- 0:20SPEAKER_00: For more, you can visit us at dailywriterlife.com.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Anyone who grew up in the second half of the 20th century was familiar with two icons of pop culture, The Wizard of Oz and Mr.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Rogers' Neighborhood.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: On the surface, these two things couldn't possibly have been more different.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 movie about a young girl, Dorothy, who is swept away by a tornado and battles the Wicked Witch of the West in the land of Oz.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Mr.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Rogers' Neighborhood, on the other hand, was a PBS show that taught kids how to cope with life and use their imaginations.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: These two worlds converged one day in 1975 when Margaret Hamilton made a guest appearance on Mr.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Rogers.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: As the Wicked Witch, she had scared generations of kids, but she was also a fan of Mr.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Rogers and enjoyed watching it with her grandchildren.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Margaret Hamilton appeared on an episode where Fred Rogers was teaching children not to be afraid of things that seem scary.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: They had her dress up in a costume similar to The Wicked Witch to show kids that it was all make-believe.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Well, that's not just a lesson for kids, but a great lesson for all ages, including writers.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: We let fear hold us back from so much.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: What will people think if I start a blog?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: What if nobody likes my book?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: What will the people I went to high school with think about my new identity as a writer?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: What if somebody leaves me a bad review?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Well, can all those things happen?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: But will they hurt you?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: The vast majority of our fears about writing and creativity have no basis in reality.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: They're just figments of our imaginations.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: In fact, the master of horror writing himself, Stephen King, once said, I'm convinced that fear is at the root of most bad writing.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Whether it's fear of failure, fear of other people's opinions, or fear of the blank page, none of it is real.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: So the next time you're distracted by that shadowy figure in the corner and you're feeling afraid or apprehensive about your writing, remember that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
