a player under
- 3:23Speaker 2: Meyer that any of the players were looking at the
- 3:25Speaker 2: coaches saying, what should you have done better? It was
- 3:28Speaker 2: always an internal reflection on what we should have done better.
- 3:31Speaker 2: What did we not do? There was no finger pointing.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It was everyone taking the accountability that they needed to take,
- 3:37Speaker 2: which listening to Summerall's press conference, it seems like that's
- 3:40Speaker 2: kind of the approach that they're taking as well. There
- 3:42Speaker 2: is no finger pointing there. Um, you know, some people
- 3:45Speaker 2: do need to get called out, but you know, it's
- 3:48Speaker 2: everyone sees on the film who it is and who
- 3:51Speaker 2: needs the extra work.
- 3:53Speaker 1: You mentioned that that was really the first time that
- 3:55Speaker 1: you guys got punched in the mouth and that Alabama game,
- 3:59Speaker 1: what did that game expose about your team at that
- 4:02Speaker 1: point in the season?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Uh, that's a good question. I, that we, we weren't
- 4:11Speaker 2: living up to the standards that we could live up to.
- 4:14Speaker 2: We thought we were. Hey, we're on the rise. We're
- 4:16Speaker 2: doing the right things. But we could be better. We
- 4:20Speaker 2: need to be better. We have to be better. We
- 4:22Speaker 2: can't get complacent. We can't go in thinking, oh, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: it's okay. We'll just come out with a W and
- 4:27Speaker 2: just kind of move on from there. We have to
- 4:29Speaker 2: prepare every single week knowing that we're going to get
- 4:32Speaker 2: everyone's best from then on. So the preparation going into it,
- 4:38Speaker 2: the focus going into it, the I mean, we kind
- 4:42Speaker 2: of had a schedule of what nights you would go
- 4:45Speaker 2: out and stuff like that, when you could hang out,
- 4:47Speaker 2: when you could stay out late and stuff like that.
- 4:49Speaker 2: All of that got completely revamped internally from a player's standpoint.
- 4:52Speaker 2: How we prepared for the entire week moving forward from there,
- 4:57Speaker 2: we kind of realized, hey, this is not what we want.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We do not want a four loss season to be
- 5:04Speaker 2: our norm. We know we can do better.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Coach Summerall talks a lot about player-led teams, and he
- 5:11Speaker 1: always says that the difference between being good and being
- 5:13Speaker 1: great is having players who police the locker room. After
- 5:17Speaker 1: a loss like Missouri, how important are those player leaders
- 5:21Speaker 1: compared to anything that the coaching staff would say?
- 5:25Speaker 2: It's really important, but it also depends on the type
- 5:28Speaker 2: of leaders that they are. So I tell this, I
- 5:30Speaker 2: coach as well, and I tell kids all the time,
- 5:32Speaker 2: there's vocal leaders and there's lead by example. And I
- 5:35Speaker 2: always ask the kids as a group, I'm like, who
- 5:38Speaker 2: thinks they're the vocal leaders on the team? And we'll
- 5:41Speaker 2: have five, six, seven kids raise their hands. And I'll say, okay,
- 5:45Speaker 2: of you, which ones are lead by example? And we'll
- 5:48Speaker 2: have like two or three kids raise their hand. And
- 5:50Speaker 2: I tell them, you can't be a vocal leader if
- 5:53Speaker 2: you're not leading by example. You have to lead by
- 5:55Speaker 2: example first. You can be a lead by example and
- 5:58Speaker 2: not a vocal leader. That's what Chris Leak was. He
- 6:01Speaker 2: was not the big, boisterous, rah-rah type guy, but he
- 6:04Speaker 2: led by example. He worked his butt off. He did
- 6:06Speaker 2: what he needed to do. Then you got the Tim Tebow.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He led by example and was the vocal leader. So
- 6:11Speaker 2: you got the best of those. You cannot have someone
- 6:14Speaker 2: who is a lead by example or a vocal leader
- 6:16Speaker 2: and not lead by example. Then they're a hypocrite. Then
- 6:19Speaker 2: there starts to become animosity in the locker room. So
- 6:21Speaker 2: it depends on the type of leader that you have
- 6:24Speaker 2: and how they're trying to get the best out of
- 6:26Speaker 2: the players.
- 6:27Speaker 1: When you guys lost at Alabama, who were the players
- 6:30Speaker 1: that stepped forward and what did leadership actually look like
- 6:33Speaker 1: during the next week of practice?
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'll be honest with you, I kind of removed myself
- 6:38Speaker 2: from that. Being the punter, I can kind of isolate
- 6:41Speaker 2: myself for what I need to do and take a
- 6:43Speaker 2: focus on my position and not get bigger than I
- 6:46Speaker 2: need to be. It didn't matter for me to perform
- 6:51Speaker 2: what was going on with everyone else. So I just
- 6:54Speaker 2: very much took a step back and it was a
- 6:56Speaker 2: lot of self-reflection on, am I doing my job to
- 6:59Speaker 2: the best of my ability? And if I am doing that,
- 7:02Speaker 2: is there anyone I can then help do their job
- 7:04Speaker 2: to the best of their ability? And being a punter,
- 7:06Speaker 2: it's very difficult to kind of cross that over. So
- 7:09Speaker 2: my standpoint, I was much more internal reflection on that.
- 7:14Speaker 2: But it's, I mean, you got the standard guys. You
- 7:17Speaker 2: got the Dallas Baker. You got, I mean, Dallas, always
- 7:20Speaker 2: a great guy, very vocal leader, very positive, which I
- 7:23Speaker 2: loved about Dallas. And there was not, from what I
- 7:28Speaker 2: can remember... There was not a lot of you screwed up,
- 7:32Speaker 2: you need to fix this. There was a lot of
- 7:34Speaker 2: we know we can do better. It was a lot
- 7:36Speaker 2: of leading by reminders, leading of what we know we
- 7:40Speaker 2: can do, not leading by finger pointing.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Florida came into Missouri coming off a huge emotional win.
- 7:46Speaker 1: They'd climbed into the top 10, and suddenly everybody on
- 7:49Speaker 1: every show everywhere was talking about them as a legitimate
- 7:52Speaker 1: playoff contender. Can Young's team start believing the praise before
- 7:57Speaker 1: they've really earned it?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you can start believing it, but it doesn't
- 8:01Speaker 2: mean it's going to be true. So that's where games
- 8:06Speaker 2: like this, I think... end up helping in the long run,
- 8:10Speaker 2: is the younger guys that know what they're capable of
- 8:14Speaker 2: start to realize what it takes. The older guys, even
- 8:17Speaker 2: though they're like, hey, you know, I may be a
- 8:19Speaker 2: senior or this is my last season, whatever it is,
- 8:23Speaker 2: they can start instilling that leadership effort to the younger
- 8:27Speaker 2: guys to make sure they can carry on through that.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I've said, This year has been phenomenal so far based
- 8:33Speaker 2: on what everyone's expectations were going into this season for
- 8:37Speaker 2: what we've done and how we've performed. I've been saying
- 8:40Speaker 2: to everyone who said the Gators are looking good that
- 8:43Speaker 2: next year is going to be the year. This year,
- 8:45Speaker 2: if things continue in this direction, it's a bonus. It's
- 8:48Speaker 2: very much a learning year for everyone. Next year is
- 8:51Speaker 2: the year that makes the big difference.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Would you call yesterday... a maturity test that Florida failed?
- 8:58Speaker 3: And if so, is that.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Something you can fix during the season or does a
- 9:01Speaker 1: team either have maturity.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Or it doesn't? No, teams can definitely mature throughout the season.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Teams develop throughout the season. Coaches develop throughout the season.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think this is something that from a player standpoint,
- 9:13Speaker 2: you're going to see a lot, but I think you're
- 9:14Speaker 2: going to see a lot from the coach's standpoint as
- 9:17Speaker 2: well on the how they prepare, how they play, what
- 9:22Speaker 2: adjustments need to be made, what adjustments need to be
- 9:25Speaker 2: made during the week, not necessarily in-game adjustments, but how
- 9:29Speaker 2: do we prepare for the actual talent level we're going
- 9:34Speaker 2: up against and the schemes that we're going up against
- 9:36Speaker 2: that seems like we were kind of like, hey, we're
- 9:38Speaker 2: kind of bulldozing people doing what we do right now,
- 9:40Speaker 2: which is great. You can't do that. You got to
- 9:42Speaker 2: make adjustments throughout the week and take advantages where an
- 9:45Speaker 2: advantage is there.
- 9:47Speaker 1: One thing that bothered me yesterday was how Missouri seemed
- 9:50Speaker 1: to become more physical as the game went along. Florida's
- 9:53Speaker 1: offensive line coach is you know your former teammate Phil
- 9:57Speaker 1: Troutwine and I know he's going to be you know
- 9:59Speaker 1: on these guys this week but when you watched Florida
- 10:03Speaker 1: lose control at the line of scrimmage like they did
- 10:05Speaker 1: what are you looking at is it technique is it
- 10:07Speaker 1: effort is it communication is it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Attitude I'll tell you right now, I would hate to
- 10:13Speaker 2: be in that meeting room. I'd hate to be in
- 10:14Speaker 2: any of those meeting rooms, come today and tomorrow. That's
- 10:18Speaker 2: one of those, you walk in, you know you made mistakes,
- 10:21Speaker 2: you know you're going to get called out for it,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but you just got to eat it, you got to
- 10:25Speaker 2: own it. So as far as, yes, the physicality, Missouri
- 10:32Speaker 2: fed off of it and got better throughout the night,
- 10:35Speaker 2: it seemed like, and Florida kind of died down a
- 10:37Speaker 2: little bit. that's the part that the player-led needs to
- 10:42Speaker 2: step up. The coaches can only do so much to
- 10:44Speaker 2: get you fired up during the game. What really frustrated me,
- 10:47Speaker 2: and it was very unfortunate, the D-lineman at the one
- 10:49Speaker 2: point where he got called for delay a game for clapping.
- 10:52Speaker 2: he wasn't clapping, trying to simulate a snap. He was
- 10:55Speaker 2: trying to get his other teammates hyped up and get
- 10:57Speaker 2: them going. And then we just get smacked down because
- 11:00Speaker 2: of it. So obviously a learning experience for how you
- 11:03Speaker 2: can motivate your teammates while you're standing at the line
- 11:05Speaker 2: of scrimmage. But I can't remember who it was, but
- 11:08Speaker 2: that's something that that's what you want to see is
- 11:10Speaker 2: you want to see people get fired up and start
- 11:14Speaker 2: to push the other guys. Hey guys, we know we
- 11:16Speaker 2: can do better. If you, if we're man on man,
- 11:18Speaker 2: our guys are better than their guys, right? hopefully. I
- 11:22Speaker 2: will tell you that going into the season, I remember
- 11:24Speaker 2: I was at a scrimmage and walked by Trout Line
- 11:27Speaker 2: and I was like, hey man, O-Line's looking good. And
- 11:29Speaker 2: he looked me dead in the eye. He goes, we're
- 11:31Speaker 2: better than we were. We're nowhere near good. And I
- 11:34Speaker 2: was like, Okay, so that's the standard that we are
- 11:37Speaker 2: trying to live up to. He knows what it takes
- 11:40Speaker 2: to be a top 10 program, a top 10 O-line.
- 11:43Speaker 2: He knows we're not there yet. He has developed these
- 11:47Speaker 2: guys and brought some guys in to make us much
- 11:49Speaker 2: better than we were, but we still have a ways
- 11:52Speaker 2: to go to be a top-notch O-line, and he knows that.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So now from a coach's standpoint, knowing that and knowing
- 11:58Speaker 2: that the D-linemen you're going against are you're going to
- 12:02Speaker 2: be getting their absolute best effort. How can we put
- 12:04Speaker 2: our guys in a position to win? We may not
- 12:07Speaker 2: have it to where our jimmies are better than their joes.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Knowing that, what adjustments are being made from an O-line standpoint,
- 12:14Speaker 2: from a play-calling standpoint, to put your guys in better positions?
- 12:17Speaker 2: Are we going to start getting the ball out wide faster?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Are we going to start doing some roll-out passes? Um, we,
- 12:23Speaker 2: the runs are, I mean, we're getting stuffed right up
- 12:25Speaker 2: the middle, you know, the pockets kind of collapsing on us.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So we got to do something to start getting the
- 12:30Speaker 2: ball in the playmakers hands and let them go try
- 12:32Speaker 2: and make plays.
- 12:34Speaker 1: When a game starts to snowball, like it did yesterday, we,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you know, talked about the penalties, missed assignments, big runs.
- 12:41Speaker 3: The offense was overall was struggling.
- 12:43Speaker 1: How difficult is it as a coach to stop everybody
- 12:47Speaker 1: from trying to make one huge play instead of just
- 12:50Speaker 1: simply doing their job?
- 12:52Speaker 2: It's real difficult, but you've got to instill in the players,
- 12:55Speaker 2: just win this play. Break it down into mini battles.
- 12:59Speaker 2: The game is the war. Each play is a battle.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Just win this play. Do your job this play, and
- 13:05Speaker 2: that's all that matters. You'll see those start to snowball
- 13:09Speaker 2: in your favor if you can do that, as opposed to, oh, crap,
- 13:13Speaker 2: they just ran it 80 yards on us. Now what? Oh, crap,
- 13:16Speaker 2: we're down 30 points. Now what? All your focus is
- 13:19Speaker 2: short-term focus. Win this play is all that matters.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Is that, do you think where urban developed that four
- 13:25Speaker 1: to six seconds of relentless effort?
- 13:28Speaker 2: Uh, probably, um, that, and that, that mindset of I
- 13:33Speaker 2: can go as hard as I can for four to
- 13:35Speaker 2: six seconds, right? Once you start looking past that, then
- 13:39Speaker 2: it starts getting a little daunting. That's like, Hey, if
- 13:42Speaker 2: I have you go run sprints for four to six seconds,
- 13:45Speaker 2: and that equals a mile, are you going to look
- 13:47Speaker 2: at that better or worse than, Hey, go run a mile?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Most people. Yeah. Right. So let me break it down
- 13:54Speaker 2: into small, easy to easy bites. And I know no matter.
- 13:59Speaker 2: No matter how tired I am, I can give 100%
- 14:02Speaker 2: of what I have for four to six seconds. It's
- 14:05Speaker 2: difficult for me to give 100% of what I have
- 14:08Speaker 2: for a longer duration. So just putting those small bites
- 14:11Speaker 2: together and instilling that throughout the game, just, hey, win
- 14:15Speaker 2: this play, win this play. Can you take 30 steps
- 14:18Speaker 2: as hard as you can and then you get a break? Sure,
- 14:20Speaker 2: I can do that. Just trying to break it down
- 14:23Speaker 2: like that I think really helps the players focus on
- 14:26Speaker 2: on not getting caught up in the big picture of, hey,
- 14:29Speaker 2: we're getting our ass beat. It's, hey, I'm going to
- 14:31Speaker 2: go win this play right here.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I got a couple more questions for you, Eric.
- 14:35Speaker 1: But before we go on, I do want to tell
- 14:36Speaker 1: all of our audience, we are now available on Apple
- 14:39Speaker 1: Podcasts and Spotify.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I've gotten messages.
- 14:42Speaker 1: For over a year asking for audio options for the show.
- 14:45Speaker 1: So now we have that. So guys, do me a favor,
- 14:47Speaker 1: go subscribe over there. It's going to make it easier
- 14:50Speaker 1: for you to, you know, listen at work. or stack
- 14:53Speaker 1: a whole bunch of shows together as you drive into
- 14:55Speaker 1: Gainesville on game day. So go ahead and check that
- 14:58Speaker 1: out over there. And if there is an audio platform
- 15:00Speaker 1: that we should be on that we're not, go ahead
- 15:02Speaker 1: and put that down in the comments too, and I'll
- 15:03Speaker 1: see what I can make happen.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Okay, so Eric, here's a big comparison for me.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Florida got embarrassed at Alabama in 2005, but that loss
- 15:12Speaker 1: didn't define what Urban ultimately built. How do you know
- 15:16Speaker 1: whether a loss is simply, you know, maybe a really
- 15:18Speaker 1: painful step in building a program versus a warning sign
- 15:23Speaker 1: of bigger problems.
- 15:26Speaker 2: To be honest, you won't know until two or three
- 15:27Speaker 2: weeks down the road how they respond to that loss,
- 15:31Speaker 2: what they're saying in the locker room, what they're saying
- 15:33Speaker 2: to the media. That's when you're really going to know
- 15:37Speaker 2: if they actually learned from it or if they're just
- 15:40Speaker 2: accepting it and accepting mediocrity. I wish I could tell
- 15:43Speaker 2: you right now, hey, this is what I'm seeing, this
- 15:46Speaker 2: is how this team's going to do, but we're not
- 15:48Speaker 2: going to know that for a couple more weeks.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Did that 2005 loss change Urban at all? Did you
- 15:54Speaker 1: notice anything different afterwards in the way that he coached
- 15:57Speaker 1: or practiced or how he challenged the room?
- 16:01Speaker 2: Honestly, not really. He did a lot of internal reflecting,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and this is very well documented as well, for being
- 16:10Speaker 2: able to coach to the talent that he has. That's
- 16:12Speaker 2: when he involved Latsko. Yeah, put his players in the
- 16:15Speaker 2: best position to win, not put his players in the
- 16:18Speaker 2: best position to fit the scheme that he wants. And
- 16:21Speaker 2: I think that's what great coaches have to do. And
- 16:24Speaker 2: I think that our coaching staff, that's what they're going
- 16:26Speaker 2: to have to do is do a little internal reflecting on,
- 16:29Speaker 2: are we trying to force, you know, round pegs in
- 16:31Speaker 2: the square holes or are we going to, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 2: start adapting the hole that we're trying to fit them
- 16:36Speaker 2: into and make sure we can come out on top.
- 16:38Speaker 2: So that's where I think from a coaching standpoint, I
- 16:42Speaker 2: think the motivational aspect, I think, All of that, Summerall
- 16:46Speaker 2: has what it takes. I think this coaching staff has
- 16:48Speaker 2: what it takes there. There's going to be some internal
- 16:51Speaker 2: reflecting on how we're best utilizing the guys to take
- 16:55Speaker 2: advantage of the team we're going against.
- 16:58Speaker 1: If you were in Florida's locker room today, what would
- 17:02Speaker 1: you want to hear from Coach Summerall? And maybe even
- 17:04Speaker 1: more importantly, what would you want to hear from the
- 17:06Speaker 1: players themselves?
- 17:10Speaker 2: From the players, it needs to be a lot of
- 17:12Speaker 2: positive call-out. Right. Everyone made mistakes during this game. Everyone
- 17:17Speaker 2: needs to own those mistakes. And good leaders lead a
- 17:21Speaker 2: lot through reminders, not necessarily demands. So what kind of
- 17:26Speaker 2: language are they using to get the best out of
- 17:29Speaker 2: people from the coaching staff? I think one thing Meyer
- 17:32Speaker 2: was really good at was. figuring out how the players
- 17:36Speaker 2: ticked and how they were motivated because you can have
- 17:39Speaker 2: two of the best athletes in the world right next
- 17:42Speaker 2: to you that are motivated different ways. Some of them,
- 17:44Speaker 2: you challenge them and they're going to say, you know,
- 17:47Speaker 2: you challenged me. I'll screw that. Watch this. And they'll
- 17:49Speaker 2: step up to the challenge. Others you challenge them and
- 17:52Speaker 2: they'll curl up, curl up in the corner and cry
- 17:54Speaker 2: for three days, but that doesn't do anyone any good. Right? So,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and I've seen both, both are phenomenal athletes and, But
- 18:01Speaker 2: how do you motivate both of them to get the
- 18:03Speaker 2: best out of them? And it's very difficult to do
- 18:05Speaker 2: that with a large number of people. So that's one
- 18:08Speaker 2: thing that I'm interested to see how Summerall does that
- 18:12Speaker 2: with different personalities, with different players responding different ways, and
- 18:16Speaker 2: how the team does that as well, right? I'm very
- 18:19Speaker 2: much a, if you challenge me, I'm gonna step up
- 18:20Speaker 2: to the challenge. So that's also how I think people
- 18:23Speaker 2: will respond. So if I do that to someone that's
- 18:26Speaker 2: a curl up and cry person, Well, that didn't do
- 18:29Speaker 2: the team any good. Right. So you got to figure
- 18:31Speaker 2: out how that works and who you can motivate.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So if someone's a curl up and cry person, which like,
- 18:37Speaker 1: I know you're not meaning that as a negative, even
- 18:39Speaker 1: though I like feel like that's a negative, but if
- 18:40Speaker 1: you're someone that's motivated better by positive reinforcement, as opposed
- 18:44Speaker 1: to a negative challenge, you're not good. Okay. Maybe I'm
- 18:48Speaker 1: not good is the way that you, but you're, you,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you're capable of being better and that's, they receive that better.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So it's more so, um, if I call
- 19:00Speaker 2: you out, I'm trying to think of how to say this.
- 19:02Speaker 2: I had it in my head. Um, I don't know.
- 19:06Speaker 2: If I call you out, are you going to say,
- 19:08Speaker 2: or I say, man, that was a shit play. What
- 19:11Speaker 2: are you doing? Are you going to be like, yeah,
- 19:12Speaker 2: that was a shit play. Maybe I'm not that good.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Or are you going to be like, that was a
- 19:15Speaker 2: shit play. Watch this. Let me show you. Which one
- 19:18Speaker 2: are you going to be? And that's the hard part
- 19:21Speaker 2: of trying to figure out how that works. So you,
- 19:24Speaker 2: as the leaders on the team, One, there's multiple leaders
- 19:30Speaker 2: that are going to lead in different ways. I don't
- 19:32Speaker 2: know all of them personally, so I can't tell you
- 19:34Speaker 2: how they're going to do it. Philo, I feel like,
- 19:37Speaker 2: is not that I'm going to call you out and
- 19:39Speaker 2: challenge you type person. He seems more like that, hey,
- 19:42Speaker 2: I'm going to motivate you and give you some positive
- 19:44Speaker 2: reinforcement type person. But you need the other guy that's
- 19:46Speaker 2: going to call people out. I don't know if that's
- 19:48Speaker 2: Jaden Ball. I don't know if it's VB3. I don't
- 19:49Speaker 2: know who that is but you need both of those
- 19:53Speaker 2: people that's why it's not just one leader and you
- 19:56Speaker 2: never have just one type of leader you have a
- 19:58Speaker 2: leader group right you have your captains and they're going
- 20:01Speaker 2: to have different personalities and you got to kind of
- 20:04Speaker 2: feed off of each other on that and make sure
- 20:06Speaker 2: the right ones are leading the right way.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You've been on a Florida team that took a loss
- 20:11Speaker 1: early that was ugly in a new coach's tenure and
- 20:14Speaker 1: eventually became a national championship program. After what you saw yesterday,
- 20:19Speaker 1: do you still believe this Florida team is headed.
- 20:22Speaker 3: In the right direction? And what do you need to
- 20:24Speaker 3: see next to believe.
- 20:26Speaker 1: That Missouri was maybe an aberration rather than a sign
- 20:30Speaker 1: of some kind of bigger issues?
- 20:32Speaker 2: So, yeah, I think they're heading in the right direction.
- 20:34Speaker 2: There was a couple plays that I saw to where
- 20:36Speaker 2: someone got beat And they gave up on the play.
- 20:39Speaker 2: those are the things that need to be fixed immediately,
- 20:42Speaker 2: or that player needs to be gone. Those are things
- 20:44Speaker 2: that you can't have, right? You're going to get beat.
- 20:47Speaker 2: You're going to lose a play, right? How you respond
- 20:49Speaker 2: to that in the play and the next place to
- 20:52Speaker 2: come really determines on the trajectory of this team. And
- 20:55Speaker 2: if we have players giving up halfway through the play,
- 20:57Speaker 2: cause they got beat that, that part has to be
- 21:00Speaker 2: fixed immediately from the player's standpoint and the coach's standpoint.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So if we start to see those things get fixed, I, yes,
- 21:07Speaker 2: I think we're on the right path. We're hitting the
- 21:08Speaker 2: right trajectory. We are in a better position right now
- 21:13Speaker 2: than anyone thought we would be in coming into this season. Right.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So that is the positive. The negative is we see
- 21:20Speaker 2: what we're capable of and we have to live up
- 21:23Speaker 2: to that now. Right. The standard has been raised a
- 21:25Speaker 2: little bit. So can we continue to go in that
- 21:29Speaker 2: direction and meet the new standards that are being set?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Seems a little bit like a good problem to have, though,
- 21:34Speaker 1: like that this this coaching staff is moving things in
- 21:37Speaker 1: the right direction.
- 21:37Speaker 3: You're still all in on them.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. I think they're doing great. I have no
- 21:43Speaker 2: issues for kind of how they're doing things, especially in
- 21:46Speaker 2: the locker room and the weight room. The the the
- 21:49Speaker 2: behind the scenes, the play calling, the adjustments, stuff like that.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I leave that up to them. Obviously, everyone thinks Buster
- 21:55Speaker 2: Faulkner is a genius to the offense. So are we
- 21:59Speaker 2: going to see him make the adjustments that are necessary,
- 22:01Speaker 2: knowing we just got our asses handed to us? um,
- 22:05Speaker 2: by not being physical. So we are either a need
- 22:07Speaker 2: to step up our physicality, which do we have the
- 22:09Speaker 2: guys to do that? And if we don't, we'd be
- 22:12Speaker 2: need to make the adjustments that our guys don't have
- 22:14Speaker 2: to be as physical, but we still put them in
- 22:16Speaker 2: a position to win the play.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Did you know, um, in the moment during that Alabama
- 22:22Speaker 1: loss that this was going to help the team grow,
- 22:24Speaker 1: or is that something that you recognize really only years.
- 22:27Speaker 3: After the fact?
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that was definitely looking back years afterwards that you
- 22:32Speaker 2: could see, hey, this was a big turning point. In
- 22:34Speaker 2: the moment, we were very much, shit, are we the
- 22:38Speaker 2: team that we were last year? Are we the team
- 22:41Speaker 2: that got Ron Zook fired? And that's kind of what
- 22:44Speaker 2: we were trying to figure out. And that's where the
- 22:47Speaker 2: leadership of the team came in. And, you know, no,
- 22:50Speaker 2: we're not that team. We're not those guys. We know
- 22:53Speaker 2: what we're capable of. We know what we've been pushed through.
- 22:56Speaker 2: We know what the off seasons were like. We know
- 22:58Speaker 2: these guys aren't going through that. We know it was blood,
- 23:01Speaker 2: sweat and tears together. And very much it was it
- 23:05Speaker 2: it was kind of, hey, are we not as good
- 23:09Speaker 2: as we think? Kind of, you know, doom and gloom
- 23:13Speaker 2: for a minute there. But then there was the realization of, oh,
- 23:17Speaker 2: hell no, that's not us. We can fix this. We
- 23:20Speaker 2: know what we're doing. But it wasn't until later that
- 23:22Speaker 2: you looked back and saw that that was a pivotal
- 23:25Speaker 2: point for that happening for that team.
