Transcript
- 0:15Hello and welcome to Arguing Ever After.
- 0:18I'm Luke and this is my wife Amber, who amazes me to this
- 0:22very day. Hello.
- 0:25Together we are the Lord and Lady who lock horns.
- 0:28The count and Countess of contention.
- 0:30The Duke and Duchess of Disagreement.
- 0:32And the king and queen of quarrels.
- 0:35We have been together since we both had pagers and we used
- 0:39payphones to call each other back.
- 0:41We have argued about practically everything and yet we are still
- 0:44together and happy. In this entertainment only
- 0:48podcast, we will bicker about all things big and small and the
- 0:51audience gets the final say on who the winner is.
- 0:55We don't claim to be relationship experts by any
- 0:58means. We will debate lots of things,
- 1:00many of which are frequently submitted by our listeners.
- 1:04So if you have a topic you want us non professionals to battle
- 1:07over before you try it at home, please share it with us at
- 1:10arguingeverafter@gmail.com. Perhaps this completely
- 1:14unscientific method of letting the masses decide on who the
- 1:19winner is can settle your fight before you even have it.
- 1:24And so here we are, at our very 6th episode.
- 1:28Number six, I'm going to run out of fingers at some point.
- 1:32I hope not. I mean, let's keep the 10 you
- 1:34have. I'll try, but we'll have to use.
- 1:37We have together. We can go up to like 20.
- 1:40So. If we get to our 21st episode,
- 1:42we'll have to bring out toes. We use symbols.
- 1:45Oh, toes. We're not.
- 1:46We're not. No, sorry, no toes for you.
- 1:48No, not happening. I guess too far.
- 1:51So this weekend we just got back from a trip up north and we go
- 1:58up north, not regularly, but maybe a couple times a year.
- 2:03We have family, her sister lives up there and up north, just so
- 2:07you people know who maybe don't know us or live nearby in
- 2:11Minnesota. We have an up north, which is
- 2:13the northern half of the state and we border Canada.
- 2:15So it's like mostly a giant forest at some point.
- 2:19So that's where we go and we like it.
- 2:22Yeah, it's a lot of fun to get away a little bit from the
- 2:25cities for a lot of folks. I really do enjoy seeing my
- 2:29sister and some wonderful friends that we have who live
- 2:33again in practically Canada. So we we get to know it better
- 2:37and better every time we go. And we had a really great trip
- 2:40and we had some friends along too.
- 2:42So it was, it was a wonderful time.
- 2:46And it's just, it's always amazing how just getting away
- 2:50just for a little bit can just, well, recharge you a little.
- 2:54But then also, you know, travel is always, always its own thing.
- 2:59So I don't know but. I love to travel.
- 3:02I wish I could travel like all the time and just bring my life
- 3:07and my house and my bed and my pets.
- 3:14There's a lot of stuff I want to bring with.
- 3:15This could be a problem. I really just want to, but what
- 3:19is what is the word I'm looking for?
- 3:21Where you magically are in one spot to another?
- 3:23Teleport. Yes, I want to teleport.
- 3:25Back to sci-fi again. Except for you're right though,
- 3:29because you I don't think that there's so much stuff you have
- 3:33to bring with that probably wouldn't work for for anything
- 3:38really. So.
- 3:39Unless we had a massive teleportation tonight, because
- 3:42also I'd like to bring our friends sometimes.
- 3:45Yeah, no offense. I want to bring you sometimes.
- 3:48Well, so we were up north, which is again what we call it.
- 3:53It's we are north, but we're up north of our north and almost
- 3:56Canada. And one of the reasons why
- 3:58people go there is it's really beautiful and there's a lot of
- 4:01outdoorsy things to do that that isn't necessarily a reason why I
- 4:07go up there. But this last time, for sure,
- 4:11there was a lot of fun had by others.
- 4:14The other thing we like to do when we're up north, you can do
- 4:17it down South, you can do it anywhere.
- 4:19But when we go up north, we like to go off roading a little bit
- 4:22and. We have a Jeep.
- 4:25I, I kind of like the idea of being outside, but in a enclosed
- 4:31space so that the bugs can't get to me and you can just kind of
- 4:35drive through the woods. It's it's nice for sure.
- 4:38See, and I don't mind if we put the top down on the Jeep, put a
- 4:42little bug spray on and just hope we don't get eaten alive.
- 4:46You have to put bug spray on and you will still get bug bites
- 4:49when you're. That's true when you're in
- 4:51northern Minnesota, but. Mosquitoes are intense up north.
- 4:54They are, and they're hungry. There's not that many people,
- 4:57you know that's true. A few of the people though are
- 4:59fans of our podcast, so shout out to our Up North listeners or
- 5:04watchers however you're consuming.
- 5:06That was great. All of you almost Canadians.
- 5:09Almost Canadians good work, yes, and when we were up there, of
- 5:13course, you know, we talked to a couple people about, hey, well,
- 5:15we have this podcast and so you know, maybe we'll have some new
- 5:19listeners from there as well. And I and I hope so, but there's
- 5:24always a little bit of a contention between us as to what
- 5:28we do when we're up there. You know, there's other, there's
- 5:31a lot of cute little shops and things like that that I've never
- 5:35been to that I would like to go to.
- 5:38But it's, it's when we are in the day hours, it's about being
- 5:44outside and not doing the stuff that we could do at home.
- 5:48Are you talking about like the little kitschy stores?
- 5:50I love kitschy stores. Those are my favorite kind of
- 5:53stores. I love going into a store that
- 5:55has something that you just won't find everywhere.
- 5:59And we don't have a lot of that at all nearby.
- 6:03It's a lot of, you know, a lot of stores that well, I love the
- 6:08kitschy stores. While we were up there, I did
- 6:10happen to go into Target. That was the only store I went
- 6:14to, which is funny because even though, you know, we we drove
- 6:19where we were going and I filled up with everything I thought I
- 6:23needed, I still happened to have to go to Target.
- 6:26And it helped me out too, because one of the things that
- 6:29when we go off roading, so up north in Minnesota, a lot of it
- 6:34is and was iron ore mining territory, because there's iron
- 6:41in the soil, it turns the soil bright orange.
- 6:46So when you like, walk around up there.
- 6:48In some places, in some. Places like out in the woods, if
- 6:52it's been very rainy and you're near 1 of the iron ore deposits,
- 6:57the literally the mud is like unnaturally orange.
- 7:01Like you see it and you're like, what's going on with this
- 7:04radioactive Simpsons episode? Call back to one of our podcasts
- 7:10anyway, like you have to get stuff that you're ready to sort
- 7:15of ruin clothing wise. And I forgot my off roading
- 7:18shoes, which are shoes that you know, like it's like your grass
- 7:21cutting shoes. It's I bring those, but I forgot
- 7:23mine. So part of the Target run was
- 7:27Luke had to get some emergency very inexpensive shoes.
- 7:30And shout out to Target for having some very inexpensive
- 7:33shoe options for a guy that go walk around in the mud.
- 7:36The other part of the Target run is that the world hates me,
- 7:39nature hates me, and I forgot my allergy medication at home, so
- 7:46there was no way I was going out into the wild without having
- 7:50that allergy medication. It would have been a very
- 7:52miserable trip for, yeah, everyone, not just me.
- 7:56So. Shout out to future potential
- 7:58sponsor Target. Just want you guys.
- 8:00Yeah, yeah, I really. Appreciate good work there and
- 8:03if you ever need our help you just you hit us up.
- 8:06Yeah, I appreciate you being there when I when I need you the
- 8:09most when when the sinuses are all congested and you just know
- 8:13that it's going to be miserable of that.
- 8:15So, but just thinking about when you go even on a vacation or
- 8:22something, all the things that you need to bring, you know, and
- 8:25there are people who are choosing to do more than just
- 8:28like, I mean, we stayed at a hotel.
- 8:31There are people who go up north and they're camping.
- 8:36And I mean at a hotel, at least they have your towels and they
- 8:40have all these like they have a lot of the stuff that you need.
- 8:44But when you're camping, like you have to carry all of that
- 8:47stuff. So I, I'm definitely glad that
- 8:51we don't go camping when we're up there because I, well, I
- 8:56don't know how I would carry all the things it.
- 8:58Depends on the level of camping. There's also the new fad.
- 9:01Maybe it's not new glamping where I don't even know really
- 9:06what that means, but I feel like it's you have, do you have like
- 9:08an RV? Is it?
- 9:10I don't know if that's a. Requirement, but it would be for
- 9:12me or is it? Like you rent a tiny cabin that
- 9:15has running. Why is that called glamping and
- 9:16I don't know. We will.
- 9:18Have some listeners who know what glamping is.
- 9:20Please tell us in the comments because we literally don't know.
- 9:23No, I have no idea. It's glamorous camping, yes,
- 9:26which for you is a Does not compute I.
- 9:28No situation. No, I don't.
- 9:30There's no. Glamorous camping there's no.
- 9:32Glamorous camping and you know, like just the amount of things
- 9:36that you would need to make it glamorous.
- 9:39I just I was before. Fergie like camping because she
- 9:44is glamorous. She.
- 9:46Is glamorous glamorous but beforehand before we started
- 9:53talking this this episode has been in the discussion since
- 9:57almost immediately because this camping is one of those things
- 10:00that we live on different levels of existence with I.
- 10:06But before this episode, because, you know, I am the
- 10:09researcher of the two of us, no one would have guessed it.
- 10:12Yeah, but I was looking and there were a few things that I I
- 10:17looked at. And one of the things I was
- 10:19looking at was it was talking about 30 essential items for
- 10:22camping. And I that sounds.
- 10:25Like a lot, but it might be right, yeah.
- 10:27That's a lot of things to remember.
- 10:29Do you? Remember I forgot.
- 10:31My, I forgot my allergy medication.
- 10:34That's true. I take it every single day.
- 10:38Yeah. And they're like you take it.
- 10:39In the cities where we live, for pollen in the cities.
- 10:43And then we went up into the forest, Yeah, where there's like
- 10:46a lot more. There's a lot.
- 10:47More of all the things that just make make me not be able to
- 10:50breathe. But like that one, like one
- 10:53thing for me was that on. The list.
- 10:56No. So there's. 31 essential items
- 10:59well for. Me, there'd be a lot more than
- 11:0031 because actually while I was looking at the list, most of the
- 11:04items I was like, I would have never thought of ever bringing
- 11:07anywhere. They just say a.
- 11:09Pocket knife? I bet it did, no?
- 11:11They had a all in one tool or something like that which had
- 11:15lots of tools in it and but I don't know why I would need it.
- 11:19And they also, the other thing I thought was interesting is they
- 11:23had like lighting and that that was an essential thing, like a
- 11:27Lantern. No.
- 11:28Like string lights and stuff. String lights, well, a.
- 11:31String clip on I don't know this is.
- 11:33For glamping, no. Well, I have no idea 'cause I
- 11:35have. We don't know what.
- 11:36That is, I don't. I don't what else do you?
- 11:38Remember, this is interesting. They had.
- 11:41Thermal blankets thermal. Blanket.
- 11:44Why would you just have a sleeping bag?
- 11:46I don't. Know this is the world out there
- 11:49in the woods is unknowing. The other thing I saw that they
- 11:53had was well water. They had the thermal blanket and
- 11:58a waterproof blanket and I don't know why they can't make a
- 12:02thermal waterproof blanket and just solve both those problems,
- 12:07do they think? You're camping in a lake.
- 12:10Well, up north in the Boundary Waters, and it didn't say this
- 12:15wasn't just for up north. This was just camping in general
- 12:18anywhere and probably any place that you would go and, and there
- 12:22was a tent and they had a hammock and and they had a
- 12:24couple of items and I was like, that's pretty genius.
- 12:27And I don't know if you'd need it necessarily for camping.
- 12:29I object. To hammock.
- 12:31I mean, I think it'd be nice, but I don't know that I'd call
- 12:33it essential. What, do you guys just sit on a
- 12:36rock all the time? Yeah.
- 12:38Oh, that sounds pretty awful. OK.
- 12:42Maybe I maybe I'm wrong I guess. They also did have like, you
- 12:45know, a fire starter thing, which I don't, I don't know what
- 12:48that thing's called, but a quick start for Flintstick, Sure, a
- 12:52Flintstick rub a little. Thing and it sparks in there.
- 12:55Oh, it was. It was more sophisticated than
- 12:57that. It was called like fire start a
- 13:01lighter. No, no, not a lighter.
- 13:04I don't know. I have no idea, 'cause again, I
- 13:09when I go out into nature, I'm going to a hotel to go to
- 13:13nature. It's a short.
- 13:14Trip. Well, yeah.
- 13:17Oh, it's short duration. No, I have no desire to do an
- 13:21overnight outside. That's awful.
- 13:24I I really don't. I don't like when there's a bug
- 13:28in my house. Fair.
- 13:30So I mean, when you're outside, there's bugs everywhere.
- 13:35Well, Oh yeah, where isn't there bug I.
- 13:39Mean, I guess technically that's true.
- 13:41We well, when we were off roading and we were in the woods
- 13:45off roading and I don't know if anyone would I don't I consider
- 13:49it in the woods. I don't know if you consider it
- 13:51in the woods. I don't know if woods folks
- 13:52would consider it in the woods. The.
- 13:54Woods people. The woods people, I don't know
- 13:57if they would, but it was woodsy, but there were bugs
- 14:00everywhere. You can't be like, you roll down
- 14:02the window, they're just in there.
- 14:04There they are. Oh, those biting flies and all
- 14:08sorts of just so many mosquitoes.
- 14:11But they're just wanting to get wherever the human is and it's
- 14:16you're outnumbered. A lot.
- 14:19Massively outnumbered instead of, you know, like the one bug
- 14:24in my house, you know, and the one bug in my house I would be
- 14:27happy to like catch and set free.
- 14:30And in general, I say, if you're outside, that's where you live
- 14:34and I don't need to kill you. But I am, I am murderous when it
- 14:40comes to mosquitoes for sure. I just like, that's the one
- 14:43thing that I'm like, I have 0 sympathy for you.
- 14:45You're trying to eat me and that little.
- 14:48Vampire. Aren't they like the?
- 14:49Deadliest creature I think. Technically, yes, yeah.
- 14:52They spread all sorts of awful diseases.
- 14:55I they're, they're horrible, horrible.
- 14:57And you know, the other thing too with being outside is, you
- 15:02know, the weather's unpredictable, right?
- 15:04Like you can plan, you know, months in advance cause a lot of
- 15:09times you have to if you're going camping or something like
- 15:12that, which I don't do, but you have to plan that.
- 15:15And where we would be going in the up N Minnesota is like it,
- 15:21it could be snowing, it could be raining, who knows.
- 15:24When we were there, there was like some sort of pretty large
- 15:28storm system that went through. We didn't necessarily hear, but
- 15:33if we were out camping our tent would have gotten really wet.
- 15:39That's true. But we got to stay nice and dry.
- 15:42But I think there were like severe storms.
- 15:44I have no idea really what happened 'cause I was in the
- 15:46nice we did. Have fire alarms for no reason
- 15:49we. Did that that happened at our
- 15:51hotel but it wasn't. I would definitely prefer a fire
- 15:57alarm to having a tent that is soaked in severe thunderstorm,
- 16:03torrential rain type of type of scenario that they were talking
- 16:08about which you could not plan for seven months in advance.
- 16:12It's just weather be weather. I don't know.
- 16:15I haven't done any research as you pointed out.
- 16:17I don't know. I know that they make like
- 16:19different types of like base, like stuff you put under your
- 16:25tent, like there's always a tarp.
- 16:27So maybe they make like hardcore tarp, like if you're going
- 16:31during the rainy season or something.
- 16:34We have campy friends we could ask them.
- 16:36We do have our friends who camp and every once in a while they
- 16:41are really curious and if we'll go with them.
- 16:43And the answer from me is always no, not happening.
- 16:50If there's a hotel nearby, I will meet you wherever it is
- 16:54that you are. But I like to sleep in a bed.
- 16:58Beds are nice. I I.
- 17:00Really like beds I like I like electricity a lot I like showers
- 17:08oh that's the other thing one of the essential 30 items was a
- 17:12portable hot shower and I I it was this is for.
- 17:16Glamping. It looked like a a like a
- 17:19freaking IV bag that it said it was heated by the sun.
- 17:25Sun heated. By the sun I was.
- 17:27Blocking ears. She was like.
- 17:29This. Yeah, Yep.
- 17:30Sorry, trying to get volts. Over here.
- 17:33Heated by the solar. Heated.
- 17:36This is for sure glamping. I've been camping a bunch of
- 17:39times so far. Zero of the things you mentioned
- 17:42are on the list. So you didn't have like one of
- 17:46those cooler picnic table combos?
- 17:50A what it looks. Like a really bad, it was a
- 17:53cooler where you had like you, you moved some of the things and
- 17:57it turned into a cooler. Table combo, yeah.
- 18:02Yeah, I mean. OK so I've done different types
- 18:05of camping. Admittedly all of this was when
- 18:08I was younger, but. The world has changed,
- 18:12certainly. I'm sure.
- 18:13But like I've done some Boundary Waters camping and like you have
- 18:17to carry physically all of your gear and there's no car or
- 18:24motorized boat available to get you to the places you're going
- 18:28to go. So you have a canoe and you have
- 18:30huge backpacks. So like you're not carrying a
- 18:35cooler on your back or a picnic table or a solar powered shower
- 18:41or like I said it. Looks like AIV bag OK.
- 18:46I have done camping where we've brought like, you know,
- 18:49inflatable air mattresses and coolers and stuff because
- 18:53there's campsites that you can drive up to and then you walk a
- 18:56little bit to the campsite itself.
- 18:59Maybe that would fit some of these items.
- 19:01But I've yet so far I'm like I think I'm old for 0 for however
- 19:05many of the things you said on any camping thing that I've done
- 19:10or been a part of. There was special toilet paper,
- 19:14which really isn't toilet paper if you don't have a toilet.
- 19:17Well, that's true. Then it's just, well, I guess I
- 19:20was going to say bathroom tissue, no.
- 19:22There's no back. Just butt wipes at that point,
- 19:24Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I, I thought that was
- 19:27interesting. I would have never thought that
- 19:28you need a special kind of toilet paper.
- 19:31Yeah. There has to be no toilet.
- 19:32There is no toilet. Biodegradable, compostable,
- 19:36something like that. I mean if.
- 19:37There's not even a toilet. Why not even?
- 19:39A porta potty I. Oh and those are awful.
- 19:42I hate porta potties. I'm pretty everyone.
- 19:44Hates those. I know they're awful.
- 19:47I mean every once in a while you might find one that's like
- 19:49fresh, never been used or or whatever, I don't know, freshly
- 19:52cleaned or the beginning of a season.
- 19:55But man, I just. I still would prefer that though
- 19:59to no toilet. OK.
- 20:02I would be the opposite. OK, well we then.
- 20:05Again, we're different. We are.
- 20:07We are built a little differently, but I would I am
- 20:11and forever will be preferring some sort of toilet, which is
- 20:16why I don't want to camp. One of the reasons I don't camp.
- 20:19There's also don't like that you just you've.
- 20:22Been camping like how many times though?
- 20:25Once. That was enough.
- 20:27It was I. Didn't even know.
- 20:29I probably knew that and forgot because it's like a traumatic
- 20:31memory to think that you've only ever been camping once and wrote
- 20:34it on. I mean we.
- 20:35Tented in the backyard, but not in my backyard.
- 20:40We didn't have a tent, but I had a friend who had a tent and so
- 20:43we would, I mean. Backyard camping still counts,
- 20:45but it's not camping camping. So when I was a kid, my mom and
- 20:51dad worked really hard to get me to go to a Girl Scout camp.
- 20:56Oh. Like our our daughter who's a
- 20:58Girl Scout girl. Scout camps, yes.
- 21:00So that's what I did and and it was just wet, even though it
- 21:06wasn't everything was damp. It was buggy where I was
- 21:12camping. We did have cots and like the
- 21:14cots had mice in them and all sorts of I mean, I don't know if
- 21:18my cot did. Maybe it was a maybe it was a
- 21:20myth, but I'm I'm pretty sure so you don't.
- 21:26Even know if it's true I. Think it's true 'cause you would
- 21:29hear things moving in the middle of the night and that was.
- 21:32Very normal. I don't.
- 21:33Like that nature? Moves all 24 hours of the day.
- 21:37I don't. I really don't want something
- 21:39moving around me that is not trained.
- 21:42OK, like. I we have a dog and a cat and
- 21:46they are allowed to move around me.
- 21:48They're allowed. To move but.
- 21:49They also do not see my human body.
- 21:54Like, OK, I get the animals when you're camping are really being
- 21:59opportunistic. Like a bear wants your food and
- 22:02they know that you've got curious.
- 22:04A bear would be opportunist, so would a raccoon be
- 22:07opportunistic? Yeah.
- 22:08And my deer. A deer might be curious.
- 22:13Oh. I would think a deer is
- 22:14confused. They I don't, I have no idea if
- 22:16they'd wanna hang out with you. But like our animals, they, they
- 22:21know that we're gonna give them food.
- 22:23And so we have a a mutual relationship there instead of
- 22:28just I'm going to take from you and make sounds and and maybe I
- 22:33really do like animals, but I don't wanna I don't want to have
- 22:38animals that I don't know are there be there.
- 22:42You know, that sounds not interesting and I don't want
- 22:46something crawling by me. And we were.
- 22:50What about? Cute little chipmunks, they're.
- 22:52Cute during the day. OK, I.
- 22:55Like to see animals during the day when I.
- 22:58All of them at night should just go to bed.
- 23:00They. Should or like I wouldn't mind
- 23:04watching them from a place where I am in a.
- 23:09Like the zoo? Yes and I time 0 would be nice,
- 23:15but I just don't want them hanging out when I'm not
- 23:19expecting I want to see them. I do really want to see them
- 23:21just not at night. Raccoons are cute.
- 23:24I love raccoons Bears are cute. Wolves, wolves are they look
- 23:29like dogs. I've said that before and I'll
- 23:30say it again. They're absolutely adorable.
- 23:33You know it's. Not cute possums.
- 23:35No. And I know that there are people
- 23:37who really love possums and they do really good things.
- 23:40They eat ticks and they don't carry rabies, but they are a
- 23:46little terrifying. We used to have possums at our
- 23:49last house or a possum. I'm not actually sure how many
- 23:53there were, but they really enjoyed being around.
- 23:57It's they really enjoyed being around our yard.
- 24:01And so we had to look at those things and they had the beady
- 24:03red eyes and the long tail. I mean, they just like, yeah,
- 24:06not my, not my deal, but I know that they serve an important
- 24:10purpose. I wonder if they.
- 24:12Visit campsites. Why wouldn't they?
- 24:14They like they like people food. I have no.
- 24:16Idea we. Had a possum at this house too
- 24:18years ago and I did research to see how to not be a a good host
- 24:24to possums and stuff and it wasn't in our house, he was in
- 24:27our yard I guess. And so then I figured out what
- 24:30you need to do to not have them move.
- 24:32Them out. That is what you needed to do,
- 24:35actually. Yeah, I assisted the.
- 24:37Possum in moving out, yes. He he went very far away and
- 24:41he's not come back. So but those are just like some
- 24:44really good reasons. The other thing I don't I'm not
- 24:46really into camping is the food thing, right.
- 24:50You were talking about you, you have to bring the cooler or you
- 24:54can't bring a cooler. Well, you.
- 24:56Just have to bring stuff that, you know, like you're not
- 25:00bringing like Michelin star meals with you.
- 25:03You're, you know, canned, canned goods.
- 25:06That's a, you know. Fine with canned goods.
- 25:09Dried foods, dried fruit for instance, that's a good one to
- 25:12bring. Camping, trail mix, stuff like
- 25:15nuts and and I. Don't mind that, but I'm I don't
- 25:20know what I'm going to want to eat in seven days or three or
- 25:24however long you're camping for. And so for me like well even on
- 25:31our trip like I grabbed 3 bags worth of groceries.
- 25:35That's true. Because I want to ensure that I
- 25:38have whatever it is that I'm needing at that time.
- 25:41If it's sweet, if it's savory, if it's a little bit of both, if
- 25:43it's juicy, like all sorts of those things.
- 25:47And that would be, I mean, just bringing all of our stuff up to
- 25:52the hotel seems like a lot of work.
- 25:55And then you have to bring it to a campsite.
- 25:57That's awful. And I, I was also 'cause I was
- 26:00trying to do a little bit of research and one of the things I
- 26:02was reading is there's like the 333 rule and the 444 rule and
- 26:07the, there's all these number rules, but it's very confusing.
- 26:11What's? What's what's the 333 and the
- 26:14four four? It's like the.
- 26:15Distance that your camp needs to be from a trail at a minimum.
- 26:22And I don't like remember if it was 300 yards, I have no 300
- 26:27feet or three feet or what it was.
- 26:30But then like it talked about building your camp into a
- 26:34triangle and that that's proper. And I was like, this is so much
- 26:38flipping work. But I feel like if you knew the
- 26:41things, you would just know the things.
- 26:44But how do you determine what's the right number to follow all
- 26:47of these rules? Do you?
- 26:48Remember the other Threes? No.
- 26:51What about? The Fours, I think.
- 26:52It was the same thing. They're just like now.
- 26:54Now we're using. The number is that.
- 26:55If you're building a square shape campsite.
- 26:58No 'cause it was still only 3/4. OK, I feel.
- 27:03Like if you and if you and I were to go camping, you haven't
- 27:07done enough research and I will have expected that you know what
- 27:10you're doing, but you haven't heard of any of the essential
- 27:14items that they say that you must have to go camping, I mean.
- 27:17If I was gonna go on a camping trip, I would certainly prepare,
- 27:21but I also know that you're not coming with.
- 27:25That's that's pretty true. You also don't know these rules.
- 27:28I feel like there are people who listen to camping that know all
- 27:31of these rules. They've done the work, they're
- 27:33prepared. It's not just go into the woods
- 27:37and throw up a tent. That even sounds like more than
- 27:40I'd want to do. I mean.
- 27:41If you're at one of the campsites that's near to a
- 27:45vehicle, even if you've, let's say you've hiked into the
- 27:48campsite and it's even, I don't know, half a mile away, that's a
- 27:53pretty far distance. But you could like pretty easily
- 27:57within a, you know, shortish walk, get back to your vehicle
- 28:02if you needed something or it wasn't an emergency.
- 28:05The camping that I have in my brain, the most memorable that
- 28:09I've done in my life is the one where literally we like went
- 28:12into the woods so far that there was no like no outside services.
- 28:19The only hope for rescue you would have would be like a
- 28:23helicopter. There's no cell phone service.
- 28:26Go. Where the only hope for rescue
- 28:29is a helicopter. Well, because.
- 28:31You don't plan for death or dismemberment you, you're
- 28:34supposed. To plan for those things I
- 28:36don't. Think so.
- 28:37I feel like you're supposed to be.
- 28:38Prepared for camping. This is why people die when
- 28:42camping, because they're not prepared.
- 28:45The number one reason is exposure, but I'm it's not like,
- 28:49you know, does. This mean that that level of
- 28:53adventure camping falls into the category of Luke is a daredevil.
- 28:58It does. That's hilarious.
- 29:01I I. Don't know, 'cause I think when
- 29:03your kid and your parents just take you places, you don't
- 29:05necessarily think that it's dangerous, but it, it is.
- 29:09It's, I mean, if you look at take a look at any of the
- 29:12national parks numbers, it's pretty, I mean.
- 29:18I mean, I've survived a National Park, I should get a bumper
- 29:21sticker. I mean, I I've.
- 29:23Survived camping in a National Park.
- 29:25All right, there you go. Let's TM it and add a little
- 29:29logo which we're working on and put it on there.
- 29:32I just it. There's just so much that you
- 29:35need to do that we're I. It doesn't sound to me like you
- 29:39even you'd be a bad camping partner.
- 29:42That's offensive. I'm not going camping everyone.
- 29:45I've ever camped with has not told me that I was a bad camping
- 29:48partner. When was the?
- 29:49Last time I went camping. Few years ish ago with our kid
- 29:53at Girl Scouts. Oh I mean I OK.
- 29:58Also what's the point of getting away to just be with a bunch of
- 30:01people too? I don't understand.
- 30:04This Hey, you just offended like all of the listeners.
- 30:07Why would you want to go be with people like?
- 30:11Everybody, it's like, oh, it's so great to get away from it
- 30:13all, but then they're campsites and there's like hundreds of
- 30:17people around and you're like, there's like hundreds.
- 30:20Of people that they book. Out you.
- 30:22Have been camping as you admitted one time.
- 30:26And. Whatever happened was
- 30:28impressionable enough for you to never, ever want to do it again.
- 30:32And I'm telling you as a person who is not even an experienced
- 30:36camper, but certainly more experienced than you.
- 30:38Like, there are not ever hundreds of people camping with
- 30:41you. Unless you're going to one of
- 30:43these like it's a music festival and it's near the woods, so all
- 30:47the people are going to bring a tent.
- 30:50That's not what we're talking about.
- 30:52Most. Campsites have campsites and
- 30:54they're like numbered and they're like sub 2025, maybe 30
- 30:59and that's like it. I don't understand what you just
- 31:02said about the. The sites and they're like
- 31:05spread out over a so if. There's 30 sites and you have a
- 31:08family of five. There's 150, no?
- 31:10No, but they spread them out. It's not like they're it's row
- 31:13houses in San Francisco or something.
- 31:15It's like each campsite is just far enough away from the other
- 31:19that like, you might be able to see their campfire at night, but
- 31:23you're not like hearing their conversations or watching them
- 31:27cook their food or, you know, this is.
- 31:29No different than if I go to a hotel where there's 150 people
- 31:33and I see that they exist, but I'm not paying attention to
- 31:35that. Actually a lot different I.
- 31:37I don't know. I don't know.
- 31:40I just, I really think that there's so much more to what
- 31:43you're saying than just the and what people say about that whole
- 31:47simplicity of being out there and the nature and all of that.
- 31:51You can visit nature, 'cause I do this.
- 31:54Yeah, you. Can and.
- 31:55Leave. You can.
- 31:56That's what I like to do. That's true.
- 31:58The staying there overnight and it's just, it's so much work you
- 32:03were talking about. You can go back to your car and
- 32:05get something if you wanted, right?
- 32:07If I went back to my car, I'm leaving.
- 32:09You're gone. Why?
- 32:10Would I have just walked three hours to get back to my car?
- 32:14Just It's fine. I just go home.
- 32:17Go home. Amber, you're not.
- 32:19You don't need to be there. I really don't want to do that
- 32:22at all. So.
- 32:26So, Luke, let me ask you a question.
- 32:28And now, the moment you've all been waiting for in this corner,
- 32:35we have Amber claiming to weigh in at 135 lbs.
- 32:39And today she brings a little side eye which she might need
- 32:43today. In this corner we have Luke
- 32:48claiming to weigh in at 185 lbs with beautiful, glorious red
- 32:55beard. It's red.
- 32:57And he is coming in today at 3 losses and two wins.
- 33:05And he's gonna. Trying to catch up.
- 33:10I I, you know, if you ever get into one of those fights for
- 33:13you, like I know I might lose. This might be his, his leveling
- 33:20playing field here. But really, the real thing is
- 33:24Luke, let me ask you a question. Go ahead is.
- 33:28Camping a vacation? Does camping count as a
- 33:33vacation? Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:37Not even a question. I mean, so we've discussed some
- 33:41of the insurance and outs and potentially hilarious essential
- 33:46items that you need to bring. But I think I mean like 1, by
- 33:52definition of vacation, I think for most people is leaving your
- 33:57normal life, not even necessarily that far away, but
- 34:01geographically you go somewhere else and you do something else
- 34:06for a short amount of time anywhere from who knows, a few
- 34:09days to a week or or more. I mean, you know, some people
- 34:12are able to take multi week long vacations.
- 34:16And but more importantly than the specifics of it, I think
- 34:22that camping has been and will continue to be a vacation for
- 34:29most people. Maybe, I mean maybe even more
- 34:32than like a vacation that you would consider a vacation
- 34:35because in camping, you're not only getting away from the
- 34:40normal stuff like work and school and typical obligations,
- 34:46but you're leaving the quote trappings of modern life behind
- 34:53intentionally. You're like saying, OK, I don't
- 34:56want electricity and a roof over my head and I and I don't want
- 35:02running water and I don't want city lights.
- 35:05I want to go far enough away so that I can pitch a tent in the
- 35:09wood in the quiet of nature and at night fall asleep to the
- 35:13sound of the trees swishing in the wind and the various life
- 35:19outside that's scurrying about or buzzing through the air.
- 35:23The call of an owl, for instance, is pretty cool to
- 35:26hear. And then when you wake up and
- 35:29you enjoy your day, you're going to do it just the simplest way
- 35:33you can, which is you're going to strap your boots on and go
- 35:37for a hike. You're going to go find a nice
- 35:40body of water somewhere you might maybe be camping where
- 35:44there's a canoe or a kayak and you're going to, you know, have
- 35:47a little water time or you're going to like intentionally plan
- 35:52out other stuff people do while they're camping.
- 35:54There's so many options. And you're going to enjoy the
- 35:58other things that are normal about camping, like campfires.
- 36:02Who doesn't make AI mean? Who doesn't like a nice wood
- 36:05fire? And you know, you've got like a
- 36:08little camp stove and you make your simple meal and there's not
- 36:12a lot of fancy to it. You could bring a couple of
- 36:15seasonings, but you're not you're not going to bring your
- 36:18whole kitchen lamp, dude. And.
- 36:22Your salt? Yeah.
- 36:24And pepper, sure. And other stuff.
- 36:27I mean, you can obviously bring more and I mean, I think for a
- 36:32lot of people it is that it's getting away.
- 36:33It's getting to a place where your cell phone doesn't work
- 36:36anymore. And you know what you're going
- 36:39to do at night after the the activity of the day has happened
- 36:43and you're not yet quite at bedtime.
- 36:45Maybe you have a like a little camp light Lantern and you read
- 36:48a little book. Maybe you have a quiet
- 36:51conversation with a loved one and you talk about life and the
- 36:56future and you know you do that while you're encompassed in the
- 37:00stars and, and it's just a, it's a magical experience.
- 37:06It really is. Magical experience.
- 37:09So lutely. Magical experience.
- 37:12I mean, I've been to the Magic Kingdom.
- 37:17OK. That's a magical experience.
- 37:19That's not camping. No, no.
- 37:22But I mean, like, this does not sound like a vacation to me.
- 37:26All of these things you're talking about sound like work,
- 37:30like building a fire. I can build a fire at home too,
- 37:34right? Like I don't have to go anywhere
- 37:35to build a fire. You were talking about food.
- 37:40And maybe if you carry with you salt and pepper and another
- 37:44seasoning you, you cook your own food, which I do that every day,
- 37:50right? Well, OK, I don't do it every
- 37:53day, but I cook a lot. I cook a lot.
- 37:56So, so the food thing that's that's not vacation.
- 38:00When I'm on vacation, I, I have 0 desire to cook on vacation.
- 38:06And then like The Walking, you can walk anywhere.
- 38:10That's not. I mean I get what you're saying,
- 38:12but the point of The Walking to a campsite is to get where
- 38:16you're going to then put up your housing, right?
- 38:20For me on a vacation, the housing already exists.
- 38:23I don't have to build a house. It exists so I if I I would
- 38:30think building a house is working, not vacation it's.
- 38:34A. It's a little bit of work, yeah.
- 38:35It's a. Lot of bit of work and again,
- 38:37now camping with you, I don't know 'cause you have not, You do
- 38:41not know the rules of camping according to what I've learned
- 38:44about camping. So I don't know that you're even
- 38:47going through as much as what you should be doing and like,
- 38:52again, forgetting something, then what?
- 38:54Then what? You know that it's just you
- 38:56don't have whatever it is you need for, again, someone like
- 39:01me, the allergy medication, like what am I going to do?
- 39:03Just freaking wait. That sounds awful.
- 39:07Well, all of the things you say that are the nice things about
- 39:13camping, being in nature, all of those things, looking at the
- 39:16stars, having a fire, you can do all of those things on a
- 39:20vacation that doesn't involve camping.
- 39:23So the work that is needed that that is required to do the
- 39:28camping is where I'm saying it's not a vacation.
- 39:31It's a choice. People make the choice to go
- 39:35camping, but you've wanted me to go camping with you before and I
- 39:40have no desire to take any of my very limited although better now
- 39:45but limited PTO, to go work harder in the woods to have a
- 39:51lower quality of life, uncomfortable bed, no
- 39:55electricity, no shower, terrible food, and whatever I can carry
- 40:00on my back like. No it is not.
- 40:04That is not a vacation. That sounds stressful.
- 40:08And awful just so that you can sleep like you're just looking
- 40:12for all your whole time is dealing with your essential
- 40:15items, right? Like your food, shelter and
- 40:18clothing, right? Like that's that's what you got
- 40:22a vacation. They've already done all that
- 40:23for you. You don't have to think about
- 40:25those things. Maybe you should bring your own
- 40:26clothes, but you can buy clothes if you're vacationing somewhere.
- 40:31You definitely. Want to bring your own clothes
- 40:33on any vacation? Yes, but.
- 40:34You don't have to worry about, you know, it's you're probably.
- 40:37Not going to be able to buy any if you're camping though, no.
- 40:40You're in trouble. You're in trouble if you lose
- 40:42your shirt. Now you're cold.
- 40:46If you lose. Your shirt, if you dropped your,
- 40:49if you dropped your hoodie, you know however many miles away and
- 40:53you don't know where that is now you're cold.
- 40:55I'm just saying camping is not a a vacation and I have 0 desire
- 41:03to do it. That is clear in my case is that
- 41:08camping does count as a vacation.
- 41:11The last little bit that I just want to add just because let it
- 41:15be always got 40. 5 minutes to talk about camping little.
- 41:18Just a little. It's way cheaper.
- 41:22That's another argument. No, because you.
- 41:23Need the 30 essential items, they're not cheap.
- 41:27I was looking at those items, they are not cheap.
- 41:30You you're probably right, you do need other supplies and
- 41:33things to go camping. Yes, and if.
- 41:36You had to buy them every time. It would probably be expensive.
- 41:40Maybe it would be as expensive as a hotel.
- 41:42I don't actually know. Well, if I had to do a camping
- 41:45or a staycation, I would easily 150 million percent choose a
- 41:52staycation. But I.
- 41:53Think. Those are my only two choices,
- 41:55that being. Said I don't think a staycation
- 41:57is a vacation. It's.
- 41:58More as because like. You're staying where you are.
- 42:01Yeah, but I feel like you got to go somewhere.
- 42:03You're going to vacation well. Vacate.
- 42:07It Yeah, I was going to say the root of the word, do an old
- 42:10thing like my dad does, but we'll leave it alone.
- 42:12Yeah, we'll. Let that happen.
- 42:14Well, I don't know. OK, so the question has been
- 42:17asked and the question has been answered.
- 42:19Yeah. Now it's up to you folks.
- 42:24Yeah, you're going to want to go to the Spotify polls if you'd
- 42:28like. We've left them open a little
- 42:30bit longer for folks because people have said they've wanted
- 42:33to vote in there like to the official vote.
- 42:35However, we do take any comments and any I mean like when people
- 42:41comment we on. Whatever social you're on, yeah.
- 42:45We take that as official vote you send.
- 42:47In an e-mail, whatever the that still counts we.
- 42:50Still count that and. Unfortunately, I'm somehow
- 42:52losing he's. Losing maybe?
- 42:55This is the turn of the tide, this.
- 42:57Could be I know a lot of a lot of friends that we have enjoy
- 43:01camping and and the push that they always have to get me to go
- 43:05is like you all would be miserable if I went so.
- 43:08Miserable so. Not just me.
- 43:11I mean, I would be miserable, but I would not and I would try
- 43:14not to I feel like. You would be like one of those
